Abstract:In irrigation ponds, the excess of nutrients can cause eutrophication, a massive growth of microscopic algae. It might cause different problems in the irrigation infrastructure and should be monitored. In this paper, we present a low-cost sensor based on optical absorption in order to determine the concentration of algae in irrigation ponds. The sensor is composed of 5 LEDs with different wavelengths and light-dependent resistances as photoreceptors. Data are gathered for the calibration of the prototype, including two turbidity sources, sediment and algae, including pure samples and mixed samples. Samples were measured at a different concentration from 15 mg/L to 4000 mg/L. Multiple regression models and artificial neural networks, with a training and validation phase, are compared as two alternative methods to classify the tested samples. Our results indicate that using multiple regression models, it is possible to estimate the concentration of alga with an average absolute error of 32.0 mg/L and an average relative error of 11.0%. On the other hand, it is possible to classify up to 100% of the samples in the validation phase with the artificial neural network. Thus, a novel prototype capable of distinguishing turbidity sources and two classification methodologies, which can be adapted to different node features, are proposed for the operation of the developed prototype.

Abstract:Turbidity is one of the crucial parameters of water quality. Even though many commercial devices, low-cost sensors, and remote sensing data can efficiently quantify turbidity, they are not valid tools for the classification it. In this paper, we design, calibrate, and test a novel optical low-cost sensor for turbidity quantification and classification. The sensor is based on an RGB light source and a light detector. The analyzed samples are characterized by turbidity values from 0.02 to 60 NTUs, and have four different sources. These samples were generated to represent natural turbidity sources and leaves in the marine areas close to agricultural lands. The data are gathered using 64 different combinations of light, generating complex matrix data. Machine learning models are compared to analyze this data, including training, validation, and test datasets. Moreover, different alternatives for data preprocessing and feature selection are assessed. Concerning the quantification of turbidity, the best results were obtained using averaged data and principal components analyses in conjunction with exponential gaussian process regression, achieving an R2 of 0.979. Regarding the classification of the turbidity, an accuracy of 91.23% is obtained with the fine K-Nearest-Neighbor classifier. The cases in which data were misclassified are characterized by turbidity values lower than 5 NTUs. The obtained results represent an improvement over the current solutions in terms of turbidity quantification and a completely novel approach to turbidity classification.

Abstract:The real-time monitoring of water quality parameters using optical sensors has become widespread. However, the price of commercial sensors and the ability to integrate them into customized sensing networks can limit their application in research and monitoring programs. This study introduces the design, verification, and validation of an innovative, low-cost, portable, low-power fluorometer–nephelometer device, employing long-range wide area network technology. The developed Internet of Things capable device can measure temperature, turbidity, phycocyanin fluorescence (a proxy for cyanobacteria biomass), and chlorophyll-a(Chl-a) fluorescence [a proxy for phytoplankton (cyanobacteria plus algae) biomass] in aquatic ecosystems. The fluorometer–nephelometer structure employs one digital thermistor probe, three distinct light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that are amber (590 nm) to excite phycocyanin pigments of cyanobacteria, blue (465 nm) to excite Chl-a pigments of phytoplankton, and near-infrared (NIR) (870 nm) to measure turbidity through light scattering. Two orthogonal silicon photodiodes are used as detectors set in line with long-pass filters of 830 nm for turbidity and 630 nm for phytoplankton. A peristaltic pump circulates water through a polymethylmethacrylate cuvette within a 3-D-printed fluorometer assembled in a weatherproof box. The activation by personalization long range wide area network (LoRaWAN) protocol is utilized for real-time wireless transmission of water quality data, while a micro-SD card is employed for storing the data locally. The optical sensor tests are conducted in the laboratory using standard turbidity solutions and pigments. The turbidity, phycocyanin, and Chl-a sensing ranges are 3–200 FTU, 0.025–2.5 mg-PC/L, and 1– $50 \, \mu $ g-chl/L, respectively. In repeated laboratory tests, the relative percent difference is consistently less than 10%.

Towards the Development of an Affordable and Practical Light Attenuation Turbidity Sensor for Remote Near Real-Time Aquatic Monitoring

Abstract:Turbidity is a key environmental parameter that is used in the determination of water quality. The turbidity of a water body gives an indication of how much suspended sediment is present, which directly impacts the clarity of the water (i.e., whether it is cloudy or clear). Various commercial nephelometric and optical approaches and products exist for electronically measuring turbidity. However, most of these approaches are unsuitable or not viable for collecting data remotely. This paper investigates ways for incorporating a turbidity sensor into an existing remote aquatic environmental monitoring platform that delivers data in near real-time (i.e., 15-min intervals). First, we examine whether an off-the-shelf turbidity sensor can be modified to provide remote and accurate turbidity measurements. Next, we present an inexpensive design for a practical light attenuation turbidity sensor. We outline the sensor’s design rationale and how various technical and physical constraints were overcome. The turbidity sensor is calibrated against a commercial turbidimeter using a Formazin standard. Results indicate that the sensor readings are indicative of actual changes in turbidity, and a calibration curve for the sensor could be attained. The turbidity sensor was trialled in different types of water bodies over nine months to determine the system’s robustness and responsiveness to the environment.

Abstract:This study presents the process of design and development of a low-cost turbidimeter for monitoring water quality, facilitating rigorous spatial–temporal variability analysis within large-scale hydrological systems. We propose a low-cost optical turbidimeter, modifying the existent SEN0189 turbidity sensor, Arduino boards, and additional sensors for temperature compensation. We compared a low-cost system with high-tech sensors, modifying the original low-cost SEN0189 probe for enhanced environmental performance. The three-step methodological framework involved prototype development, compensation for environmental factors, and preparation for future field deployment. Calibration equations with a high coefficient of determination and a temperature correction equation were established. We made adaptations to overcome field deployment challenges, including a 3-D printed sensor case, defining the relationship between measurement uncertainty and energy consumption, and specifying field installation guidelines. In summary, this study presents a comprehensive approach to a low-cost optical turbidity system, demonstrating its potential for accurate and affordable field deployment. We aim to address the critical need for sustainable inland water management tools, making this system a valuable contribution to environmental monitoring practices. We also aim to inspire similar development of open-source monitoring systems within our community.

A Low-Cost Continuous Turbidity Monitor

Abstract:Turbidity describes the cloudiness, or clarity, of a liquid. It is a principal indicator of water quality, sensitive to any suspended solids present. Prior work has identified the lack of low-cost turbidity monitoring as a significant hurdle to overcome to improve water quality in many domains, especially in the developing world. Low-cost hand-held benchtop meters have been proposed. This work adapts and verifies the technology for continuous monitoring. Lab tests show the low-cost continuous monitor can achieve 1 nephelometric turbidity unit (NTU) accuracy in the range 0–100 NTU and costs approximately 64 USD in components to construct. This level of accuracy yields useful and actionable data about water quality and may be sufficient in certain applications where cost is a primary constraint. A 38-day continuous monitoring trial, including a step change in turbidity, showed promising results with a median error of 0.45 and 1.40 NTU for two different monitors. However, some noise was present in the readings resulting in a standard deviation of 1.90 and 6.55 NTU, respectively. The cause was primarily attributed to ambient light and bubbles in the piping. By controlling these noise sources, we believe the low-cost continuous turbidity monitor could be a useful tool in multiple domains.

Abstract:Studying soil composition is vital for agricultural and edaphology disciplines. Presently, colorimetry serves as a prevalent method for the on-site visual examination of soil characteristics. However, this technique necessitates the laboratory-based analysis of extracted soil fragments by skilled personnel, leading to substantial time and resource consumption. Contrastingly, sensor techniques effectively gather environmental data, though they mostly lack in situ studies. Despite this, sensors offer substantial on-site data generation potential in a non-invasive manner and can be included in wireless sensor networks. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to develop a low-cost red, green, and blue (RGB)-based sensor system capable of detecting changes in the composition of the soil. The proposed sensor system was found to be effective when the sample materials, including salt, sand, and nitro phosphate, were determined under eight different RGB lights. Statistical analyses showed that each material could be classified with significant differences based on specific light variations. The results from a discriminant analysis documented the 100% prediction accuracy of the system. In order to use the minimum number of colors, all the possible color combinations were evaluated. Consequently, a combination of six colors for salt and nitro phosphate successfully classified the materials, whereas all the eight colors were found to be effective for classifying sand samples. The proposed low-cost RGB sensor system provides an economically viable and easily accessible solution for soil classification.

A Digital Microfluidic Diluter-Based Microalgal Motion Biosensor for Marine Pollution Monitoring.

Abstract:Marine pollution and monitoring have received more and more concern in recent years. Herein, a fully automatic whole-algae biosensor was designed for low-cost and fast detection of toxic contaminants in seawater. It consists of a digital microfluidic (DMF) diluter chip, an actuation element, a detector element, and a microalgae bioreporter. A feedback-control protocol based on charging-time compensation was introduced. It ensures precise actuation of the droplet with diverse salty concentrations and contents in the marine environment. The two mixer cross-split dilution engine increases the accuracy of droplet dispensing and concentration diluting. By selecting motility of P. subcordiformis as the sensor signal, the developed biosensor showed good sensitivity and robustness for a wide range of salinity (10-37 parts per thousand), temperature (0-25 degrees C), light levels (0-325 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1)), and cell density factor (1.0-4.0). The biosensor responses were examined in the presence of copper, lead, phenol, and nonylphenol (NP). In all cases, toxic responses (i.e. dose-related inhibition of algal motion) were detected with the detection limits of 0.65 mu mol.L-1, 1.90 mu mol.L-1, 2.85 mmol.L-1, and 5.22 mu mol.l(-1) respectively. These results were obtained in a much shorter time (2 h for our biosensor vs. 24 h-10 d for growth inhibition test) and the data are consistent with previous classical studies. We thus developed a simple, rapid, and adaptable system for marine routine monitoring and early-warning detection for lab and on-site applications.

Abstract:The ocean, with its intricate processes, plays a pivotal role in shaping marine life, habitats, and the Earth's climate. This study addresses issues such as beach erosion, the survival of propagules from species like Posidonia oceanica, and nutrient distribution. To tackle these challenges, we propose an innovative sensor that quantifies hydrodynamic velocity by measuring the output voltage derived from detecting changes in light absorption and scattering using LEDs and LDRs. Our results not only demonstrate the effectiveness of the sensor but also the accuracy of the processing algorithm. Notably, the blue LED exhibited the lowest mean relative error of 7.59% in freshwater, while the yellow LED was most precise in chlorophyll-containing water, with a mean relative error of 6.80%. In a runoff simulation, we observed similar velocities with the blue, green, and white LEDs, 6.89 cm/s, 6.99 cm/s, and 7.05 cm/s, respectively, for nearly identical time intervals. It is important to highlight that our proposed sensor is not only effective but also highly cost-efficient, representing less than 0.43% of the cost of a Nortek Vector 6 MHz and 0.18% of the Teledyne Workhorse II 300 kHz Marine. This makes it a key tool for managing marine ecosystems sustainably.

Abstract:Compared with light intensity measurements of turbid liquids based on direct or lock-in amplification methods, the square excitation method (SEM) can be used to obtained abundant information from both the time- and frequency-domains. Voltage-based turbidimetry in the time domain (The voltage readout here refers to the signal obtained directly by the photodetector followed by an amplifier and is a function of the light intensity attenuated by scattering and absorption effects) is subject to measurement error because of the heterogeneous size distribution of suspended particles, fluctuations of the light source, and measurement noise. In this work, a novel low-cost turbidity sensor was proposed by combining spectral component extraction (SCE) with the transmitted (It) and scattered (Is) light signals and their ratio (It/Is). A near-infrared Light Emitting Diode (NIR-LED) at 860 nm was employed as the light source to reduce the system cost. Two independent preprocessing channels composed of a photodiode, a transimpedance amplifier, and a band-pass filter converted the modulated light to signals of a suitable scale. For conversion of the conditioned analog signals, a 16-bit analog-to-digital converter was used and the signal was further processed using a high-performance microcontroller (STM32F405). The SCE algorithm and turbidity correlation were implemented via the integrated digital-signal-processer combined with Fast Fourier Transform digital algorithm. Averaging of multiple measurements further improved the measurement precision when using the first, third, and fifth spectral components that were related to a known turbidity. The calibration measurements for the sensor revealed that the correlation coefficients from the linear fitting were reliable and satisfactory when using It, Is, and (It/Is). Additionally, validation measurements further demonstrated that the proposed sensor had low measurement error. The maximum measured error was 6 % for a turbidity of 10 NTU while the lowest relative error was 0.4 % for the 280 NTU solution. The results demonstrate that the sensor has potential for automatic in-situ turbidity measurement applications, particularly for in-situ extraction processes used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Abstract:Accurate monitoring and classification of algal species, as well as the estimation of chlorophyll-a concentration, are crucial for assessing water quality and managing aquatic ecosystems. Algal blooms, particularly those involving toxic species, pose significant threats to water resources, aquatic life, and human health. Traditional remote sensing methods lack the precision and specificity needed to address these challenges effectively. This study aims to develop a more accurate, flexible, and comprehensive approach to chlorophyll-a concentration inversion using hyperspectral data By leveraging the rich spectral information provided by hyperspectral data and combining Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks with one-dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks (1D-CNN), we significantly improve the accuracy of chlorophyll-a concentration inversion. Preliminary measurements in our study area showed chlorophyll-a concentrations exceeding $30 \mu \mathrm{g} / \mathrm{L}$, indicating a eutrophic state. Experimental results demonstrate that this combined approach enhances the ${\mathrm {R}}^{2}$ Coefficient of Determination) between predicted and actual chlorophyll-a concentrations from 0.71 to 0.94, outperforming traditional models. This advancement indicates a significant improvement in aquatic remote sensing technology, providing a more precise and reliable method for water quality monitoring and understanding aquatic ecosystem dynamics.
Towards integrated multi-sensor platform using dual electrochemical and optical detection for on-site pollutant detection in water

Abstract:The present work is dedicated to the development of a lab-on-chip (LOC) device for water toxicity environmental analysis and more especially herbicide detection. The final goal is focused on the functional integration of three-electrode electrochemical microcells (ElecCell) and organic photodetectors (OPD) in order to perform simultaneously electrochemical and optical detection in the frame of algal metabolism monitoring. Considering three different algae, ie. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Chlorella vulgaris while dealing with photosynthesis, the multi-microsensor platform enables to measure the variations of microalgae fluorescence as well as oxygen production. It is applied to study the Diuron herbicide influences on algal metabolism, evidencing fluorescence enhancement and oxygen production inhibition for concentrations as low as few tens of nanomoles. These results are performed with unconcentrated and six time concentrated algae solutions respectively, to estimate the ability of this dual-sensor system to conduct measurements without any sample preparation. Thus, according to the obtained results, the proposed LOC device is fully adapted to the electrochemical/optical dual detection for on-site pollutant analysis, ie. without sample pre-treatment.
Multi-Wavelength Based Optical Density Sensor for Autonomous Monitoring of Microalgae

Abstract:A multi-wavelength based optical density sensor unit was designed, developed, and evaluated to monitor microalgae growth in real time. The system consisted of five main components including: (1) laser diode modules as light sources; (2) photodiodes as detectors; (3) driver circuit; (4) flow cell; and (5) sensor housing temperature controller. The sensor unit was designed to be integrated into any microalgae culture system for both real time and non-real time optical density measurements and algae growth monitoring applications. It was shown that the sensor unit was capable of monitoring the dynamics and physiological changes of the microalgae culture in real-time. Algae biomass concentration was accurately estimated with optical density measurements at 650, 685 and 780 nm wavelengths used by the sensor unit. The sensor unit was able to monitor cell concentration as high as 1.05 g·L(-1) (1.51 × 10⁸ cells·mL(-1)) during the culture growth without any sample preparation for the measurements. Since high cell concentrations do not need to be diluted using the sensor unit, the system has the potential to be used in industrial microalgae cultivation systems for real time monitoring and control applications that can lead to improved resource use efficiency.

Abstract:The concentration of nitrate (NO3−) in Narragansett Bay has been shown to undergo considerable temporal and spatial variation. However, the dynamics of this flux has never been monitored on a fine-scale (<100 m, < 1 d) or in real-time. Whole-cell bio-reporters are promising candidates for low cost environmental sensing of bioavailable nutrients. Yet difficulties remain in creating sensors for long term deployment in the marine environment. This paper describes the creation and validation of a low-cost sensor using a self-bioluminescent strain of the cyanobacteria Synechococcus elongatus pcc 7942 for the direct measurement of bioavailable nitrate. Nitrate bioavailability was measured by monitoring light emission from a luxAB based promotor fusion to glnA using a light to frequency sensor and single board microcontroller. Sensor designs are presented in this manuscript with specific focus on storage, cell viability, and compatibility with the marine environment. Sensors were able to consistently assess nitrate standards as low as 1 ppm (16.3 μM). Using a wavelet denoising approach to reduce white noise and hardware noise, nitrate detection of standards as low as 0.037 ppm (0.65 μM) was achieved. Good sensitivity and low cost make these sensors ideal candidates for continuous monitoring of biological nitrates in estuarine systems.GRAPHICAL

Abstract:This paper presents a low-cost portable turbidity sensor using optical fiber. The system composition is described in detail, including the design of the sensor probe, signal conditioning module and data processing. In our solution, support vector regression (SVR) and temperature compensation are combined to model the relationship between the turbidity and the voltages (transmitted voltage and side-scattered voltage). Besides, we provide direct user accessibility via operation interface on an application (APP). The performance of the turbidity sensor has been verified in the laboratory. Experiments are conducted using standard turbidity solution, and the results demonstrate that the proposed sensor is feasible and effective.

Abstract:Abstract Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a growing concern to public health and aquatic ecosystems. Long-term water monitoring conducted by hand poses several limitations to the proper implementation of water safety plans. This work combines automatic high-frequency monitoring (AFHM) systems with machine learning (ML) techniques to build a data-driven chlorophyll- a (Chl- a ) soft-sensor. Massive data for water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and system battery were taken for three years at intervals of 15 min from two different areas of As Conchas freshwater reservoir (NW Spain). We designed a set of soft-sensors based on compact and energy efficient ML algorithms to infer Chl- a fluorescence by using low-cost input variables and to be deployed on buoys with limited battery and hardware resources. Input and output aggregations were applied in ML models to increase their inference performance. A component capable of triggering a 10 μ g/L Chl- a alert was also developed. The results showed that Chl- a soft-sensors could be a rapid and inexpensive tool to support manual sampling in water bodies at risk.
Online Monitoring Technology for Algae by Fluorescent Sensing Method

Abstract:Water quality eutrophication and breakout of water bloom in lakes and reservoirs have already become a major environmental concern.To analyze the ecological mechanism of breakout of water bloom,to understand the generating and vanishing process of water bloom and to achieve an early warning of water bloom,the effective monitoring of the population structure of planktonic algae during breakout of water bloom is essential,which mainly includes species composition and quantitative variation of planktonic algae.Based on sensing method of fluorescence in vivo,embedded control technology and real-time data acquisition technology,this paper proposes a design of online fluorometer for algae.The fluorometer for algae can be used to measure the content of different spectral groups of algae(blue algae,green algae and brown algae) in vivo and in situ.The results of comparative experiments show that the measurement errors of blue algae,green algae and brown algae are less than 17.88%.Field experiments in Caohu show that fluorometer has a good stability.The fluorometer with a good performance would have further potential applications in environment monitoring,water bloom early-warning and evaluation of lake eutrophication.

Abstract:We introduce a new image cytometer design for detection of very small particulate and demonstrate its capability in water analysis. The device is a compact microscope composed of off the shelf components, such as a light emitting diode (LED) source, a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor, and a specific combination of optical lenses that allow, through an appropriate software, Fourier transform processing of the sample volume. Waterborne microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Legionella pneumophila (L. pneumophila) and Phytoplankton, are detected by interrogating the volume sample either in a fluorescent or label-free mode, i.e. with or without fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) molecules attached to the micro-organisms, respectively. We achieve a sensitivity of 50 cells/ml, which can be further increased to 0.2 cells/ml by preconcentrating an initial sample volume of 500 ml with an adhoc fluidic system. We also prove the capability of the proposed image cytometer of differentiating microbiological populations by size with a resolution of 3 um and of operating in real contaminated water.
