Abstract:The stability of the shafts connecting underground mineral resources with the surface can directly affect the efficiency and operational safety of mining operations. In this study, factors affecting shaft stability are analyzed, and eight evaluation indexes are summarized. Compared with single weighting methods, a combination weighting method based on the sum of squared deviations can improve the accuracy of weighting the evaluation indexes. First, the indexes are subjectively weighted using an analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and the objective weights are calculated according to the criteria importance through intercriteria correlation (CRITIC). Then, the combined weights are calculated based on the maximum sum of squared deviations. The preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluation (PROMETHEE) II decision-making algorithm is then used to transform the shaft stability evaluation into a multi-attribute group decision-making problem. The algorithm is verified by seven coal mine shaft cases in eastern China, and the algorithm achieves an accuracy of 100%. Furthermore, the influence of the Gaussian preference function, linear preference function, and 0–1 preference function on the performance of PROMETHEE II decision-making algorithm is analyzed. The Gaussian preference function is shown to be superior.

Abstract:Coal mine safety is a complex system, which is controlled by a number of interrelated factors and is difficult to estimate. This paper proposes an index system of safety assessment based on correlated factors involved in coal mining and a comprehensive evaluation model that combines the advantages of the AHP and a grey clustering method to guarantee the accuracy and objectivity of weight coefficients. First, we confirmed the weight of every index using the AHP, then did a general safety assessment by means of a grey clustering method. This model analyses the status of mining safety both qualitatively and quantitatively. It keeps management and technical groups informed of the situation of the coal production line in real time, which aids in making correct decisions based on practical safety issues. A case study in the application of the model is presented. The results show that the method is applicable and realistic with regard to the core of a coal mine's safety management. Consequently, the safe production of a mine and the awareness of advanced safe production management is accelerated.

Abstract:The exploitation of coal resources will bring about a series of environmental problems, which will not only affect the surface ecological environment of the region, seriously threatening underground resources, but will also affect the normal production and living activities of human beings. The impacted ecological system is combined by both overground and underground features. In this paper, Shendong coal field, one of the high-strength coal mining areas in western China is used as a research area. An O-U (Overground-Underground) analysis framework and model was established to quantitatively assess the degree of mining impact on the eco-system and its resilience. The entropy method is used to calculate the weight of each index, and the comprehensive value of each grid is calculated by the linear weighted method. The comprehensive value of each grid's indicators is divided into four ecological resilience (ER) partitions by natural breakpoint method. Finally, Pearson coefficients is used to analyze the main influencing factors of the four sub-areas, and reasonable suggestions are given. By zoning the ER of the study area, it can provide reference for the mining method selection and land reclamation measures, and also provide direction for the ecological environment management in other similar areas.

Abstract:At present, the frequent occurrence of coal mine accidents in China is a key concern in the field of safety. Although the coal mine accident rate is decreasing due to the progress of technology and the improvement of management, there is still a lack of comprehensive evaluation of the role of various factors in the coal mine. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish a game theory combination weight-TOPSIS comprehensive evaluation model based on the analysis of various factors affecting coal mine safety. The model combines the weights obtained from fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP), entropy weight method (EWM), and back propagation neural network (BP-NN) by using the combination method of game theory and then combines with the TOPSIS method to evaluate 20 indicators in four aspects of a coal mine: personnel, equipment, environment, and management. Taking five mines under Zheng Coal Group as an example, the evaluation results of the game theory combination weight-TOPSIS comprehensive evaluation model are compared with those of the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and the improved composite weight-TOPSIS method. The results show that the safety grade of the five mine samples under Zhengmei Group is ranked as follows: mine 4 > grade II (relatively safe) > mine 2 > mine 5 > grade III (moderately safe) > mine 3 > mine 1 > grade IV (generally safe). The evaluation result of the game theory combination weight-TOPSIS method is basically consistent with the actual safety situation of the coal mine, which reflects the superiority and practicality of the evaluation model. The model has greater differentiation in the process of determining the coal mine safety grade, and the evaluation results are more intuitive and reasonable, which can provide a more effective evaluation tool for the comprehensive evaluation of coal mine safety. Finally, based on the evaluation results, corresponding policy recommendations to improve the status quo of coal mine safety are proposed, aiming to provide decision-making reference for coal mine safety management personnel.

Abstract:To prevent coal mine roof water damage, the water generally needs to be evacuated in advance. It can be mined with the water inrush risk assessed as safe. However, a single index is often employed in the water safety evaluation after the roof drainage, which causes a large gap between the evaluation results and the actual situation. Therefore, the evaluation cannot be effectively used to guide the safety mining in the working face. In this paper, based on the hydrogeological data of the Liangshuijing coal mine, a multifactor water inrush risk assessment model (IAHP-EWM) and multifactor index system are established for assessing the water inrush risk before and after the roof drainage. The improved AHP method and the entropy weight method are adopted in the model to determine the index weight. This combined way avoids the excessive subjectivity and objectivity of the index weight. A′′ Fold undulation degree ( )′′ is innovatively proposed to quantify the impact of the spatial relief of folds on water inrush in the multifactor index system. The IAHP-EWM model is applied to evaluate the risk of roof water inrush in the 42205 working face of the Liangshuijing coal mine. The evaluation results show that the water inrush risk is ′′high′′ when the water is not dredged, and the water inrush risk is ′′low′′ after the water is dredged, which are consistent with the actual water inflow data and evaluation results, which verifies the accuracy of the model. The application results of the IAHP-EWM model in the 42202, 42203, and 42204 working faces verify its universal applicability in the Liangshuijing mining area. It can provide a reference for the evaluation of the roof water damage control effect during coal seam mining.

Abstract:The assessment of coal burst risk is a complex and systematic process; the variations among the indicator systems and the stability of the evaluation models used can influence the results. In this study, an index system for the analytic hierarchy process was constructed based on 21 geomechanically influential factors on rock bursts. The multi-weight combination optimization model was used to synthesize the subjective weights derived by the four experts using AHP and the objective weights derived through the inter-criteria correlation method to obtain the unique optimization weights. After normalizing the original evaluation data, the Gram–Schmidt orthogonalization method was employed to eliminate correlations among factors. The optimized factor weights and data were subsequently input into a linearly weighted comprehensive evaluation model to determine the coal burst risk. The proposed method was applied to assess the coal burst risk of a coal seam in the Liang Jia Coal Mine. These results align with those of the actual coal mine scenario. Indeed, the proposed linear weighted comprehensive evaluation model provided enhanced accuracy and reliability with improved practicality compared to previously proposed methods.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive quantitative approach for managing safety in coal mines with a multicriteria decision-making model by using fuzzy mathematics. We develop a set of factors that affect the management of safety in coal mines, including ventilation, the mine roof, and mine temperature. The factors also include mine dust, mining gas, and mining water. Other factors are equipment reliability, explosive risk of equipment, maintenance of equipment, staff operations and staff training, staff attendance, index to evaluate and manage workload, and project quality, monitoring systems, and safety information. The approach is then applied to evaluate a case study on the safety management of the Fushan Coal Industry Co., Ltd. Coal Mine in Henan Province of China. The matrix that evaluates each factor is obtained through a membership function and scored by experts, and the weight of each attribute is obtained through an analytic hierarchy process. The evaluation results show that the Fushan Coal Industry Co., Ltd. Coal Mine overall has a good safety track record. However, the mine needs to further enhance how they manage safety, optimize the mine ventilation system, and further strengthen safety management practices to ensure the safety of production processes in the mine.

Abstract:China is a major coal producer, with huge differences in coal production and safety situations between the South and the North. Taking province A as an example, its coal enterprises have low output, poor efficiency, backward equipment, and low-quality personnel. The output accounts for 0.08% of the country, and the number of deaths accounts for 2.2% of the country, the safety situation of coal enterprises in province A is severe. In order to study the safety risk situation of coal mines under difficult conditions, this paper screens 98 factor indexes including multiple subjects such as enterprise managers, front-line workers, government supervisors, external environment, work quality, stress factors, economic factors, and other dimensions. For different data, the indicator weights were calculated using triangular fuzzy number, entropy weight method, CRITIC method, and three rough set methods in a total of six methods. The comprehensive weights of the indicators were obtained using the proposed new comprehensive weight method. The current situation of safety work of four coal mining enterprises and three levels of government supervision departments was evaluated, and the evaluation results were compared with other existing data to verify the reliability of the evaluation system. The horizontal comparison of the evaluation results indicates the main problems of each subject; the longitudinal comparison points out the problems that need to be solved with the assistance of higher-level enterprises and the central government, and corresponding suggestions for coal mining enterprises and government departments are put forward to reduce the safety risks of troubled coal mining enterprises.

Abstract:In order to scientifically and rationally assess the safety condition of coal mine production logistics system, this paper establishes a risk assessment model of coal mine production logistics system based on BWM-Vague set. On the basis of reviewing a large amount of literature and combining the main contributing factors of coal mine production safety accidents in practice, a relatively complete set of safety evaluation index system for coal mine production and logistics system was established, including 4 primary indexes of personnel safety, machine and equipment safety, environmental safety and management safety, and 16 secondary indexes such as the proportion of professional and technical personnel, and the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was applied to evaluate the index system. Firstly, the BWM assignment method is used to determine the weights of each index, after which Vague set theory is introduced and experts are invited to evaluate and score each index, and then the two are combined to determine the final comprehensive evaluation. Finally, the model was empirically tested in the context of a coal mine enterprise in Beijing, with a view to improving the safety of the production logistics system in coal mines.

Abstract:Improving the emergency response effectiveness of coal mines in response to water hazard accidents not only plays a vital part in minimizing the resultant losses, but also functions as an important index for evaluating the emergency response capability of coal mines. Therefore, it is of great necessity to test the emergency response capability of coal mines. In this study, an effectiveness measurement index system for the emergency response system that comprises two primary indexes (i.e., response capability and service capability) and six secondary indexes (i.e., accident information transmission, emergency command and control, emergency rescue and mitigation, emergency management, personnel team, and prevention and preparation) was constructed. Additionally, a technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) model for evaluating the effectiveness of the integral emergency response system for coal mine water hazard accidents, based on combination weighting, was put forward. Both the empirical evaluation and model validation of the emergency response system for water hazard accidents were carried out by taking five coal mines attached to Henan Coking Coal Group as research objects. The findings suggest that the effectiveness of the emergency response system for water hazard accidents in the Guhanshan Coal Mine and the Zhongmachun Coal Mine is rated as "average", while those in the Jiulishan Coal Mine, Zhaogu No. 1 Coal Mine, and Zhaogu No. 2 Coal Mine are graded as "good". This result is consistent with the actual situation, which verifies the capacity of the proposed TOPSIS model to evaluate the emergency response system scientifically and efficiently for coal mine water hazard accidents. This study not only offers new ideas for how to enhance the comprehensive emergency response capability of coal mines with respect to water hazard accidents, but also provides support for making decisions concerning the upgrading of the emergency response capacity of coal mines.

Abstract:As coal mining is extended to ever-greater depths, the factors affecting the safe mining of coal seams are becoming increasingly complicated. High-pressure confined water in the coal seam floor can pose a major threat to the safety of coal mining. Therefore, based on the analysis of various factors that affect water inrush from coal seam floors, this study develops a geological engineering model of high-pressure confined water damage assessment for coal mine face floors. The model adopts six evaluation factors: coal mining depth, coal seam thickness, thickness of the aquiclude, hydrostatic pressure, brittle-rock thickness, and the distribution of faults and folds. The comprehensive weight of the six factors is obtained through analytic hierarchy processing (AHP) and the entropy weight method (EWM) to establish an AHP–EW risk index model (AEM). AEM is applied for the evaluation of two coalfaces in a study area in North China, and the water inrush risk zonation of the coalface floors is determined. Finally, the results given with AEM are compared with those from the traditional water inrush coefficient method, and its applicability in other mining areas is also validated. The results show that the proposed model provides more accurate evaluation results than the traditional method and that its application is more practical.

Abstract:A risk assessment method for hot work based on G1-EWM and unascertained measurement theory was proposed to prevent hot work accidents in underground mines. Firstly, based on the risk influencing factors and classification criteria for underground hot work operations in mines, a single indicator measurement matrix was constructed using unascertained measurement theory; Secondly, a risk assessment index system for mine underground hot work operations was established. The combination weight coefficient of each index was determined using the order relationship analysis method (G1) and entropy weight method (EWM) and coupled with the single index measurement evaluation vector to calculate the multi-index comprehensive evaluation vector of the evaluation object; Finally, the model was validated and examined using engineering examples, and the evaluation level was determined using confidence identification criteria. The results showed that the proposed method, when used to evaluate the risk of hot work operations in tunnels and vertical shafts in metal mines, produces risk levels that are in line with reality III (Moderate Risk) for the vertical shaft and IV (High Risk) for the tunnels. The evaluation model results are consistent with the risk evaluation results the whole process of on-site hot work, which verifies the model feasibility. A unique strategy and method for risk management in hot work operations in underground mines is provided by the combination of weighting and unascertained measure models, which has theoretical and practical value. Future research could focus on refineing this model by exploring the applicability in diverse mining environments and integrating advanced analytical techniques to enhance the predictive accuracy and operational efficiency.

Abstract:Water inrush from coal-seam floors greatly threatens mining safety in North China and is a complex process controlled by multiple factors. This study presents a mathematical assessment system for coal-floor water-inrush risk based on the variable-weight model (VWM) and unascertained measure theory (UMT). In contrast to the traditional constant-weight model (CWM), which assigns a fixed weight to each factor, the VWM varies with the factor-state value. The UMT employs the confidence principle, which is more effective in ordered partition problems than the maximum membership principle adopted in the former mathematical theory. The method is applied to the Datang Tashan Coal Mine in North China. First, eight main controlling factors are selected to construct the comprehensive evaluation index system. Subsequently, an incentive-penalty variable-weight model is built to calculate the variable weights of each factor. Then, the VWM-UMT model is established using the quantitative risk-grade divide of each factor according to the UMT. On this basis, the risk of coal-floor water inrush in Tashan Mine No. 8 is divided into five grades. For comparison, the CWM is also adopted for the risk assessment, and a differences distribution map is obtained between the two methods. Finally, the verification of water-inrush points indicates that the VWM-UMT model is powerful and more feasible and reasonable. The model has great potential and practical significance in future engineering applications.

Abstract:The complex hydrogeological conditions of China’s coal fields and the frequent water inrush accidents there seriously threaten the safe mining of coal. A new risk evaluation model for water inrushes from seam floors was constructed by combining the established evaluation index system with set pair analysis (SPA), thereby integrating quantitative and qualitative indexes. The resultant model reflects both the factors affecting water inrush from the seam floor and the uncertainty in the parameter values for those factors. To demonstrate the value of this model, the risk of water inrush from the seam floor was assessed for the working face of a mine in Tongzi county, Guizhou province, China. The prediction obtained from the model conformed to the actual conditions. Moreover, the methodology provides a basis for water inrush risk assessment from seam floors.

Abstract:In order to prevent accident cases and improve safety in the mining industry, a safety risk assessment and management process is needed to identify and respond to high-risk hazards in mines. This study aims to investigate the main safety risks factors influencing the typology of accidents in the Panzhihua OP-UG iron ore mine with the concept of minimizing them, reducing injuries and fatalities, and improving prevention policies. A methodology based on the analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (AHP-FCE) is applied to conduct a study on the assessment and evaluation of mine safety risks. Upon investigating the safety situation at the mine site, 85 risk factors were identified, of which 49 factors were considered to be non-threatening and therefore compatible with existing control measures. The remaining potential hazards, altogether 36 factors, were ultimately categorized into six major specific groups. A mine safety index system and safety risk evaluation model are established to support the evaluation process. The results show that the overall risk level of the Panzhihua OP-UG iron mine is at a medium level with a score of 86.5%. Appropriate risk management measures were recommended for each risk factor from the perspectives of theoretical analysis, safety system optimization of mine technology, disaster prevention and control of slope failure, etc. Finally, this research serves as a great industrial value and academic significance to provide technical support for the safety production of mining enterprises. Hence, the FCE method can serve as a technique to accurately evaluate the impact of iron mine risk.

Assessment of coal mining land subsidence by using an innovative comprehensive weighted cloud model combined with a PSR conceptual model

Abstract:Research on land subsidence is a global topic. In recent years, the environmental problems caused by coal mining have received great attention. In particular, mining land subsidence caused damage to villages, buildings, farmland, etc., which seriously threatened the mining area's living environment and ecological environment. This study proposes a pressure-state-response concept model based on mining land subsidence to build an evaluation index system in coal mines. Based on this index system, given the uncertainty in the evaluation process, the cloud model is used to represent the index weight and comprehensive evaluation calculations, which fully consider the randomness and ambiguity in the evaluation process. The mining land subsidence of several mining areas in China was evaluated and classified into three grades (slight-medium-strong). The cloud model assessment results are compared with the result of the probability integration method and the actual situation. The assessment results of the cloud model are closer to the actual situation than the probability integration method. This shows that the established mining land subsidence evaluation method based on the cloud model in this study is reasonable and feasible. The mining width and height ratio, depth and height ratio, and coal seam dip angle affect mining land subsidence. Therefore, improving the mining method to deal with the goaf reasonably and optimizing the mining design to control the influence range of mining are essential measures to reduce mining land subsidence and protect the ecological environment of mining areas.

Abstract:The unsafe behavior of miners seriously affects the safety of deep mining. A comprehensive evaluation of miners' unsafe behavior in deep coal mines can prevent coal mine accidents. This study combines HFACS-CM, SEM, and SD models to evaluate miners' unsafe behaviors in deep coal mining. First, the HFACS-CM model identifies the risk factors affecting miners' unsafe behavior in deep coal mines. Second, SEM was used to analyze the interaction between risk factors and miners' unsafe behavior. Finally, the SD model was used to simulate the sensitivity of each risk factor to miners' unsafe behavior to explore the best prevention and control strategies for unsafe behavior. The results showed that (1) environmental factors, organizational influence, unsafe supervision, and unsafe state of miners are the four main risk factors affecting the unsafe behavior of miners in deep coal mines. Among them, the unsafe state of miners is the most critical risk factor. (2) Environmental factors, organizational influence, unsafe supervision, and the unsafe state of miners have both direct and indirect impacts on unsafe behaviors, and their immediate effects are far more significant than their indirect influence. (3) Environmental factors, organizational influence, and unsafe supervision positively impact miners' unsafe behavior through the mediating effect of miners' unsafe states. (4) Mental state, physiological state, business abilities, resource management, and organizational climate were the top five risk factors affecting miners' unsafe behaviors. Taking measures to improve the adverse environmental factors, strengthening the organization's supervision and management, and improving the unsafe state of miners can effectively reduce the risk of miners' unsafe behavior in deep coal mines. This study provides a new idea and method for preventing and controlling the unsafe behavior of miners in deep coal mines.

Abstract:Hazard identification, risk assessment and management are of great significance for the safe and efficient production of industrial system. However, due to the lack of quantitative methods, the production of industrial systems still lacks safety guarantees. Firstly, we revise the accident causation model of mining industry based on the “Swiss-Cheese” model and construct a three-dimensional multi-granular structure model applied to the mining industry. To identify hazards of mining industry, a multi-layer hierarchical structure model and a system safety assessment model are established according to finite covering theorem. Then, the hazard identification is carried out based on the multi-layer hierarchical model and the risk matrix method, and a quantitative method is proposed to calculate the process indicators. Subsequently, the weighted grey relational analysis method is used for risk assessment on the driving system in mining industry. To improve the safety level of the driving system, the Hazard Identification-Assessment-Check-Action risk closed-loop management mode is used for risk management in the purpose of obtaining hazard rectification measures. Risk assessment is carried out again after risk rectification, and the safety level of the driving system can reach higher level. This research can provide guidance for the process safety improvement of industrial systems.
