Abstract:Jiuzhaigou scenic area, one of the scenic spots in“World Natural Heritage List”, has a long history and important ecological environment resources. However, with the continuous development of the tourism industry and the impact of earthquake disasters, the problem of heavy metal chemical pollution has become increasingly prominent. This paper takes the spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metal chemical pollution in Jiuzhaigou scenic spot as the research object, adopts the methods of literature analysis, field investigation and mathematical statistics, etc., based on the brief introduction of the general situation of Jiuzhaigou scenic spot and the relationship between earthquake and heavy metal pollution, and adopts field survey. Using the method of regular grid-system deployment, 133 sampling sites in the Jiuzhaigou scenic spot were systematically investigated, and soil properties, pH values, and heavy metal contents and their spatial distribution characteristics were analyzed. The study found that the main heavy metal pollution in the Jiuzhaigou scenic spot are Pb, Cu, and Zn, which are mainly concentrated in roads, residential areas and scenic green areas. Finally, some suggestions on the sustainable distribution of scenic spots were proposed based on the investigation results of the spatial distribution of heavy metal chemical pollution in Jiuzhaigou scenic spot.
The Spatial Distribution Pattern of Heavy Metals and Risk Assessment of Moso Bamboo Forest Soil Around Lead–zinc Mine in Southeastern China

Abstract:Southeast China serves as a vast habitat of moso bamboo situated adjacent to the mining area. Heavy metal contamination of the soils poses a great threat to bamboo plantations in the region. The present study aimed at determination of the heavy metals concentration in mined soils and bamboo shoot, the spatial distribution pattern of heavy metals in soils and the spatial correlations between heavy metal pollution in soils and bamboo shoots, and risk assessment of metals in soil. The soil samples (97) were collected from the study area to assess the status of metal pollution in soils adjacent to bamboo plantations around the mining area of southeast China. The median soil Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn concentrations were 0.50 mg kg(-1), 58.31 mg kg(-1), 27.89 mg kg(-1), 405.89 mg kg(-1), 286.32 mg kg(-1), 209.53 mg kg(-1), respectively. Correlation analysis suggested that soil metal species except Cr mostly exceeded the threshold values and accumulated as a result of mining activities. In addition, the mean heavy metals concentrations in moso bamboo rhizome were very low from the study area; the metals could be based on their prevalence as: Zn > Mn > Cu > Pb > Cr > Cd. The spatial statistics and autocorrelation analysis showed that most of the soil heavy metals represented a geographically increasing concentric trend (from the surrounding area to mining center). A low correlation existed between metals concentrations of soil and bamboo shoots. Pb concentrations in bamboo shoots exceeded the standard limits and supposed to have spatial correlation with its concentration in soil. The metal distributions in soil were held responsible for their bioaccumulation in edible portions of vegetables. The risk assessment confirmed that about 60.82% of the study area suffered from metal contamination. Assessing Soil and Plant Pollution by Abandoned Rural Waste Dumping Sites in Ningbo, China

Abstract:This paper reports the concentration of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) in the soils and rices surrounding the abandoned rural waste dumping sites in Ningbo. Igeo (geoaccumulation index) was calculated to assess the contamination degree of heavy metals in soils. The mean contents of Cr, Cu, Cd, Zn and Pb of soils were 33.3, 24.1, 1.5, 118.9 and 45.6 mg/(kg DW) (dry weight), respectively. All of them were much higher than that of the reference value (i.e. CK), but there were no coherent trend of the metal contents within 1-120m distance from the dumping site. Igeo of heavy metals reveals the order of Cd>Cu>Cr>Pb>Zn, and the contamination assessment of soils using Igeo indicate the moderate Cd pollution, while the soils were unpolluted-moderately overall by Cr, Cu, Zn as well as Pb. The heavy metal contents in root, stem & leaf and rice grains were all remarkable higher than that of the CK at 20-120 m distances, and the heavy metal contents in root were evidently much higher than other plant parts, while those in rice grain were lowest, indicating the great bioaccumulation trend of heavy metals. Although the metal contents in the rice grain were within the legislation limit, its bioaccumulation trend of heavy metals was remarkable, whose contents were 4.38-fold for Cr, 1.76-fold for Cu, 1.28-fold for Zn, 2.67-fold for Cd and 3.03-fold for Pb higher than that of reference value, respectively. Finally, we proposed a decentralized in-situ restoration approach for the dumping sites.
Tree-ring Recorded Variations of 10 Heavy Metal Elements over the Past 168 Years in Southeastern China

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution is a serious concern in the urban area of China. Understanding metal pollution history is crucial for setting up appropriate measures for pollution control. Herein, we report a record of concentrations of 10 heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd, Pb, Co, and Sr) in Pinus massoniana tree rings from Fuzhou City over the past 168 years, which represents the longest tree-ring chronology of heavy metals in China. The studied metals displayed contrasting distribution patterns. Among them, Mn and Sr showed the strongest migration trend with peak concentrations at the pith. Co, Cd, and Pb also showed distinctively high concentrations near the boundary between heartwood and sapwood. Ni, Cu, Cr, and Fe showed an increasing trend possibly due to migration toward bark caused by physiological activities and increasing tourism activities and traffic pollution. The other elements (Cr, Fe, and Zn) with low migration revealed the historical pollution possibly discharged by the Fuzhou Shipping Bureau and other anthropogenic activities. Strong correlations between Cu content and temperature were found, which provides an alternative tree-ring proxy for climate reconstruction. This study provides a long-term perspective of the joint impacts of physiological, environmental, and climatological factors on the concentrations of heavy metals in southeastern China.
Pine needles as urban atmospheric pollution indicators: Heavy metal concentrations and Pb isotopic source identification

Abstract:Pine needles are reliable passive bio-samplers that can be used to monitor atmospheric pollution levels. This study applied Pb isotope and multivariate statistical analyses to pine needles to examine the characteristics, sources, and ecological risks of atmospheric heavy metal pollution in the cities of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, China. The heavy metal concentrations were higher than those measured in pine needles elsewhere in the world. They were higher in the metropolitan city (Wuhan) than in the medium-sized city (Yichang) and lowest in the natural setting (Shennongjia Forestry District), which is consistent with trends in urbanization and industrialization. Principal component analysis grouped the metals into three main sets associated with industrial activities and traffic sources. The Pb composition determined the main anthropogenic Pb sources were vehicle exhaust and industrial activities related to the lead-zinc ore, only a few of which were coal combustion. Three risk assessment indexes (pollution load index, ecological risk index, and bioconcentration factor) suggest that atmospheric heavy metals in the study area pose moderate environmental and health risks.

Abstract:With the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization, the issue of soil environmental pollution is becoming more and more prominent, especially concerning heavy metal contamination, which has garnered significant scholarly attention. The surface watershed formed by waterline is influenced by various factors such as topography, industrial emissions, and agricultural runoff, resulting in a complex process of migration and accumulation of heavy metal elements from multiple sources. In this study, the pollution characteristics and sources of heavy metal elements Hg, As, Pb, Ni, Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn in 165 surface soil samples from the Manghe River watershed in Jiyuan City were comprehensively analyzed using a variety of methods, including statistics, geostatistics, enriched factor analysis and the Positive Matrix Factorization Model (PMF). The results showed that the concentrations of Hg, Cd, As, Cu, Pb and Zn exceeded their corresponding background values with varying degrees of enrichment. Notably, the average contents of Cd, Hg and Pb were 26.70 times, 3.69 times and 4.49 times higher than those in Chinese soils on average, respectively, showing obvious enrichment characteristics. Moreover, there were distinct spatial distribution patterns for each heavy metal element; Ni and Cr exhibited similar trends mainly controlled by the parent material, while human activities significantly affect the other six elements forming high-value areas around mining and related industries. It is noteworthy that Cu, Hg and Zn were influenced by dominant wind direction in autumn and winter, forming sub-high-value zones in southern forested areas; meanwhile, Cu and Zn were also influenced by agricultural fertilizer application as well as surface runoff, leading to secondary high-value areas in the dryland areas. Further analysis revealed a significant positive correlation among these heavy metal elements, suggesting that they may share common sources. Through the PMF Model, four main factors were identified, with factor 2 (36.25%), factor 1 (23.00%), factor 3 (21.20%) and factor 4 (19.55%) ranked in descending order of contribution rate. The heavy metal pollution in the study area was attributed to anthropogenic activities and natural factors, accounting for 63.75% and 36.25%, respectively. Coal mining, chemical industry smelting, vehicle emissions and excessive use of agrochemicals were identified as the main sources of heavy metal pollution. These pollutants entered the soil through direct emissions, atmospheric deposition, transportation and agricultural activities, exerting a significant impact on the soil environment. Therefore, delving into the spatial distribution pattern of soil heavy metal pollution and precise analysis of its sources are of great importance for effective treatment and remediation of soil heavy metal pollution in small watersheds, maintaining healthy soil ecology and safeguarding human health.

An Evaluation of Heavy Metal Pollution Within Historic Cultural Strata at Liangwangcheng Site in the North of Jiangsu Province

Abstract:The concentrations of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr and Ni in soil samples collected from Liangwangcheng site in the north of Jiangsu Province were determined to reconstruct the heavy metal contamination contexts of different historic periods over the last 5,000 years. The results showed that the observed individual heavy metal pollution level sequence was: Cu > Zn > Pb > Ni > Cr. For an individual heavy metal, the contamination levels in different periods were different. The pollution of Cu peaked during the Warring State, Northern Dynasty and Song Dynasty, and Zn peaked during the Northern Dynasty. The pollution levels of Pb in cultural layers differed insignificantly. There were little sign of change in the pollution levels of Ni and Cr during historic periods. The comprehensive heavy metal contamination levels increased since Dawenkou period, peaked during the Warring State with a comprehensive heavy metal level of moderate pollution, and decreased after that period. The enrichment factors(EF) were used to obtain information of heavy metal sources. The EFs showed that most of Zn and Cu came from human activities and Cr, Ni nearly came from the crust weathering. Pb originated both from human activities and the crust weathering. Pb EFs gradually increased since the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, which coould be coincide with the more and more use of leaded tool and the more sophisticated technology of iron melting.
Heavy metal pollution, ecological risk, spatial distribution, and source identification in sediments of the Lijiang River, China

Abstract:The Lijiang River is of great ecological and environmental importance for Guilin City, which is located in the karst area of southeast China. Given its importance, a detailed evaluation of the heavy metals (HMs) in the river sediment is required. For the first time, 61 sediment samples were collected along the entire Lijiang River to determine pollution level and ecological risk posed by 10 HMs (Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, As, Hg, and Cd). These were assessed using the geo-accumulation index, potential ecological risk index, and modified degree of contamination. The results showed that the mean concentrations of the majority of HMs exceeded their corresponding background values and followed the trend: midstream > downstream > upstream. Based on the spatial distributions and pollution indices of the 10 HMs, the Lijiang River was found to have a high accumulation of Cd, Hg, Zn, and Pb in the sediments. The midstream area was the most polluted with respect to Cd and Hg, and also posed a relatively higher potential ecological risk than the downstream and upstream areas. The sources of the assessed HMs were inferred based on a correlation analysis and principal component analysis, which identified both natural and anthropogenic sources. A higher pollution potential was associated with Cd, Hg, Pb, and Zn in the midstream and downstream areas due to higher organic and carbonate content, urbanization, agricultural activities, and leisure activities (e.g., boating and cruises). In contrast, natural erosion and weathering processes were responsible for the HM concentrations in the upstream area. The findings of this study will help the local authorities to protect the important water resource of the Lijiang River.

Abstract:The development of Earth's critical zone concept has strengthened the capacity of environmental science to better solve real-world problems, such as metal(loid) pollution in the remote alpine areas. The selected metal(loid) contents in soil, moss, and water were investigated to explore the geochemical distribution patterns, pollution levels, and potential ecological risks of metal(loid)s in the Shennongjia (SNJ) alpine critical zone of central China. The distribution of metal(loid)s in different spheres had horizontal and vertical differences. The maximum V, Ni, and Zn contents in water occurred at the sampling sites close to the Hohhot-Beihai Highway, while Dajiuhu Lake had the maximum Cu, Cr, and Mn contents. Most metal(loid) contents in the mosses showed an increasing trend from the northeast low-altitude area to the southwest high-altitude area, while As, Co, V, Ni, Cr, and Zn in soil decreased significantly with altitude and were enriched near the service areas and the highway. The contents of water Co and Ni, soil Cu and Mn, and moss As were evenly distributed and showed no significant differences with altitude. The enrichment factors, pollution index, Nemerow integrated pollution index, geo-accumulation index, heavy metal pollution index, contamination factor, and potential ecological risk index (PERI) were used to assess the pollution levels and ecological risks of SNJ soil, water, and atmosphere. The overall pollution levels of SNJ soil, moss, and water were low to moderate, low, and low, respectively. Soil V, Cu, Zn, moss As, Co, V, and Dajiuhu Lake water Mn were the main pollution factors. The ecological risks in the three spheres of the SNJ alpine critical zone were low to moderate, and As, Co, and V were the most critical potential ecological risk factors. The metal(loid)s pollution problem caused by the continuous development of tourism needs further attention.
Human influence on heavy metal distribution in the Upper Lake Nansi sediments, Shandong Province, China

Abstract:Core and surface sediment samples were collected from three sub-lakes (Lake Nanyang, Lake Dushan and Lake Zhaoyang) in the Lake Nansi Basin, Shandong Province. In order to reveal the characteristics of spatial and historical distribution of heavy metals in different sublakes of the Upper Lake Nansi, heavy metal (As, Cr, Cu, Hg, K, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, Al, Fe, Ti and V) concentrations of sediment samples were investigated. Based on the activity of 137 Cs in the sediments, the modern accumulation rate of Lake Nansi sediments is 3.5 mm/a. Our results show that the whole Upper Lake Nansi has been already polluted by heavy metals, among which Lake Nanyang has been polluted seriously by mercury, as well as by lead and arsenic, while Lake Dushan has been most seriously polluted by lead and arsenic. Historical variation of heavy metal (Cr, Cu, K, Ni, Zn, Al, Fe, Ti and V) concentrations shows an abrupt shift in 1962, resulting in a division of two periods: from 1957 to 1962 when metal enrichment increased with time, and from 1962 to 2000 when it decreased with time, while that of some anthropogenic elements such as Hg, Pb and Mn tend to increase toward the surface. However, the variation trend of As in the sediments is different from that of Hg, Pb and Mn, with its maximum value appearing in 1982. Since 1982 the concentrations of As have decreased due to the forbidden use of arsenite pesticides. This variation trend revealed changes in manner of human activity (coal combustion, waste discharges from both industries and urban sewage) within the catchment during different periods.
Spatial distribution and source apportionment of soil heavy metals in the areas affected by non-ferrous metal slag field in southwest China

Abstract:The spatial distribution and source analysis of heavy metals in soil are of great significance for the risk assessment and control of heavy metal pollution. Herein, a total of 87 topsoil samples (0–30 cm) were collected in the areas adjacent to a non-ferrous metal slag field of Gejiu City, Yunnan Province. The typical heavy metal concentrations, available phosphorus, available potassium, ammonium nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and pH in each soil sample were determined. Based on the above basic data, distribution and origins of heavy metals was analyzed. The results indicated that the mean contents of Pb, As, Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr in the topsoil of the study site were 247.82, 204.36, 104.83, 411.38, 29.73 and 67.59 mg kg -1 , respectively. Exception of the Ni element, the contents of the remaining five heavy metals surpassed their respective background levels in study site. Especially, As element (with the highest accumulation effect) is 11.1l times of the background level, and the remaining four elements are 1.04–6.10 times of the background level in Yunnan. Single factor pollution index showed that the pollution degree of Pb, Cu and Zn was light, and the accumulation of As was a great threat to soil quality. Furthermore, the percentages of sites at mild pollution, moderate pollution and heavy pollution levels were 16.09%, 26.09% and 63.22%, respectively. Additionally, The order of potential ecological hazard degree of soil in the survey area was As > Pb > Cu = Ni > Zn = Cr. The spatial dispersion of heavy metals within the study region is impacted by both natural phenomena and human activities. The areas with severe pollution were the mining area in the northwest and planting sites in the east, middle and south of the study area. The main contribution sources of Ni were the mixed sources of natural parent material and industrial activities. The heavy metal element largely contributed by industrial activities and transportation is Pb. The main sources of metals As, Cu and Zn are the integrated sources of agricultural and industrial activities. The main source of Cr is natural source. Therefore, these useful results can guide the heavy metal pollution control and restoration of study site and this research work can also be used to other similar metal slag field and its affected area.

Pollution assessment and spatial variation of soil heavy metals in Lixia River Region of Eastern China

Abstract:PurposeThe effect of soil heavy metals on crops and human health is an important research topic in some fields (Agriculture, Ecology et al.). In this paper, the objective is to understand the pollution status and spatial variability of soil heavy metals in this study area. These results can help decision-makers apportion possible soil heavy metal sources and formulate pollution control policies, effective soil remediation, and management strategies.Materials and methodsA total of 212 topsoil samples (0–20 cm) were collected and analyzed for eight heavy metals (Cd, Hg, As, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, and Ni) from agricultural areas of Yingbao County in Lixia River Region of Eastern China, by using four indices (pollution index (PI), Nemerow pollution index (PIN), index of geo-accumulation (Igeo), Ei/risk index (RI)) and cluster analysis to assess pollution level and ecological risk level of soil heavy metals and combining with geostatistics to analyze the concentration change of heavy metals in soils. GS+ software was used to analyze the spatial variation of soil heavy metals, and the semi-variogram model is the main tool to calculate the spatial variability and provide the input parameters for the spatial interpolation of kriging. Arcgis software was used to draw the spatial distribution of soil heavy metals.Results and discussionThe result indicated that the eight heavy metals in soils of this area had moderate variations, with CVs ranging from 23.51 to 64.37 %. Single pollution index and Nemerow pollution index showed that about 2.7 and 1.36 % of soil sampling sites were moderately polluted by Cd and Zn, respectively. The pollution level of soil heavy metals decreased in the order of Cd > Zn > Pb > As > Cu > Cr > Ni > Hg. The Igeo values of heavy metals in this area decreased in the order of Zn > Cd > As > Pb > Cu > Cr > Hg > Ni. According to the Ei index, except Cd that was in the moderate ecological risk status, other heavy metals in soils were in the light ecological risk status, and the level of potential ecological risk (RI) of soil sampling sites of the whole area was light.ConclusionsThe results of four indices and the analysis of spatial variation indicated that the contents of Cd and Zn were contributed mainly by anthropogenic activities and located in the south-east of this study area. However, the contents of Hg, As, Cu, Pb, Cr, and Ni in soils were primarily influenced by soil parent materials.

Abstract:Sediments serve as a crucial accumulation site for pollutants, and the source and sink effects of sediment pollutants significantly influence the overlying water. In this research, the concentrations of heavy metals in the sediments of Jinmucuo Lake were investigated. The pollution levels and ecological risks of the heavy metals were assessed via the geoaccumulation index and potential ecological risk index, and the potential sources were identified via multivariate statistical methods. Results revealed that the mean concentrations of cadmium, chromium, copper, zinc, nickel, arsenic and mercury exceeded the soil background values in Tibet, and each element generally tended to increase with decreasing depth in the sediment cores. Heavy metals were mainly distributed in the estuaries of the western part of the lake. Moreover, the geoaccumulation index revealed that mercury pollution was severe, followed by nickel and copper. The potential ecological risk index revealed that Jinmucuo Lake was a highly strong ecological risk and that mercury was the most important ecological risk factor. Multivariate statistical analysis indicated that chromium and nickel pollution was influenced by natural factors and anthropogenic activities, while geothermal activity, river inputs and atmospheric transmission were the main sources of mercury and arsenic. Moreover, cadmium, lead, copper and zinc pollution was mainly affected by transportation and high background values. The results provide an important reference for the ecological and environmental protection of Jinmucuo Lake.

Abstract:West Guangdong is an important ecological barrier in Guangdong province, so understanding the spatial patterns and sources of heavy metal pollution of forest soil in this region is of great significance for ecological protection. In this study, the concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ni) in forest soil were determined. Geostatistics, single-factor pollution index (PI), potential ecological risk index (RI), principal component analysis (PCA), and Pearson's correlation analysis were used to evaluate and analyze the characteristics of heavy metal pollution of forest soil. The results showed that the average concentration did not exceed the critical value. Cd, Pb, and Cu were enriched in southwest Xinxing County, while Zn and Ni were enriched in most areas of the Yunan and Yuncheng districts. Two groups of heavy metals from different sources were identified by PCA and a correlation analysis. Cd, Pb, and Cu in their respective enrichment areas were mainly from marble and cement production, whereas Zn and Ni were primarily from transportation and chemical fertilizer. Most of the study area was safe or slightly polluted while the heavy metal-enriched areas were moderately to severely polluted. The potential ecological risk was at a lower level in the study area but moderate in southwest Xinxing County. In summary, human factors impact the spatial patterns and ecological risks of heavy metals in forest soil. This study provides a scientific basis for forest soil pollution control and ecological protection.

Abstract:Baihua Lake, a man-made reservoir, is one of the five drinking water sources for Guiyang City in China's southwestern province of Guizhou. In the present research, the distribution and accumulation characteristics of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, As, Cu and Zn) for the sediment of this lake were analyzed by examination of 10 recently collected samples. A method based on toxic-response factor was applied to assess the potential ecological risk of these heavy metals to the water body. For comparison, the two sets of reference data representing the pre-industrial and the local baseline pollution levels were employed to derive the accumulating coefficients for the heavy metals under study. The calculated potential ecological risk indices show that the lake was polluted by heavy metals and both cadmium and arsenic loadings were critical factors responsible for the ecological hazards posed to Baihua Lake by the five elements.

Abstract:It is of great significance to study the degree and source of soil heavy metal pollution in geological high background value area for remediation of local contaminated soil. The 0 - 20 cm topsoil was taken around the mining area, and the contents of Pb, Zn, Ni, Cd, Hg, Cu and As in the soil were measured. Single-factor pollution index, Nemeiro comprehensive pollution index and potential ecological risk index were used to evaluate the degree of heavy metal pollution and ecological risk. Finally, multivariate statistical analysis was used to analyze the sources of soil heavy metals. The results show that the measured elements are polluted to different degrees, mainly due to the ecological environment problems caused by extensive mining development methods and inefficient utilization of resources. The key link is the release of pollutants at the source. Effectively blocking the release at the source can cut off the possibility of pollutants entering the food chain and the circulation of materials in the ecosystem. The results of potential ecological risk index showed that the potential ecological damage of seven heavy metals was ranked as follows: Cd (97.67) > Hg (68.97) > As (14.29) > Pb (11.55) > Ni (4.62) > Zn (1.61) > Cu (1.45) had a high ecological risk coefficient, and the potential comprehensive ecological risk index was 200.16 and the degree was medium. Principal component analysis shows that the sources of heavy metals are divided into Pb, Cd, As, Zn and Hg mainly from human activities such As mining, while Ni and Cu mainly come from soil parent materials, mining and agricultural activities.

Abstract:Soil heavy metal pollution is one of the hottest topics in soil environmental research. There are a large number of small abandoned metal mines in China. Due to the lack of timely restoration and treatment, the heavy metal concentration in the soil within these mining areas often exceeds the local background levels, facilitating pollution spread to other natural factors such as precipitation, resulting in a wider extent of continuous contamination. This paper investigates the current status of heavy metal pollution in an abandoned small lead-zinc mine, particularly examining the concentrations of 10 specific heavy metals (V, Cr, Ni, Zn, As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Cu, Co) in soil samples. Additionally, it explores the extent of contamination caused by these heavy metals within the area. Besides, principal component analysis and positive matrix factorization model (PMF) were adopted to determine the sources of these heavy metals. The risk assessment of the pollution status was also carried out. The provision of a scientific basis for mining area management under similar conditions holds significant importance. The results indicate a significant positive correlation among the majority of these 10 heavy metals in soil. The presence of these heavy metals in the soil within the concentrator and tailings reservoir area primarily stems from mining operations, construction activities, and discharges from the power system. Hg, Pb, Zn, and As in the surrounding agricultural land mainly come from the heavy metal spillover from the mining area. Furthermore, the area is plagued by severe contamination from As and Pb. The Nemerow comprehensive index method has confirmed substantial pollution in both the concentrator and tailings reservoir. Additionally, there exists a substantial ecological risk ranging from moderate to high.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution in soil is a growing concern, and little is known about how it is distributed in the soils of different districts with different land uses on a broad scale. A total of 873 surface soil samples (0- to 20-cm depth) were collected in the Huishan and Xin districts of Wuxi City. The pollution levels and sources of heavy metals in the two districts were identified using multivariate statistics and spatial analysis methods, and the results are discussed in this paper. The concentration of heavy metals in soils, particularly Hg, was higher in Xin, where there are many industrial parks. The concentrations of As, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn were higher than the corresponding background values in the two districts, and the soil Hg in Xin exceeded the grade II threshold value of the Chinese Environmental Quality Standard for Soils. Natural resources (e.g., geogenic and pedogenic factors) were predominately responsible for the heavy metal concentration in Huishan soils, but anthropogenic activities (industrial production and discharge) were the primary factors for soil heavy metal pollution in Xin. The soil heavy metal concentration in forestlands was high in Huishan, and among these metals Hg and As reached a moderate level of pollution [enrichment factor (EF) > 2]. No pollution or minimal pollution happened in response to other land uses. In Xin, the Hg in cultivated land, rural-residential land, and underwater sediments reached a moderate level of pollution (EF > 2), and the other heavy metal levels were low (EF < 2) in response to different land uses.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution of soil in agricultural areas is the most prominent environmental pollution problem in China, seriously affecting human health and food security. It has become one of the environmental problems to which all sectors of society attach great importance. Soil heavy metals in the weathering area of hazardous geological bodies in southwest China have naturally high background attributes. Therefore, ecological risk assessment and analysis of potential sources of soil heavy metals in southwest China is of great significance for soil health management, soil heavy metal pollution control and territorial spatial planning. In this study, we collected 787 soil samples (0–20 cm) in Xuanwei County in China and analyzed the concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn in soils. Igeo, RI, HI and CR were used to calculate the pollution levels, ecological risks and human health risks. Additionally, the PMF model and one-way ANOVA were used to identify the potential sources and discuss the factors affecting the enrichment of heavy metals. The results showed that the mean contents of the surface soils were 1.190 (Cd), 139.4 (Cr), 96.74 (Cu), 0.081 (Hg), 56.97 (Ni), 46.66 (Pb) and 130.1 (Zn) mg/kg. All heavy metals exceeded the background values of the A layer soil in Yunnan Province. The Igeo showed that Cd was the most hazardous element in the study area, followed by Cu, Cr, As, Ni and Pb. The RI showed that low ecological risks, moderate ecological risks, considerable ecological risks and strong ecological risks accounted for 3.81%, 55.27%, 37.74% and 3.18%, respectively, of the total samples, and Cd was the main dominant element. The HI values of the As element in children were greater than 1, indicating a non-carcinogenic risk, and other elements' risks were acceptable. The CR values of Cr and Ni were higher than their limits (1 × 10−4), and both had carcinogenic risks in children and adults, as did As in children. According to the PMF model, four heavy metals sources were identified: geological sources (32%), sources from mining activities (19.38%), atmospheric deposition sources (17.57%) and agricultural sources (31.05%). Thereinto, As and Pb were mainly derived from agricultural sources, Cd and Cr were mainly associated with geological sources, Cu was largely from mining activity sources, Hg was mainly from atmospheric deposition sources and Ni and Zn were mainly from geological sources, mining activities and agricultural activities. The parent material has a significant influence on the enrichment of heavy metals in the soil, and the heavy metals are significantly enriched in the carbonate parent material and quaternary parent material. Topography also plays a role in heavy metal accumulation; Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn gradually decreased with the increase in altitude, and As and Pb increased with the increase in altitude. Mn-oxide played a crucial part in the enrichment of Cu and Zn, while SOC, K2O and pH had little influence on the accumulation of heavy metals.
