Abstract:This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

Rank-Ordering Statistics of Extreme Events: Application to the Distribution of Large Earthquakes

Abstract:Rank-ordering statistics provides a perspective on the rare, largest elements of a population, whereas the statistics of cumulative distributions are dominated by the more numerous small events. The exponent of a power law distribution can be determined with good accuracy by rank-ordering statistics from the observation of only a few tens of the largest events. Using analytical results and synthetic tests, we quantify the systematic and the random errors. We also study the case of a distribution defined by two branches, each having a power law distribution, one defined for the largest events and the other for smaller events, with application to the World-Wide (Harvard) and Southern California earthquake catalogs. In the case of the Harvard moment catalog, we make more precise earlier claims of the existence of a transition of the earthquake magnitude distribution between small and large earthquakes; the $b$-values are $b_2 = 2.3 \pm 0.3$ for large shallow earthquakes and $b_1 = 1.00 \pm 0.02$ for smaller shallow earthquakes. However, the cross-over magnitude between the two distributions is ill-defined. The data available at present do not provide a strong constraint on the cross-over which has a $50\%$ probability of being between magnitudes $7.1$ and $7.6$ for shallow earthquakes; this interval may be too conservatively estimated. Thus, any influence of a universal geometry of rupture on the distribution of earthquakes world-wide is ill-defined at best. We caution that there is no direct evidence to confirm the hypothesis that the large-moment branch is indeed a power law. In fact, a gamma distribution fits the entire suite of earthquake moments from the smallest to the largest satisfactorily. Extraction of the strong coupling with HERA and EIC inclusive data

Abstract:Sensitivity to the strong coupling $\alpha_S(M^2_Z)$ is investigated using existing Deep Inelastic Scattering data from HERA in combination with projected future measurements from the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) in a next-to-next-to-leading order QCD analysis. A potentially world-leading level of precision is achievable when combining simulated inclusive neutral current EIC data with inclusive charged and neutral current measurements from HERA, with or without the addition of HERA inclusive jet and dijet data. The result can be obtained with substantially less than one year of projected EIC data at the lower end of the EIC centre-of-mass energy range. Some questions remain over the magnitude of uncertainties due to missing higher orders in the theoretical framework.

Abstract:With centre-of-mass energies covering the Z pole, the WW threshold, the HZ production, and the top-pair threshold, the FCC-ee offers unprecedented possibilities to measure the properties of the four heaviest particles of the Standard Model (the Higgs, Z, and W bosons, and the top quark), and also those of the b and c quarks and of the $\tau$ lepton. At these moderate energies, the role of the calorimeters is to complement the tracking systems in an optimal (a.k.a. particle-flow) event reconstruction. In this context, precision measurements and searches for new particles can fully profit from the improved electromagnetic and hadronic object reconstruction offered by new technologies, finer transverse and longitudinal segmentation, timing capabilities, multi-signal readout, modern computing techniques and algorithms. The corresponding requirements arise in particular from the resolution on reconstructed hadronic masses, energies, and momenta, e.g., of H, W, Z, needed to reach the FCC-ee promised precision. Extreme electromagnetic energy resolutions are also instrumental for $\pi^0$ identification, $\tau$ exclusive decay reconstruction, and physics sensitivity to processes accessible via radiative return. We present state of the art, challenges and future developments on some of the currently most promising technologies: high-granularity silicon and scintillator readout, dual readout, noble-liquid and crystal calorimeters.

Abstract:This is an introductory review of central topics in hadron physics that are addressed by high intensity, continuous electron beam facilities in the multi-GeV range. Exclusive processes are a crucial tool for increasing our knowledge of hadron wave functions beyond what can be learned from studies of hard inclusive processes. Data shows precocious scaling, suggesting a simple underlying picture. Important conceptual advances in the application of PQCD is being made.

Electron Scattering at the Intensity Frontier with SoLID

Abstract:The Solenoidal Large Intensity Device (SoLID) is a large acceptance spectrometer capable of operating at the luminosity frontier. It is proposed to fully exploit the scientific potential of the continuous electron beam accelerator facility (CEBAF) 12 GeV energy upgrade at Jefferson Lab. Its conceptual design is mature, having passed multiple reviews and been validated by a successful pre-R\&D phase. The envisioned scientific program consists of three avenues of research, namely the 3D momentum imaging of the structure of the nucleon, the origin of the proton mass through the gluonic gravitational form factors (GFFs), and the search of physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. These avenues are complemented by a growing supplemental list of run group experiments that address a variety of important topics.

Abstract:Circular colliders have the advantage of delivering collisions to multiple interaction points, which allow different detector designs to be studied and optimized - up to four for FCC-ee. On the one hand, the detectors must satisfy the constraints imposed by the invasive interaction region layout. On the other hand, the performance of heavy-flavour tagging, of particle identification, of tracking and particle-flow reconstruction, and of lepton, jet, missing energy and angular resolution, need to match the physics programme and the exquisite statistical precision offered by FCC-ee. During the FCC feasibility study (2021-2025), benchmark physics processes will be used to determine, via appropriate simulations, the requirements on the detector performance or design that must be satisfied to ensure that the systematic uncertainties of the measurements are commensurate with their statistical precision. The usage of the data themselves, in order to reach the challenging goals on the stability and on the alignment of the detector, in particular for the programme at and around the Z peak, will also be studied. In addition, the potential for discovering very weakly coupled new particles, in decays of Z or Higgs bosons, could motivate dedicated detector designs that would increase the efficiency for reconstructing the unusual signatures of such processes. These studies are a crucial input to the further optimization of the two concepts described in the Conceptual Design Report, CLD, and IDEA, and to the development of new concepts which might actually prove to be better adapted to the FCC-ee physics programme, or parts thereof.

Searches for BSM physics at a gamma-gamma collider with Energy < $12$ GeV based on European XFEL

Abstract:The possibility of a Photon-Photon collider extension to the Beam dump of the $17.5$ GeV European XFEL has been discussed before as the first high energy collider of its sort. It would not just be to study the concept of photon colliders but would also be a collider without competition in the region of $5 - 12$ GeV for photon-photon collision. In this range, $b\overline{b}$ and $c\overline{c}$ resonances, tetraquarks as well as mesonic molecules can be observed. Furthermore, some BSM processes can also be reached in this range. In this paper we want to discuss the possibility of observing ALPs at such a collider. We will use a simplified description of the compton backscattering process to get a first look at cross sections and extend this to the full beam dynamics included prediction.

Abstract:The theoretical framework of hard exclusive reactions is reviewed with special emphasis on the Elfe project program. Perturbative QCD studies have shown that factorization properties allow to separate well-defined non perturbative objects which are crucial in the understanding of confinement dynamics from perturbatively calculable hard processes. The applicability of this factorization in a definite energy domain is controlled by some definite statements, as the dimensional counting rules, the helicity conservation law and the appearance of color transparency. The few data available indicate that the Elfe parameters indeed correspond to this well defined physics.

Abstract:We investigate the physics reach and potential for the study of various decays involving a transition at the Future Circular Collider running electron-positron collisions at the Z -pole (FCC-ee). Signal and background candidates, which involve inclusive Z contributions from , and uds final states, are simulated for a proposed multi-purpose detector. Signal candidates are selected using two Boosted Decision Tree algorithms. We determine expected relative sensitivities of 053%, 120%, 337% and 986% for the branching fractions of the , , and decays, respectively. In addition, we investigate the impact of detector design choices related to particle-identification and vertex resolution. The phenomenological impact of such measurements on the extraction of Standard Model and new physics parameters is also studied.

Abstract:FCC-ee, the lepton version of the Future Circular Collider (FCC), is a 100 Km future machine under study to be built at CERN. It acquires two experiments with a highest beam energy of 182.5 GeV. FCC-ee aims to operate at four different energies, with different luminosities to fulfil physics requirements. Beam-beam effects at such a high energy/luminosity machine are very challenging and require a deep understanding, especially in the presence of x-y coupling sources. Beam-beam effects include the beamstrahlung process, which limits the beam lifetime at high energies, as well as dynamic effects at the Interaction point (IP) which include changes in the beta functions and emittances. In this report, we will define the beam-beam effects and their behaviours in the FCC-ee highest energy lattice after introducing x-y coupling in the ring.

Abstract:The properties of the diffractive peak observed in the mass spectra of systems recoiling against observed high-momentum protons emerging from pp collisions at the CERN ISR have been investigated. The cross sections in this peak have been found to have a steep t dependence which flattens out as |t| increases. The high mass side of the peak varies approximately as 1/M2 (where M is the missing mass of the recoiling system) and scales well in terms of the variable M2/s. The position of the maximum has been observed to move to lower values of M2/s as the kinematic boundary of this variable decreases with increasing s. The measured cross sections, integrated up to M2/s=0.05, rise by (15±5)% over the s range 549 to 1464 GeV2.

Abstract:These lectures include an introduction to the partonic description of the proton, the photon and the `colour singlet', as seen in inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS, in $e^+e^-$ collisions, and in diffractive processes, respectively. Their formal treatment using structure, fragmentation, and fracture functions is outlined giving an insight into the perturbative QCD framework for these functions. Impact of beam asymmetries at the Future Circular Collider e+e-

Abstract:In this paper we present detailed simulations with asymmetric initial beam settings in the context of the proposed Future Circular Collider e+e- (FCC-ee) using the Xsuite framework. We compare simulated equilibrium bunch sizes and luminosities against an already existing analytical model, which shows remarkably good agreement for realistic small perturbations. We investigate the longitudinal top-up injection, the currently preferred injection scheme for the FCC-ee, using self-consistent simulations featuring beam-beam collisions with beamstrahlung and the injection process, for the first time. We present and assess the sensitivity and required precision of the nominal beam parameters in a potential real-life operation by providing first estimates of the tolerances in the initial asymmetry of several machine parameters, with respect to the 3D flip-flop mechanism, obtained from parameter scan simulations.

Abstract:The present work provides a literature survey of elastic scattering of exotic nuclei from 6He to 17F. It presents a set of definitions that allow different analyses to be put into a common language. A calculational approach is proposed that yields consistent results across different beams and targets so that conclusions concerning the influence of virtual and real breakup as well as transfer couplings on the elastic scattering may be drawn. Calculations of elastic scattering around the Coulomb barrier are emphasised, employing a Pb target whose large Z allows the interplay between nuclear and Coulomb forces to be exploited to maximise possible effects arising from proton or neutron haloes or skins. A series of test calculations is performed and where possible compared to data, demonstrating that there are instances where coupling to transfer channels can have a large effect on the elastic scattering angular distributions. By careful choice of target/beam combination, different aspects of the coupling effects may be emphasised.

Inclusive and diffractive neutrino-nucleus scattering at high energy

Abstract:We calculate the energy dependence of inclusive and diffractive neutrino-nucleus deep-inelastic scattering cross sections within the dipole picture, focusing on the ultra-high-energy regime. We predict an up to $\sim 10\%$ nuclear suppression in the inclusive neutrino-Oxygen scattering originating from the non-linear QCD dynamics in the small-$x$ Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution. Diffraction is found to be a small $1\dots 4\%$ contribution to the total cross section across a wide range of neutrino energies relevant for current and near-future experiments. The diffractive cross section is calculated separately for the coherent and incoherent channels that are found to be of equal importance. Additionally, we include the dominant contribution from the $|q\bar q g\rangle$ Fock state of the $W^\pm$ and $Z$ bosons in the high-$Q^2$ limit, along with the lowest-order $|q\bar q\rangle$ contribution. The $|q\bar{q}g\rangle$ contribution is found to be numerically significant, reaching up to 40\% of the diffractive cross section.

Abstract:The collimation system of the Future Circular Collider, operating with leptons (FCC-ee), must protect not only the experiments against backgrounds, but also the machine itself from beam losses. With a 17.8 MJ stored energy of the electron and positron beams, they are highly destructive, and beam losses risk to cause damage or a quench of superconducting elements. Accurate collimation simulation tools and models are needed to design the collimation system and optimize the collimation performance, including magnetic tracking, synchrotron radiation and optics tapering, as well as particle-matter interactions. As no existing code was found that incorporated all these features, a new simulation software tool has been developed. The tool is based on an interface between a particle tracking engine, pyAT or Xtrack, and a Monte-Carlo particle-matter interaction engine for collimator scattering, BDSIM, which is based on Geant4. Results from a simulation of edge scattering from a beam halo collimator in the FCC-ee are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the tool.

Abstract:This review paper describes the energy-upgraded CEBAF accelerator. This superconducting linac has achieved 12 GeV beam energy by adding 11 new high-performance cryomodules containing eighty-eight superconducting cavities that have operated CW at an average accelerating gradient of 20 MV/m. After reviewing the attributes and performance of the previous 6 GeV CEBAF accelerator, we discuss the upgraded CEBAF accelerator system in detail with particular attention paid to the new beam acceleration systems. In addition to doubling the acceleration in each linac, the upgrade included improving the beam recirculation magnets, adding more helium cooling capacity to allow the newly installed modules to run cold, adding a new experimental hall, and improving numerous other accelerator components. We review several of the techniques deployed to operate and analyze the accelerator performance, and document system operating experience and performance. In the final portion of the document, we present much of the current planning regarding projects to improve accelerator performance and enhance operating margins, and our plans for ensuring CEBAF operates reliably into the future. For the benefit of potential users of CEBAF, the performance and quality measures for beam delivered to each of the experimental halls is summarized in the appendix.

In the SPDRoot framework the simulation has been performed using the event generators: FRITIOF, Pythia8, and Pluto. The results have been compared with the differential cross section of the existing experimental data. The first estimations of the inclusive charged particle production asymmetries with Beam–Beam Counter have been obtained.
