Abstract:Background/Objectives: Despite the increased use of new resorbable magnesium membranes, there are no reported cases or studies on the use of resorbable magnesium membranes in combination with bone grafts for alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) in cases with severe buccal bone wall dehiscence. This case report aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the magnesium membrane shield technique in conjunction with bone grafting for ARP, assessing both clinical outcomes and histological bone regeneration. Methods: A 44-year-old female patient presented with a vertical fracture on tooth 24 (FDI Notation System) accompanied with complete destruction of the buccal bone wall. The treatment plan included tooth extraction, ARP using a combination of anorganic bovine bone and autologous bone grafting, and the application of a magnesium membrane as a shield to the pre-existing buccal wall. Six months post-procedure, a bone biopsy was taken from the implant site using a trephine bur. Results: Clinical and radiological evaluations six months after the procedure demonstrated sufficient bone volume for implant placement. Additionally, in the next three months, soft tissue conditioning with a provisional crown resulted in an aesthetically and functionally satisfactory outcome. Histological analysis of the bone biopsy revealed well-formed new bone in direct contact with residual biomaterial, with no signs of inflammation. Osteocytes were clearly visible within the newly formed bone matrix, indicating successful bone maturation. Active osteoblasts were observed along the bone-biomaterial interface, suggesting ongoing bone remodeling and integration. Additionally, histomorphometric evaluation revealed 47% newly formed bone, 32% soft tissue, and 19% residual biomaterial. Conclusions: This case demonstrates the potential of the magnesium shield technique as an ARP technique in cases with severe buccal wall dehiscence. The technique yielded satisfactory clinical outcomes and promoted successful bone regeneration, as confirmed by histological analysis.

Abstract:Barrier membranes are commonly used as part of the dental surgical technique guided bone regeneration (GBR) and are often made of resorbable collagen or non-resorbable materials such as PTFE. While collagen membranes do not provide sufficient mechanical protection of the covered bone defect, titanium reinforced membranes and non-resorbable membranes need to be removed in a second surgery. Thus, biodegradable GBR membranes made of pure magnesium might be an alternative. In this study a biodegradable pure magnesium (99.95%) membrane has been proven to have all of the necessary requirements for an optimal regenerative outcome from both a mechanical and biological perspective. After implantation, the magnesium membrane separates the regenerating bone from the overlying, faster proliferating soft tissue. During the initial healing period, the membrane maintained a barrier function and space provision, whilst retaining the positioning of the bone graft material within the defect space. As the magnesium metal corroded, it formed a salty corrosion layer and local gas cavities, both of which extended the functional lifespan of the membrane barrier capabilities. During the resorption of the magnesium metal and magnesium salts, it was observed that the membrane became surrounded and then replaced by new bone. After the membrane had completely resorbed, only healthy tissue remained. The in vivo performance study demonstrated that the magnesium membrane has a comparable healing response and tissue regeneration to that of a resorbable collagen membrane. Overall, the magnesium membrane demonstrated all of the ideal qualities for a barrier membrane used in GBR treatment.

Noninvasive temporal artery thermometry: physics, physiology, and clinical accuracy

Abstract:Temporal artery (TA) thermometry was developed in answer to requests by pediatricians for a replacement for: 1) ear thermometry due to inaccuracy; and 2) rectal thermometry due to parents’ (and most clinicians’) growing dislike of the method. The underlying technology development spans some 20 years, borrowing heavily from methods invented for industrial processes and medical research. Although the forehead has been used since antiquity to detect fever, its accuracy had always been questionable until physiological artifacts were understood and overcome, and mathematical modeling of arterial heat balance at the skin has made it possible to produce accurate core temperatures entirely non-invasively with just a scan of the forehead. Clinical studies have been conclusive as to TA superiority to ear thermometry, and well on the way to being conclusive as to TA at least as accurate as rectal. The physics are relatively straightforward, but the physiological requirements are not. Underlying physiological artifacts cause errors of more than 2 deg C in non-invasive thermometry and must be reduced by an order of magnitude to provide medically useful temperatures. Patented TA technology incorporates methods of dealing with physiological artifacts to overcome these errors. Mass screening for SARS containment with this method is examined.
Horizontal and Vertical Defect Management with a Novel Degradable Pure Magnesium Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) Membrane-A Clinical Case

Abstract:Background and objectives: In guided bone regeneration (GBR), large defects comprising both horizontal and vertical components usually require additional mechanical support to stabilize the augmentation and preserve the bone volume. This additional support is usually attained by using non-resorbable materials. A recently developed magnesium membrane presents the possibility of providing mechanical support whilst being completely resorbable. The aim of this case report was to describe the application and outcome of the magnesium membrane in combination with a collagen pericardium membrane for GBR. Materials and methods: A 74 year old, in an otherwise good general health condition, was presented with stage 2 grade A periodontitis and an impacted canine. After extraction of the impacted canine, a defect was created with both vertical and horizontal components. The defect was augmented using the magnesium membrane to create a supportive arch to the underlying bone graft and a collagen pericardium membrane was placed on top to aid with the soft tissue closure. Results: Upon reentry at 8 months, complete resorption of the magnesium devices was confirmed as there were no visible remnants remaining. A successful augmentation outcome had been achieved as the magnesium membrane in combination with the collagen membrane had maintained the augmented bone well. Two dental implants could be successfully placed in the healed augmentation. Conclusions: In this case, the magnesium membrane in combination with a collagen pericardium membrane presented a potentially viable alternative treatment to titanium meshes or titanium-reinforced membranes for the augmentation of a defect with both horizontal and vertical components that is completely resorbable. It was demonstrated that it is possible to attain a good quality and quantity of bone using a resorbable system that has been completely resorbed by the time of reentry.

Abstract:Bone preservation and primary regeneration is a daily challenge in the field of dental medicine. In recent years, bioresorbable metals based on magnesium (Mg) have been widely investigated due to their bone-like modulus of elasticity, their high biocompatibility, antimicrobial, and osteoconductive properties. Synthetic Mg-based biomaterials are promising candidates for bone regeneration in comparison with other currently available pure synthetic materials. Different alloys based on Mg were developed to fit clinical requirements. In parallel, advances in additive manufacturing offer the possibility to fabricate experimentally bioresorbable metallic porous scaffolds. This review describes the promising clinical results of resorbable Mg-based biomaterials for bone repair in osteosynthetic application and discusses the perspectives of use in oral bone regeneration.

Abstract:Biodegradable magnesium-based metal guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes possess excellent mechanical properties, biodegradability, and osteopromotive capabilities, making them ideal implants for the treatment of maxillofacial bone defects. This review summarizes the current status and future research trends related to magnesium-based GBR membranes. First, the research history and application fields of magnesium-based metals are introduced, and the advantages of the use of magnesium-based materials for GBR membranes, including their mechanical properties, biocompatibility, osteopromotive performance, and underlying mechanisms are discussed. Finally, this review addresses the current limitations of magnesium-based GBR membranes and their applications and prospects in the field of dentistry. In conclusion, considerable advancements have been in fundamental and translational research on magnesium-based GBR membranes, which lays a crucial foundation for the treatment of maxillofacial bone defects.

Abstract:Magnesium is a revolutionary biomaterial for orthopedic implants, owing to its eminent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. However, its uncontrolled degradation rate remains a severe challenge for its potential applications. In this study, we developed a self-healing micro arc oxidation (MAO) and dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) double-passivated coating on a magnesium membrane (Mg-MAO/DCPD) and investigated its potential for bone-defect healing. The Mg-MAO/DCPD membrane possessed a feasible self-repairing ability and good cytocompatibility. In vitro degradation experiments showed that the Mg contents on the coating surface were 0.3, 3.8, 4.1, 6.1, and 7.9% when the degradation times were 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks, respectively, exhibiting available corrosion resistance. The slow and sustained release of Mg<sup>2+</sup> during the degradation process activated extracellular matrix proteins for bone regeneration, accelerating osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs). The extract solutions of Mg-MAO/DCPD considerably promoted the activation of the Wnt and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways. Furthermore, the evaluation of the rat skull defect model manifested the outstanding bone-healing efficiency of the Mg-MAO/DCPD membrane. Taken together, the Mg-MAO/DCPD membrane demonstrates an optimized degradation rate and excellent bioactivity and is believed to have great application prospects in bone tissue engineering.

Abstract:The utilization of guided tissue regeneration membranes is a significant approach for enhancing bone tissue growth in areas with bone defects. Biodegradable magnesium alloys are increasingly being used as guided tissue regeneration membranes due to their outstanding osteogenic properties. However, the degradation rates of magnesium alloy bone implants documented in the literature tend to be rapid. Moreover, many studies focus only on the initial 3-month period post-implantation, limiting their applicability and impeding clinical adoption. Furthermore, scant attention has been given to the interplay between the degradation of magnesium alloy implants and the adjacent tissues. To address these gaps, this study employs a well-studied magnesium-aluminum (Mg-Al) alloy membrane with a slow degradation rate. This membrane is implanted into rat skull bone defects and monitored over an extended period of up to 48 weeks. Observations are conducted at various intervals (2, 4, 8, 12, 24, and 48 weeks) following the implantation. Assessment of degradation behavior and tissue regeneration response is carried out using histological sections, micro-CT scans, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The findings reveal that the magnesium alloy membranes demonstrate remarkable biocompatibility and osteogenic capability over the entire observation duration. Specifically, the Mg-Al alloy membranes sustain their structural integrity for 8 weeks. Notably, their osteogenic ability is further enhanced as a corrosion product layer forms during the later stages of implantation. Additionally, our in vitro experiments employing extracts from the magnesium alloy display a significant osteogenic effect, accompanied by a notable increase in the expression of osteogenic-related genes. Collectively, these results strongly indicate the substantial potential of Mg-Al alloy membranes in the context of guided tissue regeneration.
Enhancing osteogenesis and mandibular defect repair with magnesium-modified acellular bovine bone matrix

Abstract:An acellular bovine bone matrix modified to release Magnesium ions (Mg 2+ ) (ABBM-Mg) was prepared and evaluated for its potential in osteogenesis and mandibular defect repair. Mg 2+ was incorporated into ABBM using an ion exchange method. The microstructure and mechanical properties of both ABBM and ABBM-Mg were analyzed using SEM and a biomechanical testing machine. Cytocompatibility, cell adhesion, and osteogenic differentiation were assessed using various methods including CCK-8, Live/Dead staining, SEM, ALP staining, and qPCR analysis in MC3T3-E1 cells. Additionally, a mandibular defect model in rats was established. The bone defect repair outcomes were evaluated using Micro-CT, histological HE staining, and Masson staining. The study showed that mineralization containing magnesium was redeposited on the surface of the three-dimensional porous ABBM, and the ABBM-Mg scaffold promoted cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation compared to the ABBM scaffold. In the rat mandibular defect model, the ABBM-Mg scaffold demonstrated superior bone repair ability. This study successfully incorporated Mg 2+ into ABBM without significantly affecting its microstructure and compressive strength. Furthermore, ABBM-Mg showed sustained release of Mg 2+ which enhanced cell proliferation, adhesion, and osteogenic differentiation in vitro, and promoted mandibular defect healing in rats. This research opens up new possibilities for the clinical application of functionalized acellular bone matrix.

Acceleration of De Novo Bone Formation with a Novel Bioabsorbable Film: a Histomorphometric Study in Vivo

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Different types of barrier membranes have been used in periodontal applications for the technology of guided tissue regeneration (GTR). The aim of this study was to characterize the biological effect of novel calcium alginate film (CAF) on bone tissue regeneration by using rabbit mandible defects model.METHODS:A critical size defect (5 mm in diameter) was created in the bilateral corner of mandible of 45 adult rabbits. The defects were covered with CAF served as the experimental group, or conventional collagen membrane (CCM) or left empty as the controls. Animals were killed after 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks. Morphological and histomorphometric studies were performed to evaluate their bone regeneration pattern and biological effects.RESULTS:Histological sections showed that bone regeneration pattern was centripetal in growth from defect rim. The quantitative histometry analysis revealed a significantly greater percentage of newly generated bone in CAF defects than that in CCM defects and empty defects from 2 to 6 weeks post-operation (P < 0.01). After 6 and 8 weeks, significantly more mature lamella bone had formed with CAF than with CCM. Empty control defects showed bone formation starting from the defect margins and incomplete healing even after 8 weeks.CONCLUSION:The CAF guided early bone growth and appeared more effective as a bioabsorbable GTR membrane than CCM. This study with mandible defect model suggests that bone defects augmented with CAF may offer most promising results from a histological and histomorphometric perspective.
Feasibility and Efficacy of a Degradable Magnesium-Alloy GBR Membrane for Bone Augmentation in a Distal Bone-Defect Model in Beagle Dogs

Abstract:We explored the feasibility and efficacy of a degradable magnesium (Mg) alloy guided bone regeneration (GBR) in the treatment of bone defects after tooth extraction. A GBR membrane (MAR-Gide (MG)) was used to treat a mandibular second molar (M2M)-distal bone defect (DBD). In eight beagle dogs, bilateral mandibular second and fourth premolars were hemi-sected. The distal roots were removed to create a two-wall bony defect of dimension 5 mm × 5 mm × 5 mm to simulate M2M-DBD. Thirty-two bone defects were assigned randomly into four groups according to GBR membranes (MG and Bio-Gide (BG)) applied and the time of killing (3 months and 6 months after surgery). The osteogenesis of bone defects and MG degradation were analyzed using micro-CT, histology (staining, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. MG did not increase the prevalence of infection, wound dehiscence, or subcutaneous emphysema compared with those using BG. Trabecular volume/total volume at 3 months (63.71 ± 10.4% vs. 59.97 ± 8.94%) was significantly higher in the group MG than that in the group BG. Implanted MG was degraded completely within 3 months, and “island-shaped” new bone was found near MG degradation products. A significant difference was not found in vertical bone height or percent of new bone formation (45.44 ± 12.28% vs. 43.49 ± 7.12%) between the groups. The concentration of rare-earth elements in mandibular lymph nodes of the group MG was significantly higher than that of the group BG (P≤0.017) but did not lead to histopathological changes. In summary, MG exhibited good biocompatibility and clinical applicability compared with BG in vivo. The osteogenic effect of MG could be enhanced by regulating the degradation rate of Mg-alloy.
A Simplified Bone Regeneration Technique for Implant Placement Using a Titanium Membrane

Abstract:The treatment of edentulism with dental implants is often combined with hard- and soft-tissue grafting procedures as a means to improve marginal bone stability and esthetic outcomes. One such method of hard-tissue grafting involves the utilization of a titanium membrane as a space maintenance device to contain the graft material and support the soft tissue. These membranes, however, are typically limited in their ability to be customized and, therefore, are often unsuitable for varying clinical situations. This case report presents a simplified prototype design of an abutment-associated titanium membrane. This design enables a greater level of customization and demonstrates stable clinical and radiographic results after 2 years of follow-up.
A New Polycaprolactone-Based Biomembrane Functionalized with BMP-2 and Stem Cells Improves Maxillary Bone Regeneration

Abstract:Oral diseases have an impact on the general condition and quality of life of patients. After a dento-alveolar trauma, a tooth extraction, or, in the case of some genetic skeletal diseases, a maxillary bone defect, can be observed, leading to the impossibility of placing a dental implant for the restoration of masticatory function. Recently, bone neoformation was demonstrated after in vivo implantation of polycaprolactone (PCL) biomembranes functionalized with bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP-2) and ibuprofen in a mouse maxillary bone lesion. In the present study, human bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs) were added on BMP-2 functionalized PCL biomembranes and implanted in a maxillary bone lesion. Viability of hBM-MSCs on the biomembranes has been observed using the “LIVE/DEAD” viability test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Maxillary bone regeneration was observed for periods ranging from 90 to 150 days after implantation. Various imaging methods (histology, micro-CT) have demonstrated bone remodeling and filling of the lesion by neoformed bone tissue. The presence of mesenchymal stem cells and BMP-2 allows the acceleration of the bone remodeling process. These results are encouraging for the effectiveness and the clinical use of this new technology combining growth factors and mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow in a bioresorbable membrane.

Immediate implant and socket preservation using sticky bone and leukocyte-platelet-rich fibrin in the anterior maxilla: A 3-year case report

Abstract:Introduction: Immediate implant in the esthetic area is a challenging procedure. Chronic infection often contributes to extensive bone loss and acute infection often precludes a safe, clean surgery. However, it is quite common to come across failing teeth in the esthetic area, where the patient often demands a faster rehabilitation. Case presentation: In this clinical case, a fractured upper central incisor was replaced by an immediate implant, and the perimetrical area was filled with heterologous bone blended with patient-derived leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) in the form of sticky bone. A Maryland bridge was bonded to the adjacent teeth with the intent to guarantee minimum esthetic to the patient. After 5 months, the implant was connected to a definitive abutment and crown. The facial and interdental soft tissue was maintained with appreciable success after 2 years. The pre-treatment and 2-year- post-treatment computed tomography scans revealed marginal bone preservation. Conclusion: The use of sticky bone and L-PRF in immediate implant sites helps prevent hard and soft-tissue collapse and may favor faster and sounder healing. Abstract:The innovative design offers an injectable bone substitute that addresses various detrimental pathologies associated with medication‐related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). It promotes vascularization, reduces inflammation, activates stem cells, and inhibits pathogens. The convenient implantation, assistance in blood clotting, and robust osteopromotive effects make it a promising solution for filling irregular bone defects and realizing functional regeneration. The healing of bone defects after debridement in medication‐related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a challenging medical condition with impaired angiogenesis, susceptible infection, and pro‐inflammatory responses. Magnesium (Mg) nanocomposite hydrogel is developed to specifically tackle multiple factors involved in MRONJ. Mg‐oxide nanoparticles tune the gelation kinetics in the reaction between N‐hydroxysuccinimide‐functionalized hyperbranched poly (ethylene glycol) and proteins. This reaction allows an enhanced mechanical property after instant solidification and, more importantly, also stable gelation in challenging environments such as wet and hemorrhagic conditions. The synthesized hydrogel guides mandible regeneration in MRONJ rats by triggering the formation of type H vessels, activating Osterix+ osteoprogenitor cells, and generating anti‐inflammatory microenvironments. Additionally, this approach demonstrates its ability to suppress infection by inhibiting specific pathogens while strengthening stress tolerance in the affected alveolar bone. Furthermore, the enhanced osteogenic properties and feasibility of implantation of the hydrogel are validated in mandible defect and iliac crest defect created in minipigs, respectively. Collectively, this study offers an injectable and innovative bone substitute to enhance mandible defect healing by tackling multiple detrimental pathologies.

Abstract:Reconstruction of defects in the maxillofacial region following traumatic injuries, craniofacial deformities, defects from tumor removal, or infections in the maxillofacial area represents a major challenge for surgeons. Various materials have been studied for the reconstruction of defects in the maxillofacial area. Biodegradable metals have been widely researched due to their excellent biological properties. Magnesium (Mg) and Mg-based materials have been extensively studied for tissue regeneration procedures due to biodegradability, mechanical characteristics, osteogenic capacity, biocompatibility, and antibacterial properties. The aim of this review was to analyze and discuss the applications of Mg and Mg-based materials in reconstructive oral and maxillofacial surgery in the fields of guided bone regeneration, dental implantology, fixation of facial bone fractures and soft tissue regeneration.

CSBD Healing in Rats after Application of Bovine Xenogeneic Biomaterial Enriched with Magnesium Alloy

Abstract:Xenogeneic biomaterials Cerbone® and OsteoBiol® are widely used in oral implantology. In dental practice, xenogeneic biomaterial is usually combined with autologous bone to provide bone volume stability needed for long-term dental implants. Magnesium alloy implants dissolve and form mineral corrosion layer that is directly in contact with bone tissue, allowing deposition of the newly formed bone. CSBD heals by intramembranous ossification and therefore is a convenient model for analyses of ostoconductive and osteoinductive properties of different type of biomaterials. Magnesium alloy-enriched biomaterials have not yet been applied in oral implantology. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate biological properties of potentially new bovine xenogeneic biomaterial enriched with magnesium alloy in a 5 mm CSBD model. Osteoconductive properties of Cerabone®, Cerabone® + Al. bone, and OsteoBiol® were also analyzed. Dynamics of bone healing was followed up on the days 3, 7, 15, 21, and 30. Calvary bone samples were analyzed by micro-CT, and values of the bone morphometric parameters were assessed. Bone samples were further processed for histological and immunohistochemical analyses. Histological observation revealed CSBD closure at day 30 of the given xenogeneic biomaterial groups, with the exception of the control group. TNF-α showed high intensity of expression at the sites of MSC clusters that underwent ossification. Osx was expressed in pre-osteoblasts, which were differentiated into mature osteoblasts and osteocytes. Results of the micro-CT analyses showed linear increase in bone volume of all xenogeneic biomaterial groups and also in the control. The highest average values of bone volume were found for the Cerabone® + Mg group. In addition, less residual biomaterial was estimated in the Cerabone® + Mg group than in the Cerabone® group, indicating its better biodegradation during CSBD healing. Overall, the magnesium alloy xenogeneic biomaterial demonstrated key properties of osteoinduction and biodegradidibility during CSBD healing, which is the reason why it should be recommended for application in clinical practice of oral implantology.

Abstract:Highlights • A structure-functional integrated Mg-Ca/Mg-Cu bilayer membrane was developed for the first time, which can serve as a candidate for guided bone regeneration (GBR) applications. • The Mg-Cu layer, intended to interface with soft tissue, boasts remarkable antibacterial properties, while the Mg-Ca layer, in contact with bone tissue, promotes bone regeneration within the defect cavity. • The Mg-Ca/Mg-Cu bilayer membrane with heterogeneous microstructure exhibits excellent flexural performance and controllable corrosion behavior. • The Mg-Ca/Mg-Cu bilayer membrane not only demonstrates biocompatibility with both MC3T3-E1 and L929 cells, but also effectively promotes osteogenic differentiation. Magnesium (Mg) alloys with biodegradability and excellent mechanical properties are in high demand for applications in guided bone regeneration (GBR). However, the clinical application of Mg alloys is hindered by infection risks and limited osteogenesis. Herein, a structure-functional integrated Mg-Ca/Mg-Cu bilayer membrane was rolled at 150 °C through various single-pass reductions by using online heating rolling. The Mg-Cu layer was specifically engineered to exhibit antibacterial properties tailored for gingival tissue, while the Mg-Ca layer was designed to support bone regeneration within the defect cavity. The bilayer membrane demonstrated a flexural yield strength of 421.0 MPa and a modulus of 58.6 GPa, indicating exceptional deformation resistance. Furthermore, it maintained notable structural stability by retaining 86.4% of its volume after 21 days in Hanks' solution. In vitro results revealed that the bilayer membrane exhibited favorable biocompatibility and promoted osteogenesis via the synergetic effect of released Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ ions. The rapid release of Cu 2+ ions and the creation of an alkaline environment further improved antibacterial properties, potentially preventing postoperative infections. Additionally, in an in vivo rat calvarial defect model, the membrane demonstrated its capability to stimulate new bone formation. In summary, the Mg-Ca/Mg-Cu bilayer membrane exhibited outstanding mechanical stability, favorable corrosion rates, extraordinary osteogenic and antibacterial activity simultaneously. Consequently, it holds promise as a robust barrier membrane in GBR applications.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) is the fourth most abundant element in the human body and is important in terms of specific osteogenesis functions. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the use of magnesium-based biomaterials (MBs) in bone reconstruction. We review the history of MBs and their excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability and osteopromotive properties, highlighting them as candidates for a new generation of biodegradable orthopedic implants. In particular, the results reported in the field-specific literature (280 articles) in recent decades are dissected with respect to the extensive variety of MBs for orthopedic applications, including Mg/Mg alloys, bioglasses, bioceramics, and polymer materials. We also summarize the osteogenic mechanism of MBs, including a detailed section on the physiological process, namely, the enhanced osteogenesis, promotion of osteoblast adhesion and motility, immunomodulation, and enhanced angiogenesis. Moreover, the merits and limitations of current bone grafts and substitutes are compared. The objective of this review is to reveal the strong potential of MBs for their use as agents in bone repair and regeneration and to highlight issues that impede their clinical translation. Finally, the development and challenges of MBs for transplanted orthopedic materials are discussed.

Shearing invariant texture descriptor from a local binary pattern and its application in paper fingerprinting

Abstract:In this paper, a Shearing Invariant Texture Descriptor (SITD) is proposed, which is a theoretically and computationally simple method based on the Rotation invariant Local Binary Pattern (Rot-LBP) descriptor. In real-world applications using flatbed scanners, such as paper texture fingerprinting, it’s common for a sheet of paper to rotate during the image acquisition process. Because the rotation is usually not based on the paper’s geometrical centre pivot, the produced image is deformed with irregular rotation resulting in shearing transforms. To tackle the shearing problem, the proposed SITD selects a few patterns from the conventional Rot-LBP to achieve either horizontal or vertical invariance. This paper presents the construction of the SITD operators and their performance in recognizing self-developed and standard image datasets, including real paper texture and Outex images, as well as those with distinctive shapes. The images were distorted with only a shearing transform. The self-developed images were distorted manually, while the standard images were distorted by software. The proposed description method achieved up to 100% correctly recognition rate in all the tested datasets based on the horizontal shear invariant operator. In addition to the accurate performance in all the conducted experiments, the operator significantly outperformed the Rot-LBP and another benchmark method, the Shearing Moment Invariant (SMI). The superiority of the descriptor in recognizing different types of patterns demonstrate its ability to be used in applications where the shearing transform is present.
