Abstract:Metal may affect maternal immune function, but few epidemiological studies have reported the associations between multiple-metal exposure and maternal immunoglobulin (Ig) levels. Based on the Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study, 1059 participants were included, and eleven metals in whole blood samples and serum IgA, IgG, IgE and IgM levels were measured. Linear regression, quantile-based g-computation (QGC), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were used to evaluate the associations. Compared with the first tertile of metal levels, arsenic (As) was negatively associated with IgE ( fi = -0.25, 95% confidence interval (CI) = -0.48 to -0.02). Moreover, significant associations of manganese (Mn) with IgA, IgG and IgM were demonstrated ( fi = 0.10, 95% CI = 0.04 to 0.18; fi = 0.07, 95% CI = 0.03 to 0.12; fi = 0.10, 95% CI = 0.03 to 0.18, respectively). Cadmium (Cd) were associated with higher levels of IgM. QGC models showed the positive association of the metal mixtures with IgA and IgG, with Mn playing a major role. Mn and Cd had positive contributions to IgM, while As had negative contributions to IgE. In the BKMR models, the latent continuous outcomes of IgA and IgG showed a significant increase when all the metals were at their 60th percentile or above compared to those at their 50th percentile. Therefore, exposure to metals was associated with maternal Igs, and mainly showed that Mn was associated with increased levels of IgA, IgG and IgM, and As was associated with low IgE levels. Associations of Prenatal Heavy Metals Exposure with Placental Characteristics and Birth Weight in Hangzhou Birth Cohort: Multi-pollutant Models Based on Elastic Net Regression

Abstract:Background: The human placenta is vulnerable to environmental pollutants, but the associations between exposure to multiple, correlated metals and placental characteristics have not been studied. Methods: The current study population was derived from the Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study. Whole blood and urine samples were collected from mothers during 20-28 gestational week. The concentrations of 11 metals in blood and 11 metals in urine were evaluated by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The data on placental characteristics and birth weight were retrieved from medical records. The elastic net (ENET) model combined with unpenalized regression model was employed to estimate the relationship between levels of metals and placental characteristics (placental weight, chorionic disc area, chorionic disc eccentricity, placental thickness, placental-fetal birth weight ratio) and birth weight. Mediation analysis was performed to explore the mediated effect of placenta on the association of prenatal metals exposure with birth weight. Results: Among 512 participants with urine metal levels, the ENET model retained Cadmium (Cd) and Selenium (Se) for placental weight. Further unpenalized regression model including Cd and Se simultaneously showed that one-unite increased natural-logarithm (hi)-transformed urine creatinine corrected (CC) Cd levels was associated with reductions in placental weight of -72 g (95% confidence interval (CI): -14.0, -0.4). Among 483 participants with blood metal levels, similarly, blood Cd levels were negatively associated with placental weight (beta =-7.5, 95% CI: -17.0, 1.9). Furthermore, mediation analysis demonstrated that urine CC-Cd level was associated with a 21.3 g decrease (95% CI: -42.0, -25, p - 0.024) in birth weight through a reduction in placental weight, while blood Cd levels presented a negative association at borderline significance. Conclusion: Our findings suggest a mediation effect of the placenta in the relationship between prenatal Cd exposure and lower birth weight. Additional studies with repeated assessment of exposure and more placental parameters are warranted to confirm this relationship. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Association of PCB, PBDE and PCDD/F Body Burdens with Hormone Levels for Children in an E-Waste Dismantling Area of Zhejiang Province, China

Abstract:Increased electronic waste (e-waste) has raised public concerns regarding exposure to numerous toxic contaminants, particularly polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). In China, the body burdens of PCBs, PBDEs and PCDD/Fs are associated with thyroid hormones in populations from e-waste dismantling sites; however, it is unclear whether this association occurs in children. In this study, we determined the serum levels of PCBs, PBDEs and PCDD/Fs and the endocrine hormones including free triiodothyronine (FT3), total triiodothyronine (TT3), free thyroxine (FT4), total thyroxine (TT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol and growth hormone (GH) in 21 children from an e-waste dismantling area and 24 children from a control area. The results showed that the mean levels of ∑PCBs and ∑PBDEs in the exposure group were significantly higher than in the control group (40.56 and 32.09 ng g(-1) lipid vs. 20.69 and 8.43 ng g(-1) lipid, respectively, p<0.01 for each), and the mean level of ∑PCDD/Fs in the exposure group was higher than in the control group, but the difference was not significant (206.17 vs. 160.27 pg g(-1) lipid, p>0.05). For the endocrine hormones, we did not find significant differences between the exposed and control groups, although the mean levels of FT3, TT3, TT4, ACTH, cortisol and GH were higher, whereas the mean levels of FT4 and TSH were lower in the exposed group. The mean level of ∑PBDEs was positively correlated with the mean levels of ∑PCBs (r=0.60, p<0.05) and ∑PCDD/Fs (r=0.61, p<0.05). Furthermore, the mean level of ∑PBDEs was positively correlated with ACTH (r=0.61, p<0.05). In conclusion, our data suggested that exposure to e-waste dismantling environment increased the body burdens of PCBs and PBDEs in local children and that these contaminants released from the e-waste might contribute to abnormal changes in hormone levels.
Exposure to multiple heavy metals associate with aberrant immune homeostasis and inflammatory activation in preschool children

Abstract:<p>Heavy metals generate adverse health effects by interfering with immune homeostasis and promoting inflammation in individuals. Our objective was to explore the induction of immune and inflammatory responses by multiple heavy metals in children living in the e-waste contaminated area. A total of 147 preschool children were recruited, including 73 children from Guiyu, a typical e-waste recycling area, and 74 from a reference group. Blood levels of heavy metals, including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As), were detected using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Immune cell counts (neutrophils, monocytes, lymphocytes) were determined by an automatic blood cell analyzer, pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1RA, IL-4, IL-10, IL-13) were analyzed by a Luminex 200 multiplex immunoassay instrument. Multiple correspondences and linear regression analyses were applied to investigate the relationships between heavy metal exposure and relevant parameters. Results shows Guiyu children had higher levels of Pb, Cd, Hg, As, IL-1β and IL-6, but decreased lymphocyte, IL-1RA and IL-13. Neutrophil count was positively correlated with Pb, Cd and Hg exposure. Anti-inflammatory IL-1RA concentration was negatively related with Pb, Cd, Hg and As, while pro-inflammatory IL-1β and IL-6 were positively correlated with Pb. Guiyu children may have dysregulated immune response and high inflammation risk. Exposure to Pb, Cd, Hg and As could be harmful for immune response and inflammatory regulation. Our finding of decreased IL-RA production in children exposed to Pb, Cd, Hg, and As is novel and could be an opportunity for future research.</p>

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution from informal e-waste recycling may adversely affect child growth. However, the potential toxic mechanisms from a population perspective remain unknown. Herein, 18 hair heavy metals, urinary metabolomics, and three child growth indices [i.e., weight-for-age Z-score (WAZ), height-for-age Z-score (HAZ), and BMI Z-score (BMIZ)] were measured in children from e-waste recycling (ER, N = 426) and control areas (CR, N = 247). We examined longitudinal changes in heavy metal exposure and child growth after e-waste control to further elucidate causal relationships. Results showed that children in regulated ER site were still exposed to higher levels of several heavy metals and experienced poorer growth compared to those in control areas. Elevated exposure to heavy metals like tin, antimony, lead, cadmium, and cobalt correlated with poor child growth, particularly affecting girls and younger children. Tin, rather than traditionally concerning heavy metals, exhibited the most crucial role in driving the adverse effects of metal mixtures on child growth. Reducing heavy metal exposure through e-waste control could notably improve child growth, confirming the causal relationship between heavy metal exposure and poor child growth and underscoring the health benefits of e-waste regulation. Our research identified the roles of steroid biosynthesis, folate biosynthesis, amino acid metabolism, and purine metabolism in mediating the effects of metal exposure on child growth. Testosterone glucuronide, riboflavin, folic acid, xanthosine, and xanthine emerged as key mediators, potentially serving as metabolic signatures of heavy metal exposure. These findings illuminate the toxic mechanisms underlying poor child growth resulted from heavy metal exposure, offering important insights from a population-based perspective. In addition to lead and cadmium, monitoring and regulating tin and antimony are crucial to mitigate their negative impact on child growth in e-waste recycling areas.

Distribution and Predictors of 20 Toxic and Essential Metals in the Umbilical Cord Blood of Chinese Newborns

Abstract:Early-life exposure to heavy metals and/or trace metal imbalances can have negative developmental effects. Here we sought to characterize exposure profiles for 20 heavy metals and trace elements in umbilical cord blood plasma and identify demographic predictors of exposure. Twenty metals were measured in cord plasma from 357 Chinese infants using ICP-MS. Relationships between demographic variables and metals were analyzed using generalized linear models and logistic regression. Ten metals (antimony [Sb], cobalt [Co], cesium [Cs], copper [Cu], lead [Pb], molybdenum [Mo], rubidium [Rb], selenium [Se], strontium [Sr], titanium [Ti], zinc [Zn]) were detected in all samples. Season of birth was the strongest predictor of metals in cord blood across analyses. Infants born in the spring had 0.1-0.2 mu g L-1 higher logAs and logCo in their cord blood (beta [95%CI] = 0.22 [0.01,0.42], p = 0.04; 0.11 [0.01,0.22], p = 0.04), while infants born in the summer had higher Sb, logB, logHg, and logZn (beta [95%CI] = 0.74 [0.24,1.24], p = 0.004; 0.11 [0.00,0.21], p = 0.04; 0.29 [0.08,0.49], p = 0.007; 0.18 [0.06,0.31], p = 0.005), compared to those born in fall/winter. Body Burdens of Heavy Metals Associated with Epigenetic Damage in Children Living in the Vicinity of a Municipal Waste Incinerator.

Abstract:To evaluate the body burdens of heavy metals correlated with health impact on school-age children living around a waste incinerator. A total of 81 children from the exposure area and 95 from the control area were recruited in our study. We measured the blood levels of chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) by an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), conducted comet assays, calculated the percentage of 5-methylcytosine (5 mC) and 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) by MethylFlash methylated and a hydroxymethylated DNA quantification kit, and performed the flow cytometry to detect the expressions of surface antigens (including CD3(+), CD19(+), CD3(+)CD4(+), CD3(+)CD8(+), and CD3(-)CD16(+) and/or CD56(+)) in peripheral lymphocytes. Besides, we measured hormonal levels, including triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), free triiodothyronine (F13), free thyroxine (FM), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and analyzed several regular hematological parameters. In addition, concentrations of heavy metals in environmental samples including rice, soils, vegetables, and drinking water were detected by ICP-MS. The mean blood levels of Cr, Cd, and Pb in the exposure group were all statistically higher than in the control group (2.57 vs. 0.79 mu g/L: 1.83 vs. 1.81 mu g/1.4 44.00 vs. 32.31 mu g/L, p< 0.01). The 5 mC and 5hmC levels in the exposure group were statistically lower (1.15% vs. 4.14%; 0.22% vs. 0.30%, p < 0.01), whereas the mean level of % tail DNA was statistically higher (10.10% vs. 8.62%, p < 0.01). Furthermore, the mean blood level of Cr and Pb was negatively correlated with the level of 5 mC (r = -0.279, r= -0.190, P < 0.05) in total population. In conclusion, children living in the vicinity of the municipal waste incinerator suffered increased body burdens of heavy metals (Cr, Cd, and Pb) associated with genotoxicity and epigenetic modifications. Abstract:<p>Perinatal exposure to dioxins affects steroid hormone synthesis. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the associations between perinatal exposure to dioxins and serum steroid hormone levels in preschool-aged children from an e-waste recycling region in China. In the present study, we enrolled 50 pairs of mothers and infants from the Taizhou, Luqiao region in 2015. Of the 50 pairs of mothers and infants, 42 pairs participated in this study when the children were 4 years old. We measured breast milk dioxin concentrations using high-resolution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Additionally, we used liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to measure the concentrations of progesterone, testosterone, androstenedione (A-dione), and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in serum samples from the 4-year-old children. We used multivariate linear regressions to assess the associations between dioxin congeners and steroid hormones. Results were reported as beta estimates and 95% confidence intervals by bootstrapping. We observed sex-related differences between breast milk dioxins and serum steroid hormone levels in 4-year-old children. An increase in breast milk dioxins was associated with a decrease in testosterone in serum samples from boys. Similarly, an increase in breast milk dioxins was associated with a decrease in progesterone levels in serum samples from girls. However, dioxins were not associated with changes in the levels of testosterone, DHEA, or A-dione in girls. Based on these results, we conclude that perinatal exposure to dioxins modifies steroidogenesis in preschool-aged children. However, the long-term impact of dioxins requires further large-scale studies to assess these effects in school-going children and adolescents.</p>

Abstract:[Objective] To examine association between multiple heavy metals exposure and development of three-yearold children and to provide evidence for preventing long-term effects of heavy metals exposure on children's health. [Methods] Three-year-old children(n=461) in a county without heavy metal pollution of Jiangsu province were enrolled in the study. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS) was used to examine the concentrations of lead, mercury, and cadmium in spot urine samples. The development conditions of the participants were measured by physical examination(body height, body weight, head circumference, and chest circumference) and the Gesell Developmental Scale(intelligence). SPSS 16.0 was used to analyze the association between the exposure and the selected health effects. [Results] The urinary concentrations of lead, mercury, and cadmium did not fit the normal distribution, and the median levels and the ranges were 2.64 μg/L(0.50-25.77 μg/L), 0.76 μg/L(0.10-9.51 μg/L), and 0.21 μg/L(0.02-2.62 μg/L), respectively. The median levels and the ranges of creatinine-corrected urinary lead, mercury, and cadmium concentrations were 5.80 μg/gCr(0.80-91.51 μg/gCr), 1.86 μg/gCr(0.21-28.55 μg/gCr), and 0.47 μg/gCr(0.05-4.61 μg/gCr), respectively. The height and weight of both the boys and the girls were higher than the national recommended values, reflecting good development condition. Trichotomous subgroups were generated by the P25 and the P75 of concentrations of lead, mercury and cadmium. The body height, weight, motor developmental quotient, adaptive behavior developmental quotient, language developmental quotient, and individual-social behavior were significantly different among the lead trichotomous subgroups. The motor developmental quotient was significantly different among the mercury trichotomous subgroups. The body height, weight, motor developmental quotient, adaptive behavior developmental quotient, language developmental quotient, and individual-social behavior were significantly different among the cadmium trichotomous subgroups. The body height, weight, head circumference, motor developmental quotient, and individual-social behavior were significantly different among the lead, mercury, and cadmium combined trichotomous subgroups. When regrouping by P95 of selected heavy metal exposure indicators as extremely high exposure and low exposure group, significant differences were found in the adaptive behavior developmental quotient for lead levels, and in the motor developmental quotient and the individual-social behavior for cadmium levels. With the help of multiple linear regression, the cadmium level was negatively associated with the body height. [Conclusion] The burden of heavy metals of children in a county of Jiangsu province is in a stable range. Yet relationship between the level of heavy metals and children's growth is not confirmed.
Exposure to metal mixtures and young children’s growth and development: A biomonitoring-based study in Eastern China

Abstract:Exposure to metal mixtures may affect children's health but the conclusions are controversial. We aimed to investigate the associations of metal mixture exposure with children's physical and behavioral development. 15 metals were detected in the urine samples of 278 preschoolers aged 3-6 years from eastern China. Multiple linear models and restricted cubic splines were used to evaluate dose-response relationships between single metal and children's physical and behavioral development. The Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) models, the weighted quantile sum (WQS) models and Quantile G-Computation were applied to evaluate the joint effects of metal mixtures. The results showed that arsenic (As) was negatively associated with z score of height for age (HAZ) in individual-metal models [β (95%CI): - 0.22 (-0.38, -0.06), P = 0.006]. Concerning children's behavioral development, multiple-metal models demonstrated a negative association with strontium (Sr) [β (95%CI): - 0.82 (-1.38, -0.26), P = 0.004], and a positive association with tin (Sn) [β (95%CI): 0.69 (0.16, 1.21), P = 0.010]. Notably, these associations remained significant or suggestive even after adjustments for multiple tests, sensitivity analyses, and application of different statistical models, including BKMR, WQS, and Quantile G-Computation. Furthermore, the study identified a negative joint effect of the metal mixture on HAZ, as demonstrated by BKMR and Quantile G-Computation models, with As playing an irreplaceable role in this observed impact. In summary, exposure to As appears to have adverse effects on HAZ, while exposure to Sn may hinder children's behavioral development. Conversely, exposure to Sr may have a protective effect on children's behavioral development. Additionally, the combined impact of metal mixtures is implicated in potentially impairing children's physical development, particularly in terms of HAZ.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common congenital malformations with a complex etiology, and environmental factors play an important role. Large epidemiology studies on prenatal exposure to selected heavy metals and their association with risk for CHDs are scarce and joint effects are not well understood.OBJECTIVES:To examine the association between prenatal exposure to selected heavy metals and risk for CHDs.METHODS:Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the maternal plasma concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead, and manganese were in 303 CHD cases and 303 healthy controls that were recruited in eight hospitals in China. Generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were fitted to evaluate the individual and joint effects of metal concentrations on CHDs.RESULTS:In GLMM, two metals were each significantly associated with an increased risk for CHDs [adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval): mercury, 2.88 (1.22-6.77); lead, 2.74 (1.00-7.57)]. In BKMR, CHD risk increased with mixture levels of the five metals when their concentrations were at the 40th percentile or higher, compared to when all metals were below their 35th percentile, and mercury was the major metal that contributed to the mixture effect. The interaction between mercury and lead was observed in BKMR.CONCLUSIONS:Using metal concentrations in maternal plasma obtained during the second or third trimester as exposure markers, we found that the risk of CHDs increased with the levels of the mixtures of As, Cd, Hg, Pb, and Mn, with Hg being the most important contributor to the mixture effect.

Associations between prenatal metal exposure and growth rate in children: Based on Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study

Abstract:Background It has been reported that prenatal metal exposure is associated with child anthropometry . However, studies focusing on the growth rate of anthropometry among children have not been conducted. This study aimed to examine associations between the exposure of multiple metals during pregnancy and the growth rate of anthropometry among offspring. Methods 743 mother-child pairs from the Hangzhou Birth Cohort Study (HBCS) were included. Levels of eleven metals in mother's blood during pregnancy were measured. Offspring had a mean of 5.7 measurements on anthropometric indicators including weight, length/height, head circumference, and body mass index (BMI) within 1.5 years of birth. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) model was used to investigate the associations between maternal metal exposure and growth rate of anthropometric indicators in children. Stratification analysis by sex was also examined. Results Levels of selenium (Se, β = 0.213, 95 % CI = 0.017 to 0.409, P = 0.033) were positively associated with length/height gain per month in children. Levels of chromium (Cr, β = 0.025, 95 % CI = 0.018 to 0.033, P < 0.001) were positively associated with the rate of weight gain. Levels of manganese (Mn, β = −0.030, 95 % CI = −0.052 to −0.008, P = 0.009) and cobalt (Co, β = −0.012, 95 % CI = −0.024 to −0.000, P = 0.044) were inversely associated with growth rate of head circumference. Children with higher maternal Mn levels had a lower BMI change rate. Associations between metals and growth rate were stronger in girls than in boys. Besides, significant associations between metal mixtures and growth rate were found. Conclusion Prenatal exposure to Se, Cr, Mn, and Co was associated with growth rate in children, with sex-specific disparities. Our results suggested important effects of maternal exposure to multiple metals on development in offspring.

Abstract:Context: Oral verrucous hyperplasia (OVH) is a premalignant lesion that may transform into an oral cancer. Aims: The present retrospective study was carried out to analyze the clinico-pathological features of verrucous hyperplasia (VH). Materials and Methods: Total 19 diagnosed cases of verrucous hyperplasia were retrospectively analyzed for demographic, clinical and histopathological features including dysplasia. Results: Average age of occurrence of lesion was 4 th decade of life, with male predominance (2:1) and common site of occurrence being buccal mucosa. Clinically it present as verrucous exophytic growth with sharp or blunt projections on surface, which corresponds histologically. Tobacco lime quid placement in buccal vestibule was key etiologic factor. Histopathologicaly 68% cases showed dysplasia out of which moderate dysplasia predominates (42%). Moderately dysplastic cases were found to be associated with mixed habit pattern. Maximum cases were treated with excision. Conclusion: Biopsy specimen comprising of adjacent normal epithelium is key in distinguishing verrucous hyperplasia from verrucous carcinoma. Clinical behavior and recurrence potential needs to be assessed with long term follow up studies.

Abstract:Previous epidemiological studies have reported that prenatal exposure to metals might have influence on fetal growth. Most studies assessed the effect of individual metals, while the investigation on the relationship between multiple metal exposure and fetal growth is sparse. The objective of the present study is to assess the joint impact of metal mixtures on fetal growth during pregnancy. A total of 1275 maternal-infant pairs from the Jiangsu Birth Cohort (JBC) Study were included to investigate the effect of maternal metal exposure on fetal biometry measures at 22-24, 30-32, and 34-36 weeks of gestation. Lead (Pb), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), vanadium(V), thallium (Tl) and barium (Ba) were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in maternal urine samples collected in the first trimester. We used general linear models and restricted cubic splines to test dose-response relationships between single metals and fetal growth. The weighted quantile sum (WQS) models were then applied to evaluate the overall effect of all these metals. We observed inverse associations of exposure to Pb, V and Cr with estimated fetal weight (EFW) at 34-36 weeks of gestation. Notably, maternal exposure to metal mixtures was significantly associated with reduced EFW at 34-36 weeks of gestation after adjusting for some covariates and confounders (aβ -0.05 [95% CI: 0.09, -0.01], P = 0.023), and this association was mainly driven by Cr (30.41%), Pb (23.92%), and Tl (15.60%). These findings indicated that prenatal exposure to metal mixtures might impose adverse effects on fetal growth.

Abstract:Informal electronic waste (e-waste) recycling results in serious environmental pollution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and heavy metals. This study explored whether there is an association between PBDEs, heavy metal and key growth- and development-related hormones in children from Guiyu, an e-waste area in southern China. We quantified eight PBDE congeners using gas chromatographic mass spectrometry, lead and cadmium utilizing graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, three thyroids with radioimmunoassay and two types of growth hormones by an enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA) in 162 children, 4 to 6 years old, from Guiyu. In blood, median total PBDE was 189.99 ng/g lipid. Lead and cadmium concentrations in blood averaged 14.53±4.85 µg dL-1 and 0.77±0.35 µg L-1, respectively. Spearman partial correlation analysis illustrated that lead was positively correlated with BDE153 and BDE183. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) was positively correlated with almost all PBDE congeners and negatively correlated with insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), whereas free triiodothyronine (FT3) and free thyroxine (FT4) were negatively correlated with BDE154. However, no correlation between the hormones and blood lead or cadmium levels was found in this study. Adjusted multiple linear regression analysis showed that total PBDEs was negatively associated with FT3 and positively associated with TSH. Notably, FT4 was positively correlated with FT3, house functions as a workshop, and father's work involved in e-waste recycling and negatively correlated with vitamin consumptions. TSH was negatively related with FT4, paternal residence time in Guiyu, working hours of mother, and child bean products intake. IGFBP-3 was positively correlated with IGF-1 and house close to an e-waste dump. These results suggest that elevated PBDEs and heavy metals related to e-waste in Guiyu may be important risk factors for hormone alterations in children.

Abstract:The postural activity of the temporal and masseter muscles in thirty-one patients with signs and symptoms of functional disorders were studied: before, during and after 3-6 months of occlusal splint therapy. The fluctuating signs and symptoms, as well as the postural activity of the temporal and masseter muscles were significantly reduced after treatment. Further, the coefficients of correlation within pairs of postural activity of the right and left muscles increased significantly. After cessation of the splint therapy the signs and symptoms recurred to the pre-treatment level within 1-4 weeks in about 80% of the patients. The results indicate that an occlusal splint can eliminate or diminish signs and symptoms of functional disorders and re-establish symmetric and reduced postural activity in the temporal and masseter muscles, which can facilitate procedures, such as functional analysis and occlusal adjustment.

Abstract:Background: Little is known about the effect of postnatal exposure to heavy metals on children's behavior problems. This study aimed to investigate the association between metal exposure during different stages of postnatal life and neurobehavioral outcomes in preschool children. Methods: Urinary concentrations of six metals (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, and vanadium) were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in 220 participants at two time points: before 1 year and at 5 years of age. Mothers completed the Child Behavior Checklist when the children were 5 years old. Multivariable linear and logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between metal concentrations and behavioral outcomes. We employed Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) to assess possible joint effects and potential interactions between metal mixtures and behavioral outcomes. Results: Concentrations of urinary arsenic (As) in infants were associated with higher scores for anxious/shy behavior problems (β ranging from 0.03 to 0.23). Further analyses showed that As exposure increased the odds of scores falling into the borderline or clinical range on anxious/depressed, affective, and pervasive developmental problems (ORs: 2.45-3.40). Stratification by sex indicated significance in girls but not in boys. BKMR analysis showed that, among the metal mixtures, As displayed a major effect on behavior scores. Concentrations of urinary cadmium in infants were also associated with higher behavioral scores but did not increase the risk of clinical problems. A cross-sectional survey in 5-year-olds did not show a significant association between concurrent metal exposure and behavioral outcome. Conclusion: Our results showed that exposure to As and Cd during infancy was associated with emotional problems in children. The effect of arsenic exposure was more pronounced among female infants. We suggest reducing exposure to toxic metals during early postnatal life to prevent behavioral problems in children."
