Abstract:This paper presents a bio-inspired concept for an autonomous centimeter-scale robot for locomotion on un-even terrains. First, we discuss why legged locomotion can be more effective because of its high efficiency, low energy consumption and environmentally friendly operation. The choice of the optimal gait for the mini-robot is discussed according to its size. A small legged robot with some jumping mechanism can be efficient on compliant terrains, and this additional jumping function allows the robot to overcome obstacles several times higher than itself in a rough terrain. After that, a jumping robot named Grillo, our first prototype, is introduced. We also describe the electronic part of this robot, mainly focusing on control techniques exploited in the airborne phase.

Abstract:For quadruped robots with springy legs, a successful jump usually requires both suitable elastic parts and well-designed control algorithms. However, these two problems are mutually restricted and hard to solve at the same time. In this study, we attempt to solve the problem of controller design with the help of a robot without any elastic mounted parts, in which the untethered robot is made to jump on a trampoline. The differences between jumping on hard surfaces with springy legs and jumping on springy surfaces with rigid legs are briefly discussed. An intuitive control law is proposed to balance foot contact forces; in this manner, excessive pitch oscillation during hopping or bounding can be avoided. Hopping height is controlled by tuning the time delay of the leg stretch. Together with other motion generators based on kinematic law, the robot can perform translational and rotational movements while hopping or bounding on the trampoline. Experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control framework.
Drosophila Larvae-Inspired Soft Crawling Robot with Multi-Modal Locomotion and Versatile Applications

Abstract:Soft crawling robots have been widely studied and applied because of their excellent environmental adaptability and flexible movement. However, most existing soft crawling robots typically exhibit a single-motion mode and lack diverse capabilities. Inspired by Drosophila larvae, this paper proposes a compact soft crawling robot (weight, 13 g; length, 165 mm; diameter, 35 mm) with multimodal locomotion (forward, turning, rolling, and twisting). Each robot module uses 4 sets of high-power-density shape memory alloy actuators, endowing it with 4 degrees of motion freedom. We analyze the mechanical characteristics of the robot modules through experiments and simulation analysis. The plug-and-play modules can be quickly assembled to meet different motion and task requirements. The soft crawling robot can be remotely operated with an external controller, showcasing multimodal motion on various material surfaces. In a narrow maze, the robot demonstrates agile movement and effective maneuvering around obstacles. In addition, leveraging the inherent bistable characteristics of the robot modules, we used the robot modules as anchoring units and installed a microcamera on the robot’s head for pipeline detection. The robot completed the inspection in horizontal, vertical, curved, and branched pipelines, adjusted the camera view, and twisted a valve in the pipeline for the first time. Our research highlights the robot’s superior locomotion and application capabilities, providing an innovative strategy for the development of lightweight, compact, and multifunctional soft crawling robots.
Development of a Small-Sized Quadruped Robotic Rat Capable of Multimodal Motions

Abstract:Legged robots are very promising for use in real-world applications, but their operation in narrow spaces is still challenging. One solution for enhancing their environmental adaptability is to design a small-sized biomimetic robot capable of performing multiple motions. By capturing a decent representation of an actual rat (rattus norvegicus), we developed a small-sized quadruped robotic rat (SQuRo), which includes four limbs and one flexible spine. On the basis of the extracted key movement joints, SQuRo was subtly designed with a relatively elongated slim body (aspect ratio: 3.42) and smaller weight (220 g) compared with quadruped robots of the same scale. Accordingly, we propose a control framework for multimodal motion planning, and the appropriate control parameters were tuned through optimization with consideration to the stability and actuation limits. The results obtained through a series of experimental tests reveal that SQuRo achieves a superior motion performance compared with existing state-of-the-art small-sized quadruped robots. Remarkably, SQuRo has an extremely small turning radius (0.48 BL) and strong payload capacity (200 g), and it can recover from falls.

Abstract:Galloping cheetahs, climbing mountain goats, and load hauling horses all show desirable locomotion capability, which motivates the development of quadruped robots. Among various quadruped robots, hydraulically driven quadruped robots show great potential in unstructured environments due to their discrete landing positions and large payloads. As the most critical movement unit of a quadruped robot, the limb leg unit (LLU) directly affects movement speed and reliability, and requires a compact and lightweight design. Inspired by the dexterous skeleton-muscle systems of cheetahs and humans, this paper proposes a highly integrated bionic actuator system for a better dynamic performance of an LLU. We propose that a cylinder barrel with multiple element interfaces and internal smooth channels is realized using metal additive manufacturing, and hybrid lattice structures are introduced into the lightweight design of the piston rod. In addition, additive manufacturing and topology optimization are incorporated to reduce the redundant material of the structural parts of the LLU. The mechanical properties of the actuator system are verified by numerical simulation and experiments, and the power density of the actuators is far greater than that of cheetah muscle. The mass of the optimized LLU is reduced by 24.5%, and the optimized LLU shows better response time performance when given a step signal, and presents a good trajectory tracking ability with the increase in motion frequency.

Abstract:Robots need lightweight legs for agile locomotion, and intrinsic series elastic compliance has proven to be a major ingredient for energy-efficient locomotion and robust locomotion control. Animals' anatomy and locomotion capabilities emphasize the importance of that lightweight legs and integrated, compact, series elastically actuated for distal leg joints. But unlike robots, animals achieve series elastic actuation by their muscle-tendon units. So far no designs are available that feature all characteristics of a perfect distal legged locomotion actuator; a low-weight and low-inertia design, with high mechanical efficiency, no stick and sliding friction, low mechanical complexity, high-power output while being easy to mount. Ideally, such an actuator can be controlled directly and without mechanical cross-coupling, for example remotely. With this goal in mind, we propose a low-friction, lightweight Series ELastic Diaphragm distal Actuator (SELDA) which meets many, although not all, of the above requirements. We develop, implement, and characterize a bioinspired robot leg that features a SELDA-actuated foot segment. We compare two leg configurations controlled by a central pattern generator that both feature agile forward hopping. By tuning SELDA's activation timing, we effectively adjust the robot's hopping height by 11% and its forward velocity by 14%, even with comparatively low power injection to the distal joint.

Abstract:Jumping and hopping locomotion are efficient means of traversing unstructured rugged terrain with the former being the focus of roboticists. This focus has led to significant performance and understanding in jumping robots but with limited practical applications as they require significant time between jumps to store energy, thus relegating jumping to a secondary role in locomotion. Hopping locomotion, however, can preserve and transfer energy to subsequent hops without long energy storage periods. Therefore, hopping has the potential to be far more energy efficient and agile than jumping. However, to date, only a single untethered hopping robot exists with limited payload and hopping heights (< 1 meter). This is due to the added design and control complexity inherent in the requirements to input energy during dynamic locomotion and control the orientation of the system throughout the hopping cycle, resulting in low energy input and control torques; a redevelopment from basic principles is necessary to advance the capabilities of hopping robots. Here we report hopping robot design principles for efficient and robust systems with high energy input and control torques that are validated through analytical, simulation, and experimental results. The resulting robot (MultiMo-MHR) can hop nearly 4 meters (> 6 times the current state-of-the-art); and is only limited by the impact mechanics and not energy input. The results also directly contradict a recent work that concluded hopping with aerodynamic energy input would be less efficient than flight for hops greater than 0.4 meters.

Abstract:Abstract The click beetle can jump up with a hinge when it is on the dorsal side. This jumping mechanism is simple and suitable as an inspiration for designing a simple, small, and reliable hopping robot. We report a single-legged robot inspired by the jumping mechanism of click beetles. It is 85 mm high, 60 mm long, and 41 mm wide, and weighs about 49 g. The robot has good hopping performance that the hopping height is about 4 times – 4.3 times of its body height. It is capable for rescue missions that require to enter enclosed spaces through cracks and narrow channels. In addition, hopping dynamics of the robot is important to understand its jumping mechanism and improve the robot’s hopping performance. But existing dynamic study does not complete the analysis including all stages in the hopping which are pre-hopping, take-off, and air-flying. We propose the decomposition method to study dynamics of the three stages separately, and synthesize them with related parameters. The dynamic synthesis of multi-motion states in a hopping cycle of the single-legged hopping robot is implemented. The hopping performance and dynamic synthesis theory of the robot are verified by simulations and experiments. Our study helps lay the foundation for design and hopping control of simple hopping robot systems.

Abstract:In order to control the vertical hopping height of two degree-of-freedom articulated single-legged hopping robot, a hopping height control scheme based on the energy conservation in the course of hopping was proposed. The kinematic model of the legged hopping robot and the hybrid dynamic model on flight and stance phase according to the different constraint condition was established, and the ground contact model based on the impact collisions between end-effector and ground was analyzed. On the one hand when robot was controlled to hop higher, energy was imparted into the robot system by increasing the pre-compressed length of the virtual spring. On the other hand, when robot was controlled to hop lower, the redundant energy of the robot system was dissipated by the inelastic collisions when the end-effector touched down the ground. The control scheme is demonstrated by the simulation experiment of hopping height control implemented in MATLAB/Simulink. The robot's hopping height increases from 0.55 to 0.8 m and then decreases from 0.8 to 0.55 m with 0.05 m intervals. The phase plot shows that the dynamic hopping with different height approaches respective periodic and stable orbit. And the time domain hopping plot shows that the control scheme has fast dynamic response and nearly no steady-state error. The experiment result shows great efficiency of the control scheme proposed here.
Design Of A Mammal-Kike Hexapod Walking Robot

Abstract:This paper describes the design and control concepts of a mammal-like hexapod walking robot. It has a hexapod configuration and is driven by 12 digital servomotors which are controlled by main processor located on the main body. The novel mechanical design with 12 degrees of freedom is introduced as well as the hardware architecture of the control system. In this study, the alternative tripod gait is generated and realized by inverse kinematics method in the single-leg physical model with the foot trajectories planned. Dynamic calculation and simulation results demonstrate the validity of the design concept. The experiments prove that the robot could achieve the straight-line walking with good performance.
Insect-scale jumping robots enabled by a dynamic buckling cascade

Abstract:Millions of years of evolution have allowed animals to develop unusual locomotion capabilities. A striking example is the legless-jumping of click beetles and trap-jaw ants, which jump more than 10 times their body length. Their delicate musculoskeletal system amplifies their muscles' power. It is challenging to engineer insect-scale jumpers that use onboard actuators for both elastic energy storage and power amplification. Typical jumpers require a combination of at least two actuator mechanisms for elastic energy storage and jump triggering, leading to complex designs having many parts. Here, we report the new concept of dynamic buckling cascading, in which a single unidirectional actuation stroke drives an elastic beam through a sequence of energy-storing buckling modes automatically followed by spontaneous impulsive snapping at a critical triggering threshold. Integrating this cascade in a robot enables jumping with unidirectional muscles and power amplification (JUMPA). These JUMPA systems use a single lightweight mechanism for energy storage and release with a mass of 1.6 g and 2 cm length and jump up to 0.9 m, 40 times their body length. They jump repeatedly by reengaging the latch and using coiled artificial muscles to restore elastic energy. The robots reach their performance limits guided by theoretical analysis of snap-through and momentum exchange during ground collision. These jumpers reach the energy densities typical of the best macroscale jumping robots, while also matching the rapid escape times of jumping insects, thus demonstrating the path toward future applications including proximity sensing, inspection, and search and rescue.

Abstract:This paper presents a bio-inspired concept for an autonomous centimeter-scale robot for locomotion on un-even terrains with bionic legs. Our previous work, the jumping robot ldquoGRILLO Irdquo, is firstly introduced, as well as its limitations. For improving the performance of this prototype, we made biological observations on jumping insects by means of a high speed camera. It was found that the legs configuration let map muscle-like force into a constant force at feet-ground interface, which represents an optimum design for jumping. That gives us the bionic inspiration to redesign the legs that can reproduce the dynamic characteristics of insect jumping. Based on this idea, a new jumping robot prototype, GRILLO II, is then presented, as well as jumping details measured by the high speed camera and accelerometer.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the kangaroo, which has powerful legs capable of jumping and a soft and strong tail. To incorporate these unique structure into a robot for utilization, we propose a design method that takes into account both the feasibility as a robot and the kangaroo-mimetic structure. Based on the kangaroo's musculoskeletal structure, we determine the structure of the robot that enables it to jump by analyzing the muscle arrangement and prior verification in simulation. Also, to realize a tail capable of body support, we use an articulated, elastic structure as a tail. In order to achieve both softness and high power output, the robot is driven by a direct-drive, high-power wire-winding mechanism, and weight of legs and the tail is reduced by placing motors in the torso. The developed kangaroo robot can jump with its hind legs, moving its tail, and supporting its body using its hind legs and tail.

Abstract:Multidirectional jumping is commonly found in living creatures and desirable to be integrated into mobile robots for enhanced agility. Existing jumping robots mostly employ complex or cumbersome structures and modular designs to achieve multidirectional jumping. There is a lack of a simple, lightweight, and compact actuator design for multidirectional jumping robots. Here, we present a multidirectional jumping soft robot (MDJSR) driven by a biaxial electrohydraulic actuator (BEHA). The BEHA has a simple structure, i.e., a thin plastic frame-guided film pouch with four pairs of distributed electrodes and enclosed with a dielectric liquid. Inspired by gall midge larvae, the MDJSR exhibits two switchable locomotion strategies, including continuous nonenergy-storing jumping to move fast and energy-storing jumping to cross obstacles. Its multidirectional jumping capability was demonstrated in the navigation through a labyrinth with two ways of obstacle-crossing and obstacle-circumventing in different terrain environments. In addition, the robot can be deployed to detect unknown space and collect environmental factors. This work provides an enabling solution to miniature and lightweight multimodal jumping soft robots for various robotic tasks.

Abstract:In recent years, designing a soft robot that can jump continuously and quickly explore in a narrow space has been a hot research topic. With the continuous efforts of researchers, many types of actuators have been developed and successfully employed to actuate the rapid locomotion of soft robots. Although these mechanisms have enabled soft robots with excellent movement capabilities, they largely rely on external energy supply cables, which greatly limits their applications. Therefore, it is still a big challenge to realize the unconstrained movement of the soft robot and the flexible adjustment of the movement direction in a narrow space. Here, a wireless magnetically controlled soft jumping robot with single-leg is proposed, which can achieve continuous and rapid jumping motion. What's more interesting is that by changing the frequency and waveform of the control signal, this soft robot can easily switch between forward and backward motions. This motion direction switching function enables the magnetically controlled soft robot to return to the initial position without adjusting the direction when it completes the operation in a narrow pipe or takes the wrong path, which greatly improves the motion efficiency of the soft jumping robot and broadens its application field.

Abstract:A miniature amphibious robot actuated by dual rigid‐flexible hybrid modules is developed. It adopts the vibration‐driven mechanism for amphibious motion, with running motion by the friction locomotion mechanism and swimming motion by the vibration‐induced flow mechanism. The robot achieves a compact size with the integration of control system for no transmission mechanisms. Amphibious robots can undertake various tasks in terrestrial and aquatic environments for their superior environmental compatibility. However, the existing amphibious robots usually utilize multi‐locomotion systems with transmission mechanisms, leading to complex and bulky structures. Here, a miniature amphibious robot based on vibration‐driven locomotion mechanism is developed. The robot has two unique rigid‐flexible hybrid modules (RFH‐modules), in which a soft foot and a flexible fin are arranged on a rigid leg to conduct vibrations from an eccentric motor to the environment. Then, it can run on ground with the soft foot adopting the friction locomotion mechanism and swim on water with the flexible fin utilizing the vibration‐induced flow mechanism. The robot is untethered with a compact size of 75 × 95 × 21 mm3 and a small weight of 35 g owing to no transmission mechanism or joints. It realizes the maximum speed of 815 mm s–1 on ground and 171 mm s–1 on water. The robot, actuated by the RFH‐modules based on vibration‐driven locomotion mechanism, exhibits the merits of miniature structure and fast movements, indicating its great potential for applications in narrow amphibious environments.

A Torsion-Bending Antagonistic Bistable Actuator Enables Untethered Crawling and Swimming of Miniature Robots

Abstract:Miniature robots show great potential in exploring narrow and confined spaces to perform various tasks, but many applications are limited by the dependence of these robots on electrical or pneumatic tethers to power supplies outboard. Developing an onboard actuator that is small in size and powerful enough to carry all the components onboard is a major challenge to eliminate the need for a tether. Bistability can trigger a dramatic energy release during switching between the 2 stable states, thus providing a promising way to overcome the intrinsic limitation of insufficient power of small actuators. In this work, the antagonistic action between torsional deflection and bending deflection in a lamina emergent torsional joint is utilized to achieve bistability, yielding a buckling-free bistable design. The unique configuration of this bistable design enables integrating of a single bending electroactive artificial muscle in the structure to form a compact, self-switching bistable actuator. A low-voltage ionic polymer–metal composites artificial muscle is employed, yielding a bistable actuator capable of generating an instantaneous angular velocity exceeding 300 °/s by a 3.75-V voltage. Two untethered robotic demonstrations using the bistable actuator are presented, including a crawling robot (gross weight of 2.7 g, including actuator, battery, and on-board circuit) that can generate a maximum instantaneous velocity of 40 mm/s and a swimming robot equipped with a pair of origami-inspired paddles that swims breaststroke. The low-voltage bistable actuator shows potential for achieving autonomous motion of various fully untethered miniature robots.

Explosive Legged Robotic Hopping: Energy Accumulation and Power Amplification via Pneumatic Augmentation

Abstract:We present a novel pneumatic augmentation to traditional electric motor-actuated legged robot to increase intermittent power density to perform infrequent explosive hopping behaviors. The pneumatic system is composed of a pneumatic pump, a tank, and a pneumatic actuator. The tank is charged up by the pump during regular hopping motion that is created by the electric motors. At any time after reaching a desired air pressure in the tank, a solenoid valve is utilized to rapidly release the air pressure to the pneumatic actuator (piston) which is used in conjunction with the electric motors to perform explosive hopping, increasing maximum hopping height for one or subsequent cycles. We show that, on a custom-designed one-legged hopping robot, without any additional power source and with this novel pneumatic augmentation system, their associated system identification and optimal control, the robot is able to realize highly explosive hopping with power amplification per cycle by a factor of approximately 5.4 times the power of electric motor actuation alone.

Abstract:This paper presents a bio-inspired design of a jumping mini robot including the theoretical analysis on jumping dynamics based on a simplified biological model, the dynamically optimized saltatorial leg design, the overall design of the jumping robot prototype and, as a part of the bio-mimetic research, and the measuring and comparing of the jumping characteristics between the robot and animal. The artificial saltatorial leg is designed to imitate the characteristics of a real jumping insect, kinematically and dynamically, and proposed to reduce the contact force at tarsus–ground interface during jumping acceleration thus optimizes the jumping motion by minimizing the risk of both leg ruptures and tarsus slippage. Then by means of high speed camera experiment, the jumping characteristics of the theoretical jumping model, the jumping insect leafhopper and the robot are compared so as to show the dynamic similarity and optimization results among them. The final energy integrated jumping robot prototype is able to accomplish a movement of continuous jumping, of which a single jumping reaches 100mm high and 200mm long, about twice and four times of its body length respectively.

Abstract:A small power biped robot is designed by the load sharing method of walking gait. Walking can be classified into one-foot and two-foot standing during the common speed smooth walking. In two-foot standing, the weight of robot can be distributed to all joints. However, in one-foot standing, it is burdened to one foot, especially to ankle joint. So bigger actuator or even the passive joint is considered at the ankle joint; but bigger actuator increases the weight of robot and passive joint does not control ankle. When the small power actuator is used at all joints, ankle joint is sometimes overloaded during walking and this makes walking impossible. This problem is solved using the appropriate walking gait, that is, it depresses or distributes the driving power of the ankle joint when the load is applied to the ankle, and drives the ankle joint before the load is applied. By this method, the small power biped robot can be implemented without overloading the ankle joint. Experiments are conducted to prove the proposed method.
