Abstract:A brain-robot interface (BRI) based control system combined with the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) has been developed to achieve the navigation and control of a mobile robot in unknown environments. The BRI system is based on motor imagery(MI), which analyze the human electroencephalograph (EEG) signals through the CSP-based SVM classification algorithm. The SLAM system presented in this paper is improved by combining the RGB-D SLAM, optical flow and deep leaning based Recognition. The optical flow method is used to accurately track the displacement of ORB feature points which consume much less time than calculating the ORB characteristics in each image, while the deep learning based recognition reduce the error caused by detected moving objects, and the error of the localization is minimized through global graph-based nonlinear error optimization. Experiments have been taken by 3 operators and successfully certify the feasibility and efficiency of the whole system.
Motion Analysis and Control Realization of Omni-Directional Robot

Abstract:To real-time control omni-directional robot in dynamic environment,the designation of robot's motion controller was provided. The experiment was tested in Robocup platform and used omni-directional robot as research object. After analyzing the robot motion and the kinematics characteristics of the omni-directional robot with four orthogonal-wheels, the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) speed controller and feedback control were introduced. The motion control of the four-wheel omni-directional robot was implemented by using digital signal processing (DSP) as the kernel of controller, so that the robot motion was ensured. Experiments indicate that the controller is superior in real-time and robustness. In annual Robocup competition, the robot has satisfactory performance in this computationally intensive, dynamic environments.

Abstract:To achieve the better navigation performance of a mobile robot in the unknown environments, a novel human–robot hybrid system incorporating a motor-imagery (MI)-based brain teleoperation control is presented in this paper, where a deep-learning-based active perception is developed in the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) framework. Using the deep-learning-based object recognition in the red–green–blue-depth (RGB-D) data acquisition process, the designed SLAM approach can select the valid feature points effectively, and the speed of displacement tracking can be improved by combining the oriented FAST and rotated BRIEF (ORB) SLAM algorithm with the optical flow method. The global trajectory map can also be mended using graph-based nonlinear error optimization. In addition, to build the connection between human intentions and the robot control commands flexibly in the developed mobile robot, a common spatial pattern (CSP)-based support vector machine (SVM) classification algorithm is proposed so that the control commands can be obtained directly from the human electroencephalograph (EEG) signals, which are preanalyzed and classified using the phenomena of event-related synchronization/desynchronization (ERS/ERD). Experiments involving several operators have verified the effectiveness of the proposed framework in the actual unstructured environments. <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Note to Practitioners</italic> —This paper is motivated by the exploration of the mobile robots remotely controlled by the disables in an unstructured environment that includes some unknown moving objects in the background. In the conventional approaches, the image feedback and the brain–computer interface-based EEG signals invoked by the visual stimulus are used to guide the motion of the robots. In this paper, the MI of left or right hand is adopted as an input of the brain teleoperation system, and the EEG signals are classified into two categories representing two robot control commands through the designed algorithm. Besides, a deep-learning-based SLAM is designed to analyze the image and depth of the environmental information provided by the robot RGB-D sensor, and the results can be transferred into a 3-D map locating the robot and assisting the operator to understand the operating environment. It has been verified that the deep-learning-based SLAM presented is more efficient and robust than traditional SLAM. The feasibility of the system is demonstrated by a set of experiments in the corridor environment.

Abstract:In order to transport materials flexibly and smoothly in a tight plant environment, an omni-directional mobile robot based on four Mecanum wheels was designed. The mechanical system of the mobile robot is made up of three separable layers so as to simplify its combination and reorganization. Each modularized wheel was installed on a vertical suspension mechanism, which ensures the moving stability and keeps the distances of four wheels invariable. The control system consists of two-level controllers that implement motion control and multi-sensor data processing, respectively. In order to make the mobile robot navigate in an unknown semi-structured indoor environment, the data from a Kinect visual sensor and four wheel encoders were fused to localize the mobile robot using an extended Kalman filter with specific processing. Finally, the mobile robot was integrated in an intelligent manufacturing system for material conveying. Experimental results show that the omni-directional mobile robot can move stably and autonomously in an indoor environment and in industrial fields.

Abstract:This study presents the processes undertaken in the design and implementation of an omni-directional mobile robot using orthogonal wheels. The orthogonal wheel developed consists of ten rollers, achieves not only forward, reverse, left slide, right slide, but also rotation in situ. The mobile robot consists of four orthogonal wheels which independently powered by brushless DC motors. A DC industrial motherboard is adopted in the main controller, which constitutes a NMT network with the communication ports of four motor drivers by an extended CAN card. In the NMT network, the host computer is the CAN node master, and each motor driver is the CAN node slave. The host computer controls each motor's movement, and reads the motor's current, position and speed information through the NMT network in real-time. The experiment shows that the mobile robot can achieve omni-directional movement.

Abstract:In order to verify the omnidirectional walking theory and to meet the requirements of rapid prototyping and economy, a bipedal robot system AIRO based on commercial servo motor-driven joints is designed and implemented. Compared with other motor-driven biped robots of the same size, the structure body of AIRO is lighter, and the leg mass distribution is more in line with the principle of the linear inverted pendulum model. Firstly, the overall system composition of the robot is introduced, including the mechanical structure part and the control system part; Then, based on the linear inverted pendulum model principle and the input speed command of the system, the omnidirectional walking planning and control of the robot is realized in combination with the current state of the robot; Finally, a successful omnidirectional walking experiment was carried out on AIRO to verify the effectiveness of the biped robot motion system.

Abstract:This study presents the design of a six-wheeled outdoor autonomous mobile robot. The main design goal of our robot is to increase its adaptability and flexibility when moving outdoors. This six-wheeled robot platform was equipped with some sensors, such as a global positioning system (GPS), high definition (HD) webcam, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and rotary encoders. A personal mobile computer and 86Duino ONE microcontroller were used as the algorithm computing platform. In terms of control, the lateral offset and head angle offset of the robot were calculated using a differential GPS or a camera to detect structured and unstructured road boundaries. The lateral offset and head angle offset were fed to a fuzzy controller. The control input was designed by Q-learning of the differential speed between the left and right wheels. This made the robot track a reference route so that it could stay in its own lane. 2D LiDAR was also used to measure the relative distance from the front obstacle. The robot would immediately stop to avoid a collision when the distance between the robot and obstacle was less than a specific safety distance. A custom-designed rocker arm gave the robot the ability to climb a low step. Body balance could be maintained by controlling the angle of the rocker arm when the robot changed its pose. The autonomous mobile robot has been used for delivery service on our campus road by integrating the above system functionality.

Abstract:This paper presents the mechatronic system design and development of a four-wheel drive/steer (4WD4S) mobile robot as a non-holonomic omnidirectional robot, MARIO—Mobile Autonomous Robot for Intelligent Operations. An innovative integrated application of CAD/CAM/CAE and RP has been employed for rapid development of the robot chassis and other mechanical parts by using different software tools. Most of the parts were designed by 3D CAD software which allows further CAE analysis including structural and motion analysis. To reduce the manufacturing time and cost, CAM and RP have been used to manufacture the main parts. These master parts are manufactured by workshop machining and 3D printing. Robot Operating System (ROS) alongside Gazebo simulator have been utilized for modelling, simulation, software development and visualization which enabled to develop the optimum embedded system to control the robot. With this integrated approach, a prototype of MARIO has been developed with a reasonably low manufacturing cost and time.

Abstract:Purpose: Over the last few decades, the development of the hardware and software has enabled the application of advanced systems. In the robotics field, the UI design is an intriguing area to be explored due to the creation of devices with a wide range of functionalities in a reduced size. Moreover, the idea of using the same UI to control several systems arouses a great interest considering that this involves less learning effort and time for the users. Therefore, this paper will present a mobile application to control two industrial robots with four modes of operation. Design/methodology/approach: The smartphone was selected to be the interface due to its wide range of capabilities and the MIT Inventor App was used to create the application, whose environment is supported by Android smartphones. For the validation, ROS was used since it is a fundamental framework utilised in industrial robotics and the Arduino Uno was used to establish the data transmission between the smartphone and the board NVIDIA Jetson TX2. In MIT Inventor App, the graphical interface was created to visualize the options available in the app whereas two scripts in python were programmed to perform the simulations in ROS and carry out the tests. Findings: The results indicated that the use of the sliders to control the robots is more favourable than the Orientation Sensor due to the sensibility of the sensor and human limitations to hold the smartphone perfectly still. Another important finding was the limitations of the autonomous mode, in which the robot grabs an object. In this case, the configuration of the Kinect camera and the controllers has a significant impact on the success of the simulation. Finally, it was observed that the delay was appropriate despite the use of the Arduino UNO to transfer the data between the Smartphone and the Nvidia Jetson TX2.

Abstract:This paper explores two non‐linear control techniques for designing an effective control system for an omnidirectional autonomous mobile robot with four Mecanum wheels. Due to the unique wheel structure and four separate wheels, the robot has non‐linear dynamics and multiple inputs and outputs. This paper explores two non‐linear control techniques for designing an effective control system for an omnidirectional autonomous mobile robot with four Mecanum wheels. Due to the unique wheel structure and four separate wheels, the robot has non‐linear dynamics, multiple inputs and outputs. The first technique uses the state‐dependent Riccati equation (SDRE) to address optimal non‐linear control while considering energy and time constraints. The second technique, using an intermediate variable θ , has expanded the Hamilton‐Jacobi‐Belman equation in terms of the power series. Consequently, these equations are reduced to a set of recursive Lyapunov algebraic equations, leading to a closed‐form solution for solving the non‐linear optimal control problem. Finally, the maneuverability and path‐tracking capability of the robot are examined by highlighting the non‐linear term through numerical simulation.

Abstract:Mobile robots have emerged as versatile substitutes for human labor across diverse domains, offering promising applications in surveillance, healthcare, and beyond. Fundamental to their autonomy are the core capabilities of movement, perception, cognition, and navigation. This research introduces a novel approach known as the Dual PID based low-cost navigation system (DPLNS), designed specifically for indoor warehouse-like environments. The primary objective of this technique is to enable seamless point-to-point traversal. This is achieved through a fusion of gyroscope correction and visual PID control mechanisms. Leveraging a strategically positioned eagle-eye perspective camera, the system gained crucial insights for navigation. To ensure the uninterrupted execution of planned trajectories, the system employs the Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. This technology ensures smooth communication and coordination of actions. The experimental validation of the proposed strategy highlights its efficacy, positioning it as a promising solution for modern warehouse automation needs. By advancing the capabilities of mobile robots within warehouse contexts, this research not only addresses immediate operational demands, but also paves the way for broader applications across various other fields. The developed system enables robust detection and successful path traversal to the designated spot through a position control operating at average of 12.3 rad/s.

Abstract:The symmetry of the omnidirectional robot motion abilities around its central vertical axis is an important advantage regarding its driveability for the flexible interoperation with fixed conveyor systems. The paper illustrates a Hardware in the Loop architectural approach for integrated development of an Ominidirectional Mobile Robot that is designed to serve in a dynamic logistic environment. Such logistic environments require complex algorithms for autonomous navigation between different warehouse locations, that can be efficiently developed using Robot Operating System nodes. Implementing path planning nodes benefits from using Matlab-Simulink, which provides a large selection of algorithms that are easily integrated and customized. The proposed solution is deployed for validation on a NVIDIA Jetson Nano, the embedded computer hosted locally on the robot, that runs the autonomous navigation software. The proposed solution permits the live connection to the omnidirectional prototype platform, allowing to deploy algorithms and acquire data for debugging the location, path planning and the mapping information during real time autonomous navigation experiments, very useful in validating different strategies.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, Ahead of Print. The cordial existence of robots and humans in the same workstation is an important aspect of the deployment of autonomous systems. Usually, robots are integrated with auxiliary sensors for monitoring the surroundings and tackling unexpected actions. The incorporation of LiDAR (light detection and ranging) and SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) has gained the researcher's attention these days. The current study aims at developing a collision-free motion for an autonomous robot to ensure the least possible travel period at internodes. First, a SLAM-based algorithm for a static environment is proposed. A low-cost microcontroller Arduino UNO is used here along with LiDAR VL53L0X and is integrated with MATLAB to store and display the acquired data. The A* algorithm is used to navigate between the shortest paths on the obtained map. The robot is also integrated with radio frequency identification (RFID) sensors to automate the process. The proposed system would be useful for material handling, assistance, and cleaning purpose in large warehouses or households.

Abstract:Although additive manufacturing is a relatively new technology, it has been widely accepted by industry and academia due to the wide variety of prototypes that can be built. Furthermore, using mobile robots to carry out different tasks allows greater flexibility than using manipulator robots. In that sense, and based on those above, this article focuses on the design and assembly of a multi-configurable mobile robot that is capable of changing from a differential to an omnidirectional configuration. For this purpose, a sequential mechatronic design/control methodology was implemented to obtain an affordable platform via additive manufacturing which is easily scalable and allows the user to change from one configuration to another. As a proof of concept, this change is made manually. Fabrication, construction, and assembly processes for both structures are presented. Then, a hierarchical control law is designed. In this sense and based on Lyapunov's method, a low-level controller is developed to control the angular speed of the wheels to a desired angular speed, and a medium-level controller controls the robot's attitude to follow a desired Cartesian trajectory. Finally, the control strategies are implemented in both prototype configurations, and through experimental results, the theoretical analysis and the construction of the mobile robot are validated.

Abstract:To solve the problems of waste of human resources and cost in the development of logistics industry, an intelligent robot is designed to carry out material handling tasks with simple operation and high efficiency. Based on the multi-sensor three-degree-of-freedom manipulator, combined with STM32, OpenMV, motor and drive modules, PID closed-loop control, image processing, data analysis, power electronics, mechanical principle and other technologies are used to design and implement it. The results show that the device has the advantages of simple operation, stable performance, intelligent grasping and placing, etc. It can meet the needs of intelligent life and further improve people's quality of life.

Abstract:Traditional industrial robots can only repeat the planned path mechanically because they don't have the ability to obtain external information, so they can't complete the task well when the environment is unknown or the precise model of the workpiece can't be known. In this paper, a new type of intelligent handling robot is designed, and its structural design part is introduced in detail. In the control system part, JETSON NANO is the main controller, which integrates various sensors such as binocular camera, gyroscope and accelerometer, and is coupled with the software and hardware of micro deep learning computer to realize the system integration of control, image transmission and machine vision. The test results show that the system can complete the transportation work well.

Abstract:A The proposed system developed an omnidirectional algorithm to control autonomous mobile robots with three wheels. The implementation system consists of three Planet DC motors with rated power of 80 W for three wheels, three encoders for speed feedback, one encoder for distance feedback, and one digital compass sensor for angle feedback. The main system with an STM32F407 microcontroller is designed for directional control of wheels based the signal received from compass sensor and encoder and then controls three subsystems to adjust the steering speed of each wheel. The sub-system is built to control only one DC motor for each wheel with the built-in proportional integral derivative controller (PID) algorithm by an STM32F103 microcontroller. Furthermore, the directional control algorithm is developed for three omnidirectional wheels and a PID algorithm is designed to control the speed of DC motor for each wheel. From the results the proposed system has the advantages: (1) to auto adjust the angle and position; (2) to erase the sensor for tracking line of the automobile robot; (3) cost-effectiveness and high accuracy

Abstract:The paper deals with the design and testing of a robot for industrial applications featuring omnidirectionality thanks to the use of mecanum wheels. While this architecture provides remarkable manoeuvrability in narrow or cluttered spaces, it has some drawbacks that limit its widespread deployment in practice, especially for heavy-duty and long-duration tasks. As an example, the variability in the mecanum wheel rolling radius leads to undesired dynamic ill-effects, such as slippage and vibrations that affect the accuracy of pose estimation and tracking control systems. Drawing on the modeling of the kinematic and dynamic behaviour of the robot, these effects have been tackled within an adaptive estimation framework that adjusts the robot control system based on the properties of the surface being traversed. The proposed approach has been validated in experimental tests using a physical prototype operating in real industrial settings.
Localization and Navigation for Indoor Mobile Robot Based on ROS

Abstract:In view of the high cost and complex structure of autonomous navigation robots in indoor environment, a low-cost, high-performance and simple structure scheme of mobile robot positioning and navigation is proposed and verified experimentally. A modular mobile robot platform was designed and the robot control system was divided into two parts: the upper control system and the real-time control system, which improved the stability of the system and reduced the coupling between modules. Lidar and RGB-D camera Kinect are used as main sensors to obtain information about the surrounding environment. The robot software system is developed by using a distributed software framework of robot operating system (ROS). The SLAM algorithm based on particle filter is used to achieve Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) in an unknown environment. The experimental results show that the system can build a map that is consistent with the environment in the indoor environment, and can complete the autonomous navigation task according to the created map. It not only has low cost and high performance, but also has the characteristics of short development cycle and easy expansion.
