Abstract:Wireless communications are increasingly used today. Despite such use, there is a significant perception of risk which makes exposure monitoring a significant concern today. The work described in this article was carried out within the framework of the European SEAWave project and the French Beyond5G project. The exposure assessment was evaluated using a personal exposimeter (MVG EMF Spy) whose compactness and ease of use make it more suitable and portable than a system combining measuring probes and spectrum analyzers. Measurements were carried out on the cellular frequency bands used by 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G, as well as that of Wi-Fi, in different modes of public transportation (RER, metro, tramway, bus, and train) circulating in the Paris region. The measurements have been analyzed by frequency band, type of public transportation, and type of environment encountered. For each set of measurements (e.g., metro lines, tramways), the mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis were evaluated and analyzed. For all exposure measurements taken in the 700, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2600, and 3500 MHz frequency bands, the overall average values are 0.39, 0.43, 0.30, 0.21, 0.18, 0.24 and 0.18 V/m, respectively. These measurements have, in all cases, a significant dispersion as shown by the ratios of standard deviations to mean values. The well-known K-means clustering technique was applied to these four parameters for different subsets of data. The number of clusters k = 3 has been chosen based on the analysis of the optimal value of k for the current dataset. Our analysis indicates that the first group's members display the highest mean values with moderate variance and the lowest values for the third and fourth moments. The second cluster is distinguished by points with large mean and variance, accompanied by moderate skewness and kurtosis. Conversely, the third group comprises points with the smallest mean and variance values, yet the largest measurements for the third and fourth moments.

Abstract:Recently, the monitoring of the radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure induced by cellular networks has received a great deal of attention. In this work, a set of 70 microenvironments (MEs) located in urban and rural areas are selected in France under, on the one hand, the French Beyond5G project, and on the other hand, the 5G expOsure, causaL effects and rIsk perception through citizen engagement (GOLIAT) EU project. The purpose of this study is to assess the RF-EMF DL exposure in residential areas, downtowns, business areas, train stations, and public transport rides. For that, we employ the personal ExpoM-RF4 dosimeter placed inside a backpack to perform the measurements in different MEs. To take into consideration the effect of the presence of the human body near the dosimeter, we propose a correction approach that is mainly based on comparing the measurements given by ExpoM-RF4 to the ones provided by a reference system using the Tektronix real-time spectrum analyzer (RTSA) far from the body. Then, we use metrics, such as the quadratic mean, standard deviation, and median of the electric (E) field to carry out a comparative study between different MEs with different RF bands. It was found that the RF-EMF exposure levels for all MEs are well below the maximum allowable exposure limit prescribed by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). In addition, we perform clustering analyses using the K-Means technique to group the MEs with comparable exposure levels. The results show that the exposure level is low, but generally higher in MEs located in Paris than in the other considered areas (i.e., Massy and three villages, namely Igny, Bures-sur-Yvette and Gif-Sur-Yvette). For example, we observe that outdoor MEs can be grouped into three clusters, where the average total E fields (ATEFs) are 0.77 V/m, 0.35 V/m, and 0.08 V/m for the MEs belonging to the first, second and third clusters, respectively. Note that the first cluster here mainly contains the MEs located in Paris. This can be explained by the important number of antennas deployed in that area to serve the huge amount of users. We also observe few locations with exceptions confirming the presence of heterogeneous environments in the vicinity of some areas. The Distribution Feature of Electromagnetic Radiation Pollution in the Nearby Region Around Cellular Base Stations

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of electromagnetic radiation pollution with attention paid increasingly from people living near the cellular base station, through 24-hour surveys and analysis of the distribution of electromagnetic field around cellular base stations, the power density change of electromagnetic fields vs. the time and distance in normal operating day and also the probability distribution of power density were studied. And based on the 24h telephone traffic in each time section, the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) was also used to analyze the correlation of this influence factor. The result showed that the electromagnetic radiation intensity near the antennae of cellular base station had obviously fluctuated character in one day, and the probability distribution of its power density approached normal distribution. The handset telephone traffic possessed definite relativity with the electromagnetic field intensity; around cellular base stations, the power density increased with distance; the peak value of power density appeared in a certain distance, and the distance was related with the height of antennae. For general urban base station in China, the environmental electromagnetic radiation is below the limits value of standard.
Surrogate modeling of indoor down-link human exposure based on sparse polynomial chaos expansion

Abstract:Human exposure induced by wireless communication systems increasingly draws the public attention. Here, an indoor down-link scenario is concerned and the exposure level is statistically analyzed. The electromagnetic field (EMF) emitted by a WiFi box is measured and electromagnetic dosimetry features are evaluated from the whole-body specific absorption rate as computed with a Finite-Difference Time-Domain (a.k.a. FDTD) code. Due to computational cost, a statistical analysis is performed based on a surrogate model, which is constructed by means of so-called sparse polynomial chaos expansion (PCE), where the inner cross validation (ICV) is used to select the optimal hyperparameters during the model construction and assess the model performance. However, the ICV error is optimized and the model assessment tends to be overly optimistic with small data sets. The method of cross-model validation is used and outer cross validation is carried out for the model assessment. The effects of the data preprocessing are investigated as well. Based on the surrogate model, the global sensitivity of the exposure to input parameters is analyzed from Sobol' indices.

Abstract:One novel dielectric conformal finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used for computing specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution over the human body model in one metallic cabin with some windows on its wall. It is based on the concept of area average, which is different from other traditional conformal FDTD schemes. Our developed algorithm is verified by calculating both point and average SARs of dielectric sphere and human head models illuminated by an intentional electromagnetic pulse (TEMP), respectively, and CST Microwave Studio (MWS) also used for validating its accuracy. Numerical calculations are further performed to show the average SAR distribution over the human body model for different TEMP incidences, where the cabin door is opened or closed. The effects of E-field amplitude, direction and polarization of the incident TEMP on the SAR distributions are characterized in detail. This study will be useful for further electromagnetic protection for some persons working in high power exposure environment.

Abstract:Installing more base stations (BSs) into the existing cellular infrastructure is an essential way to provide greater network capacity and higher data rates in the 5th-generation cellular networks (5G). However, a non-negligible amount of the population is concerned that such network densification will generate a notable increase in exposure to electric and magnetic fields (EMF) over the territory. In this paper, we analyze the downlink, uplink, and joint downlink&uplink exposure induced by the radiation from BSs and personal user equipment (UE), respectively, in terms of the received power density and exposure index. In our analysis, we consider the EMF restrictions set by the regulatory authorities such as the minimum distance between restricted areas (e.g., schools and hospitals) and BSs, and the maximum permitted exposure. Exploiting tools from stochastic geometry, mathematical expressions for the coverage probability and statistical EMF exposure are derived and validated. Tuning the system parameters such as the BS density and the minimum distance from a BS to restricted areas, we show a trade-off between reducing the population’s exposure to EMF and enhancing the network coverage performance. Then, we formulate optimization problems to maximize the performance of the EMF-aware cellular network while ensuring that the EMF exposure complies with the standard regulation limits with high probability. For instance, the exposure from BSs is two orders of magnitude less than the maximum permissible level when the density of BSs is less than 20 BSs/km2.

Abstract:In recent decades, the widespread use of mobile phones and wireless technologies has led to a significant increase in radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs), raising concerns about continuous RF-EMF exposure among the general population. Recent research indicates that real-life RF signals are more biologically active than controlled laboratory signals with a low variability, suggesting that living organisms can adapt to EMF exposure when the pattern has a low variability. However, using real-life sources with unpredictable variation signals in biological experiments contradicts the principle of experiment controllability. This paper aims to investigate the nature of signals generated by current sources of ambient EMFs in terms of stationarity, with the goal of replicating them in biological experiments to study the effects of EMF exposure. Employing a range of statistical methodologies, starting with descriptive statistical analysis and progressing to the advanced APDP and APTF methods, an examination is conducted on a collection of Wi-Fi signal recordings across various operating modes, with particular attention given to video streaming. The chosen datasets are scrutinized with respect to their adherence to a Gaussian distribution and the concept of stationarity. The results indicate that the observed Wi-Fi signals lack stationarity in both the time and frequency domains. However, based on the analytical findings, it is possible to generate signals in frequency that authentically replicate Wi-Fi signals, accounting for nonstationarity considerations.

On the Uplink and Downlink EMF Exposure and Coverage in Dense Cellular Networks: A Stochastic Geometry Approach

Abstract:Existing studies analyzing electromagnetic field (EMFE) in wireless networks have primarily considered downlink communications. In the uplink, the EMFE caused by the user's smartphone is usually the only considered source of radiation, thereby ignoring contributions caused by other active neighboring devices. In addition, the network coverage and EMFE are typically analyzed independently for both the uplink and downlink, while a joint analysis would be necessary to fully understand the network performance and answer various questions related to optimal network deployment. This paper bridges these gaps by presenting an enhanced stochastic geometry framework that includes the above aspects. The proposed topology features base stations modeled via a homogeneous Poisson point process. The users active during a same time slot are distributed according to a mixture of a Matérn cluster process and a Gauss-Poisson process, featuring groups of users possibly carrying several equipments. In this paper, we derive the marginal and meta distributions of the downlink and uplink EMFE and we characterize the uplink to downlink EMFE ratio. Moreover, we derive joint probability metrics considering the uplink and downlink coverage and EMFE. These metrics are evaluated in four scenarios considering BS, cluster and/or intracluster densifications. Our numerical results highlight the existence of optimal node densities maximizing these joint probabilities.

Real-time geometrical correction of video image using FPGA

Abstract:We present a method, implementable on a field programmable gate array (FPGA), which allows real-time correction of video image distorted by the projection on a warped screen. The method is based on projecting a reference image, consisted of a mesh of reference points, onto the screen. The projected image is then acquired using a digital camera and compared to the original one to determine the parameters of the corrective transformation. The transformation uses a backward mapping algorithm and an anti-aliasing filter. Experimental results demonstrate that the presented FPGA implementation can significantly reduce geometrical distortion.
Unveiling Passive and Active EMF Exposure in Large-Scale Cellular Networks

Abstract:With the development of fifth-generation (5G) networks, the number of user equipments (UE) increases dramatically. However, the potential health risks from electromagnetic fields (EMF) tend to be a public concern. Generally, EMF exposure-related analysis mainly considers the passive exposure from base stations (BSs) and active exposure that results from the user's personal devices while communicating. However, the passive radiation that is generated by nearby devices of other users is typically ignored. In fact, with the increase in the density of UE, their passive exposure to human bodies can no longer be ignored. In this work, we propose a stochastic geometry framework to analyze the EMF exposure from active and passive radiation sources. In particular, considering a typical user, we account for their exposure to EMF from BSs, their own UE, and other UE. We derive the distribution of the Exposure index (EI) and the coverage probability for two typical models for spatial distributions of UE, i.e., \textit{i)} a Poisson point process (PPP); \textit{ii)} a Matern cluster process. Also, we show the trade-off between the EMF exposure and the coverage probability. Our numerical results suggest that the passive exposure from other users is non-negligible compared to the exposure from BSs when user density is $10^2$ times higher than BS density, and non-negligible compared to active exposure from the user's own UE when user density is $10^5$ times the BS density.

Meta Distribution of Passive Electromagnetic Field Exposure in Cellular Networks

Abstract:This paper focuses on the meta distribution of electromagnetic field exposure (EMFE) experienced by a passive user in a cellular network implementing dynamic beamforming. The meta distribution serves as a valuable tool for extracting fine-grained insights into statistics of individual passive user EMFE across the network. A comprehensive stochastic geometry framework is established for this analysis. Given the pivotal role of accurately modeling the main and side lobes of antennas in this context, a multi-cosine gain model is introduced. The meta distribution is closely approximated by a beta distribution derived from its first- and second-order moments, which is demonstrated to be mathematically tractable. The impact of the number of antennas in the ULA on the meta distribution is explored, shedding light on its sensitivity to this parameter.

Abstract:Abstract Knowledge of the electromagnetic radiation characteristics of 5G base stations under different circumstances is useful for risk prevention, assessment, and management. This paper selects several typical scenes (Open spaces, building concentration areas, user and building intensive areas) for electromagnetic radiation monitoring, and analyzes the relationship between ambient radiated power density and base station background. The results show that the factors that have significant impacts on the environmental radiation power density of 5G base stations including transmission distance, base station distribution, user density, building reflection superposition and so on. The radiation energy decays rapidly with distance. When the density of the building distribution is too large, the superposition effect caused by the reflected wave is concentrated at the distance of 50-70 meters. When the user density decreases (the superposition effect of reflected waves decreases), the 5G monitoring value follows the direct wave attenuation law and decreases rapidly with the increase of distance. Points with higher measured radiation in the simple access condition also had higher measured radiation in the high-speed download condition. With the popularization of 5G mobile phones and the increase of user density, the resource utilization of a single user will decline to the normal operation state, and the radiation environmental impact will be further reduced.
Physics-Informed Machine Learning Modelling of RF-EMF Exposure in Massive MIMO Systems

Abstract:Beamforming and massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) technologies are key features of base stations (BSs) in the fifth-generation (5G) of mobile networks. This technology is used to focus more radio frequency (RF) energy towards actively connected users to improve their connection/performance, resulting in high variations in the radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs). This paper proposes a new methodology for modelling the RF-EMF exposure for 5G new radio (NR) mMIMO BS by means of a physics-informed machine learning (ML) approach using empirical measurement data. More precisely, the main focus of our work is to develop a suitable traceable RF-EMF exposure prediction tool in the context of 5G mMIMO BSs that can serve multiple mobile users (i.e. multiple-user MIMO (MU-MIMO)) within realistic real-world environments and scenarios. Our RF-EMF prediction tool relies on empirical measurement data acquired via a user-controllable mMIMO beamforming testbed and traceable RF-EMF measurement capability, where both indoor and outdoor RF-EMF measurement campaigns have been carried out. During the measurement campaigns various factors such as number of users, position of users and data duty cycles were considered. Using an ensemble of gradient boosted decision trees, we show that a physics-informed approach can improve predictive performance of RF-EMF compared with a purely data-driven approach, with the ability to extrapolate values of RF-EMF exposure to larger distances. Results show a coefficient of determination value of 0.86 on a 10-fold cross-validated experimental dataset. We also compare the sensitivity of RF-EMF exposure to various factors in the model, and show that model predictions become isotropic for large numbers of beam configurations, simplifying the exposure measurement methodology of 5G systems.

Abstract:This article presents a parametric statistical path loss (PL) model for wireless body area network (WBAN) communications in the context of a scenario-based approach for indoor environments. One of the specificities of WBANs is their numerous sources of variability (subject motion and morphology, antennas, local environment, and so on). We focus here on the influence of the environment, in the case of empty rooms. The model, developed for the first ultra wide band (UWB) sub-band ( [3.1, 4.8] GHz), takes into account the sizes of the rooms (assumed to be parallelepipedic and empty) and the wall characteristics (via an average reflectivity coefficient). They also involve an elaborate categorization of environments. The following methodology was implemented, to avoid time-consuming and complex experimental campaigns while still having a relatively representative and sufficient number of statistical samples: first, a simplified ray tracing (RT) code enabled a large number of different rooms to be sampled at moderate computational cost; second, part of these simulations was supported by anechoic chamber measurements; and third, the simulations were carried out using elaborate experimental designs (EDs), based on a categorization of environments and a fairly comprehensive study of building industry data. The parametric PL models obtained significantly reduce their variance.

Joint Coverage and Electromagnetic Field Exposure Analysis in Downlink and Uplink for RIS-assisted Networks

Abstract:Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have shown the potential to improve signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) related coverage, especially at high-frequency communications. However, assessing electromagnetic filed exposure (EMFE) and establishing EMFE regulations in RIS-assisted large-scale networks are still open issues. This paper proposes a framework to characterize SINR and EMFE in such networks for downlink and uplink scenarios. Particularly, we carefully consider the association rule with the presence of RISs, accurate antenna pattern at base stations (BSs), fading model, and power control mechanism at mobile devices in the system model. Under the proposed framework, we derive the marginal and joint distributions of SINR and EMFE in downlink and uplink, respectively. The first moment of EMFE is also provided. Additionally, we design the compliance distance (CD) between a BS/RIS and a user to comply with the EMFE regulations. To facilitate efficient identification, we further provide approximate closed-form expressions for CDs. From numerical results of the marginal distributions, we find that in the downlink scenario, deploying RISs may not always be beneficial, as the improved SINR comes at the cost of increased EMFE. However, in the uplink scenario, RIS deployment is promising to enhance coverage while still maintaining EMFE compliance. By simultaneously evaluating coverage and compliance metrics through joint distributions, we demonstrate the feasibility of RISs in improving uplink and downlink performance. Insights from this framework can contribute to establishing EMFE guidelines and achieving a balance between coverage and compliance when deploying RISs.

Abstract:Current radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure limits have become a critical concern for fifth-generation (5G) mobile network deployment. Regulation is not harmonized and in certain countries and regions it goes beyond the guidelines set out by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). Using a massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) testbed with beamforming capabilities that is capable of mimicking realistic 5G base station (BS) performance, this paper presents an experimental and statistical assessment of its associated RF-EMF exposure within a real-world indoor environment. The mMIMO testbed has up to 128 channels with user-programmable software defined radio (SDR) capability. It could perform zero-forcing precoding after channel state information (CSI) acquisition for different beamforming scenarios with respect to the associated user terminal antenna setups and positions. With 64 active mMIMO transmit antennas, 8 beamforming scenarios have been considered for single-user (SU) and multi-user (MU) downlink communications at different locations. Using a calibrated triaxial isotropic field-probe, the received channel power heat map for each beamforming scenario was acquired and then converted into an RF-EMF heat map. The relevant RF-EMF statistics was evaluated based on the variations of beam profiles and number of users.

Abstract:In order to achieve an integrated radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) dose assessment, detailed information about source-specific exposure duration and output power is needed. We developed an Integrated Exposure Model (IEM) to combine energy absorbed due to use of and exposure to RF-EMF sources and applied it to a sample of the general population to derive population RF-EMF estimates. The IEM used specific absorption rate transfer algorithms to provide RF-EMF daily dose estimates (mJ/kg/day) using source-specific attributes (e.g. output power, distance), personal characteristics and usage patterns. Information was obtained from an international survey performed in four European countries with 1755 participants. We obtained median whole-body and whole-brain doses of 183.7 and 204.4 mJ/kg/day. Main contributors to whole-brain dose were mobile phone near the head for calling (2G networks) and far-field sources, whereas the latter together with multiple other RF-EMF sources were main contributors for whole-body dose. For other anatomical sites, 2G phone calls, mobile data and far-field exposure were important contributors. The IEM provides insight into main contributors to total RF-EMF dose and, applied to an international survey, provides an estimate of population RF-dose. The IEM can be used in future epidemiological studies, risk assessments and exposure reduction strategies.

Joint Metrics for EMF Exposure and Coverage in Real-World Homogeneous and Inhomogeneous Cellular Networks

Abstract:This paper evaluates the downlink performance of cellular networks in terms of coverage and electromagnetic field exposure (EMFE), in the framework of stochastic geometry. The model is constructed based on datasets for sub-6~GHz macro cellular networks but it is general enough to be applicable to millimeter-wave networks as well. On the one hand, performance metrics are calculated for $\beta$-Ginibre point processes which are shown to faithfully model a large number of motion-invariant networks. On the other hand, performance metrics are derived for inhomogeneous Poisson point processes with a radial intensity measure, which are shown to be a good approximation for motion-variant networks. For both cases, joint and marginal distributions of the EMFE and the coverage, and the first moments of the EMFE are provided and validated by Monte Carlo simulations using realistic sets of parameters from two sub-6~GHz macro urban cellular networks, i.e., 5G~NR~2100 (Paris, France) and LTE~1800 (Brussels, Belgium) datasets. In addition, this paper includes the analysis of the impact of the network parameters and discusses the achievable trade-off between coverage and EMFE.

Abstract:Exposure to the Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) generated from cellular antennas is a topic of importance, and even more so since the arrival of 5G and the promise of a future with denser deployments. In this paper, we describe the planning and execution of EMF measurements in Luxembourg and the lessons learned from that process. We describe the specifics of Luxembourg, how the pilot sites as well as the measuring devices have been selected. We also discuss the results of the measurements from fixed and mobile devices, with regard to the regulatory limits. Finally, we describe the facts that limit the short-term deployment of devices and the difficulties to measure 5G exposition. All the datasets collected for this study are proposed as open-source format.

Abstract:At the awakening of the new 5G network as the network of services, issues related to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) will become one of the key aspects for the cost-effective establishment of the 5G infrastructure. The new 5G services will meet the rigorous demand for bandwidth through the implementation of a large number of densely located base stations operating in the millimeter-wave range. Introduction of new emission sources, working in parallel with already existing 2G/3G/4G mobile technologies, raises concerns about exceeding the admissible EMF exposure limits. This paper analyzes issues and challenges related to EMF measurements in 5G technology, which are crucial for the assessment of EMF compliance with regulatory limits. We point out that the existing methodologies, dedicated to EMF measurements in 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, are not suitable for 5G. The reason is the use of new techniques, such as massive MIMO and precise beamforming together with higher frequency bands so that the existing measurement methods can lead to significantly overestimated results when they will be applied to 5G networks. Such results, in conjunction with the restrictive legislation on the EMF limits that apply in some countries, may have the negative impact on 5G network deployment, making it difficult to achieve the intended 5G network capabilities. We also propose an alternative method of EMF exposure assessment that is based on calculations and simulations and allows obtaining an accurate estimation of the EMF distribution in the 5G environment.
