Abstract:Introduction: Social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, among others have been used as tools for staging protests, opinion polls, campaign strategy, medium of agitation and a place of interest expression especially during elections. Aim: In this work, a Natural Language Processing framework is designed to understand Nigeria 2023 presidential election based on public opinion using Twitter dataset. Methods: Two million tweets with 18 features were collected from Twitter containing public and personal tweets of the three top contestants - Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Bola Tinubu - in the forthcoming 2023 Presidential election. Sentiment analysis was performed on the preprocessed dataset using three machine learning models namely: Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Recurrent Neural Network, Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and Linear Support Vector Classifier (LSVC) models. This study spanned ten weeks starting from the candidates' declaration of intent to run for Presidency. Results: The sentiment models gave an accuracy, precision, recall, AUC and f-measure of 88%, 82.7%, 87.2%, 87.6% and 82.9% respectively for LSTM; 94%, 88.5%, 92.5%, 94.7% and 91.7% respectively for BERT and 73%, 81.4%, 76.4%, 81.2% and 79.2% respectively for LSVC. Result also showed that Peter Obi has the highest total impressions the highest positive sentiments, Tinubu has the highest network of active friends while Atiku has the highest number of followers. Conclusion: Sentiment analysis and other Natural Language Understanding tasks can aid in the understanding of the social media space in terms of public opinion mining. We conclude that opinion mining from Twitter can form a general basis for generating insights for election as well as modeling election outcomes.

Abstract:Nigeria operates under a multi-party system with more than 18 registered political parties. Since the return to democratic rule in 1999, the political scene has been predominantly dominated by two major parties: the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC). Recently, however, emerging parties like The Labour Party (LP) and the New Nigerian People's Party (NNPP) have started gaining traction. Social media has become a pivotal part of modern society. Twitter (now known as X) has emerged as a significant medium for news dissemination, public opinions expression, and emotional responses on various topics. Its ability to allow real-time sharing of views and experiences on current affairs and personal matters has made it a powerful tool in shaping and reflecting public sentiment. The use of Twitter in Nigeria exemplifies its role as a versatile medium for expressing thoughts and feelings, thereby generating a substantial amount of data for sentiment analysis. Deep Learning is a branch of Artificial intelligence that uses multiple layer techniques to extract features from data. It has the capacity to adequately recognize pattern from data to produce insights. There is a dynamic interplay among political developments, social media use, and sentiment analysis using deep learning. This interplay highlights the evolving nature of public discourse and opinion formation in Nigeria. People's opinions about the Nigeria's 2023 Presidential Election were obtained from Twitter using the Twitter API and Python. The dataset contains 364,867 tweets that can be used in predicting the outcome of future elections in Nigeria and for comparing the performances of different models and techniques of sentiment analysis. Abstract:The research article investigates the satisfaction of voters with the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the 2023 Nigerian presidential election by conducting a sentiment analysis of Twitter posts. The article aims to analyze public opinion and sentiment towards the BVAS system and provide valuable insights that can inform policy decisions and actions related to the implementation and improvement of the system. In this study, Twitter posts related to BVAS and the election were collected using the Twitter streaming API. A total of 997,400 tweets were obtained. The data preprocessing phase involved cleaning the tweets by removing noise, filtering out irrelevant comments, and segmenting the text into words or phrases. The sentiment analysis itself was conducted using the Robustly Optimized BERT Pretraining Approach (ROBERTa), which is a language model introduced by Facebook AI. ROBERTa is a powerful model for sequence modeling and is optimized for sentiment analysis. It predicts the sentiment of each tweet as either positive or negative. This study reveals that attitudes toward the employment of BVAS in the Nigerian presidential election of 2023 are neutral, the acceptance rate is low compared to the rejection rate. Although, there is a large percentage of people who are unfavorable to the introduction of this technology. The study utilized Twitter data exclusively for sentiment analysis, which may limit its accuracy in representing the sentiments of the entire population. Twitter users may not be a fully representative sample and could introduce biases. Additionally, the sentiment analysis focused on English tweets only, potentially overlooking sentiments expressed in other languages spoken in Nigeria, like Hausa, Yoruba, or Igbo. To achieve a more comprehensive analysis, future research could expand to include sentiment analysis of tweets in different languages.

Abstract:On December 7, 2020, Ghanaians participated in the polls to determine their president for the next four years. To gain insights from this presidential election, we conducted stance analysis (which is not always equivalent to sentiment analysis) to understand how Twitter, a popular social media platform, reflected the opinions of its users regarding the two main presidential candidates. We collected a total of 99,356 tweets using the Twitter API (Tweepy) and manually annotated 3,090 tweets into three classes: Against, Neutral, and Support. We then performed preprocessing on the tweets. The resulting dataset was evaluated using two lexicon-based approaches, VADER and TextBlob, as well as five supervised machine learning-based approaches: Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), Multinomial Na\"ive Bayes (MNB), Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), and Random Forest (RF), based on metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. The best performance was achieved by Logistic Regression with an accuracy of 71.13%. We utilized Logistic Regression to classify all the extracted tweets and subsequently conducted an analysis and discussion of the results. EkoHate: Abusive Language and Hate Speech Detection for Code-switched Political Discussions on Nigerian Twitter

Abstract:Nigerians have a notable online presence and actively discuss political and topical matters. This was particularly evident throughout the 2023 general election, where Twitter was used for campaigning, fact-checking and verification, and even positive and negative discourse. However, little or none has been done in the detection of abusive language and hate speech in Nigeria. In this paper, we curated code-switched Twitter data directed at three musketeers of the governorship election on the most populous and economically vibrant state in Nigeria; Lagos state, with the view to detect offensive speech in political discussions. We developed EkoHate -- an abusive language and hate speech dataset for political discussions between the three candidates and their followers using a binary (normal vs offensive) and fine-grained four-label annotation scheme. We analysed our dataset and provided an empirical evaluation of state-of-the-art methods across both supervised and cross-lingual transfer learning settings. In the supervised setting, our evaluation results in both binary and four-label annotation schemes show that we can achieve 95.1 and 70.3 F1 points respectively. Furthermore, we show that our dataset adequately transfers very well to three publicly available offensive datasets (OLID, HateUS2020, and FountaHate), generalizing to political discussions in other regions like the US.

Abstract:This work investigates empirically the impact of political party control over its candidates or vice versa on winning an election using a natural language processing technique called sentiment analysis (SA). To do this, a set of 7430 tweets bearing or related to #AnambraDecides2017 was streamed during the November 18, 2017, Anambra State gubernatorial election. These are Twitter discussions on the top five political parties and their candidates termed political actors in this paper. We conduct polarity and subjectivity sentiment analyses on all the tweets considering time as a useful dimension of SA. Furthermore, we use the word frequency to find words most associated with the political actors in a given time. We find most talked about topics using a topic modeling algorithm and how the computed sentiments and most frequent words are related to the topics per political actor. Among other things, we deduced from the experimental results that even though a political party serves as a platform that sales the personality of a candidate, the acceptance of the candidate/party adds to the winning of an election. For example, we found the winner of the election Willie Obiano benefiting from the values his party share among the people of the State. Associating his name with his party, All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) displays more positive sentiments and the subjective sentiment analysis indicates that Twitter users mentioning APGA are less emotionally subjective in their tweets than the other parties.

Fever and neutropenia: bacterial etiology revealed by serological methods

Abstract:In a prospective study, 91 episodes of fever in neutropenic children with cancer were evaluated. Fifteen episodes were septicemias, verified by a positive blood culture, 62 were fevers of unknown origin, 6 were focal infections and 8 were of other etiologies (i.e. drug fevers and viral infections). Serum antibody responses to bacteria were measured in paired sera by an enzyme immunoassay method. Bacterial infection was demonstrated serologically in 20% of documented septicemias, in 35% of fevers of unknown origin and occasionally in the other groups. Tests were available and found positive in the fever of unknown origin group for Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis and enterobacteria. Some had multiple etiology. In conclusion, bacterial serology is a promising method of identifying bacterial etiology in fever of otherwise unknown origin in neutropenic children with cancer.

Abstract:The democratic system is highly respected in Indonesia. The Indonesian state government organizes its government in a democratic manner, namely, it is run by, for, and with the consent of the people. Democracy is held through general elections to occupy leadership and power seats, followed by political parties. The high enthusiasm of Twitter social media users with the electability of presidential candidates proposed by political parties in the 2024 general election and the existence of a survey of potential presidents from national institutions, as well as mass and social media coverage of presidential candidates suggested by the political parties, generates opinions, attitudes, and emotions among people from all walks of life through tweets. The availability of abundant data on Twitter and other social media can provide useful information. Tweet data is obtained by crawling data using the help of the Python library, namely snscrape. The sentiment analysis uses a mixed method, namely by using machine learning and Lexicon Based, through the process of fine-grained sentiment analysis using the technique, namely, knowing the level of opinion polarity by grouping netizen responses and opinions into three parts: positive, neutral, and negative, with the help of machine learning and natural language processing. The results of the study were carried out by experimenting with four scenarios by dividing test and training data by 60:40, 70:30, 80:20, and 90:10. Measurement of the accuracy value results in the classification of the Nave Bayes Classifier Algorithm as 68%, 67%, 70%, and 71%. From the tweet data, it is clear that positive sentiment is dominant on the research topic.

Abstract:Numerous successes have been achieved in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, initially using various precautionary measures like lockdowns, social distancing, and the use of face masks. More recently, various vaccinations have been developed to aid in the prevention or reduction of the severity of the COVID-19 infection. Despite the effectiveness of the precautionary measures and the vaccines, there are several controversies that are massively shared on social media platforms like Twitter. In this paper, we explore the use of state-of-the-art transformer-based language models to study people's acceptance of vaccines in Nigeria. We developed a novel dataset by crawling multi-lingual tweets using relevant hashtags and keywords. Our analysis and visualizations revealed that most tweets expressed neutral sentiments about COVID-19 vaccines, with some individuals expressing positive views, and there was no strong preference for specific vaccine types, although Moderna received slightly more positive sentiment. We also found out that fine-tuning a pre-trained LLM with an appropriate dataset can yield competitive results, even if the LLM was not initially pre-trained on the specific language of that dataset.

Abstract:Sentiment analysis is an activity carried out to see the level of public sentiment or public opinion relating to goods or services and even a figure, both political and celebrity figures. In this study, a sentiment analysis application for twitter analysis was conducted on 2019 Republic of Indonesia presidential candidates, using the python programming language. There are several steps taken to conduct this sentiment analysis, which is to collect data using libraries in python, text processing, testing training data, and text classification using the Naïve Bayes method. The Naïve Bayes method is used to help classify classes or the level of sentiments of society. The results of this study found that the value of the positive sentiment polarity of the Jokowi-Ma'ruf Amin pair was 45.45% and a negative value of 54.55%, while the Prabowo-Sandiaga pair received a positive sentiment score of 44.32% and negative 55.68%. Then the combined data was tested from the training data used for each presidential candidate and get an accuracy of 80.90% ≈ 80.1%. In this study a comparison was carried out using the naïve bayes, svm and K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) methods which were tested using RapidMiner by producing a naïve bayes accuracy value of 75.58%, svm accuracy value of 63.99% and K-NN accuracy value of 73.34%.

Abstract:Social media is nowadays a vital platform where people can share their feelings about any incident, product, or any issue. Twitter is one of those platforms which are very popular. If we must make use of this to extract some information and to use that to make recommendation systems, to know the mental status of any person or to find the review, we have to perform the sentiment analysis of those tweets. Recently, deep learning approaches emerged as powerful computational models that discover intricate semantic representations of texts automatically from data without feature engineering. This present work discusses how to find the sentiments from a stream of tweets from the twitter, blogging site subjected to pre-processing and classification supported on emotion of the subject matter as "POSITIVE" or "NEGATIVE". We have used a twitter dataset of 1.6 million data consisting of general tweets on various domains with 800,000 POSITIVE and 800,000 NEGATIVE sentiments. We have developed 3 models with Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), Bi-directional RNN, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). Our work focuses on the way which will help us to understand the basic sentiment of people which they want to express by their tweets, comment, or blogs. We have obtained highest accuracy of 83.50%, F1 score of 84.60% from our model with LSTM architecture in analysing the sentiment. LSTMs are specifically designed to address the vanishing gradient problem that occurs in traditional RNNs when learning long-term dependencies. In sentiment analysis, understanding the sentiment of a tweet may require capturing dependencies between words that are spread across a potentially long sequence. LSTMs are better at retaining and utilizing information over extended sequences.

Abstract:This paper presents the use of Bayesian networks and K-Nearest Neighbor algorithms for predicting election results. Our motivation stemmed from the complexities of the election data available, which spans over 120,000 voting locations across 36 states in Nigeria, and the requirement to develop a procedure that takes into consideration voter trends that are influenced by political parties seeking to win. The system architecture's translation was utilised, and the prototyping methodology was adopted. In order to realize the requirements, the system was designed and implemented using Java and MySQL in accordance with specifications. Since the outcome is positive, it can serve as a benchmark for further study in this field, particularly when it comes to using data mining tools to analyze election results.

Abstract:U.S. Presidential Election forecasting has been a research interest for several decades. Currently, election prediction consists of two main approaches: traditional models that incorporate economic data and poll surveys, and models that leverage Twitter (or X) and other social media platforms due to their increasing popularity in the past decade. However, traditional approaches have predominantly focused on national-level predictions, while social media-based approaches often oversimplify the nuanced differences between online discourse and the broader voting population's political landscape. In this work, we perform a hybrid method of both the machine learning algorithm and the sentiment analysis on the state level with various independent variables including census data, economic indicators, polling averages, and the newly defined average sentiment scores from Twitter. Our prediction for the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election yielded promising results. Most of our models successfully predicted a victory for the Democratic candidate with 96% accuracy using Gradient Boosting Trees and Multi-Layer Perceptron algorithms. This novel prediction framework addresses the limitations of existing U.S. Presidential Election forecasting approaches, particularly in terms of state-level predictions. It provides a valuable foundation for future research in this field and contributes to advancing our understanding of election dynamics.

Abstract:This study examines the problem of Twitter sentimental analysis, which categorizes Tweets as positive or negative. Many applications require analyzing public mood, including organizations attempting to determine the market response to their products, political election forecasting, and macroeconomic phenomena such as stock exchange forecasting. Twitter is a social networking microblogging and digital platform that allows users to update their status in a maximum of 140 characters. It is a rapidly expanding platform with over 200 million registered users, 100 million active users, and half of the people log on every day, tweeting out over 250 million tweets. Public opinion analysis is critical for applications, including firms looking to understand market responses to their products, predict political choices, and forecast socio-economic phenomena like bonds. Through the deep learning methodologies, a recurrent neural network with convolutional neural network models was constructed to do Twitter sentiment analysis to predict if a tweet is positive or negative using a dataset of tweets. The applied methods were trained using a publicly available dataset of 1,600,000 tweets. Several model architectures were trained, with the best one achieving a (93.91%) success rate in recognizing the tweets' matching sentiment. The model's high success rate makes it a valuable advisor and a technique that might be improved to enable an integrated sentiment analyzer system that can work in real-world situations for political marketing.
Two-Stage Classifier for Campaign Negativity Detection using Axis Embeddings: A Case Study on Tweets of Political Users during 2021 Presidential Election in Iran

Abstract:In elections around the world, the candidates may turn their campaigns toward negativity due to the prospect of failure and time pressure. In the digital age, social media platforms such as Twitter are rich sources of political discourse. Therefore, despite the large amount of data that is published on Twitter, the automatic system for campaign negativity detection can play an essential role in understanding the strategy of candidates and parties in their campaigns. In this paper, we propose a hybrid model for detecting campaign negativity consisting of a two-stage classifier that combines the strengths of two machine learning models. Here, we have collected Persian tweets from 50 political users, including candidates and government officials. Then we annotated 5,100 of them that were published during the year before the 2021 presidential election in Iran. In the proposed model, first, the required datasets of two classifiers based on the cosine similarity of tweet embeddings with axis embeddings (which are the average of embedding in positive and negative classes of tweets) from the training set (85\%) are made, and then these datasets are considered the training set of the two classifiers in the hybrid model. Finally, our best model (RF-RF) was able to achieve 79\% for the macro F1 score and 82\% for the weighted F1 score. By running the best model on the rest of the tweets of 50 political users that were published one year before the election and with the help of statistical models, we find that the publication of a tweet by a candidate has nothing to do with the negativity of that tweet, and the presence of the names of political persons and political organizations in the tweet is directly related to its negativity.

Abstract:Sentiment analysis is one of the most widely studied applications in NLP, but most work focuses on languages with large amounts of data. We introduce the first large-scale human-annotated Twitter sentiment dataset for the four most widely spoken languages in Nigeria (Hausa, Igbo, Nigerian-Pidgin, and Yor\`ub\'a ) consisting of around 30,000 annotated tweets per language (and 14,000 for Nigerian-Pidgin), including a significant fraction of code-mixed tweets. We propose text collection, filtering, processing and labeling methods that enable us to create datasets for these low-resource languages. We evaluate a rangeof pre-trained models and transfer strategies on the dataset. We find that language-specific models and language-adaptivefine-tuning generally perform best. We release the datasets, trained models, sentiment lexicons, and code to incentivizeresearch on sentiment analysis in under-represented languages.

Abstract:Abstract: The rapid spread of social media platforms, especially Twitter, has provided a rich and valuable source of data for understanding public opinion. This thesis presents a comprehensive study on analyzing the sentiments of Arab tweeters, intending to reveal public opinion trends using advanced machine learning techniques. The study begins by collecting a large data set of tweets in Arabic. Preprocessing steps are carefully implemented to deal with the unique linguistic characteristics of Arabic, including encoding, normalization, and deletion. The BERT system was used for the application and the model was created using AJGT.csv Dataset. The evaluation was performed using different metrics. The test results were as follows: 0.9822 % accuracy, precision 0.9823, recall 0.9822, F1 0.982265 and FPR 0.0177. The findings of this research provide significant insights into the prevailing public opinion trends in the Arab world, revealing the potential of sentiment analysis as a powerful tool for policymakers, businesses, and researchers to gauge public sentiment and make informed decisions. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the limitations of the study and suggestions for future research directions, emphasizing the need for more sophisticated models and larger datasets to further enhance the accuracy and reliability of sentiment analysis in the Arabic language.

Abstract:Sentiment analysis of social media data consists of attitudes, assessments, and emotions which can be considered a way human think. Understanding and classifying the large collection of documents into positive and negative aspects are a very difficult task. Social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram provide a platform in order to gather information about peoples sentiments and opinions. Considering the fact that people spend hours daily on social media and share their opinion on various different topics helps us analyze sentiments better. More and more companies are using social media tools to provide various services and interact with customers. Sentiment Analysis (SA) classifies the polarity of given tweets to positive and negative tweets in order to understand the sentiments of the public. This paper aims to perform sentiment analysis of real-time 2019 election twitter data using the feature selection model word2vec and the machine learning algorithm random forest for sentiment classification. Word2vec with Random Forest improves the accuracy of sentiment analysis significantly compared to traditional methods such as BOW and TF-IDF. Word2vec improves the quality of features by considering contextual semantics of words in a text hence improving the accuracy of machine learning and sentiment analysis.

Abstract:Sentiment analysis is an automated approach which is utilized in process of analysing textual data to describe public opinion. The sentiment analysis has major role in creating impact in the day‐to‐day life of individuals. However, a precise interpretation of text still relies as a major concern in classifying sentiment. So, this research introduced Bidirectional Long Short Term Memory with Ranger AdaBelief Optimizer (Bi‐LSTM RAO) to classify sentiment of tweets. Initially, data is obtained from Twitter API, Sentiment 140 and Stanford Sentiment Treebank‐2 (SST‐2). The raw data is pre‐processed and it is subjected to feature extraction which is performed using Bag of Words (BoW) and Term Frequency‐Inverse Document Frequency (TF‐IDF). The feature selection is performed using Gazelle Optimization Algorithm (GOA) which removes the irrelevant or redundant features that maximized model performance and classification is performed using Bi LSTM–RAO. The RAO optimizes the loss function of Bi‐LSTM model that maximized accuracy. The classification accuracy of proposed method for Twitter API, Sentiment 140 and SST 2 dataset is obtained as 909.44%, 99.71% and 99.86%, respectively. These obtained results are comparably higher than ensemble framework, Robustly Optimized BERT and Gated Recurrent Unit (RoBERTa‐GRU), Logistic Regression‐Long Short Term Memory (LR‐LSTM), Convolutional Bi‐LSTM, Sentiment and Context Aware Attention‐based Hybrid Deep Neural Network (SCA‐HDNN) and Stochastic Gradient Descent optimization based Stochastic Gate Neural Network (SGD‐SGNN).

Abstract:With the proliferation of social media over the last decade, determining people's attitude with respect to a specific topic, document, interaction or events has fueled research interest in natural language processing and introduced a new channel called sentiment and emotion analysis. For instance, businesses routinely look to develop systems to automatically understand their customer conversations by identifying the relevant content to enhance marketing their products and managing their reputations. Previous efforts to assess people's sentiment on Twitter have suggested that Twitter may be a valuable resource for studying political sentiment and that it reflects the offline political landscape. According to a Pew Research Center report, in January 2016 44 percent of US adults stated having learned about the presidential election through social media. Furthermore, 24 percent reported use of social media posts of the two candidates as a source of news and information, which is more than the 15 percent who have used both candidates' websites or emails combined. The first presidential debate between Trump and Hillary was the most tweeted debate ever with 17.1 million tweets.
