Abstract:This paper reports a new space-time spectral algorithm for obtaining an approximate solution for the space-time fractional Burger’s equation (FBE) based on spectral shifted Legendre collocation (SLC) method in combination with the shifted Lagendre operational matrix of fractional derivatives. The fractional derivatives are described in the Caputo sense. We propose a spectral shifted Legendre collocation method in both temporal and spatial discretizations for the space-time FBE. The main characteristic behind this approach is that it reduces such problem to those of solving a system of nonlinear algebraic equations which can then be solved using Newtons iterative method. Numerical results with comparisons are given to confirm the reliability of the proposed method for FBE

Abstract:Introduction & Objectives : Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness. Abundant studies have been done around the topic. This study aims to identify research hotspot of DR during the last five years. Methods : Document search in the Scopus database was done using the term “diabetic retinopathy” in Title, Abstracts, and Author Keywords. We included only articles written in English published between 2018 and 2022. The dataset were analyzed using VOSviewer to conduct bibliometric analysis, such as citation analysis of sources and institutions, co-authorship analysis of countries, and co- occurrence analysis of author keywords. Results : A total of 8.377 articles on DR were retrieved. Number of articles in DR had been increasing steadily overtime. China had the most publications with over 2.000 articles, while United States had the most international collaboration. The most active institution was Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Ocular Diseases. Scientific Reports was the most prolific journal in DR research. Co- occurrence analysis of author keywords formed 5 clusters; DR management, risk factors for DR, examination for DR, pathogenesis of DR, and diagnostic method for DR. Conclusion : This study revealed research trends on diabetic retinopathy research for the last five years. It may provide information for researchers to identify potential collaborator and give better insight on DR research topics

Abstract:Purpose To comprehensively analyze and discuss the publications on machine learning (ML) in diabetic retinopathy (DR) following a bibliometric approach. Methods The global publications on ML in DR from 2011 to 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. We analyzed the publication and citation trend over time and identified highly-cited articles, prolific countries, institutions, journals and the most relevant research domains. VOSviewer and Wordcloud are used to visualize the mainstream research topics and evolution of subtopics in the form of co-occurrence maps of keywords. Results By analyzing a total of 1147 relevant publications, this study found a rapid increase in the number of annual publications, with an average growth rate of 42.68%. India and China were the most productive countries. IEEE Access was the most productive journal in this field. In addition, some notable common points were found in the highly-cited articles. The keywords analysis showed that “diabetic retinopathy”, “classification”, and “fundus images” were the most frequent keywords for the entire period, as automatic diagnosis of DR was always the mainstream topic in the relevant field. The evolution of keywords highlighted some breakthroughs, including “deep learning” and “optical coherence tomography”, indicating the advance in technologies and changes in the research attention. Conclusions As new research topics have emerged and evolved, studies are becoming increasingly diverse and extensive. Multiple modalities of medical data, new ML techniques and constantly optimized algorithms are the future trends in this multidisciplinary field.

Abstract:Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) are microvascular complications of diabetes that share a similar pathogenesis and clinical relevance. The study aimed to visually analyze the research status and development trend of the relationship between DN and DR by means of bibliometrics and knowledge mapping. Methods: Publications were collected from the Science Citation Index-Expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection between 2000 and 2021. CiteSpace, Alluvial Generator, and Microsoft Excel were used to analyze and present the data. Results: A total of 3,348 publications were retrieved and 3,285 were included in the analysis after deduplication. The publications demonstrated an annually increasing trend. The results of the collaborative network analysis showed that the United States, Steno Diabetes Center, and Tien Y. Wong were the most influential country, institution and author, in this field of research, respectively. The analysis of references and keywords showed that the pathogenesis of DN and DR and their relationship with cardiovascular disease are research hotspots. The clinical relevance and drug therapy for DN and DR will become frontiers of future research in this field. Conclusion: This study is the first to visualize the correlation between DN and DR using a bibliometric approach. This study provides a reference of research trends for scholars.

Abstract:Background: Artificial intelligence (AI), which has been used to diagnose diabetic retinopathy (DR), may impact future medical and ophthalmic practices. Therefore, this study explored AI's general applications and research frontiers in the detection and gradation of DR. Methods: Citation data were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection database (WoSCC) to assess the application of AI in diagnosing DR in the literature published from January 1, 2012, to June 30, 2022. These data were processed by CiteSpace 6.1.R3 software. Results: Overall, 858 publications from 77 countries and regions were examined, with the United States considered the leading country in this domain. The largest cluster labeled "automated detection" was employed in the generating stage from 2007 to 2014. The burst keywords from 2020 to 2022 were artificial intelligence and transfer learning. Conclusion: Initial research focused on the study of intelligent algorithms used to localize or recognize lesions on fundus images to assist in diagnosing DR. Presently, the focus of research has changed from upgrading the accuracy and efficiency of DR lesion detection and classification to research on DR diagnostic systems. However, further studies on DR and computer engineering are required.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To analyse drug consumption in the first years of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in France, the Netherlands, and Norway, in a longitudinal study between 1991 and 1993. PATIENTS AND METHODS The EURIDISS cohort followed up over three years included 695 RA subjects with less than 5 years disease duration. Clinical and biological parameters, drug consumption according to ATC classification, and use of local treatment were recorded. RESULTS In the Netherlands consumption of second-line treatment occurred early on, and remained constant over time. In France, it was consumed by half of the subjects and decreased during follow-up (p<0.001). In Norway, 50% of the subjects were on second-line treatment at the outset. NSAIDs rather than corticoids were the most widely consumed. Patients underwent frequently local treatments with decrease frequency of infiltrations over time (p<0.001). CONCLUSION Second-line treatments were used in the first years of disease development, following varying sequences in the different countries.

Abstract:Background/Aims: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening using artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved significantly over the past decade. This study aimed to analyze research trends, developments, and patterns in AI-based fundus image DR screening from 2014 to 2024 through bibliometric analysis. Methods: The study analyzed 1,172 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection database using CiteSpace and Microsoft Excel. The analysis included publication trends, citation patterns, institutional collaborations, and keyword emergence analysis. Results: Publications showed consistent growth from 2014-2022, with a peak in 2021. India (26%), China (20.05%), and USA (9.98%) dominated research output. IEEE ACCESS was the leading publication venue with 44 articles. Research evolved from traditional image processing to deep learning approaches, with recent emphasis on multimodal AI models. The analysis identified three distinct phases: CNN-based systems (2014-2020), Vision Transformers and innovative learning paradigms (2020-2022), and large foundation models (2022-2024). Conclusion: The field shows mature development in traditional AI approaches while transitioning toward multimodal learning technologies. Future directions indicate increased focus on telemedicine integration, innovative AI algorithms, and real-world implementation.

Abstract:Diabetic macular edema (DME) represents a critical public health issue due to its role in visual impairment among patients with diabetes. [ 1–3 ] Research indicates that over two-thirds of patients with real-world DME experience a visual acuity of less than 0.5, significantly affecting their visual health. [ 4 , 5 ] Although significant strides have been made in understanding DME's epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment options, discrepancies and gaps in current research persist. For instance, while the effectiveness of anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (anti-VEGF) treatments is well-documented, responses vary among individuals, highlighting the need for alternative strategies and a deeper understanding of disease mechanisms. This study aims to provide a comprehensive bibliometric analysis, encompassing the extensive scope of DME research to elucidate trends, identify significant contributions, and outline evolving frontiers within this field.

Visualization Analysis of Research Hotspots and Trends in the Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy with Traditional Chinese Medicine

Abstract:: This paper aims to make a systematic visualization analysis on literature relating to the treatment of diabetic retinopathy (DR) with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and explore the research hotspots and frontier trends in this field, thus providing references for future research. All literature relating to this field, which were published between the time when the databases were released and August 29th 2022, was retrieved from databases such as China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Science and Technology Journal Database(VIP), Wanfang Database and Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC).Citespace software was used for visualization analyses on co-occurrence, clustering and citation burst of the keywords of papers published, and the category, authors, institutions, keywords of the papers as well as the research hotspots in the field. A total of 507 Chinese articles and 765 English papers in this field were obtained. Through analysis, it was found that there were 24 core authors in Chinese articles and only one in English articles. Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine each published 12 Chinese papers in the field, the most Chinese papers that an institution had ever published, while Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences published 22 English papers, the most English papers an institution had ever published. The co-occurrence analyses for keywords showed that 362 keywords were captured from Chinese articles, which included "traditional Chinese medicine" "review" and "deficiency of both Qi and Yin", etc. And a total of 583 keywords were captured from English articles, which focused on "oxidative stress" "medicinal plant" and "cell", etc. By clustering the keywords, seven clustering labels were formed using keywords identified from Chinese articles, including "#0 diabetic retinopathy" "#1 traditional Chinese medicine" and "#2 laser photocoagulation". And nine clustering tags were formed using keywords from English articles, including "# 0 diabetes mellitus", "# 1 diabetes retina" and "# 2 antioxidant activity". The citation burst analysis of keywords from Chinese papers showed that Chinese herbal drug was the keywords with the longest duration of research focus, and together with laser photocoagulation, constituted the topics in the earliest research of the field. While in English paper analysis, glycemic control was a topic with the longest research duration, and constituent was the subject in the earliest research of the field. Conclusions are as follows, the number of literature in the field of TCM treatment for DR has increased year on year. However, cooperation and interactions between researchers and research institutions didn’t look promising over the years, which apparently should be enhanced. Clinical treatments for DR and their mechanism has been the hotspots in this research field, with mechanism research, drug therapies and DR mortality as the trending research directions.

Abstract:Background: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is the main cause of irreversible vision loss in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), resulting in a certain burden to patients and society. With the increasing incidence of DME, more and more researchers are focusing on it. Methods: The papers related to DME between 2012 and 2022 from the Web of Science core Collection were searched in this study. Based on CiteSpace and VOS viewer, these publications were analyzed in terms of spatiotemporal distribution, author distribution, subject classification, topic distribution, and citations. Results: A total of 5165 publications on DME were included. The results showed that the research on DME is on a steady growth trend. The country with the highest number of published documents was the US. Wong Tien Yin from Tsinghua University was the author with the most published articles. The journal of Retina, the Journal of Retinal and Vitreous Diseases had a large number of publications. The article "Mechanisms of macular edema: Beyond the surface" was the highly cited literature and "Aflibercept, bevacizumab, or ranibizumab for diabetic macular edema" had the highest co-citation frequency. The treatment, diagnosis, pathogenesis, as well as etiology and epidemiological investigation of DME, have been the current research direction. Deep learning has been widely used in the medical field for its strong feature representation ability. Conclusions: The study revealed the important authoritative literature, journals, institutions, scholars, countries, research hotspots, and development trends in in the field of DME. This indicates that communication and cooperation between disciplines, universities, and countries are crucial. It can advance research in DME and even ophthalmology.

Global hotspots and trends in diabetic peripheral neuropathy research from 2011 to 2023

Abstract:Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a prevalent disease, and the relevant literature has been increasingly investigated over the past years. Consequently, it is imperative to conduct a scientific and comprehensive DPN research field bibliometric analysis. This study aims to summarize and visualize the literature distribution laws, the research hotspots, and the development trends in DPN using bibliometric methods. We searched all relevant documents published from 2011 to 2023 in the Web of Science Core Collection. Bibliometric analysis and network visualization were performed using VOSviewer, R-bibliometrix, and CiteSpace tools, focusing on countries, institutions, authors, journals, highly cited papers, references, and keywords. This study included a total of 2708 documents. The annual number of publications in the field has notably increased. China, the USA, and the UK take on critical significance in DPN research. The University of Manchester in the UK has the highest number of publications (109). Malik has the most publications (86). Tesfaye literature has been most frequently cited by scholars of DPN research. The Journal of Diabetes and its Complications and Frontiers in Endocrinology have the most publications (45 each). Diabetes Care stands out with the highest impact factor (16.200), number of citations (2516), and H-index (27) among the number of publications top 10 journals. The paper "Colloca, L. et al Neuropathic pain. Nature Reviews Disease Primers. 2017, 3 (1):1-19" has the highest number of citations (1224 times). The most critical co-cited reference is "Tesfaye S, 2010, DIABETES CARE, V33, P2285" (cited 408 times). Keywords like "type 2 diabetes," "diagnosis," "association," "retinopathy," "risk factors," "progression," "corneal confocal microscopy," "nephropathy," "balance," "microvascular complications," "inflammation," "disease," and "insulin resistance" represent the recent research hotspots. The development, research hotspots, and future trends of the global DPN domain from 2011 to 2023 were summarized and visualized in this study. This study can present more insights into the general situation of DPN research and provide a useful reference for clinical decision-making and directions of subsequent research.

Abstract:Introduction: Oxidative stress has been identified as a major contributor to the pathogenesis of DR, and many diagnostic and therapeutic strategies have been developed to target oxidative stress. Our aim was to understand the contribution of the country of origin of the publication, the institution, the authors, and the collaborative relationship between them. Methods: We performed a bibliometric analysis to summarize and explore the research hotspots and trends of oxidative stress in the DR. Results: We observe an upward trend in the number of posts on related topics from year to year. Expanding on this, Queens University Belfast is the most influential research institution. Current research hotspots and trends focus on the mechanism of autophagy and NLRP3 inflammasome's role in oxidative stress in DR. Discussion: We conducted a multi-dimensional analysis of the research status of oxidative stress in diabetic retinopathy through bibliometric analysis, and proposed possible future research trends and hotspots.

Abstract:Diabetes is a global public health disease projected to affect 642 million adults by 2040, with about 75% residing in low- and middle-income countries. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) affects 1 in 3 people with diabetes and remains the leading cause of blindness in working-aged adults. There are 3 broad strategic imperatives to prevent blindness caused by DR. Primary prevention requires preventing or delaying the onset of DR in those with diabetes by systems-level lifestyle modifications such as increasing physical activity or dietary modifications, pharmacological interventions for glycaemic and blood pressure control, and systematic screening for the onset of DR. Secondary prevention requires preventing the progression of DR in patients with DR by continuing systemic risk factor control, regular screening to monitor for the progression of mild DR to vision-threatening stages, and the development and implementation of evidence-based guidelines for managing DR. In this aspect, telemedicine-based DR screening incorporating artificial intelligence technology has the potential to facilitate more widespread and cost-effective screening, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Tertiary prevention of DR blindness has been the main focus of the clinical ophthalmology community, classically based on laser photocoagulation treatment and ocular surgery but with an increasing use of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) for vision-threatening DR. Evidence from serial epidemiological studies shows blindness due to DR has declined in high-income countries (e.g., the USA and UK) due to coordinated public health education efforts, increased awareness, early detection by DR screening, sustained systemic risk factor control, and the availability of effective tertiary level treatment. However, the progress made in reducing DR blindness in high-income countries may be overwhelmed by the increasing numbers of patients with diabetes and DR in low- and middle-income countries (e.g., China, India, Indonesia, etc.). Thus, to tackle DR at a global level, a paradigm shift in strategic focus from tertiary towards secondary and primary prevention measures with a multi-pronged whole-of-society approach at regional and national levels is urgently needed.Ophthalmologica

Abstract:Background: In order to understand the research hotspots and trends in the field of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), our study analyzed the relevant publications from 2003 to 2022 by using bibliometric analysis. Methods: The Citespace 6.2.R3 system was used to analyze the publications collected from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. Results: In total, 4,957 publications were included in this study. From 2003 to 2022, the number of publications gradually increased and peaked in 2022. The United States was the country with the most publications, while Harvard University was the most productive institution. The top co-cited journal PEDIATRICS is published by the United States. Author analysis showed that Hellström A was the author with the most publications, while Good WV was the top co-cited author. The co-citation analysis of references showed seven major clusters: genetic polymorphism, neurodevelopmental outcome, threshold retinopathy, oxygen-induced retinopathy, low birth weight infant, prematurity diagnosis cluster and artificial intelligence (AI). For the citation burst analysis, there remained seven keywords in their burst phases until 2022, including ranibizumab, validation, trends, type 1 retinopathy, preterm, deep learning and artificial intelligence. Conclusion: Intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy and AI-assisted clinical decision-making were two major topics of ROP research, which may still be the research trends in the coming years.

Abstract:Background: Patients with retinal diseases may exhibit serious complications that cause severe visual impairment owing to a lack of awareness of retinal diseases and limited medical resources. Understanding how artificial intelligence (AI) is used to make predictions and perform relevant analyses is a very active area of research on retinal diseases. In this study, the relevant Science Citation Index (SCI) literature on the AI of retinal diseases published from 2012 to 2021 was integrated and analyzed. Objective: The aim of this study was to gain insights into the overall application of AI technology to the research of retinal diseases from set time and space dimensions. Methods: Citation data downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection database for AI in retinal disease publications from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2021, were considered for this analysis. Information retrieval was analyzed using the online analysis platforms of literature metrology: Bibliometrc, CiteSpace V, and VOSviewer. Results: A total of 197 institutions from 86 countries contributed to relevant publications; China had the largest number and researchers from University College London had the highest H-index. The reference clusters of SCI papers were clustered into 12 categories. "Deep learning" was the cluster with the widest range of cocited references. The burst keywords represented the research frontiers in 2018-2021, which were "eye disease" and "enhancement." Conclusions: This study provides a systematic analysis method on the literature regarding AI in retinal diseases. Bibliometric analysis enabled obtaining results that were objective and comprehensive. In the future, high-quality retinal image–forming AI technology with strong stability and clinical applicability will continue to be encouraged.

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the major ocular complication of diabetes mellitus, and is a problem with significant global health impact. Major advances in diagnostics, technology and treatment have already revolutionized how we manage DR in the early part of the 21 st century. For example, the accessibility of imaging with optical coherence tomography, and the development of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment are just some of the landmark developments that have shaped the DR landscape over the last few decades. Yet, there are still more exciting advances being made. Looking forward to 2030, many of these ongoing developments are likely to further transform the field. First, epidemiologic projections show that the global burden of DR is not only increasing, but also shifting from high-income countries towards middle- and low-income areas. Second, better understanding of disease pathophysiology is placing greater emphasis on retinal neural dysfunction and non-vascular aspects of diabetic retinal disease. Third, a wealth of information is becoming available from newer imaging modalities such as widefield imaging systems and optical coherence tomography angiography. Fourth, artificial intelligence for screening, diagnosis and prognostication of DR will become increasingly accessible and important. Fifth, new pharmacologic agents targeting other non-VEGF-driven pathways, and novel therapeutic strategies such as gene therapy are being developed for DR. Finally, the classification system for diabetic retinal disease will need to be continually updated to keep pace with new developments. In this article, we discuss these major trends in DR that we expect to see in 2030 and beyond.

Abstract:The Advertising Standards Authority has ruled against a large tobacco firm over an advertisement that it ran last year about standardised packaging of tobacco products. The authority issued a ruling1 on 30 July that an advertisement run by Gallaher, the UK trading company of Japan Tobacco International, which opposed the introduction of standardised packaging of tobacco products, was misleading and must not be published again. Anti-tobacco campaigners and charities welcomed the ruling, saying that the advertisement in question was part of a campaign that was “one of the most blatantly dishonest in recent UK advertising history.” Gallaher, however, said that it disagreed strongly with the authority’s decision and had submitted a formal request to Hayden Phillips, the independent reviewer of the authority’s adjudications, for the decision to be reconsidered. Current research and future strategies for the management of vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy

Abstract:Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major ocular complication of diabetes and the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment, particularly among adults of working-age adults. Although the medical and economic burden of DR is significant and its global prevalence is expected to increase, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, a large portion of vision loss caused by DR remains preventable through early detection and timely intervention. This perspective reviewed the latest developments in research and innovation in three areas, first novel biomarkers (including advanced imaging modalities, serum biomarkers, and artificial intelligence technology) to predict the incidence and progression of DR, second, screening and early detection of referable DR and vision-threatening DR (VTDR), and finally, novel therapeutic strategies for VTDR, including diabetic macular oedema (DME), with the goal of reducing diabetic blindness.
