Abstract:BackgroundA medical student needs to understand the integral theory of continence, clinically elicit urethral hypermobility and understand the surgical principles of repair. A skill development model was designed for the final year curriculum of medical students to explain the basic knowledge of integral theory of continence along with surgical repair of urinary incontinence.AimThe primary objective of the study was to assess the efficacy of simulation-based teaching (SBT) using a home-developed model as compared to video-based teaching (VBT). The secondary objective was to elicit the feedback of students who underwent SBT.MethodsOne hundred fifty-nine medical students participated in the study. Simulation-based teaching (SBT) (n = 81) was compared with video-based teaching (VBT) (n = 78). Pretest and posttest results were used to assess learning. Feedback was obtained to improve the existing teaching method.ResultsIn the VBT group, the posttest values of lowest score, 25th percentile, 75th percentile, and maximum scores were 9, 10, 12, and 15, respectively. In the SBT group, the posttest values of lowest score, 25th percentile, 75th percentile and maximum scores were 11, 12, 14, and 15, respectively. The students were able to comprehend the anatomical landmarks and integral theory of urinary continence better in SBT group. The surgical technique demonstration and hands-on training done on the pelvic model improved their comprehension.ConclusionA home-developed model is an effective and economic tool in training medical students. This prototype model of education can be employed as a teaching tool in other surgical disciplines as well.

Abstract:Abstract Background Simulation in the field of gynecological pelvic examination with educational purposes holds great potential. In the current manuscript we evaluate a 3D printed model of the female pelvis, which improves practical teaching of the gynecological pelvic examination for medical staff. Methods We evaluated the benefit of a 3D printed model of the female pelvis (Pelvisio®) as part of a seminar (“skills training”) for teaching gynecological examination to medical students. Each student was randomly assigned to Group A or B by picking a ticket from a box. Group A underwent the skills training without the 3D printed model. Group B experienced the same seminar with integration of the model. Both groups evaluated the seminar by answering five questions on Likert scales (1–10, 1 = “very little” or “very poor”, 10 equals “very much” or “very good”). Additionally, both groups answered three multiple-choice questions concerning pelvic anatomy (Question 6 to 8). Finally, Group B evaluated the 3D printed model with ten questions (Question 9 to 18, Likert scales, 1–10). Results Two of five questions concerning the students’ satisfaction with the seminar and their gained knowledge showed statistically significant better ratings in Group B (6.7 vs. 8.2 points and 8.1 vs. 8.9 points ( p < 0.001 and p < 0.009). The other three questions showed no statistically significant differences between the traditional teaching setting vs. the 3D printed model ( p < 0.411, p < 0.344 and p < 0.215, respectively). The overall mean score of Question 1 to 5 showed 8.4 points for Group B and 7.8 points for Group A ( p < 0.001). All three multiple-choice questions, asking about female pelvic anatomy, were answered more often correctly by Group B (p < 0.001, p < 0.008 and p < 0.001, respectively). The mean score from the answers to Questions 9 to 18, only answered by Group B, showed a mean of 8.6 points, indicating, that the students approved of the model. Conclusion The presented 3D printed model Pelvisio® improves the education of female pelvic anatomy and examination for medical students. Hence, training this pivotal examination can be supported by a custom designed anatomical model tailored for interactive and explorative learning.
Hernia 3D training model: a new inguinal hernia 3D-printed simulator

Abstract:Objective: Barros et al. demonstrated a 3D printed model that exhibits anatomical representativeness, low cost, and scalability. The model was created based on subtraction data obtained from computed tomography scans. Images were modeled and reconstructed in 3D to display the male inguinal region, typically viewed using a laparoscopic approach. To evaluate the functionality and quality of the anatomical representation of the hernia 3D training model. Methods: A model was created based on subtraction data derived from computed tomography scans of the pelvic bones and lumbar spine using the Blender 3.2.2 software program. Images were modeled and reconstructed in 3D to display the male inguinal region, typically viewed using a laparoscopic approach. Polylactic acid plastic was used to print the model. Some structures were made using ethylene vinyl acetate to enable possible material replacement and model reutilization. Thirty surgeons with various training levels were invited to use the model. Transabdominal inguinal hernioplasty was performed by simulating the same steps as those of a laparoscopic surgery, and the surgeons answered a questionnaire regarding the simulation. Results: Twenty-eight surgeons responded, seven of whom were experts in the treatment of abdominal wall hernias. The model was deemed easy to use, realistic, and anatomically precise, establishing it as a valuable supplement to minimally invasive surgery training. Conclusion: The evaluation of this 3D model was favorable, as it accurately depicted the inguinal region anatomically, while also proving to be cost-effective for training purposes. The model could be a good option, particularly beneficial for training surgeons at the beginning of their careers.

Abstract:Background: This paper presents our experience of running a special study module (SSM) in the second semester of the first year of our 5-year medical programme, worth 10 per cent of that semester's assessment, in which each student constructs an individually selected model illustrating a specific aspect of the teaching course. Method: Each student conceptualises and develops his or her model, to clarify a specific aspect of medical teaching. The use of non-traditional materials in construction is strongly encouraged. Six weeks later, each student presents their model for assessment by four first-year academic teaching staff. The student is quizzed about the concepts that he or she presents, the mode of construction and the materials used. Results: The students' projects broadly cover the disciplines of physiology, biochemistry and anatomy, but are somewhat biased towards anatomy. Students spend on average about 14 hours planning and building their models, at a time when they are busy with other teaching activities. The marks awarded for the projects closely follow a normal distribution. A survey suggests that most students enjoy the exercise and feel that it has enhanced their learning and understanding. Discussion: It is clear from the wide variety of different topics, models and materials that students are highly resourceful in their modelling. Creative activity does not generally play a substantial part in medical education, but is of considerable importance. The development of their models stimulates, informs and educates the constructors, and provides a teaching resource for later use in didactic teaching.
Simulation-Based Medical Education: 3D Printing and the Seldinger Technique

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D)-printed models with high anatomic fidelity are an increasingly viable tool in simulation-based medical education. One advantage of 3D models is they provide enhanced tactile and spatial understanding of complex anatomy to develop technical skills used in minimally invasive procedures. We propose that 3D anatomical models can improve the development of interventional radiology vascular access skills—first described in the 1950s as the Seldinger technique—for pre-clerkship medical students. The early adoption of 3D-printed technology in pre-clinical medical education can lead to improved student engagement and satisfaction when learning procedural techniques. This study involved creating a 3D model of the upper limb vasculature from an anonymized Computed tomography (CT) angiogram, using it as a medical education tool for 31 pre-clinical medical students practicing the Seldinger Technique on a prefabricated venipuncture upper limb, and assessing student satisfaction with this form of learning. Overall, attendees responded positively to the incorporation of the 3D model in medical education to improve their anatomic understanding and application of the Seldinger technique. These results indicate that the use of 3D models in simulation-based medical education can provide benefits in acquiring technical skills and the potential to decrease training costs without harming a patient.

Abstract:In recent decades, three-dimensional (3D) printing as an emerging technology, has been utilized for imparting human anatomy knowledge. However, most 3D printed models are rigid anatomical replicas that are unable to represent dynamic spatial relationships between different anatomical structures. In this study, the data obtained from a computed tomography (CT) scan of a normal knee joint were used to design and fabricate a functional knee joint simulator for anatomical education. Utility of the 3D printed simulator was evaluated in comparison with traditional didactic learning in first-year medical students (n = 35), so as to understand how the functional 3D simulator could assist in their learning of human anatomy. The outcome measure was a quiz comprising 11 multiple choice questions based on locking and unlocking of the knee joint. Students in the simulation group (mean score = 85.03%, ±SD 10.13%) performed significantly better than those in the didactic learning group, P < 0.05 (mean score = 70.71%, ±SD 15.13%), which was substantiated by large effect size, as shown by a Cohen's d value of 1.14. In terms of learning outcome, female students who used 3D printed simulators as learning aids achieved greater improvement in their quiz scores as compared to male students in the same group. However, after correcting for the modality of instruction, the sex of the students did not have a significant influence on the learning outcome. This randomized study has demonstrated that the 3D printed simulator is beneficial for anatomical education and can help in enriching students' learning experience.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Introduction Ventral hernia repair cost the U.S. healthcare system nearly 3 billion dollars annually. Surgical repair is a critical competency for residents yet hernia recurrence rates following mesh-based repair range from 0.8% to 24%. Improving surgical techniques using cadavers is often cost-prohibited for many education programs and limited research exists using simulation models with a corresponding hernia repair curriculum in the graduate medical education setting. This pilot project aimed to develop a low cost, easily reproducible novel abdominal wall reconstruction model and pilot-test the ventral hernia repair curriculum to inform further refinement prior to formal evaluation. Material and Methods This descriptive study pilot-tested the newly refined Abdominal Wall Surgical Skills Operative Model (AWSSOM) simulator for ventral hernia repair with mesh and its corresponding 2-h training curriculum for use at all levels of general surgery graduate medical education. The AWSSOM is a 3D printed synthetic anatomically realistic abdominal wall model consisting of silicone cured layers of skin, fat, rectus abdominis and a posterior rectus sheath fascia, and silicone tubules to simulate lateral neurovascular bundles. The curriculum incorporated didactic content reflecting surgical practice guidelines, hands-on practice, and faculty guidance promoting interactive critical thinking development during task performance. A pre-/post-assessment included a 10-item knowledge test, a 19-item psychomotor assessment, and 4-items confidence survey to examine changes in performance, knowledge, and confidence in competently completing the ventral hernia repair technique. Descriptive statistics were used to report the limited results of six military surgical resident participants and inform further model and curriculum refinement prior to formal evaluation. Results The five-layer AWSSOM model was manufactured in 65 h at a material cost of $87 per model frame, is reusable model, and secure base. Six surgical residents were recruited; only four completed both pre- and post-tests due to resident schedule conflicts. The average increase in knowledge was 25%, although variable changes in confidence were observed over the four program year participants. A larger sample size and a control group are needed to demonstrate curriculum effectiveness at improving knowledge, performance, and confidence in ventral hernia repair with mesh and better delineate if high scores translate to better operative skills. A key improvement requested by residents was a more secure model base for dissection and performance of the hernia repair. Conclusions The novel abdominal wall surgical skills operative model fills an important proof of concept gap in simulation training. It is low cost with the potential to improve cognitive and psychomotor skills, as well as confidence to competently complete ventral hernia repair with mesh in the graduate medical education setting. Prior to formal effectiveness testing, our lessons learned should be addressed in both the model and curriculum. Future studies must include an adequately powered statistical evaluation with a larger sample across all levels of training.

Abstract:Abstract Background Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology enables the translation of 2-dimensional (2D) medical imaging into a physical replica of a patient’s individual anatomy and may enhance the understanding of congenital heart defects (CHD). We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of a spectrum of 3D-printed models in teaching CHD to medical students. Results We performed a prospective, randomized educational procedure to teach fifth year medical students four CHDs (atrial septal defect (ASD, n = 74), ventricular septal defect (VSD, n = 50), coarctation of aorta (CoA, n = 118) and tetralogy of Fallot (ToF, n = 105)). Students were randomized into printing groups or control groups. All students received the same 20 min lecture with projected digital 2D images. The printing groups also manipulated 3D printed models during the lecture. Both groups answered an objective survey (Multiple-choice questionnaire) twice, pre- and post-test, and completed a post-lecture subjective survey. Three hundred forty-seven students were included and both teaching groups for each CHD were comparable in age, sex and pre-test score. Overall, objective knowledge improved after the lecture and was higher in the printing group compared to the control group (16.3 ± 2.6 vs 14.8 ± 2.8 out of 20, p < 0.0001). Similar results were observed for each CHD ( p = 0.0001 ASD group; p = 0.002 VSD group; p = 0.0005 CoA group; p = 0.003 ToF group). Students’ opinion of their understanding of CHDs was higher in the printing group compared to the control group (respectively 4.2 ± 0.5 vs 3.8 ± 0.4 out of 5, p < 0.0001). Conclusion The use of 3D printed models in CHD lectures improve both objective knowledge and learner satisfaction for medical students. The practice should be mainstreamed.

Abstract:The paper presents the DER aggregation solution that was deployed and tested in the frame of the Reflexe demonstrator project. This project brings together a consortium of industrial partners and research laboratories with the objective of examining all aspects of aggregating commercial and industrial flexibility in order to provide energy and ancillary services to the grid through the market. In particular, the battery management system developed in the project allows a back-up battery to be directly integrated into the aggregator's portfolio. This system increases the battery's cost effectiveness by providing an asset that has very valuable flexibility characteristics. To aggregate the battery's flexibility with other demand response in optimal bids, flexibility scheduling algorithms were also developed. Different objective functions were implemented to obtain bids with specific market characteristics. The results from real-life activations conducted during winter 2013 on a portfolio of eight sites, including a Zebra battery, are presented.
Evaluation of a Novel 3D-Printed Urinary Catheterization Simulation Model in Undergraduate Medical Teaching

Abstract:Introduction Urinary catheter insertion is a mandatory procedure taught during medical school. It is imperative that learners are provided the opportunity to practice the procedure, as an improper catheterization technique can result in urethral trauma and contribute to urinary tract infections. Simulation training offers the advantage of avoiding patient harm while allowing learners to feel comfortable to learn from their mistakes, resulting in increased user confidenceand shortening the learning curve for basic procedures. 3D-printed simulation models are anatomically accurate, low-cost, reusable, and effective for teaching basic procedural skills.This study aims to assess the self-rated effectiveness of the 3D model in increasing student confidence and preparedness. Methods Preclerkship undergraduate medical students (n=64) participated in procedural skills training sessions using the 3D-printed model. The students were provided with didactic teaching from a urologist, a hands-on demonstration, and then allowed to practice the procedure using the 3D model. Students were subsequently asked to complete a Likert-type survey to evaluate their experience and the 3D model as an educational tool. Results Respondents felt that the 3D-printed model allowed for the realistic and accurate performance of a urinary catheterization procedure, allowing students to increase their confidence, competence, and knowledge of the technique. Student responses for increasing competence were rated as an average of 4.48±0.62 (where 1 is "not at all effective" and 5 is "very effective"), confidence was rated as 4.40±0.71, and preparedness was reported as 4.15±0.76. Overall, the reported value as a training tool resulted in an average score of 4.62±0.58 (where 1 is "not at all relevant" and 5 is "very relevant"). Conclusions Preclerkship undergraduate medical students found the 3D-printed male catheter insertion model to be a useful learning tool with accurate anatomical representations and technical qualities. The 3D-printed model can be beneficial for increasing learner confidence and preparedness when completing a catheter insertion, allowing for the opportunity to practice on a low-cost, accessible simulator.

Abstract:The most common modes of medical education for congenital heart disease (CHD) rely heavily on 2-dimensional imaging. Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology allows for the creation of physical cardiac models that can be used for teaching trainees. 3D printed cardiac models were created for the following lesions: pulmonic stenosis, atrial septal defect, tetralogy of Fallot, d-transposition of the great arteries, coarctation of the aorta, and hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Medical students participated in a workshop consisting of different teaching stations. At the 3D printed station, students completed a pre- and post-intervention survey assessing their knowledge of each cardiac lesion on a Likert scale. Students were asked to rank the educational benefit of each modality. Linear regression was utilized to assess the correlation of the mean increase in knowledge with increasing complexity of CHD based on the Aristotle Basic Complexity Level. 45 medical students attended the CHD workshop. Abstract:Background: Knowledge of anatomy, one of the core preclinical subjects, is very important for medical undergraduates to have a thorough understanding of various clinical conditions. The traditional method of learning anatomy involves dissection of human cadavers. Medical education system is entering an era in which the traditional teaching methods are being supplemented by newer technological teaching techniques. Simulation based teaching like virtual dissection table “Anatomage” can enhance the understanding and retaining capacity of the subject. The aim of the study is to determine the perception of virtual dissection, among students and staff and to compare the knowledge acquired through simulation based teaching and traditional teaching method. Material and Method: The study comprised of 150 first-year MBBS students who attended regular theory class on ‘joints of musculoskeletal system’ and answered pre-test. The students were divided into two groups, based on teaching method, one which involved the use of a virtual dissection table, and the other, involving the use of cadaveric dissection. The students were made to attempt the post-test. The students were then assessed based on their responses to the pre- and post-tests. Feedback on the overall utility of the table from both students and staff was taken. Results: The mean post-test scores were significantly higher than the mean pre-test scores, irrespective of the teaching method used. (p<0.001) However, the students who were exposed to the virtual dissection table scored comparatively better in the post-test than those exposed to cadaveric dissection. (p<0.001) 100% of the faculty and 93.3% of the students agreed that three-dimensional visualization improves understanding of anatomical structures. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that though cadaveric dissection and virtual dissection enhance learning, the students tend to perform better with virtual dissection. The incorporation of simulation-based teaching into the Anatomy curriculum is essential to supplement traditional cadaveric dissection and ensure engaging as well as high impact delivery of the curriculum. Three-dimensional printing models in congenital heart disease education for medical students: a controlled comparative study

Abstract:Background: This study sought to assess, using subjective (self-assessment) and objective (MCQ) methods, the efficacy of using heart models with ventricular septal defect lesions produced with three-dimensional printing technology in a congenital heart disease curriculum for medical students. Methods: Three computed tomography datasets of three subtypes of ventricular septal defects (perimembranous, subarterial and muscular, one for each) were obtained and processed for building into and printing out 3D models. Then a total of 63 medical students in one class were randomly allocated to two groups (32 students in the experimental, and 31 the control). The two groups participated in a seminar with or without a 3D heart model, respectively. Assessment of this curriculum was carried out using Likert-type questionnaires as well as an objective multiple choice question test assessing both knowledge acquisition, and structural conceptualization. Open-ended questions were also provided for getting advice and suggestion on 3D model utilization in CHD education. Results: With these 3D models, feedback shown in the questionnaires from students in experimental group was significantly more positive than their classmates in the control. And the test results also showed a significant difference in structural conceptualization in favor of the experimental group. Conclusion: It is effective to use heart models created using current 3D printing technology for congenital heart disease education. It stimulates students' interest in congenital heart disease and improves the outcomes of medical education.
Teaching Pterygopalatine Fossa Anatomy Using 3D Images and Physical Model: A Novel Teaching Strategy

Abstract:Medical students often struggle to appreciate the anatomy of the pterygopalatine fossa. This is due to the difficulty in understanding the spatial orientation through textbook diagrams, as well as its deeper location and smaller size in cadaveric specimens. Research has proven that three-dimensional visualization enhances the spatial understanding of anatomy. However, studies have not compared the effectiveness of two different instructional designs that cater to 3D visualization. We conducted a mixed methodology (quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test control design with additional qualitative components) study to compare the effectiveness of a physical model and a 3D image in small-group teaching. The students were divided into control and intervention groups based on their roll numbers. The control group utilized a series of 3D images delivered through Microsoft PowerPoint software on computers. The students in the intervention group used a physical model made of cardboard, with colored wires representing the neurovascular structures. We used 20 spatial anatomy-based multiple-choice questions (MCQs) to assess knowledge acquisition before and after the small group discussion. Additionally, we utilized a validated 10-item feedback questionnaire to evaluate participants' perception of the teaching sessions. There was no significant difference in the knowledge gain and perception scores between the control and intervention groups. These findings suggest that a well-designed 3D image can provide an equivalent learning outcome and level of satisfaction compared to a physical model. An Opportunity to See the Heart Defect Physically: Medical Student Experiences of Technology-Enhanced Learning with 3D Printed Models of Congenital Heart Disease

Abstract:Abstract Three-dimensional (3D) printing is increasingly used in medical education and paediatric cardiology. A technology-enhanced learning (TEL) module was designed to accompany 3D printed models of congenital heart disease (CHD) to aid in the teaching of medical students. There are few studies evaluating the attitudes and perceptions of medical students regarding their experience of learning about CHD using 3D printing. This study aimed to explore senior medical students’ experiences in learning about paediatric cardiology through a workshop involving 3D printed models of CHD supported by TEL in the form of online case-based learning. A mixed-methods evaluation was undertaken involving a post-workshop questionnaire ( n = 94 students), and focus groups ( n = 16 students). Focus group and free-text questionnaire responses underwent thematic analysis. Questionnaire responses demonstrated widespread user satisfaction; 91 (97%) students agreed that the workshop was a valuable experience. The highest-level satisfaction was for the physical 3D printed models, the clinical case-based learning, and opportunity for peer collaboration. Thematic analysis identified five key themes: a variable experience of prior learning, interplay between physical and online models, flexible and novel workshop structure, workshop supported the learning outcomes, and future opportunities for learning using 3D printing. A key novel finding was that students indicated the module increased their confidence to teach others about CHD and recommended expansion to other parts of the curriculum. 3D printed models of CHD are a valuable learning resource and contribute to the richness and enjoyment of medical student learning, with widespread satisfaction.
Usage of 3D models of tetralogy of Fallot for medical education: impact on learning congenital heart disease

Abstract:BackgroundCongenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common human birth defect, and clinicians need to understand the anatomy to effectively care for patients with CHD. However, standard two-dimensional (2D) display methods do not adequately carry the critical spatial information to reflect CHD anatomy. Three-dimensional (3D) models may be useful in improving the understanding of CHD, without requiring a mastery of cardiac imaging. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of 3D models on how pediatric residents understand and learn about tetralogy of Fallot following a teaching session.MethodsPediatric residents rotating through an inpatient Cardiology rotation were recruited. The sessions were randomized into using either conventional 2D drawings of tetralogy of Fallot or physical 3D models printed from 3D cardiac imaging data sets (cardiac MR, CT, and 3D echocardiogram). Knowledge acquisition was measured by comparing pre-session and post-session knowledge test scores. Learner satisfaction and self-efficacy ratings were measured with questionnaires filled out by the residents after the teaching sessions. Comparisons between the test scores, learner satisfaction and self-efficacy questionnaires for the two groups were assessed with paired t-test.ResultsThirty-five pediatric residents enrolled into the study, with no significant differences in background characteristics, including previous clinical exposure to tetralogy of Fallot. The 2D image group (n = 17) and 3D model group (n = 18) demonstrated similar knowledge acquisition in post-test scores. Residents who were taught with 3D models gave a higher composite learner satisfaction scores (P = 0.03). The 3D model group also had higher self-efficacy aggregate scores, but the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.39).ConclusionPhysical 3D models enhance resident education around the topic of tetralogy of Fallot by improving learner satisfaction. Future studies should examine the impact of models on teaching CHD that are more complex and elaborate.

Abstract:Background: Simulation-based medical education (SBME) and three-dimensional printed (3DP) models are increasingly used in continuing medical education and clinical training. However, our understanding of their role and value in improving trainees' understanding of the anatomical and surgical procedures associated with liver surgery remains limited. Furthermore, gender bias is also a potential factor in the evaluation of medical education. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the educational benefits trainees receive from the use of novel 3DP liver models while considering trainees' experience and gender. Methods: Full-sized 3DP liver models were developed and printed using transparent material based on anonymous CT scans. We used printed 3D models and conventional 2D CT scans of the liver to investigate thirty trainees with various levels of experience and different genders in the context of both small group teaching and formative assessment. We adopted a mixed methods approach involving both questionnaires and focus groups to collect the views of different trainees and monitors to assess trainees' educational benefits and perceptions after progressing through different training programs. We used Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and Likert scales to support thematic analysis of the responses to the questionnaires by trainees and monitors, respectively. Descriptive analyses were conducted using SPSS statistical software version 21.0. Results: Overall, a 3DP model of the liver is of great significance for improving trainees' understanding of surgical procedures and cooperation during operation. After viewing the personalized full-sized 3DP liver model, all trainees at the various levels exhibited significant improvements in their understanding of the key points of surgery (p < 0.05), especially regarding the planned surgical procedure and key details of the surgical procedures. More importantly, the trainees exhibited higher levels of satisfaction and self-confidence during the operation regardless of gender. However, with regard to gender, the results showed that the improvement of male trainees after training with the 3DP liver model was more significant than that of female trainees in understanding and cooperation during the surgical procedure, while no such trend was found with regard to their understanding of the base knowledge. Conclusion: Trainees and monitors agreed that the use of 3DP liver models was acceptable. The improvement of the learning effect for practical skills and theoretical understanding after training with the 3DP liver models was significant. This study also indicated that training with personalized 3DP liver models can improve all trainees' presurgical understanding of liver tumours and surgery and males show more advantage in understanding and cooperation during the surgical procedure as compared to females. Full-sized realistic 3DP models of the liver are an effective auxiliary teaching tool for SBME teaching in Chinese continuing medical education.

Abstract:Objective To explore the application and effect of three-dimensional animation teaching software combined with case based learning ( CBL ) in inguinal hernia clinical teaching . Methods Totally 30 eight-year program students of Grade 2008 of Peking University People's Hos-pital were randomly divided into the teaching software combined with the CBL group(n=15) and tradi-tional teaching group(n=15). Three-dimensional animation teaching software was used to simulate the whole process of inguinal hernia anatomy and physiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diag-nosis and treatment in teaching software combined with CBL group. CBL teaching was conducted by setting problems through typical case and case discussion under the guidance of the teacher . The teacher-centered teaching, teaching rounds and watching operation were used in the traditional teaching group . Theory examination and physical examination were given at the end of the study and achieve-ment differences were compared between 2 groups. Questionnaire was used to investigate students' evaluation of the teaching method in teaching software combined with the CBL group and data were statistically described using t test. Results Theoretical exam score of the teaching software combined with the CBL group was (94.80±1.54), superior to the traditional teaching group(86.10±1.86), and the difference was statistically significant(t=8.242, P=0.000). Clinical skill test score of the teaching software combined with the CBL group was (91.10±1.01), superior to the traditional teaching group (85.90±2.17), and the difference was statistically significant(t=8.531, P=0.000). The survey result showed that more than 80.00% students thought that this teaching method could arouse students' learning enthusiasm, promote their mastery and application of knowledge, strengthen their self-study ability, cultivating their clinical thinking and improving their learning efficiency. Conclusion The teaching method of three dimensional animation teaching software combined with CBL , as a new teaching mode, helps to improve the quality of teaching.
