Abstract:Investigating the spatiotemporal ecology of elasmobranchs is an important precursor to their effective management. Understanding long-term patterns in the movement and habitat use of threatened species can improve management plans so that they yield increased conservation benefits. We investigated the spatiotemporal and environmental drivers that underpin the abundance and distribution of elasmobranchs around reef habitats in southern Mozambique to highlight reefs that are important ("hotspots") to the regional elasmobranch community. Visual belt transects ( n = 738), supported by video recordings, were completed on 16 reef sites off the coast of southern Mozambique from 2018 to 2022. Nine elasmobranch species were encountered annually ( Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos, Triaenodon obesus, Stegostoma tigrinum, Neotrygon caeruleopunctata, Pateobatis jenkinsii, Taeniurops meyeni, Mobula kuhlii, Mobula alfredi, Mobula birostris ) and 11 individual environmental and spatiotemporal parameters (horizontal water visibility, tidal range and state, moon illumination, temperature on the reef, cloud cover, time of day, day of the year, transect distance from shore, transect depth, and the region that the transect occurred in) were measured. All species, (bar P. jenkinsii ) were significantly more abundant around certain reefs in the sampled region. Total counts for most species were highest in the austral summer however two species' ( M. birostris and S. tigrinum ) were most abundant in the winter months. The tidal state, tidal range, and moon illumination correlated significantly with the numbers of each of the nine elasmobranch species. Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) indicated that species' responses to the measured parameters grouped taxonomically. Environmental influences resulted in strong seasonal patterns of reef use by large-bodied and pelagic elasmobranch species (e.g. manta rays). The measured environmental parameters also resulted in daily, monthly, and seasonal patterns of abundance of reef-resident stingray and shark species. Banning extraction of elasmobranch species around the reefs where they aggregate and reflecting species distributions within fisheries regulations may significantly benefit the regional elasmobranch community.

Abstract:Balanced ecosystems benefit meso and top predators, which help to maintain the quality of the habitat. Thus, the presence of sharks can be considered an indicator of environmental health. Baited remote underwater stereo-videos (BRUVs) were used to assess the relative abundance of sharks in the Alcatrazes Archipelago, Southwestern Atlantic, after an important no-take zone expansion from 12 to 675 km 2 with the creation of the Wildlife Refuge and enhanced enforcement, comparing our findings with previous BRUV surveys. This study observed sharks in 16 (10.7%) of the 150 stereo-BRUV deployments and recorded seven species ( Squalus cf. albicaudus , Carcharias taurus , Carcharhinus plumbeus , Carcharhinus falciformis , Rhizoprionodon porosus , Sphyrna lewini , and Sphyrna zygaena ). These data, combined with the perception of frequent and experienced divers (management staff and diving operators) about the increase in shark sightings, suggest a recent positive effect of the no-take zone for these predators and a healthier ecosystem. Results also show that long-term monitoring and effective enforcement of the Alcatrazes Wildlife Refuge are crucial to maintain and enhance the positive effects in the area.

Abstract:Concurrently, assessing the effectiveness of marine protected areas and evaluating the degree of risk from humans to key species provide valuable information that can be integrated into conservation management planning. Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) are a wide‐ranging ecologically important species subject to various threats. The aim of this study was to identify “hotspots” of tiger shark habitat use in relation to protected areas and potential risks from fishing. Southwest Indian Ocean, east coast of South Africa and Mozambique. Satellite tags were fitted to 26 tiger sharks. A subset of 19 sharks with an average period at liberty of 197 (SD = 110) days were analysed using hotspot analysis to identify areas of core habitat use. The spatial and temporal overlap of significant hotspots with current and planned marine protected areas as well as risks from fishing and culling was then calculated. There was a 5.97% spatial overlap between tiger shark hotspots and marine protected areas, which would increase significantly (p < .05) to 24.36% with the expansion of planned protected areas in South Africa and could be as high as 41.43% if Mozambique similarly expanded neighbouring protected area boundaries. Tiger sharks remained largely coastal, but only showed a spatial overlap of 5.12% with shark culling nets in South Africa. Only three sharks undertook open ocean migrations during which they were more likely to interact with longline fisheries in the region. This study demonstrates how spatial information can be used to assess the overlap between marine protected areas and the core habitats of top marine predators and highlights how congruent transnational conservation management can improve the effectiveness of protected areas. Core habitat use of marine apex predators may also be indicative of productive habitats, and therefore, predators such as tiger sharks could act as surrogate species for identifying key habitats to prioritize for conservation planning.

Abstract:Sharks have declined worldwide and remote sanctuaries are becoming crucial for shark conservation. The southwest Indian Ocean is a hotspot of both terrestrial and marine biodiversity mostly impacted by anthropogenic damage. Sharks were observed during surveys performed from April to June 2013 in the virtually pristine coral reefs around Europa Island, a remote Marine Protected Area located in the southern Mozambique Channel. Observation events comprised 67 1-hour scientific dives between 5 - 35m depth and 7 snorkeling inspections, as well as 4 dinghy-based observations in the shallow lagoon. In a period of 24 days, 475 sharks were tallied. Carcharhinus galapagensis was most encountered and contributed 20% of the abundance during diving, followed by C. albimarginatus (10%). Both species were more abundant between 11-14h, and on the exposed sides of the island. Numbers of Sphyrna lewini were highest with 370 individuals windward and leeward, mostly schooling. S. lewini aggregations in the area are hypothesized to be attracted to the seamount archipelago offering favorable conditions for deep incursions and of which Europa Island forms part. C. amblyrhynchos, Galeocerdo cuvier and S. mokarran were uncommon, while there was an additional observation of Rhincodon typus. The lagoon of Europa was a nursery ground for C. melanopterus where it was the only species present. A total of 8 species was recorded, contributing to the shark diversity of 15 species reported from Europa since 1952 in the scientific and gray literature. Overall, with the occurrence of several species of apex predators in addition to that of R. typus, large schools of S. lewini, fair numbers of reef sharks and a nursery of C. melanopterus, Europa's sharks constitute a significant reservoir of biodiversity, which contributes to preserve the functioning of the ecosystem. Our observations highlight the relevance of Europa Island for shark conservation and the need for shark-targeted management in the EEZ of both Europa and Bassas da India.
Remote reefs and seamounts are the last refuges for marine predators across the Indo-Pacific

Abstract:Since the 1950s, industrial fisheries have expanded globally, as fishing vessels are required to travel further afield for fishing opportunities. Technological advancements and fishery subsidies have granted ever-increasing access to populations of sharks, tunas, billfishes, and other predators. Wilderness refuges, defined here as areas beyond the detectable range of human influence, are therefore increasingly rare. In order to achieve marine resources sustainability, large no-take marine protected areas (MPAs) with pelagic components are being implemented. However, such conservation efforts require knowledge of the critical habitats for predators, both across shallow reefs and the deeper ocean. Here, we fill this gap in knowledge across the Indo-Pacific by using 1,041 midwater baited videos to survey sharks and other pelagic predators such as rainbow runner (Elagatis bipinnulata), mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus), and black marlin (Istiompax indica). We modeled three key predator community attributes: vertebrate species richness, mean maximum body size, and shark abundance as a function of geomorphology, environmental conditions, and human pressures. All attributes were primarily driven by geomorphology (35%-62% variance explained) and environmental conditions (14%-49%). While human pressures had no influence on species richness, both body size and shark abundance responded strongly to distance to human markets (12%-20%). Refuges were identified at more than 1,250 km from human markets for body size and for shark abundance. These refuges were identified as remote and shallow seabed features, such as seamounts, submerged banks, and reefs. Worryingly, hotpots of large individuals and of shark abundance are presently under-represented within no-take MPAs that aim to effectively protect marine predators, such as the British Indian Ocean Territory. Population recovery of predators is unlikely to occur without strategic placement and effective enforcement of large no-take MPAs in both coastal and remote locations.
Identifying spatial movements and residency of pelagic thresher sharks (Alopias pelagicus) using satellite and passive acoustic telemetry to inform local conservation in central Indonesia

Abstract:The pelagic thresher shark ( Alopias pelagicus ) is globally endangered, threatened by bycatch, and targeted in industrial and artisanal fisheries in Indonesia. However, a lack of information about their ecology, particularly movement and habitat use, hinders the development of science-based conservation measures to protect the species. Here, we report our research, which is the first to use a combination of satellite and passive acoustic telemetry to investigate the movement and residency of the pelagic thresher shark within Indonesia's waters, especially in areas impacted by local fisheries. A total of 24 sharks were tagged with archival satellite tags ( n = 9), internal acoustic tags ( n = 10), and both tags ( n = 5) in Selat Pantar Marine Protected Area (MPA). The tagged sharks, dominated by females (71%) ranged in size from 125–180 cm FL (mean ± SD: 161 ± 13). Seven of the fifteen acoustically tagged sharks were detected by the receivers, while twelve of the fourteen satellite tags reported data. The satellite tags stayed attached for 81–181 days, and the acoustic tag detection periods ranged from 44–175 days. Horizontally, we found the satellite-tagged sharks moved broadly, mainly offshore, approximately 90 km from tagging locations. They moved to areas between Banda, Flores, and Savu Sea regions, where unregulated and unreported longline and gillnet fisheries are known to operate. Meanwhile, the acoustically tagged sharks showed distinct diel patterns around the Selat Pantar MPA's coastal waters, indicating potential philopatric behavior. Vertically, the sharks spent significantly ( p < 0.001) more time in deeper water during the day and moved to shallower water at night. The deepest dive recorded was 1,889.5 m, which is the deepest ever recorded from the species. Our results suggest that area-based protection can be an effective nearshore conservation tool as individuals appear to remain in relatively restricted areas within Selat Pantar MPA for extended periods. However, fisheries regulation aimed at restricting illegal longline and gillnet fishing is also necessary to protect sharks when they move offshore. Our findings have been communicated to the relevant governments, resulting in increased political will and new legislation to protect them within the Selat Pantar MPA and connected waters of East Nusa Tenggara.
Estimating Space Use of Mobile Fishes in a Large Marine Protected Area With Methodological Considerations in Acoustic Array Design

Abstract:Marine protected areas (MPAs) have become an increasingly important tool to protect and conserve marine resources. However, there remains much debate about how effective MPAs are, especially in terms of their ability to protect mobile marine species such as teleost and chondrichthyan fishes. We used satellite and acoustic tags to assess the ability of a large oceanic MPA, the British Indian Ocean Territory MPA (BIOT MPA), to protect seven species of pelagic and reef-associated teleost and chondrichthyan fishes. We satellite-tagged 26 animals from six species (Blue Marlin, Reef Mantas, Sailfish, Silky Sharks, Silvertip Sharks, and Yellowfin Tuna), producing 2,735 days of movement data. We also acoustically tagged 121 sharks from two species (Grey Reef and Silvertip Sharks), which were monitored for up to 40 months across a large acoustic receiver array spanning the MPA. We found that the activity spaces of all satellite-tagged animals, including pelagic species, were much smaller than the area of the BIOT MPA, even taking into account errors associated with position estimates. Estimates of space use of acoustically tagged sharks, based on dynamic Brownian Bridge Movement Models (dBBMM), were also much smaller than the size of the MPA. However, we found important limitations when using dBBMM and demonstrate its sensitivity to both study duration and array design. We found that Grey Reef Sharks should be monitored for at least 1 year and Silvertip Sharks for 2 years before their activity space can be effectively estimated. We also demonstrate the potentially important role that intraspecific variability in spatial ecology may play in influencing the ability of MPAs to effectively protect populations of mobile species. Overall, our results suggest that, with effective enforcement, MPAs on the scale of the BIOT MPA potentially offer protection to a variety of pelagic and reef species with a range of spatial ecologies. We suggest that animals need to be tagged across seasons, years, and ontogenetic stages, in order to fully characterize their spatial ecology, which is fundamental to developing and implementing effective MPAs to conserve the full life history of target species.

Abstract:The Chagos Archipelago's vast no‐take marine protected area (MPA, 640,000 km2) provides refuge for elasmobranchs facing unsustainable depletion by fisheries. Nonetheless, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing poses a substantial threat, and potential future changes to the use of the MPA could render elasmobranchs increasingly vulnerable to exploitation, putting geographically isolated populations, such as reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) at risk of local extinction. Therefore, the species' long‐term movements and habitat use must be identified to help prioritize current enforcement activity and inform future spatial planning. Passive acoustic telemetry and modelled environmental data were used to investigate variations in 42 tagged M. alfredi utilization of a meso‐scale aggregation hotspot, Egmont Atoll, between 2019 and 2022. Mobula alfredi displayed the highest levels of residency ever reported (77%), with prolonged absences (>2 months) limited to seven individuals. Egmont atoll was used year‐round, with activity peaks during the southeast monsoon (April – November), particularly at sites on the southwest, while sites on the northwest were predominately frequented in the northwest monsoon (December–March). Tags were most likely to be detected when the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) was in a positive phase with a greater mixed layer depth, associated with a depression of chlorophyll α levels in the Indian Ocean. Thus, M. alfredi may be particularly reliant on Egmont Atoll, where they are predominantly observed feeding, when prey resources are limited elsewhere. In a region where the threat of fisheries is of increasing concern, the identification of crucial M. alfredi habitats is essential for conservation management planning. Given the significant role of Egmont Atoll for the local population, regular IUU enforcement patrols are crucial, particularly during the southeast monsoon. Any future changes to the MPA should prioritize preserving and actively enforcing no‐take regulations at Egmont Atoll.

The study of shark and ray abundance in Nusa Penida Aquatic Conservation Area

Abstract:Limited information is one of major problem in managing shark and ray population in Indonesia. This research aims to demonstrate a cost-effective video approach to quantify the relative abundance of sharks, rays and other megafaunas (morays, turtles and sea snakes) in no-take and open access zones of Nusa Penida Aquatic Conservation Area. Using 116 deployments of baited remote underwater video systems (BRUVs) that deployed in March 2016, we found 162 individual sharks, rays and another megafauna. Three shark species from three families were identified: blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus, n=2), bigeye thresher shark (Alopias superciliosus, n=1) and bamboo shark (Chiloscyllium punctatum, n=10). Bamboo shark are known to have low valueto shark fisher. Five species of rays from 2 families were recorded: blue-spotted mask ray (Neotrygon kuhlii, n=12), mangrove whip ray (Himantura granulata, n=8), blue-spotted ribbon-tail ray (Taeniura lymma, n=4), blotched fantail ray (Taeniurops meyeni, n=2) and manta ray (Manta spp, n=6). We found that the zoning of the Aquatic Conservation Area had no effect on shark abundance. However, shark abundance was different between sites (East and West Nusa Penida). Numbers of lower order predators such as bamboo sharks, stingrays and morays were relatively high, potentially due to the absence of larger sharks. Rays had greater abundance at sites with low current and in deeper water, while morays, turtles and sea snakes varied across site and current intensity. Redefining zoning needed to improve benefits of spatial closure on conserving sharks, rays and another megafaunas population.

Abstract:Fisher-shark conflict is occurring at Lord Howe Island, Australia due to high levels of Galapagos shark ( Carcharhinus galapagensis ) depredation (where sharks consume hooked fish) and bycatch. Depredation causes costly loss of target catch and fishing gear and increased mortality of target species, and sharks can be injured or killed when bycaught. This study applied acoustic telemetry and vessel tracking from 2018 to 2021 to identify; (1) how the movements of 30 tagged sharks and activity of six fishing vessels overlapped, and (2) where key 'hotspots' of overlap occurred. Fisher surveys were also conducted to collect information about mitigating shark interactions. Residency index analysis indicated that three sharks tagged at a fish waste dumping site had markedly higher residency. Core home ranges of sharks overlapped with higher fishing activity at four 'hotspots'. Statistical modelling indicated positive linear effects of fishing activity and bathymetric complexity on shark detections and tagged sharks were present for 13% of the total time that vessels were fishing close to acoustic receivers. Spatio-temporal overlaps between shark movements and fishing activity could potentially have occurred because sharks learned to associate fishing vessels with food (i.e. hooked fish) and because fishers and sharks utilise highly productive shelf edge areas, however more research is needed to investigate these relationships. Fishers reported that rotating fishing areas and reducing time at each location, fishing deeper than 100 m, and using electric reels and lures instead of bait, reduced bycatch and depredation. The integrated approach used here identified practical methods for reducing fisher-shark conflict, improving socio-economic outcomes for fishers and conservation prospects for this unique shark population.

Small marine reserves provide conservation benefits for coastal sharks in southern New Zealand

Abstract:With the increasingly imperilled status of shark populations, there is a pressing need to evaluate management solutions. Given the threats posed by fishing, marine reserves (MRs) present a promising option. Ata Whenua (Fiordland) in the South Island of Aotearoa/New Zealand is an ideal location to investigate this phenomenon owing to the presence of several shark species in coastal MRs. One‐hundred and sixty‐seven baited remote underwater video deployments were made in five MRs. A multi‐model inference approach using generalized linear modelling was used to assess the combined effect of the MRs on two trophic groups of coastal sharks. Generalized linear modelling was used to assess the effect of protection on, firstly, the presence of broadnose sevengill sharks (Notorynchus cepedianus), while accounting for variations in environmental variables, and secondly, the combined relative abundance of mesopredatory sharks detected (spiny dogfish, Squalus acanthias; school shark, Galeorhinus galeus; and carpet shark, Cephaloscyllium isabellum). Mesopredators had a higher relative abundance in MRs by a factor of 2.5 and there was a strong significant effect of protection, suggesting that MRs have led to an increase in their abundance or a change in distribution. In contrast, there was no effect of protection detected for sevengill sharks. It is concluded that the relatively small (<40 km2) MRs sampled do not provide conservation benefits for a large, mobile shark, but that they are potentially large enough to offer protection for mesopredatory sharks with smaller home ranges. To be effective for shark conservation, we therefore recommend that MRs need to be appropriately sized for the ranging behaviour of the target species for protection.

Abstract:Abstract Quantifying the drivers of population size in reef sharks is critical for the development of appropriate conservation strategies. In north-west Australia, shark populations inhabit coral reefs that border growing centres of human population, industry, and tourism. However, we lack baseline data on reef sharks at large spatial scales (hundreds of km) that might enable managers to assess the status of shark populations in the face of future development in this region. Here, we examined the occurrence, abundance and behaviour of apex ( Galeocerdo cuvier, Carcharhinus plumbeus ) and reef ( C. amblyrhynchos, C. melanopterus, Triaenodon obesus ) sharks using > 1200 deployments of baited remote underwater stereo-video systems (stereo-BRUVs) across > 500 km of coastline. We found evidence for species-specific influences of habitat and fishing activities on the occurrence (probability of observation), abundance (MaxN) and behaviour of sharks (time of arrival to the stereo-BRUVs and likelihood of feeding). Although the presence of management zoning (No-take areas) made little difference to most species , C. amblyrhynchos were more common further from boat ramps (a proxy of recreational fishing pressure). Time of arrival for all species was also influenced by distance to boat ramp, although patterns varied among species. Our results demonstrate the capacity for behavioural metrics to complement existing measures of occurrence and abundance in assessing the potential impact of human activities on shark populations.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of the United States Commercial Fishing Industry Vessel Safety Act of 1988 in reducing the high occupational death rate (200/100,000/year in 1991-2) among Alaska's commercial fishermen. METHODS: Comprehensive surveillance of deaths in commercial fishing was established by our office during 1991 and 1992 for Alaska. Demographic data and data on risk factors and incidents were compiled and analysed for trend. RESULTS: During 1991-8, there was a significant (p < 0.001) decrease in deaths in Alaska related to commercial fishing. Although drownings from fishermen falling overboard and events related to crab fishing vessels (often conducted far offshore and in winter) have continued to occur, marked progress (significant downward trend, p < 0.001) has been made in saving the lives of people involved in vessels capsizing and sinking. CONCLUSIONS: Specific measures tailored to prevent drowning associated with vessels capsizing and sinking in Alaska's commercial fishing industry have been successful. However, these events continue to occur, and place fishermen and rescue personnel at substantial risk. Additional strategies must be identified to reduce the frequency of vessels capsizing and sinking, to enable parallel improvements in the mortality among crab fishermen, and to prevent fishermen falling overboard and drownings associated with them.
A decade of submersible observations revealed temporal trends in elasmobranchs in a remote island of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean

Abstract:No-take marine protected areas (MPAs) can mitigate the effects of overfishing, climate change and habitat degradation, which are leading causes of an unprecedented global biodiversity crisis. However, assessing the effectiveness of MPAs, especially in remote oceanic islands, can be logistically challenging and often restricted to relatively shallow and accessible environments. Here, we used a long-term dataset (2010–2019) collected by the DeepSee submersible of the Undersea Hunter Group that operates in Isla del Coco National Park, Costa Rica, to (1) determine the frequency of occurrence of elasmobranch species at two depth intervals (50–100 m; 300–400 m), and (2) investigate temporal trends in the occurrence of common elasmobranch species between 2010 and 2019, as well as potential drivers of the observed changes. Overall, we observed 17 elasmobranch species, 15 of which were recorded on shallow dives (50–100 m) and 11 on deep dives (300–400 m). We found a decreasing trend in the probability of occurrence of Carcharhinus falciformis over time (2010–2019), while other species (e.g. Taeniurops meyeni , Sphyrna lewini , Carcharhinus galapagensis , Triaenodon obesus , and Galeocerdo cuvier ) showed an increasing trend. Our study suggests that some species like S. lewini may be shifting their distributions towards deeper waters in response to ocean warming but may also be sensitive to low oxygen levels at greater depths. These findings highlight the need for regional 3D environmental information and long-term deepwater surveys to understand the extent of shark and ray population declines in the ETP and other regions, as most fishery-independent surveys from data-poor countries have been limited to relatively shallow waters.

Abstract:The African blackspot shark Carcharhinus humani (until now commonly known as Human's whaler shark) is a small-sized requiem shark (family Carcharhinidae) found in tropical coastal waters of the western Indian Ocean as far south as Port St Johns on the east coast of South Africa. It was only recently recognised as being distinct from the blackspot shark C. sealei , which occurs elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific. This study utilised four datasets to investigate the movements, temporal and geographic distributions, life history and population status of this species in South African waters. The recapture of eight individuals of 294 that were tagged by shore anglers revealed an average distance moved of 33 km (range 1–192 km). Competitive shore anglers caught an average of 39 C. humani per annum along the entire KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coast, with no marked trend in catch rate over time. Catches in the KZN bather protection programme were extremely low but included 30 pregnant females which displayed a highly seasonal pattern of embryo development. Sightings of C. humani on stereo baited remote underwater video systems (stereo-BRUVS) in the iSimangaliso Marine Protected Area were dominated by females (7.7:1) and were mostly in deeper water of 26–35 m. In all datasets most of the individuals were mature and were present year-round, but with a clear peak in summer and autumn, especially in the catches taken by shore anglers. Competitive shore-angling catch data were used to conduct a risk assessment for the South African population, and, based on values of probability of encounter, the sampled population satisfies the IUCN Red List criteria for Least Concern.

Abstract:No-take marine protected areas (MPAs) are a commonly applied tool to reduce human fishing impacts on marine and coastal ecosystems. However, conservation outcomes of MPAs for mobile and long-lived predators such as sharks are highly variable. Here, we use empirical animal tracking data from 459 individual sharks and baited remote underwater video surveys undertaken in 36 countries to construct an empirically supported individual-based model that estimates the conservation effectiveness of MPAs for five species of coral reef-associated sharks (Triaenodon obesus, Carcharhinus melanopterus, Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos, Carcharhinus perezi, and Ginglymostoma cirratum). We demonstrate how species-specific individual movement traits can contribute to fishing mortality of sharks found within MPAs as they move outside to adjacent fishing grounds. We discovered that the world's officially recorded coral reef-based managed areas (with a median width of 9.4 km) would need to be enforced as strict no-take MPAs and up to 5 times larger to expect protection of the majority of individuals of the five investigated reef shark species. The magnitude of this effect depended on local abundances and fishing pressure, with MPAs required to be 1.6–2.6 times larger to protect the same number of Atlantic and Caribbean species, which occur at lower abundances than similar species in the western Pacific. Furthermore, our model was used to quantify partially substantial reductions (>50%) in fishing mortality resulting from small increases in MPA size, allowing us to bridge a critical gap between traditional conservation planning and fisheries management. Overall, our results highlight the challenge of relying on abundance data alone to ensure that estimates of shark conservation impacts of MPAs follow the precautionary approach.

Abstract:Abstract An increasing onus on elasmobranch management by regional bodies has been hindered by a lack of data on abundance, distribution and fisheries, especially in data‐poor areas like the eastern Atlantic Ocean. From 2015 through 2017, 204 baited remote underwater videos (BRUV) were deployed in Cabo Verde around the eastern islands of Sal, Boavista and Maio and the remote offshore reef João Valente to establish a baseline of elasmobranch abundance. Over 200 hours of footage revealed 215 individual elasmobranchs, spanning 14 species from 6 taxonomic families. The abundance of elasmobranchs was highest in Maio, the island with the smallest human population, followed by Boavista and Sal. Smaller‐bodied meso‐predatory species such as the common smoothhound ( Mustelus mustelus ) and the Atlantic weasel shark ( Paragaleus pectoralis ) constituted the majority of observations in Maio and Boavista. Inversely, Carcharhinus spp. were observed in considerably greater abundance in Sal, and there was notably lower abundance of small‐bodied sharks at sites with high large‐bodied Carcharhinid abundance. Species richness was consistent with abundance estimates across islands, with Boavista and Sal recording the highest species diversity, followed by Maio. Results suggest that amongst Cabo Verde's eastern islands, there exists a high relative diversity and abundance of coastal elasmobranchs compared to populations in West Africa. Nonetheless, there is evidence of exploitation of higher trophic levels species. This trend is most notable in the decreasing abundance of Carcharhinids with increasing proximity to the capital city Praia, suggesting that fishing efforts from the capital are negatively affecting the abundance of large‐bodied, higher‐trophic predators.

Abstract:<ol class=""><li>Animal movement has direct applications in spatial management and conservation planning, yet it is rarely taken into account for the design of natural protected areas. For instance, reef shark species are thought to benefit from marine protected area networks, even though their movement behaviour remains poorly characterized. Poor understanding of species' movements implies that the benefits of MPA networks for species' populations are still widely unknown.</li><li>To understand the consequences of movement behaviour for protection, we modelled movements of three reef shark species' (Carcharhinus albimarginatus , C. amblyrhynchos and C. leucas ) with distinct levels of reef association using real passive‐acoustic telemetry data. The model simulates if individuals are protected or unprotected by their movements in a system of reef patches in a network of MPAs. Model parameters that control individuals' movements were estimated from acoustic telemetry data. To estimate benefits for species we monitored longevity and time spent in protected habitats across all scenarios of reef protection, fishing intensity (11 values for each) and protection of high or low suitability reefs (a reef‐dependent factor that attracts sharks to reside in it) for populations of 1,000 individuals per species. </li><li>The time individuals spent in protected reefs increased linearly with protection until it levelled off after 50%–80% of reefs protected (78% C. amblyrhynchos , 72% C. albimarginatus and 52% C. leucas , at 100% protection). Individuals' life span decreased exponentially with fishing intensity. Reef protection only mildly counteracted life span lost to fishing. Protecting highly suitable reefs increased time spent in protected reefs, optimal protection was reached at a lower number of reefs protected, and life expectancy was higher with protection of highly suitable reefs. </li><li>Synthesis and applications . Our framework can be applied to many studies using passive‐acoustic telemetry to track animal movements. Protected area networks benefit species highly attached to protected sites. To increase benefits of marine protected area networks for all species (with low and high degrees of reef attachment) we need to understand the use of reef‐adjacent areas, dispersal routes and characterize reef suitability for multiple species. </li></ol>

Abstract:Bonnethead and Caribbean sharpnose sharks frequent coastal waters, rendering them vulnerable to overexploitation, with the bonnethead shark listed as endangered by the IUCN. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have been suggested as a management strategy to regulate shark-exploitation. Moreover, it's essential to identify key areas where nursery grounds (NG) and adult habitats overlap to prioritize conservation zones within MPAs. Along the Caribbean Sea, several NG have been identified for larger shark species, but little is known for smaller sharks. In Bocas del Toro (BDT-Panamanian Caribbean), both bonnethead and Caribbean sharpnose sharks are distributed, with the former appearing to be genetically isolated. The local MPA in BDT doesn't include a NG identified near Solarte Island. In this study, to provide ecological information on bonnethead and Caribbean sharpnose sharks within this potential NG, we evaluated stable isotopes ( δ 13 C and δ 15 N) and total-mercury (THg) values in their fins. The results revealed a higher proportion of small-adult sharks in the NG, emphasizing the necessity of conducting a comprehensive study to further characterize this area. Moreover, there was no niche-partitioning between the two species and their diets primarily consisted of small prey-items, as evidenced by the significant and negative relationship between isotopic values. Both species exhibited low THg levels in their fins. Based on these initial results and previous genetic data, it appears that BDT plays a critical role as a habitat for sharks. Thus, extending the local MPA to cover the potential NG could effectively ensure conservation of bonnethead and Caribbean sharpnose sharks in BDT.
