Abstract:Humic acid (HA) removal from water with inorganic polyaluminum coagulants is reported in this paper. Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and three kinds of polyaluminum chloride sulfate (PACS) with a [SO42-]/[Al3+] (S) molar ratio of 0.02, 0.06, and 0.10 were prepared. The coagulation behaviors of these coagulants were investigated in the view of coagulant dosage, initial pH, and aging time. PACS (S=0.06) showed the best HA removal efficiency, and there was no restabilization within a broad effective dosage range. The proper initial pH range was broad and was 4.0-9.0 for PACS (S=0.06). The stability of PACS (S=0.06) reduced with a long aging time, so the proper aging time should not exceed 1 month. The aluminum species distribution, particle mean size, charge neutralization, and infrared spectrum of prepared coagulants were tested. Results showed that SO42- addition promoted the hydrolysis/polymerization of aluminum and reduced the charge neutralization capacity of PACS. Besides charge neutralization, the bridge-aggregation and sweep-flocculation mechanisms may play important roles for HA removal. Abstract:The coagulation behavior of polyaluminum chloride (PACl) with various basicities (B=OH/Al values) was investigated under different alkalinities. It is aimed to get better insights into the coagulation mechanisms involving interactions between hydrolyzed Al(III) products and particles. Jar tests were used to evaluate the coagulation efficiencies, including zeta potentials, residual turbidities (RT) and pH values. An optical monitoring technique of photometric dispersion analyzer (PDA) was utilized to observe the coagulation dynamics. The experimental results show that the traditional coagulant such as alum evolves a rapid hydrolysis after dosing and the in situ formed hydrolysis products can destabilize the kaolin particles by precipitation charge neutralization (PCN). The preformed polymeric species in PACls exhibit a relatively high stability after dosing and can form “electrostatic patches” on clay particle surfaces. These patches play a crucial role in “electrostatic patch coagulation” (EPC). Increasing alkalinity extends both PCN and EPC zones. Under the low alkalinity, EPC with high Alb contained in PACls works better than PCN coagulation; increased alkalinity improves the efficiency of traditional coagulant due to sweep flocculation. Under the higher alkalinity, more coagulant is required to achieve complete charge neutralization. The stoichiometric relationships between the dosage and alkalinity are different depending on the B values of PACls.

Abstract:The treatment of organic-polluted high hardness surface water by enhanced softening via precipitation using various coagulants, such as FeCl3, AlCl3 and polyaluminum chloride (PACl), was investigated in bench scale experiments. Higher removal of natural organic matter (NOM) (UV254 removal reaches about 50%) is achieved by enhanced softening with coagulant addition conditions as compared with conventional coagulation at natural pH or by softening alone without coagulation. It is found that PACl could enhance the formation of Mg(OH)2 precipitate to remove NOM efficiently at relative lower pH range (pH <10). Under this circumstance, the pH for enhanced softening can be decreased significantly into the practical pH range for treatment plant operation. The efficiency of enhanced softening is affected significantly not only by pH, coagulant type and dose, but also by raw water quality such as NOM characteristics, magnesium content and hardness. NOM with more hydrophobic content and higher molecular weight may be removed more easily in some situations. For water with higher content of Mg2+, the inflexion pH for favorable UV254 removal is lower. It is of practical value for organic-polluted water with high content of magnesium to be treated by enhanced softening with PACl.
Novel ferromagnetic nanoparticle composited PACls and their coagulation characteristics.

Abstract:Effects of magnetic nanoparticles on inorganic coagulants and their coagulation performances were studied in the present work. The Fe3O4–SiO2 core-shell particle (FSCSP) and superfine iron (SI), were compounded with polyaluminium chloride of basicity 2.0 (PACl2.0), providing magnetic PACl2.0s (MPACl2.0s). The physiochemical properties of ferromagnetic nanoparticles were investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the BET method and a zeta potentiometric analyzer. The Al species distributions of the MPACl2.0s and PACl2.0 were examined by liquid 27Al NMR. Jar tests were employed to evaluate the coagulation performances. Floc properties were assessed by use of the electromotive microscope (EM) and small angle laser light scattering (SALLS). The results showed that modified layers of nanoparticles mitigated agglomeration. FSCSP had a larger specific area and pore volume than SI. The addition of ferromagnetic nanoparticles obviously increased the content of Alun. MPACl2.0s performed better than PACl2.0 in turbidity removal and DOC removal when dosed less than 0.06 mmol/L as Al. Generally, PACl2.0 + FSCSP (50 mg/L) performed best. Large, loose and weak flocs were produced by MPACl2.0s, which were preferred for the magnetic powder recycling. A plausible structure, Al species-nanoparticles cluster, contributing to the unique properties of MPACl2.0 flocs, was proposed.

Abstract:Enhanced coagulation is considered to be among the best available techniques (BAT) for disinfection by-product (DBP) precursor removal in water treatment. Improving existing understanding requires further consideration of nuances of chemical speciation relative to source water chemistry. In this paper, the effect of alkalinity/pH and speciation on inorganic polymer flocculants, polyaluminum chlorides (PACls) for enhanced particle and natural organic matter (NOM) removal was investigated. Three kinds of well-characterized typical source waters in China with low, moderate, and high alkalinity were selected. Performance of coagulants is controlled not only by preformed species but also by those formed in situ. At neutral and basic pH values, PACls with higher basicity (ratio of OH(-)/Al), which have more stable preformed Alb (the rapid reacted species as in ferron assay), are more efficient for turbidity and NOM removal. At slightly acidic pH, PACls with lower basicity are more efficient since more Alb can be formed in situ. Optimal NOM removal was achieved at pH 5.5-6.5 for all PACls. Basicity, speciation, and dosage of coagulant should be optimized based on raw water alkalinity to enhance the removal efficiency of NOM.

Abstract:The relative importance of three different Al species, Ala (monomeric species, instantaneous reacted species), Alb (medium polymer species, reacted less than 120 min), and Alc (colloidal or solid species, no reaction), defined by timed complexation reaction rate measured by using ferron reagent in polyaluminum chloride (PACl) was investigated in terms of DOC (dissolved organic carbon), UV254, and turbidity removal efficiencies. Micro-polluted, typical North China, source waters were used to conduct the experiments. The results show that DOC removal is correlated well to the content of Alb. Removal of UV254 is determined by the content of Alb and Alc, particularly Alc. Turbidity removal is primarily related to the content of Alc; however, Alb could destabilize particles efficiently, and the flocs formed by Alb are not as large as those formed by Alc, which affected the settling efficiency. Unlike the preformed Alb, the in situ formed Alb could remove turbidity more efficiently since Alc is the dominant final species formed during coagulation. Ala shows a strong ability to react with some unsatisfied coordinate bonds of organic matter to facilitate particle and DOC removal. The distinct coagulation feature of Ala, Alb, and Alc can be applied to develop tailor-made PACl (with the correct distribution of Al species) to match the characteristics of raw water for optimized coagulation.

Abstract:The coagulation properties of high-Al_b polyaluminum chloride(PAC) were studied by jar test with the help of rheo-optical monitoring technique,and then its coagulation mechanisms were discussed.The results show that the high-Al_b PAC is still of the essential characteristics of PAC.Compared with the common PAC,the high-Al_b PAC has a much higher charge-neutralization ability,which can decrease the optimal dosage and improve the coagulation performance in low dosage evidently.The higher the Al_b content is,the better the high-Al_b PAC works in this respect mentioned above.The coagulation mechanisms of the high-Al_b PAC function in the forms of charge-neutralization and enmeshing-sweeping. The pH of coagulation system has an effect on the coagulation performance of the high-Al_b PAC.In the weak acidic system,the high-Al_b PAC has a higher charge-neutralization ability while lower in the weak alkaline system.Increasing the pH of coagulation system can widen the optimal dosage range and improve the coagulation performance.
Coagulation Properties of an Electrochemically Prepared Polyaluminum Chloride Containing Active Chlorine

Abstract:With high content of the Al13 species and the active chloride, an electrochemically prepared polyaluminum chloride (E-PAC1) presents integrated efficiency of coagulation and oxidation. The coagulation properties of E-PACI were systemically investigated through jar tests in the various water quality conditions. The active chlorine in E-PACI can significantly influence the coagulation behavior due to the active chlorine preoxidation, which can change the surface charge characteristic of organic matter (OM) in water. The active chlorine preoxidation could improve the E-PAC1 coagulation efficiency if the water possessed the characteristics of relatively low OM content (2 mg/L) and high hardness (278 mg CaCO3/L). In the water with medium content of OM (5 mg/L), dosage would be a crucial factor to decide whether the active chlorine in E-PAC1 aided coagulation process or not. Comparing with alkaline condition, active chlorine would show a more significant influence on the coagulation process in acidic region.

Abstract:Enhanced coagulation is an important way to remove natural organic matter and reduce disinfection by-products in traditional water treatment processes, in which the micromolecular organic matter that is difficult to be removed during conventional coagulation can be enhanced more conveniently by modulating the dominant Al species in the traditional metal salt coagulants (e.g., polymeric aluminum chloride, PACl). Based on the forcing hydrolysis characteristics of fine bubbles due to the adsorption of hydroxide ions on their surfaces, this study verified the adaptability of the forced PACl hydrolysis by fine bubbles under different operating conditions objectively and comprehensively. The morphological changes of PACl before and after forced hydrolysis by fine bubbles were characterized figuratively, and the evolution of the dominant Al species before and after forced hydrolysis by fine bubbles was reasonably elaborated. The experimental results showed that fine bubbles had the effect of forcing the hydrolysis of PACl with different degrees of alkalinity and modulating the dominant Al species. It was innovatively found that the mass transfer efficiency of the fine bubbles determined their efficiency in forcing PACl hydrolysis (Pearson's r = -0.9423) and the concentration of fine bubbles affected their capacity to force PACl hydrolysis (Pearson's r = 0.8189). At pH = 7 and an air flow rate of 20 mL/min, the DOC concentration of micromolecular organics and the DOC removal efficiency of total organics could be reduced by 0.54 mg/L and enhanced by 12.6 %, respectively, after forced PACl hydrolysis by fine bubbles. While deepening the mechanism of forced PACl hydrolysis by fine bubbles, the above results preliminarily verified the relevance and feasibility of modulating the dominant Al species through forced PACl hydrolysis by fine bubbles to improve the coagulation efficiency, which provided theoretical and data support for the construction of a fine bubble-enhanced coagulation process for drinking water treatment plants.

Abstract:Alb species [Al12 AlO4 (OH)24(7+)] is multinuclear hydroxyl compound formed in PAC hydrolysis-polymerization process, with properties of small particle sizes, much positive charge, high aggregation degree and large molecular weight. Alb species was purified from PAC containing high concentration of Alb species using ethanol-acetone mixed precipitation method. The influence of dosage, pH and inorganic ions on humic acid removal from simulative water was studied by measuring zeta potential and UV254. The PDA output (FI curve) was analyzed and the relationship between the parameters (S1, S2, H1, H2) of FI curve and coagulation mechanism were studied at different Alb dosage and pH. When the dosage was 4.3 to 6.3 mg x L(-1) and pH was 3.0 to 6.0, the highest humic acid removal efficiency was obtained. The existence of NH4+, SiO3(2-) and H2PO(-) inhibits the coagulation performance. The results of coagulation kinetics and Zeta potential studies revealed that Alb acted mainly by charge neutralization as well as adsorption bridge building in water treatment.

The fraction distributions of NOM and residual Al after coagulation in solution, colloid and sediment were analyzed as changes of coagulant dosage and pH. The influence of NOM, coagulant dose and pH on coagulation kinetics of AlCl3 was investigated using photometric dispersion analyzer compared with PACl. Monomeric Al species (Al-a) shows high ability to satisfy some unsaturated coordinate bonds of NOM to facilitate particle and NOM removal, while most of the flocs formed by Al-a are small and difficult to settle. Medium polymerized Al species (Al-b) can destabilize particle and NOM efficiently, while some flocs formed by Al-b are not large and not easy to precipitate as compared to those formed by colloidal or solid Al species (Al-c). Thus, Al-c could adsorb and remove NOM efficiently. The removal of contaminant by species of Al-a, Al-b and Al-c follows mechanisms of complexation, neutralization and adsorption, respectively Unlike preformed Al-b in PACl, in-situ-formed Al-b can remove NOM and particle more efficiently via the mechanism of further hydrolysis and transfer into Al-c during coagulation. Abstract:Humic acid was coagulated by aluminum chloride and polyaluminum (PACl) at different pH conditions. Aluminum speciation was investigated in details through combining electrospray ionization mass spectrometer (ESI-MS) with solid-state Al-27 magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR). Freeze-dried flocs from coagulation precipitates were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and solid-state C-13 cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR. This study also evaluated removal of disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors by PACl and AlCl3 coagulation during coagulation process. Particular emphasis was paid to the role of aluminum speciation and structure characterization in the preferential removal of precursors by coagulation. The results indicated that prehydrolyzed or in situ formed Al-13 species during coagulation process exhibited preferential removal for corresponding DBP precursors with relative structures. On one hand, for DBP precursors with aromatic and carboxylic structures, in situ Al-13 species were preferentially bound to these DBP precursors. Thus, more DBP precursors with aromatic and carboxylic structures were removed by AlCl3 than those by PACl at pH 5.0. On the other hand, for DBP precursors with aliphatic structures, aluminum coagulation was not responsible for reducing these precursors. However, oligomeric aluminum species and preformed Al-13 species were weak preferentially bound to DBP precursors with aliphatic structures

Abstract:The coagulation efficiency of polyaluminum silicate chloride (PASC) compared with that of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) for water treatment was studied by jar test.The experiment results showed that PASC was characterized by having better coagulation efficiency compared with PAC.The PASC prepared by copolymerization technique gave hetter coagulating effect than that prepared by composite technique under the same molar ratio of AI/Si.For the PASC prepared by copolymerization technique in the range of Al/Si=5～15,the less Al/Si molar ratio was ,the better the coagulation efficiency would be.For the PASC prepared by composite technique,however,the PASC could give good coagulation efficiency only at a proper molar ratio of Al/Si.Compared with PAC,temperature had less effect on PASC coagulation.

Abstract:The coagulation behaviour of polyaluminium chloride (PACl) with different contents of aluminium species (Al-m, Al-13, Al-u detected by Al-27 NMR spectroscopy) was investigated by using the conventional jar test together with studying the rate of floc size development, the zeta potential of particles and turbidity removal efficiency. Results show that Al13 has higher charge neutralisation ability, while Alu species contribute to the formation of hydroxide precipitates which have a rather open structure for capturing particles. The charge neutralisation plays a less important role in coagulation after the coagulant dosage reaching a certain value, while precipitate formation improves coagulation significantly.

Abstract:Using an instantaneous base-feeding method and a batch-feeding method, high-concentration polyaluminum chloride (PACl) products were prepared employing CaO as the basification reagent. The distribution and transformation of the Al species of PACl was explored for the first time over a broad total Al concentration (AlT) range. There is always an optimal basicity (B value) at which the product has the highest Alb content, whether AlT is high or low. The optimal B value and the highest Alb content obtained both decrease with increasing AlT. When the B value is lower than optimal, the overall reaction mainly leads to the production of Alb; when the B value is higher, the reaction leads to the production of Alc. During the dilution process, high B value PACl has a tendency towards Alb formation, while low B value PACl favors Alc formation. The transformation behaviors of Al species are influenced by AlT in the preparation or dilution process.
Effect of Al hydrates on minimization of disinfection-by-products precursors by coagulation with intensified pre-oxidation towards cyanobacteria-laden water

Abstract:Pre-oxidation is warranted to improve cyanobacteria removal and minimize disinfection by-products (DBPs) precursors for subsequent coagulation with polyaluminum chloride (PACl) in drinking water treatment. However, the reduction in DBP precursors strongly depends on the Al hydrates for PACl coagulation. This study aimed to investigate the effects of intensified NaOCl and ClO2 pre-oxidation on the removal of Microcystis aeruginosa (MA) and the corresponding halogenated DBP precursors by PACl coagulation with different Al hydrates. Two PACl coagulants, namely PACl-W with 51% monomeric Al and PACl-H with 71% polymeric Al, were used for FlocCAM jar test. The results have shown that the reductions in MA cell and algogenic organic matter (AOM) are more pronounced by sweep flocculation in PACl-W coagulation coupled with NaOCl pre-oxidation. In contrast, ClO2 pre-oxidation with PACl-H coagulation outperforms the floc formation and the reduction in each fluorescent DOM substance, especially for humic acid-like (HAL) substances reduction in response to charge neutralization. Regardless of pre-oxidation approach, PACl-H coagulation exhibits a superior reduction in carbonaceous DBP formation potential (C-DBPFP) comparative PACl-W coagulation, especially for intensified pre-oxidation (Cl2:DOC = 3:1). Intensified NaOCl pre-oxidation is effective to enhance DBPFP reduction in a similar way to ClO2 oxidation by coagulation with both PACl coagulants. In addition, it clearly demonstrates that the halogenated DBP precursors are well-correlated with UV254 absorbance on the basis of principal component analysis (PCA) inference. It is concluded that intensified NaOCl pre-oxidation is an alternative approach to ClO2 pre-oxidation for the minimization of DBP precursors in oxidation-coagulation processes for cyanobacteria-laden water treatment.

Al-c could adsorb and remove NOM efficiently. The removal of contaminant by species of Al-a, Al-b and Al-c follows mechanisms of complexation, neutralization and adsorption, respectively. Unlike preformed Al-b in PACl, in-situ formed Al-b can remove NOM and particle more efficiently via the mechanism of further hydrolysis and transfer into Al-c during coagulation. While the presence of NOM would reduce Al-b formed in-situ due to the complexation of NOM and Al-a.

Abstract:Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) has become a focus of many studies involving coagulation because of its advantages over traditional coagulants. In this study, a novel method involving an electrolysis process for preparing of PAC was developed. The products were characterized using 27Al NMR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Results indicated that the electrolysis process provided favorable conditions for the formation of significant quantities of active species (Al13 polymer) at relatively high concentrations of total Al (AlT) (0.2–2.0 mol l−1). For each concentration of AlT, there was an optimum molar ratio of OH/Al (n) for formation of Al13. The Al13 species was stable for more than 6 months in solution when the n value was <2.0. However, in solutions with n values above 2.2, the Al13 species gradually converted to other polynuclear forms that were not detectable by 27Al NMR spectroscopy. The results of DLS and TEM showed that the particles existing in PAC prepared by the electrolysis process were in the nanometer size range.
