Abstract:Honeybee comb architecture and the manner of its construction have long been the subject of scientific curiosity. Comb is characterised by an even hexagonal layout and the sharing of cell bases and side walls, which provides maximised storage volume while requiring minimal wax. The efficiency of this structure relies on a regular layout and the correct positioning of cells relative to each other, with each new cell placed at the junction of two previously constructed cells. This task is complicated by the incomplete nature of cells at the edge of comb, where new cells are to be built. We presented bees with wax stimuli comprising shallow depressions and protuberances in simulation of features found within partially formed comb, and demonstrated that construction work by honeybee builders was influenced by these stimuli. The building of new cells was aligned to concave stimuli that simulated the clefts that naturally appear between two partially formed cells, revealing how new cells may be aligned to ensure proper tessellation within comb. We also found that bees built cell walls in response to edges formed by our stimuli, suggesting that cell and wall construction was specifically directed towards the locations necessary for continuation of hexagonal comb.

Abstract:Foraging is one of the most complicated behaviors of honeybees.It includes information evaluation,information transfer,learning and memory,energy metabolism and different foraging processes.Research on the molecular mechanism underlying bee foraging and communication will not only be conducive to theoretical study and the development of the bee industry,but may also provide insights into human language and information exchange systems.This article reviews progress in research on honey bee foraging behavior at the behavioral,sensory and molecular levels,and proposes ideas for new research that could provide a sound basis for the in-depth study of foraging and communicative behavior.

Abstract:Self-organization of comb building behaviour is an instinct of honeybees. Here we report a case in which honeybee workers show a disorder in comb building behaviour, which results in some workers becoming embedded in newly constructed combs during comb construction. This observation is a prime example how simple signals and cues can trigger a behaviour, even when it is obviously a mistake to start comb building while the wax is still at another worker’s body.

Abstract:We report that the cells in a natural honeybee comb have a circular shape at 'birth' but quickly transform into the familiar rounded hexagonal shape, while the comb is being built. The mechanism for this transformation is the flow of molten visco-elastic wax near the triple junction between the neighbouring circular cells. The flow may be unconstrained or constrained by the unmolten wax away from the junction. The heat for melting the wax is provided by the 'hot' worker bees.

Abstract:We reveal the sophisticated and hierarchical structure of honeybee combs and measure the elastic properties of fresh and old natural honeycombs at different scales by optical microscope, environmental scanning electron microscope, nano/microindentation, and by tension and shear tests. We demonstrate that the comb walls are continuously strengthened and stiffened without becoming fragile by the addition of thin wax layers reinforced by recycled silk cocoons reminiscent of modern fiber-reinforced composite laminates. This is done to increase its margin of safety against collapse due to a temperature increase. Artificial engineering honeycombs mimic only the macroscopic geometry of natural honeycombs, but have yet to achieve the microstructural sophistication of their natural counterparts. The natural honeycombs serve as a prototype of truly biomimetic cellular materials with hitherto unattainable improvement in stiffness, strength, toughness, and thermal stability.
Investigation into quasi-static compressive behaviors of several kinds of honeycomb like structures in three axial directions

Abstract:The natural bees' honeycombs maintain long-term structural stability in harsh environments, employing a highly material-efficient approach. However, the reasons remain somewhat ambiguous. To clarify the stabilization mechanism and investigate quasi-static compression responses of double-layer ordered cellular structures, honeycomb, Tóth and single-layer cellular structures with a relative density ( ρ r ) of 25.84% were fabricated using 3D printing technology. Then, quasi-static compression experiments in three directions were conducted. Further, a numerical study was conducted to uncover the stabilization mechanism and effect of ρ r on compressive behaviors. Results revealed that the stabilization mechanism was mainly attributed to bearing load priority of intermediate layer and its inhibition on formation of plastic hinges. A relative density of 5.17% served as a transition point for deformation mode, beyond which honeycomb and Tóth structures exhibited stronger in-plane compressive strength at expense of less sacrificed out-of-plane compressive strength, below which they both exhibited more stable compressive curves compared to single-layer cellular structures, which were favorable for energy absorption. This study clarifies the stability mechanism of bees' honeycombs and addresses the lack on compression behaviors of double-layer ordered cellular structures. Moreover, it introduces two available bionic structures with controllable deformation modes to expand the application of single-layer cellular structures.

Abstract:Many biological structures can perform highly-dexterous actions by using dynamic surfaces. To deal with the contradictive demands of high feeding efficiency and low energy expenditure during nectar feeding, the glossal surface of a honeybee undergoes shape changes, in which glossal hairs erect together with segment elongation in a drinking cycle. In this paper, we extracted a transmission link embedded in the glossa from postmortem examination and found that the compliance of the intersegmental membranes provides more possibilities for this highly kinematic synchronicity. According to the morphing phenomena of honeybee's glossa, we proposed a compliant mechanism model to predict the deformation behavior of honeybee considering elastic properties of the glossal intersegmental membranes. The increase of membrane stiffness may improve the capacity of elastic potential energy transfer, but will still result in the increase of mass. An index is introduced to evaluate the contradiction for optimizing structural parameters. This work may arouse new prospects for conceptual design of micro-mechanical systems equipped with bio-inspired compliant mechanisms.
The Combining Ability and Heterosis Analysis of Royal Jelly Yield and Quality Properties in Western Honeybees

Abstract:The NC II mating design of 2 x 4 was made in order to evaluate The combining ability and heterosis of royal jelly yield and quality properties that included royal jelly yield, royal jelly yield per cup, acceptance ratio and acidity in Apis mellifera. The results were as follows: (1) For all characters, general combining ability in six parents (GCA) achieved highly significant level (P < 0.01), special combining ability (SCA) only significant (P < 0.05), therefore the additive effect is more important for royal jelly yield and quality properties; (2) The GCA of A. m. acervorum in four characters was higher, and the SCA variance of A. m. carpatica, A. m. caucasica was greater, so they were good parents. ZND-1 Apis mellifera lingustica in royal jelly yield, royal jelly yield per cup, acceptance ratio was an excellent parent, but A. m. carnica only could be used in increasing royal jelly quality; (3) The heterosis over high-parent is negative, thus it is difficult to improve royal jelly yield and quality by cross breeding, but by appropriate choice of parents, high yield and quality combination can be obtained.

Abstract:In the beeswax combs of honey bees, the cells of brood, pollen, and honey have a consistent spatial pattern that is sustained throughout the life of a colony. This spatial pattern is believed to emerge from simple behavioral rules that specify how the queen moves, where foragers deposit honey/pollen and how honey/pollen is consumed from cells. Prior work has shown that a set of such rules can explain the formation of the allocation pattern starting from an empty comb. We show that these rules cannot maintain the pattern once the brood start to vacate their cells, and we propose new, biologically realistic rules that better sustain the observed allocation pattern. We analyze the three resulting models by performing hundreds of simulation runs over many gestational periods and a wide range of parameter values. We develop new metrics for pattern assessment and employ them in analyzing pattern retention over each simulation run. Applied to our simulation results, these metrics show alteration of an accepted model for honey/pollen consumption based on local information can stabilize the cell allocation pattern over time. We also show that adding global information, by biasing the queen's movements towards the center of the comb, expands the parameter regime over which pattern retention occurs.

Abstract:Animals navigating in three dimensions encounter different perspectives of their world, often transitioning from bird’s eye views at higher altitudes to frog’s-eye views closer to the ground. How they integrate this information to pinpoint a goal location is virtually unknown. Here we tested the ability of bumblebees to use both types of views when homing in a cluttered environment. Our combined modelling and experimental approach examined various views for goal location in cluttered settings. Whereas, bird’s-eye views performed best in simulations of current snapshot homing models, behavioural experiments revealed that bumblebees predominantly relied on frog’s eye views when pinpointing nest entrances in cluttered environments. These findings reveal the limitations of snapshot-homing models and suggest that bumblebees use a combination of navigational tools to successfully find their way home in cluttered environments. This is not only relevant for understanding bee movements, but also for other animals and humans navigating in 3D as well as the development of technologies inspired by natural systems, such as autonomous flying robots.

The Effect of Comb Cell Size on the Development of Apis mellifera Drones

Abstract:The growth and development of honeybees are influenced by many factors, one of which is the cell size of the brood comb. Larger worker bees can be obtained by being raised in bigger cells. However, whether cell size has the same effect on drone development is still unknown. Here, using 3D-printed foundations, we observed the development of drones kept in comb cells of different sizes from the late larval stage through eclosion. The results showed that drones in larger cell-size combs had heavier body weights, longer body lengths, and larger head widths, thorax widths, and abdomen widths compared to those in smaller cell-size combs. Furthermore, regardless of developmental stages, the drones' body weights increased linearly with the comb's cell size. However, the other morphological changes of drones in different developmental stages were out of proportion to the cell-size changes, resulting in smaller cells with a higher fill factor (thorax width/cell width). Our findings confirm that comb cell size affects the development of honeybees; drones become bigger when raised in large cells.

Abstract:Engineering honeycombs mimic the macroscopic geometry of natural honeycombs, but have yet to achieve the micro-structural sophistication of their natural counterparts. We studied the hierarchical structures, and measured the mechanical properties, of natural honeycombs. We show that the honeycomb walls are progressively self-stiffened with the time of usage, by adding reinforced layers reminiscent of modern fibre-reinforced composite laminates. The overall shear modulus of the comb increases more than threefold in one year and fourfold in two years. We also calculated the effective coefficient of thermal expansion of the honeycomb. The properties of conventional engineering porous or cellular media including honeycombs with homogeneous walls are bounded by two inherent constraints, namely, low stiffness and un-tunable coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) by their microstructures. The natural honeycombs may serve as a prototype of truly bio-mimetic unconventional cellular materials with improved stiffness and a tunable coefficient of thermal expansion via pore surface coating, as well as an example of cellular materials with structural transformation. Stiff, strong, and lightweight porous materials with tunable CTE are ideal for applications in environments with large temperature fluctuations.

Abstract:Compared to straight honeycombs, curved honeycombs derived from biomimetic strategies typically exhibit superior mechanical properties and a broader tunable range. Consequently, there has been a surge in research focusing on curved honeycombs. However, few studies have concurrently designed multiple honeycombs for reliable comparisons, and little attention has been given to isotropy. In this study, circle arc walls were introduced to replace the straight walls of five classical honeycombs, thereby creating representative curved honeycombs for analysis. The numerical modeling method in ANSYS software was validated by experimentally testing 3D printed specimens of circle arc honeycombs. At the same mass and under loading conditions in different directions, it was found that the Young's modulus, yield strength, Poisson's ratio, and energy absorption of circle arc hexagon (CAH), circle arc square (CAS), circle arc triangle (CAT), circle arc re-entrant (CAR), and circle arc double-V (CAD) were assessed. Both experimental and numerical results revealed that CAH demonstrates superior energy absorption while maintaining a high degree of isotropy, characterized by all isotropic factors below 0.1 in mechanical properties. Notably, CAD exhibits a Negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) effect across all loading directions. These results provide benchmarks for future studies on curved honeycombs and guide further research in this field.

Abstract:Social insect colonies display a remarkable ability to adjust investment in reproduction (i.e., production of sexuals) in accordance with environmental conditions such as season and food availability. How this feat is accomplished by the colony’s queen(s) and workers remains a puzzle. Here, I review what we have learned about this subject in the European honeybee (Apis mellifera), specifically with regard to a colony’s production of males (drones). I identify five environmental conditions that influence colony-level patterns of drone production and then define five stages of drone rearing that are accomplished by the queen and workers. Using this framework, I detail our current understanding of how the queen or workers adjust their actions at each stage of drone rearing in response to each of the environmental conditions. Future investigations of this topic in honeybees and other social insect societies will lead to a better understanding of how colonies manage to flexibly and efficiently allocate their resources under changing environmental conditions.

Remarkable Sensitivity of Young Honey Bee Workers to Multiple Non-photic, Non-thermal, Forager Cues That Synchronize Their Daily Activity Rhythms

Abstract:Honey bees live in colonies containing tens of thousands of workers that coordinate their activities to produce efficient colony-level behavior. In free-foraging colonies, nest bees are entrained to the forager daily phase of activity even when experiencing conflicting light-dark illumination regime, but little is known on the cues mediating this potent social synchronization. We monitored locomotor activity in an array of individually caged bees in which we manipulated the contact with neighbour bees. We used circular statistics and coupling function analyses to estimate the degree of social synchronization. We found that young bees in cages connected to cages housing foragers showed stronger rhythms, better synchronization with each other, higher coupling strength, and a phase more similar to that of the foragers compared to similar bees in unconnected cages. These findings suggest that close distance contacts are sufficient for social synchronization or that cage connection facilitated the propagation of time-giving social cues. Coupling strength was higher for bees placed on the same tray compared with bees at a similar distance but on a different tray, consistent with the hypothesis that substrate borne vibrations mediate phase synchronization. Additional manipulation of the contact between cages showed that social synchronization is better among bees in cages connected with tube with a single mesh partition compared to sealed tubes consistent with the notion that volatile cues act additively to substrate borne vibrations. These findings are consistent with self-organization models for social synchronization of activity rhythms and suggest that the circadian system of honey bees evolved remarkable sensitivity to non-photic, non-thermal, time giving entraining cues enabling them to tightly coordinate their behavior in the dark and constant physical environment of their nests.
B A Novel control scheme for a Grid Connected WindFarm and Marine-Current Farm Using a STATCOM

Abstract:This paper presents a control scheme based on a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to achieve both voltage control and damping enhancement of a grid-connected integrated 80-MW offshore wind farm (OWF) and 40-MW marine-current farm (MCF). The performance of the studied OWF is simulated by an equivalent doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) driven by an equivalent wind turbine (WT) while an equivalent squirrel-cage rotor induction generator (SCIG) driven by an equivalent marine-current turbine (MCT) is employed to simulate the characteristics of the MCF. A damping controller of the STATCOM is designed by using modal control theory to contribute effective damping characteristics to the studied system under different operating conditions. A frequency-domain approach based on a linearized system model using eigenvalue techniques and a time-domain scheme based on a nonlinear system model subject to various disturbances are both employed to simulate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. It can be concluded from the simulated results that the proposed STATCOM joined with the designed damping controller is very effective to stabilize the studied system under disturbance conditions. The voltage fluctuations of the AC bus subject to the active-power variations of the studied system can also be effectively controlled by the proposed control scheme.

Abstract:When wild honey bee colonies ( Apis mellifera ) nest in hollow tree cavities, they coat the rough cavity walls with a continuous layer of propolis, a substance comprised primarily of plant resins. Studies have shown that the resulting “propolis envelope” leads to both individual- and colony-level health benefits. Unfortunately, the smooth wooden boxes most commonly used in beekeeping do little to stimulate propolis collection. As a result, most managed bees live in hives that are propolis-poor. In this study, we assessed different surface texture treatments (rough wood boxes, boxes outfitted with propolis traps, and standard, smooth wood boxes) in terms of their ability to stimulate propolis collection, and we examined the effect of propolis on colony health, pathogen loads, immune gene expression, bacterial gene expression, survivorship, and honey production in both stationary and migratory beekeeping contexts. We found that rough wood boxes are the most effective box type for stimulating propolis deposition. Although the use of rough wood boxes did not improve colony survivorship overall, Melissococcus plutonius detections via gene expression were significantly lower in rough wood boxes, and viral loads for multiple viruses tended to decrease as propolis deposition increased. By the end of year one, honey bee populations in migratory rough box colonies were also significantly larger than those in migratory control colonies. The use of rough wood boxes did correspond with decreased honey production in year one migratory colonies but had no effect during year two. Finally, in both stationary and migratory operations, propolis deposition was correlated with a seasonal decrease and/or stabilization in the expression of multiple immune and bacterial genes, suggesting that propolis-rich environments contribute to hive homeostasis. These findings provide support for the practical implementation of rough box hives as a means to enhance propolis collection and colony health in multiple beekeeping contexts.
