Abstract:Contaminant transport and flow distribution are very important during an elevator ride, as the reduced social distancing may increase the infection rate of airborne diseases such as COVID‐19. Studying the airflow and contaminant concentration in an elevator is not straightforward because the flow pattern inside an elevator changes dramatically with passenger movement and frequent door opening. Since very little experimental data were available for elevators, this investigation validated the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based on the RNG k–∈ turbulence model to predict airflow and contaminant transport in a scaled, empty airliner cabin with a moving passenger. The movement of the passenger in the cabin created a dynamic airflow and transient contaminant dispersion that were similar to those in an elevator. The computed results agreed reasonably well with the experimental data for the cabin. The validated CFD program was then used to calculate the distributions of air velocity, air temperature, and particle concentration during an elevator ride with an index patient. The CFD results showed that the airflow pattern in the elevator was very complex due to the downward air supply from the ceiling and upward thermal plumes generated by passengers. This investigation studied different respiratory activities of the index patient, that is, breathing only, breathing, and coughing with and without a mask, and talking. The results indicated that the risk of infection was generally low because of the short duration of the elevator ride. If the index patient talked in the elevator, two passengers in the closest proximity to distance would be infected.

Abstract:People in elevators are at risk of respiratory infection because the elevator cabin is crowded and has poor ventilation. The exhaled particles may be inhaled by the susceptible person, deposited on the surface and suspended in the elevator, which can result in direct and indirect transmission. However, whether the air vent designs adopted in the elevator can effectively reduce the transmission risk of respiratory particles remains unknown. In this study, the dispersion of particles under four common ventilation strategies used in the commercial elevator was investigated by proven computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The flow field was simulated with the RNG k-ξ turbulence model and the Lagrangian method was adopted to track particle trajectories. The effects of air vent layout and airflow rate on particle transmission were analyzed. We found that more than 50% of exhaled particles (average value) were suspended in the cabin and difficult to discharge under the investigated ventilation strategies. The deposited fraction of particles on the susceptible person reached up to 39.14% for infiltration ventilation, which led to a high risk of contact infection. Increasing the ventilation rate could not significantly reduce the inhalation proportion of particles due to the poor airflow distribution inside the elevator. A more proper ventilation strategy should be explored for the elevator to control transmission risk.

Abstract:People in crowded and poorly ventilated elevators are at risk of respiratory infection. However, due to the short duration of the elevator ride, the transmission of respiratory diseases in elevators does not get enough attention. To evaluate the infection risk, this study investigated the airborne transmission of respiratory diseases in the hospital elevator by comparison to the conference room. A validated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was adopted to simulate airflow, temperature and tracer gas dispersion in the elevator and conference room. We used Wells-Riley model to evaluate the infection probability of the susceptible persons. In addition, the influences of source patient posture and ventilation strategy on the transmission of tracer gas were analyzed. The results showed that the infection probability in the elevator with 5 min (average 2.70%) was higher than that in the conference room with 50 min (average 1.77%). The effects of source patient posture and ventilation strategy on the infection probability in the elevator were more significant than those in the conference room. Local air circulation could gather the tracer gas inside a confined space in the elevator and led to a high infection probability. The infection risk of respiratory diseases in the elevator was non-negligible.

Abstract:Airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via virus-laden aerosols in enclosed spaces poses a significant concern. Elevators, commonly utilized enclosed spaces in modern tall buildings, present a challenge as the impact of varying heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems on virus transmission within these cabins remains unclear. In this study, we employ computational modeling to examine aerosol transmission within an elevator cabin outfitted with diverse HVAC systems. Using a transport equation, we model aerosol concentration and assess infection risk distribution across passengers' breathing zones. We calculate particle removal efficiency for each HVAC design and introduce a suppression effect criterion to evaluate the effectiveness of the HVAC systems. Our findings reveal that mixing ventilation, featuring both inlet and outlet at the ceiling, proves most efficient in reducing particle spread, achieving a maximum removal efficiency of 79.40% during the exposure time. Conversely, the stratum ventilation model attains a mere removal efficiency of 3.97%. These results underscore the importance of careful HVAC system selection in mitigating the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission within elevator cabins.

Abstract:Aerosol transmission is now well-established as a route in the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Factors influencing the transport of virus-laden particles in an elevator cabin are investigated computationally and include human respiratory events, locations of the infected person(s), and the ventilation system (ventilation mode, ventilation capacity, and vent schemes). "Breath," "cough," and "sneeze" are defined quantitatively by the fluid jet velocities and particle sizes. For natural ventilation, most particles exhaled by sneezing and coughing tend to deposit on surfaces quickly, but aerosol generated by breathing will remain suspended in the air longer. For forced ventilation, motions of particles under different ventilation capacities are compared. Larger particles otherwise deposited readily on solid surfaces may be slowed down by airflow. Air currents also accelerate the motions of smaller particles, facilitating the subsequent deposition of micrometer or sub-micrometer particles. Locations of the infected person(s) lead to different spreading scenarios due to the distinctive motions of the particles generated by the various respiratory events. Sneeze particles will likely contaminate the person in front of the infected passenger only. Cough particles will increase the risk of all the people around the injector. Breath particles tend to spread throughout the confined environment. An optimized vent scheme is introduced and can reduce particles suspended in the air by up to 80% as compared with commonly used schemes. The purification function of this vent model is robust to various positions of the infected passenger.

Abstract:As the world learns to live with COVID-19 and activities/business open up, the use of elevators becomes frequent. A pertinent question is what happens if someone accidentally coughs inside the elevator. In this work, a three dimensional Euler–Lagrangian model is used to understand the transmission and evaporation of micrometer-sized droplets in such cases. The effect of turbulence created by the air puff associated with coughing has been considered. Different possible scenarios varying in the presence of air ventilation within the elevator, number of persons coughing, direction of ejection of cough droplets, and ambient relative humidity and temperature have been postulated and simulated. The results obtained show that in the presence of proper ventilation within the elevator, most of the ejected cough droplets fall to the ground before impacting other persons traveling in the same elevator. However, in the absence of proper ventilation, the turbulence created during coughing transmits the particles all across the elevator enclosure.

Abstract:Respiratory droplets-which may contain disease spreading virus-exhaled during speaking, coughing, or sneezing are one of the significant causes for the spread of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The droplet dispersion depends on the surrounding air velocity, ambient temperature, and relative humidity. In a confined space like an elevator, the risk of transmission becomes higher when there is an infected person inside the elevator with other individuals. In this work, a numerical investigation is carried out in a three-dimensional domain resembling an elevator using OpenFoam. Three different modes of air ventilation, viz., quiescent, axial exhaust draft, and exhaust fan, have been considered to investigate the effect of ventilation on droplet transmission for two different climatic conditions (30 °C , 50% relative humidity and 10 °C , 90% relative humidity). The risk assessment is quantified using a risk factor based on the time-averaged droplet count present near the passenger's hand to head region (risky height zone). The risk factor drops from 40% in a quiescent scenario to 0% in an exhaust fan ventilation condition in a hot dry environment. In general, cold humid conditions are safer than hot dry conditions as the droplets settle down quickly below the risky height zone owing to their larger masses maintained by negligible evaporation. However, an exhaust fan renders the domain in a hot dry ambience completely safe (risk factor, 0%) in 5.5 s whereas it takes 7.48 s for a cold humid ambience.

Abstract:Physics of Fluids, Volume 34, Issue 7, July 2022. It is necessary to explore the effects of airflow in moving elevator cars on the diffusion of droplet nuclei and evaluate inhalation and touching risks due to the elevator car being a place where dangerous respiratory diseases can spread. A realizable k–ε turbulence model and discrete phase model were applied with gas–solid multiphase modeling principles to simulate the diffusion of droplet nuclei generated by coughs in a moving elevator. Four cases are discussed with differences in the elevator motion direction and air supply system. The results show that the elevator movement causes the airflow direction in respiratory regions to change by more than 30°, which is more evident in the absence of air supply. Under the combined effects of the airflow supply and the thermal plume, the high-temperature zone became a gathering point for droplet nuclei. The upward elevator movement increases the inhalation risk of a passenger who stands farther from an index patient and has the highest inhalation risk about 4.4 × 10−19. The downward movement increases the duration to about 40 s, for which that passenger remains at the highest risk. The area in front of the patient is the highest touching risk area, especially for downward motion. In addition, the button area is a high-risk area for touching because about 4% of cough droplet nuclei are deposited there. This may spread viable viruses if passengers touch the buttons, even if the coughing person is no longer in the elevator. Thus, elevator cars need to be regularly disinfected, especially the button area.

Abstract:The risks of disease transmission due to these droplets are significantly high in confined public spaces like elevators. A numerical analysis using OpenFOAM has been performed in this work to investigate the droplet dispersion routes in an enclosed environment resembling an elevator. The effect of two scenarios on droplet dispersal, namely the quiescent and the fan-driven ventilation, both subjected to various climatic conditions (of temperature and humidity) ranging from cold humid (15 degree C, 70 percent relative humidity) to hot dry (30 degree C, 30 percent relative humidity and 30 degree C, 50 percent relative humidity) and hot humid (30 degree C, 70 percent relative humidity) have been studied. A risk factor derived from a dose response model based on the time averaged pathogen quantity present around the passengers mouth is used to quantify the risk of infection through airborne mode. It is found that the hot, dry quiescent scenario poses the greatest threat of infection (spatio averaged risk factor 42 percent), whereas the cold humid condition poses the least risk of infection (spatio averaged risk factor 30 percent. The implementation of Fan ventilation at low RPM increases the risk as compared to a quiescent scenario, however with the increase in speed the risk decreases significantly. The Fan ventilation scenario with 1100 RPM (having a spatio averaged risk factor of 10 percent) decreases the risk of infection by 67 percent in a hot, dry climatic condition as compared to a quiescent scenario. However, there is no significant reduction in risk beyond a certain Fan speed, 1100 RPM. The deposition potential of aerosolized droplets in various parts of the respiratory tract namely the Extrathoracic and the Alveolar and Bronchial regions has been analyzed thoroughly because of the concomitant repercussions of infection in various depths of the respiratory region.

Abstract:Respiratory droplets exhaled during speaking, coughing or sneezing have been responsible for the spread of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The droplet dynamics depend on the surrounding air velocity, temperature and relative humidity. Droplets evaporate to form aerosols which contain the disease spreading virus. In a confined space like an elevator, the risk of transmission becomes higher when there is an infected person inside the elevator with other individuals. In this work, a numerical study is carried out in a 3D domain resembling an elevator using OpenFoam. Different modes of air circulation are considered inside the elevator and the impact of these air circulations on droplet dynamics is investigated. The scenario of the opening of elevator door and the passenger leaving the elevator has also been considered in order to simulate a real life condition. A pedantic analysis of certain risk assessment factors and remedial measures to be adopted has been performed which include the number of aerosols present in the zone of 0.8 to 1.8 m, the radial spread of the suspended droplets around the mouth of the infected person. From these factors, the safe condition can be understood. The time period up to which the elevator will be risk prone has also been investigated in case the person coughs just before leaving the elevator. After conducting these studies, the quiescent environment has been found out to be the most dangerous whereas ventilation with an exhaust fan is the safest.

Abstract:This study employs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to evaluate the risk of airborne transmission of COVID-19 in low-ceiling rooms, such as elevator cabins, under mechanical displacement ventilation. The simulations take into account the effects of the human body's thermal environment and respiratory jet dynamics on the transmission of pathogens. The results of the study are used to propose a potential mitigation strategy based on ventilation thermal control to reduce the risk of airborne transmission in these types of enclosed indoor spaces. Our findings demonstrate that as the ventilation rate (Qv) increases, the efficiency of removing airborne particles (Ep) initially increases rapidly, reaches a plateau (Ep,c) at a critical ventilation rate (Qc), and subsequently increases at a slower rate beyond Qc. The Qc for low-ceiling rooms is lower compared to high-ceiling rooms due to the increased interaction between the thermal plume generated by the occupants or infectors and the ventilation. Further analysis of the flow and temperature fields reveals that Ep is closely linked to the thermal stratification fields, as characterized by the thermal interface height, the height of the temperature isosurface, and temperature gradient. The simulations also indicate that the location of infector relative to ventilation inlet/outlet affects Qc and Ep,c with higher Qc and lower Ep,c observed when infector is in a corner due to potential formation of a local hot spot of high infection risk when infector is near the ventilation inlet. In conclusion, based on the simulations, we propose a ventilation thermal control strategy, by increasing the ventilation temperature, to reduce the risk of airborne transmission in low-ceiling rooms. Our findings indicate that the thermal environment plays a critical role in the transmission of airborne diseases confined spaces.

Abstract:Elevators facilitate people's movement in daily life. The confined space with high population density in elevators, however, assists the transmission of infectious diseases. To study disease transmission under various transit and boarding-period scenarios, this study used a full-scale elevator mockup with a connected lobby area. This investigation measured both static and dynamic distributions of air velocity/temperature and contaminant concentration. The static experiment involved the closed elevator cabin with mixed ventilation, while the dynamic measurements were conducted in the elevator with the door open to the adjacent lobby area when a passenger exited the elevator. The dynamic experiment showed that high-frequency instruments and better background airflow design could increase the data quality. The experimental data was then used to validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. This study compared the average and individual experimental data to minimize the uncertainties caused by the initial conditions and instrument limitations. The simulation results revealed that an in-transit elevator cabin is characterized by relatively uniform distributions of air temperature and contaminant concentration. The airflow in the dynamic case was greatly affected by the wake generated by passenger movement. This wake effect was short in duration, but it drew contaminants farther along the direction of movement.

Abstract:Abstract Ventilation might play an important role in airborne transmission. By using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, ventilation modes, ventilation rates, and infection source’s face direction were considered in a multi-person indoor environment (10 m*10 m*3 m). The airflow patterns, virus concentration distribution, and infection probability were studied. The results showed that the virus concentration was lower with displacement ventilation (DV, lower in, upper out) than mixing ventilation (MV, top-centre in, upper out) or natural ventilation (NV, upper in, upper out). In 2 air changes per hour (ACH), the infection risk of susceptible persons in MV and NV might be about 2.43-fold and 1.30-fold more than that in DV. Increased ventilation usually reduces viral concentrations and the risk of infection. For the height of breathing zones, the average virus concentration at 12ACH was 49.78%-78.72% lower than that at 2ACH. For susceptible persons at a distance of about 2.8-4.2 m to a COVID-19 infector with 30 min exposure time, the long-range airborne infection probability might be 11.53% (±5.86) (2ACH), 4.96% (±1.82%) (6ACH), and 2.96% (±1.91%) (12ACH).

Abstract:According to the World Health Organization (https://covid19.who.int/), more than 651 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and more than 6.6 million of them have died. COVID-19 has spread to almost every country in the world because of air travel. Cases of COVID-19 transmission from an index patient to fellow passengers in commercial airplanes have been widely reported. This investigation used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to simulate airflow and COVID-19 virus (SARS-CoV-2) transport in a variety of airliner cabins. The cabins studied were economy-class with 2-2, 3-3, 2-3-2, and 3-3-3 seat configurations, respectively. The CFD results were validated by using experimental data from a seven-row cabin mockup with a 3-3 seat configuration. This study used the Wells-Riley model to estimate the probability of infection with SARS-CoV-2. The results show that CFD can predict airflow and virus transmission with acceptable accuracy. With an assumed flight time of 4 h, the infection probability was almost the same among the different cabins, except that the 3-3-3 configuration had a lower risk because of its airflow pattern. Flying time was the most important parameter for causing the infection, while cabin type also played a role. Without mask wearing by the passengers and the index patient, the infection probability could be 8% for a 10-h, long-haul flight, such as a twin-aisle air cabin with 3-3-3 seat configuration.

Abstract:The impact of mechanical ventilation on airborne diseases is not completely known. The recent pandemic of COVID-19 clearly showed that additional investigations are necessary. The use of computational tools is an advantage that needs to be included in the study of designing safe places. The current study focused on a hospital lift where two subjects were included: a healthy passenger and an infected one. The elevator was modelled with a fan placed on the middle of the ceiling and racks for supplying air at the bottom of the lateral wall. Three ventilation strategies were evaluated: a without ventilation case, an upwards-blowing exhausting fan case and a downwards-blowing fan case. Five seconds after the elevator journey began, the infected person coughed. For the risk assessment, the CO 2 concentration, droplet removal performance and dispersion were examined and compared among the three cases. The results revealed some discrepancies in the selection of an optimal ventilation strategy. Depending on the evaluated parameter, downward-ventilation fan or no ventilation strategy could be the most appropriate approach.

Abstract:COVID-19 has already claimed over 7 million lives and has infected over 775 million people globally [1]. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, spreads primarily through droplets from infected people's airways, rendering Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems critical in controlling infection risk levels in the indoor environment. To understand the dynamics of exhaled droplets and aerosols and the percentage of particles that are inhaled, escaped, recirculated, or trapped on different surfaces for a variety of environmental settings, we have presented our findings from the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling to investigate the impact of changing HVAC parameters in this paper. When combined with the spatial and temporal distribution of droplets, this method can be used to assess the potential risk and strengthen resilience. This finding demonstrates the viability and usefulness of CFD for modeling the distribution and dynamics of droplets and aerosols in confined environments. Our study demonstrates that raising the Air Change per Hour (ACH) from 2 to 8 reduces the risk of particle inhalation by nearly 70 %. Additionally, limiting the amount of air recirculation or increasing the amount of fresh air helps to reduce the number of airborne particles in an indoor space. To reduce the potential for respiratory droplet-related transmission and to provide relevant recommendations to the appropriate authority, the same computational approach could be applied to a wide range of ventilated indoor environments such as public buses, restaurants, exhibitions, and theaters.

Abstract:COVID-19 is transmitted through droplets or aerosols containing the virus, the very small particles exhaled by infected people or exposure to items infected with the virus. These droplets, aerosols and particles may be inhaled by others, or fall into their eyes, mouth and nose. In some cases, they may contaminate the contact surface. It is most likely to be infected if they are less than 1 m away from the infected person. To evaluate the effects of different air conditioning systems on the spread of human exhaled pollutants, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to study the movement and diffusion of exhaled air from two rows of 12 sitting adults in a hospital's closed transfusion room. In this paper, a closed transfusion room with 12 human models was established firstly, and the mathematical model verified by experimental test results was used to study the propagation of viral aerosol particles in the enclosed space under different air conditioning systems. The result showed that when the transverse strong air flow is generated in the room, the concentration distribution of virus particles will show a roll like distribution and the personnel inside the roll will cause new infection. The air flow generated by the air conditioning system will affect the dispersion of droplets in the air. Evaluating and guiding the air flow to avoid blowing air from one person to another may reduce the risk.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic broke out in early 2020, and the infection rate of COVID-19 variants is considerably higher than that of the original virus. The pandemic is still spreading globally. In June 2021, two families living on different floors of a building in Fongshan, Kaohsiung, were simultaneously infected with COVID-19. Investigation results suggested that an elevator in buildings was the most likely place where the virus transmission occurred. Building elevators are a necessary vertical transportation facility for residents or workers in high-rise buildings, and people touch elevator buttons while operating elevators. When a passenger carrying the virus touches elevator buttons, subsequent passengers may be easily infected if they touch those buttons and then touch their mouth, eyes, or nose by accident before sanitizing or washing their hands. In this study, we developed a contact-free elevator ride system by applying smart speech recognition, contact-free perceptual buttons, gesture recognition sensors, and a web page browser activated by quick response codes to operate an elevator. This system reduces the risk of virus infection caused by contact during an elevator ride, effectively enhancing pandemic prevention and protecting people’s health.
