Abstract:Background and aims: Hypertension is among the major risk factors for cardiovascular events in the Iranian population. This cross-sectional study was designed to examine the association of adherence to the dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) and Mediterranean (MED) dietary patterns with the distribution of blood pressure and pre-hypertension prevalence. Methods and results: This cross-sectional study was carried out in 1363 non-hypertensive adults. Adherence to the DASH and MED diets was calculated using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Hypertension was measured by the standard method. Multiple logistic regression was applied to obtain the odds ratio of pre-hypertension in the tertiles of MED and DASH dietary patterns. Compared to the lowest, participants with the highest adherence to the DASH dietary pattern had significantly lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) (111.3 ± 11.8 vs. 112.8 ± 12.5; P = 0.010) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (70.7 ± 9.2 vs. 71.8 ± 9.8; 0.042). There was no significant difference in the mean SBP and DBP among the participants across tertiles of MED or diet adherence. Higher scores of the DASH and MED diets were inversely associated with lower SBP after adjustment for all potential confounders (OR = -0.04, 95% CI = -0.29, -0.01, P = 0.039) and (OR = -0.04, 95% CI = -0.72, -0.02, P = 0.044), respectively. Also, DASH and MED dietary patterns was associated with reduced OR of pre-hypertension occurrence by 13% (OR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.70-0.98; P for trend = 0.042) and 16% ([OR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.69-0.97; P trend = 0.035), respectively. Conclusion: Adherence to the DASH and MED diets was inversely associated with the odds for pre-hypertension and SBP.

Abstract:Abstract Background The association between the Mediterranean diet (MED) or dietary approach to stop hypertension (DASH) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors is well-documented. Nevertheless, a consistent relationship with the Middle East population has yet to be known. Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between DASH/MED and blood lipids in Iranian adults. Methods Four thousand seven hundred forty participants, aged 35–70 years (mean: 50.0) participated in the Shahedieh cohort study in Yazd, Iran, were followed from 2016 until now. Participants provided dietary and blood lipid data through a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, and blood samples were taken after a fasted state. We used binary logistic regression to examine the association between DASH/MED scores and blood lipids. Results In the participants who ingested a DASH-like diet the third vs. the first tertile of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, and LDL/HDL (high-density lipoprotein) ratio reduced significantly ( P < 0.01). While in the participants who ingested the MED-like diet the HDL level increased significantly( 52.8 ± 12. 3 vs. 51.6 ± 11.6, P < 0.01). In Binary logistic regression, higher adherence to the DASH diet showed 19 % lower odds of high TC level (OR: 0.81; 95 %CI: 0.69–0.95) and 18 % lower odds of high LDL/HDL ratio (OR: 0.82; 95 %CI: 0.70–0.96). Besides, high adherence to the MED diet was associated with lower odds of LDL/HDL ratio (OR: 0.85; 95 %CI: 0.72–0.99). Conclusions Our findings suggest that TC, TG, LDL, LDL/HDL ratio, and HDL improved in participants who ingested a DASH-like diet and the LDL/HDL ratio improved in participants who ingested MED-like diet and, subsequently they might have a protective effect on CVDs risk. Further epidemiological studies are needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract:<span><h3>Purpose</h3><p>Examining the association between adherence to the dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) dietary pattern and mental health in Iranian university students.</p></span><span><h3>Methods</h3><p>This cross-sectional study was conducted among 240 university students (mean age 21.5 years; 86.7% female). Mental health was evaluated using validated Persian versions of the 12-item general health questionnaire (GHQ-12) and the 21-item depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21). The lower the subjects' scores on these questionnaires, the better their mental health. Usual past-year dietary intakes were assessed by a validated 168-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The DASH score was computed based on energy-adjusted intakes of eight major dietary components emphasized or minimized in the DASH pattern. The higher the DASH score of a subject, the greater his/her adherence to the DASH pattern.</p></span><span><h3>Results</h3><p>The Pearson's correlation coefficients of DASH score with GHQ-12 total score, DASS-21 total score, and DASS-21 depression, anxiety, and stress subscale scores were − 0.431, − 0.441, − 0.434, − 0.325, and − 0.408, respectively (all <em>P </em>P P P </p></span><span><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>The findings indicate that greater adherence to the DASH dietary pattern is associated with better mental health in Iranian university students. However, prospective studies of sufficient methodological quality are needed to confirm these findings.</p></span>

Abstract:Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) as a multifactorial disorder is associated with non-communicable diseases. The dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet is a healthy dietary pattern. We investigated the effect of the DASH diet on fatty liver and cardiovascular risk factors in subjects with MetS. Methods: 60 Subjects with MetS were assigned into the intervention group (DASH diet) or the control group (a healthy diet). Fatty liver index (FLI), hepatic steatosis index (HSI), waist circumference (WC), weight, body mass index (BMI), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) were evaluated at the beginning and after intervention. Equations of fatty liver indices such as FLI and HSI are based on liver enzymes, anthropometric variables, sex and having diabetes. Results: 30 subjects in the intervention group and 29 subjects in the control group completed the study. We found a significant reduction in the intervention group compared to the control group in FLI (-13.06 ± 10.03 vs. -2.90 ± 6.82;P < 0.001), HSI (-2.72 ± 2.59 vs. -0.81 ± 3.80;P = 0.02), WC (-6.02 ± 4.24 vs. -2.24 ± 4.28;P = 0.001), weight (-3.39 ± 2.53 vs. -1.51 ± 2.72;P = 0.008), BMI (-1.25 ± 0.93 vs. -0.56 ± 1.01;P = 0.008), DBP (-5.16 ± 3.92 vs. -1.50 ± 7.04;P = 0.01), SBP (-6.97 ± 8.21 vs. -1.36 ± 6.83;P = 0.006), TG (-18.50 ± 14.32 vs. 0.60 ± 23.81;P < 0.001), TC (-16.10 ± 17.94 vs. -5.07 ± 23.62;P = 0.04) and LDL-c (-13.50 ± 9.58 vs. -4.90 ± 18.28;P = 0.02). These results remained significant after adjusting for confounding factors, except for TC (P = 0.25). Conclusions: The DASH diet was more effective than the control diet in managing fatty liver and cardiovascular risk factors. Abstract:Aims: The DASH diet was designed for helping control of blood pressure but, fortunately, it can also be prescribed for many other chronic conditions. The current study intended to assess the potential effects of DASH diet on metabolic risk factors in patients with chronic disease. Data synthesis: We carried out a systematic literature search for RCTs from inception until July 2020. A total of 54 clinical trials were included in the final analysis. Compared to control groups, a significant lower effect of the DASH diet was noted for body weight (-1.59 kg; p < 0.001), BMI (-0.64 kg/m2; p < 0.001), and WC (-1.93 cm; p < 0.001) as well as for SBP (-3.94 mmHg; p < 0.001) and DBP (-2.44 mmHg; P < 0.001). The DASH diet significantly decreased TC (-5.12 mg/dl; p = 0.008) and LDL-C levels (-3.53 mg/dl; p = 0.041), but not HDL-C (0.30 mg/dl; p = 0.510), TG (-4.22 mg/dl; p = 0.067), and VLDL-C (-2.16 mg/dl; p = 0.062). No significant effect of the DASH diet was noted for blood glucose (-0.38 mg/dl; p = 0.216), insulin (-0.03 μIU/mL; p = 0.817), HOMA-IR (-0.15; p = 0.132), and CRP (-0.33 mg/l; p = 0.173). Conclusions: The DASH diet is a feasible approach to weight loss and to control blood pressure and hypercholesterolemia.
Favorable association between Mediterranean diet (MeD) and DASH with NAFLD among Iranian adults of the Amol Cohort Study (AmolCS)

Abstract:Abstract Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an emerging cause of chronic liver diseases and a major health problem worldwide. Dietary patterns may play a critical role in controlling and preventing this disease, but the available evidence is scarce. The current study aims to ascertain the association of adherence to the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and Mediterranean diet (MeD) with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among Iranian adults of the Amol Cohort Study (AmolCS). In a cross-sectional analysis among 3220 adults (55.3% men), age ≥ 18 years (46.96 ± 14.67), we measured usual dietary intake with a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and then calculated dietary pattern scores for DASH and MeD. Sociodemographic and lifestyle factors were collected by a structured questionnaire. The presence and degree of NAFLD were also determined by abdominal sonography. Multiple regression models were used to estimate NAFLD odds across tertiles of DASH and Mediterranean dietary scores. Dietary DASH and Mediterranean components were adjusted for total energy intake, based on the residual methods. After adjusting for multiple potential confounders, we found an inverse association of DASH and MeD with NAFLD (Ptrend = 0.02, and Ptrend = 0.002, respectively). Those in the highest tertiles of adherence to the DASH and MeD had the lowest risk for NAFLD (OR = 0.80, 95%CI = 0.66–0.96, OR = 0.64, 95%CI = 0.52–0.78, respectively). The results of logistic analysis of MeD, stratified by gender and abdominal obesity, revealed the favorable association was more pronounced in women (OR = 0.42, 95%CI = 0.29–0.61, Ptrend = 0.004), and in participants with or without abdominal obesity (OR = 0.62, 95% CI = 0.47–0.81, Ptrend = 0.03, OR = 0.64, 95%CI = 0.475–0.91, Ptrend = 0.04, respectively). Similar results were obtained for the adherence to DASH diet score with the prevalence of NAFLD patients with abdominal obesity (OR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.57–0.97, Ptrend = 0.04). The findings suggested the favorable association between DASH and MeD with NAFLD in Iranian adults, especially women and subjects with or without abdominal obesity. Further prospective investigations are needed to confirm the integrity of our findings.

Abstract:A heterotrophic denitrifying strain named ND1 has been isolated from rotating drum biofilter (RDB) which was mainly used for the treatment of exhaust gas such as NOx. It was proved to be Gram-negative. In addition, it was able to form dry and wrinkled colonies on the medium, adhere on the agar surface, produce yellow pigments and be motile with a single polar flagellum. It was indentified as the Pseudomonas stutzeri according to morphological and physiological biochemical characteristics and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Under the conditions of pH 7.2 and temperature 30 degrees C, the NO3- -N removal efficiency by ND1 was up to 100% in 5 days,while the NO2- -N degradation ratio was only 85% by the strain DN1 when subjected to the same condition as the above.

Abstract:Background: Despite the favorable effects of well-known dietary patterns in the treatment of hypertension (HTN), such as the Mediterranean (MED) and Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diets, it is uncertain if adherence to these diets can reduce the risk of HTN, especially in non-Mediterranean populations. Moreover, none of the previous studies evaluated the association between the MED-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet adherence and the incidence of HTN. Therefore, we aimed to assess the association of adherence to these diets with the development of HTN in adults. Methods: This prospective study included 2706 adults free of HTN who were selected from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. The MED, DASH, and MIND diet scores were computed at baseline using dietary information collected with the food frequency questionnaire. Associations between the dietary indices and risk of HTN over a median follow-up of 7.4 years were examined using Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. Results: The baseline mean age of participants was 37.9 ± 12.5 years (age range: 20-79 years), and 52.4% were women. During the 18262 person-years follow-up, 599 incidents of HTN were identified. There was no significant relationship between the dietary scores and the risk of HTN, either as continuous or categorical variables, even after excluding individuals with early/late HTN diagnosis, prehypertension, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease at baseline. A significant interaction was found between body mass index (BMI) and DASH (P-interaction < 0.001). Stratified analyses based on baseline BMI status revealed an inverse association between DASH and HTN risk in individuals with normal-weight (HR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.71-0.98, P = 0.031), although this association did not reach statistical significance across the tertiles of DASH. Conclusions: In this study, MED, DASH, and MIND showed no significant association with the occurrence of HTN in adults. Further prospective studies on diverse populations are required to assess whether adherence to the MED, DASH, and MIND diets is an effective strategy for reducing the occurrence HTN.

Abstract:Background: adherence to Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) has demonstrated to be effective in lowering blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk markers in different populations, but has never been evaluated in the Mexican population. Objective: to assess adherence to the DASH dietary pattern by using an adapted DASH adequacy index (DASH-AI), and to evaluate its association with cardiovascular risk markers in an adult Mexican population. Methods: we conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data of 1,490 adults aged 20-50 years. Diet was assessed with a Food Frequency Questionnaire and sodium intake by 24-hour urinary sodium excretion; the DASH-AI score was calculated based on the DASH nutrient targets. Multivariable linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate the association between the DASH-AI score and cardiovascular risk markers (body mass index [BMI], waist circumferences, systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and high- and low-density lipoproteins). Results: we observed an association of the DASH-AI score with BMI, WC and DBP in the linear (BMI, : -0.55, 95 % CI: -0.77, -0.33; WC, : -1.66, 95 % CI: -2.19, -1.13; DBP, : -0.65, 95 % CI: -1.07, -0.24), and logistic (BMI > 25 kg/m2, OR: 0.82, 95 % CI: 0.74, 0.93; elevated WC, OR: 0.72, 95 % CI: 0.64, 0.81; DBP, OR: 0.83, 95 % CI: 0.72, 0 .95) models. Conclusion: compliance to the DASH-style diet was inversely associated with BMI, WC and DBP in this Mexican population. Promoting adherence to this dietary pattern in the context of Mexican diet is needed to improve cardiovascular health in this population.

Abstract:Despite the favorable association of components of "dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH)" diet and breast cancer (BC), limited data are available linking the whole DASH diet to BC. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between adherence to DASH eating plan and odds of BC in Iranian women. This population-based case-control study was conducted among women aged ≥30 years, who were residing in Isfahan, Iran. Cases were 350 patients with newly diagnosed stage I-IV breast cancer, for whom in-situ or invasive status of BC was confirmed by physical examination and mammography. Controls were 700 age-matched apparently healthy individuals who were randomly selected from general population. Dietary data were collected using a validated 106-item Willett-format semi-quantitative dish-based food frequency questionnaire. To investigate participants' adherence to DASH diet, we created DASH scores based on foods and nutrients emphasized or minimized in the DASH diet. After controlling for potential confounders, individuals in the highest quartile of the DASH diet score had 85% lower odds of breast cancer than women in the bottom quartile (OR: 0.15; 95% CIs: 0.09–0.24). Stratified analysis by menopausal status revealed such association in postmenopausal women (OR: 0.11; 95% CI: 0.06–0.19), but not in premenopausal women (OR: 0.60; 95% CI: 0.14–2.59). In addition, when stratified by BMI status, we found statistically significant inverse association between adherence to the DASH eating pattern and odds of breast cancer among normal-weight (OR for comparing extreme quartiles: 0.13; 95% CI: 0.07–0.24; <i>P</i>-trend < 0.001) and obese women (0.13; 0.05–0.34; <i>P</i>-trend < 0.001). In conclusion, our findings indicated an inverse association between adherence to the DASH eating plan and odds of breast cancer among Iranian women. Further, prospective studies are required to confirm our findings.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Healthful dietary patterns have been associated with lower risks of type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease, but their relations with intermediate markers of cardiometabolic and endocrine health are less established.OBJECTIVE:We evaluated the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), the alternate Mediterranean diet (aMED), and the Alternate Healthy Eating Index (aHEI) diet-quality scores with cardiometabolic and endocrine plasma biomarkers in US women.DESIGN:The trial was a cross-sectional analysis of 775 healthy women in the Women's Lifestyle Validation Study that was conducted within the NHS (Nurses' Health Study) and NHS II longitudinal cohorts. Multiple linear regression models adjusted for potential confounders were used to estimate associations between quartiles of dietary pattern-adherence scores that were derived from a food-frequency questionnaire and plasma biomarker concentrations that were collected simultaneously.RESULTS:In multivariable models in which highest and lowest quartiles of dietary pattern scores were compared, 1) DASH was significantly associated with higher concentrations of high-density lipoprotein (9%) and sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) (21%), and lower concentrations of leptin (28%), triglycerides (19%), and C-peptide (4%) (all P-trend ≤ 0.04); 2) the aMED was associated with 19% higher SHBG and 16% lower triglycerides (P-trend = 0.02 and 0.003, respectively); and 3) the aHEI was associated with significantly higher concentrations of insulin (16%) and SHBG (19%) and lower concentrations of leptin (18%) (all P-trend ≤ 0.02). Further adjustment for body mass index (BMI) attenuated these associations but remained significant for 1) DASH with leptin and triglycerides and 2) the aMED with triglycerides (all P-trend ≤ 0.03).CONCLUSIONS:Adherence to healthful dietary patterns is associated with favorable concentrations of many cardiometabolic and endocrine biomarkers. These relations are mediated in part by BMI.

Abstract:An analog of 1,3-di-o-tolylguanidine (DTG), [125I]-labeled 1-(p-iodophenyl)-3-(1-adamantyl)guanidine (PIPAG), was synthesized as a potential ligand for cerebral sigma binding sites. Data from in vitro binding experiments and in vivo experiments on brain distribution suggested that PIPAG binds to sigma binding sites with high affinity (Kd in low nanomolar range) as determined by Scatchard analysis and relative potencies of sigma-specific drugs. Haloperidol had the highest potency to inhibit [125I]PIPAG binding. It was followed by DTG, BMY 14802, and (+)-N-allylnormetazocine. Compounds with high affinities for dopamine receptors (but low affinity for sigma binding sites), for opioid receptors, for nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and for phencyclidine receptors were ineffective inhibitors of [125I]PIPAG binding.

Abstract:Background: Dietary patterns are important factors associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). We examined the association between dietary patterns derived from factor analysis and CVD risk factors. Methods: In the present cross-sectional study, a total of 3,687 adults (aged 40 to 70 years) with one or more types of CVDs were enrolled as participants. A validated semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire was utilized to assess food intakes, and then dietary patterns were extracted by factor analysis. Fasting blood sugar (FBS), lipid profile, anthropometric indices, and blood pressure (BP) were measured. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression analysis was employed to ascertain the odds ratio (OR) of CVD risk factors associated with posteriori dietary patterns. In this study, healthy and unhealthy dietary patterns were identified. Results: Adherence to a healthy dietary pattern was associated with a decrease in systolic BP (SBP) (OR = 0.78; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.62-0.99) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels (OR = 1.32; 95% CI: 1.06-1.64). Additionally, greater adherence to the unhealthy dietary pattern was positively associated with SBP (OR = 1.43; 95% CI: 1.13-1.80) and diastolic BP (DBP) (OR = 1.33; 95% CI: 1.01-1.76). Conclusions: We concluded that greater adherence to an unhealthy dietary pattern was associated with an increase in SBP and DBP. On the other hand, greater adherence to a healthy dietary pattern could be effective in reducing SBP. Further investigation is recommended to validate these findings.

Abstract:Background: Evidence suggests that healthy dietary patterns such as Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), Mediterranean diet (MED), and Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) may reduce the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) albeit with controversial results. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate possible associations between the NAFLD risk and adherence to the MED, DASH, and HEI-2015 diets. Methods: A case-control study was conducted involving 122 NAFLD patients and 122 non-NAFLD patients. A gastroenterologist confirmed the NAFLD diagnosis. A 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to collect the dietary data, and the scores for MED, DASH diet, and HEI-2015 were obtained. Multivariable logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (Cis). Results: The highest pentile of adherence to the DASH diet was significantly associated with the lowest risk of NAFLD (OR: 0.37, 95% CI: 0.14 - 0.92, P trend = 0.03). This association remained significant after adjustment for the confounding variable NAFLD (OR: 0.33, 95% CI: 0.11 - 0.96, P trend = 0.04). No significant difference was found between NAFLD risk and adherence to the MED and HEI-2015. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the highest score of adherence to the DASH diet was associated with the lowest risk of NAFLD.
The Effect of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Diet on Sleep, Mental Health, and Hormonal Changes: A Randomized Clinical Trial in Women With Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract:Background: Some dietary patterns may improve diabetes complications through scavenging oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. This study evaluated the effect of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet on sleep status, mental health, and hormonal changes among Iranian women with type 2 diabetes. Methods: This randomized controlled trial (RCT) included 66 diabetic women. Participants were randomly divided into the two different diet groups (the DASH diet and control diet; 33 patients in each group) for 3 months. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 items were used to assess sleep and mental disorders, respectively. Fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), advanced glycation end products (AGEs), as well as several sex hormones were evaluated at the beginning and the end of the trial. Results: Anthropometric indices, HbA1c (control: 8.77 ± 0.82 vs. 8.04 ± 1.03; the DASH diet 8.70 ± 1.05 vs.7.41 ± 1.03), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) (control: 72.16 ± 26.02 vs. 68.12 ± 27.63; the DASH diet: 72.99 ± 25.19 vs. 67.43 ± 27.63) significantly decreased over 12 weeks in both the groups (P < .0001). Testosterone, 2-h postprandial glucose (2hPPG), and AGEs significantly decreased over 12 weeks in the DASH diet group. Sleep, depression, and anxiety scores significantly decreased over 12 weeks in the DASH diet group. Night sleep duration significantly increased over 12 weeks in the DASH diet group (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: A 12-week DASH diet significantly decreases testosterone, 2hPPG, AGEs level, as well as sleep, depression, and anxiety scores in women with type 2 diabetes. However, more RCTs are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract:Abstract Background Although adherence to “Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension” (DASH) dietary pattern has been linked with reduced risk of several cancers. To our knowledge no studies have examined the association between the DASH dietary pattern and risk of gastric cancer. This study was performed to investigate the association between adherence to the DASH dietary pattern and odds of gastric cancer in Iran. Methods This hospital-based case-control study was conducted on 178 histo-pathologically confirmed patients with gastric cancer and 276 sex-matched healthy controls. A validated 146-item Diet History Questionnaire (DHQ) was used to assess participants’ usual dietary intakes. The DASH dietary pattern scores were calculated using the method introduced by Fung. Unconditional logistic regression, in which potential confounders were taken into account, was applied to determine the association of adherence to the DASH dietary pattern and odds of gastric cancer. Results Mean age of cases and controls were 60.8 and 53.2 y, respectively. After controlling for age, sex and energy intakes, participants in the highest tertile were 62% less likely to have gastric cancer than those in the lowest tertile (OR 0.38; 95% CI 0.22,0.65; P trend < 0.004). Further adjustment for other potential confounders, including education, marital status, residential place, alcohol intake and smoking, did not change the association dramatically (OR 0.44; 95% CI 0.25, 0.78; P trend = 0.005). Even after additional controlling for H-Pylori infection and BMI, greatest adherence to the DASH dietary pattern was associated with a 54% decreased risk of gastric cancer (OR 0.46; 95% CI 0.26, 0.83; P trend = 0.01). Conclusions Adherence to the DASH dietary pattern was associated with lower gastric cancer risk in this case-control study.

Abstract:The metabolic syndrome is a cluster of disorders dominated by abdominal obesity, hypertriacylglycerolaemia, low HDL-cholesterol, high blood pressure and high fasting glucose. Diet modification is a safe and effective way to treat the metabolic syndrome. Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) is a dietary pattern rich in fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products, and low in meats and sweets. DASH provides good amounts of fibre, K, Ca and Mg, and limited quantities of total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and Na. Although DASH was initially designed for the prevention or control of hypertension, using a DASH diet has other metabolic benefits. In the present review, the effect of each dietary component of DASH on the risk factors of the metabolic syndrome is discussed. Due to limited fat and high fibre and Ca content, individuals on the DASH diet are less prone to overweight and obesity and possess lower concentrations of total and LDL-cholesterol although changes in TAG and HDL-cholesterol have been less significant and available evidence in this regard is still inconclusive. Moreover, high amounts of fruit and vegetables in DASH provide great quantities of K, Mg and fibre, all of which have been shown to reduce blood pressure. K, Mg, fibre and antioxidants have also been effective in correcting glucose and insulin abnormalities. Evidence is provided from cross-sectional investigations, cohort studies and randomised controlled trials, and, where available, from published meta-analyses. Mechanisms are described according to human studies and, in the case of a lack of evidence, from animal and cell culture investigations.

Abstract:Background and purpose: The relationship between dietary patterns and cirrhosis is undeniable. The present study aimed to investigate the association between the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and the risk of mortality in patients with cirrhosis prospectively. Methods: In this cohort study, 121 cirrhotic patients were enrolled and followed up annually for four years. Nutritional status and dietary intakes were assessed initially, and the DASH score was calculated accordingly. Crude and multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard analyses. Results: DASH components including fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds, and low-fat dairy products were significantly associated with lower mortality risk in cirrhotic patients. Also, a higher DASH score was significantly associated with a reduction in the risk of mortality in patients with cirrhosis, so that after adjusting for all confounders, the risk of mortality in the upper tertile was 89% lower than the first tertile (HR = 0.11, 95% CI: 0.03-0.42, P trend < 0.001). The 4-year survival rate among patients across tertiles of DASH was 32%, 37%, and 46%, respectively (P = 0.005). Conclusion: It can be concluded that a higher DASH diet score may be associated with a reduced risk of mortality in cirrhotic patients. However, larger studies are needed to confirm the findings and determine their potential mechanisms.

Abstract:Background and objective: We are not aware of studies examining the association between dietary meal intake habits (DMIH) and severity of coronary artery stenosis (CAS). This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between DMIH and the severity of CAS as well as cardiometabolic risk factors in adults undergoing coronary angiography. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done on 720 patients undergoing coronary angiography (aged 35-75 years) who were admitted to Afshar Hospital, a referral hospital for cardiovascular diseases in Yazd, Iran. Data on DMIH were gathered by interview. Blood samples were taken for biochemical analysis. Blood pressure, anthropometric indices, and body composition were also evaluated. The relationship between DMIH and the severity of CAS [examined by angiography based on Gensini Score (GS) and Syntax Score (SS)] and cardiometabolic risk factors were assessed using logistic regression and the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), respectively, in crude and multivariable adjusted models. Results: After adjustment for all possible confounding variables, the study revealed that people who ate 3 meals/day had a lower risk of severe CAS compared to people who ate 2 or fewer meals (OR = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.26, 0.88, P-trend = 0.02). There was an inverse association between the number of snacks /day and the severity of CAS (OR = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.22, 0.87, P-trend = 0.02). There was also an inverse relationship between breakfast frequency/week and the severity of CAS based on both GS and SS (P < 0.05). Breakfast consumption, meal frequency, lunch consumption, snack frequency, and more food consumption on holidays were also associated with different cardiometabolic markers and anthropometric measures (P < 0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, meal frequency and breakfast consumption might be inversely associated with CAS and cardiometabolic risk factors.

Abstract:Introduction: Limited data are available on the association of Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components. The present study was conducted to investigate the association of DII with MetS and its components among Iranian adults. Methods: A total of 404 subjects, aged 18 years or older, were included in the current cross-sectional study. We used a validated and reliable 147-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to assess dietary intakes. Fasting blood sample was obtained to quantify glycemic indicators and lipid profile. MetS was defined based on the guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III). Results: Mean age of study participants was 38.20 ± 9.55 years. No significant association was found between DII and odds of MetS (odds ratio [OR]: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.48-1.76). In terms of MetS components, a significant positive association was seen between DII scores and reduced levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (OR: 2.29, 95% CI: 1.32-3.97); such that after controlling for energy intake, demographic variables and BMI, participants in the highest category of DII had 2.71 times greater odds for having reduced levels of HDL-C (OR: 2.71, 95% CIs: 1.34, 5.47). There was no other significant association between other components of MetS and DII scores either before or after adjusting for confounding variables. Conclusion: We observed no significant association between DII and odds of MetS. However, higher score of DII was associated with lower levels of HDL.
