Abstract:The increasing worldwide demand for concrete, fueled by rising urbanization and infrastructural expansion due to exponential population growth, has raised concerns over the depletion of natural resources, as global natural aggregate (NA) demand is estimated to surpass 50 billion tons by 2025. Concurrently, more than 3.57 billion tons of construction and demolition (C&D) waste are produced annually worldwide. Recycling of C&D waste plays a major role in addressing environmental concerns, promoting sustainable construction practices, and circular economy. Ineffective handling of C&D waste has led to environmental consequences, such as increased landfilling and leaching of harmful substances into soil and water systems. This article presents a comprehensive review of the use of C&D in construction with an emphasis on structural applications and the identification of challenges and opportunities for recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). This study examined the physical and mechanical performance of RCA, focusing on its compressive strength, durability, and potential applications in structural engineering and its treatment methods. In addition, it sheds light on key management areas for improvement, such as waste reduction strategies and recycling efficiency, while exploring the environmental benefits of incorporating C&D waste materials in construction projects.

Abstract:Rapid population expansion has caused an abrupt rise in the amount of solid waste products produced globally. Therefore, there is a pressing demand for strategies for recycling the waste material. There are many different waste categorization principles, including classification based on source, state, or type. This review examines four waste categories using the source of the waste as an indication for classification: agricultural waste, industrial waste, sea material waste, and sludge, all of which constitute solid waste. This review discusses the efficacy of newly developed adsorbents as well as the recovery, regeneration, and subsequent control of used adsorbents through safe reuse. The main objective of this review article is to emphasize the importance and accessibility of inexpensive alternative adsorbents in many applications. It also focuses on energy applications, including fuel cells, supercapacitors, and batteries developed from inexpensive alternative adsorbent-based materials like silica, activated carbon, and ammonia, because these components are crucial for energy use. We provide a of the techniques for determining the economicsustainability of solid waste. This review discusses the potential addition of waste materials as cementitious materials in concrete production. It seeks to demonstrate the concept of employing these wastes by describing their engineering, physical, and chemical features. As well as mineral fertilizers, products made from agricultural waste can also be added to the soil to increase its production. These features of waste aid in the remediation of soils.

Abstract:(1) Background: Globally, numerous development projects are being undertaken to expand and improve urban infrastructure facilities, which result in around 30% to 40% of construction and demolition (C&D) waste in the total waste generation. Due to its detrimental impacts on the environment and human health, several researchers have been striving to find effective methods to manage these large amounts of C&D wastes to minimise environmental impacts and maximise the economic and social benefits. Despite these efforts, limited studies have focused on comprehensively reviewing the integrated sustainable management of C&D waste. Thus, this study aims to conduct a comprehensive review of the published literature to identify barriers that hinder sustainable C&D waste management practices and map future research areas for effective C&D waste management. (2) Methods: A two-step systematic approach was adopted where the first step involved a bibliometric assessment of the published literature from 2002 to 2022, and then the most significant publications were reviewed from the bibliometric findings to achieve this study aim. (3) Results: The review findings identifies several research gaps which were categorised according to seven themes, including limitations in operational aspects, the lack of monitoring of legislation and regulations, an inadequate market for recycled products, inefficient stakeholder engagement and management, limitations of effective framework/models for sustainable C&D waste management, limited research on social performance, and inadequate integration of information technology in C&D waste management. This study's findings are invaluable for researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers for in-depth understanding of the boundaries and potential future research areas to enhance sustainable C&D waste management practices.

Abstract:The acceleration of urbanization and industrialization has accelerated the speed of building renewal, followed by explosive growth in the quantity of construction and demolition waste (CDW). High-value reuse technology scheme for all components, including classification and deep processing, is a sustainable development direction of great significance to achieve maximum utilization of CDW. Recent advances in green and ecological regeneration approaches for CDW are systematically elaborated in this review, including reinforcement approaches for recycled aggregates and alkali activated technology for recycled powders. Firstly, the main components of CDW and their characteristics are summarized, and the environmental hazards of CDW are expounded. The resource utilization of CDW is indispensable from the perspective of environmental protection and low-carbon development. Furthermore, the CDW treatment process and regeneration approach are analyzed in detail. The application of CDW in recycled coarse aggregates, fine aggregates, and cementitious materials is sufficiently illustrated in this study. Representative mature and sustainable approaches are evaluated to explore the development prospects of the CDW treatment process in terms of economic feasibility, ecological protection, and technological reform. Finally, based on the comprehensive analysis of the technical advantages of CDW resource utilization, a sustainable, low-carbon, and full-component resource regeneration CDW recycling strategy containing pretreatment, deep treatment, and fine processing is proposed. The multi-process collaboration makes the resource utilization for CDW more systematic and sustainable. The process proposed in this study can provide valuable insights for future zero-waste utilization of CDW.

Abstract:Due to constant growth of waste production, recent strategies in waste management such as circular economy promote the maximum life cycle use of materials. In construction industry where structures tend to last for decades, the use of such recycled materials can have numerous benefits including overall reduction in cost, in use of virgin materials, and in CO2 production as well as providing an opportunity for a tailored concrete with specific properties. Yet, because of the stereotypical and negative image of mechanical properties reduction, as a result of using waste materials, often their vast contribution in sustainability and durability properties are not taken into consideration. In this regard, we propose viewing waste materials as secondary raw materials that in certain regards, can provide a favorably tailored property. In this regard, the following review article first provides a short description of the most commonly used waste materials such as supplementary cementitious materials (fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, silica fume, metakaolin, rice husk ash, municipal solid waste ash, steel slag, copper slag), ceramics from construction and demolition (glass powder, brick and tile ceramic and porcelain), and the vastly available plastic materials (polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, and rubber). Then, by reviewing a selected environmental impact (life cycle assessment), physicochemical, durability, and finally mechanical properties discuss the limitations, future projections of newer waste materials (e.g., agricultural waste) to be used and suggest potential future study in this area.

Abstract:There have been efforts to use building demolition waste as an alternative aggregate in concrete to decrease the use of natural resources for construction. The World Green Building Council estimates that the construction industry is responsible for more than 50% of all material extracted globally and that construction and demolition waste makes up 35% of global landfills. As a result, incorporating recycled aggregate (RA) in concrete production is a prudent course of action to reduce the environmental impact. This study reviews prior research on using recycled aggregate instead of conventional ingredients in concrete. The composition and morphology of different types of RA, the behavior of RA in fresh and hardened states, keyword co-occurrence and evolution analysis, and the various additives used to enhance the inferior properties of RA are discussed. The RA showed different physical properties when compared with natural aggregate. However, the addition of pozzolanic materials and various pretreatment techniques is desirable for improving the inferior properties of RA. While building waste has been utilized as a substitute for fine and coarse aggregate, prior research has demonstrated that a modified mixing approach, an adequate mixing proportion, and the optimum replacement of cementitious materials are necessary. Based on the review, the recommendation is to use RA at a replacement level of up to 30% and the addition of precoated and pozzolanic materials as a treatment to provide concrete with adequate workability, strength, and durability for structural applications.

Abstract:Adsorbent materials have long been used for remediating environmental contaminants. There is an increasing focus on developing sustainable adsorbent materials for long-term use in environmentally friendly and cost-effective remediation. "Green" or "eco-friendly" sorbent materials are generally prepared from renewable or recycled resources, have minimal toxic effects, involve synthesis processes with minor chemical or energy footprints, have high reusability, and do not contribute to additional waste or contamination. Thus, it is essential for materials to have high sorption capacity, high stability, and reusability. The literature focuses on using low-cost or waste materials to produce sorbent materials for the immobilization of contaminants from soil and water systems. The regeneration possibilities of adsorbents are used to evaluate their cost effectiveness and long-term environmental impact once they are applied at field-scale. This review evaluates sustainable sorbent materials, highlighting their green and eco-friendly qualities for a circular economy, and their contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). The synthesis techniques, ecotoxicity, and prospect of reusing adsorbents are highlighted. Further, the review provides insights for researchers and practitioners interested in developing and applying green adsorbents, including bio-based carbon, char, and fibrous materials for soil and water remediation.

Abstract:Large amounts of construction and demolition (C&D) waste have been generated due to the rapid urbanization process in China over recent decades. Hence, effective strategies for C&D waste reuse and recycling are urgently needed to reduce the impact of the generation of C&D waste. This work assessed the pollution control efficiency of recycled aggregates from C&D waste as substrates in vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) and the regeneration capability of these substrates. Six artificial experimental columns loaded with three recycled aggregates, namely, brick (RBA), concrete (RCA), and concrete-brick mixtures (C&B), and three natural aggregates, namely, limestone (LIM), lava rock (LAV), and zeolite (ZEO), were separately used. The results showed that recycled aggregates performed more effectively in terms of TP and COD removal than did natural aggregates, with the highest removal efficiency of 87.1% towards TP achieved by RCA and 74.9% towards COD achieved by C&B. Nemerow pollution index calculation demonstrated that the effluent water quality followed the order of RCA > C&B > RBA > LIM > ZEO > LAV. NH3–N, TP and COD removal efficiencies of 51.3%, 51.0% and 58.9%, respectively, were observed for RCA after in situ regeneration. The highest NH3–N and TP removal efficiencies were 54.7% and 84.8%, respectively, for RCA by aeration and NaOH washing, respectively, after four adsorption-desorption runs of ectopic regeneration. However, chemical regeneration of RCA and LIM severely destroyed the substrate structure over physical regeneration. Unfortunately, a low temperature led to a poor removal of TN in all systems, and the recycled aggregates from C&D waste were less resistant to impact than were the natural aggregates. Life cycle cost analysis showed that RCA as a substrate reduces the cost of wetland construction. This work provides a systematic comparison of recycled aggregates and natural aggregates as substrates in VFCWs in regard to their purification ability, regeneration methods and economic cost.

Abstract:This review looks over the current construction and demolition waste management (C&DWM) situations by scrutinizing the definition, classification, components, compositions, generated sources and causes, impacts of generated construction and demolition wastes (C&DWs), waste management hierarchy (WMH), 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle), Circular Economy (CE), frameworks, tools, and approaches of C&DWM. After reviewing the literature this study contributes to the literature by the following means: (a) suitable working definitions of C&DW and C&DWM are provided, (b) an expanded WMH for construction and demolition operations is presented, (c) frameworks of C&DWM are identified and listed as follows: frameworks based on WMH, including 3R principles and CE concept, frameworks focusing on the quantification, estimation, and prediction of generated C&DW, frameworks focusing on effective and sustainable C&DWM, frameworks focusing economic, social, and environmental performance assessment, frameworks based on multi-criteria analysis (MCA), frameworks based on post-disaster recovery period, and other miscellaneous frameworks, and (d) four categories of tools utilized in C&DWM are identified and explained, namely, approaches employed in C&DWM, information technology (IT) tools employed in C&DWM, multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) tools employed in C&DWM, and C&DWM technologies. Moreover, this study also found that CE, and green rating system (GRS) are widely used approaches, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Geographic Information System, and Big Data are the extensively used IT tools, Analytical Hierarchy Process, FUZZY, TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution), Weighted Summation, Elimination and Choice Expressing the Reality II, Elimination and Choice Expressing the Reality III, Evaluation of Mixed Data, and REGIME (REG) are the widely used MCA tools in C&DWM, and Prefabricated Construction and Modular Construction are broadly used C&DWM technologies. Furthermore, it has been observed that the application of the Analytic Networking Process (ANP) and hybridization of ANP, FUZZY, and TOPSIS tools do not catch considerable attention in the literature for conducting MCA, although it yields more precise outcomes. Additionally, most previous research has focused on the estimation of generated C&DW, but less attention has been given to forecasting the generated C&DW due to inadequate available C&DW data. This review article also assists C&DWM practitioners, academics, stakeholders, and contractors in choosing appropriate frameworks and tools for C&DWM while managing C&DW.

Abstract:Adsorption is the most widely adopted, effective, and reliable treatment process for the removal of inorganic and organic contaminants from wastewater. One of the major issues with the adsorption-treatment process for the removal of contaminants from wastewater streams is the recovery and sustainable management of spent adsorbents. This review focuses on the effectiveness of emerging adsorbents and how the spent adsorbents could be recovered, regenerated, and further managed through reuse or safe disposal. The critical analysis of both conventional and emerging adsorbents on organic and inorganic contaminants in wastewater systems are evaluated. The various recovery and regeneration techniques of spent adsorbents including magnetic separation, filtration, thermal desorption and decomposition, chemical desorption, supercritical fluid desorption, advanced oxidation process and microbial assisted adsorbent regeneration are discussed in detail. The current challenges for the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents and the methodologies used for solving those problems are covered. The spent adsorbents are managed through regeneration for reuse (such as soil amendment, capacitor, catalyst/catalyst support) or safe disposal involving incineration and landfilling. Sustainable management of spent adsorbents, including processes involved in the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents for reuse, is examined in the context of resource recovery and circular economy. Finally, the review ends with the current drawbacks in the recovery and management of the spent adsorbents and the future directions for the economic and environmental feasibility of the system for industrial-scale application.

Abstract:Construction and demolition waste (C&DW) as a direct consequence of rapid urbanization is increasing around the world. C&DW generation has been identified as one of the major issues in the construction industry due to its direct impacts on the environment as well as the efficiency of construction industry. It is estimated that an overall of 35% of C&DW is landfilled globally, therefore, effective C&DW management is crucial in order to minimize detrimental impacts of C&DW for the environment. As the industry cannot continue to practice if the resources on which it depends are depleted, C&DW management needs to be implemented in an effective way. Despite considering many well-developed strategies for C&DW management, the outputs of the implementation of these strategies is far from optimum. The main reason of this inefficiency is due to inadequate understanding of principal factors, which play a vital role in C&DW management. Therefore, the aim of this research is to critically scrutinize the concept of C&DW and its managerial issues in a systematic way to come up with the effective C&DW management. In order to achieve this aim, and based on a systematic review of 97 research papers relevant to effective C&DW management, this research considers two main categories as fundamental factors affecting C&DW management namely, C&DW management hierarchy including reduce, reuse, and recycle strategies, and effective C&DW management contributing factors, including C&DW management from sustainability perspective, C&DW stakeholders' attitudes, C&DW project life cycle, and C&DW management tools. Subsequently, these factors are discussed in detail and findings are scrutinized in order to clarify current and future practices of C&DW management from both academic and practical perspectives.

Abstract:The by-products generated during the recycling of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, namely waste residue (W R ) and dust powder (DP), are typically regarded as low-quality waste and subjected to landfill disposal. These by-products account for approximately 20% of the C&D waste, thereby occupying a large landfill capacity. This paper explores the utilization potential of W R and DP obtained from C&D waste. The physical and chemical characteristics of W R and DP were analyzed and their effects on cementitious composites were studied. The flowability, mechanical properties, and microstructural characteristics of the W R or DP contained mortar were evaluated. To enhance DP's practical applications, diverse alkali activators were adopted. The results showed that W R has potential to be used as a replacement for fine aggregates, and replacing less than 20% of natural sand by W R will not significantly affect the strength of mortar. Substituting cement with DP will significantly decrease the mortar strength, but the strength can be improved by activating the DP with an alkali activator. The activator with the best effect is Ca(OH) 2 , which can increase the mortar activity index to 69.0% with 4% addition. The current study provides valuable information for C&D waste management and can significantly improve the reuse value of low-quality C&D waste product, which contributes to reducing the amount of landfilled C&D waste.

Abstract:The rapid generation rate of solid waste is due to the increasing population and industrialization. Nowadays, solid waste has been a major concerning problem in handling and disposal thus adsorption treatment process has been introduced which is an effective and low-cost method in removing organic and inorganic compounds from leachates such as chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N). A most commonly adsorbent used for the removal of organic and inorganic compounds is activated carbon (AC), yet the main disadvantage is being too expensive in cost. Many researchers tried to use low-cost adsorbent waste materials, such as peat soil, limestone etc. This review article reveals a list of low-cost adsorbent and their capacity of adsorption for the removal of COD and NH3-N. Furthermore, the preparation of these low-cost adsorbents as well as their removal efficiencies, relative cost, and limitation are discussed. The most efficient, cost-effective, and environment-friendly adsorbent can be used for the removal of COD and NH3-N thus can be provided for commercial usage or water treatment plant.Implications: The concentration of organic constituents (COD) and ammonia nitrogen in stabilized landfill leachate has significant strong influences of human health and environmental. This review article shows the list of low-cost adsorbent (i.e., Activated carbon, Peat soil, Zeolite, Limestone, and cockle shell and their capacity of adsorption for the removal of COD and ammonia nitrogen. This would be greatly applicable in future research era as well as conventionally minimizing high-cost materials use and thereby lowering the operating cost of leachate wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The increasing amount of solid waste has become a significant environmental issue that has garnered significant attention and concern. In an effort to mitigate the adverse effects commonly associated with prominent sectors and simultaneously promote credibility in the energy- and resource-intensive realms of development and construction, significant endeavors have been directed towards competitive areas of strength for the purpose of recycling, with the ultimate goal of utilizing such materials in sustainable development products. The present study provides an overview of the ongoing evaluations pertaining to the utilization of conventional and enhanced solid waste for the production of geo-polymer composites. Great attention is devoted to the implementation of these geo-polymer composites. The primary findings of this study revealed that both ordinary and sophisticated solid waste have the potential to be integrated into geo-polymer composites in various forms, such as precursor, complete, additive, reinforcement fiber, or filler material. The findings indicate that the utilization of such waste may have a negative impact on certain properties of geo-polymer composites. However, this issue can be mitigated through the implementation of an open degree plan and appropriate treatment techniques, which can facilitate the recycling process. In conclusion, a concise discourse is presented to acknowledge the significant need for future research and enhancement in advancing the utilization of solid waste materials in the emerging sustainable geo-polymer industry. This study proposes an improved ecological solution for managing municipal and industrial solid waste by transforming waste materials into environmentally friendly construction materials with consistent properties. Special attention is given to the overall performance of geo-polymer composite products. The primary findings of this study reveal that urban and industrial solid waste can be efficiently incorporated into geo-polymer composites through the use of precursors, aggregates, additives, reinforcing fibers, or filler materials. The results indicate that while the inclusion of waste materials may negatively impact certain properties of geo-polymer composites, a well-designed protocol and effective treatment approach can mitigate these adverse effects and facilitate the recycling process. Finally, a brief dialogue is presented to differentiate the key needs in forthcoming research and development aimed at enhancing the utilization of solid waste materials in the upcoming sustainable geopolymer sector. This study provides guidance for the sustainable management of urban waste by transforming waste materials into environmentally friendly construction materials.
Enhancing Environmental Remediation: Advancements in Chemically Crosslinked Cyclodextrin‐Based Materials for Organic and Inorganic Pollutant Removal

Abstract:Chemically modified cyclodextrins can remove pollutants from wastewater, cross‐linked cyclodextrin can adsorb pesticides, pharmaceuticals & dyes, mechanisms of contaminant adsorption critically discussed, challenges and future prospects of cyclodextrin based adsorbents outlined. Concern over the harmful impacts of pollutants on human health and the environment has increased in recent decades due to their widespread presence in water resources. These pollutants include pesticides, poisonous textile dyes, and micropollutants. It is essential to remove these pollutants from wastewater to enhance the quality of water for industrial usage. Because of externally hydrophilic and internally hydrophobic qualities, cyclodextrin and its derivatives have shown great promise as adsorbents for the treatment of wastewater. While cyclodextrins cannot be used as adsorbents on their own due to their water solubility, they can be efficiently polymerized with different types of cross‐linkers to increase their stability and effectiveness. This review article examines chemically crosslinked materials based on cyclodextrin and its derivatives, utilizing various cross‐linkers such as epichlorohydrin, glutaraldehyde, citric acid, N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide and maleic anhydride. These materials are evaluated for their effectiveness in adsorbing textile dyes, micropollutants, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides from wastewater. Additionally, this article provides a detailed explanation of adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and kinetic isotherms for the removal of contaminants. It also discusses the mechanism of contaminant adsorption, and reusability of adsorbents. Finally, this study delves into the challenges and exciting future prospects of CD‐based adsorbents, highlighting their potential to revolutionize wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is one of the largest contributors to global waste streams, simultaneously posing significant environmental and resource management challenges. The management of CDW, particularly its potential for energy recovery and industrial symbiosis, has garnered increasing attention as part of a circular economy approach. This comprehensive review explores global practices in CDW management, analysing theoretical developments, technological advancements, and emerging resource recovery and reuse trends. Background: CDW accounts for more than a third of all waste generated in the EU. A wide variety of materials, such as concrete, bricks, wood, glass, metals, and plastics, make it a very un-homogenous waste stream with high potential for material recovery through different approaches. Methods: This review draws on an extensive analysis of scientific literature, case studies, and industry reports to assess current practices in the CDW stream and assessment of the feasibility of energy recovery, industrial symbiosis, and object reconstruction. Results: The originality of the current research is based on a Latvian case study on CDW management that provides valuable insights into household-level practices and progress towards relevant UN SDGs. Conclusions: Various CDW streams have an undeniable potential for valorization through various approaches. Currently, the most common approach is recovery and recycling, although CDW has the potential to broaden its application within the circular economy framework. For instance, industrial symbiosis is a solution that can not only boost the valorization of CDW but also significantly increase material circularity.

Abstract:Abstract. In India, the construction industry is growing at twice the world average. This leads to a significant accumulation of C&D waste. This typically includes asphalt, steel, concrete, bricks, wood and other building materials. It is estimated on a conservative basis that over 25-30 million tons of C&D waste is generated which clogs rivers, blocks traffic and occupies land / agricultural space which in turn creates pollution, solid waste production, discharge of dust and gas and leads to additional utilization of natural resources including non-renewable resources, thereby depleting the available resources. Only little amount of construction and demolition concrete debris is recycled or reused. Construction and demolition waste generation and handling issues are being focused to achieve sustainable goals. Based on this study, experimental investigations are carried out to evaluate the material properties and to study the strength characteristics and effect of partial replacement (20 %, 30 % and 40 %) of both fine and coarse aggregate obtained from construction and demolition waste (CDW) in the construction of intermediate road traffic concrete barriers.

Abstract:The exponential growth in textile fiber production and commensurate release of textile waste-based effluents into the environment has significant impacts on human wellbeing and the long-term planetary health. To abate these negative impacts and promote resource circularity, efforts are being made to recycle these waste materials via conversion into adsorbents for water decontamination. This review critically examines plant- and regenerated cellulose-based fibers for removing water pollutants such as heavy metals, dyes, pharmaceutical and petrochemical wastes. The review reveals that chemical modification reactions such as grafting, sulfonation, carboxymethylation, amination, amidoximation, xanthation, carbon activation, and surface coating are normally employed, and the adsorption mechanisms often involve Van der Waals attraction, electrostatic interaction, complexation, chelation, ion exchange, and precipitation. Furthermore, the adsorption processes and thus the adsorption mechanisms are influenced by factors such as surface properties of adsorbents, pollutant characteristics including composition, porosity/pore size distribution, specific surface area, hydrophobicity/hydrophobicity, and molecular interactions. Besides, feasibility of the approaches in terms of handling and reuse, environmental fate, and economic impact was evaluated, in addition to the performances of the adsorbents, the prospects, and challenges. As current cost analysis is non-exhaustive, it is recommended that researchers focus on extensive cost analysis to fully appreciate the true cost effectiveness of employing these waste materials. In addition, more attention must be paid to potential chemical leaching, post-adsorption handling, and disposal. Based on the review, fiber precursors and textile fiber wastes are viable alternative adsorbents for sustainable water treatment and environmental management, and government entities must leverage on these locally accessible materials to promote recyclability and circularity.

Abstract:The present study proposes to investigate the feasibility of using construction and demolition waste (CDW) as an aqueous remediation agent through adsorption. The CDW, with and without chemical and thermal pre-activation, was evaluated to remove the methylene blue (MB) dye from the water solution. Variables interfering with adsorption processes, such as adsorbent dosage, solution pH, and particle size, were evaluated. The material was characterized by pHZPC, FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS, and TG. The kinetic and equilibrium data better fitted the Elovich and Sips models, respectively. A maximum adsorption capacity of 18.62 mg g-1 at 60 °C was observed. Thermodynamic data indicated that adsorption occurred through a spontaneous and favorable process governed mainly by physical processes. The regeneration studies were carried out using processes based on the Fenton reaction, where the catalytic action of the iron naturally present in the CDW was evaluated. The results showed that the desorption balance was the main limiting factor for the effective regeneration of the saturated material. Adding Fe2+ to the system made this process suitable for the regeneration of the CDW and degradation of the pollutant in the aqueous phase. A regeneration efficiency of 65%, maintained practically constant during five adsorption-regeneration cycles, was observed. These results highlight the high potential of using CDWs as an adsorbent material.
