Abstract:The potential of using Jordanian oil shale ash (OSA) as partial replacement of the cement on fresh and mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) was investigated in depth. Six SCC mixtures were prepared with limestone filler and varying cement mass replacements of 0-30% OSA. The binder materials content was kept constant at (350 kg/m3) while the water-to-binder ratio was changed from 0.5 to 0.68 depending upon the amount of mixing water needed to achieve the required fresh properties. Standard cylinders (100x200 mm) were cast, then cured in water for 7, 28 and 56 days before being tested under compression to evaluate the mechanical properties of SCC. The strength of the SCC concrete decreased with higher OSA replacement contents although maintaining a higher value than that of conventional concrete made at almost the same cement factor. In general, replacement contents of cement by OSA not larger than 10% imparted limited negative impact on obtained mechanical properties. The SCC mixtures studied experienced high flowability, filling ability and resistance against segregation as indicated by the several tests carried out on fresh mixtures.

Abstract:Robot-assisted rehabilitation and training systems are utilized to improve the functional recovery of individuals with mobility limitations. These systems offer structured rehabilitation through precise human-robot interaction, outperforming traditional physical therapy by delivering advantages such as targeted muscle recovery, optimization of walking patterns, and automated training routines tailored to the user's objectives and musculoskeletal attributes. In our research, we propose the development of a walking simulator that considers user-specific musculoskeletal information to replicate natural walking dynamics, accounting for factors like joint angles, muscular forces, internal user-specific constraints, and external environmental factors. The integration of these factors into robot-assisted training can provide a more realistic rehabilitation environment and serve as a foundation for achieving natural bipedal locomotion. Our research team has developed a robot-assisted training platform (RATP) that generates gait training sets based on user-specific internal and external constraints by incorporating a genetic algorithm (GA). We utilize the Lagrangian multipliers to accommodate requirements from the rehabilitation field to instantly reshape the gait patterns while maintaining their overall characteristics, without an additional gait pattern search process. Depending on the patient's rehabilitation progress, there are times when it is necessary to reorganize the training session by changing training conditions such as terrain conditions, walking speed, and joint range of motion. The proposed method allows gait rehabilitation to be performed while stably satisfying ground contact constraints, even after modifying the training parameters.

Abstract:This work presents a novel rehabilitation framework designed for a therapist, wearing an inertial measurement unit (IMU) suit, to virtually interact with a lower-limb exoskeleton worn by a patient with motor impairments. This framework aims to harmonize the skills and knowledge of the therapist with the capabilities of the exoskeleton. The therapist can guide the patient's movements by moving their own joints and making real-time adjustments to meet the patient's needs, while reducing the physical effort of the therapist. This eliminates the need for a predefined trajectory for the patient to follow, as in conventional robotic gait training. For the virtual interaction medium between the therapist and patient, we propose an impedance profile that is stiff at low frequencies and less stiff at high frequencies, that can be tailored to individual patient needs and different stages of rehabilitation. The desired interaction torque from this medium is commanded to a whole-exoskeleton closed-loop compensation controller. The proposed virtual interaction framework was evaluated with a pair of unimpaired individuals in different teacher-student gait training exercises. Results show the proposed interaction control effectively transmits haptic cues, informing future applications in rehabilitation scenarios.

Abstract:Socially assistive robots are increasingly being explored to improve the engagement of older adults and people with disability in health and well-being-related exercises. However, even if people have various physical conditions, most prior work on social robot exercise coaching systems has utilized generic, predefined feedback. The deployment of these systems still remains a challenge. In this paper, we present our work of iteratively engaging therapists and post-stroke survivors to design, develop, and evaluate a social robot exercise coaching system for personalized rehabilitation. Through interviews with therapists, we designed how this system interacts with the user and then developed an interactive social robot exercise coaching system. This system integrates a neural network model with a rule-based model to automatically monitor and assess patients' rehabilitation exercises and can be tuned with individual patient's data to generate real-time, personalized corrective feedback for improvement. With the dataset of rehabilitation exercises from 15 post-stroke survivors, we demonstrated our system significantly improves its performance to assess patients' exercises while tuning with held-out patient's data. In addition, our real-world evaluation study showed that our system can adapt to new participants and achieved 0.81 average performance to assess their exercises, which is comparable to the experts' agreement level. We further discuss the potential benefits and limitations of our system in practice.

Abstract:Abstract A majority of robotic gait trainers to facilitate physical therapy for gait rehabilitation in humans are based on multi-degree-of-freedom exoskeleton-based systems with sophisticated elctromechanical hardware and software, and consequently remain inaccessible to vast sections of the populations around the world. This study seeks to advance the development of a single degree-of-freedom gait trainer for gait therapy for individuals with neuromuscular impairments. The goal is to offer a cost-effective, accessible solution to cater to the global need for rehabilitation. We build upon the initial gait trainer design presented in Yul Shin, S.(2018) and provide an in-depth analysis and experimental validation of its kinematic performance. Performance of device is also tested and successfully demonstrated through trials involving two healthy individuals to examine its kinematic behaviour under human-induced load conditions. The gait trainer demonstrates satisfactory performance under both no load conditions and a 2kg load, exhibiting an area difference of 1% and 7% respectively. However, when subjected to a 5kg loading condition, a significant area difference of 27% is observed, primarily attributed to the cantilever loading at the driving shaft. A method to adjust link lengths based on specific human gait trajectories is proposed and validated. Additionally, a cost-effective tool for ankle trajectory measurement is introduced for validation. The study demonstrates the potential of an affordable, single DOF gait trainer in facilitating high-volume therapy for those with walking disorders. This research represents a step towards making gait therapy more accessible worldwide.

Abstract:The robot-assisted therapy has been demonstrated to be effective in the improvements of limb function and even activities of daily living for patients after stroke. This paper presents an interactive upper-limb rehabilitation robot with a parallel mechanism and an isometric screen embedded in the platform to display trajectories. In the dynamic modeling for impedance control, the effects of friction and inertia are reduced by introducing the principle of virtual work and derivative of Jacobian matrix. To achieve the assist-as-needed impedance control for arbitrary trajectories, the strategy based on orthogonal deviations is proposed. Simulations and experiments were performed to validate the dynamic modeling and impedance control. Besides, to investigate the influence of the impedance in practice, a subject participated in experiments and performed two types of movements with the robot, that is, rectilinear and circular movements, under four conditions, that is, with/without resistance or impedance, respectively. The results showed that the impedance and resistance affected both mean absolute error and standard deviation of movements and also demonstrated the significant differences between movements with/without impedance and resistance (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the error patterns were discussed, which suggested that the impedance environment was capable of alleviating movement deviations by compensating the synergetic inadequacy between the shoulder and elbow joints.

Abstract:Most lower limb rehabilitation robots are limited to specific training postures to adapt to stroke patients in multiple stages of recovery. In addition, there is a lack of attention to the switching functions of the training side, including left, right, and bilateral, which enables patients with hemiplegia to rehabilitate with a single device. This article presents an exoskeleton robot named the multistage hemiplegic lower-limb rehabilitation robot, which has been designed to do rehabilitation in multiple training postures and training sides. The mechanism consisting of the thigh, calf, and foot is introduced. Additionally, the design of the multi-mode limit of the hip, knee, and ankle joints supports delivering therapy in any posture and training sides to aid patients with hemiplegia in all stages of recovery. The gait trajectory is planned by extracting the gait motion trajectory model collected by the motion capture device. In addition, a control system for the training module based on adaptive iterative learning has been simulated, and its high-precision tracking performance has been verified. The gait trajectory experiment is carried out, and the results verify that the trajectory tracking performance of the robot has good performance.

Abstract:Clinical research results demonstrated that robot-mediated training for the recovery of subjects after the stroke had the benefit of being able to carry out high-intensity repetitive and task-oriented tasks, which could effectively facilitate the rehabilitation effect. However, these subjects may have different training requirements as the disability levels vary from subject to subject at different stages of rehabilitation. Therefore, to meet the rehabilitation training needs of subjects in different rehabilitation stages, a performance-based assistance control strategy for safe robot-mediated therapy is proposed in this paper. The strategy contains three training modes that are switched by the trajectory tracking error, the zero interaction force mode (ZIF), assist-as-needed (AAN) mode, and restriction interaction region (RIR) mode. In ZIF mode, the subject can freely refer to their motion trajectory, and the robot will only offer fixed assistance only when the subject is slacking. In AAN mode, the robot would offer a variable level of assistance force by adjusting the stiffness coefficient to assist subjects in accordance with their motor abilities. To assure safety, a sizable assisting force is applied in RIR mode. To validate and evaluate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed assistance control strategy, a set of task-oriented continuous movement experiments based on an end-effector robot-mediated training system were performed by five able-bodied subjects. The preliminary experiment results demonstrated that the proposed control strategy works properly and could provide corresponding assistance and adjust the working modes according to the subject's motor performance. It was found that the robot provided more assistance as the increasing trajectory tracking error led to a decrease in motor performance. Additionally, adaptive adjustment of the stiffness coefficient allowed the proposed assistance control strategy to induce more active effort. It's worth noting that the parameters of the proposed strategy may be personalized and adjusted for different subjects to satisfy various requirements.

Abstract:Antisera have been prepared against two electrophoretically homogeneous “polypeptide chain elongation factors,” T and G, from Escherichia coli. Inactivation and precipitation tests showed that these two fractions were antigenically distinct with no cross-reaction. The immune inactivation curve of G factor from E. coli was distinguishable from that of G factor from Pseudomonas fluorescens. Mammalian factors were not inhibited by antibody directed against the E. coli T and G factors. By Ouchterlony diffusion tests, the antisera also detected significant antigenic variability among different bacterial species. It is concluded that the factors have undergone considerable evolutionary divergence in their antigenic structure.

Abstract:In the process of rehabilitation training for stroke patients, the rehabilitation effect is positively affected by how much physical activity the patients take part in. Most of the signals used to measure the patients’ participation are EMG signals or oxygen consumption, which increase the cost and the complexity of the robotic device. In this work, we design a multi-sensor system robot with torque and six-dimensional force sensors to gauge the patients’ participation in training. By establishing the static equation of the mechanical leg, the man–machine interaction force of the patient can be accurately extracted. Using the impedance model, the auxiliary force training mode is established, and the difficulty of the target task is changed by adjusting the K value of auxiliary force. Participation models with three intensities were developed offline using support vector machines, for which the C and σ parameters are optimized by the hybrid quantum particle swarm optimization and support vector machines (Hybrid QPSO-SVM) algorithm. An experimental statistical analysis was conducted on ten volunteers’ motion representation in different training tasks, which are divided into three stages: over-challenge, challenge, less challenge, by choosing characteristic quantities with significant differences among the various difficulty task stages, as a training set for the support vector machines (SVM). Experimental results from 12 volunteers, with tasks conducted on the lower limb rehabilitation robot LLR-II show that the rehabilitation robot can accurately predict patient participation and training task difficulty. The prediction accuracy reflects the superiority of the Hybrid QPSO-SVM algorithm.

Abstract:Rehabilitation therapy plays an essential role in assisting people with stroke regain arm function. Upper extremity robot therapy offers a number of advantages over manual therapies, but can suffer from slacking behavior, where the user lets the robot guide their movements even when they are capable of doing so by themselves, representing a major barrier to reaching the full potential of robot-assist rehabilitation. This is a pilot clinical study that investigates the use of an electromyography-based adaptive assist-as-needed controller to avoid slacking behavior during robotic rehabilitation for people with stroke. The study involved a convenience sample of five individuals with chronic stroke who underwent a robot therapy program utilizing horizontal arm tasks. The Fugl-Meyer assessment (FM) was used to document motor impairment status at baseline. Velocity, time, and position were quantified as performance parameters during the training. Arm and shoulder surface electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) were used to assess the controller's performance. The cross-sectional results showed strong second-order relationships between FM score and outcome measures, where performance metrics (path length and accuracy) were sensitive to change in participants with lower functional status. In comparison, speed, EMG and EEG metrics were more sensitive to change in participants with higher functional status. EEG signal amplitude increased when the robot suggested that the robot was inducing a challenge during the training tasks. This study highlights the importance of multi-sensor integration to monitor and improve upper-extremity robotic therapy.

Abstract:The research of a socially assistive robot has a potential to augment and assist physical therapy sessions for patients with neurological and musculoskeletal problems (e.g. stroke). During a physical therapy session, generating personalized feedback is critical to improve patient's engagement. However, prior work on socially assistive robotics for physical therapy has mainly utilized pre-defined corrective feedback even if patients have various physical and functional abilities. This paper presents an interactive approach of a socially assistive robot that can dynamically select kinematic features of assessment on individual patient's exercises to predict the quality of motion and provide patient-specific corrective feedback for personalized interaction of a robot exercise coach.

Abstract:Wearable robots are emerging as a viable and effective solution for assisting and enabling people who suffer from balance and mobility disorders. Virtual prototyping is a powerful tool to design robots, preventing the costly iterative physical prototyping and testing. Design of wearable robots through modelling, however, often involves computationally expensive and error-prone multi-body simulations wrapped in an optimization framework to simulate human–robot–environment interactions. This paper proposes a framework to make the human–robot link segment system statically determinate, allowing for the closed-form inverse dynamics formulation of the link–segment model to be solved directly in order to simulate human–robot dynamic interactions. The paper also uses a technique developed by the authors to estimate the walking ground reactions from reference kinematic data, avoiding the need to measure them. The proposed framework is (a) computationally efficient and (b) transparent and easy to interpret, and (c) eliminates the need for optimization, detailed musculoskeletal modelling and measuring ground reaction forces for normal walking simulations. It is used to optimise the position of hip and ankle joints and the actuator torque–velocity requirements for a seven segments of a lower-limb wearable robot that is attached to the user at the shoes and pelvis. Gait measurements were carried out on six healthy subjects, and the data were used for design optimization and validation. The new technique promises to offer a significant advance in the way in which wearable robots can be designed.

Feasibility and Usability of a Robot-Assisted Complex Upper and Lower Limb Rehabilitation System in Patients with Stroke: A Pilot Study

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the feasibility and usability of cost-effective complex upper and lower limb robot-assisted gait training in patients with stroke using the GTR-A, a foot-plate based end-effector type robotic device.Methods Patients with subacute stroke (n=9) were included in this study. The enrolled patients received 30-minute robot-assisted gait training thrice a week for 2 weeks (6 sessions). The hand grip strength, functional ambulation categories, modified Barthel index, muscle strength test sum score, Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go Test, and Short Physical Performance Battery were used as functional assessments. The heart rate was measured to evaluate cardiorespiratory fitness. A structured questionnaire was used to evaluate the usability of robot-assisted gait training. All the parameters were evaluated before and after the robot-assisted gait training program.Results Eight patients completed robot-assisted gait training, and all parameters of functional assessment significantly improved between baseline and posttraining, except for hand grip strength and muscle strength test score. The mean scores for each domain of the questionnaire were as follows: safety, 4.40±0.35; effects, 4.23±0.31; efficiency, 4.22±0.77; and satisfaction, 4.41±0.25.Conclusion Thus, the GTR-A is a feasible and safe robotic device for patients with gait impairment after stroke, resulting in improvement of ambulatory function and performance of activities of daily living with endurance training. Further research including various diseases and larger sample groups is necessary to verify the utility of this device.
The effect of stride length on lower extremity joint kinetics at various gait speeds

Abstract:Robot-assisted training is a promising tool under development for improving walking function based on repetitive goal-oriented task practice. The challenges in developing the controllers for gait training devices that promote desired changes in gait is complicated by the limited understanding of the human response to robotic input. A possible method of controller formulation can be based on the principle of bio-inspiration, where a robot is controlled to apply the change in joint moment applied by human subjects when they achieve a gait feature of interest. However, it is currently unclear how lower extremity joint moments are modulated by even basic gait spatio-temporal parameters. In this study, we investigated how sagittal plane joint moments are affected by a factorial modulation of two important gait parameters: gait speed and stride length. We present the findings obtained from 20 healthy control subjects walking at various treadmill-imposed speeds and instructed to modulate stride length utilizing real-time visual feedback. Implementing a continuum analysis of inverse-dynamics derived joint moment profiles, we extracted the effects of gait speed and stride length on joint moment throughout the gait cycle. Moreover, we utilized a torque pulse approximation analysis to determine the timing and amplitude of torque pulses that approximate the difference in joint moment profiles between stride length conditions, at all gait speed conditions. Our results show that gait speed has a significant effect on the moment profiles in all joints considered, while stride length has more localized effects, with the main effect observed on the knee moment during stance, and smaller effects observed for the hip joint moment during swing and ankle moment during the loading response. Moreover, our study demonstrated that trailing limb angle, a parameter of interest in programs targeting propulsion at push-off, was significantly correlated with stride length. As such, our study has generated assistance strategies based on pulses of torque suitable for implementation via a wearable exoskeleton with the objective of modulating stride length, and other correlated variables such as trailing limb angle.

Abstract:The rising number of the elderly incurs growing concern about healthcare, and in particular rehabilitation healthcare. Assistive technology and assistive robotics in particular may help to improve this process. We develop a robot coach capable of demonstrating rehabilitation exercises to patients, watch a patient carry out the exercises and give him feedback so as to improve his performance and encourage him. The HRI of the system is based on our study with a team of rehabilitation therapists and with the target population.The system relies on human motion analysis. We develop a method for learning a probabilistic representation of ideal movements from expert demonstrations. A Gaussian Mixture Model is employed from position and orientation features captured using a Microsoft Kinect v2. For assessing patients' movements, we propose a real-time multi-level analysis to both temporally and spatially identify and explain body part errors. This analysis combined with a classification algorithm allows the robot to provide coaching advice to make the patient improve his movements. The evaluation on three rehabilitation exercises shows the potential of the proposed approach for learning and assessing kinaesthetic movements.

Abstract:The 6-min walk distance (6MWD) and the Fugl-Meyer assessment lower-limb subscale (FMA-LE) of the stroke patients provide the critical evaluation standards for the effect of training and guidance of the training programs. However, gait assessment for stroke patients typically relies on manual observation and table scoring, which raises concerns about wasted manpower and subjective observation results. To address this issue, this paper proposes an intelligent rehabilitation assessment method (IRAM) for rehabilitation assessment of the stroke patients based on sensor data of the lower limb exoskeleton robot. Firstly, the feature parameters of the patient were collected, including age, height, and duration, etc. The sensor data of the exoskeleton robot were also collected, including joint angle, joint velocity, and joint torque, etc. Secondly, a gait feature model was constructed to deduce the walking gait parameters of the patient according to the sensor data of the exoskeleton, including the support phase to swing phase ratio, step length and leg lift height of the patient, etc. Then, the 6MWD and FMA-LE values were collected by traditional methods, feature parameters, gait parameters and human-machine interaction parameters (joint torque) of the patient were adopted to train the rehabilitation assessment model. Finally, the assessment model was trained by a machine-learning based algorithm. The new stroke patients' the 6MWD and FMA-LE values can be predicted by the trained model. The experimental results present that the prediction accuracy for the 6MWD and FMA-LE values reach to 85.19% and 92.66%, respectively.
Data-driven Characterization of Human Interaction for Model-based Control of Powered Prostheses

Abstract:This paper proposes a data-driven method for powered prosthesis control that achieves stable walking without the need for additional sensors on the human. The key idea is to extract the nominal gait and the human interaction information from motion capture data, and reconstruct the walking behavior with a dynamic model of the human-prosthesis system. The walking behavior of a human wearing a powered prosthesis is obtained through motion capture, which yields the limb and joint trajectories. Then a nominal trajectory is obtained by solving a gait optimization problem designed to reconstruct the walking behavior observed by motion capture. Moreover, the interaction force profiles between the human and the prosthesis are recovered by simulating the model following the recorded gaits, which are then used to construct a force tube that covers all the interaction force profiles. Finally, a robust Control Lyapunov Function (CLF) Quadratic Programming (QP) controller is designed to guarantee the convergence to the nominal trajectory under all possible interaction forces within the tube. Simulation results show this controller’s improved tracking performance with a perturbed force profile compared to other control methods with less model information.
