Abstract:Depending on the environmental conditions, surface sediments can retain all the contaminants present and provide a record of the anthropic activities affecting the aquatic environment. In order to analyze the impacts on reservoirs, surface sediments were collected in three characteristic regions (riverine, transitional, and limnetic zones) of seven reservoirs in São Paulo State, Brazil. Analyses were made of grain size, organic matter (OM), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN). Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) was used to determine pseudo-total and bioavailable metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Al). A Horiba probe was used to measure dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, redox potential (ORP), and temperature (Temp) in the bottom water. The data were analyzed using multivariate statistics. Enrichment factors (EF), pollution load index values (PLI), and background values (BG) were also determined in order to evaluate the potential toxicity. Intra-reservoir and inter-reservoir spatial heterogeneity (p < 0.05) were observed using two-way analysis of similarities. Principal component analysis indicated greater influence of metals in the Barra Bonita, Salto Grande, and Rio Grande reservoirs, corroborating the PLI, EF, and BG data. Bioavailable Cu was found in the Rio Grande reservoir, possibly associated with copper sulfate used to control algal blooms, while bioavailable Ni in the Barra Bonita reservoir was attributed to the presence of industrial wastes and natural geology. The bottom water conditions indicated that the metals remained in insoluble forms.

Abstract:In November 2015, the Fundão Dam break released millions of tons of metal-rich tailings into the Doce River Basin (DRB), causing catastrophic damage and potential ecological effects that reached the Atlantic Ocean. This study aimed to evaluate the geochemistry and toxicity of water and sediments collected in the DRB from 2015 to 2019 and to determine the spatial and temporal trends. Water and sediment samples were analyzed for metals and As by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), and acute toxicity for Daphnia similis or D. magna . Results were explored using geochemical indices and correlation analyzes. Overall, higher concentrations of metals and As in water and sediments were observed immediately after dam breakage, but the levels exhibited a decreasing trend over time, although the levels of some elements such as As and Mn remained high in the upper DRB. The geochemical indices indicated mostly low to moderate contamination, and the enrichment factor (EF) demonstrated a higher enrichment of Mn in the upper DRB. Acute toxicity to water fleas ( D. similis and D. magna ) was occasionally observed in waters and sediments, but the reference samples were toxic, and the short-term effects were not correlated with metals and As. Overall, the results showed limited bioavailability of metals and As and a decreasing trend in their concentrations, indicating an ongoing recovery process in DRB. These results are important to decision-making regarding the disaster and actions for environmental restoration.

Abstract:The present study deals with one of the worst environmental disasters in Brazil so far, the failure of the Fundão tailing dam in the city of Mariana (MG) in 2015. The disaster released over 39.2 million cubic meters of iron ore mining tailings into the Doce River, reaching the southeast coast of Brazil. Data from trace metals and iron in seafloor sediments from Espírito Santo Continental Shelf (ESCS) were evaluated before the disaster and 1 year and 6 months after it. Results revealed contamination of shelf sediments with Zn, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cu and Fe before the disaster, and a noticeable increase in concentrations after the dam failure. Post-disaster, values of geoaccumulation index (NIgeo) for Zn and Fe as high as 8 and 25 were reached, respectively, classifying the samples as extremely polluted. The modified degree of contamination (mCd) values surpassed 32 at many stations which are classified as ultrahigh contaminated. The study also documents the increase of fine material deposition in the study area. Grain size trend analysis (GSTA) corroborated the increase of metal concentrations and mCd values toward the north of Doce River mouth and also at MPA—Costa das Algas.

Abstract:The rupture of the Fundão dam released about 50 million m 3 of mining tailings in the Doce river basin. To assess the potential for environmental contamination and the risks of residual exposure of the human population generated by these tailings, water and fish samples from the Doce river were collected 25 days after the accident and analyzed the physicochemical parameters of the water and levels of metals by ICP-MS, in addition to the temporal variability of the concentration of these elements through other studies. This was the first study to carry out an assessment of the health risk associated with the consumption of fish contaminated by metals from the areas affected by the disaster. The values of turbidity (5460 NTU), electrical conductivity (74.8 μS cm −1 ), total dissolved solids (892 mg L −1 ) and total suspended solids (772 mg L −1 ) were above the maximum limit allowed by Brazilian legislation, due to the presence of large amounts of solid materials released after the dam rupture. The analysis of metals in water samples indicated high concentrations of Al (1,906.71 μg L −1 ), Mn (370.32 μg L −1 ), Fe (8,503.50 μg L −1 ) and Hg (34.25 μg L −1 ), while for the fish samples, only As (1,033.98 μg kg −1 ) and Hg (herbivorous: 505.32 μg kg −1 ; predatory: 1,184.09 μg kg −1 ) presented levels above those established by Brazilian legislation. The health risk assessment showed that the estimated daily intake for Hg was higher than the reference dose, reinforcing the need for monitoring the area affected by the disaster.

Abstract:On November 2015, Samarco tailings dam in Mariana MG, Brazil, collapsed, releasing 62 million tons of tailings that advanced through 668 km of the Doce River and adjacent floodplain. Although being the worst environmental disaster in Brazil, little is known about consequences to aquatic biota. Here we evaluate the effects of the tailings mudflow on metal and arsenic concentration in fish and how concentration correlates with water and fish characteristics. We quantified semitotal amounts of Ag, Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in fish muscle tissue using ICP‐MS in 255 individuals (34 species) sampled in unaffected and affected along the Doce River basin. Arsenic and Hg were higher in fish from affected sites, likely due to turbulent mixing of previously sedimented material by the giant tailings wave. Silver and Zn concentrations were higher in unaffected sites. Arsenic concentration in Geophagus brasiliensis decreased with increasing fish weight. Copper and Zn decreased with increasing fish weight considering the whole assembly of fish. The tailings mudflow increased water conductivity and conductivity increased Al concentration in fish, so we expected a larger Al concentration in fishes from affected sites. However, the observed Al concentration in fishes from affected sites was lower than expected by water conductivity. Thus, the tailings mudflow reduced Al uptake or accumulation in fishes. Mercury decreased with increasing water conductivity in both unaffected and affected sites considering all species and in G. brasiliensis alone. Despite the relatively low concentration range of metals and As found in fish, fishes from sites affected by the iron ore tailings mudflow showed higher As and Hg concentration, compared to fishes from unaffected sites. The higher As and Hg in affected sites require further detailed monitoring to ensure safeguards of human health by fishing activity along the Doce River.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:This study consists of an ecotoxicological assessment related to one the most important environmental Brazilian disasters: the failure of an iron mining dam of the Vale S.A. in Brumadinho (Minas Gerais State, Brazil). Tailing samples (mixed with many other materials) were collected in three areas: (i) Zona Quente (n = 9) – close to the dam collapse; (ii) Parque das Cachoeiras (n = 3) – downstream of the Zona Quente; and (iii) Alberto Flores (n = 3), closer to Paraopeba river (an important tributary of one of the most important Brazilian watersheds). Acute ecotoxicological tests with Eisenia andrei and Daphnia similis and chronic reproduction tests with Folsomia candida and Chlorella vulgaris were performed. The bioassays with aquatic organisms were carried out with elutriates of the samples. Metal concentrations and physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of the samples were determined to support the interpretation of the ecotoxicological data. The increase of the particle density values (significantly correlated to an anomalous iron-enrichment and positive ΔpH values) seem to play a relevant role in the toxicity. As a result of iron-enrichment, the reduction of organic matter contents and water holding capacity were also crucial in the toxicity. Metal-enrichment factors showed abnormally high values, especially for Fe, Mn and Ni, while toxic metals concentrations exceeded the limits established by Brazilian law. Reproduction chronic effects were more intense than the acute ones, for both aquatic and soil organisms. Such extremely low reproduction levels of F. candida and C. vulgaris should be highlighted, since such organisms have a key ecological relevance. The samples collected in the Zona Quente were significantly different from the samples collected in downstream areas — fact that might be related to a high energy and turbulent flux of tailings in zones closer to dam, and the reduction of its energy in downstream areas.

Abstract:On November 5, 2015, after the collapse of the Fundão tailings dam, a massive amount of iron mine waste was released into the Doce River system in southeast Brazil. The aim of our study was to determine the mass fractions of potentially toxic elements in soil affected by the deposition of material by the waste wave. A preliminary screening was performed with portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (PXRF) and principal component analysis (PCA). The EPA 3050B method was further applied to digest the samples for quantitative determination of As, Ba, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. PCA was useful to classify the mine waste samples based on the Fe signal from the PXRF spectra, in spite of the heterogeneous nature of the material discharged into the Doce River system. The anomalous levels of As (up to 164 mg kg−1) and Mn (as high as 2410 mg kg−1) found in some mine waste and affected soil samples are within the background ranges typically observed in the soils of the Iron Quadrangle region. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure shows no evidence of hazards regarding As, but a high natural background level of Mn was found in the mobile fraction. This preliminary environmental assessment highlights the importance of evaluation of long-term effects on soil directly impacted, as well as on the aquatic biota of the Doce River system and adjacent coastal environment given the large affected area, which includes regions with varying background levels of toxic elements.

Abstract:In 2015, >50 million cubic meters of Fe mining tailings were released into the Doce River basin from the Fundão dam, raising the question of its consequences on the affected ecosystems. This study aimed to establish a mineralogical-(geo)chemical association of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from Fe mining tailings from the Fundão dam, collected seven days after the failure, through a multidisciplinary approach combining assessment of the risk to human health, environmental geochemistry, and mineralogy. Thus, eleven tailings samples were collected with the support of the Brazilian Military Police Fire Department. Granulometry, magnetic measurements, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and sequential chemical extraction of PTEs analyses were performed. Contamination indexes, assessment of risk to human health, and Pearson correlation were calculated using the results of sequential chemical extraction of PTEs. The predominance of goethite in Fe oxyhydroxide concentrates from the mud indicates that the major source of hematite may not be from tailings, but from pre-existing soils and sediments, and/or preferential dissolution of hematite in deep flooded zones of the tailings column of the Fundão dam. Moreover, the high correlation of most carcinogenic PTEs with their crystallographic variables indicates that goethite is the primary source of contaminants. Goethites from Fe mining tailings showed high specific surface area and Al-substitution, and due to their greater stability and reactivity, the impacts on PTE sorption phenomena and bioavailability may be maintained for long periods. However, their lower dissolution rate, and the consequent release of heavy metals would promote greater resilience for affected ecosystems, preventing significant PTE inputs under periodic reduction conditions. More specific studies, involving the crystallographic characteristics of Fe oxyhydroxides should be developed since they may provide another critical component of this set of complex and dynamic variables that interfere with the bioavailability of metals in ecosystems.
Integrated environmental assessment of iron ore tailings in floodplain soils and plants after the Fundão Dam disaster in Brazil

Abstract:Previous studies of the Doce River basin (Brazil) seem to be contradictory regarding the contamination of soils with potentially harmful elements (PHE). This research aimed to perform an integrated assessment of PHE in the soil-plant-tailing system from the area most affected by the iron waste after the Fundão Dam disaster in 2015. Different fractions of PHE (exchangeable, nonexchangeable, reducible, and pseudo-total) were determined on deposited iron waste (DIW), soil waste mixture (SWM), and control soil (CS) samples. Total contents of PHE in Poaceae were also determined, and Allium cepa bioassays were performed to determine DIW and CS cytotoxicity and/or genotoxicity to plants. The Fe and Mn contaminations were the only ones related to the deposition of DIW on floodplains, and other harmful element content (such as As, Hg, Ni, Cd, Cr, and Pb) was not found above baseline values for soils. In addition, a significant part of the Fe and Mn in DIW is readily available or subject to acidification and prolonged flood reduction processes. The high available content of Fe favored its excessive accumulation by Brachiaria. The DIW chemical conditions reduced biological functions of A. cepa under a controlled environment. However, more drastic effects, such as genetic damage, were not seen. The postdisaster action of covering DIW with CS resulted in undesirable enrichment of Pb on the floodplain soils. The integrated results allow the conclusion that the iron waste is not a time bomb for PHE contamination of soils between the Fundão and Risoleta Neves Hydroelectric Dam (~100 km away from Fundão). Presence of two suctorian ciliate species of the genera Acineta and Pelagacineta, epibionts on marine copepod crustaceans.

Abstract:Acineta arcachoniensis sp. nov., a new species of protist suctorian epibiont on the copepod Chiridius gracilis is described. The individuals show two well-developed actinophores, with two fascicles of capitate tentacles, an irregular nucleus, a cup-shaped lorica and a short stalk. Reproduction of A. arcachoniensis is by endogenous budding. The suctorians are located on the base of the antennae, the final abdominal segments or on the last pereiopod pair of the copepod. In addition, a new registration of the suctorian Pelagacineta euchaetae on the copepod Calanus helgolandicus is recorded.
Case studies of assessment of human health risks after the dam failures of the Córrego do Feijão Mine and Fundão in Brazil

Abstract:In recent years, there has been an increase in environmental catastrophes involving mining dam failures. This study assessed the potential risks of iron ore tailings in riparian soils to human health after the worst dam collapses recorded in Brazil: from Córrego do Feijão Mine-CFM and Fundão. Chemical monitoring data from the three-year time interval since the collapses were used to estimate human risk indexes for trace elements such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, nickel, lead, and zinc. In both case studies, the adult group indicated a propensity for the development of non-carcinogenic diseases through ingestion, inhalation and dermal pathways for all contaminated areas. Overall, children showed an exacerbated sensitivity to possible cancerous and non-cancerous effects, especially in the areas surrounding the dams and in Barra Longa, São José do Goiabal, Córrego Novo, Veneza, Periquito, Governador Valadares, Tumiritinga, Conselheiro Pena, Honório Fraga and Linhares (from the Fundão dam) and in all study areas from the CFM dam. These assessments demonstrate that in regions with mining activities, the cumulative effects of trace elements over time are harmful and expected. Therefore, there is a need for greater supervision by competent government bodies of conservation practices that enable environmental recovery or mitigation of their impacts, ensuring appropriate health and well-being conditions for local residents and workers.

Abstract:Iron ore tailings are stored in large dams and pose risks to the environment around the world. In Brazil, the rupture of these dams has become frequent and has generated environmental and social concern. Rare earth elements are good tracers of sediment sources and our results indicated chronic contamination of the seabed sediment from the marine region affected by the Fundão Dam tailings since 2015, including areas of environmental protection. This research, carried out between November 2018 and September 2021, with a database of 575 samples, showed a greater amount of contaminated material in the marine region adjacent to the Doce River mouth. Although data suggest prior mining contamination of the Doce River basin, the Fundão episode was an empirical and massive example of the environmental damage caused by these human activities over the centuries, showing that the impact remains in the shallow marine environments for years. Abstract:The rupture of an iron mining tailing dam in Brumadinho, Brazil, released around 10 million cubic meters of tailings, of which 1.6 Mm3 reached the Paraopeba River. In this work, a total of 30 samples from three bottom sediment cores were collected in the lower course of the Paraopeba River basin and analyzed for major, trace and rare earth elements by ICP-OES and ICP-MS. The sediments presented a range of compositions with different weathering histories, overall marked by depleted Ca2+, Na+ and K+ compared with the average UCC, PAAS and NASC and some advanced weathering trends. The samples presented a fractionation pattern characterized by a continuous depletion of light REEs from La to Sm and a regular decreased distribution of heavy REEs from Gd to Yb, and the Co/Th vs. La/Sc diagram indicates a predominant intermediate source. The upper samples presented the highest contents of REEs, probably due to the higher presence of iron and aluminum oxides and hydroxides, which can be related to more advanced weathering. The Al, Cu, Ni, V, Zn, Co, Mn, Ti, Fe and Si concentrations and the CF, EF and Igeo index values varied across the sediment core samples, demonstrating that there were long periods of geogenic or anthropogenic contributions.

Abstract:The Sepetiba Bay (Southeast Brazil) is a known Cd- and Zn-contaminated site that received spills of a large slag pile leachate from a Zn smelter. With important harbors, Sepetiba Bay demands periodic dredging operations which affect the mobility of the metals. The main goal of this work was to assess metal mobility in sediments and its associated toxicity in a fictive dredging area, to evaluate the risks of the operation. To achieve this goal, 18 superficial sediment samples were collected and characterized for pH and Eh. Sediments were analyzed for grain size, organic carbon, and total nitrogen, and metal mobility was evaluated with a sequential extraction procedure, proposed by the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR). The results demonstrate that Cd and Zn are mainly associated with the exchangeable fraction (mean concentrations 1.4 mg kg −1 and 149.4 mg kg −1 , respectively) and reducible fractions (mean concentrations 0.3 mg kg −1 and 65.5 mg kg −1 , respectively), while Fe, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Al were associated with the residual fraction. Metals in the residual fraction are probably associated with the mineral lattice of the sediment and should not represent an environmental risk for the biota. The application of the enrichment factor and three risk assessment indexes (Risk Assessment Code, Risky Pollution Index, and Bioavailability Risk Assessment Index) show that the sediments are considerably enriched in metals that constitute a relevant risk for the sediment biota. In the case of dredging operations, Cd and Zn should be released to the overlying waters and be available to organisms, threatening the whole ecosystem. The proposed approach was shown to be much more precise than what is frequently presented in the Environmental Impact Assessments that only consider the threshold limits of the legislation.

Abstract:Tailings dam failures increase the load of fine sediments in downstream rivers. These disasters are recurrent in the history of mining, altering the functioning of the river system and having long-lasting geochemical impacts on ecosystems. In Brazil, the failure of the Brumadinho tailings dam in 2019 altered the geomorphology and geochemistry of the Ferro Carvão stream and the Paraopeba River. To date, the dredging activities continue to alter the fluvial dynamics and affect the sedimentation rate of the river. The tailings are still on the banks of the river. This work aimed to analyse the dispersion of the tailings flows in the Paraopeba River and the geochemical impact on water, sediment, and soil after the failure of the iron ore tailings dam in Brumadinho, Brazil. Surface water, sediment, and soil samples were collected at sites downstream and upstream of the dam failure site for chemical and mineralogical analysis. The results show that the water has low concentrations of Fe, Al, and Mn. The sediment and soil samples downstream of the disaster have a higher concentration of Mn than at the upstream site. There was an association between Mn, Sb, and Cd in the sediment and soil samples. The effects of the passage of the tailings from the dam failure are still impacting the affected areas.

Abstract:The Doce River Basin (DRB) suffers with the adverse impacts of mining activities, due to its high level of urbanization and numerous industrial operations. In this study, we present novel insights into contaminant flow dynamics, seasonal variations, and the primary factors driving concentration levels within the region. We conducted an extensive analysis using a database sourced from the literature, which contained data on the contamination of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in the Doce River. Our primary aim was to investigate the patterns of As and Pb flow throughout the entire basin, their response to seasonal fluctuations, and the key parameters influencing their concentration levels. The results showed significant seasonal fluctuations in As and Pb fluxes, peaking during the rainy season. The 2015 Fundão dam breach in the DRB led to notable changes, elevating elemental concentrations, particularly As and Pb, which were subsequently transported to the Atlantic Ocean. These increased concentrations were primarily associated with iron and manganese oxides, hydroxides, and sulfates, rather than precipitation, as evidenced by regressions with low R 2 values for both As ( R 2 = 0.07) and Pb ( R 2 < 0.001), concerning precipitation. The PCA analysis further supports the connection between these elements and the oxides and hydroxides of Fe and Mn. The approach employed in this study has proven to be highly effective in comprehending biogeochemical phenomena by leveraging data from the literature and could be a model for optimizing resources by capitalizing on existing information to provide valuable insights for drainage basin management, particularly during crises.

Abstract:Environmental reference conditions (RC) and historical trends are crucial for assessing the degree of freshwater impact and formulating restoration measures. This is particularly relevant for freshwater systems used as potable water sources. Using sediments from the Carlos Maggiolo reservoir (Minas, Uruguay), located in a watershed with a mining history, this study aimed to (1) establish metal (As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) RC using a predicted interval (PI) chemometric technique; (2) evaluate metal enrichment and toxicity over time and space; and (3) assess environmental changes examining geochemical proxies. Surface sediments from 29 stations were used to establish RC and a core from the dam area was sampled to infer past conditions. The sediments were submitted to partial digestion and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry- ICP-OES. Enrichment factor (EF) calculated using both PI and bottom core values did not show significant differences over time. Over space and time, most metals primarily originated from natural sources (EF < 2). The PI in mg/kg was Cr: 23.74-37.32; Cu: 25.75-48.99; Ni: 16.29-25.55; Pb: 7.63-13.75; and Zn: 94.34-174.80. A stratigraphically constrained cluster analysis corroborated by a permutational multivariate analysis of variance categorized the reservoir into two zones: Zone I, before reservoir operation to ~ 1996, and Zone II from ~ 1997 to 2017. The average concentrations of the main metals of toxicological interest in zones I and II, respectively, were as follows: Cr 37.60 ± 1.59, 34.54 ± 1.49 mg/kg; Cu 49.76 ± 2.84, 44.55 ± 2.70 mg/kg; Ni 24.11 ± 0.67, 22.53 ± 1.22 mg/kg; Pb 12.40 ± 0.63, 13.52 ± 0.82 mg/kg; Zn 99.25 ± 3.12, 93.86 ± 4.42 mg/kg; Mn 1160.56 ± 68.88, 1441.61 ± 83.55 mg/kg; and P 1243.21 ± 271.56, 1128.42 ± 183.10 mg/kg. According to a principal component analysis, the period preceding reservoir operation until ~ 1985 was linked to mining activities and application of Cu2SO4, and the period from 1985s to 2000 was influenced by C and P concentrations due to increasing agricultural and afforestation activities in the watershed that consume P fertilizers. The most recent period, from 2000 to ~ 2017, was characterized by an increase in sedimentation rates mainly associated with erosion, particularly in the agricultural areas. This subsequent soil loss in the watershed could compromise the reservoir's useful life. This study contributes to a better understanding of metal geochemistry in subtropical reservoirs and aids in formulating effective recovery and restoration measures.
Ecological thresholds of periphytic communities and ecosystems integrity in lower Doce River basin

Abstract:Freshwater biodiversity has been impacted by several stressors such as eutrophication, turbidity and metals. Besides these frequent impacts, large-scale accidents occasionally affect aquatic systems, input an intense load of contaminants to the water bodies, as in the case of the Fundão tailing dam collapse (Brazil), which launched millions of meters cubic of iron ore tailing in the Doce River Basin. Our aim in this study was to assess how much stress the environmental conditions of lentic and lotic environments in the lower region of this basin impact the periphytic community. In addition, we intend to verify whether the limits of changes of the periphytic communities agreed with Brazilian legislation for the protection of aquatic life. For that, monthly samplings were carried out in seven sampling stations in lentic environments and five in lotic environments, including the Doce River channel, between October/2018 and March/2021 (except in October/2019). Concentrations of metals (iron, aluminum, manganese and chromium), total nitrogen, total phosphorus, conductivity, and suspended particulate material were determined. The periphytic community was collected from natural substrates (macrophytes or pebbles) and quantified by the sedimentation chamber method. From these data, thresholds of concentrations of variables that caused changes in periphytic communities were determined by the Threshold Indicator Taxa ANalysis (TITAN). We concluded that evidence of chronic impact of iron ore tailing should be revealed and that the standards established by Brazilian legislation may be incompatible with the protection of aquatic life. Moreover, we found that the Doce River mouth and surrounding environments were the most stressful environments for the periphytic communities.

Abstract:This study aimed to establish the longitudinal gradient and historical trends of arsenic and metals in a tropical reservoir. Water and sediment samples were collected along the Rio Bonito reservoir (Espírito Santo, Brazil), and a sediment core was obtained from the lacustrine zone. Plasma spectrometric techniques were employed to determine concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Pb in water and sediment samples, and the sediment samples were dated using high-resolution gamma spectrometry. Higher concentrations of elements were observed in surface water samples from the riverine zone and bottom water samples from the transition zone. Concerning surface sediment samples, elevated concentrations were noted in the transition and lacustrine zones, where deposition is more intense. The sediment core was dated to 1940, before the reservoir dam construction, utilizing 210Pb dating. Certain elements exhibited progressively increasing concentrations over time. Enrichment factor, pollution load, and ecological risk indexes indicated the need for continuous monitoring of this reservoir
