Abstract:Photoactivating dental resin composites have been the most prevailing material for repairing dental defects in various clinical scenarios due to their multiple advantages. However, compared to other restorative materials, the surface of resin-based composites is more susceptible to plaque biofilm accumulation, which can lead to secondary caries and restoration failure. This study introduced different weight fractions (1, 2, 5, 10, and 15%) of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs) as antibacterial fillers into dental resin composites. Multifarious properties of the material were investigated, including antibacterial activity against a human salivary plaque-derived biofilm, cytotoxicity on human gingival fibroblasts, mechanical and physicochemical properties as well as the performance when subjected to thermocycling aging treatment. Results showed that the incorporation of MgONPs significantly improved the composites' anti-biofilm capability even at a low amount of 2 wt % without compromising the mechanical, physicochemical, and biocompatibility performances. The results of the thermocycling test suggested certain of aging resistance. Moreover, a small amount of MgONPs possibly made a difference in enhancing photoactivated polymerization and increasing the curing depth of experimental resin composites. Overall, this study highlights the potential of MgONPs as an effective strategy for developing antibacterial resin composites, which may help mitigating cariogenic biofilm-associated secondary caries.
Bond strength and surface roughness assessment of novel antimicrobial polymeric coated dental cement

Abstract:Resin cement integrated with zein-incorporated magnesium oxide nanoparticles has previously been found to inhibit oral microbes and decrease bacterial biofilm. However, the bond strength and surface features of this biomaterial have yet to be investigated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength, mode of fracture, and surface roughness of resin cement modified with zein-incorporated magnesium oxide nanoparticles. Characterization of the cement was performed by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. 126 human teeth were divided into 3 groups and cemented to lithium disilicate ceramic using resin cement with zein-incorporated magnesium oxide nanoparticles at concentrations of 0%, 1%, and 2% (n = 42). 21 samples of each group were subjected to the shear bond strength test, while the other 21 underwent thermocycling for 10,000 cycles before the test, after which all samples were evaluated for the mode of fracture. To assess surface roughness, resin cement disks were analyzed by a profilometer before and after undergoing thermocycling for 10,000 cycles. The shear bond strength of the cement with 1% and 2% nanoparticles was significantly higher than the control before thermocycling. The mode of fracture was found to be mainly adhesive with all groups, with the unmodified cement presenting the highest cohesive failure. There was no significant difference in surface roughness between the groups before or after thermocycling. The addition of zein-incorporated magnesium oxide nanoparticles to resin cement improved or maintained the shear bond strength and surface roughness of the resin cement.
Noninvasive assessment of novel nanohybrid resin cement adaptation using cross-polarization optical coherence tomography

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Zein-coated magnesium oxide nanoparticles (zMgO NPs) can potentially improve cement adaptation to the tooth-restoration interface, which would aid in minimizing marginal leakage and secondary caries. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of incorporating zMgO NPs on the adaptation of self-adhesive resin cement using cross-polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).METHODS: Resin inlays were fabricated to be cemented in Class-I cavities of extracted human molars. All specimens were randomly divided into five groups (n = 10), and the resin inlays were cemented using self-adhesive resin cement with various concentrations of zMgO NPs (0% [control], 0.3%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%). Characterization was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and SEM. The specimens were examined for interfacial adaptation under CP-OCT. Floor and wall adaptation measurements were analyzed by software on 20 B-scans, and samples were sectioned for interfacial measurement by SEM.RESULTS: Results for CP-OCT and SEM showed a statistically significant increase of adaptation in the floor and wall of resin cement filled with zMgO NPs compared to the control. The samples enhanced with 0.3% and 0.5% showed a statistically significantly better adaptation in floor and wall in CP-OCT and SEM. However, there was no significant difference between the 1%, 2%, and control groups for CP-OCT and SEM analysis.SIGNIFICANCE: The incorporation of zMgO NPs in self-adhesive resin cement can enhance the cement's properties by significantly improving its wall and floor adaptation.

Abstract:Background and purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the physico-mechanical, anti-bacterial, and anti-demineralization properties of orthodontic resin composite containing photoactivated zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) on Streptococcus mutans biofilm around ceramic and metal brackets. Material and methods: Following the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination for ZnONPs, shear bond strength (SBS) was tested for composites containing different concentrations of ZnONPs. The chosen concentration was used to evaluate the microleakage, anti-bacterial, and anti-demineralization properties. Results: Adding 50μg/mL of ZnONPs to the orthodontic composite did not negatively affect its physico-mechanical properties. ZnONPs (50μg/mL)-mediated aPDT and 0.2% chlorhexidine significantly (P=0.000) reduced S. mutans biofilms compared to the phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) groups (metal/PBS=7.47±0.7×106, and ceramic/PBS=7.47±0.7×106), with the lowest colony count observed in these groups (metal/chlorhexidine=1.06±0.4×105, ceramic/chlorhexidine=1±0.2×105, metal/ZnONPs-mediated aPDT=1.33±0.3×105, and ceramic/ZnONPs-mediated aPDT=1.2±0.3×105). Sodium fluoride varnish and ZnONPs-mediated aPDT showed the highest efficacy in anti-demineralization and significantly improving the enamel surface microhardness compared to the artificial saliva, especially in ceramic bracket groups (524.17±42.78N and 441.00±29.48N, 394.17±46.83N, P=0.000, and P=0.003, respectively). Conclusion: ZnONPs (50μg/mL)-mediated aPDT effectively inhibited S. mutans biofilm and promoted anti-demineralization without adverse effects on the physico-mechanical properties of the composite resin. These results suggest the potential of this method in preventing white spot lesions during orthodontic treatment.
Rupture of pseudoaneurysm into hepaticojejunal anastomosis: report of three cases.

Abstract:Bleeding complications are less common after major pancreatic resections. They are more often associated with pancreatic fistula. The authors present three cases of a unique situation, when pseudoaneurysm of the common hepatic artery ruptured into the hepaticojejunal anastomosis, causing massive upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage. The basic operations were pancreatic resections for malignancy. In two out of the three cases intra-abdominal infection developed postoperatively. Computer tomographic angiography was a useful tool to reveal the source of bleeding. A re-do surgery was carried out whereby bleeding control was achieved with haemostatic sutures and the biliodigestive anastomoses were also repaired. Re-bleeding did not occur postoperatively and the liver function remained normal. The authors emphasize that in case of severe gastrointestinal bleeding after pancreatic resection, this rare entity ought to be taken into account in the differential diagnosis.
Development of Novel Polymerizable Antibacterial Monomer and Its Antibacterial Effects on Dental Adhesive

Abstract:The object of the present study was to Functionalize adhesive system with antibacterial activity without interfering the bonding effect, to kill bacteria residue on cavity and prevent bacteria from colonization on the margins of bonding. The fluorine -containing imidazolium salt antibacterial monomer was synthesized by the combination reaction of 1-chlorododecane and 1-vinylimidazole, and the replacement reaction to introduce fluoride ion. The synthesized intermediate product and final product were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Fluoride ion was introduced into the bonding system in the form of organic fluorine, and the release behavior of fluoride ion from the functionalized adhesive was studied. The antibacterial experiment showed that the functionalized adhesive was endowed with good antibacterial property, which realized targeted anti -caries ability. The bond strength test indicated that the functionalization with the fluorine -containing imidazolium salt monomer did not affect the bonding performance of the adhesive. These results suggested that adhesive functionalized with the fluorine -containing imidazolium salt monomer had potential for reducing the occurrence of clinical secondary caries.

Abstract:Preeclampsia is characterized by intense and prolonged vasoconstriction. Rho A—mediated calcium sensitization is central to prolonged contractility of vascular smooth muscle. The aims of this study are (1) to investigate mRNA expression levels of Rho A/Rho kinases in placental tissues from normotensive and preeclamptic women and (2) to investigate the effects of 2 isoprostanes, 8-iso prostaglandin F2 α (8-iso PGF 2α ) and 8-iso prostaglandin E2 (8-iso PGE2), on small placental and myometrial vessel resistance and to determine if their effects were mediated via the Rho kinase pathway. Real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction for Rho A, ROCK I, and ROCK II was performed on total RNA from normotensive and preeclamptic placentae. The effects of 8- iso PGF 2α and 8-iso PGE2 (alone and with the specific Rho kinase inhibitor Y-27632) on placental and myometrial vessels (<400 µm) were measured and compared with control recordings. Rho A mRNA expression levels were significantly higher in placentae from preeclamptic women than in placentae from normotensive women (P < .01). There was no significant difference in expression levels of ROCK I and ROCK II between both tissue types (P > .05). Both isoprostanes exerted a significant concentration-dependent vasocontractile effect on both vessel types (P < .001). This effect was antagonized by Y-27632 in placental arteries but not in myometrial arteries. Increased Rho A mRNA expression in placentae from preeclamptic women is suggestive of a role for the Rho kinase pathway in the modulation of the placental vasculature in this condition. Isoprostanes exert their vasocontractile effect, in placental vasculature, in part via the Rho kinase pathway.
A Multifunctional Dental Resin Composite with Sr-N-Doped TiO2 and n-HA Fillers for Antibacterial and Mineralization Effects

Abstract:Dental caries, particularly secondary caries, which is the main contributor to dental repair failure, has been the subject of extensive research due to its biofilm-mediated, sugar-driven, multifactorial, and dynamic characteristics. The clinical utility of restorations is improved by cleaning bacteria nearby and remineralizing marginal crevices. In this study, a novel multifunctional dental resin composite (DRC) composed of Sr-N-co-doped titanium dioxide (Sr-N-TiO2) nanoparticles and nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) reinforcing fillers with improved antibacterial and mineralization properties is proposed. The experimental results showed that the anatase-phase Sr-N-TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized successfully. After this, the curing depth (CD) of the DRC was measured from 4.36 ± 0.18 mm to 5.10 ± 0.19 mm, which met the clinical treatment needs. The maximum antibacterial rate against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) was 98.96%, showing significant inhibition effects (p < 0.0001), which was experimentally verified to be derived from reactive oxygen species (ROS). Meanwhile, the resin exhibited excellent self-remineralization behavior in an SBF solution, and the molar ratio of Ca/P was close to that of HA. Moreover, the relative growth rate (RGR) of mouse fibroblast L929 indicated a high biocompatibility, with the cytotoxicity level being 0 or I. Therefore, our research provides a suitable approach for improving the antibacterial and mineralization properties of DRCs.

Abstract:Dental resin composite materials are widely used as dental fillings; however, the accumulation of microbes and the resulting secondary caries often leads to filling failure. ZnO, an inorganic antibacterial material, exhibits effective antibacterial properties and is considered safe for use. In this study, rod-like ZnO was prepared by using the atmospheric-pressure hydrothermal method, and its microstructure and antibacterial effects on Streptococcus mutans were studied. Subsequently, we created modified resins by incorporating rod-like ZnO at varying mass fractions and analyzed their morphological characteristics and elemental distributions. The antibacterial effectiveness, biocompatibility, and mechanical properties of these materials were examined using in vitro experiments. The results indicated that the rod-like ZnO exhibited a complete hexagonal wurtzite structure, with columnar dimensions of approximately 2.5 μm in length, 0.8 μm in diameter, and a lattice spacing of 0.2544 nm. The growth, biofilm formation, and biofilm destruction of S. mutans were significantly inhibited at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 times the minimum inhibitory concentration. The rod-like modified resin, with mass fractions of 2.5, 5, and 7.5 wt%, exhibited evident inhibitory effects on S. mutans biofilm formation. These modified resins demonstrated no cytotoxicity toward HGF-1 cells and exhibited enhanced compressive strength. Therefore, rod-like ZnO modified resin has promising potential for the treatment of dental caries.

Enhanced Antimicrobial Properties of Polymeric Denture Materials Modified with Zein-Coated Inorganic Nanoparticles

Abstract:Background: Polymeric denture materials can be susceptible to colonization by oral microorganisms. Zein-coated magnesium oxide nanoparticles (zMgO NPs) demonstrate antimicrobial activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial effect and adherence of different oral microorganisms on hybrid polymeric denture materials incorporated with zMgO NPs. Methods: Five types of polymeric denture materials were used. A total of 480 disc-shaped specimens were divided by material type (n=96/grp), then subdivided by zMgO NPs concentration: control with no nanoparticles and other groups with zMgO NPs concentrations of 0.3%, 0.5% and 1% by weight. Characterization of the polymeric denture materials incorporating zMgO NPs was done, and the antimicrobial activity of all groups was tested against four types of microorganisms: 1) Streptococcus mutans, 2) Staphylococcus aureus, 3) Enterococcus faecalis and 4) Candida albicans. The samples underwent an adherence test and an agar diffusion test. Experiments were done in triplicates. Results: The characterization of the hybrid samples revealed variation in the molecular composition, as well as a uniform distribution of the zMgO NPs in the polymeric denture materials. All hybrid polymeric denture materials groups induced a statistically significant antimicrobial activity, while the control groups showed the least antimicrobial activity. The agar diffusion test revealed no release of the zMgO NPs from the hybrid samples, indicating the NPs did not seep out of the matrix. Conclusion: The zMgO NPs were effective in reducing the adherence of the tested microorganisms and enhancing the antimicrobial activity of the polymeric denture materials. This antimicrobial effect with the polymeric dentures could aid in resisting microbial issues such as denture stomatitis.
The effect of Co-encapsulated GNPs-CNTs nanofillers on mechanical properties, degradation and antibacterial behavior of Mg-based composite

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg)-based composites, as one group of the biodegradable materials, enjoy high biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity making them a great option for implant applications. In this paper, by the semi powder metallurgy (SPM) technique, the graphene nano-platelets (GNPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) nanosystems, as reinforcements, are dispersed homogenously in the Mg-Zn (MZ) alloy matrix. Subsequently, the composite is successfully produced employing the spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. Compared to the unreinforced MZ sample, GNPs + CNTs mixture reinforced composite exhibits higher compressive strength (∼75%). Notably, adding only 1 wt % of GNPs + CNTs to the MZ matrix reduces the rate of the degradation in the Mg-based composite by almost 2- fold. Examining the antibacterial activity demonstrate that the incorporation of GNPs + CNTs into the Mg-based matrix is likely to prevent the infiltration and development of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) significantly. While the MTT with 0.5 and 1 wt % GNPs + CNTs does not demonstrate cytotoxicity to the MG63 cells, the excessive GNPs + CNTs results in a certain degree of poisonousness. In general, the findings of the present research attest to the viable application of MZ/GNPs + CNTs composites for implants as well as bone infection treatment.
In Vitro Antibacterial Activity of a Novel Resin-Based Pulp Capping Material Containing the Quaternary Ammonium Salt MAE-DB and Portland Cement.

Abstract:Background: Vital pulp preservation in the treatment of deep caries is challenging due to bacterial infection. The objectives of this study were to synthesize a novel, light-cured composite material containing bioactive calcium-silicate (Portland cement, PC) and the antimicrobial quaternary ammonium salt monomer 2-methacryloxylethyl dodecyl methyl ammonium bromide (MAE-DB) and to evaluate its effects on Streptococcus mutans growth in vitro.Methods: The experimental material was prepared from a 2: 1 ratio of PC mixed with a resin of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate, bisphenol glycerolate dimethacrylate, and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (4: 3: 1) containing 5 wt% MAE-DB. Cured resin containing 5% MAE-DB without PC served as the positive control material, and resin without MAE-DB or PC served as the negative control material. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and calcium hydroxide (Dycal) served as commercial controls. S. mutans biofilm formation on material surfaces and growth in the culture medium were tested according to colony-forming units (CFUs) and metabolic activity after 24 h incubation over freshly prepared samples or samples aged in water for 6 months. Biofilm formation was also assessed by Live/Dead staining and scanning electron microscopy.Results: S. mutans biofilm formation on the experimental material was significantly inhibited, with CFU counts, metabolic activity, viability staining, and morphology similar to those of biofilms on the positive control material. None of the materials affected bacterial growth in solution. Contact-inhibition of biofilm formation was retained by the aged experimental material. Significant biofilm formation was observed on MTA and Dycal.Conclusion: The synthesized material containing HEMA-BisGMA-TEGDMA resin with MAE-DB as the antimicrobial agent and PC to support mineralized tissue formation inhibited S. mutans biofilm formation even after aging in water for 6 months, but had no inhibitory effect on bacteria in solution. Therefore, this material shows promise as a pulp capping material for vital pulp preservation in the treatment of deep caries.

Abstract:Experimental adhesives containing co-doped metaloxide nanoparticles were demonstrated to display strong and long-term antibacterial properties against Streptococcus mutans biofilms. The present study represents an effort to characterize the shear-bond strength (SBS) and color stability (CS) of these novel biomaterials. Experimental adhesives were obtained by dispersing nitrogen and fluorine co-doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles (NF_TiO2, 10%, 20% or 30%, v/v%) into OptiBond Solo Plus (OPTB). Dentin surfaces were wet-polished (600-Grit). Specimens (n = 5/group) of Tetric EvoCeram were fabricated and bonded using either OPTB or experimental (OPTB + NF_TiO2) adhesives. Specimens were stored in water (37 °C) for twenty-four hours (T1), three months (T2), and six months (T3). At T1, T2, or T3, specimens were removed from water storage and were tested for SBS. Disc-shaped specimens (n = 10/group; d = 6.0 mm, t = 0.5 mm) of adhesives investigated were fabricated and subjected to thermocycling (10,000 cycles, 5−55 °C, 15 s dwell time). Specimens’ colors were determined with a VITA Easyshade® V spectrophotometer (after every 1000 cycles). SBS data was analyzed using two-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests, while CS data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests (α = 0.05). Mean values of SBS ranged from 16.39 ± 4.20 MPa (OPTB + 30%NF_TiO2) to 19.11 ± 1.11 MPa (OPTB), from 12.99 ± 2.53 MPa (OPTB + 30% NF_TiO2) to 14.87 ± 2.02 (OPTB) and from 11.37 ± 1.89 (OPTB + 20% NF_TiO2) to 14.19 ± 2.24 (OPTB) after twenty-four hours, three months, and six months of water storage, respectively. Experimental materials had SBS values that were comparable (p > 0.05) to those from OPTB independently of nanoparticle concentration or time-point considered. Experimental materials with higher NF_TiO2 concentrations had less intense color variations and were more color stable than OPTB even after 10,000 thermocycles. In combination, the results reported have demonstrated that experimental adhesives can establish strong and durable bonds to human dentin while displaying colors that are more stable, thereby suggesting that the antibacterial nanotechnology investigated can withstand the harsh conditions within the oral cavity without compromising the esthetic component of dental restorations.

This article reviews recent studies on developing a new generation of bioactive resins with anticaries properties. Extensive effects were made to develop new antimicrobial composites, bonding agents, and other resins containing quaternary ammonium methacrylates to suppress plaque buildup and bacterial acid production. The effects of alkyl chain length and charge density and the antimicrobial mechanisms for chlorhexidine, nano-silver, quaternary ammonium methacrylates, and protein-repellent agents were discussed. Synergistic effects of contact-killing and protein-repellent properties were shown to yield the greatest biofilm-inhibition effects. The combination of antimicrobial, protein-repellent, and calcium phosphate nanoparticle remineralization was suggested to provide maximal anticaries effects. In addition, for use orally, cytotoxicity and biocompatibility were important considerations for the new bioactive materials. Furthermore, rather than kill all bacteria, it would be more desirable to modulate the oral biofilm compositions via bioactive resins to suppress cariogenic/pathogenic species and promote benign species. For widespread clinical use of the new antimicrobial and therapeutic materials, whether they would induce bacterial drug resistance needs to be determined, which requires further study. Nonetheless, the new generation of bioactive anticaries resins with therapeutic and biofilm acid-inhibiting properties has the potential to substantially benefit oral health.

Antimicrobial activity of biosynthesized silver nanoparticles, amoxicillin, and glass-ionomer cement against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract:Abstract Background . The development of dental caries is associated with various microorganisms and secondary caries formation is the main cause of restorations failure. The advice for restorative dental materials that have antimicrobial properties has stimulated the introduction of materials containing different antibacterial agents. Objectives . The present study has been designed to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and incorporate AgNPs and amoxicillin into glass ionomer cement (GIC) to synergize its effect on oral microbes. The effect of the added antimicrobial agents on compressive strength (CS) of GIC was also evaluated. Material and methods . Biosynthesis of AgNPs was done using Cupressus macrocarpa extract and AgNPs were characterized. A total of 120 disc-shaped specimens were prepared and classified into 4 main groups where Group A includes conventional GIC, Groups B and C include GIC with AgNPs or amoxicillin, respectively, while Group D included GIC with both AgNPs and amoxicillin. Each group was tested for the antimicrobial activity against both Streptococcus mutans ( S. mutans ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). The distribution of biofilm was examined via a scanning electron microscope. The CS of the tested material was measured using a Material Test System. Results . The UV−visible spectrum showed a peak of 429 nm. Transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction pattern and Fourier transform infrared analysis confirmed the formation of AgNPs with spherical to oblong polydispersed particles of diameter in the range of 13.5–25.8 nm. The maximum inhibitory zone was recorded for group D against both tested bacteria with a mean of 29 mm at first 24 h period to 15 mm at three weeks and showed antimicrobial rate 92.2% and 92.56%, against both strains, respectively. Additionally, group D disintegrated the structure of S. aureus biofilm and even kill bacteria in the biofilms. The addition of AgNPs and amoxicillin caused an insignificant effect on CS of GIC. Conclusion. TheAgNPs showed a synergistic effect in combination with amoxicillin and GIC dental restorative material against studied microorganisms. The agents can be safely added with minimal effect on the mechanical properties of the original cement.

Improving the Antibacterial Properties of Dental Bonding Materials Loaded with Silver Compounds

Abstract:Biofilm accumulation, the appearance of white spot lesions and the development of secondary caries are the main complications in orthodontic patients. A promising approach to fight this situation is the development of adhesive cements with improved antibacterial properties. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of improving the antibacterial properties of glass ionomer cements by incorporating different types of antimicrobial compounds without altering their physical and mechanical properties. Different concentrations of silver carbonate (SC) and an inorganic glass with encapsulated silver were added to the glass ionomer cement, as well as chitosan, to achieve synergistic antibacterial activity. Variations in the antibacterial capacity were evaluated using the agar diffusion test; the potential alteration of the physical and mechanical properties of the material was analyzed by the shear bond strength test. SEM characterization and colorimetric evaluation were also conducted. Samples of SC up to 1% and inorganic glass with encapsulated silver up to 5% showed significant improvement in their antibacterial ability without compromising shear strength. The highest antimicrobial activity was observed for Lactobacillus acidophilus, with inhibition zones of 3.8 and 3.1 mm for SC and inorganic glass, respectively. The characterization of the samples did not detect any major structural changes between the different samples. The only group that underwent a noticeable color change was the group with SC. The results show that the incorporation of silver carbonate and inorganic glass with encapsulated silver provided the glass ionomer cement with an antibacterial capacity without compromising the bond strength and without modifying the structure of the material.

Development of antibacterial dual-cure dental resin composites via tetrapod-shaped zinc oxide incorporation

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of incorporating the 0-20 wt% tetrapod-shaped zinc oxide (tZnO) whiskers on the mechanical, antibacterial, and cytotoxic properties exhibited by experimental dual-cure resin composites. Methods: Commercially obtained tZnO whiskers underwent surface modification using 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS). Subsequently, four groups of resin composites containing 0, 5, 10, and 20 wt% silanized tZnO along with barium borosilicate glass (BaBSG) fillers were fabricated while maintaining total filler loading at 60 wt%. Mechanical properties were examined utilizing specimens produced adhering to ISO 4049:2019 guidelines where applicable. Depth of cure was quantified immediately, while three-point flexural strength, flexural modulus, fracture toughness, Vickers hardness, compressive strength, and diametral tensile strength were assessed after 24 h of storage in 37 °C distilled water. Planktonic bacteria of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) were cultured and tested for antibacterial activity using disk diffusion and microbial anti-adhesion assays. Cytotoxicity was examined by preparing extracts from specimens in a cell culture medium and exposing stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) to serial dilutions of these extracts, then assessing cell viability and survival using CCK-8 assay and live/dead staining. Results: Elevating tZnO loading yielded significant reductions in depth of cure, compressive (from 296.4 to 254.6 MPa), and diametral tensile strength (from 42.7 to 31.0 MPa), while flexural strength (91.3-94.1 MPa), flexural modulus (6.4-6.6 GPa), fracture toughness (0.96-1.04 MPa·m0.5), and Vickers hardness (36.5-37.4 kgf·mm-2) remained the same. Composites integrating tZnO displayed markedly enhanced antibacterial activity against S. mutans, based on anti-adhesion tests and live/dead staining. No cytotoxicity was observed for SHED treated with extracts from resin composites possessing up to 20 wt% tZnO whiskers. Significance: This study demonstrates that incorporating up to 20 wt% silanized tZnO in place of traditional barium glass particles appreciably enhances dual-cure resin composite antibacterial function against S. mutans without compromising mechanical properties.

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the in vivo effect of Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles and methacryloyloxyethyl phosphoryl choline (MPC) polymer modifications of glass-ionomer cement, to inhibit demineralization around orthodontic bands. Materials and Methods: 60 orthodontic patients with non-carious molars scheduled for banding were randomly divided into three groups. Grouping was based on (3% MPC, 3% nano-Titanium, and 3%+3% of both by weight) added to the luting glass-ionomer cement (GIC) Medicem, which was used for cementation of prefabricated micro-etched orthodontic bands. Demineralization was recorded by using DiagnoDent pen (KaVo, Biberach, Germany) device. Statistical evaluation was performed with one way ANOA test. Results: Bands cemented with conventional GIC showed the highest bacterial scores in comparison to those cemented with MPC polymer and nano-titanium modified GICs. There was significant difference between teeth banded with 3% MPC, 3% nano-titanium, and 3% MPC + 3% nano-titanium modified GICs. Conclusions: Modification of the banding GIC with MPC polymer and nano-titanium revealed a positive effect on reducing white spots around orthodontic bands.
