Abstract:This paper makes an attempt to develop a fractal derivative model of anomalous diffusion. We also derive the fundamental solution of the fractal derivative equation for anomalous diffusion, which characterizes a clear power law. This new model is compared with the corresponding fractional derivative model in terms of computational efficiency, diffusion velocity, and heavy tail property. The merits and distinctions of these two models of anomalous diffusion are then summarized.

Abstract:Nano-suspensions (NS) exhibit unusual thermophysical behaviors once interparticle aggregations and the shear flows are imposed, which occur ubiquitously in applications but remain poorly understood, because existing theories have not paid these attentions but focused mainly on stationary NS. Here we report the critical role of time-dependent fractal aggregation in the unsteady thermal convection of NS systematically. Interestingly, a time ratio λ = t p / t m ( t p is the aggregate characteristic time, t m the mean convection time) is introduced to characterize the slow and fast aggregations, which affect distinctly the thermal convection process over time. The increase of fractal dimension reduces both momentum and thermal boundary layers, meanwhile extends the time duration for the full development of thermal convection. We find a nonlinear growth relation of the momentum layer, but a linear one of the thermal layer, with the increase of primary volume fraction of nanoparticles for different fractal dimensions. We present two global fractal scaling formulas to describe these two distinct relations properly, respectively. Our theories and methods in this study provide new evidence for understanding shear-flow and anomalous heat transfer of NS associated non-equilibrium aggregation processes by fractal laws, moreover, applications in modern micro-flow technology in nanodevices.

Abstract:This paper presents a time-space Hausdorff derivative model for depicting solute transport in aquifers or water flow in heterogeneous porous media. In this model, the time and space Hausdorff derivatives are defined on non-Euclidean fractal metrics with power law scaling transform which, respectively, connect the temporal and spatial complexity during transport. The Hausdorff derivative model can be transformed to an advection-dispersion equation with time- and space-dependent dispersion and convection coefficients. This model is a fractal partial differential equation (PDE) defined on a fractal space and differs from the fractional PDE which is derived for non-local transport of particles on a non-fractal Euclidean space. As an example of applications of this model, an explicit solution with a constant diffusion coefficient and flow velocity subject to an instantaneous source is derived and fitted to the breakthrough curves of tritium as a tracer in porous media. These results are compared with those of a scale-dependent dispersion model and a time-scale dependent dispersion model. Overall, it is found that the fractal PDE based on the Hausdorff derivatives better captures the early arrival and heavy tail in the scaled breakthrough curves for variable transport distances. The estimated parameters in the fractal Hausrdorff model represent clear physical mechanisms such as linear relationships between the orders of Hausdorff derivatives and the transport distance. The mathematical formulation is applicable to both solute transport and water flow in porous media.
Fractal Model for Predicting of Unsaturated Hydraulic Conductivity of Porous Media

Abstract:The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity is a key parameter of porous media applied to groundwater pollution prediction and assessment. The fractal approach is employed in derivation of a power law equation consistent with the empirical Campbell's Law to predict unsaturated conductivity of porous media. The power exponent is a function of the pore-volume fractal dimension and random walk dimension, which respectively characterize the static and dynamic properties of the media, but the contribution of the static property to water movement is dominant. The analytical comparison of the reported experimental data of fractal dimensions with the corresponding power exponents indicates that the derived power law equation is valid for predicting the unsaturated conductivity of porous media.

Abstract:Recently, a new soil-water characteristic curve model for unsaturated soils was proposed based on a fractal model for the soil pore surface. The air-entry value and the surface fractal dimension of soil pores were used to determine the soil-water characteristic curve in this new fractal-based soil-water characteristic curve model. The experimental results found from literature can testify the new model. The new experiment on unsaturated loess is conducted to compare with the new model. The soil-water characteristic curve drawn with experiment data is in satisfactory agreement with the curve predicted by the new model. Copyright ASCE 2006.
Numerical Simulation of Unsaturated Flow in Single Fracture Considering the Water Exchange Between Fracture and Matrix

Abstract:In order to study the hydraulic characteristics of unsaturated flow in single fracture,a method for generating the distribution of fracture aperture using Weierstrass-Mandelbrot function was proposed according to fractal dimension,dislocation value and contact area of fracture surface.Based on the assumption that a parallel-plate approximation can stand in the subregion of the fracture,a numerical model for simulating unsaturated flow in single fracture considering the quasi-static water exchange between fracture and matrix was built up.The simulated relationships between capillary pressure and saturation and between unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and capillary pressure of fracture could be used to describe the hysteresis during drainage and imbibition and figure out the air-entry value and the residual water saturation during drainage.The qualitative comparison of simulated results and experimental results showed that the proposed model is feasible and reliable in modeling the unsaturated flow in single fracture considering the water exchange between fracture and matrix.Finally,comparisons of relation curve between unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and capillary pressure by taking water exchange into account or not was conducted.The result showed that the fracture-matrix exchange is negligible under high capillary pressure(low saturation).

Abstract:Recently, fractional derivatives have been employed to analyze various systems in engineering, physics, finance and hidrology. For instance, they have been used to investigate anomalous diffusion processes which are present in different physical systems like: amorphous semicondutors, polymers, composite heterogeneous films and porous media. They have also been used to calculate the heat load intensity change in blast furnace walls, to solve problems of control theory \ and dynamic problems of linear and nonlinear hereditary mechanics of solids. In this work, we investigate the scaling properties related to the nonlinear fractional diffusion equations and indicate the possibilities to the applications of these equations to simulate the water transport in unsaturated soils. Usually, the water transport in soils with anomalous diffusion, the dependence of concentration on time and distance may be expressed in term of a single variable given by $\lambda_q = x/t^{q}.$ In particular, for $q=1/2$ the systems obey Fick's law and Richards' equation for water transport. We show that a generalization of Richards' equation via fractional approach can incorporate the above property.

Abstract:Mass transfer in non-isothermal fractured porous media have a wide application in many natural phenomena and engineering processes. The current study focuses on developing alternative formulations of steady-state analytical modelling for thermally induced solute diffusion in fractured porous media. The proposed analyt-ical frameworks are validated by two set of experimental data. The varied examples of coupled heat transfer and solute diffusion are evaluated by the proposed solution to discuss the effects of thermal diffusion, flow opera-tional conditions, geometry and thermal properties of fracture and matrix on the overall transport of solute in a fractured porous media. It is found that thermal-diffusion process, or explicitly as a "Soret effect (ST)", is a non -negligible part for investigating solute transport in non-isothermal fractured porous media. For example, increasing ST from 10-3 K-1 to 10-2 K-1 leads to a reduction of solute concentration by a factor of 1.2. We demonstrate that a larger Peclet number ensures the temperature of the solute along the fracture decreasing while its concentration along the fracture increasing. However, an increase of the temperature difference be-tween the entry and the output shows an opposite trend. An increase in fracture aperture or matrix thickness leads to temperature decreasing and concentration increasing along the fracture and matrix as a larger amount of solute are injected from the inlet boundary. The presented analytical solutions may also serve as a benchmark test tool for alternative numerical studies of coupled heat transfer and solute diffusion in fractured porous media.

Abstract:Quantitative description of the advection-diffusion behavior in a single fracture is of fundamental importance for the accurate evaluation of the solute transport behavior and properties, and even for the analysis of the complex hydrodynamic problems. However, the surface roughness and mismatch featured in natural fractures significantly affect the solute advection-diffusion process, with the effect from latter not been fully verified. In this work, the effects of surface roughness and mismatch on advection-diffusion process were reexamined, four control factors (i.e., local roughness factor ( fr ), hydraulic tortuosity ( τ ), surface tortuosity ( τs ), and surface mismatch factor ( fm )) were identified by analytical derivation, and a new modified Taylor-Aris equation was accordingly established. To further reveal the influence mechanism of surface roughness and mismatch on advection-diffusion behavior, a series of Lattice Boltzmann simulations of the advection-diffusion process were conducted. Results indicate that, surface roughness and mismatch affect the advection-induced dispersion behavior both in the form of decreasing the average fluid velocity, with an inverse S-shaped decreasing relationship presented between the latter and the average fluid velocity. Moreover, the influence of surface mismatch on advection-diffusion is independent of surface roughness, and the advection-induced dispersion is inversely proportional to frτ2τs6fm4.5 . Numerical comparison demonstrated the performance of our modified model, and its generalization was approved by theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Many theoretical and experimental results show that solute transport in heterogeneous porous media exhibits multi-scaling behaviors. To describe such non-Fickian diffusion, this work provides a distributed order Hausdorff diffusion model to describe the tracer transport in porous media. This model is proved to be equivalent with the diffusion equation model with a nonlinear time dependent diffusion coefficient. In conjunction with the structural derivative, its mean squared displacement (MSD) of the tracer particles is explicitly derived as a dilogarithm function when the weight function of the order distribution is a linear function of the derivative order p ( α ) = 2 c α . This model can capture both accelerating and decelerating anomalous and ultraslow diffusions by varying the weight parameter c. In this study, the tracer transport in water-filled pore spaces of two-dimensional Euclidean is demonstrated as a decelerating sub-diffusion, and can well be described by the distributed order Hausdorff diffusion model with c = 0.58. While the Hausdorff diffusion model with α = 0.97 can accurately fit the sub-diffusion experimental data of the tracer transport in the pore-solid prefractal porous media.

Abstract:We present a fractional diffusion equation involving external force fields for transport phenomena in random media. It is shown that this fractional diffusion equation obey generalized Einstein relation, and its stationary solution is the Boltzmann distribution. It is proved that the asymptotic behavior of its solution is stretched Gaussian and that its solution can be expressed in the form of a function of a dimensionless similarity variable, not only for constant potentials but also for logarithm, harmonic, analytic and generic potentials. A comparison with the fractional Fokker–Planck equation is given.

Abstract:An improved understanding of complex solute transport processes in a single fracture is the foundation for advancing fracture network research. This study addresses a radial reactive transport problem in a fractured rock matrix system, with an emphasis on the role of non-equilibrium sorption. A new model that integrates a two-site nonequilibrium sorption framework was developed in a single fracture under a radial flow condition. Semianalytical models were derived utilizing Laplace transform techniques. These solutions offer insights into the spatio-temporal concentration, back diffusion and diffusive mass flux issues. When benchmarked against prior solutions, the approach presented here demonstrates superior accuracy and robustness. Several significant results were obtained. First, nonequilibrium sorption leads to a more pronounced peak in the breakthrough curves (BTCs) and diminishes the tailing of BTCs in the system. Second, a higher degradation rate for nonequilibrium sorption reduces the concentration of BTCs in the later stage but has minimal impact in the early stage. Third, after clean water injection, the back diffusion from the rock matrices into the fracture was observed, predominantly near the wellbore, accounting for the tailing behavior. Meanwhile, the diffusive mass flux exhibits a sharp rise and then declines in the early stages. Finally, an increased proportion of equilibrium sorption in the fracture leads to a decrease in the diffusive mass flux, whereas it displays the inverse trend in the rock matrix. In general, these findings underscore the essential role of nonequilibrium sorption considerations for the accurate representation of solute transport processes in fractured rock matrix systems.

Abstract:The gas diffusivity of porous media under dry and wet conditions is valuable in many science and engineering fields, but its accurate measurement remains challenging and time-consuming. This study develops a fractal theoretical model to predict the diffusion behavior of gas in heterogeneous porous media over the entire saturation range. In this model, the pore space is conceptualized as an assembly of heterogeneous capillaries and the gas diffusion within different ranges of pore size is divided into three regimes (i.e., ordinary, Knudsen and transition diffusions). Two heterogeneous factors χ and χ s are introduced to capture the heterogeneity of porosity and saturation, respectively. Together with volume averaging technology, the fractal theory is then used to upscale the diffusion behavior from pore scale to representative element volume scale. The model is then verified by the numerical and experimental data published in the literature and the results are in good agreement. It is revealed that under the dry state, the porosity heterogeneity significantly inhibits the molecular diffusion, leading to a reduction in gas diffusivity. When the media is wetted, the resistance of molecular diffusion also extremely depends on the local heterogeneity of saturation distribution, not just on the bulk saturation, causing a two-stage feature in the variation of gas diffusivity with saturation. Moreover, the proposed model can achieve a much better prediction than the power-law model and Moldrup model. The newly introduced heterogeneity factors can capture the physical behavior of media that is strongly sensitive to local conditions, expecting to overcome the difficulties in applying the volume averaging technology on the continuum scale to heterogeneous materials.

Abstract:The damping effect of an unsaturated-saturated system (USS)on the fluctuations of water flow and the effect of the scaling exponent of infiltration (β)on the damping effect were investigated.The moment equations of the pressure head (ψ)were solved numerically to obtain the variance ofψat 7 observation points.Power spectrum ofψ(Sψψ)were estimated by directly solving the equations of the unsaturated-saturated system.Results show that USS filters out the short-term fluctuations ofψ,so the fluctuations ofψare weakened and the short-term correlation increases.The damping effect decreases with depth and should be soil moisture dependent.The damping effect decreases with the increase of the value ofβ.The fluctuations ofψare first non-stationary and finally stationary under the infiltration of fractional Gaussian noise and the larger the value ofβ,the longer the non-stationary period.The fluctuations ofψare non-stationary all the time under the infiltration of fractional Brownian motion and the larger the value ofβ,the stronger the non-stationarity.The temporal scaling is an important factor inducing the scaling of temporal fluctuations of groundwater levels.

Abstract:A fractal mobile-immobile (MIM in short) solute transport model in porous media is set forth, and an inverse problem of determining the fractional orders by the additional measurements at one interior point is investigated by Laplace transform. The unique existence of the solution to the forward problem is obtained based on the inverse Laplace transform, and the uniqueness of the inverse problem is proved in the real-space of Laplace transform by the maximum principle, and numerical inversions with noisy data are presented to demonstrate a numerical stability of the inverse problem.
Upscaling transport in heterogeneous media featuring local-scale dispersion: flow channeling, macro-retardation and parameter prediction

Abstract:Many theoretical treatments of transport in heterogeneous Darcy flows consider advection only. When local-scale dispersion is neglected, flux-weighting persists over time; mean Lagrangian and Eulerian flow velocity distributions relate simply to each other and to the variance of the underlying hydraulic conductivity field. Local-scale dispersion complicates this relationship, potentially causing initially flux-weighted solute to experience lower-velocity regions as well as Taylor-type macrodispersion due to transverse solute movement between adjacent streamlines. To investigate the interplay of local-scale dispersion with conductivity log-variance, correlation length, and anisotropy, we perform a Monte Carlo study of flow and advective-dispersive transport in spatially-periodic 2D Darcy flows in large-scale, high-resolution multivariate Gaussian random conductivity fields. We observe flow channeling at all heterogeneity levels and quantify its extent. We find evidence for substantial effective retardation in the upscaled system, associated with increased flow channeling, and observe limited Taylor-type macrodispersion, which we physically explain. A quasi-constant Lagrangian velocity is achieved within a short distance of release, allowing usage of a simplified continuous-time random walk (CTRW) model we previously proposed in which the transition time distribution is understood as a temporal mapping of unit time in an equivalent system with no flow heterogeneity. The numerical data set is modeled with such a CTRW; we show how dimensionless parameters defining the CTRW transition time distribution are predicted by dimensionless heterogeneity statistics and provide empirical equations for this purpose.

Scaling relations in the diffusive infiltration in fractals

Abstract:In a recent work on fluid infiltration in a Hele-Shaw cell with the pore-block geometry of Sierpinski carpets (SCs), the area filled by the invading fluid was shown to scale as F~t^n, with n<1/2, thus providing a macroscopic realization of anomalous diffusion [Filipovitch et al, Water Resour. Res. 52 5167 (2016)]. The results agree with simulations of a diffusion equation with constant pressure at one of the borders of those fractals, but the exponent n is very different from the anomalous exponent nu=1/D_W of single particle diffusion in the same fractals (D_W is the random walk dimension). Here we use a scaling approach to show that those exponents are related as n=nu(D_F-D_B), where D_F and D_B are the fractal dimensions of the bulk and of the border from which diffusing particles come, respectively. This relation is supported by accurate numerical estimates in two SCs and in two generalized Menger sponges (MSs), in which we performed simulations of single particle random walks (RWs) with a rigid impermeable border and of a diffusive infiltration model in which that border is permanently filled with diffusing particles. This study includes one MS whose external border is also fractal. The exponent relation is also consistent with the recent simulational and experimental results on fluid infiltration in SCs, and explains the approximate quadratic dependence of n on D_F in these fractals. We also show that the mean-square displacement of single particle RWs has log-periodic oscillations, whose periods are similar for fractals with the same scaling factor in the generator (even with different embedding dimensions), which is consistent with the discrete scale invariance scenario. The roughness of a diffusion front defined in the infiltration problem also shows this type of oscillation, which is enhanced in fractals with narrow channels between large lacunas.
