Abstract:Our knowledge about the structure of matter and the nature of the interactions between its constituent components follows a hierarchy that closely tracks the evolution of experimental measurements from low to higher and higher energies. For example, with an electron beam of a given energy, one can access the microscopic structure of matter at length scales corresponding to the de-Brogie wave length of the electrons that are being used: λ = 2π × 197.3 Mev·fm/Eγ, were Eγ is the energy of the photon that is exchanged in the experimentally observed process. Abstract:To access information on the internal structure of the nucleon, data from a variety of scattering experiments can be analyzed in regimes where the information factorizes from an otherwise known scattering amplitude. A recent development, promising new insight, is the study of exclusive reactions in the backward kinematical region, where the information can be encoded in transition distribution amplitudes. We model the photon-to-nucleon transition distribution amplitudes, entering the factorized description of backward timelike Compton scattering, using techniques of light-front dynamics to integrate information from a quark model for the photon and the nucleon. Deep Inelastic Lepton Nucleus Scattering from the Light-Cone Quantum-Field Theory

Abstract:The authors show that for deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering, the conditions which validate the impulse approximation are hardly satisfied when using ordinary instant form dynamics in the rest frame of the nucleus, whereas they are well satisfied when using instant form dynamics in the infinite-momentum frame, or using light-front form dynamics in an ordinary frame. Therefore a reliable theoretical treatment of deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering should be performed in the time-ordered perturbation theory in the infinite-momentum frame, or its equivalent, the light-cone perturbation theory in an ordinary frame. To this end, the authors extend the light-cone quantum field theory to the baryon-meson field to establish a relativistic composite model of nuclei. They then apply the impulse approximation to deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering in this model. As a first approximation, they consider only the nucleon degrees of freedom and neglect the Z-graph contributions. It is found that the results seem able to explain the EMC effect in trend but overestimate the ratio of the differential cross section for a bound nucleon to that for a free nucleon by about 8%. Some comparisons of the model with several relevant models are also presented.

Abstract:We present results of simulations of light-nuclei production in Au+Au collisions at a collision energy of sNN=3 GeV within the updated Three-fluid Hydrodynamics-based Event Simulator Extended by UrQMD (ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics) final State interactions (THESEUS). The results are compared with recent STAR data. The light-nuclei production is treated within the thermodynamical approach on an equal basis with hadrons. The only additional parameter related to the light nuclei is the energy density of late freeze-out that imitates the afterburner stage of the collision because the light nuclei do not participate in the UrQMD evolution. It is found that the late freeze-out is preferable for deuterons, tritons, and He3 . Remarkably, the He4 observables are better reproduced with the standard freeze-out. This suggests that the He4 nuclei better survive in the afterburner stage because they are more spatially compact and tightly bound objects. This is an argument in favor of dynamical treatment of light nuclei. The simulations indicate that the collision dynamics is determined by the hadronic phase. The calculated results reveal a not perfect, but good reproduction of the data on bulk observables and directed flow. Abstract:The nuclear-mass dependence of azimuthal cross-section asymmetries with respect to charge and longitudinal polarization of the lepton beam is studied for hard exclusive electroproduction of real photons. The observed beam-charge and beam-helicity asymmetries are attributed to the interference between the Bethe-Heitler and the deeply virtual Compton scattering processes. For various nuclei, the asymmetries are extracted for both coherent and incoherent-enriched regions, which involve different (combinations of) generalized parton distributions. For both regions, the asymmetries are compared to those for a free proton, and no nuclear-mass dependence is found.

Abstract:This paper is essentially a verbatim reconstruction of lectures that I gave at the Los Alamos School on Relativistic Dynamics and Quark Nuclear Physics in 1985. They were published in the school proceedings, but the book is not widely available. The Los Alamos School took place at the height of the first wave of interest in the quark substructure of nuclei, stimulated by the 1983 discovery of the EMC Effect. Interest in this subject has been increasing for years and the prospect of a dedicated Electron Ion Collider within the decade guarantees even greater attention to quarks and gluons in nuclei among both theorists and experimentalists. Recently, to my surprise, I learned that copies of my old lectures have been circulating and been found useful by the relatively few people who know about them. The are, of course, dated: experiments have far outstripped what was available 37 years ago and theory has progressed too. However, the rest frame derivation of the parton model, the derivation and discussion of the convolution formalism for nucleons, nucleon correlations, and other, virtual, constituents of nuclei, and sections on scaling violation and the operator product expansion have aged pretty well and seem to still be useful. With the help and encouragement of Richard Milner, I have recreated the LaTeX files necessary to post the 1985 Lectures on the arXiv, making them available to the nuclear and particle physics community. Apart from correcting some typographical errors, I have made no attempt to edit, improve, or update these lectures. I hope readers will nevertheless find them useful.

Abstract:The present work provides a literature survey of elastic scattering of exotic nuclei from 6He to 17F. It presents a set of definitions that allow different analyses to be put into a common language. A calculational approach is proposed that yields consistent results across different beams and targets so that conclusions concerning the influence of virtual and real breakup as well as transfer couplings on the elastic scattering may be drawn. Calculations of elastic scattering around the Coulomb barrier are emphasised, employing a Pb target whose large Z allows the interplay between nuclear and Coulomb forces to be exploited to maximise possible effects arising from proton or neutron haloes or skins. A series of test calculations is performed and where possible compared to data, demonstrating that there are instances where coupling to transfer channels can have a large effect on the elastic scattering angular distributions. By careful choice of target/beam combination, different aspects of the coupling effects may be emphasised.

Abstract:Semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton scattering off few-nucleon systems is investigated assuming that virtual boson absorption occurs on a hadronic cluster which can be either a two-nucleon correlated pair or a six-quark bag. In both cases the relevance of nuclear effects on forward and backward nucleon emissions is illustrated and the differences expected in the energy distribution of the emitted nucleons are analyzed both at x>1 and x<1.

Abstract:He3 spin-dependent structure functions, g13(x) and g23(x) , which parametrize the hadronic tensor in polarized deep-inelastic scattering, were evaluated within the Poincaré-covariant light-front framework. The Bakamjian-Thomas construction of the Poincaré generators allows us to make use of a realistic He3 wave function, obtained from refined nuclear phenomenological potentials. The same approach was already successfully applied to the He3 and He4 unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering. To investigate the neutron polarized structure functions, g1n and g2n , a readily implementable procedure aimed at extracting the neutron spin structure functions from those of He3 is shown to hold. Moreover, the first moment of g13(x) was evaluated, aiming at providing a valuable check of the Bjorken sum rule. The present analysis is relevant for experiments involving polarized beams planned at future facilities such as electron ion colliders. Abstract:Jefferson Lab (JLab) 12 GeV energy upgrade provides a golden opportunity to perform precision studies of the transverse spin and transverse-momentum-dependent structure in the valence quark region for both the proton and the neutron. In this paper, we focus our discussion on a recently approved experiment on the neutron as an example of the precision studies planned at JLab. The new experiment will perform precision measurements of target Single-Spin Asymmetries (SSA) from semi-inclusive electro-production of charged pions from a 40 cm long transversely polarized 3He target in deep-inelastic-scattering kinematics using 11 and 8.8 GeV electron beams. This new coincidence experiment in Hall A will employ a newly proposed solenoid spectrometer (SoLID). The large acceptance spectrometer and the high polarized luminosity will provide precise 4D (x , z , PT and Q2) data on the Collins, Sivers, and pretzelosity asymmetries for the neutron through the azimuthal angular dependence. The full 2$ \pi$ azimuthal angular coverage in the lab is essential in controlling the systematic uncertainties. The results from this experiment, when combined with the proton Collins asymmetry measurement and the Collins fragmentation function determined from the e+e- collision data, will allow for a quark flavor separation in order to achieve a determination of the tensor charge of the d quark to a 10% accuracy. The extracted Sivers and pretzelosity asymmetries will provide important information to understand the correlations between the quark orbital angular momentum and the nucleon spin and between the quark spin and nucleon spin.

Abstract:Azimuthal asymmetries in exclusive electroproduction of a real photon from an unpolarized deuterium target are measured with respect to beam helicity and charge. They appear in the distribution of these photons in the azimuthal angle phi around the virtual-photon direction, relative to the lepton scattering plane. The extracted asymmetries are attributed to either the deeply virtual Compton scattering process or its interference with the Bethe-Heitler process. They are compared with earlier results on the proton target. In the measured kinematic region, the beam-charge asymmetry amplitudes and the leading amplitudes of the beam-helicity asymmetries on an unpolarized deuteron target are compatible with the results from unpolarized protons.

Abstract:Measuring Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering on the neutron is one of the necessary steps to understand the structure of the nucleon in terms of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). Neutron targets play a complementary role to transversely polarized proton targets in the determination of the GPD $E$. This poorly known and poorly constrained GPD is essential to obtain the contribution of the quarks' angular momentum to the spin of the nucleon. DVCS on the neutron was measured for the first time selecting the exclusive final state by detecting the neutron, using the Jefferson Lab longitudinally polarized electron beam, with energies up to 10.6 GeV, and the CLAS12 detector. The extracted beam-spin asymmetries, combined with DVCS observables measured on the proton, allow a clean quark-flavor separation of the imaginary parts of the GPDs $H$ and $E$.

Abstract:Hard exclusive leptoproduction of real photons from an unpolarized proton target is studied in an effort to elucidate generalized parton distributions. The data accumulated during the years 1996-2005 with the HERMES spectrometer are analyzed to yield asymmetries with respect to the combined dependence of the cross section on beam helicity and charge, thereby revealing previously unseparated contributions from deeply virtual Compton scattering and its interference with the Bethe-Heitler process. The integrated luminosity is sufficient to show correlated dependences on two kinematic variables, and provides the most precise determination of the dependence on only the beam charge.

Abstract:The main objective of this study was to investigate the impact of effective mass splitting on heavy-ion-collision observables. We first analyzed correlations between different nuclear matter parameters obtained from 119 effective Skyrme interaction sets. The values of the correlation coefficients illustrate that the magnitude of effective mass splitting is crucial for tight constraints on the symmetry energy via heavy-ion collisions. The ^86 Kr + ^208 Pb system at beam energies ranging from 25 to 200A MeV was simulated within the framework of the improved quantum molecular dynamics model (ImQMD-Sky). Our calculations show that the slopes of the spectra of ln [ Y (n)/ Y (p)] and ln [ Y (t)/ Y ( ^3 He)], which are the logarithms of the neutron to proton and triton to helium-3 yield ratios, are directly related to effective mass splitting and can be used to probe the effective mass splitting.

Abstract:The Solenoidal Large Intensity Device (SoLID) is a large acceptance spectrometer capable of operating at the luminosity frontier. It is proposed to fully exploit the scientific potential of the continuous electron beam accelerator facility (CEBAF) 12 GeV energy upgrade at Jefferson Lab. Its conceptual design is mature, having passed multiple reviews and been validated by a successful pre-R\&D phase. The envisioned scientific program consists of three avenues of research, namely the 3D momentum imaging of the structure of the nucleon, the origin of the proton mass through the gluonic gravitational form factors (GFFs), and the search of physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. These avenues are complemented by a growing supplemental list of run group experiments that address a variety of important topics.

Abstract:In explosive stellar environments like supernovae, the temperatures are high enough for the production of heavy neutron-deficient nuclei, the socalled p-nuclei. Up to now, the knowledge of the reaction rates of p-nuclei is based on theoretical parameterizations using statistical model calculations. At the bremsstrahlung facility of the superconducting electron accelerator ELBE of FZ Dresden-Rossendorf, we aim to measure the photodisintegration rates of heavy nuclei experimentally. Photoactivation measurements on the astrophysically relevant p-nuclei 92Mo and 144Sm have been performed with bremsstrahlung end-point energies from 10.0 to 16.5 MeV. First experiments on the short-lived decays following the reaction 144Sm(gamma,n) are carried out using a pneumatic delivery system for rapid transport of activated samples. The activation yields are compared with calculations using cross sections from recent Hauser-Feshbach models.
