Abstract:Research aimed at understanding the inhibition effect of CaO on polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) formation form dioxins precursors, such as chlorophenols (CPs) and chlorobenzenes (CBs). The results indicated that a clear dioxin inhibition effect occurred both in open and sealed system when CaO was used. In the open system, PCDDs were the main congeners and the inhibition efficiency was all over 99% in the experiments. In the experiments with CaO, less than 0.1% of the initial PCP was detected in the absorption tube and only about 1% of the initial PCP was examined as calcium pentachlorophenate in the reaction tube. In the sealed system, the inhibition efficiency was over 90% at temperature range between 280 and 450°C when PCP was used as model precursor. When HCB and 2,3,4,5-T4CP replaced PCP, significant inhibition effect was also observed. As CaO has the advantageous properties of non-toxicity and non-volatile nature, it is our hope that the result will contribute to the development of a new technique to cope with the problem of dioxin pollution in MWIs.
Suppression on PCDD/Fs formation by a novel inhibition system consisting of phosphorous-based compounds coupled with a chlorine-deactivation material

Abstract:The SN-containing inhibitors are effective for suppressing the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in the post-combustion zone of municipal solid waste incineration systems, but the industrial application of the SN-containing inhibitors is restricted by the high cost and the generation of corrosive by-products (e.g., SOx). To develop cost-effective and environmentally friendly inhibitors, a new inhibition system consisting of P-based compounds (i.e., NH4H2PO4 (ADP) and KH2PO4 (PDP)) and a chlorine-deactivation material (CaO) was proposed in this study. Also, the performance of this inhibition system in terms of suppressing PCDD/Fs formation was evaluated in an experimental system which simulated PCDD/Fs generation in the post-combustion zone. Generally, the formation of PCDD/Fs was effectively suppressed by over 95 % by the mixed inhibitors (ADP/CaO and PDP/CaO) and the individual inhibitor of ADP. Based on the observation on PCDD/F-fingerprints and the chemical speciation of Cl and Cu, the mechanisms of inhibitors were identified as: (i) passivating metal catalyst by converting the speciation of Cu from chlorides and Cu2+ with high reactivities to phosphates, oxides, and Cu+ with low reactivities, and (ii) deactivating Cl by CaO to prevent the formation of organic Cl which was critical for PCDD/Fs formation. In addition, both mechanisms were supported by (i) the better performance of inhibitors on suppressing the PCDD/F-congeners formed via de novo pathway than congeners synthesized from chlorophenols and (ii) lower degrees of chlorination of PCDD/Fs for reaction systems with CaO involved than other systems.
Formation behavior of PCDD/Fs during waste pyrolysis and incineration: Effect of temperature, calcium oxide addition, and redox atmosphere

Abstract:The clean and efficient utilization of municipal solid waste (MSW) has attracted increasing concerns in recent years. Pyrolysis of MSW is one of the promising options due to the production of high-value intermediates and the inhibition of pollutants at reducing atmosphere. Herein, the formation behavior of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) during MSW pyrolysis and incineration was experimentally investigated and compared. The influence of reaction temperature, CaO addition, and redox atmosphere on PCDD/Fs formation were compared and discussed. The results showed as the pyrolysis temperature increased, the mass concentration and international toxicity equivalence quantity of PCDD/Fs initially peaked at ∼750 °C before declining. Most of the generated PCDD/Fs were concentrated in the liquid and gaseous products, accounting for ∼90% of the total. Among liquid products, octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (O8CDD), 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorodibenzofuran and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptachlorodibenzofuran (H7CDF) were the most crucial mass concentration contributors, while in gas products, high-chlorinated PCDD/Fs, such as O8CDD, octachlorodibenzofuran (O8CDF) and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-H7CDF were predominant. Compared to incineration, the formation of PCDD/Fs was 7-20 times greater than that from pyrolysis. This discrepancy can be attributed to the hydrogen-rich and oxygen-deficient atmosphere during pyrolysis, which effectively inhibited the Deacon reaction and the formation of C-Cl bonds, thereby reducing the active chlorine in the system. The addition of in-situ CaO additives also decreased the active chlorine content in the system, bolstering the inhibiting of PCDD/Fs formation during MSW pyrolysis.

Abstract:This study is carried out in two full-scale (300 t/d) municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWI), focusing on the inhibition effect on polychlorinated-rho-dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) formation by the Sulfur-, Phosphorus-, and Nitrogen-containing inhibitors. The inhibition efficiencies of total PCDD/F range from 45.77 % to 58.55 %, meanwhile, from 50.1 % to 57.6 % for toxic PCDD/F. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results conduct the inhibition effect on the three key factors of PCDD/F formation: catalytic metal, carbon source and chlorine source. Inhibitors can increase the proportion of inorganic chlorine form at the ash surface. The changes of sulfur and phosphorus forms support the inhibition mechanisms of PCDD/F. De novo synthesis is the stable inhibition pathway in this study, meanwhile, the chlorophenols-route and dibenzodioxin and dibenzofuran chlorination also work in some tests. The results are the basics for further industrial application of PCDD/F inhibitors and benefit in controlling the PCDD/F emission from MSWI.
Influence of Metal Oxides on PCDD/Fs Formation from Pentachlorophenol.

Abstract:Chlorophenols (ClPhs) are considered as important precursors for PCDD/Fs formation. The influences of series of metal oxides including MgO, Al2O3, CaO, BaO, TiO2, V2O5, MnO2, Fe2O3, Co3O4, CuO, Ag2O, ZnO, HgO, SnO, PbO, La2O3, CeO2, and Eu2O3 on PCDD/Fs formation from pentachlorophenol (PCP) were investigated in a laboratory-scale reactor. The results indicated that most of the above metal oxides have obvious suppressing effects on the total amount of PCDD/Fs formation from precursor PCP except for CuO, ZnO, MnO2, TiO2 and Co3O4 with promotion effects at 280°C for 2h. Although MgO, Al2O3, Fe2O3, PbO, La2O3 and Eu2O3 could reduce the amount of octachlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD), they promote the formation of more toxic 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD at the same time. The total suppressing efficiencies of several metal oxides including CaO, BaO, PbO, Ag2O, HgO and SnO which have lower Z/r (charge to radius ratio) <2 are all over 90%. The theories of generalized acid–base and atomic parameter (Z/r) were used to speculate the effecting mechanisms. The factors including time and temperature on suppressing efficiencies of CaO, BaO and PbO have also been studied in the present paper. The results showed that the total suppressing efficiencies of CaO, BaO and PbO increase with the increase of heated time and temperature.
Effects of Calcium-Based Sorbents on Pcdd/F Formation from Pentachlorophenol Combustion Process

Abstract:Calcium-based sorbents are widely employed to reduce the acidic gases emission from combustion processes, and also have effects on trace organic pollutants formation and emission. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of calcium-based sorbents on pentachlorophenol (PCP) forming PCDDs/Fs during high temperature combustion processes. The results indicated that highly chlorinated PCDD/F homologues were the predominant dioxin products from PCP thermo decomposition, and only minor increasing of PCDDs happened when Ca/Cl ratio was lower than 1, while a major jump occurred when Ca/Cl ratio increased from 1 to 2. The CaO addition clearly promoted the production of all chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins homologue and 4-7DFs homologue. Comparison of total PCDD/F emission and its I-TEQ for three different calcium-based sorbents addition (CaO, CaCO3, basic fly ash) indicated that CaO and fly ash containing CaO had almost the same promotion effects on PCDDs/Fs originated from PCP, while CaCO3 inhibit PCDD/F formation greatly with inhibition efficiency up to 70%. Such effects may be partly proved by the observed clearly different micro-surface structures of their reaction residues. The mechanism of CaO on condensation and dechlorination reactions for PCP forming PCDDs and acid-base interaction were proposed to speculate the promotion effects of CaO, and the reaction precedence was used to speculate the inhibition effects of CaCO3 on PCDDs/Fs originated from PCP. The results of the present paper might be useful for the industrial application of calcium-based sorbents to control PCDD/F emission.
Development of phosphorus-based inhibitors for PCDD/Fs suppression

Abstract:Inhibition mechanisms of sulfur-, nitrogen- and phosphorus- based inhibitors on the de novo synthesis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) were studied by exploring speciation evolution of carbon, chorine and copper in fly ash under laboratory-scale experiments. Significant inhibition of PCDD/Fs by thiourea (TUA) and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) was observed as 97.2% and 98.2%, respectively, except for potassium dihydrogen phosphate (PDP). ADP and PDP exhibited better inhibition on PCDFs than on PCDDs, whereas TUA exhibited the opposite effect. After adding inhibitors, the proportion of C-O/C=O/O-C=O bonds at the surface of fly ash increased, and stronger oxidation of carbon occurred, together with the conversion from Cu2+ to Cu+ and the inhibition of organic chlorine formation. Kinetic model results indicated that TUA might either suppress the carbon gasification or promote the decomposition of PCDD/Fs, resulting in a remarkable inhibition of PCDD/Fs formation. Simulated chemical reaction equilibrium further comfirmed that catalytic metal could be deactivated into CuS and Cu2S by sulfur, and into Cu2P2O7 by phosphorus. Moreover, NH3, decomposed from TUA and ADP, was able to convert Cl2 into HCl, albeit with a weaker chlorination ability. This study of inhibition mechanisms is useful for the exploration and utilization of efficient inhibitors in full-scale incinerators.
Promoting Effect of FeOx Addition on the Mechanochemically Prepared Vanadium-Based Catalyst for Real PCDD/Fs Removal and Mechanism Insight

Abstract:Industrial-use VOx-based catalysts usually have a higher active temperature window (> 250-300°C), which becomes a “bottleneck” for the practical application of PCDD/Fs catalytic degradation technology. In this work, VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalyst prepared via mechanochemically method was investigated for the catalytic removal of PCDD/Fs. The removal efficiency of 1,2-DCBz, pure PCDD/Fs gas generated in the lab, PCDD/Fs from actual flue gas, long-term were studied, and the degradation mechanism was explored using FTIR and TOFMS. The degradation efficiency of 1,2-DCBz and PCDD/Fs on VOx-FeOx/TiO2 were higher than that of VOx/TiO2 catalyst, and the optimal FeOx addition ratio was 3 wt.%. The characterization results show that the addition of FeOx can effectively improve the pore structure, surface acidity, and VOx dispersion of the catalyst, thus contributing to increasing the V5+ content and surface-active oxygen, which is conducive to the improvement of adsorption and redox performance of the catalyst. Under the actual MSWI (municipal solid waste incineration) flue gas, the PCDD/Fs removal efficiency over VTi-3Fe-MC maintained long-term stability, higher than 85% for 240 min. This result was not significantly reduced compared with the data obtained in the laboratory. According to the analysis results of intermediate products by FTIR and GC-TOFMS, it can be inferred that the epoxidation fracture of benzene ring is the rate-limiting step of dioxin catalytic degradation reaction. This work gives an in-depth view into the PCDD/Fs removal over VOx-FeOx/TiO2 catalysts and could provide guidelines for the rational design of reliable catalysts for industrial applications.
Experiments and reaction simulation for SO2 inhibition on de novo formation of PCDD/Fs

Abstract:The objective of this article is to study the inhibition characteristics of SO2 on de novo formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) at various temperatures and to explore its inhibition mechanism by simulation of reaction process utilizing HSC Chemistry 6.1 software. Model fly ash and flue gas (10%O2/5%H2O/85%N2) were used as materials of the de novo formation of PCDD/Fs in a temperature range of 200-400℃. SO2 of concentration 200 mg·m-3 was added as inhibitor in inhibiting experiments. The suppression rate and homologue distribution of PCDD/Fs were analyzed to find SO2 inhibiting characteristics. The results showed that the control ability of SO2 was obvious and became stronger along with increase of temperature. Both total suppression rates and toxic equivalent concentration of PCDD/Fs increased with temperature, at 200℃ both below 20%, at 300℃ 75.6%and 77.3%, and at 400℃ up to 89.2%and 80.5%respectively. SO2 caused a lower-chlorinated distribution of PCDD/Fs, especially for PCDDs. At higher temperature, SO2 restrained chiefly PCDFs while at lower temperature PCDDs was mainly inhibited. Besides, SO2 showed selective inhibition for dioxin isomer. At 300℃ de-chlorination of high-chlorinated PCDFs, like HpCDF and OCDF, made 2,3,7,8-TCDF increase. Based on the computation for Gibbs free energy of pivotal reactions and their equilibrium composition, SO2 preferentially reacted with CuCl2, and CuSO4 formed had no catalytic activity. Then, reaction of SO2 with Cl2 made decrease of chlorine source. So, formation of PCDD/Fs was brought down. The results of reaction simulation could not only verify and replenished the sulfur inhibition mechanism existed but also could be an effective and creative method for exploring inhibition mechanism of different kinds of inhibitors like nitrogen-compounds. This could help develop high-effective inhibitors and apply in municipal solid waste incinerator practically.

Abstract:Distillation residue is an important byproduct in industrial distillation process and was identified as hazardous waste (HW), with an anual production of over 5 million tons in China. Recent experiments found different emission characteristics of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in a same hazardous waste incinerator (HWI) due to feeding HWs. Studies on different HWs found that PCDD/Fs concentrations formed from distillation residue were significantly higher than that of other HWs, indicating a risk of PCDD/Fs excessive emission in HWIs when mixed in the feeds. In this study, a comprehensive research on distillation residue was conducted. The distillation residue had low activation energy and lost weight rapidly at 215 °C. Volatiles were mainly pyrolyzed into organics such as chloroneb (C8H8Cl2O2). Thus PCDD/Fs could be rapidly formed through precursor synthesis. Calcium oxide adsorption of gas phase PCDD/Fs and its impact on the adsorption properties of activated carbon

Abstract:Calcium oxide (CaO), utilized in semi-dry/dry desulfurization systems at municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plants, demonstrates some capability to remove polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). This study assessed the gas-phase PCDD/F removal performance of CaO, activated carbon (AC) and CaO-AC mixtures. Alone, CaO achieved removal efficiencies of only 31.9% for mass and 50.8% for I-TEQ concentration. However, CaO-AC mixtures exhibited significantly higher efficiencies, reaching 96.0% and 92.5% for mass and I-TEQ concentrations, respectively, surpassing those of AC alone, which were 74.7% and 58.5%. BET analysis indicated that CaO's limited surface area and pore structure are major constraints on its adsorption performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction enhances the adsorption between AC and PCDD/F, with adsorption energies ranging from -1.02 to -1.24 eV. Additionally, the induced dipole interactions between CaO and PCDD/F contribute to adsorption energies ranging from -1.13 to -1.43 eV. Moreover, with increasing chlorination levels, PCDD/F molecules are more predisposed to accept electron transfers from the surfaces of AC or CaO, thereby facilitating adsorption. The calculation for mixed AC and CaO showed that CaO modifies AC's properties, enhancing its ability to adsorb gas phase PCDD/Fs, with the higher adsorption energy and more electrons transfer, aligning with gas phase PCDD/Fs adsorption experiments. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of how CaO influences the PCDD/F adsorption performance of AC.

Abstract:Chlorinated contaminants are a cause of significant concern in the development of municipal solid waste (MSW) thermal treatment techniques. This study investigates the efficacy of two calcium (Ca)-based in-furnace additives, calcium oxide (CaO), and calcined dolomite (CD), at reducing the levels of chlorinated contaminants during MSW thermal treatment. The results reveal that Ca-based additives could effectively reduce the chlorine (Cl) content by more than 76.8% and 37.3% in the gas and tar phases, respectively. The total concentration and the international total equivalent (I-TEQ) value of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans (PCDD/Fs) were significantly higher under the incineration condition than pyrolysis and gasification conditions. Adding CaO could reduce the total concentration and the I-TEQ value of PCDD/Fs by more than 43.4% and 36.7%, respectively. The reduction effect on PCDD/Fs was more significant in the gaseous phase and the tar phase than the solid phase. CD was more effective than CaO at reducing the chlorinated contaminants, including hydrogen chloride, Cl in the tar phase, and PCDD/Fs. Thus, adding Ca-based sorbents in the furnace during MSW pyrolysis and gasification can effectively reduce PCDD/Fs generation. Based on the experimental results, the mechanism of Ca-based sorbents on the high-temperature homogeneous reaction of PCDD/Fs formation was analysed.

The Effect of Adjusting Sinter Raw Mix on Dioxins from Iron Ore Co-Sintering with Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash

Abstract:The inhibition effect of calcined lime (CaO) and limestone (CaCO3) on the formation of dioxins during iron ore co-sintering with fly ash was investigated in a sinter pot in the present work. Experimental results indicated that international total toxicity equivalent concentration of dioxins decreased from 1.4335 to 0.2922, 0.1048, 0.4562, and 0.3098 ng I-TEQ Nm−3 under four different experimental conditions. It can be concluded that 5 wt.% calcined lime with 3 wt.% limestone is the optimal addition to reduce the concentration of dioxins in flue gas, with 92.70% inhibition efficiency. Effects on dioxin distribution was also analyzed. The distribution proportion of low-chlorinated dioxins was found to increase, while that of high-chlorinated dioxins decreased, except for octachlorianted dibenzo-p-dioxins (OCDD). The reason is that the consumption of HCl not only inhibits the de novo synthesis, but also dramatically promotes the condensation and dechlorination to produce more tetrachlorianted dibenzo-p-dioxins and octachlorianted dibenzo-p-dioxins through precursors. Finally, condensation, dichlorination, and inhibition mechanisms of dioxins during co-sintering with municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash are proposed.

Abstract:The control of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) from the flue gas in hazardous waste incinerators (HWIs) is an intractable problem. To figure out the formation mechanism of PCDD/Fs and reduce the emission, a field study was carried out in a full-scale HWI. Ca(OH)2 & (NH4)H2PO4 or CH4N2S & (NH4)H2PO4 were injected into the quench tower, and the detailed inhibition effect on PCDD/Fs formation by the inhibitors coupled with quench tower was studied. Gas and ash samples were collected to analyze PCDD/Fs. XPS, EDS characterization and Principal component analysis were adopted to further analyze the de novo and precursors synthesis. The PCDD/Fs emissions reduced from 0.135 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 to 0.062 or 0.025 ng I-TEQ/Nm3 after the injection of Ca(OH)2 & (NH4)H2PO4 or CH4N2S & (NH4)H2PO4, respectively. The quench tower was found mainly hindering de novo synthesis by reducing reaction time. CP-route was the dominant formation pathway of PCDD/Fs in quench tower ash. Ca(OH)2 & (NH4)H2PO4 effectively inhibit precursors synthesis and reduce proportions of organic chlorine from 4.11% to 2.86%. CH4N2S & (NH4)H2PO4 show good control effects on both de novo and precursors synthesis by reducing chlorine content and inhibiting metal-catalysts. Sulfur-containing inhibitors can cooperate well with the quench tower to inhibit PCDD/Fs formation and will be effective to reduce dioxins formation in high chlorine flue gas. The results pave the way for further industrial application of inhibition to reduce PCDD/Fs emissions in the HWIs flue gas.

Abstract:Background: Chlorine substitution has been considered as one of the key steps of polychlorinated dibenzodioxin/furan (PCDD/Fs) generation. The introduction of oxygen carriers (OCs), especially in chemical looping combustion (CLC), provides the platform of directed regulation for the chlorine substitution process. Methods: Density functional theory (DFT) calculations with code VASP 5.4 were employed to investigate the free energy of PCDD/Fs adsorption on different surfaces. 12378-PCDD, which is the product of a one-step chlorine substitution for toxic 2378-PCDD, has been selected as the calculation case, and the regulation mechanisms on the inter-isomeric conversion of 12378-PCDD were identified by calculating the energy barrier and action angle. Results: It was found that the chlorine substitution of 12378-PCDD, particularly in 4# position, 9# position, and 6# position, emerged a tendency to increase the difficulty in turn, which conforms to the principle of distal preference. Besides, the influence from CaO adsorption on the crystalline surface of the iron-based oxygen carrier (OC) has been analyzed and it was verified that CaO adsorption can significantly increase the energy barrier for the chlorine substitution of 12378-PCDD. Meanwhile, the action angle was proposed to evaluate the parameters of adsorption process, and the adsorption of CaO can not only change the action angle between the 12378-PCDD molecule and the lattice surface, but also can modulate the energy barrier order of chlorine substitution among PCDD isomers. In addition, the loading component modulation was carried out to further confirm the feasibility of modulating the chloride substitution pathway, which proved the influence degree of loading component. And accordingly, the stretching analysis of the inactive component provides a theoretical basis for the subsequent study of the directional regulation of the PCDDs isomer generation pathway. Finally, the chlorine substitution rules and directed regulation mechanisms of PCDD/Fs isomers were obtained, which provides a modification direction for the structural components of OCs.
Inhibition on de novo synthesis of PCDD/Fs by an N-P-containing compound: Carbon gasification and kinetics

Abstract:In this study, an N-P-containing compound (ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP)) and an auxiliary material (CaO) were used to inhibit the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). ADP significantly inhibited the formation of PCDD/Fs by the inhibition efficiencies of 98.45% for total concentration and 96.55% for toxic concentration. ADP was the best single inhibitor on toxic PCDFs (96.55%), and the inhibition on toxic PCDDs improved after ADP (90.91%) coupled with CaO (95.69%). In the temperature range of 300-350 degrees C, ADP inhibited the carbon gasification by reducing CO2 and CO (400%-500% (20 K/min)), which could attributed to the formation of Cu2P2O7 and copper nitrides from the Cu deactivation by P and N, respectively. However, the synergy of ADP and CaO decreased CO and CO2 by 200%-300% (20 K/min), because CaO could promote carbon gasification. In addition, the apparent activation energy (Ea) increased from 78.50 kJ/mol to 102.04 kJ/mol with the addition of ADP but decreased to 73.92 kJ/mol after adding ADP and CaO. These results revealed that one inhibition route of de novo synthesis was the inhibition of carbon gasification by ADP, while CaO mainly inhibited de novo synthesis via the consumption of HCl and Cl2. Furthermore, a reaction mechanism function in model fly ash was built as f(alpha) = 2 alpha 1/2/3, which included carbon gasification and de novo synthesis. The results pave the way for further research on the inhibition kinetics of PCDD/F and development of other inhibitors.

Abstract:Waste incineration is a preferred method in China to dispose the municipal solid waste, but controlling the production of highly toxic polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans effectively during incineration is both challenging and imperative. In this study, the suppression of PCDD/Fs by various phosphorus-containing compounds was explored, and the mechanisms responsible for the inhibition were studied in detail. The experiments took place in a lab-scale vertical tubular reactor at 350 °C under a simulated flue gas (12 vol% O2 in N2 flow), and both the off-gases and residues were collected for PCDD/Fs analysis. The scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to characterize the reaction residues. The experimental results revealed that NH4H2PO4 and (NH4)2·HPO4 showed the highest inhibitory effect (57.2% and 57.3%, respectively) on the PCDD/Fs formation, followed by CaHPO4 with inhibition efficiency of 39.1%. In contrast, KH2PO4 and K2HPO4 barely inhibited the generation of the PCDD/Fs. The inhibitory effect of NH4H2PO4 and (NH4)2·HPO4 was similar to that of nitrogen-based inhibitors. At the same time, it was proven that the inhibitory activity of CaHPO4 might be due to the reaction of it with Cu2+ forming stable compounds.

Abstract:Co-combustion of sewage sludge (SS) and coal was developed rapidly in China, however, less attention was paid to the formation characteristics of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and the influence factors, such as the catalytic metals (CuCl2, FeCl3, ZnCl2, CuO, Fe2O3, and ZnO), sources of carbon and chlorine. During the co-combustion of SS ( 2.5 wt.%) and coal (97.5 wt.%), the formation content of PCDD/Fs was 0.51 ng g(-1) and 0.01 ng I-TEQ g(-1). By adding metal chlorides (2.0 wt.% CuCl2, FeCl3, and ZnCl2), the formation contents of PCDD/Fs were increased significantly to 148.99, 67.38, and 53.63 ng g-1 (i.e., 2.10, 1.09, and 1.34 ng I-TEQ g(-1)), respectively, while the metal oxides (2.0 wt.% CuO, Fe2O3, and ZnO) only increased the PCDD/F contents to 1.27, 0.76, and 0.57 ng g-1 (0.03, 0.01, and 0.02 ng I-TEQ g(-1)), respectively. That is, the promotion effect of different metal additives on PCDD/F formation followed a sequence of CuCl2 (292x) > FeCl3 (132x) > ZnCl2 (105x) >> CuO (2.5x) > Fe2O3 (1.5x) > ZnO (1.1x), wherein the metal chlorides showed 2 orders of magnitude higher promotion than that of metal oxides. The proportion of highly chlorinated PCDD/Fs was further increased after adding metal chlorides, while the additional metal oxides decreased it. The de novo synthesis was revealed as the major formation pathway of PCDD/Fs except for adding ZnO. The CuCl2 and FeCl3 can also enhance the chlorination routes to generate PCDD/Fs. Only ZnO showed the promotion effect on the CP-route. The chlorine source was an essential limiting factor for generating PCDD/Fs, and the chlorine from metal chlorides was the preference source compared with that contained in SS and coal. The results have important reference value for controlling PCDD/Fs formation in the co-combustion process of SS and coal.
