Abstract:The present work intends to optimize a hybrid delayed differentiation multiproduct economic production quantity-EPQ model with the scrap and end-products multi-shipment policy. Since the requirements of multi-goods have a standard part in common, our fabrication planning adopts a two-phase delayed differentiation strategy to make the standard components first and produce the finished multi-goods in the second phase. Implementing a partial subcontracting option (with the additional expense) for the standard parts helps us to expedite the required uptime in the first phase. A screening process identifies the faulty items that need to be removed to ensure the in-house production quality. A multi-shipment plan delivers the finished lot of end-products to clients in fixed time intervals. This study optimizes the overall operating expenses of this intra-supply chain system, including fabrication, delivery, and client stock holding, through our proposed modeling, formulation, and optimization procedure. In addition, this study gives a numerical demonstration of the obtained results' applicability and usefulness to managerial decision-making.

Abstract:In view of global environmental and social challenges the transition towards a Circular Economy is considered as a crucial factor for sustainable development. Therefore, the replacement of traditional linear business models involving product discard at the end of product life with concepts focusing on re-use of resources is essential. Reverse Logistics and Closed-loop Supply Chains are seen to be key elements of such a transition. Motivated by findings from a case study of an independent reprocessing company, we address integrated decision-making in Reverse Logistics in this paper. We present a non-linear optimisation model with interrelated processes in terms of acquisition of used products, grading for determination of product quality and reprocessing disposition. The decisions to be made concern the effort spent for active acquisition of used products and the number of reprocessed goods; both decisions are influenced by heterogeneous condition of used products. The consideration of deterministic and stochastic demand facilitates the representation of a variety of business cases. For both demand types we provide analytical insights in the form of complete strategies consisting of different scenarios which allow optimal decision-making under variable conditions. Numerical examples complement insights into the model by conducting a sensitivity analysis of relevant model parameters.

Abstract:The need for sustainability is driving the transition from linear to circular production. Customers, driven by the desire for innovation, prefer new products with the latest cutting-edge functions and design. The problem is that used products from older product generations are hence less attractive, leading to a limited market for remanufactured products and generating less revenue than their new counterparts. Therefore, this research addresses the problem of reprocessing and technologically updating used products into the newest product generation. To address this problem of reprocessing and technological updating with a Circular Factory, the product's function fulfillment must be predicted in different situations in a Circular Factory. Three key challenges in which the function fulfillment must be predicted are identified as: Analysis and Diagnostics of Used Products and Subsystems, Prediction for Pairing and Reprocess of the Embodiment and Design for Circular Factory. A model-based approach is presented to address these three key challenges by predicting product function fulfillment to enable cross-generational use of subsystems and components. Five different types of models are proposed: A Functional Model, a Reliability Model and a Reference Architecture Model at the high level of general product modeling, as well as a Digital Twin of an object instance and a Tolerance Scheme at the level of individual instances. A theoretical case study shows the possible application in a Circular Factory using the example of an angle grinder. However, it's essential to acknowledge that substantial work is needed for the enhancement or development of these models before practical application. Successful application of these models allows the Circular Factory not only to maintain but also to increase the value of reprocessed products to enable offering on the primary market and contribute to the vision of realizing a perpetual innovative product.

Abstract:In this work, a new model is developed to determine optimum sustainable economic order quantity (EOQ) and economic production quantity (EPQ) values for multiple products of a supply chain with two echelons, consist of a retailer and a supplier, considering product return policy. Based on a literature review on previous related works in sustainable inventory area, 17 different sustainability cost functions, in three types of economic, environmental and social, are defined to form the profit functions of the retailer and the supplier as the main members of the chain. We formulate the profit function of each members of the chain using direct accounting approach as a careful method, considering sustainability costs and return policy to produce and supply multiple products. Two different scenarios for product return are studied considering return amount as a variable or a given parameter. After a numerical example according to an Iranian supply chain that supplies various petrochemical products, a sensitivity analysis related to three parameters of the problem that imposed return functions of products has been conducted. The results show that the total profit amount of each members of the sustainable supply chain is sensitive on the return parameters with different rates.
Enhancing supply chain relationships in the circular economy: Strategies for a green centralized supply chain with deteriorating products

Abstract:This article introduces a green centralized supply chain in a two-stage stochastic programming model using deteriorating products. The model reduces the cost of purchasing, transporting, storing, product recovery and shortages. This cuts down on greenhouse emission related to transportation, product recovery, and recycling programs. On the basis of this, we explore the utilization of the circular economy to the damages that could occur from used products. Furthermore, revenue sharing and quantity discount contracts are examined in the business models between the members of the supply chain and the external manufacturer. Demand is assumed to be uncertain, and scenarios are created to account this. The model specifies the optimal order quantities, transportation modes and contract terms that minimize costs and environmental impacts. Numerical examples analyze the trade-offs between economic and environmental objectives under different supply chain parameters. The results provide insights for circular supply chains that reconcile economic incentives with environmental responsibility for deteriorating product.

Abstract:The manufacturer should be involved in the collection of used products under product take-back regulation issued by the government. Research on environmental regulation is not uncommon, but with collection rate constraint consideration has received limited attention. Therefore, we use the collection rate as a decision variable and analyze the effect of constraint on the remanufacturing strategies. Research results show that the manufacturer adopts the maximum (minimum) collection rate when the inverse operating cost falls on the two opposite ends of the spectrum. Otherwise, combinations of inverse operating cost and new product manufacturing cost lead to the optimal solutions. In addition, we use Apple company as the case to verify the proposed model through real data. Numerical results show the robustness and applicability of the proposed model.

Abstract:Sustainable development and competitive advantage are impacted by strategic choices that maximize resource value and reduce waste. Numerous instances of thriving OEM remanufacturing can be observed, predominantly in the business‐to‐business domain. The significance of Closed‐Loop Supply Chain (CLSC) in generating value and managing the recovery process is widely acknowledged within the supply chain industry. Manufacturing companies now have to come up with green supply chain and process design strategies in response to recent changes in environmental regulations. This study designates the specific features of circular closed‐loop supply‐chain design considering end‐of‐life products. Uncertainty in various aspects, such as acquisition, processing, and market stages, is impeding the progress of circular economies and also sustainable development in closed‐loop supply chains (CLSCs). This has led to increased complexity in remanufacturing processes and decreased efficiency. To address this issue, the study proposes a comprehensive, integrative approach for establishing a sustainable CLSC network that adapts to fluctuating demand through a questionnaire analysis. Moreover, the study introduces a multi‐objective optimization model for a dual‐channel supply chain network, aiming to enhance the flow. This model considers both economic and environmental objectives to achieve a sustainable and efficient supply chain system. To determine the ideal circular closed‐loop supply chain (CLSC) network design, the research proposes linear programming model with mixed integer, where recovery can take place in one of three ways: through material recovery, component recovery, or product recovery. Numerous findings from a thorough analysis by data backup that inform CLSC managers of ways to improve product returns in terms of quantity and quality. To address the uncertainty problem, the research also developed the fuzzy credibility constraint technique with a Simulated Annealing algorithm. Using cutting‐edge methods, it is explored and compared how sensitivity analysis results, the impact of altering the problem parameters, and the performance of the suggested model respectively.

Abstract:The growing environmental concerns, governmental regulations, and significant cost savings are the primary motivations for companies to consider the reuse and recovery of products in their inventory system. The previous research ignored several realistic features of reusable items inventory systems, such as the presence of multiple products and operational constraints. For the first time, this paper presents a new multiproduct economic order quantity inventory model for an inventory system of reusable products. The goal of the model is to determine the optimal replenishment quantity and reuse quantity of each item so that the system's total cost is minimized. Several operational constraints are considered to provide a more realistic framework, such as the total available budget, warehouse space, and holding cost. Due to the nonlinearity of the presented model, differential evolution (DE) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms are utilized as two solution approaches. However, these algorithms' performance is highly dependent on their control parameters. Therefore, for the first time, two new variants of these algorithms, called DEQL and PSOQL, are presented in this study, where the control parameters of algorithms are not pre-determined. A powerful reinforcement learning algorithm, Q-learning, adapts these values intelligently. In other words, as a research contribution, this research aims at introducing a new variant of hybrid the DE and PSO algorithms in which a machine learning algorithm controls the value of metaheuristic parameters. The other parameters of the proposed algorithms are tunned employing the Taguchi method. Extensive numerical examples are established in different sizes, and the outputs are discussed in terms of several criteria. Statistical analysis of the results is performed, demonstrating that the proposed reinforcement learning-based parameter adaption has significantly improved algorithms' performance.

Abstract:To protect our environment, current firms are committed to the circular economy and process maintenance strategies to reduce the waste of resources. In this way, they can also save costs and create an enterprise image and value. Therefore, this study explores an imperfect production system with a circular economy and process maintenance activities, wherein the defective products can be converted into scrap returns (i.e., secondary raw materials) and products can be manufactured using mixed materials containing scrap returns. The proposed system considers multiple products with varying feed rates of scrap returns. According to the scenario of the aforementioned production system, this paper develops a production–inventory model aimed at cost minimization, in which the production run time, purchased quantity of material, number of maintenance times, and recovery rate are decision variables. Furthermore, we also develop a computational algorithm to obtain these optimal solutions efficiently. Finally, the numerical and sensitivity analyses based on a practical case are presented to illustrate the applicability of our method and some managerial implications. For example, both strategies efficiently reduce the total cost per unit time in the proposed numerical example. The sensitivity results can be used to determine the optimal combination of two strategies and the execution moment under various changes in cost parameters.

Abstract:The circular economy (CE) and the marketing activities are the key subjects to attract the market share in today’s complex supply chain. Here, dual selling channels, the online delivery time, and the distributor sales effort are considered as marketing activities to attract the customers. Moreover, in order to meets the economic and environmental principles of the CE, three responsibilities to ease the carbon emission, as approaches for the return on investment, are devised, including investment in the green production, the cap and trade regulation, and the hybrid remanufacturing via both the manufacturer and the distributor under the technology license. This such complex supply chain needs to determine the equilibrium amounts of the distinguishing elements, including the pricing strategy, remanufacturing approaches, delivery time, and sales effort to abate the conflicts between the members, and consequently, to enhance the economic and CE objectives of the supply chain (SC). In order to obtain the equilibrium decision makings, three game theoretical approaches, including the manufacturer-Stackelberg game (SM), the distributor-Stackelberg game (SR) and the Nash game (N) are employed. The interaction between the game sequences and the remanufacturing process is the key purpose of this paper to not only maximize the profit of SC but also to enrich the CE and marketing goals of this research. The outcomes presented that the SM game, where the manufacturer remanufactures most of the defected products which are collected via the distributor, is the best game strategy to improve the profits of both the distributor and the manufacturer, and also to enhance the other distinguishing elements. In addition, in the SR game, when most of the returns remanufacture via the distributor under the manufacturer license, it not only maximizes the profits of members but also lead to the improvement of the distinguishing elements. In the Nash game, however, there is a conflict between the members about the remanufacturing process, which reduces the SC profit in this game as compared to other ones.

Abstract:Problem: Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCGs) are products that are purchased and consumed frequently to satisfy continuous consumer demand. In a linear economy, FMCGs are typically offered as single-use and disposable products. Limitations in product design, insufficient collection systems, and inefficient recovery processes prevent high recycling rates. As a result, FMCGs often end up in landfill or the environment, contributing to waste accumulation, and pollution. Whilst recycling is the most common waste prevention strategy practiced by the industry, the process is limited to addressing only the final stage of the product life cycle, omitting the overproduction and consumption of materials typical of FMCGs. Instead, reuse is a strategy that is capable of extending the value of resources by slowing material flows. Novel reuse models that require the consumer to interact with durable primary packaging and products are emerging in the FMCG industry. However, the constituent elements and operation principles of such reuse models are not fully understood. The aim of this research is to develop a comprehensive characterisation of reuse models and to evaluate their potential to deliver environmental value. Method: Ninety-two reuse offerings were selected and analysed to identify their reuse system elements. The analysis led to the identification of a framework including five reuse models, which were also evaluated to establish their capability to deliver environmental value when compared to conventional single-use and disposable FMCGs. Results: Currently in the FMCG sector, reusable products are mostly durable packaging, such as bottles and containers for beverages, foods, personal and home care goods, and are infrequently durable products, such as personal and baby care goods, including razors and nappies. Three reuse models involve exclusive reuse, a behaviour by which a reusable product is used and kept by a single user throughout the product lifetime. In exclusive reuse models, users are provided with either a reusable product (model 1), a reusable product with preparation for reuse infrastructure (model 2), or access to preparation for reuse infrastructure (model 3). Two reuse models involve sequential reuse, a behaviour by which a reusable product is used by multiple users throughout the product lifetime and returned after each use to a provider. In sequential reuse models, users are provided with either a reusable product with preparation for reuse infrastructure and provider-operated recovery services (model 4), or a reusable product and provider-operated services for recovery and preparation for reuse (model 5). Whilst the five reuse models can operate standalone, some offerings were found to embed a multi-model approach. Both exclusive and sequential reuse models are capable of delivering environmental value by reducing the use of natural resources and retaining their value in the economy. In particular, sequential reuse models were found to have a greater capability to increase the share of recyclable resources by offering access to infrastructure for the closure of material loops. Conclusions: Consumers can currently access five reuse models and choose between exclusive and sequential reuse behaviours. When adopted in conjunction with recycling, reuse models can enable a more efficient consumption of FMCGs. Providing the infrastructure necessary to enable reuse and recycling is key to the successful and sustainable deployment of the reuse models.

Abstract:The management of end-of-life electronic waste (e-waste) attracts significant attention due to environmental concerns, legislative requirements, consumer interest in green products, and the market image of manufacturers. However, managing e-waste is complicated by several factors, including the high degree of uncertainty of quantity, timing of arrival, and quality of the returned products. This variability in the stream of returned end-of-life (EOL) products makes it difficult to plan for remanufacturing facility materials, equipment, and human resource requirements. The aim of this research is to tackle the uncertainty associated with the quantity of received used products. A stochastic programming model for waste stream acquisition systems (as opposed to market-driven systems) is introduced. The model considers the quantity of returned product as an uncertain parameter and determines to what extent the product should be disassembled and what is the best EOL option for each subassembly. The stochastic model is defined in a form of chance constrained programming and is then converted to a mixed integer linear programming. An example is provided to illustrate the application of the model for an uncertain stream of PCs (minus monitor and keyboard) received in a PC refurbishing company. The remanufacturer must then decide which proportion of disassembled modules should be processed given specific remanufacturing options.

Abstract:Competition in today’s market is the most important concern of companies and producers in free markets. Buyers are also looking for higher quality and lower prices. Manufacturers should, therefore, reduce production costs and increase budgets for research and product development. On the other hand, the limitation of mineral resources in each country and in the world in general is a very important factor for increasing the price of raw materials which increases the cost of production of a product. In this study, a green aspect of decision-making, concurrent modeling for inventory-routing, and application of maximum entropy (ME) method for overcoming uncertainties of demands are applied to optimize the usage of raw materials and returning of defective products to the production cycle in a closed-looped supply chain under multi-period planning horizon. Also, dynamic modeling is used to balance the inventory level in all stages of the network that leads to optimum usage of the raw materials. For this purpose, the first objective function reduces production, transportation-routing, and inventory costs, and the second objective reduces greenhouse gas emissions through all levels of the network. Finally, this model is solved by using the exact solution method with the help of Gams software as well as the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGAII) and multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm. Sensitivity analysis has been performed on failure rates, greenhouse gas emissions during recycling and production, and the optimistic-pessimistic coefficient of the ME solution method. Solution methods have been compared using several criteria, and the NSGAII method has finally obtained the best result. The results show that the manager should pay more costs in order to prevent backorder demands. Also, collecting the more defective products leads to increasing production amount since the collective products can return to the production line. Finally, it is required for the managers to control products’ failure rate to optimize capacity usage in the model.

Abstract:The management of inventory significantly impacts an organization's profitability. Numerous researchers have developed the production model tailored for decaying items to boost sales and minimize inventory, thereby increasing turnover ratios. This study focuses on the EPQ model for reworkable items under exponential combined with inventory dynamics. The primary objective is to optimize the production plan to manage maintenance costs effectively, ensuring optimal Leveraging human and technological resources. The research determines the optimal cycle length, backordered quantities, and production quantities to minimize overall costs. Specifically, penalties are incurred for excessive production times during rework and non-rework phases. This model finds applications in industries such as printed circuit board assembly in semiconductor manufacturing, metal parts, and plastic molding. The study concludes with numerical examples comparing total costs under the proposed model, supplemented by sensitivity analyses that explore the impacts of parameter variations on decision-making.

Abstract:It can be hard for enterprises to make the first move towards circular business models; technologies, information and design need to be linked and dynamic. The present paper proposes a methodology that guides enterprises in integrating environmental and economic aspects during the optimization of products' end-of-life. It overcomes the current literature limits because it focuses on multiple lifecycle stages and is not limited to end-of-life strategies; secondly, it encompasses both the economic and environmental sustainability perspectives. It expects its implementation to be supported by commercial solutions that enable the quantification of environmental and economic indices, such as degradation index, target price and target cost. The methodology was applied to an industrial case study (an electrospindle) enabling its validation and a deep reflection on the potential consequences of the analyzed scenario throughout the value chain and business departments. The results of the case study show that not all the scenarios are convenient; only the cases that expect components of the pneumatic cylinder group and shaft kit to be re-manufactured are environmentally and economically convenient. The first scenario, which is about disassembling the product to optimize the recycling flow, is currently not feasible from the economic perspective; however, the acquisition of a higher number of used electrospindles could increase its economic convenience, as the disassembly phase may be optimized. De-manufacturing strategies could extend the useful lifecycle of products and introduce additional revenue streams, with intangible effects: information about the use phase, marketing leverage, end-of-life treatment, policies forecasting and strengthened customer relationships. However, it may bring high risks as well, such as cannibalization and investments. For a more aware prioritization of to-be scenarios, future works may exploit more in detail the disassembly time quantification; additionally, the analysis of the main failure modes and events may stand aside from the economic and environmental as-is analysis.

Abstract:The closed-loop supply chain has an immense significance on the business policy of the next day's world. This article appraises a closed-loop dual-channel supply chain of the returned used product and fresh materials. In the proposed circular economical modelling, the retailer collects the consumers' obsolete products by paying satisfactory rewards and then sends the screened materials to the manufacturer for the production process. The manufacturer produces environmentally friendly greening products by using recycled items and fresh materials, where the manufacturer, alone or together with the retailer, can adjust the green innovation level. Two parallel competitive channels sell the products in the market where the manufacturer introduces a direct channel to sell them through an online contract with the consumers, and the retailer operates the traditional market for his business. The demand patterns of the players are sensitive with selling prices and green innovation level of the products and then a mathematical model is formulated and analysed in light of the decentralized scenarios for various manufacturer Stackelberg, Retailer Stackelberg, vertical Nash games, and the centralized system. The main aims of the proposed model is to investigate both the analytically and numerically the selling prices, rewards for obsolete items, and green innovation levels under different frameworks for the players' best strategies. The analysis of the proposed model emphasizes on the impact of green innovation cost, production cost, screening acceptance ratios, and how to enhance the willingness to return factor, greening factor, and respective profits.

Abstract:Recycling of materials has two significant perspectives: it may reduce the waste, and also, it can save raw materials. This study deals with the returned-obsolete products and the fresh items in a closed-loop dual-channel supply chain, where the manufacturer operates the whole production department and sells a percentage of products directly through his online channel, and delivers the rest of them to the retailer at a wholesale price. Additionally, the retailer collects unused items from customers with an appropriate reward to determine whether the customers intend to return the items. Both players screen the condition of the collected materials and then transfer the qualified materials for further use. Our paper formulates a mathematical model to evaluate scenarios such as scenarios manufacturer Stackelberg, Retailer Stackelberg, vertical Nash under the decentralized system, and a centralized system. The study is primarily concerned with finding optimal pricing plans and rewarding the customer analytically under various scenarios. Numerical explorations signify that the manufacturer Stackelberg's scenario is more economical than the retailer Stackelberg and vertical Nash frameworks. The findings illustrate that the higher acceptance ratios of the returned materials benefit all the members and increase the keenness to return. Also, it is important for members to control the price-sensitive parameters within the demand function in order to save their markets. Further, the study suggests that an increase in production cost forces us to collect more returned materials, regardless of whether the increased remanufacturing cost suppresses that collection.

Abstract:Inspired by a circular economy paradigm, an evolving momentum of policies and legislations aims to close the loop of product lifecycles through improved level of recycling, remanufacturing, and reuse, with the objective of adding value to the economy while not endangering the environment. However, the trade-off between the environmental and economic sustainability of designing business processes is inevitable. To address this trade-off in the supply chain context, competing objectives regarding both cost minimization and reduction in carbon emission should be simultaneously considered and integrated into a comprehensive model. This complexity is however elevated when uncertainty of demand is taken into consideration. In this study, the design of a closed-loop supply chain is investigated where competing objectives of cost and sustainability of supply chain operations are evaluated under demand uncertainty. Augmented Weighted Tchebycheff (AWT) and ε-constraint methods are employed to address the multi-objectivity of the problem while a robust optimization approach is applied to deal with the demand uncertainty. The results confirm that the proposed approach provides efficient solutions for designing a green closed-loop supply chain network.

Abstract:By offering to trade-in one unit of old product, at a discounted price while selling new products, "exchange-old-for-new" (EON) programs have been considered efficient ways of expanding market for durable goods. Starting from the choice behavior of customers, this paper studies optimal pricing and remanufacturing decisions for firms that adopt the EON program. Specifically, considering a supply chain that consists of one manufacturer and one retailer, we investigate two business models: (i) in the manufacturer-initiated scenario, the manufacturer launches an EON program and owns all the old items that are returned; he remanufactures all (or a portion) of the old items and sells them to a secondary market. (ii) In the retailer-initiated scenario, any old items that are returned belong to the retailer; she remanufactures the old items and sells them to the secondary market. An in-depth comparison between the optimal decisions in the two models is conducted in this paper. We show it is possible that a firm may be even more profitable from being a "free-rider", instead of offering an EON program by himself/herself. Based on a centralized supply chain as a benchmark, an exchange-discount-sharing contract is proposed to coordinate the supply chain and to improve the overall welfare of customers. Numerical experiments are conducted to show the profit impact for the supply chain members, which uncover some interesting managerial insights for the proper adoption of the most efficient EON programs. Abstract:<p>The implementation of a cyclic production scheduling approach has been shown to enhance resource utilization and to improve shop floor control. Recently, closed-loop supply chain management has become a topic of strategic importance due to its positive environmental and economic impacts. As a result, many organizations integrated manufacturing and remanufacturing operations to optimize the efficiency of their forward and reverse supply chain processes. The focus of this research is to integrate cyclic production scheduling policies in a two-stage closed-loop supply chain. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear program to generate an optimal cyclic production schedule with no demand shortages that minimizes the sum of holding and setup costs under a given cyclic delivery schedule required by the customer. The results of the sensitivity analysis revealed that the number of products, the product return rate, and the feasibility ratio are the most critical parameters affecting the model computational performance. For large-sized problems, a heuristic procedure is proposed to generate near optimal production schedules in reasonable computational times. Finally, the illustration of the proposed integrated model with a real case study demonstrated the cost advantage of implementing cyclic production schedules under closed-loop supply chain policy versus cyclic production schedules under manufacturing only policy.</p>
