Abstract:This paper describes a high-frame rate CCD camera capable of operating at 100 frames/s. This camera utilizes Kodak KAI-0340, an interline transfer CCD with 640(vertical)×480(horizontal) pixels. Two output ports are used to read out CCD data and pixel rates approaching 30 MHz. Because of its reduced effective opacity of vertical charge transfer registers, interline transfer CCD can cause undesired image artifacts, such as random white spots and smear generated in the registers. To increase frame rate, a kind of speed-up structure has been incorporated inside KAI-0340, then it is vulnerable to a vertical stripe effect. The phenomena which mentioned above may severely impair the image quality. To solve these problems, some electronic methods of eliminating these artifacts are adopted. Special clocking mode can dump the unwanted charge quickly, then the fast readout of the images, cleared of smear, follows immediately. Amplifier is used to sense and correct delay mismatch between the dual phase vertical clock pulses, the transition edges become close to coincident, so vertical stripes disappear. Results obtained with the CCD camera are shown.

Abstract:Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM), as an emerging computational imaging method, has been applied to quantitative phase imaging with resolution bypassing the physical limit of the detection objective. Due to the weak illumination intensity and long image acquisition time, the achieved imaging speed in current FPM methods is still low, making them unsuitable for real-time imaging applications. We propose and demonstrate a high-speed FPM method based on using laser illumination and digital micro-mirror devices for illumination angle scanning. In this new, to the best of our knowledge, FPM method, we realized quantitative phase imaging and intensity imaging at over 42 frames per second (fps) with around 1 µm lateral resolution. The quantitative phase images have revealed membrane height fluctuations of red blood cells with nanometer-scale sensitivity, while the intensity images have resolved subcellular features in stained cancer tissue slices.

Abstract:We present a framing integration ultrafast photography (FIP), which integrates the framing structure, codes a dynamic event by an inversed 4f system (I4F) and decodes regionally with high spatial resolution. In the experiment about laser-induced plasma, FIP achieved a framing rate of 5.3*1012 frames per second (fps) and an intrinsic spatial resolution of 110.4 lp/mm. It has an excellent spatio-temporal resolution and a compact and flexible structure. Hence, it can probe unrepeatable ultrafast intra- and inter-atomic/molecular dynamics, different in size and duration with high-quality. Besides, FIP can lay a foundation for integrating and simplifying ultrafast photography instruments. Here the minimum framing time (temporal resolution) is limited by only the laser pulse duration; be sure, attosecond laser technology may further increase framing rates by several orders of magnitude.

High-speed Real-Time Single-Pixel Microscopy Based on Fourier Sampling

Abstract:Single-pixel cameras based on the concepts of compressed sensing (CS) leverage the inherent structure of images to retrieve them with far fewer measurements and operate efficiently over a significantly broader spectral range than conventional silicon-based cameras. Recently, photonic time-stretch (PTS) technique facilitates the emergence of high-speed single-pixel cameras. A significant breakthrough in imaging speed of single-pixel cameras enables observation of fast dynamic phenomena. However, according to CS theory, image reconstruction is an iterative process that consumes enormous amounts of computational time and cannot be performed in real time. To address this challenge, we propose a novel single-pixel imaging technique that can produce high-quality images through rapid acquisition of their effective spatial Fourier spectrum. We employ phase-shifting sinusoidal structured illumination instead of random illumination for spectrum acquisition and apply inverse Fourier transform to the obtained spectrum for image restoration. We evaluate the performance of our prototype system by recognizing quick response (QR) codes and flow cytometric screening of cells. A frame rate of 625 kHz and a compression ratio of 10 recognition rate of the QR code. An imaging flow cytometer enabling high-content screening with an unprecedented throughput of 100,000 cells/s is also demonstrated. For real-time imaging applications, the proposed single-pixel microscope can significantly reduce the time required for image reconstruction by two orders of magnitude, which can be widely applied in industrial quality control and label-free biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Recent advances in imaging sensors and digital light projection technology have facilitated a rapid progress in 3D optical sensing, enabling 3D surfaces of complex-shaped objects to be captured with improved resolution and accuracy. However, due to the large number of projection patterns required for phase recovery and disambiguation, the maximum fame rates of current 3D shape measurement techniques are still limited to the range of hundreds of frames per second (fps). Here, we demonstrate a new 3D dynamic imaging technique, Micro Fourier Transform Profilometry ($\mu$FTP), which can capture 3D surfaces of transient events at up to 10,000 fps based on our newly developed high-speed fringe projection system. Compared with existing techniques, $\mu$FTP has the prominent advantage of recovering an accurate, unambiguous, and dense 3D point cloud with only two projected patterns. Furthermore, the phase information is encoded within a single high-frequency fringe image, thereby allowing motion-artifact-free reconstruction of transient events with temporal resolution of 50 microseconds. To show $\mu$FTP's broad utility, we use it to reconstruct 3D videos of 4 transient scenes: vibrating cantilevers, rotating fan blades, bullet fired from a toy gun, and balloon's explosion triggered by a flying dart, which were previously difficult or even unable to be captured with conventional approaches.

Abstract:Recent advances in imaging sensors and digital light projection technology have facilitated rapid progress in 3D optical sensing, enabling 3D surfaces of complex-shaped objects to be captured with high resolution and accuracy. Nevertheless, due to the inherent synchronous pattern projection and image acquisition mechanism, the temporal resolution of conventional structured light or fringe projection profilometry (FPP) based 3D imaging methods is still limited to the native detector frame rates. In this work, we demonstrate a new 3D imaging method, termed deep-learning-enabled multiplexed FPP (DLMFPP), that allows to achieve high-resolution and high-speed 3D imaging at near-one-order of magnitude-higher 3D frame rate with conventional low-speed cameras. By encoding temporal information in one multiplexed fringe pattern, DLMFPP harnesses deep neural networks embedded with Fourier transform, phase-shifting and ensemble learning to decompose the pattern and analyze separate fringes, furnishing a high signal-to-noise ratio and a ready-to-implement solution over conventional computational imaging techniques. We demonstrate this method by measuring different types of transient scenes, including rotating fan blades and bullet fired from a toy gun, at kHz using cameras of around 100 Hz. Experiential results establish that DLMFPP allows slow-scan cameras with their known advantages in terms of cost and spatial resolution to be used for high-speed 3D imaging tasks.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry is a well-established technique for optical 3D shape measurement. However, in many applications, it is desirable to make 3D measurements at very high speed, especially with fast moving or shape changing objects. In this work, we demonstrate a new 3D dynamic imaging technique, Micro Fourier Transform Profilometry (mu FTP), which can realize an acquisition rate up to 10,000 3D frame per second (fps). The high measurement speed is achieved by the number of patterns reduction as well as high-speed fringe projection hardware. In order to capture 3D information in such a short period of time, we focus on the improvement of the phase recovery, phase unwrapping, and error compensation algorithms, allowing to reconstruct an accurate, unambiguous, and distortion-free 3D point cloud with every two projected patterns. We also develop a high frame-rate fringe projection hardware by pairing a high-speed camera and a DLP projector, enabling binary pattern switching and precisely synchronized image capture at a frame rate up to 20,000 fps. Based on this system, we demonstrate high-quality textured 3D imaging of 4 transient scenes: vibrating cantilevers, rotating fan blades, flying bullet, and bursting balloon, which were previously difficult or even unable to be captured with conventional approaches. Abstract:High quality computational ghost imaging needs to acquire a large number of correlated measurements between the to-be-imaged scene and different reference patterns, thus ultra-high speed data acquisition is of crucial importance in real applications. To raise the acquisition efficiency, this paper reports a high speed computational ghost imaging system using a 20kHz spatial light modulator together with a 2MHz photodiode. Technically, the synchronization between such high frequency illumination and bucket detector needs nanosecond trigger precision, so the development of synchronization module is quite challenging. To handle this problem, we propose a simple and effective computational self-synchronization scheme by building a general mathematical model and introducing a high precision synchronization technique. The resulted efficiency is around 14 times faster than state-of-the-arts, and takes an important step towards ghost imaging of dynamic scenes. Besides, the proposed scheme is a general approach with high flexibility for readily incorporating other illuminators and detectors.

Abstract:A new method of x-ray picosecond framing photography was proposed to obtain four frame images. This method uses a double-pinholes x-ray imaging system and an image tube with a deflection shutter system which consists of a pair of shutter plates, two pair of separating plates,double-slits aperture and a pair of compensating plates. A ramp voltage is applied on the shutter and compensating plates. The framing tube with internal MCP intensifier was manufactured. Static resolution of 20 1p/mm was identified using an X-ray source. The obtained four frame quasi-static images with repetitive exposure showed the reality of the new framing concept. The dynamic characteristics of the camera were measured with X-ray emission from laser plasma. Four frame images have been obtained with 170 ps exposure time for each image and 3 1p/mm spatial resolution.

Abstract:Ultrafast compressed imaging is promising for capturing a large number of frames and providing single-shot observations of various unknown and important transient scenes. However, this technique often compromises spatial resolution in order to capture ultrafast phenomena with larger frame numbers. In this paper, a high-channel spectral-temporal active recording (H-STAR) is proposed, which achieves both femtosecond-level ultrafast imaging speed and high spatial resolution by substantially increasing the number of imaging channels. H-STAR can realize the highest spatial resolution of 101.6 lp/mm, the highest frame rate of 5.52 trillion frames per second, and the highest frame number of 120. The advantages of H-STAR, including its compact optical structure, high frame rate, large number of frames, and high imaging quality, are demonstrated through the capture of laser-induced plasma dynamics and the twice-reflection of the light spot. H-STAR enables single-shot and precise recording of ultrafast processes with both spatial and temporal complexity.

Abstract:Femtosecond-scale ultrafast imaging is an essential tool for visualizing ultrafast dynamics in molecular biology, physical chemistry, atomic physics, and fluid dynamics. Pump-probe imaging and a streak camera are the most widely used techniques, but they are either demanding the repetitions of the same scene or sacrificing the number of imaging dimensions. Many interesting single-shot ultrafast imaging techniques have been developed in recent years for recording non-repetitive dynamic scenes. Nevertheless, there are still weaknesses in the number of frames, the number of image pixels, or spatial/temporal resolution. Here, we present a single-shot ultrafast microscopy that can capture more than a dozen frames at a time with the frame rate of 5 THz. We combine a spatial light modulator and a custom-made echelon for efficiently generating a large number of reference pulses with designed time delays and propagation angles. The single-shot recording of the interference image between these reference pulses with a sample pulse allows us to retrieve the stroboscopic images of the dynamic scene at the timing of the reference pulses. We demonstrated the recording of 14 temporal snapshots at a time, which is the largest to date, with the optimal temporal resolution set by the laser output pulse. Our ultrafast microscopy is highly scalable in the number of frames and temporal resolutions, and this will have profound impacts on uncovering the interesting spatio-temporal dynamics yet to be explored.

Abstract:In order to maximize the spatio-temporal resolution of the scientific grade camera at width-limited ROI, this paper proposes a new hyper-frame-rate imaging method by temporal multiplexing the sub-region of the image sensor. In the system, a dual-axis scanning galvanometer is localized at the relay pupil plane and a high quality scan lens is utilized to form an image-side telecentric path. Following this path can overcome bandwidth waste in the conventional exposure and readout mode, and maintain other performances of image sensors. As a result, the sCMOS camera has performed 432fps over 820 x 700 pixel arrays to record the dynamic heartbeat of zebrafish larvae. Abstract:As an indispensable tool to observe the microcosmic structures and dynamics, wide-field fluorescence microscopy (WFM) has been widely applied in biological and medical areas, but the low imaging speed hinders its applications in high-speed fluorescent dynamics due to the limited frame rate of the camera. Here, we develop a high-speed compressive wide-field fluorescence microscopy (CWFM) to break the imaging speed limitation of conventional WFM. In our CWFM method, a coded aperture temporal compressive imaging technique is introduced into conventional WFM system to accelerate the imaging speed by reconstructing multiple images from every compressed image. An iterative algorithm with alternant deep denoisers of FFDnet and FastDVDnet is designed to reconstruct high-quality sequential images from every compressed image through spatial denoising and temporal constraining. The high-speed imaging ability of CWFM is verified by measuring the movement of fluorescence beads on a slide, and an imaging speed of 2000 Hz is experimentally obtained with an ordinary CMOS camera of 200 Hz, the imaging speed is increased by an order of magnitude. Using our high-speed CWFM system, we successfully observe the hydrodynamics by detecting the flow of fluorescence beads in the water across a corner of microchannel. This technique provides a well-established tool for detecting the high-speed fluid and biological dynamic scene, especially in microflow and cell tracking.

Abstract:Various super-resolution microscopy techniques have been presented to explore fine structures of biological specimens. However, the super-resolution capability is often achieved at the expense of reducing imaging speed by either point scanning or multiframe computation. The contradiction between spatial resolution and imaging speed seriously hampers the observation of high-speed dynamics of fine structures. To overcome this contradiction, here we propose and demonstrate a temporal compressive super-resolution microscopy (TCSRM) technique. This technique is to merge an enhanced temporal compressive microscopy and a deep-learning-based super-resolution image reconstruction, where the enhanced temporal compres- sive microscopy is utilized to improve the imaging speed, and the deep-learning-based super-resolution image reconstruction is used to realize the resolution enhancement. The high-speed super-resolution imaging ability of TCSRM with a frame rate of 1200 frames per second (fps) and spatial resolution of 100 nm is experimentally demonstrated by capturing the flowing fluorescent beads in microfluidic chip. Given the outstanding imaging performance with high-speed super-resolution, TCSRM provides a desired tool for the studies of high-speed dynamical behaviors in fine structures, especially in the biomedical field.
Virtual Frame Technique: Ultrafast Imaging with Any Camera

Abstract:Many phenomena of interest in nature and industry occur rapidly and are difficult and cost-prohibitive to visualize properly without specialized cameras. Here we describe in detail the Virtual Frame Technique (VFT), a simple, useful, and accessible form of compressed sensing that increases the frame acquisition rate of any camera by several orders of magnitude by leveraging its dynamic range. VFT is a powerful tool for capturing rapid phenomenon where the dynamics facilitate a transition between two states, and are thus binary. The advantages of VFT are demonstrated by examining such dynamics in five physical processes at unprecedented rates and spatial resolution: fracture of an elastic solid, wetting of a solid surface, rapid fingerprint reading, peeling of adhesive tape, and impact of an elastic hemisphere on a hard surface. We show that the performance of the VFT exceeds that of any commercial high speed camera not only in rate of imaging but also in field of view, achieving a 65MHz frame rate at 4MPx resolution. Finally, we discuss the performance of the VFT with several commercially available conventional and high-speed cameras. In principle, modern cell phones can achieve imaging rates of over a million frames per second using the VFT.

25,000 fps Computational Ghost Imaging with Ultrafast Structured Illumination

Abstract:Computational ghost imaging, as an alternative photoelectric imaging technology, uses a single-pixel detector with no spatial resolution to capture information and reconstruct the image of a scene. Due to its essentially temporal measurement manner, improving the image frame rate is always a major concern in the research of computational ghost imaging technology. By taking advantage of the fast switching time of LED, an LED array was developed to provide a structured illumination light source in our work, which significantly improves the structured illumination rate in the computational ghost imaging system. The design of the LED array driver circuit presented in this work makes full use of the LED switching time and achieves a pattern displaying rate of 12.5 MHz. Continuous images with 32 × 32 pixel resolution are reconstructed at a frame rate of 25,000 fps, which is approximately 500 times faster than what a universally used digital micromirror device can achieve. The LED array presented in this work can potentially be applied to other techniques requiring high-speed structured illumination, such as fringe 3D profiling and array-based LIFI.

Tracking and fast imaging of a moving object via Fourier modulation

Abstract:Recently, several single-pixel imaging (SPI) schemes have emerged for imaging fast-moving objects and have shown dramatic results. However, fast image reconstruction of a moving object with high quality is still challenging for SPI, thereby limiting its practical application. In this paper, we present a simultaneous tracking and imaging method that incorporates position encoding and spatial information encoding through Fourier patterns. The utilization of Fourier patterns with specific spatial frequencies ensures robust and accurate object localization. By exploiting the properties of the Fourier transforms, our method achieves a remarkable reduction in time complexity while significantly enhancing image quality. Furthermore, we introduce an optimized sampling strategy specifically designed for small moving objects, significantly reducing the required dwell time for imaging. The proposed method provides a practical solution for real-time tracking, imaging, and edge detection of moving objects, underscoring its considerable potential for diverse applications.

Abstract:The frame frequency matching of the Digital Micro-mirror Device (DMD), the acousto-optic modulator (AOM) and high-speed camera can realize the holographic high-speed reading under the reference light changing scene, which greatly improves the data reading speed. In this work, the frame frequency matching to achieve high-speed reading is related to four factors: the resolution and exposure time of the high-speed camera, the duty ratio of AOM, and the phase difference between the signals sent by AOM and DMD. Through the research of the exposure time and resolution of high-speed cameras, the maximum synchronous frame rate of DMD and high-speed cameras can achieve 18KHZ. By synchronizing the frame frequency of both DMD and AOM trigger signals with the signal generator, controlling the duty ratio of AOM and the phase difference of the trigger signals sent to DMD and AOM can enable the high-speed camera to read the reproduction data page near the data recording point, avoiding the waste of storage space. The analysis of the experimental results shows that the camera can read clear information under the conditions of the incident optical power density is 32μw, the AOM duty ratio is larger than 10%, and the phase difference between AOM and DMD is 26°. The realization of DMD, high-speed camera and AOM frequency matching will effectively ensure the reading speed and decoding accuracy of holographic stored data

Abstract:Ultrafast imaging is a powerful tool for studying space-time dynamics in photonic material, plasma physics, living cells, and neural activity. Pushing the imaging speed to the quantum limit could reveal extraordinary scenes about the questionable quantization of life and intelligence, or the wave-particle duality of light. However, previous designs of ultrafast photography are intrinsically limited by framing speed. Here, we introduce a new technique based on a multiple non-collinear optical parametric amplifier principle (MOPA), which readily push the frame rate into the area of ten trillion frames per second with higher spatial resolution than 30 line pairs per millimeter. The MOPA imaging is applied to record the femtosecond early evolution of laser-induced plasma grating in air for the first time. Our approach avoids the intrinsic limitations of previous methods, thus can be potentially optimized for higher speed and resolution, opening the way of approaching quantum limits to test the fundamentals.

Abstract:We present temporal compressive holographic microscopy to achieve high-speed phase imaging with a low-speed camera. In this method, alternating deep denoising network and total variation denoiser are combined into a plug-and-play framework to reconstruct ten high-speed holographic frames from a single-shot measurement. Therefore, we can observe a 500 frame per second (fps) holographic scene when the camera works at 50 fps. This technique provides an effective tool to detect dynamic phase change scenes.
