Abstract:Members of Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) are common pathogens of potato, causing dry rot in the west of Iran which involved Hamedan, Kermanshah, Eilam and Kurdistan provinces. Therefore, the objectives in this study were to isolate and identify disease-causing FSSC from infected potato tubers based on the morphological and molecular characteristics. Forty-five isolates of Fusarium were obtained from potato tubers collected from the wet market in different regions of the west of Iran and identified as FSSC through morphological characters. All of the isolates were evaluated for their pathogenicity on healthy potato tubers in the planthouse. The tubers rot symptoms were observed on the 21st day after inoculation of Fusarium isolates on the tubers tested. In the tubers inoculation tests, lesion sizes were quite variable; therefore, the measurement was done to compare the depth and width of lesion expansion among the isolates. Based on the sequence data from translation elongation factor (EF-lα) gene and internal transcript spacer (ITS) regions analysis, all of the selected FSSC isolates were divided into two major groups. This is the first report on molecular identification of FSSC strains isolated from potato tubers in Iran and Fusarium falciforme was reported for the first time in Iran.

Abstract:Fusarium oxysporum was isolated from the field samples of the melon wilt disease.The pathogen could be found in both healthy plants and infected plants,but the amount of pathogen was about 100 times higher in the infected plants than in the healthy plants.In the infected plants,the different parts of the plant consisted of different amount of the pathogen,in which the highest was in root,then in the middle stem,and the least in the top of the stem.Total amount of pathogen was related to the levels of infected degree,i.e. 10.75×10~4 cfu/g in Level 2 (middle),8.90×10~4 cfu/g in Level 3 (serious),8.63×10~4 cfu/g in Level 1 (light),and 0.08×10~4 cfu/g in healthy plant,on average respectlively.The optimal growth temperature of F.oxysporum was 25±1℃, optimal pH was 7.

Abstract:Some taxa of the Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) have been associated with clinical infections in humans and plant diseases. Among the several fusaria that cause relevant mycoses in cucurbits in Spain, Neocosmospora keratoplastica is described for the first time as responsible for wilt and root rot in both watermelon and melon crops in producing areas of Valencia and Alicante provinces. Due to the ecological and systematic complexity of the group, with described clinical forms and plant pathogens practically indistinguishable from each other, both pathological evidences (including artificial inoculation bioassays) and molecular methods (multilocus phylogeny based on ITS, TEF-1α, and RPB2 regions) are provided to confirm this finding, since the presence of this soil-borne pathogen could have been probably underestimated in cucurbits-producing areas of Spain.

Abstract:A serious Melon Fusarium wilt was first found in Sanya,Hainan Province in 2008.During the early stages of the disease,the leaves wilted gradually from bottom to top with the wilt being the most pronounced at noon and were still capable of recovering at morning and night.However,A few days later,all the leaves wilted down and resulted in the death of the whole plant.A pathogen satisfied Koch's law,was isolated from the melon(Jinmi No.6)and identified as a causal agent.The causal pathogen was not a pathogen to cucumber,banana,tomato and pepper seedlings.Based on the characterictics of the colony morphology,colony growth rate,macroconidia,microconidia,chlamydospores and conidiophore and the rDNA ITS sequencing analysis,the pathogen was preliminarily identified as Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.Melonis

Abstract:Identification of Fusarium species associated with diseases symptoms in plants is an important step toward understanding the ecology of plant-fungus associations. In this study, four Fusarium isolates were obtained from root rot of Oryza sativa L. in Izeh (southwest of Iran) and identified based on phylogenetic analyses combined with morphology. Phylogenetic analyses based on combined translation elongation factor 1-α, calmodulin, RNA polymerase II second largest subunit, and Beta-tubulin (tub2) sequence data delimited two new species, namely F. khuzestanicum and F. oryzicola spp. nov., from previously known species of Fusarium within F. incarnatum-equiseti species complex (FIESC). Morphologically, F. khuzestanicum produces the macroconidia with distinctly notched to foot-shaped basal cells, while basal cells in the macroconidia of F. oryzicola are more extended and distinctly elongated foot shape. Furthermore, these two new species are distinguished by the size of their sporodochial phialides and macroconidia. The results of the present show that the FIESC species complex represent more cryptic species.
First Report of Fruit Rot Disease on melon (Cucumis melo L.) Caused by Fusarium ipomoeae in China

Abstract:Fusarium rot on melon fruit has become an important postharvest disease for producers worldwide, typically involving multiple Fusarium pathogens (Khuna et al. 2022; Medeiros Araújo et al. 2021). In 2022, Fusarium fruit rot of muskmelon (Cucumis melo var. conomon) occurred sporadically in a field at Huainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (32.658193º N, 117.064922º E) with an incidence of about 10%. Among these diseased muskmelons, a fruit exhibiting a white to yellowish colony athe intersection of the diseased and healthy tissues was collected and labeled TGGF22-17. The streak plate method was employed to isolate fungal spores on Bengal Red PDA (potato dextrose agar), which were then incubated at 25℃ in darkness. Following isolation and purification, a single-spore strain, TGGF22-17, was obtained and analyzed using morphological characters on PDA, synthetic nutrient agar (SNA) and carnation leaf agar (CLA) (Leslie and Summerell 2006), along with molecular identification. Colours were rated according to the color charts of Kornerup and Wanscher (1978). Based on the colony morphology on PDA, the isolate displayed a rosy buff or buff color with a white to buff margin. The colony margin was undulate, with the reverse transitioning from amber-yellow to honey-yellow. Aerial macroconidia on SNA were thin-walled, hyaline, mostly 3-5 septate, falcate, and measured 18.5-46.4 (x̄=34.2) × 2.9-4.8 (x̄ =3.9) μm in size (n =50). Sporodochial macroconidia on CLA were mostly five-septate with long apical and basal cells, exhibiting dorsiventral curvature. They were hyaline, with the apical cell hooked to tapering and the basal cell foot-shaped, measuring 46.5-89.6 (x̄ =72.3) × 3.5-5.0 (x̄ =4.3) μm in size (n = 100). Portions of three loci (TEF-1α, RPB1 and RPB2) were amplified and sequenced as described by Wang et al. (2019). Sequences were deposited in GenBank with accession number PP196583 to PP196585. The three gene sequences (TEF-1α, RPB1 and RPB2) of strain TGGF2022-17 shared 99.5% (629/632bp), 97.9% (1508/1540 bp) and 99.9% (1608/1609 bp) identity to the ex-type strain F. ipomoeae LC12165 respectively by pairwise DNA alignments on the FUSARIOID-ID database (https://www.fusarium.org). Phylogenetic analysis of the partial TEF-1α and RPB2 sequences with PhyloSuite (Zhang et al. 2020) showed the isolated fungus clustered with F. ipomoeae. Based on the morphological and phylogenetic analyses, TGGF22-17 was identified as F. ipomoeae. Pathogenicity tests were performed on healthy melons, which were surface-sterilized with 75% alcohol and wounded using a sterilized inoculation needle. A 4-mm diameter plug from a 7-day-old SNA culture of TGGF22-17 was aseptically inserted in the middle of the wound, sealed with plastic bag after absorbent cotton was included to maintain moisture. Five melons were each inoculated at three points. Noncolonized PDA agar plugs served as the negative control. The inoculated and uninoculated plugs were removed approximately 48 hours after inoculation. The melon inoculated with TGGF22-17 exhibited water-soaked black lesions 48h post-inoculation, resulting in a 100% infection rate (15/15). After 7 days, mycelium was obseved on the inoculated melons. No disease symptoms were observed on the uninoculated melons. To fulfill Koch's postulates, fungi were isolated from the inoculated fruit and confirmed as F. ipomoeae by morphological observation. Fusarium ipomoeae has been reported to cause fruit rot on winter squash (Cucurbita maxima) in Japan (Kitabayashi et al. 2023). To our knowledge, this is the first report of fruit rot on muskmelon caused by F. ipomoeae in China and this report will be valuable for monitoring and management of fruit rot disease on muskmelons.
Identification of the Pathogen Inducing Fruit Soft Rot of Melon

Abstract:Soft rot with symptoms of initial brown spots on the surface and soft rot inside of melon (Cucumis melo L.) was often reported in Yiwu and other areas, Zhejiang province. The infected melon fruit corrupted consequently. In some areas this disease caused significant yield loss to melon industry. 4 isolates (M1 to M4) with two types of morphology of bacterial colonies were isolated and purified from infected melon fruit. The tests of hypersensitive reaction in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) and pathogenicity in the melon fruit for these isolates demonstrated that M1 and M3 were pathogenic, whereas M2 and M4 were not. Both M1 and M3 were identified to be an isolate of Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora based on their properties of morphology, flagella, gram reaction, host range and the sequence alignment of 16S rRNA gene. In addition, inoculation test showed that this pathogen could induce soft rot to tomato, cucumber, watermelon and pumpkin fruits.
Developments of Functional Markers for Fom-2-mediated Fusarium Wilt Resistance Based on Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in Melon (cucumis Melo L.)

Abstract:Three single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sites in which amino acids had changed were detected by sequence analysis within the leucine-rich repeat (LRR) region of the Fom-2 gene. Cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) and allele-specific PCR (AS-PCR) methods were employed to explore the SNP validation linked to fusarium wilt resistance in the F-1 and F-2 generations simultaneously. Homozygous- and heterozygous-resistant genotypes and homozygous-susceptible genotype could be clearly distinguished using the CAPS method, and three detected SNP sites were observed to be linked to fusarium wilt resistance, with a segregation ratio of 1:2:1 in the F-2 generation. In addition, heterozygous-resistant and homozygous-susceptible genotypes could be clearly distinguished in the F-1 generation using the AS-PCR method, showing a 3:1 segregation in terms of resistant and susceptible genotypes in the F-2 generation. We therefore developed SNP-based functional markers (FMs) and identified some melon germplasm resistant to fusarium wilt by FM analysis within melon species. In conclusion, the SNP-based FMs originating from the SNP site of the Fom-2 LRR region were determined to be linked to fusarium wilt resistance and showed promise in the enhancement of breeding in melon.
Rhizosphere soil microorganism populations and community structures of different watermelon cultivars with differing resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum

Abstract:Fusarium wilt is an increasingly serious disease of watermelon that reduces crop productivity. Changes in microorganism populations and bacterial and fungal community structures in rhizosphere soil of watermelon cultivars resistant or susceptible to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum were investigated using a plate culture method and PCR-DGGE analysis. Plate culture showed that populations of culturable bacteria and actinomycetes were more abundant in the rhizosphere of the resistant watermelon cultivar than the susceptible cultivar, but the fungi population had the opposite pattern. Populations of Penicillium , Fusarium , and Aspergillus were significantly lower in the resistant cultivar than the susceptible cultivar at the fruiting and uprooting stages (p < 0.05). Pattern matching analysis generated the dendrogram of the DGGE results indicating the relatedness of the different resistant watermelon cultivars and their corresponding rhizosphere microbial communities. Further sequencing analysis of specific bands from DGGE profiles indicated that different groups of bacteria and fungi occurred in the rhizosphere of different watermelon cultivars. Our results demonstrated that plant genotype had a significant impact on soil microbial community structure, and the differences in the rhizosphere microbial community may contribute to the differences in resistance to F. oxysporum f. sp. niveum.
Identification and Characterization of Fusarium Nirenbergiae Associated with Saffron Corm Rot Disease.

Abstract:Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is the most expensive spice plant and is distributed widely around the world. However, its production is limited by corm rot, a disastrous disease, attributed to Fusarium oxysporum in many regions of the world. In 2020, extensive surveys were carried out in Zhejiang, Shanghai, Anhui, and Guizhou provinces as saffron growing areas of China. Fourteen single-spore isolates were obtained from rotted corms and identified as F. nirenbergiae according to morphological appearance and multilocus phylogenetic analysis with translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1), DNA-directed RNA polymerase II largest subunit (rpb2), and β-tubulin (tub2). Results of the pathogenicity assay supported the conclusion that F. nirenbergiae is the pathogen responsible for corm rot. In this study, we obtained the whole genome sequence of two highly virulent F. nirenbergiae strains via the Illumina HiSeq platform. Genome sequence assemblies of approximately 52.7 and 52.2 Mb were generated for isolates WY5 and SH1, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of F. nirenbergiae causing C. sativus corm rot in China and indeed worldwide. Results from this research contribute to our understanding of genetic diversity, genomic information, and host determination, which will enable researchers to design appropriate management measures for this hazardous disease.
Morphology, pathogenicity and molecular identification of Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) associated with potato tubers

Abstract:Abstract Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is among the top five crops growing worldwide following cereals, wheat, rice, corn and barley due to its high carbohydrate content and adaptability. Potatoes are particularly valued in developing countries as a rich source of starch, vitamins C and B6 and essential amino acids. Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) is common pathogen of potato, causing dry rot in the Upper Egypt. In this study were isolated and identified FSSC from potato tubers based on the morphological and molecular characteristics. 187 isolates of Fusarium solani were obtained from potato tubers collected from different regions in the Upper Egypt. Based on the morphological characters, sequence data from β-tubulin and translation elongation factor (TEF-1α) genes, all of the selected FSSC isolates were divided into three major groups (F. keratoplasticum, F. falciforme and F. solani). All the tested FSSC were able to produce amylases. All of the isolates were evaluated for their pathogenicity on healthy potato tubers; which showed pathogenic effect, lesion sizes were quite variable. F. solani (SVUFs73) had a highly virulent effect.
Comparative transcriptomics and bioinformatics profiling provide insights into resistance to Fusarium wilt in melon

Abstract:Our results clarify the core properties of the MeloCAD and MeloCHT genes and contribute to our understanding of the gene processes underlying melon resistance to Fusarium wilt. Melon is an important cash crop grown worldwide, with China leading the world in melon acreage. Melon wilt is becoming more common as the area under melon cultivation gradually increases. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the resistance pattern of Fusarium wilt in melons. In this work, among the four test melon cultivars, YG was highly resistant to Fusarium wilt and 1455 was disease‐resistant. However, 5657 was susceptible, while 5455 was highly susceptible to the disease. We detected 71,852 differentially expressed genes in 16 combinations, including 37,382 with up‐regulation and 3470 with down‐regulation, and we investigated 11 genes associated with resistance to Fusarium wilt through bioinformatics and transcriptome analysis. We identified two differentially expressed cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenases (CAD) that were down‐regulated in the susceptible melon material in contrast to the resistant variety. Nine chitinase (CHT) genes were differentially expressed, with four showing up‐regulation and four showing down‐regulation in the susceptible compared to the resistant melon material. The MeloCHT genes were located on chromosomes 2, 6, 8, 11 and 12, with four of them on chromosome 8. MeloCAD1 was located on chromosome 1 and MeloCAD2 on chromosome 8. The physicochemical properties of the encoded proteins were predicted by bioinformatics, including theoretical isoelectric point, instability coefficient, relative molecular mass, lipid solubility index and hydrophilicity index. The genes encode proteins with α‐helix, extended strand, random coils and β‐turns. This study provides fundamental knowledge on the transcriptome of melons and establishes a foundation for future research on the detection and application of Fusarium wilt‐resistant genes in melons.

Abstract:Fusarium oxysporum is a cosmopolitan fungus, consisting of both pathogenic and non-pathogenic members and known to be the causative agent of several diseases on various host plants. In Malaysia, most studies have focused on pathogenic F. oxysporum isolates because of their implications for agricultural production, but less attention has been given to non-pathogenic isolates. The aim of this study was to determine the phylogenetic relationship, genetic diversity, pathogenicity and host range of F. oxysporum in Malaysia. A total of 133 isolates of F. oxysporum were isolated from symptomatic plants of Abelmoschus esculentus , Solanum melongena , Solanum tuberosum , Cucumis sativus , Solanum lycopersicum , Cucumis melo , Musa paradisiaca var. awak , Hymenocallis littoralis , Asparagus officinalis , and Sansevieria trifasciata and non-agricultural soils in Malaysia. Comparison of nucleotide sequences of translation elongation factor 1-alpha ( tef1-α ) and mitochondrial small subunit (mtSSU) showed that the isolates were 98–100% similar to F. oxysporum from GenBank, thus, confirming the fungal identity. Besides, Malaysian isolates of F. oxysporum exhibited polyphyletic evolutionary origin, wide host range, and genetically diverse by grouping into 20 VCGs and 17 IGS haplotypes. This finding is beneficial for the purpose of quarantine, monitoring and disease management in the agricultural settings in Malaysia.

First Report of Fusarium pernambucanum Causing Fruit Rot of Melon in China

Abstract:In May of 2020, November of 2021 and May of 2022, a preharvest fruit rot with white mycelia was observed inside and outside of the fruits of thick skin muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) growing in about ten greenhouses (each greenhouse had about 320 muskmelons) with disease incidence of 70% in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province of China. In order to identify the causal agent, plant tissues from the margin of the symptomatic tissue were sterilized for 1 min with 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), 2 min with 75% ethyl alcohol, rinsed in sterile distilled water three times (Zhou et al 2019), and then placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates containing streptomycin sulfate (100 μg/mL) at 25℃ for 4 days. Only Fusarium colonies were isolated from all the plant tissues. The growing hyphae were transferred to new PDA plates using the hyphal tip method, putative Fusarium colonies were purified by single-sporing. Six fungal isolates (Fi-1~6) were obtained. The average radial mycelial growth rate of Fusarium isolate Fi-3 was 4.6 mm/day at 25℃ in the dark on PDA, and like other five isolates. The colonies are abnormal, producing lots of aerial hyphae, each isolate was white to light orange. Isolate Fi-3 produced macroconidia with 4 to 6 septa, tapered with pronounced dorsiventral curvature and measured 21 to 30 μm long 4 to 5 μm wide on Spezieller Nährstoffarmer Agar (SNA) medium at 25℃ for 10 days (Leslie and Summerell 2006), but polyphialides and chlamydospores were still not available for 30 days. The pathogen species was further identified by translation elongation factor-1 alpha (EF-1α) sequencing. The EF-1α of six isolates were sequenced, and their EF-1α sequences were 100% identical to each other, and the sequence of strain Fi-3 was deposited in GenBank with accession no. OL782040 and was also compared with sequences in the FUSARIUM-ID database (Geiser et al. 2004), which indicated that it was 100% identical to those of F. pernambucanum strain NRRL 32864 (GenBank accession GQ505613), F. pernambucanum strain LC7040 (GenBank accession MK289626), and F. pernambucanum strain LC12149 (GenBank accession MK289588) within the Fusarium incarnatum - F. equiseti species complex 17 (FIESC17). Two phylogenetic trees were established based on the TEF1-α sequences of Fi-1~6 and other Fusarium spp., Fi-1~6 was clustered with the sequences of F. pernambucanum within the FIESC17. Thus, both morphological and molecular criteria supported identification of the strain as F. pernambucanum. A pathogenicity test was conducted to verify Koch's postulates, mycelium agar plugs (6 mm in diameter) were removed from the colony margin of a 3-day-old culture of strain Fi-3, healthy melon fruits were surface-sterilized with 70% ethanol and rinsed twice with sterile-distilled water. Then, the melons were wounded using a sterile inoculating needle to stab and inoculated by a mycelium agar plug of strain Fi-3 on the wound sites. 5 fruits were inoculated in each treatment, and a mycelium-free PDA plug was used as a negative control, repeated 3 times, at 25℃ with high relative humidity for 10 days. The results show disease symptoms similar to those naturally infected fruits on all inoculated melon fruits. The fungus re-isolated from the diseased fruits, showed the same colony morphology as the original isolate. Koch's postulates were repeated three times with the same results. Strain Fi-3 inoculated fruits without wounding remained healthy. To our knowledge, this is the first report of fruit rot of melon caused by F. pernambucanum in China.
Population Genomic Analysis Reveals a Highly Conserved Mitochondrial Genome in Fusarium asiaticum

Abstract:Fusarium asiaticum is one of the pivotal members of the Fusarium graminearum species complex (FGSC) causing Fusarium head blight (FHB) on wheat, barley and rice in large parts of Asia. Besides resulting in yield losses, FHB also causes the accumulation of mycotoxins such as nivalenol (NIV) and deoxynivalenol (DON). The aim of this study was to conduct population studies on F. asiaticum from Southern China through mitochondrial genome analyses. All strains were isolated from wheat or rice from several geographic areas in seven provinces in Southern China. Based on geographic location and host, 210 isolates were selected for next generation sequencing, and their mitogenomes were assembled by GRAbB and annotated to explore the mitochondrial genome variability of F. asiaticum. The F. asiaticum mitogenome proves extremely conserved and variation is mainly caused by absence/presence of introns harboring homing endonuclease genes. These variations could be utilized to develop molecular markers for track and trace of migrations within and between populations. This study illustrates how mitochondrial introns can be used as markers for population genetic analysis. SNP analysis demonstrate the occurrence of mitochondrial recombination in F. asiaticum as was previously found for F. oxysporum and implied for F. graminearum. Furthermore, varying degrees of genetic diversity and recombination showed a high association with different geographic regions as well as with cropping systems. The mitogenome of F. graminearum showed a much higher SNP diversity while the interspecies intron variation showed no evidence of gene flow between the two closely related and sexual compatible species.

Abstract:One of the destructive potyviruses which cause economic damage and serious yield losses to cucurbit crops around the world is Watermelon mosaic potyvirus. In 2016, 305 leaf samples from different cucurbit cultivars with deformation and reduction in leaf size, blistering, mild and severe mosaic symptoms were collected from different cucurbits-growing regions in Northwest of Iran. Total RNA and their cDNA were tested by RT-PCR assay using two sets of specific primers corresponding to the partial sequences of CP and P1 genomic regions, in which approximately 80 out of 305 samples were found to be infected by WMV. DNA fragments of about 780 bp and 545 bp in length were amplified that belonged to the CP and P1 genes, respectively. Phylogenetic trees of WMV isolates were clustered into three main independent groups with significant FST values (> 0.50 and > 0.55) for CP and P1 genes, respectively. dN/dS ratios obtained less than one (< 1) for CP gene that showed the WMV populations have been under the negative selection, whereas for P1 gene, the dN/dS values were calculated > 1 for EM clade containing; China, France, and Italy populations and < 1 for CL and G2 clades; South Korea and Iran populations. This results demonstrated that the WMV evolutionary selection pressure on the P1 gene is dependent on conditions such as the variety of cultivars and the type of cultivation.

Abstract:Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the known five crops cultivated throughout the world after corn, barley, cereals, rice, and wheat, due to its content of high carbohydrates. In developing countries, potatoes are especially had valuable contents as a rich source of starch, vitamins C and B6, and essential amino acids. Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) is one of the prevalent pathogens of potato, causing dry rot in Upper Egypt. In this study, FSSC were isolated and identified from potato tubers based on the morphological and molecular characteristics. F. solani isolates (187) were isolated from infected and noninfected potato tubers collected from various markets in Upper Egypt. Based on the morphology observations, sequence data from amplifying β-tubulin, and specific translation elongation factor (TEF-1α) genes, all of the chosen 88 FSSC isolates were grouped into three major groups (F. keratoplasticum, F. falciforme, and F. solani). All the tested FSSC were able to produce amylases. The selected isolates were examined for their pathogenic ability on healthy potato tubers, which exhibited pathogenic effects; with lesions sizes were quite variable. F. solani SVUFs73 showed a highly virulent effect.

Molecular and Pathogenic Characterization of Fusarium Species Associated with Corm Rot Disease in Saffron from China

Abstract:Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is a commercial spice crop well-known throughout the world, valued for culinary, colorant, and pharmaceutical purposes. In China, Fusarium nirenbergiae was detected as causative agent of saffron corm rot, the most pervasive disease for the first time in 2020. In the present study, 261 Fusarium-like isolates were recovered from 120 rotted corms in four saffron producing fields at Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Yunnan provinces, China, in 2021. A combination of morpho-cultural features and multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) of the concatenated rpb2 (DNA-directed RNA polymerase II largest subunit) and tef1 (translation elongation factor 1-α) partial sequences showed that the isolates from saffron belong to Fusarium nirenbergiae as well as F. commune, and F. annulatum with isolation frequencies of 58.2%, 26.8%, and 14.9%, respectively. Notably, F. commune was more prevalent than F. annulatum in the collected samples. Pathogenicity tests confirmed that both species were pathogenic on saffron corm. This is the first report of F. annulatum and F. commune causing corm rot of saffron, globally. Outcomes of the current research demonstrate that Fusarium spp. associated with saffron corm rot are more diverse than previously reported. Furthermore, some plants were infected by two or more Fusarium species. Our findings broaden knowledge about Fusarium spp. that inflict corm rot and assist the development of control measures.
