Abstract:BackgroundMany residency programs have struggled to meaningfully meet the ACGME quality improvement (QI) requirements. Similarly, our residents were receiving limited QI education, and their longitudinal projects were ineffective.AimCreate an integrated didactic and experiential learning environment that equips residents to become leaders of QI.Setting and ParticipantsInternal medicine (IM) residency program of 45 residents in a large community hospital.Program DescriptionThis curriculum included eight content areas. Games, real-life application, and project celebrations cultivated engagement. Sessions occurred during residents' 2-week outpatient rotations. Project development was standardized.Program EvaluationThe QI Knowledge Application Tool-Revised (QIKAT-R) and separate surveys were used before and after the curriculum's implementation to evaluate resident QI knowledge and confidence, respectively. We also tracked QI scholarship and faculty engagement. Mean QIKAT-R scores improved significantly from 7.0 (SD 2.9) at baseline to 16.6 (SD 4.7) post-curriculum (n = 37 pairs, p = 0.043). Residents' adverse event reporting increased from 44% (19/43) at baseline to 90% (28/31) post-curriculum. Seven presentations were accepted for local, regional, and national conferences, compared with one presentation the preceding year.DiscussionA QI curriculum can be successfully integrated in a "4 + 2" program.

Efficacy of a Longitudinal Project-Based Quality Improvement Curriculum in Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship

Abstract:Quality improvement knowledge is a requirement of fellowship training. Our goal was to evaluate the efficacy of a 3-year quality improvement and patient safety (QI/PS) curriculum that gives fellows both didactic knowledge and first-hand experience with improvement science, and meets Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) requirements. Knowledge assessment is obtained through pre- and post-surveys. A secondary measure of success is academic products resulting from fellows' QI/PS work, and future participation in QI/PS efforts. Since 2019, 51 pre-tests and 36 post-tests were completed, showing improvement across all competencies. Fellows have produced one published manuscript, two poster presentations, and two oral presentations describing their improvement work. Additionally, mentoring faculty members have gone on to lead other QI work throughout the division. This longitudinal QI/PS curriculum provides both knowledge and experience in QI/PS work. It also creates opportunities for academic publications and presentations, builds faculty expertise, and most importantly, works to improve multiple aspects of patient care. This curriculum can serve as a model for other cardiology fellowships working to meet CLER requirements.
Education Research: Sustained Implementation of Quality Improvement Practices Is Observed in Early Career Physicians Following a Neurology Resident QI Curriculum

Abstract:Background and objectives: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology expect engagement in quality improvement (QI) activities for all residents and practicing neurologists. Our neurology residency program instituted an experiential Neurology Residency QI Curriculum in 2015 for all residents. In this study, we aimed to characterize the role of QI engagement in the early-career paths of program graduates. Methods: We distributed an online survey evaluating QI training, scholarship, and leadership (before, during, and after residency training) to all individuals who graduated from our residency program (graduation years 2017-2021). Primary outcomes were QI project leadership or mentorship and QI scholarship (projects, posters, and publications) after residency. Predictors of these outcomes were also evaluated using Fisher exact test. Results: Twenty-nine of 50 graduates (58%) completed the survey. Median time from residency graduation was 3 years. Of the respondents, 14% actively participated in a QI project before residency, 83% during residency, and 48% after graduating. In addition, 41% had led or mentored a QI project and 34% had performed QI scholarship since residency. Fourteen percent of participants held formal roles in QI or patient safety, while 24% received formal full-time equivalents for QI work. Significant predictors (p < 0.05) of QI leadership included older age, time since graduation, rank, and participation in Clinical Effectiveness Leadership Training (CELT-an institutional QI faculty development course). Significant predictors (p < 0.05) of QI scholarship included older age, time since graduation, participation in CELT, and participation in QI scholarship during residency. QI training, participation, and/or project leadership before residency did not predict either QI leadership or scholarship after residency. Discussion: Many neurology residency graduates continued to lead QI projects and produce QI scholarship in the early years after graduation. However, receiving protected time for leadership and academic work in this area is uncommon. Our findings suggest that more infrastructure, including training, career development, and mentorship, can foster neurologists interested in leading in quality and patient safety. In academic models, promotion pathways that support academic advancement for faculty leading in QI are needed.
An Active-Learning Quality Improvement Curriculum for Faculty in Hospital Medicine

Abstract:Introduction: Despite the growing importance of quality improvement (QI) training in medical education, there is a lack of faculty with expertise in QI at many academic medical centers. In this report, we describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of a QI training program for faculty in hospital medicine at an academic medical center aimed at increasing faculty capacity in QI. Methods: With input from an initial focus group of hospital medicine faculty, we developed a 12-session, active-learning curriculum incorporating core concepts in QI applied to a real-life QI problem. We used a survey instrument to assess changes in self-reported confidence, the Quality Improvement Knowledge Application Tool-Revised to assess changes in applied knowledge, and a second focus group to obtain qualitative feedback regarding the curriculum. Results: Self-reported confidence in numerous QI skills increased after completion of the curriculum; however, concurrent improvement in applied knowledge was not observed. Qualitatively, participants not only described improved understanding of QI methodology and greater confidence contributing to QI initiatives but also a sense they were not prepared to lead a QI project independently. Discussion: An active-learning faculty training program is feasible with limited resources and was associated with increased faculty confidence in QI skills.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires that training programs integrate system-based practice (SBP) and practice-based learning and improvement (PBLI) into internal medicine residency curricula. CONTEXT AND SETTING: We instituted a seminar series and year-long-mentored curriculum designed to engage internal medicine residents in these competencies.METHODS: Residents participate in a seminar series that includes assigned reading and structured discussion with faculty who assist in the development of quality improvement or research projects. Residents pursue projects over the remainder of the year. Monthly works in progress meetings, protected time for inquiry, and continued faculty mentorship guide the residents in their project development. Trainees present their work at hospital-wide grand rounds at the end of the academic year. We performed a survey of residents to assess their self-reported knowledge, attitudes and skills in SBP and PBLI. In addition, blinded faculty scored projects for appropriateness, impact, and feasibility.OUTCOMES: We measured resident self-reported knowledge, attitudes, and skills at the end of the academic year. We found evidence that participants improved their understanding of the context in which they were practicing, and that their ability to engage in quality improvement projects increased. Blinded faculty reviewers favorably ranked the projects' feasibility, impact, and appropriateness. The 'Curriculum of Inquiry' generated 11 quality improvement and research projects during the study period. Barriers to the ongoing work include a limited supply of mentors and delays due to Institutional Review Board approval. Hospital leadership recognizes the importance of the curriculum, and our accreditation manager now cites our ongoing work.CONCLUSIONS: A structured residency-based curriculum facilitates resident demonstration of SBP and practice-based learning and improvement. Residents gain knowledge and skills though this enterprise and hospitals gain access to trainees who help to solve ongoing problems and meet accreditation requirements.

Development of a Quality Improvement/Patient Safety Curriculum to Increase Emergency Medicine Resident Scholarly Activity

Abstract:CONTEXT: There currently is no standard method for teaching Quality Improvement/Patient Safety (QIPS) content to prepare resident physicians planning QIPS projects. As part of the 2015-2016 MSU Statewide Campus System Teach for Quality (Te4Q) learner cohort, the first two authors from the McLaren Oakland Hospital Emergency Medicine (EM) residency program developed a structured multi-phase QIPS curriculum. The curriculum was developed to help a cohort of seven second-year EM residents feel more confident to design and conduct their own QIPS projects.METHODS: After institutional review board project approval was obtained, the first two authors evaluated both the pre and post-curriculum confidence survey scores of enrolled EM residents during May, 2016 as part of their Te4Q program participation.RESULTS: Residents completed a 15-item QIPS confidence survey before and after completing the QIPS curriculum. The mean pre-curriculum score was 3.00 (SD 1.53) on a scale from 0 to 10, indicating that the average sample respondent felt a lower level of comfort concerning their ability to design and conduct a prospective QIPS project. The mean post-curriculum confidence score from residents increased to 6.71 (SD 1.25) on a 0 to 10 scale, over double an increase from the pre-workshop score on this item. Using a series of non-parametric Wilcoxon Matched Pairs Signed Rank Test procedures suitable for smaller samples, statistically significant increases in pre- to post-curriculum differences were shown for composite confidence scores (Z = 2.207, p = 0.027), as well as for five of the 12 individual confidence items (p-values ranged from 0.023 to 0.046).CONCLUSIONS: These initial results certainly indicate that a structured ongoing QIPS curriculum may have the potential to improve EM residents' confidence levels to design and implement QIPS projects with faculty. The impact of these types of curricula for EM and other types of residents needs to be more rigorously examined in more tightly controlled GME settings with larger samples to gauge what types of resident learners will more likely benefit from such educational offerings across the nation.

Abstract:Structured quality improvement and patient safety (QI/PS) education has increased at every level of medical education; however, great variability exists in the content taught. Here, the authors present a longitudinal model for medical student QI/PS education that is currently implemented at the University of Florida College of Medicine. The curriculum is taught with a variety of teaching methods incorporated into each year with increasing levels of clinical implementation. This curriculum is multimodal and introduces students to QI/PS concepts, presents mock scenarios, and eventually encourages clinical application to situations students experience during their own clinical practice. Additionally, a specialized track for students to have further immersion into this field of medicine is described, which involves specialized training, expanded educational opportunities, and a capstone project. Both the curriculum and specialized track contain explicit clinical integration to ensure students are prepared to enter the medical profession to engage in QI/PS endeavors.

Abstract:Bill Roberts (Figure (Figure11) was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 11, 1932, and he grew up there. In 1954, Bill graduated from Southern Methodist University (SMU) and in 1958, from Emory University School of Medicine. His internship was in internal medicine at the Boston City Hospital. After a 3-year residency in anatomic pathology at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, he was an assistant resident on the Osler Medical Service at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for a year and then a fellow in cardiology at the National Heart Institute in Bethesda for a year. From July 1964 until March 1993 he headed the Pathology Section or Branch of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. He has published just over 1400 articles, authored or edited 24 books, and lectured in >2000 cities (some several times) throughout the world. For 33 years, Dr. Roberts has been program director of the Williamsburg Conference on Heart Disease, held every December in Williamsburg, Virginia. He has contributed information on many cardiovascular conditions. Since March 1993, he has been executive director of the Baylor Heart and Vascular Institute of Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) in Dallas, Texas. Since 1994 he has been the editor in chief of BUMC Proceedings and dean of the A. Webb Roberts Center for Continuing Medical Education of Baylor Health Care System. He has been the editor in chief of The American Journal of Cardiology since June 1982 (25 years).

Abstract:Purpose: The learning health care system promotes development and application of evidence generated within the health care system to enhance the quality of patient care. The purpose of this study was to understand resident attitudes about quality improvement (QI) in Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Method: Four focus groups were conducted with 45 residents at the University of Utah School of Medicine during September and October 2014. Residents discussed the perceived value of QI and their experiences with QI. Qualitative analysis was conducted iteratively, resulting in a set of constructs that were then consolidated into overarching themes. Results: Five themes emerged from the qualitative analysis. Four of these represented QI participation barriers: challenges with understanding the vision of QI, confusion about basic aspects of QI, a sense that resident contributions to QI are not valued/valuable to the QI process, and challenges with prioritizing responsibilities relating to QI compared with other responsibilities. One theme represented a facilitator of successful QI: factors that make QI work successfully (e.g., clear goals and a sense of being on the "same page"). Conclusions: If resident attitudes about QI do not improve, the culture of the learning health care system is threatened. An important step in enhancing the perceived value of QI is resolving the perceived tension between providing excellent patient care and satisfying other goals. Involving residents more effectively in QI may result in improved attitudes and promote development of a better-functioning learning health care system.
Quality improvement education for medical students: a near-peer pilot study

Abstract:Abstract Background Quality improvement (QI) is an essential component of modern clinical practice. Front-line professionals offer valuable perspectives on areas for improvement and are motivated to deliver change. In the UK, all junior doctors are expected to participate in QI in order to advance to the next stage of their training. However, UK undergraduates receive no standardized training in QI methods. This is perpetuated within medical schools by a lack of teaching capacity and competing priorities, and may lead to tokenistic engagement with future QI projects. Methods We describe a near-peer teaching programme designed to introduce students to QI methods. This pilot study was conceived and delivered in full by junior doctors and used existing resources to ensure high quality teaching content. 111 fifth-year medical students from the University of Cambridge were taught in interactive, participative workshops that encourage them to develop their own QI change ideas and projects. Core topics included the model for improvement, driver diagrams, stakeholder engagement, measurement for improvement and analysing and presenting data. Students completed surveys before and immediately after this intervention to assess their understanding of and confidence in utilizing QI methods. Questionnaires were also completed by junior doctor tutors. Results Analysis of questionnaires completed before and immediately after the intervention revealed statistically significant improvements in students’ self-reported understanding of QI ( p < 0.05) and confidence in applying techniques to their own work (p < 0.05). Students expressed a preference for QI teaching delivered by junior doctors, citing a relaxed learning environment and greater relevance to their stage of training. Tutors reported increased confidence in using QI techniques and a greater willingness to engage with QI in future. Conclusions In this single-centre study, near-peer teaching produced significant improvements in students’ self-reported understanding of QI and confidence in applying QI methods. Near-peer teaching may constitute a sustainable means of teaching essential QI skills at undergraduate level. Future work must evaluate objective measures of student engagement with and competence in conducting QI.

Abstract:BackgroundTeaching clinical audit skills to nascent health professionals is one strategy to improve frontline care. The undergraduate medical curriculum at the University of Auckland provides improvement science theory and skills in Year 5 teaching, and the opportunity to put this into practice during an Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) clinical attachment in Year 6. In 2015, a revised medical school curriculum at the university resulted in a planned reduction of the O&G attachment from five weeks to four, necessitating revision of the Year 6 Quality Improvement (QI) project. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the revised programme provided an important experiential learning opportunity for medical students without imposing an unsustainable burden on clinical services.MethodsBased on a CIPP (Context/Input/Process/Product) evaluation model, the study was conducted in several stages to get a sense of the context as the new programme was being planned (Context evaluation), the feasibility of an alternative approach to meet the educational need (Input evaluation), the implementation of the revised programme (Process evaluation) and finally, the programme outcomes (Product evaluation). We used multiple data sources (supervisors, students, academic administrators, and hospital staff) and data collection methods (questionnaires, focus groups, individual interviews, consultative workshops, student reports and oral presentations).ResultsThe context evaluation revealed the Year 6 QI programme to be valuable and contributed to O&G service improvements, however, the following concerns were identified: time to complete the project, timely topic selection and access to data, recognition of student achievement, and staff workload. The evaluation of the revised QI project indicated improvement in student perceptions of their QI knowledge and skills, and most areas previously identified as challenging, despite the concurrent reduction in the duration of the O&G attachment.ConclusionsApplying the CIPP model for evaluation to our revised QI programme enabled streamlining of procedures to achieve greater efficiency without compromising the quality of the learning experience, or increasing pressure on staff. A four week clinical rotation is adequate for medical educators to consider opportunities for including QI projects as part of student experiential learning.

Near-peers improve patient safety training in the preclinical curriculum

Abstract:Background: Accrediting bodies require medical schools to teach patient safety and residents to develop teaching skills in patient safety. We created a patient safety course in the preclinical curriculum and used continuous quality improvement to make changes over time. Objective: To assess the impact of resident teaching on student perceptions of a Patient Safety course. Design: Using the Institute for Healthcare Improvement patient safety curriculum as a frame, the course included the seven IHI modules, large group lectures and small group facilitated discussions. Applying a social action methodology, we evaluated the course for four years (Y1-Y4). Results: In Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4, we distributed a course evaluation to each student (n = 184, 189, 191, and 184, respectively) and the response rate was 96, 97, 95 and 100%, respectively. Overall course quality, clarity of course goals and value of small group discussions increased in Y2 after the introduction of residents as small group facilitators. The value of residents and the overall value of the course increased in Y3 after we provided residents with small group facilitation training. Conclusions: Preclinical students value the interaction with residents and may perceive the overall value of a course to be improved based on near-peer involvement. Residents gain valuable experience in small group facilitation and leadership.
Creation of novel pediatric academic curriculum and its evaluation using mixed methods

Abstract:Introduction: The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education require resident skills in Evidence-Based Medicine and participation in research activities. Our first-year pediatric residents (PGY1s) were required to attend a novel, call-protected, 4-week Academic Skills and Knowledge (ASK) rotation to improve their skills as consumers of medical literature. Objectives of the study were to describe this curriculum and summarize its mixed-methods evaluation. Methods: After 14 months of curriculum development, three annual cohorts of PGY1s wrote identical pre- and post-ASK quizzes (2017-19). In 2018 and 2019, we assessed knowledge retention with PGY1s re-writing the quiz after 6 months. Mean test scores were compared using paired t-tests. In 2017, pre- and post-ASK focus groups assessed resident feelings about the rotation. Results: All eligible PGY1s (n=32) participated. Mean exam scores demonstrated increased knowledge (time0 mean plus/minus SD 52.6 plus/minus 11.0%; vs. time1 80.2 plus/minus 9.0%, p <0.001). Knowledge retention at 6 months was intermediate (time2 70.2 plus/minus12.0%; time0 vs time2 p<0.001). In the pre-rotation focus group, residents looked forward to ASK; goals centered around growing from learner to expert. Post-ASK, residents were very satisfied. Resident participation in our annual Research Institute poster competition increased linearly from 0% in 2014 to 8% in 2020 (r=0.74, p=0.01). Discussion: The ASK curriculum was successfully implemented, and increased knowledge persisted over time. Residents were satisfied with ASK and appreciated the structured curriculum building on core knowledge that they could immediately apply to their clinical work.
Curriculum Innovation: A Standardized Experiential Simulation Curriculum Equips Residents to Face the Challenges of Chief Year

Abstract:Introduction and problem statement: A chief resident's role incorporates administrative, academic, and interpersonal responsibilities essential to managing a successful residency program. However, rising chief residents receive little formal exposure to leadership training. Objectives: To (1) define leadership styles; (2) understand the effect of cultural competence on leadership styles; (3) learn effective methods to advocate as the chief resident; (4) provide effective peer feedback; (5) provide effective supervisor feedback; (6) learn effective conflict management; (7) ensure psychological safety. Methods and curriculum description: We developed a 1-day curriculum combining didactics and simulation activities for our program's rising chief residents. Implementation of our curricular design included a morning session focusing on small groups and didactic-based lectures on specific topics pertinent to leadership, along with a debriefing of a psychometric evaluation tool administered before the curriculum day. The simulation activity consisted of 3 group objective structured clinical examination (G-OSCE) scenarios: (1) providing a struggling junior trainee with feedback; (2) debriefing an adverse clinical outcome as the team leader; (3) navigating a challenging situation with a supervising physician. Standardized participants were surveyed for specific objectives. Learners completed precurricular and postcurricular surveys on their familiarity and preparedness for their chief year. Results and assessment data: Comparison of preintervention (n = 16) and postintervention (n = 10) data shows improvements in familiarity with leadership models (p = 0.006), cultural competence in leadership (p = 0.027), and team organizational structure (p = 0.010) with notable improvement in report of advocating for the team to 100% of participants in the postcurricular survey. In addition, although not statistically significant, familiarity with specific strategies for feedback delivery improved (p = 0.053), as did learner comfort levels with feedback delivery (comparing 51% of learners were either very or somewhat comfortable precurriculum to 90% postcurriculum). This is further supported by standardized participant data after the G-OSCEs. Although familiarity with wellness resources did improve across learners (p = 0.421), learner-reported use of wellness resources was noted to be reduced after the curricular intervention and remains a result of further interest for exploration. Discussion and lessons learned: A 1-day leadership development curriculum combining didactics and simulation is an effective means of preparing rising chief residents to succeed in their transition to this leadership role.
A Pilot Longitudinal Clinical Reasoning Curriculum for Pediatric Residents

Abstract:Introduction: Clinical reasoning (CR) is required for physicians. Pediatric residents often gain CR skills through experiential learning. Currently, deliberate education on CR targeted toward pediatric residents is inconsistent. Our objective was to implement a pilot CR curriculum, including five hour-long sessions, and evaluate its impact on self-identified CR Milestones and comfort with CR skills. Methods: We used Kern's six steps for curriculum development to develop our curriculum. Five morning report sessions included didactics and small-group activities. Pre/post surveys assessed resident self-identified level on ACGME Milestones related to CR skills (Patient Care 4 [PC4] and Medical Knowledge 2 [MK2]) and comfort with CR skills. The postsurvey assessed resident attitudes toward the sessions. Paired samples for Milestone and comfort-based questions were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed rank tests. Attitude questions were reported with descriptive statistics. Results: Each of the five curricular sessions was attended by 40-50 pediatric residents. Seventy-one trainees (58% of residency) and 51 trainees (42% of residency) completed the pre- and postsurveys, respectively, with 20 paired samples. Self-assessment of PC4 (p = .006) and resident comfort with all measured CR skills increased significantly. Of trainees who attended at least one session (n = 44), most reported finding the sessions helpful (97%), relevant to their clinical work (97%), and impactful on their clinical practice (73%). Discussion: Following exposure to this CR curriculum, pediatric residents reported increased self-identified competency levels on the evaluated Milestones and improved comfort with CR skills. Dedicated CR education may advance pediatric resident understanding of and comfort with CR.

Abstract:As part of a review of the undergraduate medical curriculum at King's College London, a module preparing students to undertake a quality improvement project (QIP) was developed. Using an illuminative evaluation method, the successes and challenges of the module were identified. The student experience lay along a continuum. At one end, QIPs enabled some significant improvements within trusts and primary care. Projects were presented in their clinical settings and at national and international conferences, and were published. At the other end of the continuum, students struggled to find an actionable project or have early and regular communication with their supervisors. Poor implementation of the module created challenges. These included misunderstanding of module requirements by students and supervisors, lack of clarity about what a feasible undergraduate project comprised and logistical problems when students moved from their QIP site to their next rotation. Travel back to the QIP site to complete projects involved missing scheduled teaching in their current rotation. Supervisors were unsure how to assess group projects. Key successes included students feeling better prepared to undertake QIPs, students developing a better understanding of the dynamics of clinical settings and teams, and how to manage these to progress projects.

Abstract:Objective: To create an interdisciplinary curriculum to teach key topics at the intersection of women's health, gender-affirming care, and health disparities to internal medicine (IM) residents. Materials and Methods: A core team of faculty from IM, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Surgery partnered with faculty and fellows from other disciplines and with community experts to design and deliver the curriculum. The resulting curriculum consisted of themed half-day modules, each consisting of three to four inter-related topics, updated and repeated on an ∼3-year cycle. Health equity was a focus of all topics. Module delivery used diverse interactive learning strategies. Modules have been presented to ∼175 residents annually, beginning in 2015. To assess the curriculum, we used formative evaluation methods, using primarily anonymous, electronic surveys, and collected quantitative and qualitative data. Most surveys assessed resident learning by quantifying residents' self-reported comfort with skills taught in the module pre- and postsession. Results: Of 131 residents who completed an evaluation in 2022/23, 121 (90%) "somewhat" or "strongly" agreed with their readiness to perform a range of skills taught in the module. In all previous years where pre- and postsurveys were used to evaluate modules, we observed a consistent meaningful increase in the proportion of residents reporting high levels of comfort with the material. Residents particularly valued interactive teaching methods, and direct learning from community members and peers. Conclusion: Our interdisciplinary curriculum was feasible, valued by trainees, and increased resident learning. The curriculum provides a template to address equity issues across a spectrum of women's and gender-affirming care conditions that can be used by other institutions in implementing similar curricula.

Abstract:Objective. To assess the current state of quality improvement and patient safety (QIPS) education at a large teaching hospital. Methods. We surveyed 429 trainees (138 residents, 291 clinical fellows) and 38 program directors (PDs; 2 were PDs of >1 program) from 39 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education–accredited training programs. Results. Twenty-nine PDs (76.3%) and 259 trainees (60.3%) responded. Most trainees (68.8%) reported participation in projects culminating in scholarly products (39.9%) or clinical innovations (44%). Most PDs reported that teaching (88.9%) and project supervision (83.3%) are performed by expert faculty. Nearly half of the PDs (45.8%) and trainees (49.6%) perceived project-based learning to be of equal value to formal curricula. Compared with trainees, a greater proportion of PDs reported needs for funding for projects, teaching faculty to provide mentorship, and faculty development ( P < .05). Conclusions. Providing additional financial, administrative, and operational support could enhance the value of curricula and projects. Developing expert teaching faculty is paramount.
