Abstract:Abstract Background Self-efficacy has been recognized as a critical component in people’s participation and maintenance of physical activity. This study aims to validate the Chinese version of the Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale (ESE) among Chinese children and adolescents using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on two primary and two secondary schools in central China. The ESE scale was translated into Chinese (ESE-C) using the standard forward-backward translation method. Data were analyzed using Mplus 8 for the CFA. Results The final model showed a satisfactory level of goodness-of-fit (CFI = 0.918; TLI = 0.905; SRMR = 0.043; RMSEA = 0.066), indicating a good construct validity of the ESE-C for children and adolescents in mainland China. Furthermore, the final ESE-C model achieved composite reliability values of 0.963 and average variance extraction values of 0.597, indicating sufficient convergent and discriminant validity. Besides, the Cronbach’s alpha value was 0.964, demonstrating excellent internal consistency of the ESE-C scale. Conclusion The ESE-C scale is a valid instrument for assessing exercise self-efficacy among children and adolescents in mainland China.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to verify the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the Exercise Self - Efficacy Scale (ESE - C) among Chinese children and adolescents. Specifically, the researchers hope to evaluate the construct validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity and internal consistency of the ESE - C scale in this specific population through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). In addition, the study also explores the applicability of the ESE - C scale among students in different school - age segments (primary school and secondary school) to ensure that the scale can be effectively used to measure the exercise self - efficacy of Chinese children and adolescents. ### Research Background 1. **Insufficient Physical Activity**: Globally, insufficient physical activity and sedentary behavior among children and adolescents have become an increasingly serious health problem. Especially in China, more than 87% of children and adolescents do not meet the physical activity standards recommended by the World Health Organization. 2. **The Importance of Self - Efficacy**: Self - efficacy (that is, an individual's confidence in his or her ability to complete a certain task) is considered a key factor in promoting and maintaining physical activity participation. In behavior change theories, self - efficacy is regarded as an important psychological construct, especially in the Transtheoretical Model (TTM), it plays an important role in promoting physical activity participation and continuation. 3. **Limitations of Existing Tools**: Although there are multiple scales for assessing exercise self - efficacy, there is currently no validated Chinese version of the ESE scale. This limits the ability to conduct relevant research in China, because researchers have to use self - developed or translated versions, which may lack scientificity and reliability. ### Research Purposes - **Verify the Validity and Reliability of the ESE - C Scale**: Evaluate the construct validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity and internal consistency of the ESE - C scale among Chinese children and adolescents through the CFA method. - **Explore the Applicability in Different School - Age Segments**: Analyze primary school students and secondary school students separately to determine the applicability of the ESE - C scale in these two groups. ### Methods - **Participants**: 1,573 primary and secondary school students from Jiangxi province in China, aged between 9 and 15 years old. - **Measurement Tools**: The ESE - C scale, which contains 18 items and is scored using a 5 - point Likert scale. - **Statistical Analysis**: Use Mplus 8 software to conduct CFA, evaluate the model fit indices, and calculate the composite reliability (CR), average variance extracted (AVE) and Cronbach's alpha value. ### Results - **Overall Sample**: The final model shows good fit indices (CFI = 0.918; TLI = 0.905; SRMR = 0.043; RMSEA = 0.066), indicating that the ESE - C scale has good construct validity among Chinese children and adolescents. - **Different School - Age Segments**: In the primary school and secondary school samples, the ESE - C scale also shows good fit indices, and the CR and AVE values reach acceptable standards. - **Internal Consistency**: The Cronbach's alpha value is 0.964, indicating that the ESE - C scale has extremely high internal consistency. ### Conclusions This study provides strong evidence to support the validity and reliability of the ESE - C scale in measuring exercise self - efficacy among Chinese children and adolescents. This provides a reliable tool for future relevant research in China and helps to develop more effective intervention measures to promote physical activity participation among children and adolescents.
