Abstract:Colonic ischaemia, commonly referred to as ischaemic colitis, is the most common type of intestinal ischaemia. The term "ischaemic colitis" was used by Marston (1966) with three typical patterns of injury described: transient reversible ischaemia, ischaemic ulcers with stricturing, and gangrenous ischaemic colitis. Dominant presenting symptoms were colicky abdominal pain, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and hematochezia. Patients often have minimal signs on clinical examination. Most patients were diagnosed at colonoscopy. Two regions that are believed to be anatomically vulnerable to ischemic disease are "Griffith's point", at the splenic flexure and "Sudeck's critical point", of the Drummond marginal artery. Clinically, ischaemic colitis is classified as non-gangrenous or gangrenous. Non-gangrenous ischaemic colitis involves the mucosa and submucosa and accounts for 80-85 percent of all cases of ischaemic colitis. Non-gangrenous ischaemic colitis is further subclassified into transient, reversible ischaemic colitis with a less severe form of injury and chronic, non-reversible ischaemic colitis, which includes chronic colitis and stricture and has a more severe form of injury. Gangrenous ischaemic colitis accounts for the remaining 15-20 percent of cases and manifests as the most seve-re form of injury. It includes acute fulminant ischaemia with transmural infarction that may progress to necrosis and death. Specific indications for operation include peritonitis, perforation, recurrent fever or sepsis, clinical deterioration in patients refractory to me-ical management. Relative indications include fulminant colitis, massive hemorrhage, chronic protein losing colopathy, and symptomatic ischemic stricture.
Assessment of Maize Yield-Increasing Potential and Optimum N Level under Mulched Drip Irrigation in the Northeast of China

Abstract:A field experiment under film mulched drip irrigation was conducted for two consecutive years (2014.5-2015.10) in the Northeast Plain of China (NEC), in order to quantify the maize yield-increasing potential and optimum nitrogen (N) level. The results showed that mulched drip irrigation significantly promoted the environmental factors, maize growth and production in the NEC (p <= 0.05). Compared with the traditional rain-fed management, the total soil water storage (SWS) at ridge significantly increased by 80 mm and the topsoil accumulative temperature (TC) increased by 353 degrees C under mulched drip irrigation. Compared with non mulched surface drip irrigation, the total SWS and TC also increased by 9 mm and 245-314 degrees C under mulched drip irrigation. The increased TC was the main reason for the promotion of crop development in the early stage, and it prolonged the duration from tasseling stage (VT) to physiological maturity (R6) and increased the yield. Furthermore, the soil total N at the root zone and N uptake also increased under mulched drip irrigation, about 0.28 g/kg and 28.41 kg/hm(2) higher than local management, respectively, which could be regarded as the second reason for the yield-increase. The third main reason for the increase in yield was that more net radiation was intercepted by maize under mulched drip irrigation. Compared with local maize cultivation, the maize yield increased by 10%-29%, and water use efficiency (WUE) increased by 10%-31% and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) increased by 57%-84% at 230 kg/hm(2) N under mulched drip irrigation. There was no significant yield increasing (p > 0.05) with N changed from 230 kg/hm(2) to 330 kg/hm(2). Therefore, N of 230 kg/hm(2) was recommended for mulched drip-irrigated maize and an increase of more than 10% of yield and WUE was validated by mulched drip irrigation experiments in the NEC.

Abstract:Drip irrigation is now commonly used for maize cultivation in China and other regions of the globe. The goal of this study was to compare water and fertilizer use as well as economic benefits for surface and subsurface drip irrigation and for mulched and non-mulched maize production in northeast China. An experiment was conducted during 2015 and 2016 in Chifeng in Inner Mongolia, China that included the following treatments mulched surface drip irrigation (M-DI), non-mulched surface drip irrigation (NM-DI); non-mulched subsurface drip irrigation (NM-SDI), and mulched furrow irrigation (M-FI). The results indicated that film mulching obviously improved the soil temperature and water content during the early growth period, which hastened maize emergence and growth. Compared with the M-FI treatment, the DI techniques significantly decreased the cost of field management and improved water and nitrogen use. The water use efficiency (WUE) and nitrogen partial factor productivity for DI treatments increased by 13.9–39.2% and 16.3–28.1%, respectively, on average for two years, compared to those for the M-FI treatment. The advantages of M-DI were film mulching and in-season fertigation, which improved maize development and achieved the highest yield and net output values, which were 9.2–10.1% and 4.7–19.1% higher than other techniques. The NM-SDI technique is a competitive viable alternative for maize cultivation given the lack of film residue, the ease of field management, which made the annual allocated cost of system decrease by 13.2–24.1% compared with others, and the highest WUE among the treatments. Therefore, the DI techniques showed potential to enhance maize production, but decisions regarding the use of DI should take both economic benefits and environmental impact into consideration.

Abstract:Drought, water, and nitrogen (N) losses have always been great challenges for agricultural production in subtropical regions of China. To study appropriate irrigation regimes and reasonable N applications, a field experiment was conducted for summer maize (Zea mays L.) from 2018 to 2019. Two irrigation treatments, namely, rain-fed irrigation and supplementary irrigation, were designed, and five levels of N fertilizer were applied. The differences in the growth periods of biomass, leaf area index, agronomic traits, carbon accumulation, and carbon metabolism enzyme activity were measured. Findings revealed that the interaction of water and N has a significant impact on maize growth. Compared to other N treatments, N250 produced significantly higher biomass, leaf area index, agronomic traits, carbon accumulation, and carbon metabolism enzyme activity. In 2018, the agronomic traits and leaf area index were significantly higher than in 2019. Meanwhile, additional irrigation could help improve agronomic traits and the leaf area index. Further correlation analysis revealed that carbon accumulation was positively correlated with carbon metabolism enzyme activity, although lower at maturity than in the flowering period. Overall, the findings suggest that supplementary irrigation in conjunction with N250 treatment is a worthwhile measure for sustainable maize production in subtropical regions of China.

Temporal and spatial variation of morpho-physiological characteristics of spring maize under mulched drip irrigation in northeastern China

Abstract:Context: Leaves at different heights in a canopy have differential roles on photosynthetic characteristics and yield but have not been compared systematically under plastic film mulching with drip irrigation. Aims: To determine the temporal and spatial variation of morpho-physiological characteristics in relation to the benefit of mulched drip irrigation in spring maize growth. Methods: Field experiments were conducted in northeastern China during 2017 and 2018 that included mulched drip irrigation (MD), non-mulched drip irrigation (ND), and traditional non-mulched rain-fed (CK) treatments. Key results: MD significantly increased lower leaf area by 13.1–62.3%, upper leaf N content ( N mass ) by 6.3–13.0%, and upper leaf photosynthetic capacity ( A max ) and maximum carboxylation rate ( V cmax ) by 13.4–42.3% and by 4.7–11.6%, respectively. There were close correlations between leaf physiological parameters ( N mass , carbon isotope discrimination ( Δ ), A max , and V cmax ), and also between morphological parameters (leaf area (LA) with leaf mass per area (LMA), and LMA with leaf dry matter content (LDMC). As for time scale, leaf morphological parameters (LA, LMA, and LDMC) in the reproductive stage (R-stage) were higher than those in the vegetative stage (V-stage), while physiological parameters ( N mass , A max , and V cmax ) were higher in the V-stage. This study indicated that MD treatment increased the photosynthetic area of lower leaves and the photosynthetic capacity of upper and middle leaves compared with non-mulched rainfed CK. In addition, an increase of net radiation absorbed by the canopy in MD was likely to correspond to a higher net photosynthetic rate, which was beneficial to yield accumulation in the treatment. Conclusions: This study provided relevant information for the simulation of water and carbon flux under mulched drip irrigation. Implications: The research explained that the morpho-physiological characteristics of leaves at different canopy heights played different role on affecting maize yields under plastic film mulched drip irrigation.

Abstract:Increasing drought stress resistance by exploiting crops' potential is crucial for agricultural sustainable development. Alternate partial root-zone irrigation (PRI) shows some benefits in coping with drought stress, but there is limited information on physiological mechanism of crop in response to nitrogen supply patterns under alternate PRI. Therefore, we designed a rainproof-pond study to determine the effects of nitrogen supply methods on the physiological characteristics of maize (Zea mays L.) under alternate PRI. Two nitrogen fertilizer supply methods, including alternate nitrogen supply (AN) and conventional nitrogen supply (CN), were applied with alternate furrow irrigation (AI) and conventional furrow irrigation (CI), respectively. In addition, AIAN was applied in two ways, namely AIANS (supply of N fertilizer and irrigation water in a synchronized manner) and AIAND (supply of N fertilizer and irrigation water in a separate manner). Compared to CICN, AICN and AIANS enhanced leaf water use efficiency with a significant increase in transpiration rate, while photosynthetic rate was comparable. Also, compared to AIAND, the AIANS positively affected the most measured physiological characteristics. Greater leaf relative water content, chlorophyll and soluble protein content, and the activities of peroxidases and superoxide dismutase enzymes were found in AIANS and AICN. Moreover, the contents of malondialdehyde, proline, and soluble sugar decreased which can be attributed to enhanced root vitality in AICN and AIANS. Alternate furrow irrigation combined with conventional nitrogen supply or alternate synchronized nitrogen supply enhances the drought tolerance of maize by improving photosynthesis, antioxidant defense system, and osmoregulation.

High Efficiency and Low Greenhouse Gas Emissions Intensity of Maize in Drip Irrigation under Mulch System

Abstract:It is the goal of agricultural development to achieve the comprehensive benefits of high yield, high water and nitrogen efficiency but low environmental damage. However, the comprehensive benefits of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, grain yield, water and fertilizer efficiency in fertilized fields with different film mulching irrigation remain unclear. Therefore, we conducted typical maize field observation experiments based on drip irrigation under mulch (DM) and border irrigation under mulch (BM) for three years to quantify GHG emissions and their influencing factors, and analyzed maize yield, irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), partial factor productivity of applied nitrogen (PFPN) and greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI). In our experiment, N2O emissions were lower by 32.46%, CH4 absorption was higher by 23.49%, and CO2 emissions were lower by 4.53% under DM than under BM. The roles of different environmental factors in controlling GHG fluxes were different under two treatments. The relative importance of soil NO3−−N content to N2O and CH4 fluxes under DM was the greatest, and the values were 0.61 and 0.47, respectively. The soil NH4+−N content had the greatest relative importance to CO2 flux under DM (0.43), CH4 flux under BM (0.72), and CO2 flux under BM (0.52). In addition, the maize yield, IWUE and PFPN under DM were 17.85%, 17.90% and 71.84% higher than those under BM, while the global warming potential (GWP) and GHGI under DM were 6.65% and 20.79% lower than those under BM, respectively. Our research provides a more comprehensive understanding of typical farmland management practices in arid areas and has important implications for agricultural development.

Abstract:Deficit irrigation (DI) was acknowledged as an effective technique to improve water use efficiency (WUE) without significant yield reduction. In this study, a 3-year field experiment was conducted in Northeast China during 2017–2019 to investigate the combined effects of 3-week DI from 3-leaf stage and N fertilization on maize seedling growth and determine the resulting impacts on silking growth and yield formation, N use efficiency (NUE) and WUE. Results showed that seedling-stage DI decreased leaf area and photosynthesis, thus significantly limited shoot and root dry biomass for maize seedling, compared to well-watered (WW) plants. In 2017 and 2019, seedling-stage DI positively improved seedling growth with higher root: shoot ratio and enhanced drought tolerance, under higher initial soil water contents (SWC) with sufficient precipitation before DI. The DI-primed plants showed similar or better performances on reproductive growth, grain yield, WUE and NUE compared to WW plants, even experiencing heavy rainfall or drought stresses around the silking stage. However, the contrasting results were observed in 2018 with negative DI effects on seedling and silking growth and final yield, probably due to less rainfall and lower SWC before DI. In all 3 years, N fertilization had significant compensatory effects on limited seedling growth under DI, and its effect was much less in 2018 than other years due to adverse early climate. The principal component and correlation analysis revealed maize silking growth, grain yield, NUE and WUE were strongly related to the seedling growth as affected by water and N managements under various climatic conditions. In conclusion, a short-term and moderate DI regime—adopted at the seedling stage under higher initial SWC and coupled with an appropriate N fertilization—is beneficial to control redundant vegetative growth while optimizing root development, therefore effectively improving drought tolerance for maize plants and achieving higher grain yield, WUE and NUE.

Abstract:The agroecosystem, a critical component of the terrestrial carbon cycle, plays an indispensable role in maintaining the balance of carbon pools and ensuring global food security. Investigating the interplay between crop yield and carbon cycle is essential for the advancement of sustainable agricultural practices. In the quest for water-efficient agricultural solutions, mulched drip irrigation emerges as a promising technique to mitigate water scarcity in agriculture. In the arid regions of northwest China, where water is a precious resource, understanding the impact of irrigation methods on the productivity and carbon dynamics of crops like spring maize is critical. Our study aimed to evaluate the influence of two irrigation methods—mulched drip irrigation (DI) and mulched border irrigation (BI)—on the biomass accumulation and carbon fluxes of spring maize by field observation and DNDC model simulation for comparative analysis. The findings based on field and flux observation data, underscore the transformative potential of shifting from BI to DI. DI was found to significantly enhance the soil's hydrothermal environment, which is crucial for fostering optimal conditions for crop growth. This improvement is instrumental in promoting the allocation of photosynthetic products to the aboveground biomass, ultimately leading to a substantial increase in grain yield. Our results indicated that the DI treatment not only bolstered the gross primary productivity (GPP) but also elevated the ecosystem respiration (RE) compared to the BI treatment. Finally, DI can increase the net ecosystem productivity (NEP) of maize fields by 6.08 %. The Denitrification-Decomposition (DNDC) model, after calibration and validation, proved to be a reliable tool for estimating ecosystem respiration under the two irrigation systems. A thorough analysis of the simulated data revealed that DI's enhancement of the soil's hydrothermal environment also led to an increase in soil heterotrophic respiration. This insight is vital as it sheds light on the complex interactions between irrigation practices and soil microbial processes, which are integral to the carbon cycle. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on sustainable agricultural practices and provide a theoretical foundation for strategies aimed at achieving carbon neutrality. By adopting data-driven approaches and leveraging advanced models, we can pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient agricultural future that harmoniously balances productivity and environmental stewardship.
Responses of nitrogen efficiency and antioxidant system of summer maize to waterlogging stress under different tillage

Abstract:Waterlogging was one of the main abiotic stresses affecting maize yield and growth in the North China Plain, while ridge tillage effectually improved soil environment, enhanced crop stress resistance to waterlogging, and increased grain yield of waterlogged maize. In order to explore the responses of nitrogen (N) efficiency and antioxidant system of summer maize to waterlogging stress under different tillage, a field experiment was conducted to explore N use efficiency, leaf activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) content of waterlogged maize Denghai 605 (DH605) and Zhengdan 958 (ZD958) under different tillage system (ridge planting and flat planting). Our results showed that ridge tillage was beneficial to ameliorate waterlogging damages on antioxidant system by increasing SOD, POD, and CAT activities, and decreasing MDA content. Moreover, ridge tillage significantly increased N efficiency of waterlogged maize. N translocation amount (NTA), N translocation efficiency (NTE), N contribution proportion (NCP), N harvest index (NHI), and N use efficiency (NUE) of waterlogging treatment under ridge planting system (W-V3+R) for DH605 was increased by 108%, 69%, 60%, 8% and 16%, while ZD958 increased by 248%, 132%, 146%, 13% and 16%, respectively, compared to those of waterlogging treatment under flat planting system (W-V3). Ultimately, ridge tillage led to a significant yield improvement by 39% and 50% for DH605 and ZD958, respectively, compared to that of W-V3. In conclusion, ridge tillage was conducive to retard leaf aging, and enhance nitrogen efficiency, thereby resulting in a yield improvement of waterlogged summer maize.

Abstract:To some extent, the photosynthetic traits of developing leaves of maize are regulated systemically by water and nitrogen. However, it remains unclear whether photosynthesis is systematically regulated via water and nitrogen when maize crops are grown under close (high density) planting conditions. To address this, a field experiment that had a split-split plot arrangement of treatments was designed. Two irrigation levels on local traditional irrigation level (high, I2, 4,050 m 3 ha −1 ) and reduced by 20% (low, I1, 3,240 m 3 ha −1 ) formed the main plots; two levels of nitrogen fertilizer at a local traditional nitrogen level (high, N2, 360 kg ha −1 ) and reduced by 25% (low, N1, 270 kg ha −1 ) formed the split plots; three planting densities of low (D1, 7.5 plants m −2 ), medium (D2, 9.75 plants m −2 ), and high (D3, 12 plants m −2 ) formed the split-split plots. The grain yield, gas exchange, and chlorophyll a fluorescence of the closely planted maize crops were assessed. The results showed that water–nitrogen coupling regulated their net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration rate (Tr), quantum yield of non-regulated non-photochemical energy loss [Y(NO)], actual photochemical efficiency of PSII [Y(II)], and quantum yield of regulated non-photochemical energy loss [Y(NPQ)]. When maize plants were grown at low irrigation with traditional nitrogen and at a medium density (i.e., I1N2D2), they had Pn, Gs, and Tr higher than those of grown under traditional treatment conditions (i.e., I2N2D1). Moreover, the increased photosynthesis in the leaves of maize in the I1N2D2 treatment was mainly caused by decreased Y(NO), and increased Y(II) and Y(NPQ). The coupling of 20%-reduced irrigation with the traditional nitrogen application boosted the grain yield of medium density-planted maize, whose Pn, Gs, Tr, Y(II), and Y(NPQ) were enhanced, and its Y(NO) was reduced. Redundancy analysis revealed that both Y(II) and SPAD were the most important physiological factors affecting maize yield performance, followed by Y(NPQ) and NPQ. Using the 20% reduction in irrigation and traditional nitrogen application at a medium density of planting (I1N2D2) could thus be considered as feasible management practices, which could provide technical guidance for further exploring high yields of closely planted maize plants in arid irrigation regions.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) application under irrigation regimes for improving maize biomass saccharification and reducing soil nitrate (NO 3 − ) losses is an essential agronomic management strategy for sustainable farming. This study aimed to assess the impact of irrigation regimes and N fertilizer dosages on nitrate leaching, plant enzymatic activities, photosynthetic gas exchange, and biomass saccharification of maize straw. Two irrigation water levels such as low irrigation (LW; 60%) and high irrigation (HW; 80%) of field capacity and five N dosages, including 0, 200, 250, 300, and 350 kg N ha −1 , were used as experimental treatments and were replicated four times. A plastic plate was kept below the pot for leachate collection, and it was sampled through a syringe at 10-day intervals. The soil total N, soil mineral N, plant N, soil organic carbon, and plant enzyme activities were also determined. The leaching of NO 3 − was more (5.36 mg L −1 ) for 350 kg N ha −1 under HW compared to other N dosages. The LW decreased NO 3 − leaching by 10.15%, acid soluble by1.88%, insoluble by 9.69%, and total lignin by 8.72% compared to HW irrigation. In addition, LW irrigation increased grain yield (25.57%), shoot (17.45%), and root dry matter (28.67%) over the HW. The LW irrigation resulted in higher hexoses (21.72% dry matter) and lower acid soluble (2.23% dry matter), acid insoluble (14.32% dry matter), and total lignin content (16.56% dry matter) in N300 treatment. Thus, lowering the N fertilization and irrigation water can be optimally used to prevent NO 3 − leaching and improve the maize biomass. The application of LW irrigation coupled with low N dose (300 kg ha −1 ) was considered the most optimal rate of irrigation and N fertilizer for increasing maize biomass, enzyme activities, and biomass saccharification, along with potential minimization of NO 3 − leaching.

Abstract:A mulched drip fertigation system is an effective way to improve maize yield, but at present, the efficiency of nutrient delivery and water use are generally low. Therefore, this study conducted optimization field experiments to identify the main factors limiting the delivery of water and fertilizer, including regulations on nitrogen (N) fertilizer, irrigation conditions, planting density and maize varieties, in the semi-arid area of Northeast China. As part of an effort to close the yield gap for maize, an optimized system (DS) for optimal crop, nutrient and water management was designed to improve the agronomic and economic performance of maize farming in the area. The application rate of N fertilizer was 240 kg ha−1; the base fertilizer was applied four times (once at the jointing stage, twice at the belling stage and once at the silking stage); the rates of application of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilizer were 90 kg P2O5 ha−1 and 90 kg K2O ha−1, respectively; the irrigation amount was 270 mm ha−1; the maize variety Fumin 985 was planted at a density of 80,000 plants ha−1 in DS; the grain yield of DS reached 13.8 Mg ha−1, 93% of the yield potential. DS yielded an economic benefit of 18,449 yuan ha−1, which was significantly higher than the economic benefit of 13,818 yuan ha−1 achieved under farmers’ practices (FP). Furthermore, the utilization rates of N, P, K, and water were significantly improved under DS. In conclusion, DS increased production potential, with high efficiency in nutrient delivery and water use and low losses of nutrients and water. The crop, fertilizer, and water management of DS provided a technological system to simultaneously improve crop production and resource-use efficiency in the semi-arid area of Northeast China.

Abstract:Inappropriate water and fertilizer management can lead to unstable crop yield, and excessive irrigation and fertilization can potentially cause soil degradation and groundwater pollution. A two-year field experiment was conducted on drip-fertigated spring maize (Zea mays L.) in Ningxia of northwest China to explore the effects of four irrigation amounts (I75: 0.75ETc, I90: 0.90ETc, I105: 1.05ETc and I120: 1.20ETc, where ETc is the crop evapotranspiration) and four N-P2O5-K2O fertilization rates (F60-30-30, F120-60-60, F180-90-90 and F240-120-120 in 2016; F150-70-70, F225-110-110, F300-150-150 and F375-180-180 in 2017) on maize growth, grain yield, grain nitrogen accumulation, economic benefit and soil nitrate residue (NO3-N). Considering the goal of conserving both water and fertilizer while maintaining relatively high yields and minimizing soil NO3-N, a management strategy to optimize irrigation and fertilization regimes was developed based on the response surface methodology. The results showed that irrigation amount and fertilization rate significantly affected leaf area index, aboveground biomass, grain yield and harvest index. The irrigation-fertilization interaction significantly affected plant and grain nitrogen accumulation. In 2016 with lower fertilization range, grain yield and grain nitrogen accumulation were highest under I120F240-120-120, reaching 14,440 kg ha-1 and 184.50 kg ha-1, respectively. In 2017 with higher fertilization range, both grain yield and grain nitrogen accumulation initially increased and then decreased with increasing irrigation and fertilization regimes. Grain yield and grain nitrogen accumulation were highest under I90F300-150-150, reaching 16,884 kg ha-1 and 195.09 kg ha-1, respectively. Although plant nitrogen uptake was dramatically higher under I90F375-180-180 than those in the other treatments, grain yield was markedly lower under I90F300-150-150 and nitrogen harvest index was also lower. Soil NO3−-N increased with increasing fertilization rate, but it decreased with increasing irrigation amount. When irrigation amount and fertilization rate increased at the same time, the soil NO3−-N accumulation area moved deeper in the soil profile. Soil NO3--N content and distribution in the 60−100 cm soil layer showed an increasing trend, but this trend was less obvious than that in the 0−60 cm soil layer. When the irrigation amount was 447−452 mm and the N-P2O5-K2O fertilization rate ranged from 290−145-145 to-303−152-152 kg ha-1, grain yield, grain nitrogen accumulation and economic benefit (≥13,688 CNY ha-1) can reach 95 % confidence interval of their maximum values simultaneously. This study can provide a theoretical basis for high-efficient water and fertilizer utilization in sustainable spring maize (Zea mays L.) production in northwest China.

Abstract:Irrigation management is one of most critical factors influencing soil N 2 O and CO 2 emissions in dryland agriculture. To explore the effects of irrigation systems and levels on the mitigation of N 2 O and CO 2 emissions from maize fields and to determine the balance among greenhouse gases (GHG) emission, water-saving and grain yield, a two–year field experiment was conducted in the North China Plain (NCP) during the growing seasons of 2018 and 2019. Two irrigation systems (i.e., flood irrigation, FI, and drip irrigation, DI) were adopted with four irrigation levels in each system, including 65 mm/event (sufficient irrigation, CK), 50 mm/event (decreased by 23 %), 35 mm/event (by 46 %) and 20 mm/event (by 69 %), respectively. The results showed that both irrigation systems and levels had significant effects on soil N 2 O and CO 2 emissions ( P < 0.05). Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and CO 2 emissions peaked following irrigation or irrigation + fertilization events during sowing to early filling stage (R1), with the peak values increasing with irrigation levels. Meanwhile, peak values from FI were higher than those from DI at 50 mm and 65 mm irrigation levels. The average cumulative N 2 O and CO 2 emissions of DI treatments were 14.9 % and 6.23 % lower than those of FI treatments ( P < 0.05), respectively. Soil moisture was identified as one of the most crucial factors influencing N 2 O and CO 2 fluxes. Deficit irrigation efficiently deceased cumulative N 2 O and CO 2 emissions, but moderate to severe deficit irrigation brought significant reduction in grain yield. Drip irrigation with a slight deficit irrigation level (decreased by 23 %) obtained the best economic and environmental benefits, which achieved the dual goal of lower GHG emissions but higher WUE without sacrificing grain yield.

Abstract:Nitrogen is a key factor in maize (Zea mays L.) grain and biomass production. Inappropriate application with sub-optimum plant density and irrigation can lead to low productivity and inefficient use. A two-year field experiment was conducted to determine which nitrogen rate, plant density, and irrigation level optimize grain, biomass yield, and water use efficiency. Three nitrogen rates of urea (46–0–0 of N–P2O5–K2O) (N0 = 0 kg N ha−1, N1 = 270 kg N ha−1, and N2 = 360 kg N ha−1), with three maize densities (D1 = 75,000 plants ha−1, D2 = 97,500 plants ha−1, and D3 = 120,000 plants ha−1), and two irrigation levels (W1 = 5250 m3/hm2 and W2 = 4740 m3/hm2) were investigated. The results show that both grain and biomass yields were affected by the main factors. The interaction between nitrogen rate and irrigation level significantly (p < 0.001) affected grain yield but not biomass. It was observed that the grain yield increased correspondingly with nitrogen rate and plant density, while it decreased as the irrigation level increased. Water use efficiency was significantly (p < 0.001) affected by the main factors and their interactions. Nevertheless, water use efficiency was highest at (5250 m3/hm2) × 270 kg N ha−1; × 360 kg N ha−1 × 120,000 plants ha−1 and increased from 62% to 68%. In addition, the highest biomass yield was recorded at 5250 m3/hm2 × 270 kg N ha−1; × 360 kg N ha−1 × 120,000 plants ha−1 while the interaction of either irrigation level with 0 and 270 kg ha−1 or 97,500 and 120,000 plants ha−1 yielded the lowest water use efficiency. Thus, optimized nitrogen rates, plant density, and alternate irrigation levels can support optimum grain and biomass yields. It can also improve nitrogen and water use efficiency in maize production.

Abstract:Introduction: To investigate the effects of different drip irrigation periods on soil microbial communities and functions. Methods: Increasing drip irrigation amount at the seedling (S), jointing (J), bell (B), tasseling (T) and grain filling (G) stages of maize were studied using no increase in irrigation amount as control (CK). Principal component analysis was conducted to comprehensively evaluate soil microbial quality following the different drip irrigation treatments. In addition, the characteristics of the community structure and the potential functional composition of soil bacteria and fungi were comparatively analyzed by combining amplicon sequencing and functional prediction methods. Results: The results indicated that MBNT15 was the most important genus for the classification of soil bacterial samples, Saitozyma was the most important genus for the classification of soil fungal samples, and fungi were more important than bacteria for the classification of soil microbial samples. Compared with fungal communities, bacterial communities exhibited high levels of functional diversity. The proportion of metabolism was the highest in the prediction of bacterial primary functions, and carbohydrate metabolism and amino acid metabolism were important functions in the prediction of bacterial secondary functions. BugBase phenotype prediction results showed that soil bacteria under B treatment had a higher number of aerobic bacteria and greater resistance to disease and stress. The J treatment had the highest number of bacteria with biofilm forms, and the J, S, and G treatments contained more potentially pathogenic bacteria but fewer stress-tolerant bacteria compared with the CK treatment. The number of Saprotroph was the largest and the number of Symbiotroph was the least. The relative abundances of Saprotroph, Pathotroph and Symbiotroph were 68.60%~74.33%, 15.76%~20.60% and 9.16%~11.13%, respectively. Discussion: The findings provide a reference for conserving water resources, improving maize yield, and predicting soil microbial metabolic potential and function by reflecting the richness of the soil microbial community structure in maize fields.

Abstract:Increasing the capacity of plants to assimilate carbon (source), or to tap into the internal carbon reservoir (sink), has the potential of realizing high and stable yield under a more variable climate. A three-year field experiment was conducted to explore the source-sink relationships of two maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars in response to various water and fertilizer inputs, and evaluate the yield sustainability in northwest China. There were two fertilization rates (unfertilized, F0; fertilized, F1), two irrigation strategies (rainfed, RF; supplemental drip irrigation, DI) and two maize cultivars (ZD958 and QL14). The results showed that the newly released maize cultivar (QL14) had higher leaf chlorophyll content at the silking and grain-filling stages than the old one (ZD958); meanwhile, QL14 had higher root dry matter at maturity than ZD958 under DIF1. The aboveground and root dry matter increased with the amount of water and fertilizer, while the root-shoot ratio decreased. Cultivar significantly affected the vegetative organ dry matter partitioning, especially under severe drought at the silking stage. QL14 had stronger root system and larger leaf dry matter than ZD958, and was more drought-resistant under serious water-stressed conditions. Dry matter translocation (DMT) was crucial for grain yield formation under limited nutrients conditions, and ~55% of total dry matter at maturity was accumulated at the grain-filling stage under adequate water and fertilizer conditions. DIF1 had higher sustainable yield index (SYI) than RFF1. There was no significant difference in grain yield between the two maize cultivars under DIF1, but the average SYI of QL14 (0.94) was greater than that of ZD958 (0.89). The present study indicates that the newly released maize cultivar (QL14) with stronger root system and stay-green characteristics is beneficial for increasing drought resistance and keeping yield stable in the semi-humid and drought-prone region of northwest China.

Abstract:Plant density and nitrogen (N) rate are two important factors affecting maize yield. However, the interacting effects of plant density and nitrogen rate on maize production and water productivity are still poorly understood, especially under drip irrigation conditions. A two-year field experiment was carried out to determine the interactive effects of plant density and N rate on grain yield, economic benefit, water productivity (WP) and nitrogen use efficiency of drip-fertigated spring maize (Zea mays L.) in northwest China. Based on the local plant density of 80,000 plants ha-1 and N rate of 240 kg ha-1, two plant densities (D1: 80,000 plants ha-1, D2: 100,000 plants ha-1) and four N rates (N0: 0, N120: 120 kg ha-1, N180:180 kg ha-1, N240: 240 kg ha-1) were set in 2018, while a higher plant density (D3: 120,000 plants ha-1) was further considered in 2020. The results showed that grain yield, economic benefit, WP and nitrogen use efficiency were significantly affected by plant density, N rate and their interaction (except for economic benefit). Average grain yield increased and then decreased with increasing N rate under D1 and D2 with the maximum values under N180 in both 2018 (12,193 kg ha-1 and 16,650 kg ha-1) and 2020 (11,136 kg ha-1 and 15,093 kg ha-1), while it continued to increase as N rate increased under D3 in 2020. On average, D2 produced significantly higher grain yield than D1 in both 2018 (13,464 kg ha-1 and 10,477 kg ha-1) and 2020 (13,268 kg ha-1 and 9,859 kg ha-1), while grain yield under D2 (13,366 kg ha-1) was significantly higher than that under D3 (12,301 kg ha-1) and D1 (10,168 kg ha-1) in 2020. Similar trends to grain yield were also obtained for economic benefit. Overall, grain yield, economic benefit, WP and N partial factor productivity under D2N180 was significantly increased by 41.6%, 52.6%, 33.8% and 90.4% compared with those under the conventional management practice (D1N240), respectively. Based on the multiple regression and spatial analysis, the optimal ranges of plant density of 95,000∼110,000 plants ha-1 and N rate of 185∼205 kg ha- 1 were able to simultaneously obtain ≥95% of the maximum grain yield, economic benefit and water productivity.
