Abstract:We present the first structural evidence of mono- and bis(pyridine) chloronium cations. The latter was synthesized from a mixture of pyridine, elemental chlorine and sodium tetrafluoroborate in propionitrile at low temperatures. The mono(pyridine) chloronium cation was realized with the less reactive pentafluoropyridine, using ClF, AsF 5 , and C 5 F 5 N in anhydrous HF. During the course of this study, we also investigated pyridine dichlorine adducts and found a surprising disproportionation reaction of chlorine that depended on the substitutional pattern of the pyridine. Electron richer dimethylpyridine (lutidine) derivatives favor a full disproportionation into a positively and a negatively charged chlorine atom which forms a trichloride monoanion, while unsubstituted pyridine forms a 1:1 py∙Cl 2 adduct.

Abstract:The M–C–X⋯X′ halogen bond may be considered as a novel supramolecular synthon for prediction and design of polymeric metal frameworks. In this work, a set of theoretical models, consisting of two series of complexes PyCl⋯X (PyCl=NC5H4Cl-4; X=F−, Cl−, or Br−) and MPyCl⋯X (M=Cu+, Zn2+), was utilized to reveal features of M–C–X⋯X′. To explore the influence of metal centers, a detailed comparison of the properties in PyCl⋯X and MPyCl⋯X complexes was carried out. The results showed that, while coordinating to metals, interaction energies and charge transfers exhibit a remarkable increase, which have been rationalized by analyses of electrostatic potential and density difference function. Furthermore, the individual energy contributions were examined through the symmetry-adapted perturbation theory, and the results indicated that the dominant energy contribution emerges from the electrostatic and induction energy, and the electrostatic term presents a higher increment than other energy components.
Density Functional Theory Studies on Structure, Spectra, and Electronic Properties of 3,7-Dinitrodibenzobromolium Cation and Chloride

Abstract:The structural and electronic properties of the 3,7-dinitrodibenzobromolium cation and chloride were studied using first-principle methods, based on the density functional theory (DFT). Different forms of exchange and correlation functions and basis sets were considered, and their suitability in studying such large molecules were assessed by comparing the calculated results with available X-ray diffraction data. The DFT results were also compared with those obtained previously using the Hartree-Fock (HF) method. The DFT methods improved on the calculated IR and Raman spectra, confirming the superiority of the DFT methods over the HF method in predicting harmonic frequencies, particularly for organic nitro compounds. The geometric parameters obtained using the hybrid DFT methods, such as B3LYP, B3P86, and B3PW91, are compatible with the results of the HF method. The structure of 3,7-dinitrodibenzobromolium chloride was optimized with and without symmetry constraints (such and C-s and C-2v) separately. The C-1 structure obtained from optimization without any symmetry constraints and the C-s structure were proven to be identical, using more-stringent convergence criteria in the structure optimization. Intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) calculation was performed, following the frequency calculation for the optimized C-2v structure. The results confirmed that the C-2v structure is the transition structure connecting the two energy minimum stuctures in C-s symmetry. A strong ionic bond is formed between the chloride anion and the 3,7-dinitrodibenzobromolium cation, with a Br-Cl bond length of 2.606 Angstrom. Further studies were conducted to obtain the electronic density, electrostatic potential, and charge distribution of the chloride and the cation in its planar form and with the rotation of the nitro group. The charge distribution of other halides are also investigated and discussed. Knowledge of the electron properties is useful for understanding the bonding and biological activities of this molecule.

Abstract:Chlorine covalently bonded to an open shell metal is present in many materials with desirable or intriguing physical properties. Materials include highly luminescent nontoxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites for optoelectronic applications K2CuCl3 and Rb2CuCl3, enantiomorphic CsCuCl3 that presents magneto-chiral dichroism at a low temperature, and cubic K2RuCl6 that possesses a singlet ground state generated by antiparallel spin and orbital angular momenta. Structural chirality of CsCuCl3 has been confirmed by resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction. We explore likely benefits of the technique at the chlorine K-edge using a symmetry inspired method of calculation applied to chlorine multipoles. Already, a low energy feature in corresponding x-ray absorption spectra of many compounds has been related to the chlorine-metal bond. Bragg diffraction from chlorine in cubic K2RuCl6 is treated in detail. Diffraction patterns for rhombohedral compounds that present space-group forbidden Bragg spots are found to be relatively simple.

Abstract:Triazaphospholes are potential polydentate ligands due to the presence of both phosphorus and nitrogen donor atoms within the aromatic 5‐membered heterocycle. The incorporation of an additional pyridyl‐substituent opens up the possibility of a post‐synthesis modification via chemoselective and also stepwise alkylation exclusively of the nitrogen atoms. This can be controlled by the choice and by the stoichiometry of the electrophile and allows the targeted synthesis of a variety of novel mono‐ and dicationic ligands. Reaction with Cu(I)‐halides causes the formation of cuprates of the type [CuXn](n‐1)‐, which enables coordination of the π‐acidic phosphorus donor to the negatively charged metal core, which is favored over the coordination by a strongly σ‐donating nitrogen atom. The use of cationic triazaphosphole derivatives can be used as a strategy to enforce the coordination of the ligand to an electron rich metal solely via the phosphorus atom. However, there is a subtle balance between the formation of either coordination polymers or dimeric structures, as the substitution pattern on the heterocycle and the nature of the halide have a large influence on the coordination motifs formed.

Abstract:The paper examines the effect of introducing a chlorine atom into the coordination sphere of a rare earth ion for two novel Eu 3+ organometallic compounds. Using spectral and time-resolved measurements, we show that the introduction of a chlorine atom provides a way to achieve a significant increase (from 27 to 36%) in the luminescence efficiency of the studied compounds due to coordination symmetry breaking in the complexes.

Abstract:Density functional theory was used to study the coordination of Cm3+ and Ce4+ with pridine (Py), water (H2O) and chloride anion (Cl-). The competitive coordination of Cl- and Py was investigated to simulate the ligand exchange between Cl(-)and Py at high concentration of hydrochloric acid (HCl), where Cm3+ and Ce4+ may exist in the form of [CmCl6](3-) and [CeCl6](2-), while that of water and Py to simulate the process at low concentration or without the presence of Cl-. The calculations show that Ce4+ has higher affinity to Py than Cm3+ in the absence of Cl-, while it binds much more weakly at high concentration of HCl. This is consistent with experimental data that at high concentration of HCl, Ce4+ has much shorter retention time than Cm3+ using tertiary pyridine resin (TPR). In view of the strengthening of M-Cl and the weakening of M-OW at bonds upon the coordination of Py, we conclude that the distinct coordination abilities of the three ligands to Ce4+ and Cm3+ are due to different strengths of the inner-shell electrostatic interaction between the ligands and the central metal ions.

Abstract:The interaction of pyridine derivatives (H, 4-NH2, 4-CH3, 4-F, 4-CN, 4-NO2) with atomic chlorine is investigated theoretically by the density functional theory (DFT)-based LC-BLYP/aug-cc-pVDZ method. Pyridines and Cl° are held together by a (2c--3e) bond and the intermolecular distances range from 2.313 to 2.343 Å. The existence of a N…Cl bond is confirmed by the atom-in-molecule analysis of the systems. The binding energies of the adducts, ranging from −42.08 to −53.96 kJ mol−1, are linearly correlated to the proton affinity of the pyridines. The charge transfer from pyridine to Cl° varies between 0.222 and 0.277 e. The spin density analysis shows that the strongest complex has the highest (2c–3e) character. The CH bonds are contracted and the ν(CH) vibrations are blueshifted owing to the decrease in σ*(CH) occupation. This decrease results not only from the classical anomeric effect but also from the σ(CC) and σ(CN) → σ*(CH) delocalisation in the heteroaromatic ring.

Abstract:The integral role of halide ions as a ligand in divalent palladium-catalyzed nucleophile-alkyne-alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl coupling reaction as well as in the stoichiometric reaction of arylpalladium reagents with acrolein was studied. Excess of halide ions can effectively inhibit the beta-hydride elimination of a (2-oxoalkyl)palladium intermediate, giving preferentially the protonolysis product in acidic media. This result may have further implications for the design and development of divalent palladium-catalyzed reactions.

Ditopic ligand effects on solution-phase equilibria and electrochemistry of atomically precise copper chalcogenide nanoclusters

Abstract:Atomically precise copper chalcogenide nanoclusters are an exceptionally diverse class of nanomaterials with potential applications in chemiluminescence, sensing, and catalysis. However, most previously reported nanoclusters have been characterized exclusively in the solid state, leaving open questions as to their stability and function in solution. In this work, we report the first detailed solution-phase investigation of speciation, electrochemistry, and decomposition of atomically precise [Cu12S6] supported by a series of mono- and ditopic alkyldiphenylphosphines PPh2R (R = Et, -(CH2)5-, -(CH2)8-). While electronically identical, this series of ligands features monotopic and ditopic binding modes spanning zero, one, or three axes of the [Cu12S6] core, facilitating an in-depth examination of the impact of phosphine binding topology on solution behaviour. We find that binding topology dictates the extent of speciation, with complete solution stability being afforded through use of the longer octane chelate dppo (1,8-bis(diphenylphosphino)octane). Thus, the 1H and DOSY NMR spectra of [Cu12S6(dppo)4] indicate a rigid, stereochemically locked ligand configuration in which substantial stabilizing CH---S interactions are present. Meanwhile, electrochemical analysis coupled with DFT calculations indicates that the [Cu12S6] core undergoes a quasireversible one-electron oxidation at –0.50 V vs Fc0/+. In contrast, prolonged air exposure or treatment with chemical oxidants results in cluster degradation with formation of phosphine sulfide byproducts. This work demonstrates both progress and challenges in controlling the solution-phase behaviour and redox chemistry of phosphine-supported copper chalcogenide nanoclusters.

Abstract:Direct installation of key functionalities in a molecule through C‐H bond activation is one of the thrust areas as well as challenging task in organic synthesis. Particularly, introduction of chlorine in a molecule imparts additional benefits for further functionalizations as well as improves the electronic behaviour such as lipophilicity and polarity towards drug development process. The chlorinated molecules have also been established as efficient biologically relevant scaffolds. Current manuscript has been focused on the direct installation of the chlorine atom at various aromatic and aliphatic positions to produce functional molecules. The key highlight of the manuscript belongs to the site selectivity (regioselectivity) for the installation of chlorine functionality. Manuscript describes the advanced methods developed for the direct C‐H chlorination reactions and further simplified for the chlorination reactions at various positions including aromatic (o‐, m‐, and p‐), benzylic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic positions. Directing groups (DGs) and the coordination with the catalyst is the key for the enhancement of regioselectivities during direct C‐H chlorination reactions.

Abstract:The Front Cover shows the almost magical site‐selective coordination of AuCl and [Pt(CNC)] to the novel long‐range “cis‐spanning” ligand LPP in a one‐pot reaction, followed by metal−metal bond‐formation through chloride abstraction. LPP is easily obtained in a one‐pot process by double‐deprotonation of phenyl acetylene followed by the addition of chlorodiphenylphosphine. The coordination of the gold and the platinum complexes to the phenylic and to the alkinylic phosphine sites of LPP is highly selective, but a metal−metal interaction is not realized immediately. Subsequent chloride abstraction, however, gives rise to the selective formation of a metal−metal bond. Even mythical creatures might be attracted by these elegant processes. Abstract:While thiocarbonyl-stabilised phosphonium ylides generally react upon flash vacuum pyrolysis by the extrusion of Ph3PS to give alkynes in an analogous way to their carbonyl-stabilised analogues, two examples with a hydrogen atom on the ylidic carbon are found to undergo a quite different process. The net transfer of a phenyl group from P to S gives (Z)-configured 1-diphenylphosphino-2-(phenylsulfenyl)alkenes in a novel isomerisation process via intermediate λ5-1,2-thiaphosphetes. These prove to be versatile hemilabile ligands with a total of seven complexes prepared involving five different transition metals. Four of these are characterised by X-ray diffraction with two involving the bidentate ligand forming a five-membered ring metallacycle and two with the ligand coordinating to the metal only through phosphorus.

Abstract:For a long time, the small group of cationic ligands stood out as obscure systems within the general landscape of coordinative chemistry. However, this situation has started to change rapidly during the last decade, with more and more examples of metal-coordinated cationic species being reported. The growing interest in these systems is not only of purely academic nature, but also driven by accumulating evidence of their high catalytic utility. Overcoming the inherently poor coordinating ability of cationic species often required additional structural stabilization. In numerous cases this was realized by functionalizing them with a pair of chelating side-arms, effectively constructing a pincer-type scaffold. This comprehensive review aims to encompass all cationic ligands possessing such pincer architecture reported to date. Herein every cationic species that has ever been embedded in a pincer framework is described in terms of its electronic structure, followed by an in-depth discussion of its donor/acceptor properties, based on computational studies (DFT) and available experimental data (IR, NMR or CV). We then elaborate on how the positive charge of these ligands affects the spectroscopic and redox properties, as well as the reactivity, of their complexes, compared to those of the structurally related neutral ligands. Among other systems discussed, this review also surveys our own contribution to this field, namely, the introduction of sulfonium-based pincer ligands and their complexes, recently reported by our group.

Dynamics and Coordination of a P2N2 Ligand – from Twisted Conformation to Chelation

Abstract:Based on their general spacial flexibility, their Lewis and Brønsted basicity, and ability to mimic second sphere effects the 1,5‐diaza‐3,7‐diphosphacyclooctane ligand family and their complexes have re‐gained substantial scientific interest. It was now possible to structurally analyze a recently reported member of this family with p‐tolyl and t‐butyl substituents on P and N, respectively, (P2p‐tolN2tBu). Notably, the ligand crystallizes with a 'twisted' backbone. This compound is the very first of its kind to have been unambiguously characterized with regard to its chemical and molecular structure as being in this conformation. A temperature‐dependent NMR study provides insight into the molecular dynamics of two isomers in solution, which are most likely also both twisted, as judged by the observed limited reactivity. Despite the in principle unfavorable conformation of the free ligand, it was successfully chelated to tungsten and molybdenum centers in mononuclear carbonyl complexes. The ligand, a derivative thereof and four new complexes were comprehensively characterized and analyzed in comparison. This includes single crystal XRD molecular structures of P2p‐tolN2tBu and all four complexes. P2p‐tolN2tBu, regardless of its twisted conformation, is able to coordinate to metal centers given that enough energy (heat) for a conformational change is provided.

Abstract:The cover feature image illustrates the chemical diversity of the force behind the chemistry of a bis‐phosphenium complex of chromium arising from photochemical stimulation ("the bright side") and thermally induced follow‐up processes ("the dark side"). This reactivity allows to accomplish the catalytic hydrogenation of alkenes via two complementary molecular pathways: a photochemical route, which proceeds under the action of a lightsaber (Sorry: under continuous irradiation) and involves a σ‐H2‐complex as key intermediate, or in a dark reaction in which a π‐alkene complex created in an initial photoreaction plays a central role. Another facet of the dark side is the ligand exchange reaction of the π‐complex with alkynes to produce metallacycles, which represent the products of a [2+2]‐cycloaddition and can be slashed in a photo‐hydrogenation process under recovery of the original bis‐phosphenium complex. Abstract:Electronic structures, charge distributions, geometries, valence force constants, and vibrational frequencies of the homoatomic clusters F3 +, Cl3 +, Br3 +, and I3 + and of the heteroatomic clusters ClF2 +, BrF2 +, IF2 +, BrCl2 +, ICl2 +, and IBr2 + were determined. The self-consistent field approach extended by MP2-correlation energy or density-functional corrections was applied using various basis sets. It was found that d- and f-type polarization functions play a crucial role as in some other halogen compounds. The MP2 approach yields the most satisfactory results. The effect of the crystalline environment surrounding the Cl3 +, Br3 +, and I3 + species is successfully simulated by a Madelung potential. Frequencies calculated in the crystal field are in reasonable agreement with the more reliable ones among the experimental results. Coupling force constants were determined. They are not consistent with some empirical rules. Bonding and charge distributions of the formally mixed-valence systems X+Y2 0 are discussed. X+ behaves like a divalent chalcogen with high electronegativity. Each of the X+-Y bonds in XY2 + is very similar to the bond in X-Y. We predict the experimentally unknown F3 + to be stable in vacuum but not in the solid state. Structures and frequencies of XY2 + species, which are as yet unknown, are also predicted.
An NMR and relativistic DFT investigation of one-bond nuclear spin-spin coupling in solid triphenyl group-14 chlorides

Abstract:A solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance and zeroth-order regular approximation density functional theory, ZORA-DFT, study of one-bond nuclear spin-spin coupling between group-14 nuclei and quadrupolar 35/37Cl nuclei in triphenyl group-14 chlorides, Ph3XCl (X = C, Si, Ge, Sn and Pb), is presented. This represents the first combined experimental and theoretical systematic study of spin-spin coupling involving spin-pairs containing quadrupolar nuclei. Solid-state NMR spectra have been acquired for all compounds in which X has a spin-1/2 isotope--13C, 29Si, [117/119]Sn and 207Pb-at applied magnetic fields of 4.70, 7.05 and 11.75 T. From simulations of these spectra, values describing the indirect spin-spin coupling tensor-the isotropic indirect spin-spin coupling constant, 1J(X, 35/37Cl)iso and the anisotropy of the J tensor, Delta1J(X, 35/37Cl)--have been determined for all but the lead-chlorine spin-pair. To better compare the indirect spin-spin coupling parameters between spin-pairs, 1J(iso) and Delta1J values were converted to their reduced coupling constants, 1K(iso) and Delta1K. From experiment, the sign of 1K(iso) was found to be negative while the sign of Delta1K is positive for all spin-pairs investigated. The magnitude of both 1K(iso) and Delta1K was found to increase as one moves down group-14. Theoretical values of the magnitude and sign of 1K(iso) and Delta1K were obtained from ZORA-DFT calculations and are in agreement with the available experimental data. From the calculations, the Fermi-contact mechanism was determined to provide the largest contribution to 1K(iso) for all spin-pairs while spin-dipolar and paramagnetic spin-orbit mechanisms make significant contributions to the anisotropy of K. The inclusion of relativistic effects was found to influence K(Sn,Cl) and K(Pb,Cl).
