Abstract:The deep mechanisms shaping bacterial assembly are a crucial challenge in drinking water ecosystem. However, much less is known about seasonal diversity distributions and assembly mechanisms of abundant and rare bacteria in drinking water. The combination of environmental variables and high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing was conducted to examine the composition, assembly, co-occurrence patterns of abundant and rare bacteria from five drinking water sites across four seasons in one year in China. The results indicated that abundant taxa were mainly composed of Rhizobiales_UG1, Sphingomonadales_UG1, and Comamonadaceae, while rare taxa were Sphingomonadales_UG1, Rhizobiales_UG2, and Rhizobiales_UG1. The richness of rare bacteria was greater than that of abundant ones, and the richness had no differences among seasons. The beta diversity was significantly discrepant in abundant and rare communities and among seasons. Deterministic mechanism accounted for a larger contribution to abundant taxa than rare taxa. Furthermore, water temperature had higher effects on abundant microbiome than rare ones. Co-occurrence network analysis indicated that abundant taxa that occupied frequently in central positions had stronger effect on co-occurrence network. In our study, these results collectively suggested that rare bacteria respond to environmental variables with an analogical pattern to abundant counterparts (similar community assembly), but their ecological diversities, driving forces, and co-occurrence patterns were not equivalent in drinking water.

Abstract:Unraveling the assembly mechanism is a core research topic of microbial ecology. Abundant and rare microbial communities are crucial for diversity, function and host health in a given ecosystem, but few studies focused on their assembly strategies. Here, we explored the microbial diversity of abundant and rare communities of water, shrimp intestine and sediment habitats in the shrimp cultural ponds. Our results found that the numbers of rare operational taxonomic units (OTUs) (6,003, 4,566 and 8,237 OTUs of water, intestine and sediment) was dozens of times more than abundant ones (only 199, 157 and 122 OTUs of water, intestine and sediment). The community diversity of abundant and rare microbial taxa was markedly different, as well as their taxonomic composition. Despite different diversity, similar abundance-occupancy relationship and biogeographic patterns between the abundant and rare microbial communities were observed, with much stronger obvious distance-decay relationships for rare community than abundant community. Furthermore, stochastic processes dominated the community assemblies of both abundant and rare microbial taxa, and deterministic process contributed more microbial community variation to rare taxa than abundant taxa. All the findings advance our understanding on the community assembly strategies of abundant and rare microbial taxa and prompt the contributions of abundant and rare microbial community to the aquatic ecosystems, which will improve aquaculture management strategy.

Abstract:Bacterioplankton communities commonly consist of few highly abundant species and a large number of rare species that play key roles in biogeochemical cycles of aquatic ecosystems. However, little is known about the biogeographic assemblies of these communities, especially in large rivers suffering from cascade dam regulation. Here, we used a <i>16S rRNA</i> gene amplicon sequencing approach to investigate the biogeographic patterns and underlying assembly mechanisms of abundant and rare bacterioplankton taxa in cascade reservoirs of the Jinsha River in China. The results revealed species loss of bacterioplankton due to dam construction, which was more significant for rare taxa than for abundant ones. The distributions of abundant and rare taxa exhibited similar spatial and temporal patterns, which were significantly distinct between winter and summer and between upstream and downstream reservoirs. Both spatial (dispersal-related process) and environmental (selection process) factors seemed to together govern the assembly and biogeography of abundant and rare taxa, although both factors explained only a small fraction of variation in the rare taxa. More importantly, environmental factors explained more community variation in abundant sub-community than that in rare sub-community. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that abundant species with closer interactions were more often located in a central position of the network compared with rare species. Nevertheless, half of the keystone species were rare species and may play important roles in maintaining the network stability. Overall, these findings indicate that distinct assembly mechanisms underlie the similar biogeography of rare and abundant bacteria in cascade reservoirs of a large river.

Abstract:In the context of anthropogenic impacts on riverine ecosystems globally, understanding the response of bac-terioplankton to anthropogenic stress is important for human and environmental health. Bacterioplankton communities are critical for maintaining ecosystem stability, but little is known about their co-occurrence net-works and assembly processes in intense human-impacted plains river networks. By applying cooccurrence networks, variance partitioning, and null model analysis, we investigated the mechanisms of interaction and assembly of abundant (>1% relative abundance) and rare (<0.01%) taxa at 32 sites in river networks along an urbanization gradient (urban, suburban, and agricultural areas). Our results show that interactions between the bacterioplankton communities were more complex in urban areas than in other areas, and that environmental factors (primarily fluoride, nitrate nitrogen, and dissolved organic carbon) as well as spatial factors (i.e., Moran's Eigenvector Maps) explained most of the variation in bacterioplankton communities. Abundant taxa showed stronger spatial turnover than rare taxa, indicating that spatial factors played a greater role in the assemblage of abundant taxa. Land use types, especially impervious surfaces, had a unique influence on rare taxa, but contributed less to community change than other factors. In addition, rare taxa were mainly influenced by deterministic processes, whereas abundant taxa were more influenced by stochastic processes, especially in agricultural areas. These findings suggest that the shares of abundant and rare taxa mediate disturbances in local environmental conditions in anthropogenic river network areas, while deterministic processes play a greater role in shaping bacterioplankton communities. Overall, our study provides important insights for environmental monitoring and management in areas of intense human activity, emphasizing the need to consider both abundant and rare taxa when assessing the impact of human activities on riverine ecosystems.

Abstract:The rare microbial biosphere provides broad ecological services and resilience to various ecosystems.Nevertheless,the biogeographical patterns and assembly processes of rare bacterioplankton communities in large rivers remain uncertain.In this study,we investigated the biogeography and community assembly processes of abundant and rare bacterioplankton taxa in the Yangtze River(China)covering a distance of 4300 km.The results revealed similar spatiotemporal patterns of abundant taxa(AT)and rare taxa(RT)at both taxonomic and phylogenetic levels,and analysis of similarities revealed that RT was significantly influenced by season and landform than AT.Furthermore,RT correlated with more environmental factors than AT,whereas environmental and spatial factors explained a lower proportion of community shifts in RT than in AT.The steeper distance-decay slopes in AT indicated higher spatial turnover rates of abundant subcommunities than rare subcommunities.The null model revealed that both AT and RT were mainly governed by stochastic processes.However,dispersal limitation primarily governed the AT,whereas the undominated process accounted for a higher fraction of stochastic processes in RT.River flow and suspended solids mediated the balance between the stochastic and deterministic processes in RT.The spatiotemporal dynamics and assembly processes of total taxa were more similar as AT than RT.This study provides new insights into both significant spatiotemporal dynamics and inconsistent assembly processes of AT and RT in large rivers.

Abstract:Karst rivers are highly susceptible to environmental disturbance due to their robust hydraulic connectivity. However, current knowledge of the mechanisms that regulate the assembly of bacterial and protistan subcommunities in river ecosystems, particularly in karst regions, is limited. By employing 16S and 18S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we explored how the diversities and assembly of abundant and rare bacterial and protistan subcommunities adapt to the local environmental variables in a karst river. Both bacterial and protistan rare subcommunities in karst river environments showed a similar biogeography to their abundant subcommunities. Also, a significant distance-decay pattern was observed in all components of the bacterial and protistan subcommunities along the Chishui River, with the rare subcommunities showing a more pronounced distance-decay pattern compared to the abundant subcommunities. Except protist rare subcommunity, the abundant and rare bacterial and abundant protistan subcommunities were strongly structured by the dispersal limitation processes rather than heterogeneous selection. Either bacteria or temperature, elevation and conductivity were the primary drivers for both abundant and rare subcommunities. Additionally, our results suggested that the rare subcommunities contribute significantly to the persistence and stability of microbial networks in the Chishui River, as they exhibited a higher number of keystones compared to the abundant subcommunities. Overall, our study revealed that in the karst river ecosystem, abundant bacterial subcommunities had a higher potential for environmental adaptation than rare bacterial and protistan subcommunities and identified the factors that moderate their assembly processes.

Abstract:Bacterioplankton play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling in rivers. The dynamics of hydrologic conditions in rivers were believed to affect geographic pattern and assembly process of these microorganisms, which have not been widely investigated. In this study, the geographic pattern and assembly process of bacterioplankton community in river networks of the Taihu Basin were systematically explored using amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The results showed that the diversity, structure, and taxonomic composition of bacterioplankton community all exhibited significant temporal variation during wet, normal, and dry seasons (p<0.01). The neutral community model and null model were applied to reveal the assembly process of bacterioplankton community. The stochastic process and deterministic process both shaped the bacterioplankton community with greater influence of deterministic process. In addition, the abundant and rare bacterioplankton communities were comparatively analyzed. The abundant and rare bacterioplankton communities exhibited similar temporal dynamics (principal coordinates analysis) and spatial variations (distance-decay relationship), indicating similar geographic patterns. Meanwhile, distinct assembly processes were observed for the abundant and rare bacterioplankton communities. Stochastic process (dispersal limitation) shaped the abundant bacterioplankton community while deterministic process (heterogeneous selection) dominated the assembly process of rare bacterioplankton community. Mantel test, redundancy analysis, and correlation analysis together indicated that pH and dissolved oxygen were the major environmental attributes that affected thestructure and assembly process of bacterioplankton community. These results expanded our understanding of the geographic pattern, assembly process, and driving factors of bacterioplankton community in river networks and provided clues for the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:The revolution of molecular techniques in the field of microbial ecology not only allows an in‐depth exploration of abundant bacteria, but also confirms the existence of “rare biosphere.” However, the mechanisms underlying the assembly process of abundant and rare bacteria in plateau lakes are still poorly understood. In the present study, distribution of abundant and rare bacteria in 21 lakes on Yungui Plateau, China and the relative importance of deterministic and neutral factors to their biogeographic patterns were examined. Results surprisingly showed that similar biogeographic patterns of rare and abundant taxa were generally shaped via similar assembly mechanisms. For both bacterial groups, deterministic process strongly influenced the distribution, while neutral process was not at play. In addition, they both exhibited a weak distance–decay relationship. Nevertheless, environmental drivers of rare and abundant taxa and their importance were not exactly the same. Water physicochemical property was the most dominant driver shaping the biogeographic pattern of rare taxa, followed by lake morphology and watershed land‐use, while for abundant taxa, watershed land‐use was the most dominant driver and lake morphology did not play a significant role. This study suggested that rare bacteria in high‐altitude aquatic ecosystems might experience equally low extinction risk and respond to environmental changes in a similar manner to abundant ones, but their ecological niches and functions were not identical. To fully understand the assembly mechanism of bacterial community, it is necessary to differentiate the community by traits of taxa.

Abstract:Purpose Microorganisms are an essential component of riverine ecosystems. However, the assembly mechanisms of riverine microbial sub-communities with different rarity are poorly understood. Thus, this study aimed to examine the assembly mechanisms of microbial communities and the sub-communities with different rarity in soils, sediments, and water along the Nu River. Materials and methods Water, sediment, and riparian soil samples were collected from 20 sites along the Nu River. The microbial abundance and diversity were examined via real-time PCR and Illumina amplicon high-throughput sequencing, respectively. The assembly mechanisms of microbial communities and the sub-communities with different rarity were determined based on iCAMP which is a recently developed phylogenetic bin-based null model analysis method. Results and discussion The results showed that microbial abundance, diversity, and community profiles significantly differed among different habitats. The microbial community assembly was mainly driven by homogeneous selection, dispersal limitation, and drift. With an increase in rarity, the contribution of drift and homogenizing dispersal to the assembly of microbial sub-communities significantly increased, while the contribution of homogeneous selection showed a reverse trend. This study also showed that the contribution of stochastic and deterministic processes to the microbial community assembly was significantly correlated with geographic distance and environmental factors, respectively. Conclusions These findings suggest that the assembly mechanisms of riverine microbial sub-communities with different rarity are distinct, improving our understanding of riverine microbial diversity maintenance mechanisms.

Abstract:The factors determining stochastic and deterministic processes that drive microbial community structure, specifically the balance of abundant and rare bacterial taxa, remain underexplored. Here we examined biogeographic patterns of abundant and rare bacterial taxa and explored environmental factors influencing their community assembly processes in agricultural fields across eastern China. More phylogenetic turnover correlating with spatial distance was observed in abundant than rare sub-communities. Homogeneous selection was the main assembly process for both the abundant and rare sub-communities; however, the abundant sub-community was more tightly clustered phylogenetically and was more sensitive to dispersal limitations than the rare sub-community. Rare sub-community of rice fields and abundant sub-community of maize fields were more governed by stochastic assembly processes, which showed higher OTU richness. We propose a conceptual paradigm wherein soil pH and mean annual temperature mediate the assembly of the abundant and rare sub-communities, respectively. A higher soil pH leads to deterministic assembly of the abundant sub-community. For the rare sub-community, the dominance of stochasticity in low temperature regions indicates weaker niche-based exclusion and the arrival of more evolutionary lineages. These findings suggest that the community assembly processes for abundant and rare bacterial taxa are dependent on distinct environmental variables in agro-ecosystems. Abstract:Thermokarst lakes are forming from permafrost thaw and are severely affected by accelerating climate change. Sediment and water in these lakes are distinct habitats but closely connected. However, our understanding of the differences and linkages between sediment and water in thermokarst lakes remains largely unknown, especially from the perspective of community assembly mechanisms. Here, we examined bacterial communities in sediment and water in thermokarst lakes in the Yellow River Source area, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Bacterial taxa were divided into abundant and rare according to their relative abundance, and the Sorensen dissimilarity (β sor ) was partitioned into turnover (β turn ) and nestedness (β nest ). The whole bacterial communities and the abundant and rare subcommunities differed substantially between sediment and water in taxonomical composition, α-diversity, and β-diversity. Sediment had significantly lower α-diversity indexes but higher β-diversity than water. In general, bacterial communities are predominantly governed by strong turnover processes (β turn /β sor ratio of 0.925). Bacterial communities in sediment had a significantly higher β turn /β sor ratio than in water. Abundant subcommunities were significantly lower in the β turn /β sor ratio compared with rare subcommunities. The results suggest that the bacterial communities of thermokarst lakes, especially rare subcommunities or particularly in sediment, might be strongly structured by heterogeneity in the source material, environmental filtering, and geographical isolation, leading to compositionally distinct communities. This integral study increased our current knowledge of thermokarst lakes, enhancing our understanding of the community assembly rules and ecosystem structures and processes of these rapidly changing and vulnerable ecosystems.

Abstract:Microbial communities are composed of many rare species and a few abundant species. Considering the disproportionate importance of rare species for ecosystem functioning, it is important to understand the mechanisms structuring the rare and abundant components of a diverse community in response to environmental changes. Here, we used a 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing approach to investigate the bacterial community diversity in the Eastern Indian Ocean (EIO) during the monsoon and intermonsoon. We employed a phylogenetic null model and network analysis to evaluate the assembly processes and co-occurrence pattern of the microbial community. We found that higher bacterial diversity was detected in the intermonsoon with high temperature and low Chlorophyll a concentrations and N/P ratios. The balance between ecological deterministic processes and stochastic processes varied with seasons in the EIO. Meanwhile, conditionally rare taxa (CRT) were more likely modulated by variable selection processes than always rare taxa (ART) and abundant taxa (AT) (CRT > ART > AT). By linking assembly process and species co-occurrence, we demonstrated that the microbial co-occurrence associations tended to be higher when deterministic processes (mainly variable selection) were weaker. This negative trend was observed in rare species rather than abundant species. The linkage could enhance our understanding of the underlying mechanisms underpinning the generation and maintenance of microbial community diversity.

Abstract:The Yellow River is a valuable resource in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and plays a vital role in local human activities and biodiversity. Bacteria are a crucial component of river ecosystems, but the driving factors and assembly mechanisms of bacterial community structure in this region remain unclear. Herein, we documented the bacterial community composition, determinants, co-occurrence pattern, and assembly mechanism for surface water and sediment. In comparison to sediment, the bacterioplankton community showed significant seasonal variation, as well as less diversity and abundance. The network topology parameters indicated that the sediment bacterial network was more stable than water, but the bacterioplankton network had higher connectivity. In this lotic ecosystem, CODMn, Chl a, and pH affected the structure of the bacterioplankton community, while TP was the primary factor influencing the structure of the sediment bacterial community. The combined results of the neutral community model and the phylogenetic null model indicate that Bacterial communities in both habitats were mainly affected by stochastic processes, with ecological processes dominated by ecological drift for bacterioplankton and dispersal limitation for sediment bacteria. These results provide essential insights into future research on microbial ecology, environmental monitoring, and classified management in the Ningxia section of the Yellow River.

Abstract:Inter-basin water transfer projects, such as the Yellow River to Qingdao Water Diversion Project (YQWD), are essential for addressing water scarcity, but impact local aquatic ecosystems. This study investigates the seasonal characteristics of eukaryotic microbial communities in the Jihongtan Reservoir, the main water-receiving body of YQWD, over a one-year period using 18S rDNA amplicon sequencing. The results showed that the eukaryotic microbial diversity did not exhibit significant seasonal variation (p > 0.05), but there was a notable variance in the community structure (p < 0.05). Arthropoda and Paracyclopina, representing the most dominant phylum and the most dominant genus, respectively, both exhibited the lowest abundance during the winter. The Chlorophyta, as the second-dominant phylum, demonstrates its higher abundance in the spring and winter. The Mantel test and PLS-PM (Partial Least Squares Path Modeling) revealed that water temperature (WT), dissolved oxygen (DO), and pH influenced the seasonal dynamic of eukaryotic microbial communities significantly, of which WT was the primary driving factor. In addition to environmental factors, water diversion is likely to be an important influencing factor. The results of the co-occurrence network and robustness suggested that the spring network is the most complex and exhibits the highest stability. Moreover, keystone taxa within networks have been identified, revealing that these key groups encompass both abundant and rare species, with specificity to different seasons. These insights are vital for understanding the seasonal variation of microbial communities in the Jihongtan Reservoir during ongoing water diversions.

However, large-scale distribution patterns, environmental adaptations, community assembly, and evolutionary dynamics of microbial communities remain largely underexplored. This study investigated the characteristics of microbial communities on rare and abundant taxa in alkaline lake sediments in west and northwest China. We observed that abundant taxa varied significantly with geographical distance, while rare taxa remained unaffected by regional differences. The assembly process of abundant taxa was influenced by dispersal limitation, whilst rare taxa were predominantly driven by heterogeneous selection. Network analysis indicated that rare taxa as core species for community interactions and community stability. Rare taxa exhibited higher speciation and transition rate than abundant taxa, serving as a genetic reservoir and potential candidates to become abundance taxa, highlighting their crucial role in maintaining microbial diversity. These insights underscore the significant influence of rare taxa on ecosystem biodiversity and stability in alkaline lakes.

Abstract:The diversity and distribution patterns of the abundant and rare microbial sub-communities in hot spring ecosystems and their assembly mechanisms are poorly understood. The present study investigated the diversity and distribution patterns of the total, abundant, conditionally rare, and always rare taxa in the low- and moderate-temperature hot spring sediments on the Tibetan Plateau based on high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and explored their major environmental drivers. The diversity of these four bacterial taxa showed no significant change between the low-temperature and moderate-temperature hot spring sediments, whereas the bacterial compositions were obviously different. Stochasticity dominated the bacterial sub-community assemblages, while heterogeneous selection also played an important role in shaping the abundant and conditionally rare taxa between the low-temperature and moderate-temperature hot spring sediments. No significant difference in the topological properties of co-occurrence networks was found between the conditionally rare and abundant taxa, and the connections between the paired operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were almost positive. The diversity of the total, abundant, and conditionally rare taxa was governed by the salinity of hot spring sediments, while that of the always rare taxa was determined by the content of S element. In contrast, temperature had significant direct effect on the composition of the total, abundant, and conditionally rare taxa, but relatively weak influence on that of the always rare taxa. Besides, salinity was another major environmental factor driving the composition of the abundant and rare sub-communities in the hot spring sediments. These results reveal the assembly processes and major environmental drivers that shaped different bacterial sub-communities in the hot spring sediments on the Tibetan Plateau, and indicate the importance of conditionally rare taxa in constructing bacterial communities. These findings enhance the current understanding of the ecological mechanisms maintaining the ecosystem stability and services in extreme environment.

Abstract:Revealing the ecological processes and environmental adaptation of abundant and rare archaea is a central, but poorly understood, topic in ecology. Here, abundant and rare archaeal diversity, community assembly processes and co-occurrence patterns were comparatively analyzed in Arctic marine sediments. Our findings revealed that the rare taxa exhibited significantly higher diversity compared to the abundant taxa. Additionally, the abundant taxa displayed stronger environmental adaptation than the rare taxa. The co-occurrence network analysis demonstrated that the rare taxa developed more interspecies interactions and modules in response to environmental disturbance. Furthermore, the community assembly of abundant and rare taxa in sediments was primarily controlled by stochastic and deterministic processes, respectively. These findings provide valuable insights into the archaeal community assembly processes and significantly contribute to a deeper understanding of the environmental adaptability of abundant and rare taxa in Arctic marine sediments.

Abstract:A short-term oral administration of live Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells, strain Sillix Hansen DSM 1883, resulted in enhanced resistance of mice toward infections with K. pneumoniae. S. pneumoniae and S. pyogenes A produced by intranasal inoculation. Yeast pre-treatment also increased the efficacy of antibiotic therapy in bacterial infections and of antiviral drugs in viral infections. Yeast treatment of animals stimulated phagocytosis, activated the complement system and induced interferon which are likely to represent the main mechanisms of action whereby pretreatment of mice with live S. cerevisiae cells increases resistance to infection. It is concluded that preventive administration of live Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells should be used for increasing resistance to bacterial infections, in particular of the respiratory tract, or to viral infections, as well as an adjunct to antibiotic and antiviral drug therapy.

Abstract:Bacteria play a crucial role in pollutant degradation, biogeochemical cycling, and energy flow within river ecosystems. However, the underlying mechanisms governing bacterial community assembly and their response to environmental factors at seasonal scales in subtropical rivers remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing on water samples from the Liuxi River to investigate the composition, assembly processes, and co-occurrence relationships of bacterial communities during the wet season and dry season. The results demonstrated that seasonal differences in hydrochemistry significantly influenced the composition of bacterial communities. A more heterogeneous community structure and increased alpha diversity were observed during the dry season. Water temperature emerged as the primary driver for seasonal changes in bacterial communities. Dispersal limitation predominantly governed community assembly, however, during the dry season, its contribution increased due to decreased immigration rates. Co-occurrence network analysis reveals that mutualism played a prevailing role in shaping bacterial community structure. Compared to the wet season, the network of bacterial communities exhibited higher modularity, competition, and keystone species during the dry season, resulting in a more stable community structure. Although keystone species displayed distinct seasonal variations, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were consistently abundant keystone species maintaining network structure in both seasons. Our findings provide insights into how bacterial communities respond to seasonal environmental changes, uncovering underlying mechanisms governing community assembly in subtropical rivers, which are crucial for the effective management and conservation of riverine ecosystems.
Divergent prokaryotic microbial assembly, co-existence patterns and functions in surrounding river sediments of a Cu-polymetallic deposit in Tibet

Abstract:The exploitation of polymetallic deposits produces large amounts of mine drainage, which poses great challenges to the surrounding aquatic ecosystem. However, the prokaryotic microbial community assembly and co-existence patterns in the polluted area are poorly understood, especially in high-altitude localities. Herein, we investigated the prokaryotic microbial assembly, co-existence patterns and their potential functional responses in surrounding river sediments of a Cu-polymetallic deposit in Tibet. The sediments from mine drainage and surrounding tributaries exhibited distinct geochemical gradients, especially the changes in Cu content. The microbial community structure changed significantly, accompanied by decreased richness and diversity with increased Cu content. Interestingly, the relative abundances of some potential functional bacteria (e.g., Planctomycetota) actually increased as the Cu levels raised. In low contaminated area, ecological drift was the most important assembly process, whereas deterministic processes gained importance with pollution levels. Meanwhile, negative interactions in co-occurrence networks were more frequent with higher modularity and reduced keystone taxa in high contaminated area. Notably, the functions related to ABC transporters and quorum sensing (QS) were more abundant with high Cu content, which helped bacteria work together to cope with the stressful environment. Taken together, the physicochemical gradients dominated by Cu content drove the distribution, assembly and co-existence patterns of microbial communities in surrounding river sediments of a Cu-polymetallic deposit. These findings provide new insights into the maintenance mechanisms of prokaryotic microbial communities in response to heavy metal stress at high altitudes.
