Abstract:Background: Psychiatric disorders constitute a global public health concern. Despite advancements in mental health care, significant disparities persist in the accessibility and quality of services provided, particularly in under-resourced areas. There is no data on mental health from the Raebareli district of Uttar Pradesh. This study reports the initial trends in patient profiles in a newly established psychiatry outpatient department.Aim: The present study was conducted to assess the sociodemographic and clinical profile of patients attending a newly started mental health establishment in an Institute of National Importance.Methodology: This retrospective study analyzed case records of psychiatric patients who attended the psychiatry outpatient department from October 2020 to October 2022. Data regarding the sociodemographic profile and clinical profile was obtained. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics as appropriate.Results: A total of 5650 patients visited the outpatient department during the study period. The mean age of the patients attending was 37.38 years, with the majority of the patients being males (55.3%), Hindus (93.7%) and married (71.7%). The trends showed that there was rise in patients attending the centers during April and September. The most common diagnosis belonged to the group of F40, neurotic, stress-related and somatoform disorder (43.8%) disorders as per ICD 10 classification.Conclusion: The profile of the presenting age of various disorders were in sync with the existing literature. A trend of increase in census could be seen during April and September. This study will be helpful in anticipating and planning the initiation of mental health services at a tertiary level

Abstract:Background and Aim: There is high prevalence of mental disorders in specialist treatment seekers across specialties. Still, psychiatry referral rates have been found to be very low. A physician refers a patient to psychiatric services for reasons like known case of mental disorder, physical symptoms without adequate explanation, or if the physician feels inadequate in dealing with psychological symptoms. A multi disciplinary approach should be encouraged for the management of such patients, facilitating early recognition and management of psychiatric problems. The aim is to study the sociodemographic variables of psychiatric referrals, reasons and diagnostic categories of psychiatric referrals, and the distribution of psychiatric diagnoses according to reasons and sources of referrals. Materials and Methods: A retrospective hospital based study was conducted in the Department of Psychiatry, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, New Delhi, by analyzing the recorded data of referrals to the Psychiatry Department from various other specialties from January 2019 to March 2020. All referred patients were evaluated by a Psychiatrist (MD Psychiatry) and the diagnosis was made as per the International Statistical Classification of Diseases 10 criteria. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Results: This study included 315 psychiatric referrals. The mean age and standard deviation of the entire sample were 37.75 ± 17.63. The referral rate was minimum from January to March 2020. The highest number of referrals was from Medicine Department (66.3%). Among those, the most common diagnoses were that of alcohol dependence (27%). The most common overall reason for referral was substance use (26.2%). The most common psychiatric diagnosis was alcohol dependence (24%). Hypertension was the most common physical comorbidity. The most common diagnosis for known case of psychiatric illness and follow ups were psychotic disorders (27.3% and 26.3%). Conclusion: The findings of this study give us insight that consultation liaison psychiatry should focus on early recognition and wholesome management of psychiatric disorders in patients with physical illness through consultation psychiatry services in general hospital settings.

Abstract:Objectives Treatment for mental health problems is determined by cultural, health infrastructure, and illness-related factors. Literature is sparse from India, particularly from the mental health resources-deficient regions of the country such as central India. Therefore, the current study is aimed at assessing the profile of the patients visiting the psychiatry outpatient facility (OPF) of a tertiary-care general hospital setting (GHS), their referral patterns, and their determinants. Materials and Methods A retrospective chart review of the newly registered individuals (October 2019 to March 2020) in the psychiatry OPF of the GHS from Central India was used in the study. Data (sociodemographic profiles, illness characteristics, and referral patterns) were extracted as per the standard guidelines. Statistical Analysis Descriptive statistics were used to represent sociodemographic, illness-, and past treatment-related characteristics of the participants. Chi-squared test was used to compare the referral characteristics of the two groups (self-referred patients vs. those referred by others, dependent variable) with regard to characteristics of the patients (independent variables). Results A total of 418 individuals were registered in the clinic. Most individuals suffered from the neurotic, stress-related, and somatoform group of disorders ( n = 231, 39.5%). More than halves were self-referred; most were referred from the internal medicine and allied departments. Being male, having at least graduate degree (χ 2 df(1) = 4.25 to 6.79, p < 0.05), suffering from organic mental-, psychotic-, and recurrent affective-disorders, and positive family history (χ 2 df(1) = 4.91 to 21.76, p < 0.05 to <0.001) along with first treatment attempt or previous treatment from the traditional healers, and absence of co-occurring medical illness were associated with self-referral (vs. referred by others) (χ 2 df(1) = 4.64 to 17.6, p < 0.05 to <0.001). Conclusions GHS has a characteristic referral pattern. The referral patterns of the patients for various psychiatric problems are determined by their sociodemographic, illness, and cultural characteristics; particularly, poor mental health literacy (among the patients-caregivers), stigma related to mental disorders, and unavailability of the mental health services act as major determinants. Sensitizing the patients-caregivers and health-care professionals concerning this could facilitate an early engagement with the psychiatric treatment. Future research needs to explore this phenomenon in greater detail, maybe by qualitative methods. Abstract:Background: Geriatric population is on a steady rise since the past decade especially in densely populated countries like India. Elderly form a significant proportion of patients presenting to the medical emergency department and they warrant more attention in terms of mental health conditions as they are more predisposed to conditions such as delirium and cognitive impairment. Aim of this Study: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity including substance use disorders among elderly (age ≥60 years) presenting to emergency medical outpatient services. Methodology: A total of 300 patients aged 60 years and above attending the medical emergency department of tertiary care hospital were approached, out of which, 232 participated. All the patients were assessed by Confusion Assessment Method, Modified Mini Screen and Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test. Those found positive on any of the screening instrument were further evaluated on International Classification of Diseases-10 criteria, by a semi-structured interview to confirm the psychiatric diagnosis. Results: At least, one psychiatric diagnosis, i.e., either axis-I psychiatric disorder or substance dependence disorder was seen in 62% of cases. Nearly, half of the patients (47.4%) fulfilled at least one axis-I psychiatric diagnosis other than the substance dependence disorder at the time of assessment, with delirium being the most common, seen in about one-third (34.1%) of the participants. Other psychiatric diagnoses in the study sample included dementia (9.5%), depressive disorders (8.2%), adjustment disorder (3%), and anxiety (not otherwise specified) disorder in 3.4% of participants. About one-third (31%) of the participants had tobacco dependence, currently, using and one-fifth (19.8%) of patients had alcohol dependence syndrome currently using. Higher prevalence of delirium and dementia was noted among patients who were aged ≥70 years. Conclusion: The present study shows that elderly patients presenting to medical emergency department have a high prevalence of psychiatry morbidity. Accordingly, there is a need to reorganize psychiatric services and training to improve the identification and management of mental disorders among elderly patients presenting to emergency.

Abstract:Background: Recognizing the need for good quality, scientific and reliable information for strengthening mental health policies and programmes, the National Mental Health Survey (NMHS) of India was implemented by National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, in the year 2015–2016. Aim: To estimate the prevalence, socio-demographic correlates and treatment gap of mental morbidity in a representative population of India. Methods: NMHS was conducted across 12 Indian states where trained field investigators completed 34,802 interviews using tablet-assisted personal interviews. Eligible study subjects (18+ years) in households were selected by a multi-stage, stratified, random cluster sampling technique. Mental morbidity was assessed using MINI 6. Three-tier data monitoring system was adopted for quality assurance. Weighted and specific prevalence estimates were derived (current and lifetime) for different mental disorders. Mental morbidity was defined as those disorders as per the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision Diagnostic Criteria for Research (ICD-10 DCR). Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to examine risk for mental morbidity by different socio-demographic factors. Survey was approved by central and state-level institutional ethical committees. Results: The weighted lifetime prevalence of ‘any mental morbidity’ was estimated at 13.67% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 13.61, 13.73) and current prevalence was 10.56% (95% CI = 10.51, 10.61). Mental and behavioural problems due to psychoactive substance use (F10–F19; 22.44%), mood disorders (F30–F39; 5.61%) and neurotic and stress-related disorders (F40–F48; 3.70%) were the most commonly prevalent mental morbidity in India. The overall prevalence was estimated to be higher among males, middle-aged individuals, in urban-metros, among less educated and in households with lower income. Treatment gap for overall mental morbidity was 84.5%. Conclusion: NMHS is the largest reported survey of mental morbidity in India. Survey estimated that nearly 150 million individuals suffer from one or the other mental morbidity in India. This information is to be used for planning, delivery and evaluating mental health programming in the country.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of population ageing is already a major social and health problem in the developed countries. The elderly have their problems of disease and disability due the increasing age and changing social circumstances and the need for social support forms an important aspect of geriatric healthcare.AIM: To comparatively study the prevalence and pattern of psychiatric disorders in geriatric population in old age homes with those living with the families; and its association with the sociodemographic variables.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale was used to screen the study population for psychotic and non-psychotic symptoms. Mini Mental Status Examination was used to assess the cognitive decline and the Psychiatric diagnosis was made according to International classification of diseases 10(th) Revision Diagnostic criteria. SPSS-16 was used for statistical analysis.RESULTS: Psychiatric disorders were more prevalent in individuals aged >80 years, in females, and illiterates. Mood disorders were the most common Psychiatric disorders. Individuals in old age homes had less prevalence of Psychiatric illness than those living in the community.CONCLUSION: The overall prevalence of Psychiatric disorders was less in the geriatric population in old age homes because of the better availability of care, being engaged in regular activities as per the schedule, group works, etc. This study reflects the importance of delivery of care for better life in geriatric population.

Abstract:Introduction: Epidemiology plays an important role in providing interpretation of disease occurrence in populations, change of disease rate, and the associated factors related to occurrence. Physical health problems not only coexist with mental disorders such as depression, but can also predict the onset and persistence of depression. A study of a nationally representative sample of the United States showed 79% of all ill people were comorbid. Aims and Objectives: The aims of this study were to study the comorbid condition in subjects with common mental disorders (CMD). Methods: It was a community-based and cross-sectional study carried out in an urban Slum. Slum was divided into four quadrants and 10% of the population was taken. A total of 150 houses were visited by random sampling and the sample size was calculated to be 294. The study was recorded in a pilot tested pre-designed validated semi-structured questionnaire. Four hundred and twenty-three out of 467 people were included in the study which was conducted in two phases. First phase was the screening phase which included history, general examination, and demographic profile along with self-reporting questionnaire (SRQ-20) to measure the presence of mental illness. Socioeconomic status of family and quality of life was evaluated using Kuppuswami socioeconomic status scale. Subjects scored 7 and above selected for the study and further evaluated using mini international neuropsychiatric interview plus in the second phase. Results: In the present study, highest percentage of CMD was 26.47%, belonging to 16–25 age group and distress was found in 16.07% and severe distress in 7.80% with SRQ-20 scoring between 7 and 13 and >14, respectively, with higher proportion of females. The prevalence of CMD was 238.77/1000 and 11.88% and 8.91% subjects were found hypertensive and diabetic respectively. Conclusion: There is need to consider the impact of common psychological health problems that urban slum communities are facing today and CMD can be a major contributor to slum’s overall burden of functional impairment.
A study on prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in advanced breast cancer patients at a tertiary cancer hospital in South India

Abstract:Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women globally as well in India. Breast cancer patients may suffer from psychological morbidity. Psychological problems like depression, anxiety, may affect the quality of life of breast cancer patients. To study the psychiatric morbidity in diagnosed advanced breast cancer patients. A cross sectional study was done in the department of Psychiatry, over a period of one and half years from January 2014 to June 2015 at Osmania Medical College Allied Hospitals (M.N.J Institute of Oncology & Regional Cancer Centre and Osmania General Hospital), Hyderabad, Telangana. Breast cancer patient cases and controls were studied by the General health questionnaire -28 (GHQ-28) Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview- plus (mini- plus). This difference in the proportion of psychiatric disorders was statistically significant. By using MINI plus, 26.7% of breast cancer patients reported psychiatric illness and this percentage was 10% in controls. This difference was not statistically significant at p value of 0.05 (Chi square value 2.78, p value 0.18). The most common psychiatric morbidities were Dysthymia, and MDD seen in 3 (10%) women each. Adjustment disorder unspecified was found in 2 (6.7%) women. There are statistically significant differences between cases and controls and these differences are circumscribed to domains of recall and language and orientation. The mean total score obtained by cases is 28.60 with a standard deviation of 1.354 and that obtained by the control group is 29.70 with a standard deviation of 0.535. The difference between the two groups is highly significant (p<0.001). The study brings out the need for identifying psychiatric problems at proper time, referral of breast cancer patients to Psychiatrists and points out the need for establishing psychiatric units in Cancer Institutes.

Abstract:Background: As our age increases, different pathophysiological changes occur, which leads to geriatric syndromes in the elderly. Along with other bodily changes, psychological changes and dementia start emerging that affects day-to-day activities of the elderly people. These symptoms often get undetected due to lack of care or awareness among the geriatric population or their caregivers. Aim and Objectives: This study aims to measure the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and onset of dementia among the geriatric population in a rural area of West Bengal. Materials and Methods: An observational, descriptive, community-based, and cross-sectional study was conducted by interviewing persons aged 60 years and above residing in Banspole village during the months of April–May, 2022, using General Health Questionnaire-12 and dementia assessment by rapid test questionnaire. The data were analyzed with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Results: A total of 104 respondents were interviewed (% male and % female). Most commonly found comorbidity was hypertension (48.08%), followed by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (26.92%) and hypothyroidism (25.97%). Significant psychological morbidity was found in 49 (47.11%) persons, whereas, different levels of dementia was found in 72 (69.23%) participants. Significant associations were found between psychiatric morbidity with age and socioeconomic status, and dementia with age and marital status. Significance level was at P < 0.05. Conclusion: As it can be seen that in psychiatric morbidity is present in almost half of the participants, and dementia in almost 70% participants, but most of the times, these get undetected or overlooked. Early detection and management are the need of the hour, as these conditions causes huge economic burden on the caregivers, as well as on the government concerned.
Pattern, clinical and demographic profile of inpatient psychiatry referrals in a tertiary care teaching hospital: a descriptive study

Abstract:Background Consultation liaison psychiatry (CLP) as a subspecialty is defined as the area of clinical psychiatry that encompasses clinical understanding, teaching and research activities of psychiatrists and allied health professionals in the non-psychiatric divisions of a general hospital. Psychiatric comorbidity of inpatients in tertiary care hospitals is huge. However, the amount of research in India in the field of consultation liaison is strikingly low. Aim To investigate the sociodemographic profile and psychiatric and physical subtypes of illness in patients admitted in other departments and referred to psychiatry department. Methods The study population comprised all consecutive inpatients referred for psychiatric consultation from other departments of a multispecialty tertiary care teaching hospital over 3 months. In a semistructured proforma, sociodemographic profile, referring departments, reasons for referral, referral rate, psychiatric diagnosis and physical illness diagnosis were recorded and analysed using descriptive statistics. Results 172 patients were included and assessed after referral from various departments, of which 56.4% were male and 43.6% were female. The mean age was about 33.95 years, with majority of the patients in the 21–30 years age group. The referral rate was 1.1%. The maximum referrals were from the medicine department, with abnormal behaviour (26.2%) being the most common reason for referral, followed by alleged suicide attempt or self-harm (24.4%), anxiety (10.5%), substance use (10%) and disorientation (7.6%). The most common psychiatric disorder among patients was depressive disorder (24.4%), followed by substance use disorder (19.7%), schizophrenia and psychotic disorder (9.3%), and stress and trauma-related disorder (8.1%). Conclusion There are very few psychiatry referrals and an alarmingly low referral rate, given the psychiatric morbidities in the medical setting. Psychiatry training should have more weightage across different medical specialties and liaison activities between psychiatry and other disciplines should be augmented, which can lead to a better understanding of psychiatric symptomatology, early symptom recognition, swift referral and ensuring follow-up, which, in turn, would be key to improving CLP services.

Abstract:Background: Psychiatric disorders differ in frequency and symptoms based on the cultural and ethnic background of patients. This can make diagnosing and treating patients challenging globally. In Pakistan, most psychiatric patients report multiple somatic complaints. Our goal was to investigate the causes of these complaints, identify common psychiatric conditions, and analyze their various manifestations in clinical practice. We also aimed to identify ways to improve the quality of care provided to our patients. Methodology: We collected and organized data by utilizing predetermined tables from a sample of 231 patients who visited the outpatient clinics. Inpatients were not included in this study because of the absence of a psychiatric unit at our facility. Patients' past medical and psychiatric records were thoroughly examined, and pertinent information was extracted. The most common psychiatric disorders within the studied population were diagnosed based on the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) diagnostic criteria. Results: In this study, a sample size of 231 was examined to determine the most common diseases (ICD-10) in males and females. In males, the most prevalent diseases were mixed anxiety and depression (MAD), depression, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), bipolar affective disorder (BPAD), social phobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Females, on the other hand, presented more with depression, GAD, mixed anxiety and depression, conversion or dissociative disorder, OCD, and panic attacks. Headaches were the most frequently reported symptom, experienced by 61.9% the of participants, followed by lethargy, extremity pains, palpitations, loss of appetite, heartburn or acidity, heaviness on the head, shoulder pains, bloating, dizziness, chest pains, hot flashes or shivering, and constipation. Meanwhile, a quarter of the males did not complain of any somatic symptoms, compared to 10% of the females. Additionally, 7.3% of females reported more than six somatic symptoms, compared to 5.7% of males. When it came to treatment preferences, 73.6% of the participants preferred medication over psychotherapy and over a combination of both. The Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) Statistics version 22 (IBM SPSS Statistics, Armonk, NY, USA) was used to conduct a chi-square test of independence to analyze the obtained data. For post hoc analysis of quantitative data (i.e., the number of somatic symptoms reported by participants), one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied, followed by Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) test. Conclusions: This is the first comprehensive study of its kind for this population and region. It emphasizes that clinicians should be aware of the variety of somatic symptoms and psychiatric presentations among this population. Such awareness can improve clinical practices and reduce the burden on health services.
Psychiatric morbidity among patients on treatment for tuberculosis at a tertiary referral hospital in Western Kenya

Abstract:Background: Mental disorders account for nine percent of the overall global burden of disease and are among the top ten leading causes of disability. Mental illness and tuberculosis share risk factors including poverty, overcrowding, stigma, poor nutrition, substance use and retro-viral disease co-infection. Presence of mental illness in tuberculosis delays health-seeking, affects drug adherence, increases cost of treatment, prolongs disease duration, lowers quality of life, and increases mortality. Early diagnosis, linkage, and treatment of psychiatric morbidity among patients with tuberculosis would improve outcomes for both. This study thus aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with psychiatric morbidity among patients on treatment for tuberculosis at a low- middle- income country. Methods: A cross-sectional study carried out at the tuberculosis clinic at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), Eldoret, Kenya. 367 participants on TB treatment were interviewed using Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) tool. The key outcome was presence of psychiatric illness. Pearson's Chi-square and logistic regression were used to assess relationships at bivariate and multivariate level respectively. Results: Majority of the respondents were male (61.3%) and overall median age was 33 years. About half of participants (48.5%) had at least one psychiatric illness. Common disorders were alcohol use disorder (30.3%), depression (23.4%), substance use disorder (12.8%) and suicidality (8.2%). Odds of 'any psychiatric illness' were increased by being male (aOR = 1.92; P = 0.04), being separated or divorced (aOR = 6.86; P = 0.002), using alcohol (aOR = 3.2; P<0.001), having been previously treated for tuberculosis (aOR = 2.76; P = 0.01), having other medical comorbidities (aOR = 4.2; P = 0.004) and family history of mental illness (aOR = 2.4; P = 0.049). Conclusion: Almost half of the patients on treatment for tuberculosis had at least one psychiatric illness. Introduction of protocols for screening for mental illness and integration of mental health services with tuberculosis care would aid prompt diagnosis, referral, and quality of care.

Abstract:Introduction: Somatization Disorder (SD) is known to cause disability and impact the quality of life due to psychological and somatic distress. Though it is a Common Mental Disorder (CMD), the disorder tends to visit all levels of health care, among which prevalence of SD at tertiary care is 10.1%. Aims: To estimate current prevalence and its correlates of socio-clinical factors in SD at a quaternary mental health centre (QMHC). Methods: Total of 422 adult subjects were selected through systematic random sampling at first contact psychiatry outpatient clinic. Subjects were interviewed with Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview Plus version 5.0.0, Clinical Global Impression Severity Scale and Sheehan Disability Scale. Results: Current prevalence of SD was 5%. Significant correlates are observed with median age of 40.5 years, female, married, <5 years of education, monthly income of <₹ 10,357(85.5%) and lower socioeconomic status (75%). Discussion: There is high prevalence of SD even at QMHC. The higher prevalence among adult population in this setup reflect the impairment of working population which invariably impact on national economy. Conclusion: Poverty continues to be a major contributing factor to SD causing double impact on the economy by affecting the working population the most.
Prevalence and treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders among tertiary hospitals in Pakistan; findings and implications

Abstract:Introduction: Mental health and neurological disorders are prevalent in Pakistan. However, there are considerable concerns with their management due to issues of access, availability of trained personnel and stigma alongside paucity of such data. Consequently, there is a need to document current treatment approaches starting with tertiary hospitals in Pakistan where patients with more severe mental and neurological disorders are typically treated. Subsequently, use the findings to help direct future policies and initiatives. Methods: Multi-centered, cross-sectional, prospective study principally evaluating current medicine usage among patients attending tertiary hospitals in Pakistan with psychiatric and neurological disorders. In addition, possible factors contributing to the prevalence of these disorders in this population to help with future care. All 23 tertiary care hospitals in the ten major Districts in Pakistan were included, which cover 75% of the population. Results: 57,664 patients were evaluated of which 35.3% were females. Both females and males had multiple brain disorders and multiple co-morbidities. Schizophrenia was the most prevalent disorder overall among both females (25.2%) and males (30.4%). A median of six medicines were prescribed per patient, with antipsychotics and antidepressants the most prescribed medicines. Clozapine was the most prescribed medicine in males (12.25%) and females (11.83%) including for psychiatric disorders, with sodium valproate the most prescribed medicine in epilepsy in males (42.44% of all anti-epileptic medicines) as well as females (46.38%). There was a greater prevalence of both disorders among the lower classes. A greater prevalence of schizophrenia was seen in patients abusing alcohol and smokers. The divorce rate was higher among the studied patients and the prevalence of depression was higher among the widowed population. Conclusions: There were concerns with the quality of prescribing including the extent of polypharmacy as well as possible overuse of clozapine especially in patients with epilepsy, both of which need addressing.

Abstract:Background: Morbidity can be defined as any deviation from the state of normal physical and mental well-being. The health of an individual does have a direct relationship with human resources, development and economic development of a nation. The existing hospital based, disease – oriented health care model has provided health benefits mainly to the urban elite, approximately 80% of health facilities are concentrated in urban areas. The rural areas where nearly 69% of the population live, do not enjoy the benefits of the modern curative and preventive health services. Therefore the present study was undertaken with the objective to assess the health needs of the rural population in terms of morbidity. Materials and Methods: The Cross-sectional study was conducted in a village which comes under field practice area of the Department of Community Medicine. The village was selected by using lottery method out of all the villages which comes under the field practice area. All villagers in the village constituted the study population. 2270 Study population (420 families) were involved in the study. A house to house survey was done using interview technique as a tool for data collection. Predesigned questionnaire was used to record the necessary information. Data regarding socio demographic factors and any disease condition among family members was collected. Results and Conclusions: Present study comprises of 2270 study participants in all age groups. The most common morbidities more than 1% population affected (> 22 cases) were Anaemia 517(22.77%), Acute respiratory infection 260(11.45%), Diabetes and Hypertension 255(11.23%), Diarrhoea 93(4.09%), Refractory error and cataract 46(2.02%), Arthritis 44(1.93%) and Dental caries 34(1.49%). There is dual burden of communicable as well noncommunicable diseases in our study population.

Abstract:Background: Health of a woman in the family is far more important because whole family revolves around her.Any deviation from the state of normal physical, mental and social well being is morbidity and the morbidity inwomen at any stage of the life cycle , more so during reproductive age group, adversely affects the quality of life ofher own as well as that of whole family. It creates hinderances in the overall development at the individual leveland that of the nation as well.Objectives: To assess the morbidity pattern of women in reproductive age group (15-44 years).Material and methods: A cross- sectional study was conducted on the females of reproductive age group (15-44years) in rural and urban field practice areas of Government Medical College, Amritsar from 1st March 2021 to28th Feb. 2022. Sample size was calculated using formula N ≥ Z 2 × P × (1-P) / d2 . A pre-tested, semi structuredquestionnaire was used for collection of the required data.Participants: All females in the age group of 15-44 years who gave a consent to participate in the study wereselected. Any female with any congenital disease / malformation / intellectual disability, pregnant female andfemales who failed to give written informed consent / not willing for participation in the study were excluded.Results: Out of 330 study participants, 146 (44.2%) had one or more types of morbidities at the time ofstudy. The majority (95%) of these morbidities were chronic in nature while a small proportion i.e. 5% were acute.The system involved in multiple morbidities was reproductive and gynaecological system in majority (43.8%) ofstudy participants which was followed by cardiovascular system (9.6%), musculoskeletal system (9.3%), centralnervous system (4.2%), metabolic, ENT and urinary system (3.9% each), gastrointestinal system (3.3%), skin (2.4%)and respiratory system (2.1%).Conclusions: The pattern of morbidity in females of reproductive age group turned out to be Reproductive andGynecological inclusive of menstrual disturbances, PID, fibroid, RTIs, STIs, vaginal discharge etc. followed bycardiovascular system (9.6%), musculoskeletal system (9.3%), central nervous system (4.2%), metabolic, ENT andurinary system (3.9% each), gastrointestinal system (3.3%), skin (2.4%) and respiratory system (2.1%).
Pattern of adult psychiatric emergencies at a tertiary care center before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:A gap exists in published data on psychiatric emergencies presenting to Indian centers over the entire pandemic. We assessed 2,048 consecutive adult psychiatric emergencies for the period April 2019–September 2021 to compare 18 months following the onset of the pandemic, with the pre pandemic year as the control. Mean age was 33.8 ± 13.6 years, with 55% females. The proportion with ICD-10 schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders (18.9% vs 15.3%; P = 0.031), mood disorders (21.8% vs 18.1%; P = 0.038), and personality disorders (3.8% vs 2%; P = 0.018) showed a significant increase during a pandemic, while those with no diagnosable illness reduced (28.6% vs 34.3%; P = 0.006). Suicidality was the reason for referral in 43%, comparable to pre pandemic year. Those with stay ≥24 hours increased (14% vs 11%; P = 0.034). Benzodiazepines remained the commonly prescribed medication, but a notable rise was seen in mood stabilizer prescriptions.
