Abstract:Treatment of eutrophication and algal blooms in large shallow lakes has been constrained by the endogenetic release of nutrients from sediment resuspension despite the wellcontrolled input of nutrients from surrounding land in Taihu Lake, China. In this study, we propose a method to simplify regionally empirical algorithms for total suspended matter (CTSM), chlorophyll-a (CChl-a), and phosphorus concentration (Cp) for the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) for Taihu Lake. The results show that the GOCI-derived CTSM, CChl-a, and Cp match well with the in situ measured data. Based on the validated synchronous and timely observation data (CTSM, CChl-a and Cp) from GOCI level-1b data, the interaction of phosphorus with algae and suspended sediment were analyzed from August 6 to August 9, 2013. The results indicate that phosphorus released from sediment resuspension is significant in Taihu Lake, with a high spatial-temporal variation. The effect of the restriction of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) on algal growth varied temporally and spatially with the hydrodynamic characteristics of the lake. In most cases, restricted phosphorus in the lake is the primary reason for the algal growth, especially in open regions such as Center Lake (CL), Northwestern Lake (NWL), and Southwestern Lake (SWL). Both nitrogen and phosphorus are the restrictive factors to algal growth in Meiliang and Gonghu Bays. More attention should thus be focused on the endogenetic release of phosphorus in Taihu Lake when treating eutrophication and algal blooms in addition to controlling the input of nitrogen and phosphorus from surrounding land.

Abstract:The sources of particulate organic carbon (POC) determine its conversion, thereby playing an important role in the carbon cycle of lakes. Accurate estimation of the sources and dynamic characteristics of POC is important for understanding the migration and transformation of organic carbon. However, the synchronous observation of POC sources with large areas through remote sensing is still challenging because of the complex composition of POC and the optical conditions of inland lakes. In this study, a three-band (1/ Rrs (689)–1/ Rrs (717)) × Rrs (697)) empirical algorithm of POC sources was constructed based on remote sensing reflectance (Rrs(λ)) and the proportion of endogenous POC estimated from the field-measured stable isotope (δ13CPOC) values. The validation and calibration results of the three-band algorithm showed robust performance, with MAPE and RMSE of estimated values and measured values of 10% and 0.07, respectively. The three-band algorithm had good simulation results for the Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI), Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), and Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) spectra. The POC sources estimated by the three-band algorithm suggest that the endogenous POC of Taihu Lake in August showed a decreasing trend from 2006 to 2019. The variation in terrestrial POC was slow and stable for both annual and monthly variations. The analysis of POC sources with total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), water temperature, and wind speed indicated that terrestrial POC was closely related to wind speed (r = 0.33, P < 0.001), while endogenous POC was significantly associated with TP (r = 0.6, P < 0.001), TN (r = 0.56, P < 0.001), and water temperature (r = 0.49, P < 0.001). The use of remote sensing algorithms to evaluate POC from different sources is convenient and effective; furthermore, it helps to better understand the carbon cycle in lacustrine ecosystems.

Abstract:Chemical oxygen demand concentration (C COD ) is widely used to indicate the degree of organic pollution of lakes, reservoirs and rivers. Mastering the spatiotemporal distribution of C COD is imperative for understanding the variation mechanism and controlling of organic pollution in water. In this study, a hybrid approach suitable for Sentinel 3A/Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) data was developed to estimate C COD in inland optically complex waters embedding the interaction between C COD and the absorption coefficients of optically active constituents (OACs). Based on in-situ sampling in different waters, the independent validations of the proposed model performed satisfactorily in Lake Taihu (MAPE = 23.52 %, RMSE = 0.95 mg/L, and R 2 = 0.81), Lake Qiandaohu (MAPE = 21.63 %, RMSE = 0.50 mg/L and R 2 = 0.69), and Yangtze River (MAPE = 29.34 %, RMSE = 0.83 mg/L, and R 2 = 0.64). In addition, the approach not only showed significant superiority compared with previous algorithms, but also was suitable for other common satellite sensors equipped same or similar bands. The hybrid approach was applied to OLCI images to retrieve C COD of Lake Taihu from 2016 to 2020 and reveals substantial interannual and seasonal variations. The above results indicate that the proposed approach is effective and stable for studying spatiotemporal dynamic of C COD in optically complex waters, and that satellite-derived products can provide reliable information for lake water quality management.

Abstract:Remote sensing monitoring of particulate organic carbon (POC) concentration is essential for understanding phytoplankton productivity, carbon storage, and water quality in global lakes. Some algorithms have been proposed, but only for regional eutrophic lakes. Based on in-situ data ( N = 1269) in 49 lakes across China, we developed a blended POC algorithm by distinguishing Type-I and Type-II waters. Compared to Type-I, Type-II waters had higher reflectance peak around 560 nm (>0.0125 sr −1 ) and mean POC (4.65 ± 4.11 vs. 2.66 ± 3.37 mg/L). Furthermore, because POC was highly related to algal production ( r = 0.85), a three-band index ( R 2 = 0.65) and the phytoplankton fluorescence peak height ( R 2 = 0.63) were adopted to estimate POC in Type-I and Type-II waters, respectively. The novel algorithm got a mean absolute percent difference (MAPD) of 35.93 % and outperformed three state-of-the-art formulas with MAPD values of 40.56–76.42 %. Then, the novel algorithm was applied to OLCI/Sentinel-3 imagery, and we first obtained a national map of POC in 450 Chinese lakes (> 20 km 2 ), which presented an apparent spatial pattern of "low in the west and high in the east". In brief, water classification should be considered when remotely monitoring lake POC concentration over a large area. Moreover, a process-oriented method is required when calculating water column POC storage from satellite-derived POC concentrations in type-II waters. Our results contribute substantially to advancing the dynamic observation of the lake carbon cycle using satellite data.

Abstract:Particulate organic carbon (POC) plays a vital role in carbon cycling in aquatic ecosystems. A knowledge of POC source dynamics is important for a comprehensive understanding of many biogeochmeical processes in inland and coastal waters. Yet, determining POC sources from remote sensing have not been fully explored. Using bio-optical datasets from 10 cruises in Taihu Lake, Poyang Lake, Daya Bay and the Pearl River Estuary, an optical classification scheme was developed to detect the dominant source of POC from remote sensing, taking into consideration the absorbing feature of phytoplankton pigment in the near-infrared waveband. Following the approach of POC source identification, the study waters were distinguished into two classes, the algae-based origin and detritus-dominance source. POC sources were thus mapped with 2016–2019 VIIRS imagery data, which exhibited significant temporal variability and spatial heterogeneity for the four study waters across different eutrophic states. It was observed that Poyang Lake was mostly terrigenous in all the study years and phytoplankton-related source was dominated in Daya Bay. Taihu Lake showed heterogeneous conditions varying with time and space, whereas most water areas was contributed by the terrestrial origin. Specially, the Pearl River Estuary presented a typical pattern of POC sources dynamics, with an exogenous source in the north-west waters, while endogenous in the south-east open areas. By implication, the methodology of POC source determination in the present study, will be conveniently applied to the common water color satellites and effectively identify the POC origins in time and space in future, which allows for a better understanding the carbon cycling and biogeochemical processes in inland and coastal waters with different eutrophication conditions.

Abstract:The estimation of particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations from satellite images can provide crucial spatiotemporal continuous observation data for the carbon cycle and ecological environmental governance. Here, we developed a novel inversion algorithm for deriving POC in inland water based on remote sensing and geochemical isotopes, which is summarized as follows. First, we developed empirical relationships between the phytoplankton absorption coefficient and endogenous POC concentration (CendPOC) and between the nonalgal particulate absorption coefficient and terrestrial POC concentration (CterPOC). Second, based on the valid relationships, semianalytical retrieval models were established to estimate CendPOC and CterPOC. Third, the proportions of endogenous POC (RendPOC) and terrestrial POC (RterPOC) to the total POC concentration (CPOC) were derived using a three-band empirical model. Finally, CPOC was obtained by dividing CendPOC by RendPOC (RendPOC ≥ 0.5) or dividing CterPOC by RterPOC (RendPOC < 0.5). Validation with field data shows that our proposed algorithm can accurately derive CPOC (0–20 mg/L), with a root mean square deviation (RMSD), median bias (MB), median absolute percent difference (MAPD), and median ratio (MR) of 1.15 mg/L, −0.05 mg/L, 24%, and 0.98, respectively. Synchronous validation based on Sentinel-3/OLCI images confirmed the accuracy, with RMSD, MB, MAPD, and MR values of 0.41 mg/L, −0.16 mg/L, 28%, and 0.91, respectively. The algorithm was applied to ocean and land color sensor (OLCI) images to reveal the temporal and spatial variations in POC in Lake Taihu.

Abstract:Phytoplankton bloom in a shallow inland eutrophic lake (Taihu Lake) is characterized by significant spatial and temporal variation and a high concentration of chlorophyll-a (Cchl-a). The observation of the rapidly changing dynamic characteristics of algae is limited by the insufficient temporal resolution of satellite data. The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), launched by Korea, can provide high temporal resolution satellite data to observe the hourly dynamics of algae. In this study, a simple regional NIR-red two-band empirical algorithm of Cchl-a for GOCI is proposed for Taihu Lake. Study results show that the GOCI-derived Cchl-a matches the in situ measured values well. Based on this validated algorithm of Cchl-a, we obtained the hourly maps of Cchl-a from GOCI level-1b data during the period August 6 to August 9, 2013. The spatial variation of GOCI-derived Cchl-a also matches synchronous in situ measured values well, and the temporal variation of GOCI-derived Cchl-a coincides with buoy-measured Cchl-a. The northwestern area of the lake and Meiliang Bay are worst hit by phytoplankton bloom. GOCI-derived Cchl-a revealed a clear evidence of hourly spatial and temporal variations of Cchl-a in Taihu Lake. The vertical current plays an important role in the hourly scale of spatial and temporal variations in phytoplankton. The horizontal current is important to the distribution of phytoplankton over the long term, but spatially and temporally limited in the short term.
Increase in chlorophyll-a concentration in Lake Taihu from 1984 to 2021 based on Landsat observations

Abstract:Lake Taihu, located in a densely populated and highly industrialized area in eastern China, has experienced dramatic changes in water quality since the reform and opening-up in the 1980s. Landsat data can be used to trace water quality changes over approximately 40 years. However, chlorophyll-a (Chla) estimation, which characterizes the trophic status, has not been thoroughly explored (especially in turbid water using wide bandwidth Landsat) due to the interference of suspended particulate matter (SPM) to Chla. In this study, we used Landsat TM/OLI for turbid water Chla inversion and to analyze the spatiotemporal variation of Chla in Lake Taihu for 38 years and its influencing factors. An optical classification algorithm based on R rs (green)/R rs (red) was used to exclude highly turbid waters dominated by SPM; Chla was estimated only in waters with low SPM. We constructed an exponential estimation model based on R rs (NIR)/R rs (red), and verified the accuracy of the model using the measured Chla synchronized with satellite data. The model was applied to Landsat images to calculate the Chla concentration in Lake Taihu during 1984–2021, and its spatiotemporal distribution patterns were further analyzed. Spatially, the Chla concentrations in the western and northern regions of Lake Taihu were higher than those in other regions, probably because these areas are estuaries with large exogenous pollutant discharge and more nutrients are imported from exogenous sources. Chla showed an overall significant upward trend from 1984 to 2021 probably because of temperature rise, wind speed reduction, and nutrient increase. The results of the spatial and temporal variation of Chla and the influencing factors in this study provide supporting data for eutrophication monitoring and management in Lake Taihu. The proposed Chla estimation method can be extended to assess the spatial and temporal distribution of eutrophication in other inland waters with similar optical properties.

Abstract:Particulate organic carbon (POC) storage play an essential role in determining carbon sinks and water quality in shallow eutrophic lakes. Although satellite data have been adopted to observe surface POC content, the previous remote sensing results cannot indicate water column-integrated POC storage in shallow eutrophic lakes with vertically nonuniform POC profiles. Based on 272 in-situ POC profiles collected from 19 shallow eutrophic lakes in China's Yangtze-Huai Plain (YHP), this study developed a novel process-oriented method to derive water column-integrated POC storage from OLCI/Sentinel-3A satellite data. The method included three critical steps: remotely estimating surface POC contents, identifying POC profile types (uniform, exponential decay, or power decay) through a binary decision tree, and parameterizing POC profiles using surface POC concentrations. The developed algorithms showed a bias of -25.79% for in-situ match-ups from 15 lakes ( N = 88). The POC in the eutrophic lakes was mainly produced by phytoplankton ( R 2 = 0.87). As a result, the surface POC content presented a unimodal peak in summer. However, in addition to air temperature regulations (0.52 – 68.53%), the water level also showed apparent effects on increasing POC storage, with relative contributions of 29.29 – 95.51% for the six largest lakes. Therefore, multisource satellite data are needed to derive POC storage in global eutrophic lakes remotely. This study is the first attempt to three-dimensionally observe lake POC contents from space and is important for understanding the carbon cycle in shallow eutrophic lakes.

Abstract:Particulate phosphorus (PP) plays an important biological role in the eutrophication process, and is thus an important water quality parameter for assessing climatic change and anthropogenic activity factors that affect aquatic ecosystems. Here, we used 20-year Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to explore the patterns and trends of PP concentration (CPP) in eutrophic Lake Chaohu based on a new empirical model. The validation results indicated that the developed model performed satisfactorily in estimating CPP, with a mean absolute percentage error of 31.89% and root mean square error of 0.022 mg/L. Long-term MODIS observations (2000-2019) revealed that the CPP of Lake Chaohu has experienced an overall increasing trend and distinct spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The driving factor analysis revealed that the chemical fertilizer consumption, municipal wastewater, industrial sewage, precipitation, and air temperature were the five potential driving factors and collectively explained more than 81% of the long-term variation in CPP. This study provides the long-term datasets of CPP in inland waters and new insights for future water eutrophication control and restoration efforts.
Temporal and spatial variability of chlorophyll a concentration in Lake Taihu using MODIS time-series data

Abstract:In order to predict the distribution of chlorophyll a synoptically in Lake Taihu from 2006 to 2008, a common empirical algorithm was developed to relate time series chlorophyll a concentrations in the lake to reflectance derived as a function of band 2 MODIS data ( r 2 = 0.907, n = 145) using time series from 2005. The empirical model was further validated with chlorophyll a data from a 2008 to 2009 dataset, with RMSE < 7.48 μg l −1 and r 2 = 0.978. The seasonal and inter-annual variability of the surface chlorophyll a concentration from 2006 to 2008 was then examined using Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis. The results revealed that the first four modes were significant, explaining 54.0% of the total chlorophyll a variance, and indicated that during the summer, algal blooms always occur in the northern bays, Meiliang Bay and Gonghu Bay, while they occur along the southwestern lakeshore during early summer, fall, and even early winter. The inter-annual variance analysis showed that the duration of algal blooms was from April to December of 2007, which was different from the bloom periods in 2006 and 2008. The results of EOF analysis show its potential for long-term integrated lake monitoring, not only in Lake Taihu but also in other large lakes threatened by accelerating eutrophication.
Study on species and sources of particulate organic phosphorus in three large eutrophic lakes of China using 31P-NMR and 3D-EEMs

Abstract:The species and concentrations of particulate organic phosphorus (POP) in the surface waters of Lake Hulun, Lake Taihu and Lake Dianchi of China were characterized by solution P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Nine POP species were detected in the NaOH extracts. Orthophosphate monoesters, polyphosphate, DNA, phosphonates and unknown phosphorus were widely found in all the samples. The three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-REM) analysis for the NaOH extracts of all samples indicated that POP species in Lake Hulun came mainly from exogenous sources while most POP species in the other two lakes were from endogenous sources. The terrestrial sources of POP originating from hay in the surrounding grasslands made the primary POP species (orthophosphate monoesters, DNA and polyphosphate) difficult to be biodegraded and further transferred into dissolved forms in Lake Hulun. Approximately 13.32 mu g L-1 and 6.39 mu g L-1 of DNA were detected in central Lake Taihu and Lake Dianchi, respectively. This DNA would be easily transported and transferred because it originated mainly from cyanobacterial sources. In addition, there were 1.06 mu g L-1 and 0.67 mu g L-1 of polyphosphate in these two lakes. These indicated that most of POPs in the surface water of Lake Taihu and Lake Dianchi did more benefits for phosphorus cycles than that in Lake Hulun. Thus, different phosphorus forms, levels and origin are emerged in the three eutrophic lakes of China.
Long-Term Spatial and Temporal Monitoring of Cyanobacteria Blooms Using MODIS on Google Earth Engine: A Case Study in Taihu Lake

Abstract:As cyanobacteria blooms occur in many types of inland water, routine monitoring that is fast and accurate is important for environment and drinking water protection. Compared to field investigations, satellite remote sensing is an efficient and effective method for monitoring cyanobacteria blooms. However, conventional remote sensing monitoring methods are labor intensive and time consuming, especially when processing long-term images. In this study, we embedded related processing procedures in Google Earth Engine, developed an operational cyanobacteria bloom monitoring workflow. Using this workflow, we measured the spatiotemporal patterns of cyanobacteria blooms in China’s Taihu Lake from 2000 to 2018. The results show that cyanobacteria bloom patterns in Taihu Lake have significant spatial and temporal differentiation: the interannual coverage of cyanobacteria blooms had two peaks, and the condition was moderate before 2006, peaked in 2007, declined rapidly after 2008, remained moderate and stable until 2015, and then reached another peak around 2017; bays and northwest lake areas had heavier cyanobacteria blooms than open lake areas; most cyanobacteria blooms primarily occurred in April, worsened in July and August, then improved after October. Our analysis of the relationship between cyanobacteria bloom characteristics and environmental driving factors indicates that: from both monthly and interannual perspectives, meteorological factors are positively correlated with cyanobacteria bloom characteristics, but as for nutrient loadings, they are only positively correlated with cyanobacteria bloom characteristics from an interannual perspective. We believe reducing total phosphorous, together with restoring macrophyte ecosystem, would be the necessary long-term management strategies for Taihu Lake. Our workflow provides an automatic and rapid approach for the long-term monitoring of cyanobacteria blooms, which can improve the automation and efficiency of routine environmental management of Taihu Lake and may be applied to other similar inland waters.

Abstract:The proliferation of algal blooms can lead to environmental issues. The phytoplankton responsible for these blooms are diverse. Different species of bloom-forming algae have distinct characteristics and hazards, and therefore need different treatment methods. An accurate and quick determination of the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of different algal species is crucial for lake ecological restoration. Based on the differences in remote sensing reflectance ( R rs ) of various typical algae species in eutrophic lakes (including Microcystis aeruginosa , Aphanizomenon sp., and Pseudanabaena sp. in Cyanobacteria and Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus quadricauda in Chlorophytes), difference index and algae distinguishing index were developed to differentiate algae species. A validation, using an independent dataset from an indoor experiment and in-situ-measured and satellite-image-derived R rs , showed that the algorithm can provide reliable results (overall accuracies of 81.97%, 81.25%, and 60.42%, respectively). According to Ocean and Land Color Instrument images of Lake Taihu in the period of 2016 to 2020, Microcystis was the dominant algae, followed by Pseudanabaena and Aphanizomenon . The dominance of the two types of Chlorophytes was less pronounced. The proportion of Microcystis as the dominant algae was highest in summer, while the proportion of Pseudanabaena peaked in winter. The proportion of Aphanizomenon varied slightly throughout the year, while the proportion of the two Chlorophytes peaked in winter. In terms of spatial distribution, the patterns in spring and autumn were relatively similar. In summer, approximately 80% of the lake was dominated by Microcystis. In winter, Chlorella and Scenedesmus were more prevalent along the southeastern shore of Lake Taihu. The construction and application of this model can provide a technical support for prediction and prevention of blooms in inland lakes.

Abstract:Chlorophyll a (Chla) concentration can be used as an indicator of algal biomass, and the accumulation of algal biomass in water column is essential for the emergence of surface blooms. By using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) data, a machine learning algorithm was previously developed to assess algal biomass within the euphotic depth (Beu). Here, a long-term Beu dataset of Lake Taihu from 2003 to 2020 was generated to examine its spatio-temporal dynamics, sensitivity to environmental factors, and variations in comparison to the surface algal bloom area. During this period, the daily Beu (total Beu within the whole lake) exhibited temporal fluctuations between 40 and 90 t Chla, with an annual average of 63.32 ± 5.23 t Chla. Notably, it reached its highest levels in 2007 (72.34 t Chla) and 2017 (73.57 t Chla). Moreover, it demonstrated a clear increasing trend of 0.197 t Chla/y from 2003 to 2007, followed by a slight decrease of 0.247 t Chla/y after 2017. Seasonal variation showed a bimodal annual cycle, characterized by a minor peak in March ∼ April and a major peak in July ∼ September. Spatially, the average pixel-based Beu (total Beu of a unit water column) ranged from 21.17 to 49.85 mg Chla, with high values predominantly distributed in the northwest region and low values in the central region. The sensitivity of Beu to environmental factors varies depending on regions and time scales. Temperature has a significant impact on monthly variation (65.73%), while the level of nutrient concentrations influences annual variation (55.06%). Wind speed, temperature, and hydrodynamic conditions collectively influence the spatial distribution of Beu throughout the entire lake. Algal bloom biomass can capture trend changes in two mutant years as well as bimodal phenological changes compared to surface algal bloom area. This study can provide a basis for scientific evaluation of water environment and a reference for monitoring algal biomass in other similar eutrophic lakes.

Abstract:Extensive monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms in lakes and reservoirs can provide important protection for drinking water sources. In most inland waterbodies, phycocyanin (PC) concentrations are the best indicator of cyanobacteria distribution. PC has a characteristic absorption peak near 620 nm; however, reflectance at this wavelength is only available from MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) and Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) sensors. MERIS stopped providing data after 2012 and OLCI was only recently launched (February 2016). TheModerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua is currently the only satellite instrument that can provide well-calibrated top-of-atmosphere radiance data over an extended number of years to the present. In this study, we develop and validate a new approach based on empirical orthogonal function (EOF) to quantify PC concentrations in a turbid inland lake (Lake Chaohu, China). Based on Rayleigh-corrected reflectance data (Rrc) at 469, 555, 645, and 859 nm, the concentrations of PC were estimated by regression of 87 concurrent MODIS-field measurements for bloom and nonbloom conditions. The validation (N = 93) showed R-2 = 0.40 and unbiased RMS = 60.86%. Application of the algorithm from 2000 and 2014 showed spatial distribution patterns and seasonal changes that confirmed in situ and MERIS-based studies of floating algae mats. The spatial information on PC concentrations in Lake Chaohu had a reduced sensitivity to perturbations from thin aerosols and high sediments. This EOF approach allows us for new insights in the long-term dynamics of shallow lakes and reservoirs where having a better understanding of cyanobacterial blooms is important.
Landsat observations of chlorophyll-a variations in Lake Taihu from 1984 to 2019

Abstract:Long-term datasets of chlorophyll-a (Chla) are necessary to evaluate changes in eutrophication and to assist in lake management; however, current aquatic remote sensing datasets usually start after 2000. Here, a 36-year Chla dataset was assembled from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), and Operational Landsat Imager (OLI) imagery for Lake Taihu (China) over the period from 1984 to 2019. TM, ETM+ and OLI reflectances were compared to those using the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra, and agreement was found within a mean absolute difference of 15%. An algorithm for Chla retrieval developed by a machine learning approach (XGBoost) had good performance (mean absolute percentage error = 35%, mean absolute error = 9%) and outperformed random forest and support vector machine regressors and existing empirical algorithms for Lake Taihu. Landsat-derived mean Chla ranged between 12.8 µg L-1 and 32.3 µg L-1 and indicates that Lake Taihu has been eutrophic from 1984 to 2019. Chla in the northern region was higher than that in other areas over the 36 years. With the limited number of Landsat images each year, we found that the annual variation in Chla had high values during the periods of 1984–1992 and 1994–1997 and significant increases in 1999–2009 and from 2012 to 2019. The spatial and temporal variations in Chla for Lake Taihu were correlated with dissolved nutrients and air temperature. This research illustrates the use of machine learning approaches to generate long-term datasets of water quality from multiple Landsat instruments, for extending watercolor archives for lakes.

Resveratrol in cardioprotection: a therapeutic promise of alternative medicine.

Abstract:Resveratrol, a polyphenol phytoalexin, possesses diverse biochemical and physiological actions, including estrogenic, antiplatelet, and anti-inflammatory properties. Several recent studies determined the cardioprotective abilities of resveratrol. Both in experiments (acute) and in chronic models, resveratrol attenuates myocardial ischemic reperfusion injury, atherosclerosis, and reduces ventricular arrhythmias. It appears that resveratrol-mediated cardioprotection is achieved through the preconditioning effect (the best yet devised method of cardioprotection), rather than direct protection. Thus, resveratrol likely fulfills the definition of a pharmacological preconditioning compound and gives hope to the therapeutic promise of alternative medicine.
Long-Term Spatiotemporal Variation and Environmental Driving Forces Analyses of Algal Blooms in Taihu Lake Based on Multi-Source Satellite and Land Observations

Abstract:The algal blooms caused by the eutrophication of lakes is a major environmental problem. In this study, we took China’s Taihu Lake as the research area, using multi-source satellite imagery data to monitor the information of algal blooms from 2008 to 2017. Following the analyses of the temporal and spatial variation trends of the blooms, water quality and meteorological data from land observation stations were employed to investigate the main environmental driving forces of the algal bloom outbreaks. The results show that, over the decade, the blooms with medium and higher hazard degrees mainly occurred in summer and autumn, and especially in autumn. From 2008 to 2016, the algal blooms outbreak degree was relatively stable, but, in 2017, it was severe, and the Northwest Lake area and the northern bays had heavier blooms than the other lake areas. From the analyses of the environmental driving forces, the variation trend of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations in Taihu Lake from 2008 to 2017 was moderate, and the minimum concentrations of TN and TP both exceeded the threshold for algal bloom outbreaks. It was also found that the algal bloom area had notable correlations with the sunshine duration, wind speed and direction, precipitation, and air pressure. The research results of this paper will provide a theoretical basis for the scientific prediction of the occurrence of algal blooms in Taihu Lake.

Abstract:Charret et al. applied the properties of Grassmann generators to develop a new method to calculate the coefficientes of the high temperature expansion of the grand canonical partition function of self-interacting fermionic models on d-dimensions (d ³ 1). The method explores the anti-commuting nature of fermionic fields and avoids the calculation of the fermionic path integral. We apply this new method to the relativistic free Dirac fermions and recover the known results in the literature without the b-independent and m-independent infinities that plague the continuum path integral formulation.
