Abstract:Child stunting (chronic undernutrition) is a major public health concern in low- and middle-income countries. In Rwanda, an estimated 33% of children are affected. This study investigated the household living conditions and the impact of gender-related decision-making on child stunting. The findings contribute to ongoing discussion on this critical public health issue. In December 2021, a population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Rwanda’s Northern Province; 601 women with children aged 1–36 months were included. Stunting was assessed using low height-for-age criteria. The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) was used to determine household socioeconomic status. Researcher-designed questionnaires evaluated gender-related factors such as social support and household decision-making. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified risk factor patterns. Six hundred and one children were included in the study; 27.1% ( n = 163) were diagnosed as stunted; there was a higher prevalence of stunting in boys (60.1%) than girls (39.9%; p<0.001). The MPI was 0.265 with no significant difference between households with stunted children (MPI, 0.263; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.216–0.310) and non-stunted children (MPI, 0.265; 95% CI, 0.237–0.293). Most households reported a lack of adequate housing (78.9%), electricity (63.0%), good water sources (58.7%), and proper toilets (57.1%). Male-headed households dominated (92% vs. 8.0%; p = 0.018), and women often shared decision-making with their partners. However, 26.4% of women reported forced sexual intercourse within marriage (Odds Ratio [OR] 1.81; 95% CI, 1.15–2.85). Lack of support during illness ([OR], 1.93; 95% CI, 1.13–3.28) and absence of personal guidance (OR, 2.44; 95% CI, 1.41–4.26) were significantly associated with child stunting. Poverty contributes to child stunting in the Northern Province of Rwanda. Limited social support and women’s lack of decision-making power in the household increase stunting rates. Interventions should empower women and address the broader social and economic context to promote both women’s and children’s health.

Abstract:Objective: Stunted children have an increased risk of diminished cognitive development, diabetes, degenerative and CVD later in life. Numerous modifiable factors decrease the risk of stunting in children. This study aimed to assess the role of the individual, household and social factors on stunting in Zimbabwean children. Design: A 1:2 unmatched case-control study. Setting: This study was conducted in two predominantly rural provinces (one with the highest national prevalence of stunting and one with the lowest prevalence) in Zimbabwe. Participants: Data were obtained from the caregivers of 150 children aged between 6 and 59 months with stunting and from the caregivers of 300 children without stunting. Results: Multiple (39) correlates of stunting were identified. Child's age, birth length, birth weight, and weight-for-age outcome (child-related factors), caregiver's age, maternal HIV status, occupation, and education (parental factors), breast-feeding status, number of meals, and dietary quality (dietary factors), child's appetite, diarrhoeal and worm infection (childhood illnesses), income status, access to safe water, access to a toilet, health clubs and maternal support in infant feeding (household, socio-cultural factors) were all found to be significant predictors of childhood stunting. Conclusion: Nearly all aspects under review from the individual-, household- to social-level factors were significantly associated with childhood stunting. These findings add to the growing body of evidence supporting the WHO stunting framework and strengthen the need to focus interventions on a multi-sectoral approach to effectively address stunting in high prevalence countries.
Factors associated with under-five mortality in Rwanda: An analysis of the Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey 2020

Abstract:Despite global and Rwandan progress in reducing under-five mortality, the risk of children dying before their fifth birthday persists, necessitating intensified research on determinants. Thus, this study analyzed the birth history data to shed light on the underlying causes of under-five mortality in Rwanda. The study is a secondary analysis of data sourced from the 2020 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS) cross-sectional design. Using SPSS, the data was cleaned, recoded, and weighted, with descriptive and inferential statistics applied. The dependent variable was the child's living status, while independent variables included socio-demographic, media exposure status of mothers, child, and environmental factors. A total of 10267 under-five children of all interviewed mothers were included in the final analysis, of which 12.3% (1260) died. Maternal age (25-34 years: AOR = 1.514, 95% CI = 1.130-2.029, p = 0.005; 45+: AOR = 13.226, 95% CI = 9.253-18.905, p<0.001), occupational status (agricultural workers and other services), and three or more births within five years (AOR = 1.895, 95% CI = 1.433-2.508, p<0.001) significantly increase the risk of under-five mortality. Conversely, maternal education (primary: AOR = 0.821, p = 0.023; secondary: AOR = 0.533, p<0.001; higher: AOR = 0.365, p = 0.010) and higher wealth indexes (middle: AOR = 0.743, p = 0.001; rich: AOR = 0.612, p<0.001), as well as current breastfeeding (AOR = 0.524, 95% CI = 0.455-0.603, p-value <0.001), are associated with lower under-five mortality. Child sex significantly impacts under-five mortality (AOR = 0.873, 95% CI = 0.770-0.991, p = 0.035), favoring females over males. Conversely, multiple birth type children face higher under-five mortality (AOR = 3.541, 95% CI = 2.727-4.599, p<0.001) compared to singletons. Children in the northern (AOR = 1.478, 95% CI = 1.086-2.011, p = 0.013) and eastern (AOR = 1.470, 95% CI = 1.097-1.971, p = 0.010) regions are more susceptible to mortality compared to those in the central (Kigali) region. Additionally, under-five mortality is higher when using water from tanks and other sources (AOR = 2.240, 95% CI = 1.471-3.411, p<0.001) than piped water. This study identifies crucial factors linked to under-five mortality, underscoring the importance of prioritizing them in interventions to enhance Rwandan under-five survival rates.
Prevalence of stunting and associated factors among under-five children in sub-Saharan Africa: Multilevel ordinal logistic regression analysis modeling

Abstract:Introduction: Stunting is still a major public health problem all over the world, it affecting more than one-third of under-five children in the world that leads to growth retardation, life-threatening complication and accelerate mortality and morbidity. The evidence is scarce on prevalence and associated factors of stunting among under-five children in Sub-Saharan Africa for incorporated intervention. Therefore this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and determinants of stunting among under-five children in Sub-Saharan Africa using recent demographic and health surveys of each country. Methods: This study was based on the most recent Demographic and Health Survey data of 36 sub-Saharan African countries. A total of 203,852(weighted sample) under-five children were included in the analysis. The multi-level ordinal logistic regression was fitted to identify determinants of stunting. Parallel line (proportional odds) assumption was cheeked by Brant test and it is satisfied (p-value = 0.68) which is greater than 0.05. Due to the nested nature of the dataset deviance was used model comparison rather than AIC and BIC. Finally the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% CI was reported identify statistical significant determinants of stunting among under-five children. Results: In this study, the prevalence of stunting among under-five children in Sub-Saharan Africa 34.04% (95% CI: 33.83%, 34.24%) with a large difference between specific countries which ranges from 16.14% in Gabon to 56.17% in Burundi. In the multi-level ordinal logistic regression good maternal education, born from mothers aged above 35 years, high household wealth status, small family size, being female child, being female household head, having media exposure and having consecutive ANC visit were significantly associated with lower odds of stunting. Whereas, living from rural residence, being 24-59 month children age, single or divorced marital status, higher birth order and having diarrhea in the last two weeks were significantly associated with higher odds of stunting. Conclusion: Stunting among under-five children is still public health problem in Sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore designing interventions to address diarrhea and other infectious disease, improving the literacy level of the area and increase the economic level of the family to reduce the prevalence of stunting in the study area.

Abstract:Importance: Identifying modifiable risk factors associated with childhood stunting in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is imperative for the development of evidence-based interventions and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Objective: To evaluate key modifiable risk factors associated with childhood stunting in SSA. Design, setting, and participants: This cross-sectional study examined the most recent (2014-2021) Demographic and Health Surveys data for children younger than 5 years from 25 SSA countries. Exposures: Modifiable risk factors included history of diarrhea within 2 weeks, consumption of dairy products, maternal body mass index, maternal educational level, antenatal care visits, place of birth, wealth index, type of toilet, and type of cooking fuel. Main outcomes and measures: Stunting and severe stunting, measured using the height-for-age z score, were the main outcomes. Children who scored below -2.0 SDs or -3.0 SDs were classified as having stunted or severely stunted growth, respectively. Relative risks and 95% CIs were computed using generalized linear latent and mixed models and log-binomial link functions. Population-attributable fractions (PAFs) were calculated using adjusted relative risks and prevalence estimates for key modifiable risk factors. Results: This study included 145 900 children from 25 SSA countries. The mean (SD) age of the children was 29.4 (17.3) months, and 50.6% were male. The highest PAFs of severe childhood stunting were observed for mothers lacking a formal education (PAF, 21.9%; 95% CI, 19.0%-24.8%), children lacking consumption of dairy products (PAF, 20.8%; 95% CI, 16.8%-24.9%), unclean cooking fuel (PAF, 9.5%; 95% CI, 2.6%-16.3%), home birth (PAF, 8.3%; 95% CI, 6.3%-10.0%), and low-income household (PAF, 5.8%; 95% CI, 3.4%-8.0%). These 5 modifiable risk factors were associated with 51.6% (95% CI, 40.5%-60.9%) of the severe childhood stunting in SSA. Conclusions and relevance: This cross-sectional study identified 5 modifiable risk factors that were associated with 51.6% of severe childhood stunting in SSA. These factors should be a priority for policy makers when considering future child health interventions to address chronic malnutrition in SSA.

Abstract:Background Epidemiological and nutritional modifications are causing an increase in stunting in many low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMIC), which will eventually result in juvenile diseases and mortality. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the influential factors contributing to stunting among under‐five children in Cambodia. Methods A secondary dataset consisting of 3268 under‐five children was extracted from the latest Cambodian Demographic and Health Survey (CDHS)‐2021/2022 dataset. The Chi‐square test and Boruta algorithm were used for covariate selection, and logistic regression approaches were used to determine the influence of demographic, socioeconomic and other factors on the presence of stunting. Results Findings revealed that about 21% of under‐five children were stunted, and the prevalence of stunting was higher in rural areas than in urban areas. The prevalence of child stunting was lower in families with highly educated parents. A child whose father had a secondary education had 0.71 times lower (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.520–0.969) chance of stunting than a child whose father had no education. Findings revealed that Ratnak Kiri, Mondul Kiri, Stung Treng, Pursat and Kampot had a greater prevalence of stunting than other places, ranging from 27.11% to 35.70%, whereas Banteay Meanchey, Phnom Penh and Kandal had the lowest rates, ranging from 12.80% to 16.00%. Results of the Boruta algorithm and logistic regression suggested that under‐five stunting is significantly influenced by factors such as the child's age, size at birth, mother's age at first birth, mother's body mass index (BMI), father's educational status, cooking fuel, and wealth index. Conclusions It is necessary to take initiatives for reducing the prevalence of stunted children prioritising the identified factors that ultimately help to reduce the burden of child health. The authors believed that the findings of this study will be helpful for policymakers in designing the appropriate policies and actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by reducing stunting among under‐five children in Cambodia.

Abstract:Many children in low‐ and middle‐income countries are not attaining their developmental potential. Stunting is associated with poor child development, but it is not known which correlates of stunting are impairing child development. We explored potential socioeconomic, nutritional, clinical, and household correlates of early child development among 12–59‐month‐old children with stunting in a cross‐sectional study in Uganda. Development was assessed using the Malawi Development Assessment Tool (MDAT) across four domains of gross and fine motor, language, and social skills. Linear regression analysis was used to assess correlates of development in the four domains and total MDAT score. Of 750 children included, the median [interquartile range] age was 30 [23−41] months, 55% of the children resided in rural settings with 21% from female‐headed households and 47% of mothers had no schooling. Maternal factors promoting normal linear growth of children from impoverished Rwandan households: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Linear growth faltering remains a pervasive public health concern that affects many children worldwide. This study aimed to investigate possible maternal factors promoting normal linear growth among children aged 6-23 months of age from impoverished Rwandan households. Methods: We used a three-stage cluster sampling procedure. The study population consisted of children aged six to 23 months and their mothers who lived in the study districts. A structured questionnaire helped to collect data from 807 selected mother-child dyads. The primary outcome variable was height-for-age Z scores. The main predictors were maternal income-generating activity, maternal education, maternal depression, household decision making, number of ANC visits, use of family planning method, types of family planning, and mode of delivery. We used univariate analysis to establish median, frequencies, and percentages. Furthermore, we used the Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and Spearman rank correlation tests for bivariate analysis. We included in the final model of robust linear regression for multivariate analysis the potential confounding variables identified as significantly associated with the outcome (child age, participation in works for both parents, good handwashing practice, owning a vegetable garden, and the total number of livestock) along with maternal factors. Results: Maternal factors that promoted normal linear growth of children were the presence of maternal income generation activity (β= 0.640 [0.0269 1.253], p value = 0.041), the participation of the mother in the decision-making process of the household (β=0.147 [0.080 0.214], p-value < 0.001), and the higher frequency of consultations with ANC (β=0.189 [0.025 0.354], p-value = 0.024). Additionally, a combination of household decision-making with the number of ANC visits predicted an increase in the linear growth of the child (β=0.032 [0.019 0.045], p-value < 0.001). Conclusion: Maternal factors such as maternal income-generating activity, maternal participation in household decision making, and increased number of ANC visits were found to promote normal child linear growth. These results contribute valuable information to the formulation of interventions and policies to improve child nutrition and growth in the community studied.
High Burden of Undernutrition among At-Risk Children in Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic in Rwanda

Abstract:Background: Sufficient knowledge of the disproportionate burden of undernutrition among vulnerable children is required for accelerating undernutrition reduction in low-income countries. Objectives: We aimed to assess the prevalence of stunting, underweight and wasting and associated factors among high-risk children born preterm, with low birth weight or other birth and neurodevelopmental injuries, who received nutritional support and clinical care follow-up in a Pediatric Development Clinic (PDC) in rural Rwanda. Methods: This cross-sectional study included all children from rural areas enrolled in PDC between April 2014-September 2017 aged 6-59 months at their last visit during this period. Anthropometric measurements, socioeconomic and clinical characteristics were extracted from an electronic medical records system. We used the World Health Organization child growth standards to classify stunting, underweight and wasting. Factors associated with undernutrition were identified using logistic regression analysis. Results: Of 641 children, 58.8% were stunted, 47.5% were underweight and 25.8% were wasted. Small for gestational age was associated with increased odds of stunting [OR 2.63; 95% CI 1.58-4.36] and underweight (OR 2.33; 95% CI 1.46-3.71), while history of feeding difficulties was significantly associated with wasting (OR: 3.36; 95% CI: 2.20-5.13) and underweight (OR: 2.68; 95% CI: 1.78-4.04). Later age at PDC enrollment was associated with increased odds of stunting (OR: 1.06; 95% CI: 1.01-1.11), underweight (OR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.05-1.14) and wasting (OR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.04-1.10). Conclusions: The prevalence of stunting, underweight and wasting are high in this at-risk population, highlighting the need for specific interventions to address undernutrition among children with similar characteristics. Early PDC enrollment of high-risk infants may reduce undernutrition risk.
A User-Perceived Freshness Clustering Method to Identify Three Subgroups in Mobile Internet Users

Abstract:The user behavior analysis of the mobile Internet is still to be explored. This increases importance in research and business as the mobile Internet penetration becomes visible. The author performs a preparatory survey to identify the user behavior scenarios during a day. It indicates that there are three distinguished mobile Internet behavior patterns: (a) always active, (b) irregular, (c) prime time use. This gives a novel perspective to understand user interactions in the mobile Internet. Intelligent mobile services require addressing these differences in order to improve user experience. The author proposes a user-perceived freshness method to cluster users with the content access logs in order to utilize this three-subgroup-based view. The revisit ratio in the following month is used to characterize the user clusters and the middle users show a high revisit ratio. The author discusses the characteristics of this middle user segment.
[Side effects of meglumine antimoniate in cutaneous leishmaniasis: 15 cases].

Abstract:BACKGROUND Leishmaniasis is wide spread parasitic disease considered to be endemic in 88 countries in both old and new world. The standard treatment remains Meglumine antimoniate. AIM We study the side effects of systemic meglumine antimoniate in cutaneous leishmaniasis. METHODS We conduct a retrospective study covering 3-year period (2002- 2005). All medical reports of cutaneous leishmaniasis treated by systemic Meglumine antimoniate are reviewed. RESULTS The study comprise 63 patients all treated by systemic meglumine antimoniate at the dose of 60 mg/kg/day for 10-15 days. Side effects were noted in 15 cases (12 females and 3 males). The subject's age range from 11 to 78 years. Stibio-intolerance (fever, rash, arthralgia, abdominal pain) was observed in 12 cases and stibiotoxicity in 3 cases: precordialgies 1 case, hyperamylasemia and increase liver enzyme: 1 case, pancytopenia, renal and hepatic failure leading to death: 1 case, skin eruption: 7 cases, pruritus and erythema in the site of injection: 5 cases, urticaria: 1 case. Meglumine antimoniate was stopped in 13 cases. CONCLUSION Meglumine antimoniate is the generally recommended treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis. In spite of the rarity of Glucantime's side effects, we recommend a careful survey especially in older patients.
Determinants of coexistence of undernutrition and anemia among under-five children in Rwanda; evidence from 2019/20 demographic health survey: Application of bivariate binary logistic regression model

Abstract:Background Undernutrition and anemia are significant public health issues among under-5 children, with potential long-term consequences for growth, development, and overall health. Thus, this study aims to conduct a bivariate binary logistic regression model by accounting for the possible dependency of childhood undernutrition and anemia. Methods The data came from the DHS program’s measurement. A total of 3,206 under-five children were involved in this study. A single composite index measure was calculated for stunting, wasting, and underweight using principal component analysis. A bivariate binary logistic regression model is used to assess the association between undernutrition and anemia given the effect of other predictors. Results Among 3,206 under-five children considered in this study, 1482 (46.2%) and 658 (20.5%) children were agonized by anemia and undernutrition, respectively. In bivariate binary logistic regression model; Urban children [AOR = 0.751, 96% CI: 0.573–0.984; AOR = 0.663, 95% CI: 0.456–0.995] and anemic mothers [AOR = 1.160, 95% CI: 1.104–1.218; AOR = 1.663, 95% CI: 1.242–2.225] were significantly associated with both childhood anemia and undernutrition, respectively. Improved water sources [AOR = 0.681, 95% CI: 0.446–0.996], average-sized children [AOR = 0.567, 95% CI: 0.462–0.696], and diarrhea [AOR = 1.134, 95% CI: 1.120–2.792] were significantly associated with childhood anemia. Large-sized children [AOR = 0.882, 95% CI: 0.791–0.853] and those with fever [AOR = 1.152, 95% CI: 1.312–2.981] were significantly associated with under-five children’s undernutrition. Conclusion The prevalence of both undernutrition and anemia among under-five-year-old children was high in Rwanda. The following determinants are statistically associated with both childhood undernutrition and anemia: place of residence; source of drinking water; maternal anemia; being a twin; birth size of children; diarrhea; fever; and child age. Anemia and nutritional deficiencies must be treated concurrently under one program, with evidence-based policies aimed at vulnerable populations.

Abstract:Abstract Background Tanzania has made a significant improvement in wasting and underweight indicators. However, stunting has remained persistently higher and varying between regions. We analyzed Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS) datasets to examine (i) the trend of stunting over the period of 25 years in Tanzania and (ii) the remaining challenges and factors associated with stunting in the country. Methods This secondary data analysis included six TDHS datasets with data of 37,409 under-five children spreading in 1991–1992(n = 6587), 1996(n = 5437), 1999(n = 2556), 2004–05(n = 7231), 2009–10(n = 6597), and 2015–16(n = 9001) conducted in all regions of Tanzania. Variables specific to children and their caregivers were analyzed using SPSS version 22. The variables considered include child anthropometric variables, caregiver’s demographic characteristics and household’s socio-economic factors. We used frequencies and percentages to compare stunting prevalence across the six surveys and chi-square test and three-level hierarchical logistic regression to examine the factors associated with stunting also applying sample weighting as advised by TDHS. Results The prevalence of stunting has declined by 30% over the period of 25 years in Tanzania. However, one in three children aged below five years remains stunted with overweight and obesity more than doubled (from 11 to 25%) in the same period among women of reproductive age. The factors associated with stunting included children living in female-headed households (AOR = 1.16, P = 0.014), aged 24–35 months (AOR = 1.75, P = 0.019), born with low birth weight (AOR = 2.14, P < 0.001) and with inconsistent or without breastfeeding (AOR = 3.46, P < 0.001 and AOR = 4.29, P = 0.001) respectively. The risk of stunting among children living in urban area (AOR = 0.56, P < 0.001), with higher caregiver’s education (AOR = 0.56, P = 0.018), obese mother (AOR = 0.63, P < 0.001), households with highest wealth index (AOR = 0.42, P < 0.001), and among girls (AOR = 0.77, P < 0.001). Conclusions The burden of stunting in Tanzania has declined by 30% in the past 25 years, but still affecting one in every three children. Efforts are needed to increase the pace of stunting decline especially among boys, children in rural areas, from poor, uneducated, and female-headed households, and through improving infant and young feeding practices. Effective and tailored nutrition-sensitive and specific interventions using multisectoral approaches should be considered to address these important determinants.

Abstract:Undernutrition poses a significant global public health challenge, adversely affecting childhood cognitive and physical development while increasing the risk of disease and mortality. Stunting, characterized by impaired growth and development in children due to insufficient psychological stimulation, frequent infections, and inadequate nutrition, remains a critical issue. Although economic growth alone cannot fully address the prevalence of stunting, there exists a robust correlation between a country's income level and childhood stunting rates. Countries with higher incomes tend to have lower rates of childhood stunting. Notably, while childhood stunting is declining worldwide, it remains persistent in Africa. Consequently, this study aims to assess the prevalence of childhood stunting and its determinants in low- and lower-middle-income African countries This study conducted a secondary analysis of standard demographic and health surveys in low- and lower-middle-income African countries spanning the period from 2010 to 2022. The analysis included a total sample of 204,214 weighted children under the age of five years. To identify the determinants of stunting, we employed a multilevel mixed-effect model, considering the three levels of variables. The measures of association (fixed effect) were determined using the adjusted odds ratio at a 95% confidence interval. Significance was declared when the association between the outcome variable and the explanatory variable had a p-value less than 0.05. In low and lower-middle-income African countries, 31.28% of children under five years old experience stunting, with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 31.08% to 31.48%. The results from a multilevel mixed-effect analysis revealed that 24 months or more of age of child, male gender, low and high birth weight, low and high maternal BMI, no and low maternal education, low household wealth index, multiple (twin or triplet) births, rural residence, and low income of countries were significantly associated with childhood stunting. Stunting among children under five years of age in low- and lower-middle-income African countries was relatively high. Individual, community, and country-level factors were statistically associated with childhood stunting. Equally importantly, with child, maternal, and community factors of stunting, the income of countries needs to be considered in providing nutritional interventions to mitigate childhood stunting in Africa.

Abstract:India is a country where approximately one-third of children still suffer from stunting phenomena. Stunting among the children is an anomaly of impairment of growth and development of children. It is a significant deterrent in achieving the welfare of the children. The aims of this study is to explore the role of maternal, household and individual level risk factors nested within each other and its association with stunting phenomena among children under -five years of age. For conducting this study data have been extracted from the fourth series of the National Family Health Survey 2015-16. A total of 225,002 children of under-five age groups were included in this study. Apart from the summary statistics and Pearson’s chi-square test to understand the role of predictors and its association in between stunting outcome and independent variables binary logistic multivariate regression model was used. The study revealed that underweight women (AOR: 1.25; P < 0.01; 95% CI: 1.22 – 1.28), women with no education (AOR: 1.68; P < 0.01; 95% CI: 1.61 – 1.76), women’s of younger age and women’s who never received antenatal care visits (AOR: 1.12; P < 0.01; 95% CI: 1.09 – 1.16) were more likely to have stunted children. Households with the poorest wealth index were more likelihood of having stunted children. Apart from these above risk factors sex of the child, birth order of the child, stool disposal, and diarrheal status of the child were significantly associated with stunting. In this study, it was found that maternal, household and individual level risk factors were the potent determinants of stunting phenomena among the children of under five years age. Early Interventions programs are very much needed to obviate stunting emphasising on male children, a child with higher birth order and children belonging to the poorest socio-economic status.

Abstract:Abstract Background Undernutrition is one of the major public health problems affecting children in developing settings. Despite impressive interventions like productive safety net program (PSNP), there is limited information on the association between stunting and PSNP implementation in Ethiopia. Methods Community-based comparative cross-sectional study design was used among systematically selected 1555 children and their mothers/caregivers from households enrolled in PSNP and not, respectively, in Meta District east Ethiopia from 5th–20th of March 2017. Data were collected using pretested structured questionnaire. Measuring board was used to measure length/height of children. Length/height for age Z -score was generated using World Health Organization (WHO) Anthro version 3.2.2. Descriptive statistics was used to describe all relevant variables. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify predictors of stunting. Odds ratio along with 95% confidence intervals were estimated to measure the strength of association. The statistical significance was declared at p value less than 0.05. Results The prevalence of stunting was 47.7%, 95% CI (44.1%, 51.5%) and 33.5%, 95% CI (29.9%, 36.9%) among children from households enrolled in PSNP and non-PSNP ones, respectively. Lack of maternal education [AOR = 3.39; 95% CI (1.12, 5.11)], women’s empowerment [AOR = 3.48; 95% CI (2.36, 5.12)] and fourth antenatal care visit [AOR = 4.2, 95% CI (2.5, 6.8)], practicing hand washing [AOR = 0.46; 95% CI (0.28, 0.76)], living in mid-land [AOR = 1.94, 95% CI (1.12, 3.35)] and low-land[AOR = 0.27: 95% CI (0.16, 0.45)] agro-ecological zones, PSNP membership [AOR = 1.82, 95% CI (1.14, 2.89)], childhood illness [AOR = 8.41; 95% CI (4.58, 12.76)], non-exclusive breastfeeding [AOR = 3.6; 95% CI (2.30, 4.80)], inadequate minimum dietary diversity [AOR = 4.7; 95% CI (3.0, 7.40)], child’s sex [AOR = 1.73, 95% CI (1.18, 2.53)] and age (24–59 months) [AOR = 3.2; 95% CI (1.6, 6.3)] were independent predictors of stunting. Conclusions The prevalence of stunting was high among children from households enrolled in PSNP. Stunting was significantly associated with maternal- and child-related factors. Therefore, women empowerment on household’s issues and improving infant and young child feeding practices could reduce the prevalence of stunting and its adverse consequences.
[Prevalence and factors associated with stunting among schoolchildren in Dori in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso]

Abstract:Objectives: To study the factors associated with stunted physical growth in primary school children and adolescents in the Burkina Faso Sahel. Materials and methods: This was a secondary analysis of the data from the survey conducted by the Directorate of Nutrition in June 2016 in 13 primary schools. The baseline study was conducted from May 15 to 24, 2016. This secondary analysis of the database took place from March to August 2017. The study participants were made up of male and female students from public primary schools and who were beneficiaries of the school canteens of the Dori municipality at the time of the survey. Logistic regression was used to identify the factors associated with a 5% significance level. Results: The analysis involved a sample of 568 students aged 5 to 15 years. Girls accounted for 52% of students. The prevalence of stunting was 32.92% (95% CI [29-36%]), it was 28.93% (95 % CI [23.84-34.62%]) among boys and 36.61 % (95% CI [31.28-42.28%]) in girls. Among primary students, age (ORa = 4.38, P = 0.00), anemia (ORa = 0.24, P = 0.01) and latrine use (ORa = 0.58 with P = 0.02) were the factors statistically associated with stunting (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The prevalence of stunting among primary school students in the commune of Dori remains high. Associated factors were age, anemia and latrine use. Promotion of latrine use in households and prevention of anemia in children under 5 years of age would be necessary for the reduction of stunting among adolescents.

Abstract:A catheter set originally designed as a system for placement of large thoracostomy tubes with the Seldinger technique and sequential coaxial dilations was used to place 31 catheters in 28 patients. Either computed tomographic (CT) (n = 25) or fluoroscopic (n = 3) guidance was used. The tubes were 28 F (n = 13) and 24 F (n = 18). The tubes were successfully placed in 27 of 28 patients (96%), with the infection processes completely resolved in 22 of 25 patients (88%). Use of the system is simple and safe. These large catheters may be useful for cure of processes that do not respond to drainage with smaller tubes.
