Abstract:Optical sensing techniques offer an instant estimation of leaf nitrogen (N) concentration during the crop growing season. Differences in plant-moisture status, however, can obscure the detection of differences in N levels. This study presents a vegetation index that robustly measures differences in foliar N levels across a range of plant moisture levels. A controlled glasshouse study with maize (Zea mays L.) subjected to both water and N regimes was conducted in Ottawa, Canada. The purpose of the study was to identify spectral waveband(s), or indices derived from different wavebands, such as the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), that are capable of detecting variations in leaf N concentration in response to different water and N stresses. The experimental design includes three N rates and three water regimes in a factorial arrangement. Leaf chlorophyll content and spectral reflectance (400–1075 nm) were measured on the uppermost fully expanded leaves at the V6, V9 and V12 growth stages (6th, 9th and 12th leaves fully expanded). N concentrations of the same leaves were determined using destructive sampling. A quantitative relationship between leaf N concentration and the normalised chlorophyll index (normalised to well fertilised and well irrigated plants) was established. Leaf N concentration was also a linear function (R2 = 0.9, P < 0.01) of reflectance index (NDVI550, 760) at the V9 and V12 growth stages. Chlorophyll index increased with N nutrition, but decreased with water stress. Leaf reflectance at wavebands of 550 ± 5 nm and 760 ± 5 nm were able to separate water- and N-stressed plants from normal growing plants with sufficient water and N supply. Our results suggest that NDVI550, 760 and normalised chlorophyll index hold promise for the assessment of leaf N concentration at the leaf level of both normal and water-stressed maize plants.
Multiscale physiological responses to nitrogen supplementation of maize hybrids

Abstract:Maize (Zea mays) production systems are heavily reliant on the provision of managed inputs such as fertilizers to maximize growth and yield. Hence, the effective use of nitrogen (N) fertilizer is crucial to minimize the associated financial and environmental costs, as well as maximize yield. However, how to effectively utilize N inputs for increased grain yields remains a substantial challenge for maize growers that requires a deeper understanding of the underlying physiological responses to N fertilizer application. We report a multiscale investigation of five field-grown maize hybrids under low or high N supplementation regimes that includes the quantification of phenolic and prenyl-lipid compounds, cellular ultrastructural features, and gene expression traits at three developmental stages of growth. Our results reveal that maize perceives the lack of supplemented N as a stress and, when provided with additional N, will prolong vegetative growth. However, the manifestation of the stress and responses to N supplementation are highly hybrid-specific. Eight genes were differentially expressed in leaves in response to N supplementation in all tested hybrids and at all developmental stages. These genes represent potential biomarkers of N status and include two isoforms of Thiamine Thiazole Synthase involved in vitamin B1 biosynthesis. Our results uncover a detailed view of the physiological responses of maize hybrids to N supplementation in field conditions that provides insight into the interactions between management practices and the genetic diversity within maize.
Comparison of Various Nitrogen and Water Dual Stress Effects for Predicting Relative Water Content and Nitrogen Content in Maize Plants through Hyperspectral Imaging

Abstract:Water and nitrogen (N) are major factors in plant growth and agricultural production. However, these are often confounded and produce overlapping symptoms of plant stress. The objective of this study is to verify whether the different levels of N treatment influence water status prediction and vice versa with hyperspectral modeling. We cultivated 108 maize plants in a greenhouse under three-level N treatments in combination with three-level water treatments. Hyperspectral images were collected from those plants, then Relative Water Content (RWC), as well as N content, was measured as ground truth. A Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression analysis was used to build prediction models for RWC and N content. Then, their accuracy and robustness were compared according to the different N treatment datasets and different water treatment datasets, respectively. The results demonstrated that the PLS prediction for RWC using hyperspectral data was impacted by N stress difference (Ratio of Performance to Deviation; RPD from 0.87 to 2.27). Furthermore, the dataset with water and N dual stresses improved model accuracy and robustness (RPD from 1.69 to 2.64). Conversely, the PLS prediction for N content was found to be robust against water stress difference (RPD from 2.33 to 3.06). In conclusion, we suggest that water and N dual treatments can be helpful in building models with wide applicability and high accuracy for evaluating plant water status such as RWC.

Abstract:The hyperspectral reflectances of different organs (including leaves, stem) and corresponding nitrogen contents of different species of maize were measured in the experiment. The correlation among raw hyperspectral reflectance, hyperspectral characteristic variables, RVI, NDVI and chlorophyll contents were analyzed. The results show that the raw spectral reflectance has the maximum negative correlation coefficient at 716 nm (r = -0.847) with nitrogen contents and the logarithm model constructed with reflectance at this point is the better one as compared to linear model; the first derivative spectral reflectance has the maximum positive correlation coefficient at 759 nm (r = 0.944) and the linear and non-linear models have the similar capacity for the nitrogen estimation; as to hyperspectral characteristic variables, they all show significant correlation with nitrogen contents except λy, SDr/SDy and (SDr + SDy)/(SDr-SDy). Those results indicate that the variables adopt in this paper have great potential for nitrogen content estimation. By the precision evaluation of estimation models, the logarithm models constructed by the first derivative reflectance at 759 nm was proved to be the best for the estimation of maize nitrogen contents.

Abstract:Site-specific variable nitrogen application is one of the major operations in precision crop production management. Estimating crop nitrogen stress accurately during side-dressing operations is essential for managing site-specific nitrogen applications effectively. Various off-line assessing methods of nitrogen stress, such as aerial images of the field, crop tissue analysis, soil sampling analysis and soil plant analysis development (SPAD) meter readings of crop leaf, have been applied in current site-specific crop production management. To support a machinery-mounted multi-spectral imaging sensor to detect nitrogen stress during side-dressing operations, a neural-network model was created to estimate maize leaf SPAD values based on the sensed reflectance of maize canopy in three channels of green (G), red (R) and near-infrared (NIR) of a multi-spectral charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. Based on results obtained from both off-line post-processing and real-time field tests, it was verified that the developed neural-network model was capable of extracting stress information with reasonable accuracy in real-time in terms of sensed crop canopy reflectance in G, R and NIR channels. The coefficient of determination r(2) between estimated and measured SPAD values was 0.89 and a root mean square (RMS) error of 2.52 was observed from validation tests. (c) 2006 IAgrE. Abstract:Abstract There is an urgent need for suitable nitrogen nutrition models for Southwest China, which take into account nutritional differences at the cultivar level, to provide scientific guidance for cultivar-specific fertilizer applications during maize production. In this study, the nitrogen-efficient maize cultivar Zhenghong 311 and the nitrogen-inefficient maize cultivar Xianyu 508 were used in a three-year field experiment and a 2-year field pot experiment with nitrogen application rates ranging from 0 to 450 kg·hm −2 to construct a critical nitrogen dilution curve model for each maize cultivar. The usefulness of this model to diagnose nitrogen status and evaluate maize fertilization needs was subsequently analyzed. We found that the critical nitrogen concentration in maize aboveground tissues was a power function of the biomass, described by the equations N c = 26.126 W −0.292 and N c = 25.826 W −0.302 for ZH 311 and XY 508 cultivars, respectively. The fitting degree of these equations was significant or highly significant, demonstrating the suitability of these models to diagnose N deficiency and fertilization needs in maize plants grown in the hilly areas of central Sichuan. A very significant linear positive correlation between the nitrogen nutrient index (NNI) and nitrogen concentration in the aboveground tissues was detected. Based on this, we calculated the nitrogen concentration (Nt) for an NNI equal to 1 at different maize growth stages in both cultivars and observed that the Nt value can be used as a reference index for nitrogen nutrition diagnosis. Additionally, we found a highly significant quadratic convex function relationship between the NNI ( y ) and the nitrogen fertilizer level ( x ). The following regression equations were derived for these maize cultivars with the data obtained from each growth period along five consecutive years (2011–2015): y ZH 311 = − 0.000005 x 2 + 0.003074 x + 0.553206 ( R 2 = 0.5432**) and y XY 508 = − 0.000004 x 2 + 0.002914 x + 0.512555 ( R 2 = 0.6279**). For an NNI value equal to 1, the nitrogen application level required was 224.07 kg·hm −2 for ZH 311 and 283.01 kg·hm −2 for XY 508, indicating that the suitable application rate for the nitrogen-efficient cultivar is lower than that for the nitrogen-inefficient cultivar. Our experimental data reinforce the concept that selecting nitrogen-efficient maize cultivars is an effective technical measure to reduce nitrogen input needs and increase nitrogen use efficiency during maize production.

Study on the Estimation of Nitrogen Content in Wheat and Maize Canopy Based on Band Optimization of Spectral Parameters

Abstract:Nitrogen fertilizer plays a crucial role in keeping food production in pace with population growth. However, the exceeding application of nitrogen fertilizer causes environmental risks. Timely and accurate quantification of canopy nitrogen content in crops is important for the rational application of nitrogen fertilizer and reduction environmental risks. The current research aimed to remotely estimate canopy nitrogen content in winter wheat and summer maize. Experiments with different N rates for different cultivars of wheat and maize were conducted in southeast Germany and in the North China Plain from 2008 to 2011. The results showed that, compared with traditional red light based spectral parameters, optimized spectral parameters significantly improved the prediction capacity, overcoming saturation problem in deriving canopy nitrogen content of wheat and maize. Band combination of optimized parameters varied with the difference in species and canopy structure of crops. The optimized bands concentrated on 730~760 and 760~800 nm. The best performing spectral parameter was Rλ766/Rλ738-1 for maize, Rλ796/Rλ760-1 for wheat and Rλ876/Rλ730-1 for wheat and maize combination. The validation results further confirmed that the optimized spectral parameters had the lowest predictive error, indicating that optimized spectral indices could estimate canopy nitrogen content of crops. In conclusion, the band optimization of spectral parameters is a promising approach to derive canopy N content in wheat and maize. The findings from this study may be useful for designing improved nitrogen diagnosis systems and for enhancing the applications of satellite-based sensors.
Improved Spectral Detection of Nitrogen Deficiency and Yellow Mosaic Disease Stresses in Wheat Using a Soil Effect Removal Algorithm and Machine Learning

Abstract:Wheat yellow mosaic disease is a low-temperature and soil-borne disease. Crop infection by the yellow mosaic virus can lead to severe yield and economic losses. It is easily confused with nitrogen deficiency based on the plant's morphological characteristics. Timely disease detection and crop management in the field require the precise identification of crop stress types. However, the detection of crop stress is often underappreciated. Wheat nitrogen deficiency and yellow mosaic disease were investigated in the field and wheat physiological and biochemical experiments were conducted to collect agronomic indicators, four years of reflectance spectral data at green-up and jointing were collected, and then studies for the detection of nitrogen deficiency and yellow mosaic disease stresses were carried out. The continuous removal (CR), first-order derivative (FD), standard normal variate (SNV), and spectral separation of soil and vegetation (3SV) preprocessing methods and 96 spectral indices were evaluated. The threshold method and variance inflation factor (TVIF) were used as feature selection methods combined with machine learning to develop a crop stress detection method. The results show that the most sensitive wavelengths are found in the 725–1000 nm region, while the sensitivity of the spectrum in the 400–725 nm region is lower. The PRI670,570, B, and RARSa spectral indices can detect nitrogen deficiency and yellow leaf disease stress, and the OA and Kappa values are 93.87% and 0.873, respectively, for PRI670,570, which is the best index. A 3SV-TVIF-SVM stress detection method was then proposed, using OA and Kappa values of 96.97% and 0.931, respectively, for field data validation. The results of the study can provide technical support and a theoretical basis for the accurate control of yellow mosaic disease and nitrogen fertilizer management in the field.

Abstract:Global climate change and the spread of COVID-19 have caused widespread concerns about food security. The development of smart agriculture could contribute to food security; moreover, the targeted and accurate management of crop nitrogen is a topic of concern in the field of smart agriculture. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) spectroscopy has demonstrated versatility in the rapid and non-destructive estimation of nitrogen in summer maize. Previous studies focused on the entire growth season or early stages of summer maize; however, systematic studies on the diagnosis of nitrogen that consider the entire life cycle are few. This study aimed to: (1) construct a practical diagnostic model of the nitrogen life cycle of summer maize based on ground hyperspectral data and UAV multispectral sensor data and (2) evaluate this model and express a change in the trend of nitrogen nutrient status at a spatiotemporal scale. Here, a comprehensive data set consisting of a time series of crop biomass, nitrogen concentration, hyperspectral reflectance, and UAV multispectral reflectance from field experiments conducted during the growing seasons of 2017–2019 with summer maize cultivars grown under five different nitrogen fertilization levels in Beijing, China, were considered. The results demonstrated that the entire life cycle of summer maize was divided into four stages, viz., V6 (mean leaf area index (LAI) = 0.67), V10 (mean LAI = 1.94), V12 (mean LAI = 3.61), and VT-R6 (mean LAI = 3.94), respectively; moreover, the multi-index synergy model demonstrated high accuracy and good stability. The best spectral indexes of these four stages were GBNDVI, TCARI, NRI, and MSAVI2, respectively. The thresholds of the spectral index of nitrogen sufficiency in the V6, V10, V12, VT, R1, R2, and R3–R6 stages were 0.83–0.44, −0.22 to −5.23, 0.42–0.35, 0.69–0.87, 0.60–0.75, 0.49–0.61, and 0.42–0.53, respectively. The simulated nitrogen concentration at the various growth stages of summer maize was consistent with the actual spatial distribution.

Comprehensive screening of low nitrogen tolerant maize based on multiple traits at the seedling stage

Abstract:Background Plants tolerant to low nitrogen are a quantitative trait affected by many factors, and the different parameters were used for stress-tolerant plant screening in different investigations. But there is no agreement on the use of these indicators. Therefore, a method that can integrate different parameters to evaluate stress tolerance is urgently needed. Methods Six maize genotypes were subject to low nitrogen stress for twenty days. Then seventeen traits of the six maize genotypes related to nitrogen were investigated. Nitrogen tolerance coefficient (NTC) was calculated as low nitrogen traits to high nitrogen traits. Then principal component analysis was conducted based on the NTC. Based on fuzzy mathematics theory, a D value (decimal comprehensive evaluation value) was introduced to evaluate maize tolerant to low nitrogen. Results Three maize (SY998, GEMS42-I and GEMS42-II) with the higher D value have better growth and higher nitrogen accumulation under low nitrogen conditions. In contrast, Ji846 with the lowest D value has the lowest nitrogen accumulation and biomass in response to nitrogen limitation. These results indicated that the D value could help to screen low nitrogen tolerant maize, given that the D value was positively correlated with low nitrogen tolerance in maize seedlings. Conclusions The present study introduced the D value to evaluate stress tolerance. The higher the D value, the greater tolerance of maize to low nitrogen stress. This method may reduce the complexity of the investigated traits and enhance the accuracy of stress-tolerant evaluation. In addition, this method not only can screen potentially tolerant germplasm for low-nitrogen tolerance quickly, but also can comprise the correlated traits as many as possible to avoid the one-sidedness of a single parameter.

Abstract:Accurate and dynamic monitoring of crop nitrogen status is the basis of scientific decisions regarding fertilization. In this study, we compared and analyzed three types of spectral variables: Sensitive spectral bands, the position of spectral features, and typical hyperspectral vegetation indices. First, the Savitzky-Golay technique was used to smooth the original spectrum, following which three types of spectral parameters describing crop spectral characteristics were extracted. Next, the successive projections algorithm (SPA) was adopted to screen out the sensitive variable set from each type of parameters. Finally, partial least squares (PLS) regression and random forest (RF) algorithms were used to comprehensively compare and analyze the performance of different types of spectral variables for estimating corn leaf nitrogen content (LNC). The results show that the integrated variable set composed of the optimal ones screened by SPA from three types of variables had the best performance for LNC estimation by the validation data set, with the values of R2, root means square error (RMSE), and normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of 0.77, 0.31, and 17.1%, and 0.55, 0.43, and 23.9% from PLS and RF, respectively. It indicates that the PLS model with optimally multitype spectral variables can provide better fits and be a more effective tool for evaluating corn LNC.

Comparative physiological and transcriptome analysis of leaf nitrogen fluxes in stay-green maize during the vegetative stage

Abstract:In maize, nitrogen (N) stored in leaves is an important internal source for supporting subsequent growth and development. However, the regulation of N fluxes and photosynthesis and the molecular and genotypic regulations that modify them are less clear in source leaves during the vegetative stage. This knowledge is crucial for improving N use efficiency (NUE). By using 15N labeling and transcriptome methods, an analysis of the physiological and molecular basis of leaf N import and export processes and photosynthetic N use efficiency (PNUE) was conducted in two maize hybrids (XY335 and XY696) with different stay-green characteristics during the vegetative stage. Leaf N import and export in XY696 were 45% and 33% greater than those in XY335. However, the PNUE in XY335 was 17% greater than that in XY696 due to the higher net photosynthetic rate (A) and lower SLN. Correspondingly, the chlorophyll content and photosynthesis-related enzyme (PEPc, PEPck, PPDK) activities increased by 18∼30% in XY335. Transcriptome analysis indicated that the expression levels of several N and carbon metabolism-related genes encoding Rubisco, PEPc, Nir, GS and AS were significantly increased or decreased in XY696 in parallel with enzyme activities. Moreover, there was a large difference in the expression abundance of genes encoding nitrate/nitrite transporters and transmembrane proteins. Our results suggest that two hybrids modulate leaf N fluxes and photosynthesis differently by altering gene expression and enzyme activities. Our study contributes to understanding leaf N fluxes and PNUE regulation and serves as a crucial reference for NUE improvement in maize breeding research.

Abstract:The balance of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolism influences plant growth and development as well as yield. A two-year field experiment was conducted in a hilly region in southwest China in 2019–2020 to investigate the correlation between the accumulation and balance of C and N, as well as the grain yield of maize cultivars with contrasting N efficiencies. Using Zhenghong 311 (ZH 311) and Xianyu 508 (XY 508) as research sources, the differences in C and N accumulation and balance in maize cultivars with contrasting N efficiencies were compared to analyze the correlation between the accumulation and balance of C and N with grain yield. According to the results, the ZH 311 cultivar had higher C and N accumulation in each stage and grain yield than the XY 508 cultivar, while the C/N ratio in each stage and organ was significantly lower in ZH 311 than in XY 508, with the greatest difference occurring in the silking stage and leaf, indicating that the N-efficient cultivar ZH 311 had evident advantages in accumulation and balance of C and N and grain yield than the N-inefficient cultivar XY 508. Moreover, the C and N accumulation and grain yield increased significantly with N application, while the C/N ratio in each stage and organ decreased significantly with N application, but the differences between ZH 311 and XY 508 increased first and then decreased with the increase of N level, the optimum N level when obtaining the highest grain yield of ZH 311 (273.21 kg ha –1 ) was significantly lower than that of XY 508 (355.88 kg ha –1 ). Furthermore, grain yield was positively correlated with C ( R 2 = 0.9251) and N ( R 2 = 0.9033) accumulation, affected by pre-anthesis N ( R 2 = 0.9198) and post-anthesis C ( R 2 = 0.8632) accumulation, and negatively correlated with the C/N ratio ( R 2 = 0.7664), with the highest correlation between grain yield and the C/N ratio in silking stage ( R 2 = 0.7984) and leaf ( R 2 = 0.7616). In conclusion, the N-efficient cultivar ZH 311 could better coordinate the C and N balance of the plant, especially the C and N balance in the silking stage and leaf, promote photosynthetic product storage and transport, prolong the leaf function period, and make the pre-anthesis and post-anthesis C and N accumulation of ZH 311 significantly higher than those of XY 508, allowing higher grain yields.

Abstract:Abstract Realization of agricultural crop condition through field survey is quite expensive, time consuming and sometimes not practical for remote locations. Optical remote sensing techniques can provide information on real condition of the crops by observing spectral reflectance at different crop growth phases and is less expensive and less time consuming. Hyperspectral remote sensing provides a unique opportunity for non-destructive, timely and accurate estimation of crop biophysical and biochemical properties. In this study, a field experiment was conducted to identify the water and nitrogen stress indicative spectral bands using ground-based hyperspectral data and to assess the predictive capability of selective bands on yield of maize under water and nitrogen stress environment. The experiment comprised of three irrigation scheduling treatments based on IW/CPE ration of 0.6, 0.8 and 1.2 and three nitrogen level treatments, i.e., 100, 200 and 300 kg of N ha −1 , respectively, with three replications in a split plot design. The spectral reflectance was measured before irrigation at tasseling and dough stage of the maize crop using portable field spectroradiometer. The results of stepwise multiple linear regression indicated the highest predicting capability of spectral bands 540 nm, 780 nm and 860 nm for leaf nitrogen and 700 nm, 740 nm and 860 nm for leaf water content. The derived biophysical parameters based on spectral reflectance viz. relative leaf water content (%), leaf area index and leaf nitrogen contentment (%) at tasseling stage of maize crop accounted for 80%, 61% and 66% variation in grain yield, respectively.

Abstract:Inadequate water and nitrogen (N) supplies can limit the productivity of maize. Climate change will likely increase drought in many regions on a global scale. The determination of N fertilizer rates under field drought conditions will be critical toward the reduction of agricultural risk. For this study, drought-resistant/sensitive cultivars were selected as experimental samples. Our results revealed that drought stress reduced the relative water content (RWC) of leaves, which resulted in leaf curling, while decreasing photosynthesis levels and N accumulation. In contrast to those without N treatments, the application of N significantly increased grain yields by 26.8% during the wet year but increased only by 5.4% during the dry year. Under the same N levels, the reduction in yield caused by drought increased with the increased application of N. This was because the application of the N fertilizer translated to increase the leaf area and transpiration, exacerbated the soil water loss and induced a leaf curling state in maize, which had deleterious effects on photosynthesis and N absorption. During the dry year, the yields of drought-sensitive cultivars were even less than those without the application of N. Compared with those of drought-sensitive cultivars, the RWCs of drought-resistant cultivars decreased more rapidly, and they entered the state of leaf curling earlier. Thus, N fertilizer inputs should be reduced, and the extent of N fertilization for drought-sensitive cultivars should be reduced even further.

Abstract:Aims/Objectives: Is to examine the use of spectral reflectance characteristics and explore the effectiveness of spectral indices under water and nitrogen stress environment. Study Design: Split-plot. Place and Duration of Study: Agro Climate Research Center, A.R.I., P.J.T.S. Agricultural University, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, India in 2018-19. Methodology: Fixed amount of 5 cm depth of water was applied to each plot when the ratio of irrigation water and cumulative pan evaporation (IW/CPE) arrives at pre-determined levels of 0.6, 0.8 & 1.2 as main-plot and 3 nitrogen levels viz. 100, 200 & 300 kg N ha-1 as a subplot to create water and nitrogen stress environment. Spectral reflectance from each treatment was measured using Spectroradiometer and analyzed using statistical software package SPSS 17, SAS and trial version of UNSCRABLER. Results: At tasseling and dough stages, the reflectance pattern of maize was found to be higher in visible light spectrum of 400 to700 nm whereas lower in near-infrared region (700 to 900) in both underwater (IW/CPE ratio of 0.6) and nitrogen stress (100 kg N ha-1) environment as compared to moderate and no stress irrigation (IW/CPE ratio of 0.8 & 1.2) and nitrogen (200 and 300 kg N ha-1) treatments. The discriminant analysis of NDVI, GNDVI, WBI and SR indicated that 72.2% and 66.7% of the original grouped cases and 55.6% and 38.9% of the cross-validated grouped cases under irrigation and nitrogen levels, respectively were correctly classified. Conclusion: Hyperspectral remote sensing can be used as a tool to detect and quantify the water and nitrogen stress in maize non-destructively. Spectral vegetation indices viz. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI) were found effective to distinguish water and nitrogen stress severity in maize.
Effects of Various Levels of Water Stress on Morpho-Physiological Traits and Spectral Reflectance of Maize at Seedling Growth Stage

Abstract:Water stress (drought and waterlogging) is one highly important factor affecting food security in China. Investigating the effects of soil moisture stress on the morphological and physiological characteristics of maize seedlings is crucial for ensuring food production. The use of spectral monitoring to observe crop phenotypic traits and assess crop health has become a focal point in field crop research. However, studies exploring the contribution of crop phenotypic and physiological data to the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) are still limited. In this study, a 35-day pot experiment was conducted with seven soil moisture gradients: 50%, 60%, 70%, 80% (control group, CK), 90%, 100%, and 110% treatment. In order to investigate the effects of soil moisture stress on seedling phenotypes, antioxidant enzyme activities, and NDVI, an ASD FieldSpec 4 Hi-Res NG portable spectrometer was used to collect spectral data from maize (Zea mays L. B73) leaves. The contributions of maize phenotypic and physiological traits to NDVI were also examined. The results indicated that (1) the 50% and 110% treatments significantly affected maize seedling phenotypes compared to the CK group; (2) the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) in the leaves increased under water stress, while the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) decreased; (3) soil moisture stress (drought and waterlogging) reduced photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll content (SPAD), and NDVI, with inhibitory effects intensifying as the stress level increased; (4) Redundancy analysis showed that antioxidant enzymes explained 69.87% of the variation in seedling height, leaf area, and NDVI. Soil moisture stress, chlorophyll, and SPAD explained 58.14% of the variation in these parameters. The results demonstrated that maize seedlings were highly sensitive to soil moisture changes, and the SPAD value contributed significantly to NDVI (p < 0.01). This study provides valuable insights for future research in precision agriculture management

Abstract:Nitrogen is one of the most important nutrient indicators for the growth of crops, and is closely related to the chlorophyll content of leaves and thus influences the photosynthetic ability of the crops. In this study, five hybrid rice varieties were cultivated during one entire growing period in one experimental field supplied with six nitrogen fertilizer levels. Visible and near infrared (vis/NIR) reflectance spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis was used to identify hybrid rice varieties and nitrogen fertilizer levels, as well as to detect chlorophyll content associated with nitrogen levels. The support vector machine (SVM) algorithm was applied to identify five varieties of hybrid rice and six levels of nitrogen fertilizer. The results demonstrated that different varieties of hybrid rice for each nitrogen level can be well distinguished except for the highest nitrogen level, and no nitrogen level for each rice variety can be completely identified from the other five nitrogen levels. Further, 12 spectral indices combined with partial least square (PLS) analysis were applied for estimating chlorophyll content of rice leaves from plants subjected to different nitrogen levels, and a root mean square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) of 0.506, a coefficient of determination (R-2) of 97.8% and a ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) of 4.6 for all rice varieties indicated this as a preferable procedure. This study demonstrates that Vis/NIR spectroscopy can have a great potential for identification of rice varieties and evaluation of nitrogen fertilizer levels.
