Abstract:Little attention has been paid to the impacts of institutional–human–environment dimensions on the outcome of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) abatement. Through the diagnostic social–ecological system (SES) framework, this review paper aimed to investigate what and how the multifaceted social, physical, and governance factors affected the success level of seven selected Asia-Pacific countries (namely, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, and New Zealand) in combatting COVID-19. Drawing on statistical data from the Our World In Data website, we measured the COVID-19 severity or abatement success level of the countries on the basis of cumulative positive cases, average daily cases, and mortality rates for the period of 1 February 2020 to 30 June 2020. A qualitative content analysis using three codes, i.e., present (P), partially present (PP), and absent (A) for each SES attribute, as well as score calculation and rank ordering for government response effectiveness and the abatement success level across the countries, was undertaken. Not only did the standard coding process ensure data comparability but the data were deemed substantially reliable with Cohen’s kappa of 0.76. Among 13 attributes of the SES factors, high facility adequacy, comprehensive COVID-19 testing policies, strict lockdown measures, imposition of penalty, and the high trust level towards the government seemed to be significant in determining the COVID-19 severity in a country. The results show that Vietnam (ranked first) and New Zealand (ranked second), with a high presence of attributes/design principles contributing to high-level government stringency and health and containment indices, successfully controlled the virus, while Indonesia (ranked seventh) and Japan (ranked sixth), associated with the low presence of design principles, were deemed least successful. Two lessons can be drawn: (i) having high number of P for SES attributes does not always mean a panacea for the pandemic; however, it would be detrimental to a country if it lacked them severely, and (ii) some attributes (mostly from the governance factor) may carry higher weightage towards explaining the success level. This comparative study providing an overview of critical SES attributes in relation to COVID-19 offers novel policy insights, thus helping policymakers devise more strategic, coordinated measures, particularly for effective country preparedness and response in addressing the current and the future health crisis.

Abstract:The COVID-19 death rate has varied by country. Although studies have suggested some biomedical risk factors including hypertension, social factors may not yet be explored enough to prepare for the next pandemic, which might include health policies such as the role of achievement of universal health coverage (UHC). In this study, global data were probed from an ecological perspective. COVID-19 pandemic-relevant data were obtained from websites provided by WHO, UN, and academic society. The outcome variable was defined as annual COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 population in 2020 and 2021. The chronic disease mortality defined by addition of mortalities from cardiovascular diseases and neoplasms in 2019 in the same unit as the outcome variable, and Socio-Demographic Index (SDI), a new metric for social development created by Global Burden of Disease Study were used for main variables. Also, non-communicable disease risk factors and social factors including the UHC service coverage index were for independent variables. Countries which had elderly population (age > = 65 y.o.) over seven per cent and between middle and high SDI quintiles (divisions by SDI) were included for analyses. The COVID-19 mortality was significantly higher in 2021 than in 2020, particularly in high-middle SDI quintile countries. A multiple regression model suggested that the preceding chronic disease mortality positively correlated to the COVID-19 mortality, in contrast to a negative correlation of SDI (Table 1). By multiple logistic regression models using dummy variables for the three-quantile groups of the SDI-to-mortality negative slope coefficient levels as an indicator of social disparity, i.e., Mild Medium and Steep, respectively, aging (elderlies’ proportion), raised blood pressure prevalence (SBP > = 140 and/or DBP > = 90 mmHg), obesity prevalence (BMI > = 30 kg/m2), current tobacco use, and alcohol consumption per capita had a positive correlation as a way of slope gradient order. On the other hand, among risk factors, diabetes prevalence had a negative correlation to Steep. With data from a systematic review, angiotensin converting enzyme 1 homozygote insertion (II) polymorphism prevalence was correlated with Mild. The UHC service coverage index had a significant protective correlation. Taken together, the disparity in the chronic disease burden was a culprit for the impact of the pandemic, especially among countries in the middle of transition to advanced society, represented by middle and high-middle SDI. Therefore, accelerating primary care system under UHC should offer the key to the alleviated chronic disease burden and the next pandemic preparedness.

Abstract:The declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic has largely amplified the spread of related information on social platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook and WeChat. In this work, we investigate how the disease and information co-evolve in the population. We focus on COVID-19 and its information during the period when the disease was widely spread in China, i.e., from January 25th to March 24th, 2020. The co-evolution between disease and information is explored via the spatial analysis of the two spreading processes. We visualize the geo-location of both disease and information at the province level and find that disease is more geo-localized compared to information. High correlation between disease and information data is observed, and also people care about the spread of disease only when it comes to their neighborhood. Regard to the content of the information, we obtain that positive messages are more negatively correlated with the disease compared to negative and neutral messages. Additionally, two machine learning algorithms, i.e., linear regression and random forest, are introduced to further predict the number of infected using characteristics, such as disease spatial related and information-related features. We obtain that both the disease spatial related characteristics of nearby cities and information-related characteristics can help to improve the prediction accuracy. The methodology proposed in this paper may shed light on new clues of emerging infections prediction.
Spatial Modeling of Sociodemographic Risk for COVID-19 Mortality

Abstract:In early 2020, the Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) rapidly spread across the United States (US), exhibiting significant geographic variability. While several studies have examined the predictive relationships of differing factors on COVID-19 deaths, few have looked at spatiotemporal variation at refined geographic scales. The objective of this analysis is to examine this spatiotemporal variation in COVID-19 deaths with respect to association with socioeconomic, health, demographic, and political factors. We use multivariate regression applied to Health and Human Services (HHS) regions as well as nationwide county-level geographically weighted random forest (GWRF) models. Analyses were performed on data from three separate time frames which correspond to the spread of distinct viral variants in the US: pandemic onset until May 2021, May 2021 through November 2021, and December 2021 until April 2022. Multivariate regression results for all regions across three time windows suggest that existing measures of social vulnerability for disaster preparedness (SVI) are predictive of a higher degree of mortality from COVID-19. In comparison, GWRF models provide a more robust evaluation of feature importance and prediction, exposing the value of local features for prediction, such as obesity, which is obscured by coarse-grained analysis. Overall, GWRF results indicate that this more nuanced modeling strategy is useful for determining the spatial variation in the importance of sociodemographic risk factors for predicting COVID-19 mortality.

Populational Level Driving Force of COVID-19 Epidemic and Fatality: A Global Analysis

Abstract:BackgroundThe COVID-19 has become a pandemic worldwide. 216 countries and regions reported their occurrence of COVID-19 cases by 19th Sep 2020. Meanwhile, the COVID-19 had infected more than 30 million people and caused almost one million deaths until 19th Sep 2020.MethodWe scoped data related to reported epidemic durations, incidences, fatalities, and epidemic risk factors of the studied countries. Disease Development Speed (DDS), Population-Level Incidence (PLI), and Case-Fatality Rate (CFR) were calculated to assess the COVID-19 pandemic globally. The Spearman rank correlation was applied to further explore the relationship among DDS, PLI, CFR, and their influencing factors.Result216 countries and regions had reported their COVID-19 cases by 19th Sep 2020. Globally, the medians of epidemic duration, DDS, PLI, and CFR were 167 days (IQR: 158-175 days; Range: 110-221 days),4.6 (IQR: 3.1-6.0; Range: 1.8-10.1), 17.0 (IQR: 5.3-56.0; Range: 0.36-1758.3), and 2.2% (IQR: 1.3%-3.5%) respectively. DDS, PLI, and CFR were found enjoying positive correlations with the urban population proportion, UHC (Universal Health Coverage) service coverage, the population with basic handwashing facilities at home, the number of reported deaths, and the number of doctors and nurses.ConclusionNationwide development of the COVID-19, its incidence and fatality suggested regional similarity in the world. National population structure, human resources of medical staff, structure of national health expenditure, and the sanitation facility were revealed as vital risk factors for the COVID-19 in epidemiology.

Abstract:This research asks how an epidemic affects human behaviour. Probably the COVID-19 contagion is the most adverse global public health, economic, social, and technological stress since the Second World War. It affects almost all countries and challenges the globalisation particularly the global supply chain. The research community struggles with the multidimensional consequences of the SARS-CoV-2 virus infections. The critical goal is to quickly implement an efficient vaccine, as the society faces a tradeoff between death exposure and the size of the economic downturn. With this paper, we search for factors affecting contagion, mortality, and the time span between the country virus inception and first death. Additionally, we analyse the development of social media and financial markets. We applied a panel data set on all of the countries across the globe from 31 December 2019 until 31 March 2020 to investigate the patterns of epidemic development. We examined 7,642 country-daily data. We constructed classification tree regression, panel, and cross-sectional regression models. Our results support the conclusion that: 1) the speed of severity and contagion is different between themselves and across continents, 2) financial markets and social media respond differently to factors affecting contagion and severity, and 3) the time span between the first contagion in the economy and first death case cannot be plausibly explained with time-invariant variables. This research supports the policymakers with robust data for the informative allocation of scarce resources.

Abstract:Infectious diseases continue to be a global health menace to society. Admittedly, there have been improvements in public health infrastructure and structural response to these diseases, however, a lot more needs to be done to have a firm grip. This study applied the geographically weighted poisson regression (GWPR) model to study the spatial variations in the effects of socioeconomic factors on COVID-19 Mortality in the African subregion. The performance of the GWPR model was compared to the conventional Poisson regression model. The results suggest that accounting for the spatial heterogeneity through the GWPR model (RMSE = 100.604, MAE = 70.582, Pseudo R 2 = 0.773) improves the modelling performance compared to the conventional Poisson regression model (RMSE = 118.574, MAE = 83.054, Pseudo R 2 = 0.530). In addition, the effects of all the socioeconomic variables considered (i.e., educational index, unemployment rates, income index, gross domestic product, and forest area) on COVID-19 mortality were found to be spatial non-stational across the subregion. These results highlight the need to draw preventive and response policies applicable to infectious diseases with greater consideration of the different geographical points on the continent.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic provided an additional spotlight on the longstanding socioeconomic/health impacts of redlining and has added to the myriad of environmental justice issues, which has caused significant loss of life, health, and productive work. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that a person with any selected underlying health conditions is more likely to experience severe COVID-19 symptoms, with more than 81% of COVID-19-related deaths among people aged 65 years and older. The effects of COVID-19 are not homogeneous across populations, varying by socioeconomic status, PM 2.5 exposure, and geographic location. This variability is supported by analysis of existing data as a function of the number of cases and deaths per capita/1,00,000 persons. We investigate the degree of correlation between these parameters, excluding health conditions and age. We found that socioeconomic variables alone contribute to ~40% of COVID-19 variability, while socioeconomic parameters, combined with political affiliation, geographic location, and PM 2.5 exposure levels, can explain ~60% of COVID-19 variability per capita when using an OLS regression model; socioeconomic factors contribute ~28% to COVID-19-related deaths. Using spatial coordinates in a Random Forest (RF) regressor model significantly improves prediction accuracy by ~120%. Data visualization products reinforce the fact that the number of COVID-19 deaths represents 1% of COVID-19 cases in the US and globally. A larger number of democratic voters, larger per-capita income, and age >65 years is negatively correlated (associated with a decrease) with the number of COVID cases per capita. Several distinct regions of negative and positive correlations are apparent, which are dominated by two major regions of anticorrelation: (1) the West Coast, which exhibits high PM 2.5 concentrations and fewer COVID-19 cases; and (2) the middle portion of the US, showing mostly high number of COVID-19 cases and low PM 2.5 concentrations. This paper underscores the importance of exercising caution and prudence when making definitive causal statements about the contribution of air quality constituents (such as PM 2.5 ) and socioeconomic factors to COVID-19 mortality rates. It also highlights the importance of implementing better health/lifestyle practices and examines the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable populations, particularly regarding preexisting health conditions and age. Although PM 2.5 contributes comparable deaths (~7M) per year, globally as smoking cigarettes (~8.5M), quantifying any causal contribution toward COVID-19 is non-trivial, given the primary causes of COVID-19 death and confounding factors. This becomes more complicated as air pollution was reduced significantly during the lockdowns, especially during 2020. This statistical analysis provides a modular framework, that can be further expanded with the context of multilevel analysis (MLA). This study highlights the need to address socioeconomic and environmental disparities to better prepare for future pandemics. By understanding how factors such as socioeconomic status, political affiliation, geographic location, and PM 2.5 exposure contribute to the variability in COVID-19 outcomes, policymakers and public health officials can develop targeted strategies to protect vulnerable populations. Implementing improved health and lifestyle practices and mitigating environmental hazards will be essential in reducing the impact of future public health crises on marginalized communities. These insights can guide the development of more resilient and equitable health systems capable of responding effectively to similar future scenarios.

Abstract:Since December 2019, the world has been witnessing the gigantic effect of an unprecedented global pandemic called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) - COVID-19. So far, 38,619,674 confirmed cases and 1,093,522 confirmed deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported. In the United States (US), the cases and deaths are recorded as 7,833,851 and 215,199. Several timely researches have discussed the local and global effects of the confounding factors on COVID-19 casualties in the US. However, most of these studies considered little about the time varying associations between and among these factors, which are crucial for understanding the outbreak of the present pandemic. Therefore, this study adopts various relevant approaches, including local and global spatial regression models and machine learning to explore the causal effects of the confounding factors on COVID-19 counts in the contiguous US. Totally five spatial regression models, spatial lag model (SLM), ordinary least square (OLS), spatial error model (SEM), geographically weighted regression (GWR) and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR), are performed at the county scale to take into account the scale effects on modelling. For COVID-19 cases, ethnicity, crime, and income factors are found to be the strongest covariates and explain the maximum model variances. For COVID-19 deaths, both (domestic and international) migration and income factors play a crucial role in explaining spatial differences of COVID-19 death counts across counties. The local coefficient of determination (R2) values derived from the GWR and MGWR models are found very high over the Wisconsin-Indiana-Michigan (the Great Lake) region, as well as several parts of Texas, California, Mississippi and Arkansas.

Abstract:Abstract We identify 21 predetermined country-level factors that explain marked variations in weekly COVID-19 morbidity and mortality across 91 countries between January and the end of 2020. Besides factors commonly associated with infectious diseases (e.g., population and tourism activities), we discover a list of country characteristics that shape COVID-19 outcomes. Among demographic–geographic factors, the male-to-female ratio, population density, and urbanization aggravate the severity of COVID-19, while education, temperature, and religious diversity mitigate the impact of the pandemic on morbidity and mortality. For the political-legal dimension, democracy and political corruption are aggravating factors. In contrast, female leadership, the strength of legal systems, and public trust in government significantly reduce infections and deaths. In terms of socio-economic aspects, GDP per capita, income inequality, and happiness (i.e., life satisfaction) lead to worse COVID-19 outcomes. Interestingly, technology advancement increases morbidity but reduces mortality. For healthcare factors, SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) experience and healthcare infrastructure help countries perform better in combating the pandemic.

The Cross-Scale Correlations Between Individuals and Nations in COVID-19 Mortality

Abstract:It is challenging to quantitatively clarify the determining medical and social factors of COVID-19 mortality, which varied by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude across countries. Here, we present evidence that the temporal evolution of mortality follows a logistic law for 54 countries in four waves. A universal linear law is found between the early mortality growth time and the epidemic duration, one of the most important quantities, with a factor of 7.3 confirmed by data. Saturation mortality is found to have a power law relationship with median age and bed occupancy, which quantitatively explains the great variation in mortality based on the two key thresholds of median age (= 38) and bed occupancy (= 22%). We predict that deaths will be reduced by 38.5% when the number of beds is doubled for countries with older populations. Facing the next wave of the epidemic, this model can make early predictions on the epidemic duration and hospital bed demand.

Abstract:The Schottky-barrier height for Si(111)-Pb diodes is known to depend on the initial reconstruction at monolayer coverages. While other studies have concentrated on the details of the initial stages of growth, we present evidence of structural differences at the buried interface which correlate with previously reported differences in the Schottky-barrier heights. X-ray diffraction measurements show that for growth on the Si(111)7×7-Pb phase the reconstruction is essentially unchanged by burying whereas the Si(111)√3 × √3 R30°-Pb reconstruction is destroyed.
Impact of urbanisation and environmental factors on spatial distribution of COVID-19 cases during the early phase of epidemic in Singapore

Abstract:Geographical weighted regression (GWR) can be used to explore the COVID-19 transmission pattern between cases. This study aimed to explore the influence from environmental and urbanisation factors, and the spatial relationship between epidemiologically-linked, unlinked and imported cases during the early phase of the epidemic in Singapore. Spatial relationships were evaluated with GWR modelling. Community COVID-19 cases with residential location reported from 21st January 2020 till 17th March 2020 were considered for analyses. Temperature, relative humidity, population density and urbanisation are the variables used as exploratory variables for analysis. ArcGIS was used to process the data and perform geospatial analyses. During the early phase of COVID-19 epidemic in Singapore, significant but weak correlation of temperature with COVID-19 incidence (significance 0.5–1.5) was observed in several sub-zones of Singapore. Correlations between humidity and incidence could not be established. Across sub-zones, high residential population density and high levels of urbanisation were associated with COVID-19 incidence. The incidence of COVID-19 case types (linked, unlinked and imported) within sub-zones varied differently, especially those in the western and north-eastern regions of Singapore. Areas with both high residential population density and high levels of urbanisation are potential risk factors for COVID-19 transmission. These findings provide further insights for directing appropriate resources to enhance infection prevention and control strategies to contain COVID-19 transmission.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered an unprecedented social and economic crisis. This study aims at investigating the impact of socio-economic indicators on the levels of COVID-19 (confirmed and death cases) in sub-Saharan Africa. The investigation makes use of the readily accessible public data: we obtain COVID-19 data from Johns Hopkins and socio-economic indicators from the World Bank. The socio-economic indicators (independent variables) used in the multilinear regression were GDP per capita, gross national income per capita, life expectancy, population density (people per sq. km of land area), the population aged 65 and above, current health expenditure per capita and total population. The dependent variables used were the COVID-19 confirmed and death cases. Amongst the seven socio-economic indicators, only 4 showed a statistically significant impact on COVID-19 cases: population density, gross national income per capita, population aged 65 and above and total population. The obtained R2 of 69% and 63% indicated that the socio-economic indicators captured and explained the variation of COVID-19 confirmed cases and COVID-19 death cases, respectively. The startling results obtained in this study were the negative but statistically significant relationship between COVID-19 deaths and population density and the positive and statistically significant relationship between gross national income per capita and COVID-19 cases (both confirmed and deaths). Both these results are at odds with literature investigating these indicators in Europe, China, India and the UK.

We studied coronavirus disease (COVID-19) mortality until 31st December 2020, using an ecological study design, considering baseline characteristics and responses that might account for the uneven impact of the pandemic. A multivariable regression model was developed to explore key determinants. Key variables in the West were contrasted with those in the East, and speed of response was examined. Worldwide, 2.24 million COVID-19 deaths were documented in 2020. Western countries reported a median mortality 114 times that of the East (684 vs. 6.0 per million). Significant correlates of mortality in countries with at least 1 million population were median age, obesity prevalence, and democracy index; political stability and experience of SARS in 2002–2003 were protective; health system variables and income inequality were not associated. Outputs of the model were consistent when adjusted for stringency index, timeliness of stay-at-home requirements, and geographical autocorrelation. The West experiences a much higher COVID-19 mortality than the East. Despite structural advantages in the West, delays in national responses early on resulted in a loss of control over the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Although the early success of the East was sustained in the second half of 2020, the region remains extremely vulnerable to COVID-19 until enough people are immunized.

Associating COVID-19 Severity with Urban Factors: A Case Study of Wuhan

Abstract:Wuhan encountered a serious attack in the first round of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has resulted in a public health social impact, including public mental health. Based on the Weibo help data, we inferred the spatial distribution pattern of the epidemic situation and its impacts. Seven urban factors, i.e., urban growth, general hospital, commercial facilities, subway station, land-use mixture, aging ratio, and road density, were selected for validation with the ordinary linear model, in which the former six factors presented a globally significant association with epidemic severity. Then, the geographically weighted regression model (GWR) was adopted to identify their unevenly distributed effects in the urban space. Among the six factors, the distribution and density of major hospitals exerted significant effects on epidemic situation. Commercial facilities appear to be the most prevalently distributed significant factor on epidemic situation over the city. Urban growth, in particular the newly developed residential quarters with high-rise buildings around the waterfront area of Hanyang and Wuchang, face greater risk of the distribution. The influence of subway stations concentrates at the adjacency place where the three towns meet and some near-terminal locations. The aging ratio of the community dominantly affects the hinterland of Hankou to a broader extent than other areas in the city. Upon discovering the result, a series of managerial implications that coordinate various urban factors were proposed. This research may contribute toward developing specific planning and design responses for different areas in the city based on a better understanding of the occurrence, transmission, and diffusion of the COVID-19 epidemic in the metropolitan area.

Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic represents the most unprecedented global challenge in recent times. As the global community attempts to manage the pandemic in the long term, it is pivotal to understand what factors drive prevalence rates and to predict the future trajectory of the virus. Objective: This study had 2 objectives. First, it tested the statistical relationship between socioeconomic status and COVID-19 prevalence. Second, it used machine learning techniques to predict cumulative COVID-19 cases in a multicountry sample of 182 countries. Taken together, these objectives will shed light on socioeconomic status as a global risk factor of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This research used exploratory data analysis and supervised machine learning methods. Exploratory analysis included variable distribution, variable correlations, and outlier detection. Following this, the following 3 supervised regression techniques were applied: linear regression, random forest, and adaptive boosting (AdaBoost). Results were evaluated using k-fold cross-validation and subsequently compared to analyze algorithmic suitability. The analysis involved 2 models. First, the algorithms were trained to predict 2021 COVID-19 prevalence using only 2020 reported case data. Following this, socioeconomic indicators were added as features and the algorithms were trained again. The Human Development Index (HDI) metrics of life expectancy, mean years of schooling, expected years of schooling, and gross national income were used to approximate socioeconomic status. Results: All variables correlated positively with the 2021 COVID-19 prevalence, with R 2 values ranging from 0.55 to 0.85. Using socioeconomic indicators, COVID-19 prevalence was predicted with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Using 2020 reported case rates as a lone predictor to predict 2021 prevalence rates, the average predictive accuracy of the algorithms was low (R 2 =0.543). When socioeconomic indicators were added alongside 2020 prevalence rates as features, the average predictive performance improved considerably (R 2 =0.721) and all error statistics decreased. Thus, adding socioeconomic indicators alongside 2020 reported case data optimized the prediction of COVID-19 prevalence to a considerable degree. Linear regression was the strongest learner with R 2 =0.693 on the first model and R 2 =0.763 on the second model, followed by random forest (0.481 and 0.722) and AdaBoost (0.454 and 0.679). Following this, the second model was retrained using a selection of additional COVID-19 risk factors (population density, median age, and vaccination uptake) instead of the HDI metrics. However, average accuracy dropped to 0.649, which highlights the value of socioeconomic status as a predictor of COVID-19 cases in the chosen sample. Conclusions: The results show that socioeconomic status is an important variable to consider in future epidemiological modeling, and highlights the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic as a social phenomenon and a health care phenomenon. This paper also puts forward new considerations about the application of statistical and machine learning techniques to understand and combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nursing documentation in clinical practice : Instrument development and evaluation of a comprehensive intervention programme

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to describe and analyse effects of a two-year comprehensive intervention concerning nursing documentation in patient records when using the VIPS model a model designed to structure nursing documentation. Registered Nurses (RNs) from three acute care hospital wards participated in a two-year intervention programme, in addition, a fourth ward was used for comparison. The intervention consisted of education about nursing documentation in accordance with the VIPS model and organisational changes. To evaluate effects of the intervention patient records (n=269) were audited on three occasions: before the intervention, immediately after the intervention and three years after the intervention. For this purpose, a patient record audit instrument, the Cat-ch-Ing, was constructed and tested. The instrument aims at measuring both quantitatively and qualitatively to what extent the content of the nursing process is documented in the patient record. Inter-rater reliability, content validity, criterion-related validity, construct validity and internal consistency of the instrument were found to be satisfactory. A questionnaire was answered by 34 RNs to measure effects of the intervention. Their answer score was compared with the answer score of 343 RNs from other hospitals who had received a three-day course on nursing documentation based on the VIPS model. The questionnaire consisted of statements describing prerequisites and consequences about nursing documentation. Twenty RNs who had participated in the intervention programme also participated in focus group discussions on the effects of the intervention. The purpose was to describe their perceptions of and attitudes towards the effects of the intervention and to generate hypotheses for future research. The findings indicated a significant audit score increase in both quantity and quality of nursing documentation in the intervention wards immediately and three years after the intervention. The RNs who answered the questionnaire were largely in agreement about most of the specified consequences and prerequisites of nursing documentation. They perceived their documentation to increase patients’ safety and to be beneficial to RNs in their daily work. The use of the VIPS model was considered a facilitator of the documentation process. Statements in the focus group discussions were that the structured way of documenting nursing care made the RNs ‘think more’ and ‘think in a different way’ about their work with their patients. Two types of role changing for the RNs were reported: change from a medical technical focus to a more nursing expertise orientation and change from a “hands on clinician” to more of an administrator. This study demonstrates that training RNs to use a structured documentation system improves their record-keeping and care planning skills, however, such a system is not sufficient. There are likely other factors in the organisation of the clinical practice that influence the action of documenting nursing care in addition to lack of knowledge and practice.

Abstract:COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease that has infected over 136 million people worldwide with over 2.9 million deaths as of 11 April 2021. In March 2020, the WHO declared COVID-19 as a pandemic and countries began to implement measures to control the spread of the virus. The spread and the death rates of the virus displayed dramatic differences among countries globally, showing that there are several factors affecting its spread and mortality. By utilizing the cumulative number of cases from John Hopkins University, the recovery rate, death rate, and the number of active, recovered, and death cases were simulated to analyse the trends and patterns within the chosen countries. 10 countries from 3 different case severity categories (high cases, medium cases, and low cases) and 5 continents (Asia, North America, South America, Europe, and Oceania) were studied. A generalized SEIR model which considers control measures such as isolation, and preventive measures such as vaccination is applied in this study. This model is able to capture not only the dynamics between the states, but also the time evolution of the states by using the fourth-order-Runge–Kutta process. This study found no significant patterns in the countries under the same case severity category, suggesting that there are other factors contributing to the pattern in these countries. One of the factors influencing the pattern in each country is the population’s age. COVID-19 related deaths were found to be notably higher among older people, indicating that countries comprising of a larger proportion of older age groups have an increased risk of experiencing higher death rates. Tighter governmental control measures led to fewer infections and eventually reduced the number of death cases, while increasing the recovery rate, and early implementations were found to be far more effective in controlling the spread of the virus and produced better outcomes.

Abstract:Abstract Background Tools for assessing a country’s capacity in the face of public health emergencies must be reviewed, as they were not predictive of the COVID-19 pandemic. Social cohesion and risk communication, which are related to trust in government and trust in others, may have influenced adherence to government measures and mortality rates due to COVID-19. Objective To analyse the association between indicators of social cohesion and risk communication and COVID-19 outcomes in 213 countries. Results Social cohesion and risk communication, in their dimensions (public trust in politicians, trust in others, social safety nets, and equal distribution of resources index), were associated with lower excess mortality due to COVID-19. The number of COVID-19-related disorder events and government transparency were associated with higher excess mortality due to COVID-19. The lower the percentage of unemployed people, the higher the excess mortality due to COVID-19. Most of the social cohesion and risk communication variables were associated with better vaccination indicators, except for social capital and engaged society, which had no statistically significant association. The greater the gender equality, the better the vaccination indicators, such as the number of people who received all doses. Conclusion Public trust in politicians, trust in others, equal distribution of resources and government that cares about the most vulnerable, starting with the implementation of programs, such as cash transfers and combating food insecurity, were factors that reduced the excess mortality due to COVID-19. Countries, especially those with limited resources and marked by social, economic, and health inequalities, must invest in strengthening social cohesion and risk communication, which are robust strategies to better cope with future pandemics.
