Abstract:Solar-induced photothermal catalysis of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising method for chemical CO2 conversion. Modification of the metal oxide catalyst surface, including the introduction of oxygen vacancies and the doping and loading of metal or metal oxides, has a considerable influence on the product selectivity of the CO2RR. The complete free energy profiles of the CO2RR pathway on modified anatase TiO2 (101) surfaces are calculated based on density functional theory. The modified surfaces enhance the adsorption of CO2, and competition between desorption and reduction of the key intermediates (CO*, HCOOH*, HCHO*, and CH3OH*) is crucial to the selectivity for the CO2RR to form C1 products. The loading of Au and the doping of MgO enhance the electron transfer between the key intermediates and the surface, as well as the internal electron transfer inside the key intermediates, which efficiently activates the key intermediates and significantly increases the CH4 selectivity of the CO2RR.

Abstract:Ir-based heterogeneous catalysts for photocatalytic CO2 reduction have rarely been reported and are worthy of investigation. In this work, TiO2 nanosheets with a higher specific surface area and more oxygen vacancies were employed to support Ir metal by impregnation (Imp) and ethylene glycol (EG) reduction methods. In comparison with Ir/TiO2 (Imp) and TiO2, Ir/TiO2 (EG) exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance toward CO2 reduction, especially for CH4 production on account of the oxygen defect of TiO2 and rich surface hydroxyl groups produced from the interaction between TiO2 nanosheets and metallic Ir. In situ ESR suggested that the oxygen defect was significant for CO2 adsorption/activation. Furthermore, metallic Ir was beneficial for photogenerated electron transfer, surface hydroxyl generation, and adsorption of the CO intermediate, generating more available electrons and reducing agents for CH4 production. In situ CO2 DRIFTS confirmed the key synergistic interaction between the oxygen defect and metallic Ir in the photoreduction from CO2 to CH4.
Synergistic effect of atomically dispersed Cu species and Ti-defects for boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction over hierarchical TiO2

Abstract:The photocatalytic water-mediated CO2 reduction reaction, which holds great promise for the conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals, is often hindered by inefficient separation of photogenerated charges and a lack of suitable catalytic sites. Herein, we have developed a glycerol coordination assembly approach to precisely control the distribution of atomically dispersed Cu species by occupying Ti-defects and adjusting the ratio between Cu species and Ti-defects in a hierarchical TiO2. The optimal sample demonstrates a ∼4-fold improvement in CO2-to-CO conversion compared to normal TiO2 nanoparticles. The high activity could be attributed to the Ti defects, which enhance the photogenerated charge separation and simultaneously facilitate the adsorption of water molecules, thereby promoting the water oxidation reaction. Moreover, by means of in situ EPR and FTIR spectra, we have demonstrated that Cu species can effectively capture photogenerated electrons and facilitate the adsorption of CO2, so as to catalyze the reduction of CO2. This work provides a strategy for the construction of atomic-level synergistic catalytic sites and the utilization of in situ techniques to reveal the underlying mechanism.

However, a more efficient TiO2 photocatalyst without noble metals is highly desirable for CO2 reduction, and it is both difficult and urgent to produce selectively valuable compounds. Here, a novel "single-atom site at the atomic step" strategy is developed by anchoring a single tungsten (W) atom site with oxygen-coordination at the intrinsic steps of classic TiO2 nanoparticles. The composition of active sites for CO2 reduction can be controlled by tuning the additional W5+ to form W5+ -O-Ti3+ sites, resulting in both significant CO2 reduction efficiency with 60.6 μmol g- 1 h- 1 and selectivity for methane (CH4 ) over carbon monoxide (CO), which exceeds those of pristine TiO2 by more than one order of magnitude. The mechanism relies on the accurate control of the single-atom sites at step with 22.8% coverage of surface sites and the subsequent excellent electron-hole separation along with the favorable adsorption-desorption of intermediates at the sites.

Abstract:Abstract Photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction is a sustainable and energy-consumption-free route to directly convert the greenhouse gas into chemicals. Given the vast amount of greenhouse gases, numerous efforts have been devoted to developing inorganic photocatalysts due to their stable, low-cost and environmental-friendly properties. However, more efficient titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) without noble metal or sacrifice/organic agent is highly desirable for CO 2 reduction practical application, and it is also difficult and urgently in demand for TiO 2 producing selectively valuable compounds, i.e. industrial chemicals and fuels. Here, we develop a novel “adatom at step” strategy via anchoring single tungsten atom oxide (STAO) site on intrinsic steps of classic TiO 2 nanoparticles. The composition of single-sites can be controlled by tuning the ratio of adatom W 5+ to neighboring Ti 3+ , resulting in significant CO 2 reduction efficiency and selectively yield of carbon monoxide (CO) or methane (CH 4 ) as main products. The W 5+ -dominated catalysts can achieve an ultrahigh photocatalytic CH 4 production of 59.3 μmol/g/h, while the Ti 3+ -dominated catalysts can achieve a CO production of 181.4 μmol/g/h, which both exceed those of pristine TiO 2 by more than one order of magnitude. The mechanism relies on the accurate control of atomic sites with high coverage and the subsequent excellent electron-hole separation along with favorable adsorption-desorption of intermediates on sites. This approach not only provides a novel strategy for inorganic catalytic single-sites with superior performance, but also identifies the rational design mechanisms of the efficient site with controllable production.

Abstract:Engineering the specific active sites of photocatalysts for simultaneously promoting CO2 and H2O activa-tion is important to achieve the efficient conversion of CO2 to hydrocarbon with H2O as a proton source under sunlight. Herein, we delicately design the In/TiO2-VO photocatalyst by engineering In single atoms (SAs) and oxygen vacancies (VOs) on porous TiO2. The relation between structure and performance of the photocatalyst is clarified by both experimental and theoretical analyses at the atomic levels. The In/TiO2- VO photocatalyst furnish a high CH4 production rate up to 35.49 lmol g-1 h-1 with a high selectivity of 91.3% under simulated sunlight, while only CO is sluggishly generated on TiO2-VO. The combination of in situ spectroscopic analyses with theoretical calculations reveal that the VO sites accelerate H2O disso-ciation and increase proton feeding for CO2 reduction. Furthermore, the VO regulated In-Ti dual sites enable the formation of a stable adsorption conformation of In-C-O-Ti intermediate, which is responsible for the highly selective reduction of CO2 to CH4. Fe-TiO2-x/TiO2 S-scheme homojunction for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Abstract:CO2-to-high value-added chemicals via a photocatalytic route is of interest but strangled by the low efficiency. Herein, a novel Fe-TiO2-x/TiO2 S-scheme homojunction was designed and constructed by using a facile surface modification approach whereby oxygen vacancy (OV) and Fe introducing on the TiO2 nanorod surface. The as-synthesized Fe-TiO2-x/TiO2 S-scheme homojunction exhibits positive properties on promoting photocatalytic CO2 reduction: i) the nanorod structure provides numerous active sites and a radical charge transfer path; ii) the doped Fe and OV not only synergistically enhance light utilization but also promote CO2 adsorption; iii) the Fe-TiO2-x/TiO2 S-scheme homojunction benefits photoexcited charge separation and retains stronger redox capacity. Thanks to those good characters, the Fe-TiO2-x/TiO2 homojunction exhibits superior CO2 reduction performances with optimized CO/CH4 generation rates of 122/22 μmol g-1h-1 which exceed those of pure TiO2 by more than 9.4/7.3 folds and most currently reported catalytic systems. This manuscript develops a facile and universal approach to synthesize well-defined homojunction and may inspire the construction of other more high-efficiency photocatalysts toward CO2 reduction and beyond.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and rising fossil fuel consumption have already resulted in global warming and energy crisis. Therefore, conversion of CO2 into fuels and chemicals is regarded as sustainable solution. Recent research has shown that applying an external electric or optical field promotes CO2 polarization and, in turn, favors catalytic conversion into organic molecules. Here, a titanium dioxide (TiO2) homojunction was formed on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). Then, massive oxygen defective TiO2 was obtained by dihydrogen reduction, resulting in a strong built-in electric field, of about 0.19 V, between perfect TiO2 and defective TiO2. The catalyst was analyzed by Kelvin probe force microscopy, time-resolved photoluminescence, wavelength-dependent fluorescence and electron paramagnetic resonance. Results show that the catalyst promotes carbon dioxide polarization and separation of photogenerated charges. The catalyst increased carbon dioxide conversion into carbon monoxide (CO) about sevenfold compared to pristine g-C3N4, and about sixfold compared to the 20TiO2/g-C3N4 precursor, under UV–visible light. This exceptional photocatalytic activity is explained by the formation of a built-in electric field by the defective TiO2.

Abstract:Single‐atom Pt anchored on 3D TiO2‐Ti3C2 is synthesized through an in situ transformation and photoreduction method. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the atomic interface engineering of single‐atom Pt and interfacial TiOTi, the optimized photocatalyst exhibits excellent CO2‐to‐CO conversion activity of 20.5 μmol g–1 h–1 with a selectivity of 96%, which is five times that of commercial TiO2 (P25). Solar‐driven CO2 conversion into valuable fuels is a promising strategy to alleviate the energy and environmental issues. However, inefficient charge separation and transfer greatly limits the photocatalytic CO2 reduction efficiency. Herein, single‐atom Pt anchored on 3D hierarchical TiO2‐Ti3C2 with atomic‐scale interface engineering is successfully synthesized through an in situ transformation and photoreduction method. The in situ growth of TiO2 on Ti3C2 nanosheets can not only provide interfacial driving force for the charge transport, but also create an atomic‐level charge transfer channel for directional electron migration. Moreover, the single‐atom Pt anchored on TiO2 or Ti3C2 can effectively capture the photogenerated electrons through the atomic interfacial PtO bond with shortened charge migration distance, and simultaneously serve as active sites for CO2 adsorption and activation. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the atomic interface engineering of single‐atom Pt and interfacial TiOTi, the optimized photocatalyst exhibits excellent CO2‐to‐CO conversion activity of 20.5 μmol g−1 h−1 with a selectivity of 96%, which is five times that of commercial TiO2 (P25). Abstract:Abstract Direct photocatalytic CO 2 reduction from primary sources, such as flue gas and air, into fuels, is highly desired, but the thermodynamically favored O 2 reduction almost completely impedes this process. Herein, we report on the efficacy of a composite photocatalyst prepared by hyper-crosslinking porphyrin-based polymers on hollow TiO 2 surface and subsequent coordinating with Pd(II). Such composite exhibits high resistance against O 2 inhibition, leading to 12% conversion yield of CO 2 from air after 2-h UV-visible light irradiation. In contrast, the CO 2 reduction over Pd/TiO 2 without the polymer is severely inhibited by the presence of O 2 ( ≥ 0.2 %). This study presents a feasible strategy, building Pd(II) sites into CO 2 -adsorptive polymers on hollow TiO 2 surface, for realizing CO 2 reduction with H 2 O in an aerobic environment by the high CO 2 /O 2 adsorption selectivity of polymers and efficient charge separation for CO 2 reduction and H 2 O oxidation on Pd(II) sites and hollow TiO 2 , respectively.

Abstract:In photocatalysis, the most efficient way to separate photogenerated electron-hole pairs has been extensively studied. However, the methods to increase the quantities of free electrons are neglected. Herein, we used a self-assembly method to fabricate MTCPP/TiO2 composite materials with a series of metalloporphyrins (MTCPPs, M = Fe, Co, Zn) as sensitizers to modify TiO2 nanosheets. First, abundant carboxyl and hydroxyl on porphyrin were adsorbed by metal ions. Then, the remaining carboxyl and hydroxyl on porphyrin were anchored on the surface of TiO2 nanosheets. Finally, MTCPP/TiO2 was obtained by a layer-by-layer self-assembly process. MTCPP broadens the light response of TiO2 from ultraviolet light to visible light and enhances the CO2 adsorption ability. Moreover, metal ions coordinating with porphyrin regulate the electron density of the porphyrin ring and provide a stronger π feedback bond, which promote charge separation. Consequently, by optimizing the type of metal ion, the yield of ZnTCPP/TiO2 composites reached 109.33 μmol/(g h) of CO and 9.94 μmol/(g h) of CH4, which was more than 50 times that of pure TiO2. This study proposes a possible visible-light-induced CO2 reduction mechanism of metal-ion-based photocatalysis, which provides great insights into optimizing the designation of efficient photocatalysis.

Abstract:CO2 conversion into chemical fuels is a sustainable approach to the concurrent mitigation of the energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. It is still urgently desirable but quite challenging to explore a promising catalyst for CO2 photoreduction due to the severity in the fast recombination of electron holes and the deficiency of active sites, which have a tremendous influence on the catalytic behavior. In this regard, mesoporous TiO2 nanospheres containing oxygen vacancies (OVs) and metallic Au nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully prepared and showed markedly enhanced CO2 reduction activity and CH4 selectivity by the simple combination of photocatalysis with the simultaneous photothermal effect under full-spectrum irradiation. The dual introduction of OVs and a Au/TiO2 Schottky junction can not only serve as an electron sink to significantly improve the charge separation/transfer efficiency but also show effective photothermal conversion to raise the local temperature of the catalyst, thus resulting in an enhanced shuttle of electrons and desorption of products. Abstract:A well-designed photocatalyst with excellent activity and selectivity is crucial for photocatalytic CO2 conversion and utilization. TiO2 is one of the most promising photocatalysts. However, its excessive surface oxidation potential and insufficient surface active sites inhibit its activity and photocatalytic CO2 reduction selectivity. In this work, highly dispersed Bi2Ti2O7 was introduced into defective TiO2 to adjust its oxidation potential and the generation of radicals, further inhibiting reverse reactions during the photocatalytic conversion of CO2. Moreover, an in situ topochemical reaction etching route was designed, which achieved defective surfaces, a contacted heterophase interface, and an efficient electron transfer path. The optimized heterophase photocatalyst exhibited 93.9% CH4 selectivity at a photocatalytic rate of 6.8 μmol·g-1·h-1, which was 7.9 times higher than that of P25. This work proposes a feasible approach to fabricating photocatalysts with well-designed band structures, highly dispersed heterophase interfaces, and sufficient surface active sites to effectively modulate the selectivity and activity of CO2 photoreduction by manipulating the reaction pathways.

Abstract:There is an urgent need for technologies to combat acute global climate change. To tackle this challenging task, the research group aims to develop a novel catalyst to serve CO2, a kind of infamous greenhouse gas, as a sustainable carbon resource contributing to the green productions of fine chemicals. Here in this work, the heterojunction photocatalyst containing mesoporous TiO2 (m-TiO2) and α-Fe2O3 has been deployed for the conversion of CO2 and H2O into CH3OH at 300 °C. The photocatalysts are synthesized by the sol-gel method and characterized by various techniques to study their physical and chemical properties. The dark adsorption experiments for these as-prepared photocatalysts were carried out in the airtight gas cell from vacuum to different pressure gradients with CO2 at ambient temperature by the transmission mode of FTIR measurements. Moreover, the associated intermediate species of CO2 hydrogenation were identified by diffusive reflectance infrared techniques (DRIFT). By using CO2 temperature programmed desorption (TPD) analysis, the higher CO2 adsorption capacity of m-TiO2/α-Fe2O3 heterojunction (0.054 mmol/g) was confirmed than that of the α-Fe2O3 (0.017 mmol/g) and m-TiO2 (0.015 mmol/g).
