Abstract:The present paper exhibits a real time assessment of a robust Energy Management Strategy (EMS) for battery-super capacitor (SC) Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS). The proposed algorithm, dedicated to an electric vehicular application, is based on a self-gain scheduled controller, which guarantees the H∞ performance for a class of linear parameter varying (LPV) systems. Assuming that the duty cycle of the involved DC-DC converters are considered as the variable parameters, that can be captured in real time, and forwarded to the controller to ensure both; the performance and robustness of the closed-loop system. The subsequent controller is therefore time-varying and it is automatically scheduled according to each parameter variation. This algorithm has been validated through experimental results provided by a tailor-made test bench including both the HESS and the vehicle traction emulation system. The experimental results demonstrate the overall stability of the system, where the proposed LPV supervisor successfully accomplishes a power frequency splitting in an adequate way, respecting the dynamic of the sources. The proposed solution provides significant performances for different speed levels.

Abstract:This article considers intelligent fuel cell/battery hybrid vehicles (FCHVs) that can make autonomous decisions at both the vehicle and powertrain levels. Since the vehicle and powertrain level dynamics are inherently integrated, we propose an integrated motion and powertrain model predictive control approach for intelligent FCHVs by jointly optimizing the vehicle acceleration and fuel cell current. The control goals are to achieve vehicle mobility, minimal hydrogen consumption, and battery state-of-charge maintenance within system constraints. The main challenge in an integrated control is that the electric motor can operate in both propelling and generating modes coupling with vehicle and powertrain states. This hybrid operation is handled by the mixed logical dynamical modeling resulting in a mixed integer nonlinear control problem. To relieve the possible heavy computational burden, two simplification approaches are proposed: hierarchical control and successive linearizations. Two standard driving cycles and a typical vehicle cruising scenario are employed to test the effectiveness of the proposed modeling and control algorithms. Simulation results show that the hierarchical linear control is more suitable for real-time applications with comparable control performance with that of the integrated control. However, additional constraints must be carefully designed to compensate for the ignored coupling dynamics and constraints.
Energy management and control of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle charging stations in a grid-connected hybrid power system

Abstract:The charging infrastructure plays a key role in the healthy and rapid development of the electric vehicle industry. This paper presents an energy management and control system of an electric vehicle charging station. The charging station (CS) is integrated to a grid-connected hybrid power system having a wind turbine maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controlled subsystem, photovoltaic (PV) MPPT controlled subsystem and a controlled solid oxide fuel cell with electrolyzer subsystem which are characterized as renewable energy sources. In this article, an energy management system is designed for charging and discharging of five different plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) simultaneously to fulfil the grid-to-vehicle (G2V), vehicle-to-grid (V2G), grid-to-battery storage system (G2BSS), battery storage system-to-grid (BSS2G), battery storage system-to-vehicle (BSS2V), vehicle-to-battery storage system (V2BSS) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging and discharging requirements of the charging station. A simulation test-bed in Matlab/Simulink is developed to evaluate and control adaptively the AC-DC-AC converter of non-renewable energy source, DC-DC converters of the storage system, DC-AC grid side inverter and the converters of the CS using adaptive proportional-integral-derivate (AdapPID) control paradigm. The effectiveness of the AdapPID control strategy is validated through simulation results by comparing with conventional PID control scheme.

Abstract:Nowadays, most of the works are based on electric vehicle usage for sustainable transportation using traditional energy storage device, such as battery. Usage of batteries in electric vehicles is having several disadvantages, for example, life span, temperature, and charge estimation. In this paper, a novel control scheme for battery and supercapacitor- (SC-) based hybrid energy storage system (HESS) using hybrid proportional and integral- (PI-) sliding mode control (SMC) for electric vehicle (EV) applications is introduced and implemented. This HESS with hybrid controller proves the usage of batteries in EVs to its fullest potential. The conventional control strategy for HESS follows two-loop voltage and current PI controllers with low-pass filter (LPF) and involves tuning of multiple control parameters with variations of source and load disturbances. Performance of the system is affected by tuning PI controller constants. A slow response time with linear PI controllers is long which is not advisable for starting and sudden jerk conditions of EVs. Moreover, the PI controller performance is affected by the system parameter variations during load changes. And these parameters are dynamic in nature due to nonideal conditions. In this paper, a hybrid PI-sliding mode controller (SMC) scheme is designed to control the bidirectional DC-DC converters to overcome the drawbacks of aforementioned issues. The combined PI-SMC controller reduces the tuning effort and reduces the effect of shift in operating point in controller performance. Linear modeling is done using small signal analysis for each subsystems. Permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is used as electric vehicle. The entire system and its controllers are simulated using MATLAB-Simulink, and detailed comparison is carried between conventional PI and proposed hybrid PI-SMC scheme to regulate the DC link voltage. The results are tabulated and show that the hybrid PI-SMC scheme outperforms in transient and steady-state conditions than the traditional PI controller. A scaled hardware prototype of 48 W set-up is developed using dSPACE-1104, and the experimental results have been carried out to verify the proposed system’s feasibility.

Abstract:Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are becoming increasingly widespread due to the environmental and economic benefits. However, high penetration of PHEVs may overload a electricity grid at peak hours and increase charging costs for PHEVs. In this paper, we first formulate the PHEVs charging coordination problem as a two-stage constrained optimization problem. Then we develop an optimal charge control scheme to solve this optimization problem within two stages. In the first stage, the demand-side management (DSM) principle is adopted to flatten the power demand curve on low-voltage transformer (LVT) controller in the electricity grid. In the second stage, the consensus-based algorithm is applied to minimize the total costs for PHEVs charging. The advantages of the proposed scheme are that it achieves the minimized total charging cost for all PHEVs while flattening the power demand curves for the gird, and it is also easy to implement in practice. Numerical simulations are presented to show the effectiveness of our scheme.

Abstract:The hybrid power system (HPS) is an emerging power generation scheme due to the plentiful availability of renewable energy sources. Renewable energy sources are characterized as highly intermittent in nature due to meteorological conditions, while the domestic load also behaves in a quite uncertain manner. In this scenario, to maintain the balance between generation and load, the development of an intelligent and adaptive control algorithm has preoccupied power engineers and researchers. This paper proposes a Hermite wavelet embedded NeuroFuzzy indirect adaptive MPPT (maximum power point tracking) control of photovoltaic (PV) systems to extract maximum power and a Hermite wavelet incorporated NeuroFuzzy indirect adaptive control of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) to obtain a swift response in a grid-connected hybrid power system. A comprehensive simulation testbed for a grid-connected hybrid power system (wind turbine, PV cells, SOFC, electrolyzer, battery storage system, supercapacitor (SC), micro-turbine (MT) and domestic load) is developed in Matlab/Simulink. The robustness and superiority of the proposed indirect adaptive control paradigm are evaluated through simulation results in a grid-connected hybrid power system testbed by comparison with a conventional PI (proportional and integral) control system. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control paradigm.

Abstract:Electric vehicles (EVs) are now considered to be a cutting-edge form of transportation. However, the electrical grid infrastructure is not sufficiently developed to meet the rising charging demand for electric vehicles. Therefore, it is impossible to rely entirely on grid-generated electricity. This article discusses a control approach for extremely rapid charging of EV batteries driven by a hybrid DC microgrid, consisting of isolated, Photovoltaic (PV), Wind Turbine, Fuel Cell and Energy Storage Systems. An adaptive sliding mode controller is designed to provide the appropriate power for charging and discharging EVs and energy storage units (ESUs) under a variety of power generation and demand scenarios. The proposed adaptive sliding mode controller operates in a decentralized manner to maintain power distribution amongst the microgrid DC-link EVs and the ESUs. In order to validate the effectiveness of the sliding mode controller in battery charging applications, a comprehensive comparison between fuzzy logic and adaptive sliding mode control is conducted. The proposed controller operates exceptionally well in the presence of unpredictable operating point variations such as rapid changes in EV charging load, fluctuations in solar irradiation, unexpected wind conditions, and so on. Finally, the proposed controller is verified by both simulation and experimental studies.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problems of control and energy management in micro-grid with the incorporation of renewable energy generation, hybrid storage technologies, and the integration of the electric vehicles (EVs) with vehicle to grid (V2G) technology. The adaptive model predictive control (AMPC) technique is used to optimize the charge/discharge of the EVs in a receding horizon manner in order to reduce operational cost in a renewable energy-based micro-grid. V2G systems integration can be a crucial element in the assurance of network reliability against variability in loads. In this context, the paper presents an AMPC algorithm for the optimization of a micro-grid coupled with a V2G system consisting of six electric vehicle charging stations. The proposed algorithm effectively manages the use of renewable energy sources, vehicles charge, energy storage units, and the purchase and sale of electric power to the external network. Two scenarios are investigated in this paper to examine the performance of the proposed controller to manage the renewable energy sources in the micro-grid system. The first case uses a load shifting mechanism to solve the charge management problem during a known interval of parking time. The second case introduces the EVs with V2G capabilities when connected with the micro-grid. In this case, the vehicle battery collaborates with the ESS of the micro-grid to maximize costs benefits and mitigate the intermittency of renewable generation. Furthermore, other benefits of V2G concepts, such as voltage and frequency control for the micro-grid stability, are investigated. Therefore, it is evident from the obtained results that the proposed control algorithm was able to effectively manage the renewable energy sources, energy storage units, vehicles charge, and the purchase and sale of electric power with the grid. Abstract:Considering climate change, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) provide a clean alternative for transportation. This study presents an HEV with a fuel cell and ultra-capacitor connected in a parallel-type configuration. Direct model predictive control is used to optimize the power flow between the energy sources and the motor. Notably, the proposed controller uses a global approach, i.e., a single controller for the regulation of both power converters, thereby enhancing overall performance. Furthermore, the controller design leverages a non-averaged state space model that explicitly incorporates the switching nature of the converters. A method for computing reference currents for the fuel cell and ultra-capacitor is also introduced, which utilizes the ultra-capacitor current to manage power demand transients. Simulation results show that the proposed technique produces better results in terms of overshoot, steady-state error, and response time compared to recent studies in the literature.

Abstract:According to the driver requirement, the smooth and precise transition between two power sources is the foremost hassle associated with hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) driven electric vehicles (EVs). Generally, the conventional controllers achieve the switching, which might take some time lag due to the consideration of several parameters like current, torque, energy sources state of charge (SOC), and depth of discharge (DOD). This work proposes a new control strategy to achieve a smooth and precise transition between two power sources. A new controller is modeled with four different math functions; further, those can separately programmed corresponding to the Electric Motor (EM) speed named Math function-based (MFB) controller and treated as the main controller. Hybrid controller (HC) is designed by the newly designed main controller is combined with a conventional controller to achieve the proposed control strategy. The conventional/intelligent controller makes the essential signals to the switches present in the bidirectional and unidirectional converters (BDC & UDC); the main controller constantly normalizes the pulses produced by the first controller according to a motor's speed. The hybridized combination of two separate controllers will achieve a smooth and precise transition between two power sources. The three hybrid controllers MFB with fuzzy logic controller (FLC), proportional integral derivative (PID), and proportional-integral (PI), are designed based on the adopted control technique in the presence of the hysteresis current control loop (HCCL) of the converter circuit. After that, three hybrid controllers separately applied to the main circuit, with changed loads, in the MATLAB/Simulink environment.

Abstract:At present, the availability of nonrenewable sources and their usage for electric vehicle technology is reducing gradually because of their disadvantages are more environmental pollution, direct effect on human health, less reliability, and taking more time to start functioning. So, in this article, the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is considered for the automotive application because of its advantages quick startup, more power density, more safety to handle, high efficiency, and capability of operating at very low operational temperature conditions. However, the drawback of PEMFC is very difficult to identify the accurate MPP position of the fuel system. Here, the improved variable step genetic algorithm is added with the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system for tracking the operational point of the proposed system with high efficiency. These hybrid MPPT controller features are easy to understand, more accurate, have a better dynamic response, and have low design complexity. The evaluated proposed MPPT controller operational efficiency, and settling time of the converter voltage at different fuel stack temperature conditions are 98.7402%, and 0.01607 s respectively. Finally, the boost converter is used in this work to enhance the voltage supply capability of the entire system. The proposed system is investigated by applying the MATLAB tool.

Abstract:Abstract In most situations, fuel cells (FCs) are insufficient to supply power demands in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), thus battery storage systems (BSSs) are used to make the system more efficient like as rapid starting, high power density, and enhanced dynamic set response. How the power sources are regulated and distributed determines the accomplishment efficiency of the driving forces in such a configuration. The most critical aspect should be how to guarantee torque stability of the traction motor which is in our case a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) while attaining quick reaction. This study discusses a hybrid battery‐FCs energy storage and management system for a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), as well as an integrated PMSM's passivity‐based control (PBC) technique to enable power integration and increase the hybrid electric vehicle (HEV)'s operating speed. The present paper is separated into two sections. First, a power management control (PMC) technology is used to manage the FCs‐battery system to guarantee that the HEV gets continuous power from the hybrid energy resources, where a fuzzy logic controller is used as an artificial intelligence system for the FCs converter to maximize the power produced. The second is dedicated to the new proposed PBC control of the EV's PMSM to rectify non‐linearities, external disturbances, and parametric fluctuations. The standard proportional‐integral (PI) control and sliding mode control (SMC) are built for comparison with the proposed PBC dedicated to the PMSM in order to properly assess the efficacy of the proposed control strategy. The simulation results obtained using MATALB/Simulink show that the proposed PBC technique and hybrid battery‐ proton‐exchange membrane PEMFCs energy management enables high power integration and increase the EV's operational speed .

Abstract:The power electronic interface is critical in matching a distributed generation (DG) unit’s characteristics to grid requirements as most DG technologies rely on renewable energy. Increased adoption of electric vehicles (EV) is seen as a positive step toward minimizing air pollution as well as carbon emissions. Rapid proliferation of electric vehicles as well as charging stations has exacerbated voltage quality as well as harmonic distortion difficulties, which harm the efficiency of combined renewable energy. This research proposes novel hybrid design techniques in control systems that enhance the energy efficiency of electronic converters for power electronics. The control system enhancement has been carried out using a hybrid energy storage electric convertor, and energy efficiency is improved using a synergetic battery reference adaptive controller. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)’s internal combustion engine with a small photovoltaic (PV) module is utilised to assess a proposed control method which effectively regulates electric power on-grid by draining electricity from batteries during peak hours as well as then charging them during off-peak times, lowering the load on the converter as well as allowing electric vehicles to charge faster. Experimental results show the constant acceleration case obtained battery current of 92 Amps, ultracapacitor current of 89 Amps, charging voltage of 88 V, DC load current of 85 Amps, battery SOC of 72%, and the time-varying acceleration proposed technique obtained current of 94 Amps, and ultracapacitor current of 90 Amps, charging voltage of 90 V, DC load current of 82 Amps, battery SOC of 79%.

Abstract:Instantaneous application optimality is one of the indispensable indicators to assess energy management performance of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The momentary optimality, nevertheless, cannot be flexibly reachable under various driving environments due to the partial unobservabilities in control algorithms. To cope with it, a novel data-driven controller for PHEVs is proposed in this paper to achieve the instantaneous optimality of energy management. The well-designed machine learning based controller translates the knowledge of global optimization to real-time controlling scheme with the consideration of adaptabilities to disperse driving conditions. To start with, the universal global optimal control policies for varying driving environment are generated offline based on the chaotic quantum particle swarm optimization with sequential quadratic programming (CQPSO-SQP). Then, the offline optimized global control policies are assembled to construct the dataset for training the least square support vector machine (LSSVM) based controller, which features the superior capability in instantly optimal policy making under different driving conditions. At last, the detailed assessment is performed in simulation test and hardware-in-loop (HIL) test to validate the promising role of CQPSO-PSO and LSSVM in designing the novel energy management controller, and the corresponding results highlight the preferable controlling performance of the proposed novel controller in practical applications.

Abstract:In the complex environment of microgrid deployments targeted at geographic regions, the seamless integration of renewable energy sources meets a variety of essential challenges. These include the unpredictable nature of renewable energy, characterized by intermittent energy generation, as well as ongoing fluctuations in load demand, the vulnerabilities present in distribution network failures, and the unpredictability that results from unfavorable weather conditions. These unexpected events work together to disturb the delicate balance between energy supply and demand, raising the alarming threat of system instability and, in the worst cases, the sudden advent of damaging blackouts. To address this issue, a fuzzy logic-based energy management system has been developed to monitor, manage, and optimize energy consumption in microgrids. This study focuses on the control of diesel generators and utility grids in a grid-connected microgrid which manages and evaluates numerous energy consumption and distribution features within a specified system, e.g., building or a microgrid. An energy management system is suggested based on fuzzy logic as a swift fix for complications with effective and competent resource management, and its presentation is compared with both the grid-connected and off-grid modes of the microgrid. In the end, the results exhibit that the proposed controller outclasses the predictable controllers in dropping sudden variations that arise during the addition of sources of renewable energy, supporting the refurbishment of the constant system.

Abstract:The efficiency of hybrid microgrid systems is drastically affected by the number of power electronics converters interfacing with its components. Integrating distributed energy sources with microgrids with the optimal number of converters is crucial to minimizing the switching losses and power conversion stages, thereby improving the efficiency of the systems. This paper considers an efficient and economical configuration for a wind/solar photovoltaic (PV) system integrated with a battery energy storage system (BES). The PV system is connected directly to the DC-link, thus lowering the losses and cost by eliminating the PV boost converter. In the literature, only a few publications have investigated this effective microgrid configuration. In addition, none of the publications have developed a nonlinear control approach for the microgrid configuration. Due to the greater flexibility of fractional calculus in speeding up the system response and improving the robustness, this article proposes a global sliding-mode control method with fractional-order terms (GSMCFO) to enhance the transient, steady-state, and robust operation of the hybrid microgrid. This controller provides the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of both the solar PV and wind power generators, regulates the DC-link voltage, ensures proper power transfer to the grid, and maintains the power balance. In addition, the GSMCFO guarantees the global stability of the hybrid microgrid. Furthermore, considering the simplicity, robustness, few control variables, and fast convergence rate of the differential evolution (DE) optimization method, it is utilized to optimize the performance of the GSMCFO. The proposed hybrid microgrid configuration under the action of the GSMCFO was simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK. Various scenarios were investigated to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme. The simulation results show that the GSMCFO can achieve superior dynamic performances than the proportional–integral (PI) controller with zero overshoot, a shorter settling time, and stronger robustness, thus improving the power balance of the hybrid microgrid.

Abstract:Nuclear and renewables energies are the two variants for low-carbon energy and the evolving grid suggests possible synergies between them. Nuclear energy introduces supple operations based on power demand, while renewables such as PV and wind hybrid systems depend on the presence and strength of sunlight or wind. For grid stability, there is need to improve their performance in order to overcome the impact of this disadvantage. The paper is a step in this direction as it addresses a detailed comprehensive dynamic modeling and an efficient control of grid-connected energy sources such as PV or wind system to increase system reliability and to ensure the power quality and safe operation of critical demands. The behavior of the suggested hybrid system is tested at different climate circumstances such as variation of sun radiation and wind speed. The PV is equipped with a boost converter and a three-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) inverter. The wind energy comprises a doubly fed generator (DFIG) based on a variable-speed wind turbine. The two controllers’ rotor-side and grid-side converters of DFIG have the ability to generate and observe reactive power, to keep constant speed of the rotor and control the DC-link voltage. The proposed scheme was investigated using MATLAB software. The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) was used for two systems, PV and wind, in varying weather conditions. The simulation results prove that the voltage at the point of common coupling was constant. Furthermore, the injected current of the grid side was in sinusoidal form and was synchronized with grid side voltage. In addition, the injected power-to-utility grid was around power delivered by the hybrid PV and wind system.

Abstract:Now, the present electric vehicle industry is focusing on the fuel cell technology because its features are high flexibility, continuous power supply, less atmospheric pollution, fast startup, and rapid response. However, the fuel cell gives nonlinear power versus current characteristics. Due to this nonlinear behavior, the maximum power extraction from the fuel stack is quite difficult. So, in this work, an adaptive genetic algorithm with an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ACS with ANFIS) MPPT controller is introduced for finding the MPP of the fuel stack system thereby extracting the peak power from the fuel stack. The proposed hybrid maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller is compared with the other MPPT controllers which are enhanced incremental conductance-fuzzy logic controller (EIC with FLC), improved hill climb with fuzzy logic controller (IHC with FLC), adaptive beta with FLC, enhanced differential evolutionary with FLC (EDE with FLC), and marine predators optimization with FLC (MPO with FLC). Here, these hybrid controllers’ comprehensive investigations have been carried out in terms of tracking speed of the MPP, oscillations across the MPP, settling time of the converter voltage, maximum power extraction from the fuel stack, and working efficiency of the MPPT controller. The fuel stack generates a very low output voltage which is improved by using the boost DC-DC converter, and the overall fuel stack-fed boost converter system is designed by utilizing the MATLAB/Simulink tool. From the simulation results, the AGA with ANFIS MPPT controller gives high MPP tracking efficiency when compared to the other hybrid controller.

Abstract:The demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, as evidenced by global sales of electric vehicles reaching 2.2 million in 2019 and more than doubling to 6.6 million in 2021. The rapid growth of renewable energies and electric vehicles (EVs) necessitates the use of microgrids, which are a promising solution to the problem of integrating large-scale renewables and EVs into the electric power system. Besides, the essential policy support provided by the government is an increase in the availability of public charging infrastructure for EVs. This research employs a fast-charging configuration of an off-board charger with DC energy transfer. Implementation of DC energy transfer for vehicle-to-grid and grid-to-vehicle technology in a microgrid due to DC charging’s unrestricted charger-rated power and rapid power transfer. However, the integration of EVs in the Microgrid system creates some operational challenges, which in this research are power quality issues such as harmonics in power systems that affect both utilities and consumers. The design models using the PI controller and the fuzzy controller based on MATLAB software are simulated to determine the control system’s effectiveness. These simulations assess the control system’s performance, and both approaches help improve the system’s performance power quality by minimizing the system’s total harmonic distortion (THD). According to the results, the fuzzy logic controller exceeded the traditional PI controller as demonstrated by minimizing the THD and also in terms of improving the waveform quality which achieved high accuracy with good performance. This research also utilized the fuzzy logic controller to control the power transfer between EVs and the microgrid, which differs from other research work, to achieve high system efficiency for the benefit of consumers.

Abstract:Due to the pollution rise by fuel-based vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs) are the best alternative for present conditions. However, the large number of EVs connected to distribution grid may create some problems in terms of over/under-voltage and power quality issues. Moreover, on-board EV charger may support the grid by exchange of active–reactive power with coordinated control. Therefore, this paper presents control architecture for an on-board EV charger which can support the grid actively as well as reactively. The charger can operate under all possible conditions on active–reactive power plane. It has two conversion stages, i.e. first (AC to DC) and second (DC to DC) and can charge the battery pack as per customer desire. An on-board EV charger of 6.6 KVA and its controller is designed in MATLAB/Simulink toolbox and the performance has been tested in eight different modes on active–reactive power plane.
