Abstract:Solar hydrobromic acid (HBr) splitting using perovskite photocatalysts provides an attractive avenue to store solar energy into hydrogen (H2) and bromine (Br2), while an efficient photocatalytic system is still demanded. As for the semiconductor photocatalyst, formamidinium perovskites show some superiorities in structural stability, light adsorption and charge dynamics compared to their methylammonium counterparts, which are fitter for the photocatalysis process. Herein, the composite of formamidinium lead bromide perovskite (FAPbBr3) with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is prepared using a facile photoreduction method. Under simulated sunlight irradiation (AM1.5G, 100 mW cm-2), this FAPbBr3/rGO composite (100 mg) demonstrates a noteworthy enhancement in photocatalytic H2 evolution activity of 386.7 μmol h-1, and it exhibits a notable stability with no significant decrease after 50 h of repeated tests. The single particle PL (photoluminescence) microscope is employed to study the charge dynamics, revealing that rGO in the composite effectively promotes the carrier separation. This work provides a highly efficient and stable photocatalyst for HBr splitting, and offers an effective modification strategy on lead bromide perovskites.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskites have demonstrated great potential in photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications. Despite of their high efficiency, the lead toxicity issue could limit their applications in photocatalysis. Herein, lead-free double perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 (CABB) combined with reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was facilely synthesized (donated as CABB/RGO) and applied for H2 evolution in saturated HBr aqueous solution. The CABB/RGO composite with optimal RGO loadings exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity than bare CABB particles, which could be ascribled to the facilitated charge separation and transfer by RGO. As high as 489 μmol g−1 H2 can be produced within 10 h under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm, 300 W Xe lamp) using CABB/RGO as photocatalyst. Furthermore, the champion photocatalyst of CABB/2.5%RGO showed high stability for 120 h continuous photocatalytic H2 evolution. This study suggests Cs2AgBiBr6-based perovskite are promising candidate for photocatalytic hydrogen generation.
Selective Valorization of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Diformylfuran Using Atmospheric O 2 and MAPbBr 3 Perovskite under Visible Light

Abstract:Selective production of value-added platform chemicals from renewable biomass feedstocks and their derivatives has attracted tremendous attention with high potential in addressing global problems of energy and sustainability. In this work, a lead-halide perovskite (MAPbBr3, MA = methylammonium) is utilized as a photocatalyst for selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) using atmospheric O2 upon visible-light irradiation. Under minimally optimized conditions, the photocatalytic conversion of HMF in acetonitrile solvent reaches 100% with a DFF selectivity of over 90%, achieving an overall furanic carbon yield of over 96%. A detailed catalytic mechanism was proposed based on various spectroscopic and experimental results, revealing that the atmospheric O2, photogenerated electrons (e–), holes (h+), •O2–, and 1O2 species together play crucial roles in the effective and selective photo-oxidation of HMF to DFF. Abstract:Excessive combustion of traditional fossil fuels causes seriously global warming (Carbon dioxide, CO2) and energy crisis. Photocatalytic CO2 conversion to fuels has emerged as one of the most effective strategies. Herein, an environmentally friendly nanocomposite based on lead-free Cs2AgBiBr6 (CABB) perovskite nanocrystals and the UiO-66 metal–organic framework was fabricated by a facile ultrasonic process for efficient CO2 photoreduction. The obtained CABB/UiO-66 consisted of uniform CABB nanocrystals (10–12 nm) attached to the UiO-66 surface and exhibited a high surface area (1031 m2/g). The composite displayed enhanced light-harvesting capacity than the individual components and provided sufficient active sites for promoting photocatalytic activity. A typical Z-scheme heterostructure between the CABB and UiO-66 was realized by forming an inner electric field, leading to the occurrence of efficient excited state charge transfer. The efficient charge transfer of CABB/UiO-66 inspired its use as an active photocatalyst for the reduction of CO2 with significantly improved photocatalytic activity against its individual components. Specifically, CABB/UiO-66 exhibited 38 and 40-fold improvement in catalytic activity compared to respective CABB and UiO-66 in terms of the total yield of CO, CH4, and C2H6. Moreover, the nanocomposite displayed excellent activity towards the oxidative photocatalytic degradation of aqueous environmental contaminant rhodamine B. We believe that this work provides a guide for designing lead-free perovskite-based renewable catalysts and offers new opportunities for the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:Photocatalyic CO2 in the atmosphere to fuels and value-added chemicals has been a promising artificial carbon cycle to combat the global climate crisis, the accomplishment of which however is strongly reliant on efficient catalysts, i.e. high selectivity and conversion rate, robustness, etc. In this work, we provided our solution by fabricating a lead-free perovskite Cs3Bi2Br9/MOF 525 Co structure, where narrow band Cs3Bi2Br9 QDs for efficient light trapping and selective CO2 adsorption, coupling with MOF to form a Cs3Bi2Br9/MOF 525 Co type-II heterojunction for efficient electron-hole separation. By this way, three crucial steps of light absorption, carrier transportation and highly selective surface catalysis are fully taken into account and the photocatalyst showed high CO selectivity of 99.5% and an outstanding electron consumption rate of 124.8 μmol g-1 h-1 (61.2 μmol g-1 h-1 for CO, and 0.3 μmol g-1 h-1 for CH4) superior to previous reports. Femtosecond transient absorption measurements disclosed ultrafast electron transfer of 136 ps from Cs3Bi2Br9 to MOF 525 Co within the heterojunction, enabling the efficient charge separation with a long carrier time over ns time scale; while in situ infrared measurements unravelled the stronger CO2 adsorption, efficient conversion to *COOH intermediates and prompt CO desorption of the photocatalyst. The work thus elucidated the underlying mechanism accounting for the high product selectivity, providing guidelines for design efficient catalysts from the perspective of dynamics and surface reaction activity.

Abstract:Nature is capable of storing solar energy in chemical bonds via photosynthesis through a series of C–C, C–O and C–N bond-forming reactions starting from CO2 and light. Direct capture of solar energy for organic synthesis is a promising approach. Lead (Pb)-halide perovskite solar cells reach 24.2% power conversion efficiency, rendering perovskite a unique type material for solar energy capture. We argue that photophysical properties of perovskites already proved for photovoltaics, also should be of interest in photoredox organic synthesis. Because the key aspects of these two applications are both relying on charge separation and transfer. Here we demonstrated that perovskites nanocrystals are exceptional candidates as photocatalysts for fundamental organic reactions, for example C–C, C–N and C–O bond-formations. Stability of CsPbBr3 in organic solvents and ease-of-tuning their bandedges garner perovskite a wider scope of organic substrate activations. Our low-cost, easy-to-process, highly-efficient, air-tolerant and bandedge-tunable perovskites may bring new breakthrough in organic chemistry.

Abstract:In this study, α-Fe2O3/rGO was smoothly synthesized by a one-step method and employed to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of Bisphenol A (BPA) under sunlight. During the degradation experiment, the degradation rates of BPA for PS, α-Fe2O3/8% rGO, and α-Fe2O3/8% rGO/PS were 6.6%, 47.6%, and 99.1%, respectively, indicating that the introduction of α-Fe2O3/rGO and PS significantly enhanced the photocatalytic efficiency because that photocatalytic process and PS activation coupling system not only inhibited the recombination of photo-induced carrier pairs, but also reduced the energy consumption of PS activation. Moreover, electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) and trapping experiments were utilized to explore the active species generated during the reaction. The results showed that •OH and •SO4 2- were the principal oxidative species in this reaction system. These results showed that Fe-loaded rGO has great potential for activating PS to decompose pollutants in water.

Photo‐ and Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction Based on Stable Lead‐Free Perovskite Cs2PdBr6

Abstract:All‐inorganic lead‐free palladium (Pd) halogen perovskites with prominent optoelectronic properties provide admirable potential for selective photo‐ and electroreduction of CO2. But it remains unachieved for effectively converting the CO2 to CO with high selectivity on Pd‐based perovskites driven by solar light or electricity. Herein, high‐quality Cs2PdBr6 microcrystals and nanocrystals were synthesized through a facile antisolvent method. Among all the reported pure‐phase perovskites, the Cs2PdBr6 nanocrystals synthesized at 50 °C performed the highest effectiveness on CO2 to CO conversion generating 73.8 μmol g−1 of CO yield with 100% selectivity under visible light illumination (λ > 420 nm) for 3 h. Meanwhile, for the first time, we report a new application of lead‐free perovskites, in which they are applied to electrocatalysis of CO2 reduction reaction. Noticeably, they showed significant electrocatalytic activity (Faradaic yield: 78% for CO) and operation stability (10 h). And the surface reaction intermediates were dynamically monitored and precisely unraveled according to the in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra investigation. In combination with the density functional theory calculation, the reaction mechanism and pathways were revealed. This work not only provides significant strategies to enhance the photocatalytic performance of perovskites, but also shows excellent potential for their application in electrocatalysis.
Lamellar insert SnS2 anchored on BiOBr for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutant under visible-light

Abstract:Constructing efficient and green photocatalysts to remove organic pollutants is of great significance to environmental purification. We used the facile one-pot hydrothermal method to couple lamellar SnS2 with RGO and BiOBr to synthesize a novel Z-scheme SnS2/RGO/BiOBr ternary photocatalyst. Compared with the single component, the obtained ternary composite material has enhanced photodegradation activity.It can be concluded that the 0.2SnS2/RGO/BiOBr composite exhibits the best performence,99.15% methylene blue removed after 15 min irradiation,reaching a 38.9% improvement compared to the pure BiOBr. Besides, the degradation rate of norfloxacin reached 81.6%. The excellent photocatalytic properties were studied by photoluminescence spectroscopy, and a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism appropriate for SnS2/RGO/BiOBr composite was proposed according to the results of UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and free radical capture experiments, in which RGO acted as an electron transfer medium to accelerate the transfer of photogenerated electrons between SnS2 and BiOBr, thereby effectively limiting the recombination of photogenerated carriers.

Abstract:Artificial photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into value-added and renewable fuels has been recognized as a promising approach for solving environmental problems and energy crisis. Achieving this goal, developing a photocatalyst to simultaneously manifest high efficiency, selectivity, and durability is urgent need. Herein, one of all-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite (viz. Cs4PbBr6) with hole-in-microdisk structure hybridized with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is reported as an effective photocatalyst for reducing of CO2. Our results show that Cs4PbBr6/rGO exhibited high efficiency, selectivity, and durability of CO2 reduction capacity to CO, catalyzing at a rate of 11.4 μmol g-1h-1 with a maintaining stability of 60 h. Residual oxygen impurities as defects in the rGO sheets are demonstrated for facilitating CO2 activation and reduction capacity to CO. This finding provides a facile pathway for designing high performance perovskite photocatalyst with high selectivity and durability with the aid of defects engineering.

Abstract:In order to obtain photocatalyst with high performance for the removal of indoor gaseous formaldehyde (HCHO), effective titanium dioxide/reduced graphene oxide (TiO2/rGO) composite was synthesized by a simple and mild one-step water bath method. The properties of the as-prepared TiO2/rGO composite were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherm and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. In this work, Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used to avoid the reunion of rGO sheets during the preparation process. The obtained 1-PVP-TiO2/2-rGO composite exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance on low concentration gaseous HCHO removal at the optimal addition of PVP and GO. It could eliminate 72% of HCHO in 9 h, which is 3.5 times higher than bare TiO2. The TEM results exhibited that the stacking of rGO sheets could be well-controlled and P25 nanoparticles were anchored on the surface of rGO with good dispersion. The enhancement should be attributed to the inhibition on the agglomeration of rGO sheets after the reduction reaction and more TiO2 nanoparticles were loaded on the rGO nanosheets. Moreover, the produced chemical combination between the TiO2 nanoparticles and rGO sheets could greatly promote the electronic transmission. The energy-saving preparation method and outstanding photocatalytic performance could make the catalyst more promising for indoor air purification.

Broad Spectral Response FeOOH/BiO2−x Photocatalyst with Efficient Charge Transfer for Enhanced Photo-Fenton Synergistic Catalytic Activity

Abstract:In this work, to promote the separation of photogenerated carriers, prevent the catalyst from photo-corrosion, and improve the photo-Fenton synergistic degradation of organic pollutants, the coating structure of FeOOH/BiO2−x rich in oxygen vacancies was successfully synthesized by a facile and environmentally friendly two-step process of hydrothermal and chemical deposition. Through a series of degradation activity tests of synthesized materials under different conditions, it was found that FeOOH/BiO2−x demonstrated outstanding organic pollutant degradation activity under visible and near-infrared light when hydrogen peroxide was added. After 90 min of reaction under photo-Fenton conditions, the degradation rate of Methylene Blue by FeOOH/BiO2−x was 87.4%, significantly higher than the degradation efficiency under photocatalysis (60.3%) and Fenton (49.0%) conditions. The apparent rate constants of FeOOH/BiO2−x under photo-Fenton conditions were 2.33 times and 3.32 times higher than photocatalysis and Fenton catalysis, respectively. The amorphous FeOOH was tightly coated on the layered BiO2−x, which significantly increased the specific surface area and the number of active sites of the composites, and facilitated the improvement of the separation efficiency of the photogenerated carriers and the prevention of photo-corrosion of BiO2−x. The analysis of the mechanism of photo-Fenton synergistic degradation clarified that ·OH, h+, and ·O2− are the main active substances involved in the degradation of pollutants. The optimal degradation conditions were the addition of the FeOOH/BiO2−x composite catalyst loaded with 20% Fe at a concentration of 0.5 g/L, the addition of hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 8 mM, and an initial pH of 4. This outstanding catalytic system offers a fresh approach to the creation and processing of iron-based photo-Fenton catalysts by quickly and efficiently degrading various organic contaminants.

Abstract:The photooxidation of renewable bioderivatives into value-added chemicals is highly significant; however, it typically exhibits low selectivity owing to the challenges in controlling the oxidative species and managing the desirable reaction pathways. In this work, we used the Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnIn 2 S 4 heterostructure, prepared by a CO 2 -mediated solid–solid phase transition, to catalyze the photooxidation of bioderived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) with a high selectivity of 98.1% and a yield rate of 882.6 μmol g −1 h −1 . The metal carbonate/oxide heterointerface enables the effective transfer of photoactive electrons and holes, optimizes surface oxygen activation, and facilitates the synergy of ·OOH and holes to selectively convert HMF into DFF. The findings unravel how the tailoring and coupling of the electron–hole pairs and reactive oxygen species on heterostructured materials can promote the usage of renewable feedstocks for sustainable development.

Abstract:Herein, a facile anti-solvent preparation strategy is proposed to fabricate lead-free halide perovskite Cs3Bi2Br9 with TiO2, which boosts photocatalytic activation of C(sp3)−H bonds in toluene oxidation. TiO2 not only works as nucleation center to reduce the particle size of perovskite, but could form type II heterojunction with Cs3Bi2Br9, thus improving the photocatalytic performance of the TiO2/Cs3Bi2Br9 composite. Under AM 1.5 G simulated sunlight irradiation, the optimal TiO2/Cs3Bi2Br9 composite exhibits both high production rate (9692.5 μmol g−1 h−1) and selectivity (91 %) of benzaldehyde product. As verified by in-situ ESR, in-situ FT-IR and DFT calculations, •O2 − and h+ are demonstrated to be the main active species in this process. This work provides a new insight into the design of high-performance lead-free perovskite photocatalysts for organic synthesis.

Abstract:The development of metal-free composite heterojunction catalysts is essential for economical and environmentally friendly carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion technologies. Most studies neglect the semiconductor property of graphene oxide (GO), which has the potential to participate in the construction of heterojunction catalysts. In this work, a novel organic-inorganic composite metal-free heterojunction photocatalyst was constructed for the photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Photo-reduced GO (PRGO) and sp(2)-carbon-chain triazine-based covalent organic framework (TP-COF) can be easily combined and form heterojunctions by a simple and green electrostatic self-assembly method through pi-pi interaction. The photogenerated electrons were transferred from the conduction band of PRGO to the valence band of TP-COF driven by energy band bending and built-in electric field, thus achieving effective charges separation. The strong reductive electrons on this S-scheme heterojunction efficiently and selectively reduced CO2 to CO. This work provides a new idea for designing GO-based heterojunction photocatalyst PRGO/TP-COF with potential application in CO2 photoreduction.
Exceptional Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Production from Sandwich‐Structured Graphene Interlayered Phenolic Resins Nanosheets with Mesoporous Channels

Abstract:The sandwich‐structured nanosheets based on graphene and mesoporous phenolic resin are designed with a record‐breaking conversion efficiency of 1.23% from solar energy to hydrogen peroxide chemical energy. The unique sandwich‐structure and mesoporous channels promote electron transport, increase two‐electron reaction selectivity, and improve mass transfer properties. Harnessing solar energy to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) from water (H2O) and dioxygen (O2) via artificial photosynthesis is an attractive route. To achieve high solar‐to‐H2O2 conversion efficiency, herein, an interfacial self‐assembly strategy is adopted to pattern mesoporous resorcinol‐formaldehyde resin (MRF) onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to form sandwich‐structured rGO@MRF polymeric photocatalysts. The internal graphene layer that mimics the electron transport chain of plant leaf, can effectively transfer electrons, and promote the two‐electron reduction of O2. Moreover, the mesoporous channels mimic the stomata, beneficially boost the fluid velocity, enrichment of O2, and diffusion of H2O2. Consequently, the developed metal‐free material can achieve an exceptional solar‐to‐chemical energy conversion efficiency of 1.23%. This ingenious interface engineering brings new opportunities for the design of efficient artificial photocatalysts.

Abstract:Pyrite (FeS2) is a promising photocatalyst because of its high optical absorption coefficient, suitable band gap and low cost. However, the low conductivity and weak stability of FeS2 limits its application. Herein, two-dimensional (2D) hetero-structured FeS2/reduced graphene (FeS2/rGO) photocatalyst was synthesized by a facile sodium-oleate-assisted two-phase solvothermal method. The optimized FeS2/rGO hybrids possessed excellent initial conversion frequency (TOF, 10.96 μmolO2 molmetal−1 s−1) and oxygen evolution amount (21.2 μmol), which was 2.5 times higher than of pure FeS2. Further studies revealed that the excellent catalytic property was attributed to the 2D heterojunction between FeS2 and rGO, which improved the optical adsorption of the hybrids and accelerated the rapid transfer of photogenerated charges from FeS2 surface to water molecules. The FeS2/rGO hybrids remained stable even after three runs photocatalytic reaction under the strong oxidation conditions. This study provides a facile strategy for the design of FeS2/rGO hybrids as a highly efficient water oxidation catalyst, improving the development of solar energy conversion.

Abstract:A critical challenge that hinders the application of perovskite materials is their instability toward water and light. Herein, we report lead-free bismuth halide perovskite nanocrystals encapsulated by the covalent organic frameworks (PNCs–COFs) via an in situ growth approach. The PNCs–COFs nanocomposites demonstrated good water processability that originates from the hydrophobic COFs shell. Furthermore, the COFs coating enables the formation of PNCs–COFs heterojunction, which facilitates the generation and transportation of photoinduced charge carriers. The PNCs–COFs were further applied as photocatalysts for free-radical polymerizations, photoactivating different coinitiators via both hole and electron transfer mechanisms in aqueous and organic phases. The excellent photocatalytic performance of PNCs–COFs was confirmed by high monomer conversion (up to 97.5%), diverse functional group tolerance and recyclability.

Abstract:Owing to their exceptional optoelectronic properties, organometallic halide perovskites (OHPs) have emerged as promising materials for photocatalytic applications. This study investigated the visible-light-induced oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) using mixed halide perovskite MAPbBrxCl3–x quantum dots (QDs). The QDs were synthesized with varying ratios of Br- and Cl- to tune their optical and electronic properties. Characterization using X-ray diffraction confirmed the crystalline structure, and transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray mapping verified the homogeneity of the halide distribution. The photocatalytic performance was evaluated under blue light-emitting diode irradiation, and the MAPbBr1Cl2 QDs demonstrated complete HMF conversion and high selectivity for DFF. Mechanistic studies revealed the involvement of superoxide radicals (·O2-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) in the photocatalytic process, as evidenced by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. The study results underscore the potential ability of MAPbBrxCl3–x QDs to enhance photocatalytic efficiency for biomass conversion, while also addressing the challenges of stability and toxicity associated with OHPs.

Abstract:With the target of bringing out a sustainable carbon-neutral system, halide perovskite materials have been explored to fulfil the requirements of solar-to-fuel conversion. Herein, formamidinium (CH(NH2)2+) lead bromide quantum dot (FAPbBr3 QD) as a novel of photocatalytic material is researched, which exhibits an excellent photostability and the optimum CO yield rate of 181.25 μmol·g-1·h-1 towards photocatalytic CO2 reduction in the mixed solvent of deionized water/ethyl acetate. Furthermore, the kinetic features of exciton bleach and photoluminescence spectra infer that FAPbBr3 QDs have an enough lifetime to separate and transfer charges for adsorbing CO2 molecules, thus facilitating the photocatalytic CO2 reduction. This study puts forward a reliable avenue of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials as efficient photocatalysts to convert CO2 into valuable chemical fuels.
