Abstract:Purpose: Telerehabilitation, as an effective means of treatment, is not inferior to traditional rehabilitation, and solves the problem of many patients who do not have access to hospital-based training due to costs and distance. So far, the knowledge structure of the global use of telerehabilitation has not been formed. This study aimed to demonstrate the state of emerging trends and frontiers concerning the studies of telerehabilitation through bibliometric software. Methods: Literature about telerehabilitation from 2000 to 2021 was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. We used CiteSpace 5.8.R3 to analyze the publication years, journals/cited journals, countries, institutions, authors/cited authors, references, and keywords. Based on the analysis results, we plotted the co-citation map to more intuitively observe the research hotspots and knowledge structure. Results: A total of 1,986 records were obtained. The number of annual publications gradually increased over the investigated period. The largest increase occurred between 2019 and 2020. J TELEMED TELECARE was the most prolific and the most cited journal. The United States was the most influential country, with the highest number of publications and centrality. The University of Queensland was the most productive institution. The author Tousignant M ranked the highest in the number of publications and Russell TG ranked the first in the cited authors. Respectively, the articles published by Cottrell MA and Russell TG ranked the first in the frequency and centrality of cited references. The four hot topics in telerehabilitation were "care","stroke", "telemedicine" and "exercise". The keyword "stroke" showed the strongest citation burst. The two frontier keywords were "physical therapy" and "participation" . The keywords were clustered to form 21 labels. Conclusion: This study uses visualization software CiteSpace to provide the current status and trends in clinical research of telerehabilitation over the past 20 years, which may help researchers identify new perspectives concerning potential collaborators and cooperative institutions, hot topics, and research frontiers in the research field. Bibliometric analysis of telerehabilitation supplements and improves the knowledge field of telemedicine from the concept of rehabilitation medicine and provides new insights into therapists during the COVID-19 pandemic.

[The influence of temperature on the orientation of pigments in PS II].

Abstract:The effect of temperature on the orientation of pigment in PSII was studied by the fluorescence excitation spectra and polarization fluorescence spectra of spinach thylakoid solution. The experimental results showed that in the temperature range of 15-45 degrees C the absorption band of chl a at 436 nm at room temperature red-shifted with increasing temperature. The excitation spectra intensity reached the maximum at the temperature of 35 degrees C, but greatly reduced with temperature at 65 and 78 degrees C. In the polarization fluorescence spectra the fluorescence peak of PSII didn't change with temperature from 15 to 45 degrees C. It was also found that the calculated fluorescence polarization degree increased with the temperature in the entire temperature range. The analysis indicated that temperature would affect the orientation of the pigments in PSII and the coupling strength between pigments so to change photosynthetic efficiency. The results will give a certain reference for the study of the energy absorption and transmission, regulation mechanism and also on solar cell materials.
Research trends and hotspots of post-stroke upper limb dysfunction: a bibliometric and visualization analysis

Abstract:Background: The global prevalence of stroke has been increasing. Motor dysfunction is observed in approximately 55 to 75% of stroke patients, with upper limb impairment affecting around 85% of them. Following upper limb dysfunction, the body's recovery time is not only slower compared to the lower limbs, but the restoration of its fine motor skills is significantly more challenging, greatly impacting the daily lives of patients. Consequently, there is an increasing urgency for study on the upper limb function in stroke. Methods: A search was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection: Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-Expanded) database for material published from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2023. We included all relevant literature reports and conducted an analysis of annual publications, countries/regions, institutions, journals, co-cited references, and keywords using the software packages CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix R. Next, we succinctly outlined the research trends and hotspots in post-stroke upper limb dysfunction. Results: This analysis comprised 1,938 articles from 1,897 institutions, 354 journals, and 53 countries or regions. A yearly rise in the production of publications was noted. The United States is the foremost nation on the issue. Northwestern University has the most amounts of papers compared to all other institutions. The journal Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair is a highly significant publication in this field, with Catherine E. Lang serving as the principal author. The majority of the most-cited references focus on subjects such as the reliability and validity of assessment instruments, RCT of therapies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. The intervention measures primarily comprise three types of high-frequency phrases that are related, as determined by keyword analysis: intelligent rehabilitation, physical factor therapy, and occupational therapy. Current areas of focus in research include randomized clinical trials, neurorehabilitation, and robot-assisted therapy. Conclusion: Current research has shown a growing interest in studying upper limb function assessment, occupational therapy, physical therapy, robot-assisted therapy, virtual reality, brain-computer interface, telerehabilitation, cortical reorganisation, and neural plasticity. These topics have become popular and are expected to be the focus of future research.

Abstract:Background As an emerging technology, virtual reality (VR) has been broadly applied in the medical field, especially in neurorehabilitation. The growing application of VR therapy promotes an increasing amount of clinical studies. In this paper, we present a bibliometric analysis of the existing studies to reveal the current research hotspots and guide future research directions. Methods Articles and reviews on the related topic were retrieved from the Science Citation Index Expanded of Web of Science Core Collection database. VOSviewer and Citespace software were applied to systematically analyze information about publications, countries, institutions, authors, journals, citations, and keywords from the included studies. Results A total of 1,556 papers published between 1995 and 2021 were identified. The annual number of papers increased gradually over the past three decades, with a peak publication year in 2021 ( n = 276). Countries and institutions from North America and Western European were playing leading roles in publications and total citations. Current hotspots were focused on the effectiveness of VR therapy in cognitive and upper limb motor rehabilitation. The clusters of keywords contained the four targeted neurological diseases of VR, while the burst keywords represented that the latest studies were directed toward more defined types of VR therapy and greater study design. Conclusions Our study offers information regarding to the current hotspots and emerging trends in the VR for rehabilitation field. It could guide future research and application of VR therapy in neurorehabilitation.

Abstract:Objective: This research was aimed at determining research hotspots and major topics in the field of international home-based cardiac rehabilitation (HBCR) over the past 20 years, and exploring future trends in HBCR. Methods: A total of 757 research articles from 2002 to 2022, with themes of home-based cardiac rehabilitation, were included in the core collection database of Web of Science. CiteSpace software was used for literature metrology and visualization analysis. Results: (1) The total number of research articles on HBCR is increasing. (2) Research hotspots in HBCR include the effectiveness of rehabilitation after coronary heart disease or heart failure; quality of life; mental health; and home rehabilitation after COVID-19. (3) Research trends in HBCR include wearable intelligent technology; telerehabilitation; lifestyle interventions; and home-based rehabilitation prescriptions for exercise, nutrition, psychology and continuous management. Conclusion: The effects of HBCR have been continuously verified. Research has focused primarily on secondary prevention and rehabilitation after coronary heart disease and heart failure. More attention must be paid to improving patients’ quality of life by HBCR. Telerehabilitation based on wearable intelligent technology, home-based lifestyle interventions and continuous management are future trends of HBCR development.

Abstract:Stroke remains one of the most common causes of adult disability in the world. In recent years, diverse telerehabilitation programs have been conceived and studied to improve the abilities of the activities of daily living and increased independence of stroke patients living at home. The systematic review was conducted to determine whether telerehabilitation leads to an improvement in abilities of activities of daily living for stroke patients.Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effects of telerehabilitation in stroke survivors living at home were identified by searching 7 electronic databases from inception to March 2015, and by hand searching for conference literatures between 2000 and 2015. Assessments of risk bias and data extraction were conducted independently by 2 reviews.The search strategy identified 2587 records, of which 11 studies were thought to be eligible. Pooled results from 7 studies showed no significant differences in abilities of activities of daily living (Barthel Index scale: standardized mean difference [SMD] -.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] -.24 to .13; Berg Balance Scale: SMD -.05, 95% CI -.7 to .37) and motor function (Fugl-Meyer Extremity: SMD .05, 95% CI -.09 to 1.09) between groups.This review provides limited, moderate evidence that telerehabilitation of all approaches has equal effects with conventional rehabilitation in improving abilities of activities of daily living and motor function for stroke survivors. Further research of RCTs in this area (rehabilitation field of telemedicine) is ungently required to extend the evidence base.
Global Trends and Hotspots in Research on Rehabilitation Robots: A Bibliometric Analysis From 2010 to 2020

Abstract:Background: In recent years, with the development of medical science and artificial intelligence, research on rehabilitation robots has gained more and more attention, for nearly 10 years in the Web of Science database by journal of rehabilitation robot-related research literature analysis, to parse and track rehabilitation robot research hotspot and front, and provide some guidance for future research. Methods: This study employed computer retrieval of rehabilitation robot-related research published in the core data collection of the Web of Science database from 2010 to 2020, using CiteSpace 5.7 visualization software. The hotspots and frontiers of rehabilitation robot research are analyzed from the aspects of high-influence countries or regions, institutions, authors, high-frequency keywords, and emergent words. Results: A total of 3,194 articles were included. In recent years, the research on rehabilitation robots has been continuously hot, and the annual publication of relevant literature has shown a trend of steady growth. The United States ranked first with 819 papers, and China ranked second with 603 papers. Northwestern University ranked first with 161 publications. R. Riener, a professor at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, ranked as the first author with 48 articles. The Journal of Neural Engineering and Rehabilitation has the most published research, with 211 publications. In the past 10 years, research has focused on intelligent control, task analysis, and the learning, performance, and reliability of rehabilitation robots to realize the natural and precise interaction between humans and machines. Research on neural rehabilitation robots, brain–computer interface, virtual reality, flexible wearables, task analysis, and exoskeletons has attracted more and more attention. Conclusions: At present, the brain–computer interface, virtual reality, flexible wearables, task analysis, and exoskeleton rehabilitation robots are the research trends and hotspots. Future research should focus on the application of machine learning (ML), dimensionality reduction, and feature engineering technologies in the research and development of rehabilitation robots to improve the speed and accuracy of algorithms. To achieve wide application and commercialization, future rehabilitation robots should also develop toward mass production and low cost. We should pay attention to the functional needs of patients, strengthen multidisciplinary communication and cooperation, and promote rehabilitation robots to better serve the rehabilitation medical field.

Abstract:Background: In recent years, with the development of computer science and medical science, virtual reality (VR) technology has become a promising tool for improving cognitive function. Research on VR-based cognitive training has garnered increasing attention. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the application status, research hot spots, and emerging trends of VR in cognitive rehabilitation over the past 20 years. Methods: Articles on VR-based cognitive rehabilitation from 2001 to 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace software was used for the visual analysis of authors and countries or regions, and Scimago Graphica software was used for the geographic visualization of published countries or regions. Keywords were clustered using the gCLUTO software. Results: A total of 1259 papers were included. In recent years, research on the application of VR in cognitive rehabilitation has been widely conducted, and the annual publication of relevant literature has shown a positive trend. The main research areas include neuroscience and neurology, psychology, computer science, and rehabilitation. The United States ranked first with 328 papers, and Italy ranked second with 140 papers. Giuseppe Riva, an Italian academic, was the most prolific author with 29 publications. The most frequently cited reference was "Using Reality to Characterize Episodic Memory Profiles in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease: Influence of Active and Passive Encoding." The most common keywords used by researchers include "virtual reality," "cognition," "rehabilitation," "performance," and "older adult." The largest source of research funding is from the public sector in the United States. Conclusions: The bibliometric analysis provided an overview of the application of VR in cognitive rehabilitation. VR-based cognitive rehabilitation can be integrated into multiple disciplines. We conclude that, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the development of VR-based telerehabilitation is crucial, and there are still many problems that need to be addressed, such as the lack of consensus on treatment methods and the existence of safety hazards.

Abstract:Background: Stroke is a cerebrovascular disease with high prevalence and mortality, and upper limb hemiparesis is a major factor limiting functional recovery in stroke patients. Improvement of motor function in stroke patients through various forms of constraint-induced movement therapy (CITM) has been recognized as safe and effective in recent years. This research field lacks a comprehensive systematic and clear vein combing analysis, analyzing the literature research of CIMT in the field of rehabilitation in the past three decades, summarizing the research hotspots and cutting-edge trends in this field, in an effort to offer ideas and references for subsequent researchers. Methods: Relevant literature on CIMT in rehabilitation was collected from 1996 to 2024 within the Web of Science database's core dataset by using CiteSpace6.1, VOSviewer1.6.18, R-bibliometrix4.6.1, Pajek5.16, Scimago Graphica 1.0.26 software for visualization and analysis. Results: There were 970 papers in all United States was ranked first with 401 papers. Alabama Univ was ranked first for institutions with 53 papers. Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair was ranked first for journals with 78 papers, and Taub E was ranked first for author publications with 64 papers. Research keywords were CIMT, stroke rehabilitation, upper extremity function, lower extremity gait balance, randomized controlled trials, physical therapy techniques (transcranial magnetic stimulation and sensory amplitude electrical stimulation), primary motor cortex plasticity, lateral dominance (spatial behaviors), cerebral vascular accidents, activities of daily living, hand function, disability, functional restoration, bimanual training, aphasia, acquired invalidity, type A Botulinum toxin and joystick riding toys. Conclusion: The current state of research shows that CIMT still has a vast potential for development in the field of rehabilitation research. The research hotspots are the clinical efficacy of CIMT combined with other therapies (botulinum toxin type A, transcranial direct current stimulation, virtual reality, mirror therapy, robotic-assisted) to enhance the functionality of upper limb hemiparesis in stroke patients, the mechanism of CIMT to improve the plasticity of the motor cortex through electrophysiological and imaging methods, and improvement of lower limb gait balance function in stroke patients and aphasia applications, the optimal intervention time and dose, and exploration of CIMT in new settings such as robot-assisted, telemedicine, and home rehabilitation.

Abstract:Background: A comprehensive analysis was conducted on the relevant literature pertaining to the application of traditional Chinese exercises in stroke rehabilitation over the past 20 years. Additionally, a scientific knowledge map was created to elucidate the current research status, investigate its development process and research trends, and offer novel research perspectives for future studies. Methods: The data is sourced from the WOS Core Collection, and CiteSpace software is used to analyze the relevant literature on traditional Chinese exercises in stroke rehabilitation. The analysis began with the selection of publications, countries, institutions, highly cited authors, and co-cited references to summarize the current research status of traditional exercises in stroke rehabilitation. Second, keywords were employed to identify research hotspots, and keyword clustering time zone diagrams were chosen to track the research development process. Finally, burst keywords were employed to explore the research frontiers and trends in this field. Results: In total, 937 documents were retrieved, and the annual publication volume consistently and sustainably increased. China and the USA emerged as significant contributors. The Chinese University of Hong Kong had the highest publication count, with ADA L from the University of Sydney being a highly cited author. Initially, keywords focused on cardiac output, blood flow, pressure, and performance. Over time, the focus shifted to heart failure, muscle strength, mortality, and exercise capacity. Current trends encompass outcome, impact, virtual reality, and anxiety. Conclusion: Integrating key elements of traditional exercise approaches with the specific attributes of movement disorders during the stroke recovery phase is essential. Therefore, enhancing the stroke rehabilitation training program and exploring novel avenues for traditional exercise-based interventions are critical.

Telerehabilitation for Stroke Survivors: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background: Telerehabilitation is an emerging technology through which medical rehabilitation care can be provided from a distance. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to investigate the efficacy of telerehabilitation in poststroke patients. Methods: Eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were identified by searching MEDLINE, Cochrane Central, and Web of Science databases. Continuous data were extracted for relevant outcomes and analyzed using the RevMan software as the standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% CI in a fixed-effect meta-analysis model. Results: We included 15 studies (1339 patients) in our systematic review, while only 12 were included in the pooled analysis. The combined effect estimate showed no significant differences between the telerehabilitation and control groups in terms of the Barthel Index (SMD -0.05, 95% CI -0.18 to 0.08), Berg Balance Scale (SMD -0.04, 95% CI -0.34 to 0.26), Fugl-Meyer Upper Extremity (SMD 0.50, 95% CI -0.09 to 1.09), and Stroke Impact Scale (mobility subscale; SMD 0.18, 95% CI -0.13 to 0.48]) scores. Moreover, the majority of included studies showed that both groups were comparable in terms of health-related quality of life (of stroke survivors), Caregiver Strain Index, and patients' satisfaction with care. One study showed that the cost of telerehabilitation was lower than usual care by US $867. Conclusions: Telerehabilitation can be a suitable alternative to usual rehabilitation care in poststroke patients, especially in remote or underserved areas. Larger studies are needed to evaluate the health-related quality of life and cost-effectiveness with the ongoing improvements in telerehabilitation networks.

Abstract:Background: The incidence and mortality rates of stroke are escalating due to the growing aging population, which presents a significant hazard to human health. In the realm of stroke, brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has gained considerable attention as a means to enhance treatment efficacy and improve quality of life. Consequently, a bibliometric visualization analysis was performed to investigate the research hotspots and trends of BCI technology in stroke, with the objective of furnishing reference and guidance for future research. Methods: This study utilized the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-Expanded) within the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database as the data source, selecting relevant literature published between 2013 and 2022 as research sample. Through the application of VOSviewer 1.6.19 and CiteSpace 6.2.R2 visualization analysis software, as well as the bibliometric online analysis platform, the scientific knowledge maps were constructed and subjected to visualization display, and statistical analysis. Results: This study encompasses a total of 693 relevant literature, which were published by 2,556 scholars from 975 institutions across 53 countries/regions and have been collected by 185 journals. In the past decade, BCI technology in stroke research has exhibited an upward trend in both annual publications and citations. China and the United States are high productivity countries, while the University of Tubingen stands out as the most contributing institution. Birbaumer N and Pfurtscheller G are the authors with the highest publication and citation frequency in this field, respectively. Frontiers in Neuroscience has published the most literature, while Journal of Neural Engineering has the highest citation frequency. The research hotspots in this field cover keywords such as stroke, BCI, rehabilitation, motor imagery (MI), motor recovery, electroencephalogram (EEG), neurorehabilitation, neural plasticity, task analysis, functional electrical stimulation (FES), motor impairment, feature extraction, and induced movement therapy, which to a certain extent reflect the development trend and frontier research direction of this field. Conclusion: This study comprehensively and visually presents the extensive and in-depth literature resources of BCI technology in stroke research in the form of knowledge maps, which facilitates scholars to gain a more convenient understanding of the development and prospects in this field, thereby promoting further research work.

Abstract:Background: Tele-rehabilitation for stroke survivors has emerged as a promising intervention for remotely supervised administration of physical, occupational, speech, and other forms of therapies aimed at improving motor, cognitive, and neuropsychiatric deficits from stroke. Objective: We aimed to provide an updated systematic review on the efficacy of tele-rehabilitation interventions for recovery from motor, higher cortical dysfunction, and poststroke depression among stroke survivors. Methods: We searched PubMed and Cochrane library from January 1, 1980 to July 15, 2017 using the following keywords: "Telerehabilitation stroke," "Mobile health rehabilitation," "Telemedicine stroke rehabilitation," and "Telerehabilitation." Our inclusion criteria were randomized controlled trials, pilot trials, or feasibility trials that included an intervention group that received any tele-rehabilitation therapy for stroke survivors compared with a control group on usual or standard of care. Results: This search yielded 49 abstracts. By consensus between 2 investigators, 22 publications met the criteria for inclusion and further review. Tele-rehabilitation interventions focused on motor recovery (n = 18), depression, or caregiver strain (n = 2) and higher cortical dysfunction (n = 2). Overall, tele-rehabilitation interventions were associated with significant improvements in recovery from motor deficits, higher cortical dysfunction, and depression in the intervention groups in all studies assessed, but significant differences between intervention versus control groups were reported in 8 of 22 studies in favor of tele-rehabilitation group while the remaining studies reported nonsignificant differences. Conclusion: This updated systematic review provides evidence to suggest that tele-rehabilitation interventions have either better or equal salutary effects on motor, higher cortical, and mood disorders compared with conventional face-to-face therapy.
Research Hotspots and Trends in the Research on the Application of VR in Rehabilitation Medicine

Abstract:Objective: To sort out the research hotspots of the application of VR in rehabilitation medicine, analyse its research themes and research trends, and offer a reference for future related research in this field. Methods: This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the development process, research hotspots and research trends in the field of VR application in rehabilitation medicine research, taking the Web of Science core dataset as the source and using bibliometric analysis by CiteSpace. Results: The application of VR in rehabilitation medicine was composed of three stages, and the research topics were reviewed in five aspects: neurological rehabilitation, psychology treatment, pain distraction, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, and visual spatial disorder. Limitations: The literature data only come from the Web of Science core dataset, and the data sample size was not comprehensive. Conclusion: Overcoming VR technology-induced vertigo and mental disorders from overuse of VR are both challenges to research on the application of VR in rehabilitation medicine. In addition, developing VR products with better experience, developing standardized guidelines, and conducting more high-quality clinical studies are all future research trends for the application of VR in rehabilitation medicine.

Abstract:Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in developed countries. Due to population aging, the number of people requiring rehabilitation after stroke is going to rise in the coming decades. Robot-mediated neurorehabilitation has the potential to improve clinical outcomes of rehabilitation treatments. A statistical analysis of the literature aims to focus on the main trend of this topic. A bibliometric survey on post-stroke robotic rehabilitation was performed through a database collection of scientific publications in the field of rehabilitation robotics. By covering the last 20 years, 17,429 sources were collected. Relevant patterns and statistics concerning the main research areas were analyzed. Leading journals and conferences which publish and disseminate knowledge in the field were identified. A detailed nomenclature study was carried out. The time trends of the research field were captured. Opinions and predictions of future trends that are expected to shape the near future of the field were discussed. Data analysis reveals the continuous expansion of the research field over the last two decades, which is expected to rise considerably in near future. More attention will be paid to the lower limbs rehabilitation and disease/design specific applications in early-stage patients.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Telerehabilitation as a new subdiscipline of telehealth is the application of information technology to support and deliver rehabilitation services via two-way or multipoint interactive online telecommunication technology. This enables the therapist to optimize the timing, intensity, and duration of therapy which is often not possible within the constraints of face-to-face treatment protocols in current health systems. OBJECTIVE: To review the historical perspective and conceptual framework of telerehabilitation in neurological disorders. METHODS: A narrative review of the literature was performed for the historical perspective and a systematic review of the conceptual framework was performed using the PRISMA guidelines on chronic neurological disorders; multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, stroke, Parkinson's disease, cognitive impairment, and headaches. The search included articles from the past 20 years (2004 to 2024). RESULTS: Telerehabilitation dates back to the 1960s and early 1970s. Documented effective interventions were mostly on therapies for speech disorders. The conceptual framework consisted of three major components of telerehabilitation programmes including development, implementation, and evaluation. The COVID-19 pandemic suddenly made telerehabilitation come to the limelight because physical distancing became necessary. Out of the 110,000 articles downloaded, 43 met the inclusion criteria for review on the conceptual framework of telerehabilitation in relation to neurological disorders. The articles discussed multiple sclerosis (2), spinal cord disorders (1), stroke (17), Parkinson's disease (15), headaches (3), and cognitive disorders (5). All articles reviewed assessed the effectiveness of telemedicine except for the articles on multiple sclerosis and spinal cord disorders which examined the interphase between the technology and the end users. CONCLUSION: The future of telerehabilitation looks promising with the subsequent integration of innovative tools and applications. This will require the adaption of technology, continuous capacity building, education, and training of healthcare professionals to ensure that they are adequately equipped with the necessary skills to provide quality virtual reality rehabilitation care.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Telemedicine applications have been increasing due to the development of new computer science technologies and of more advanced telemedical devices. Various types of telerehabilitation treatments and their relative intensities and duration have been reported.OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review is to provide a detailed overview of the rehabilitation techniques for remote sites (telerehabilitation) and their fields of application, with analysis of the benefits and the drawbacks related to use. We discuss future applications of telerehabilitation techniques with an emphasis on the development of high-tech devices, and on which new tools and applications can be used in the future.METHODS: We retrieved relevant information and data on telerehabilitation from books, articles and online materials using the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) "telerehabilitation," "telemedicine," and "rehabilitation," as well as "disabling pathologies."RESULTS: Telerehabilitation can be considered as a branch of telemedicine. Although this field is considerably new, its use has rapidly grown in developed countries. In general, telerehabilitation reduces the costs of both health care providers and patients compared with traditional inpatient or person-to-person rehabilitation. Furthermore, patients who live in remote places, where traditional rehabilitation services may not be easily accessible, can benefit from this technology. However, certain disadvantages of telerehabilitation, including skepticism on the part of patients due to remote interaction with their physicians or rehabilitators, should not be underestimated.CONCLUSIONS: This review evaluated different application fields of telerehabilitation, highlighting its benefits and drawbacks. This study may be a starting point for improving approaches and devices for telerehabilitation. In this context, patients' feedback may be important to adapt rehabilitation techniques and approaches to their needs, which would subsequently help to improve the quality of rehabilitation in the future. The need for proper training and education of people involved in this new and emerging form of intervention for more effective treatment can't be overstated.
