Abstract:Bacterial communities in two shallow eutrophic aquatic ecosystems (eastern China) were studied using culture-dependent methods, and their correlations with the other water parameters were analyzed. Although the values of the comprehensive trophic state index in Xizi Lake and Hangzhou Canal were almost identical, the abundances of cultivable bacterial communities, such as protein-hydrolyzing bacteria (PHB), fecal coliforms (FC), nitrogen-utilizing bacteria, phosphate-mineralizing bacteria, and cellulose-decomposing bacteria (CDB), differed significantly. They were much less in Xizi Lake than in Hangzhou Canal. Correlation analyses indicated that the abundances of physiological groups of bacteria were determined mainly by the biomasses of phytoplankton and zooplankton, rather than by the utilized substrates. Xizi Lake was an algae-dominated aquatic ecosystem, a situation that mainly arose from the influx of inorganic nutrients, and the Hangzhou Canal was bacteria-dominated due to the influx of organic sewage. Molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of isolates showed that there were 6 phylogenetic lineages out of 15 isolates screened from Xizi Lake, including γ-proteobacteria (5), β-proteobacteria (3), α-proteobacteria (2), actinobacteria (1), firmicutes (4), and bacteroidetes (1). While in Hangzhou Canal there were only 4 bacterial groups among 22 isolates, γ-proteobacteria comprised about 82%, α-proteobacteria made up 9%, firmicutes and bacteroidetes made up only 4.5%, respectively, and no β-proteobacteria were found. Enterobacteriaceae were the principal bacteria components in the two aquatic ecosystems, especially in the sewage-polluted Hangzhou Canal. It can be concluded preliminarily that the bacterial diversity in Xizi Lake is richer than that in Hangzhou Canal.

Abstract:Algae blooms present an environmental problem worldwide. In response to the outbreak of harmful algal blooms in cyanobacteria, the role of biological control has drawn wide attention, particularly for algicidal bacteria. The mechanism underlying algicidal activity was determined in our study. Algae-lysing bacteria used were separated from water and sediment collected from the Fenhe scenic spot of Taiyuan. Genetic and molecular identification was conducted by polymerase chain reaction amplification based on 16S rDNA gene. These bacterial strains were identified as Raoultella planticola and Aeromonas sp. The algae-lysing characteristics were evaluated on Microcystis aeruginosa. For the two algicidal bacteria, the high inoculation ratio (>8%) of bacteria strains contributed to the lytic effect. M. aeruginosa could be completely removed by these strains at different cell ages. However, the time used decreased with an increase in cell age. The removal rate was increased while M. aeruginosa was in the lag and logarithmic phases. The earlier bacteria strains could be inoculated, the sooner all algae could be removed. Both algicidal substances were protein, which could destroy the photosynthetic systems and break the cell of M. aeruginosa. The algicidal bacteria strain has important theoretical and practical significance for economic and feasible algae removal and provides good germplasm resources and technical support for the control of cyanobacterial bloom.

Abstract:Harmful algae blooms posing serious threats to the ecological environment occur frequently across the world. Multi-species algicidal bacteria were enriched by utilizing immobilized carriers in a pilot scale experiment, which significantly promoted the effect of algal control in the reactors. Under the optimal condition, the algicidal ratio and chlorophyll a degradation rate reached 87.69% and 47.00 μg/(L·d), respectively. The growth of Cyanophyta, diatom, Dinoflagellate and Cryptophyta was inhibited significantly by the joint action of algicidal bacteria and light shading of fillers, accounting for 53.74% and 36.47%, respectively. The results of 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing suggested algicidal bacteria (10.17%) belonging to 13 genera were enriched. Among the algicidal process, Bacillus and Pseudomonas played crucial roles. Fluorescence spectroscopy and UV254 were adopted to assess the release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the precursors of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Two efficient algicidal strains (C1, C4) were isolated which showed high homology with Enterobacter asburiae JCM6051(T) and Pseudomonas simiae oli(T), respectively. This study provided new insights into the in-situ bioremediation of eutrophication in fresh water.

Abstract:Introduction: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have been increasing in frequency and expanding their ranges on coastlines worldwide in recent decades. Algicidal bacteria play a pivotal role in eliminating HABs, yet the characteristics of bacterial communities and their algicidal activity during a Karenia longicanalis bloom remain poorly understood. Methods: In this study, we investigated bacterial communities using 16S rRNA sequencing during a K. longicanalis bloom to identify bacteria with high algicidal activity that could be isolated. Five sampling sites in Tongxin Bay, located in Lianjiang County, China, including TX1 to TX5, were selected based on the concentration of K. longicanalis cells. Results: Our 16S rRNA sequencing results revealed that the TX4 site was enriched with genera known to contain algicidal bacteria, such as Pseudoalteromonas and Alteromonas , which are members of the Gammaproteobacteria class, while Sulfitobacter , a member of the Alphaproteobacteria class, was enriched in the TX5 site. Among the 100 cultivable bacteria isolated from the 5 sampling sites, 6 exhibited an algicidal rate of over 80%, with FDHY-MQ5, isolated from the TX4 site, exhibiting an algicidal rate of approximately 100% against Karenia mikimotoi after 48 hours of challenge with 2% (v/v) bacterial volume (OD600=4.5) concentration. Our 16S rRNA sequencing result showed FDHY-MQ5 was a member of the Pseudoalteromonas genus, and this bacterium also demonstrated high algicidal activity against Heterosigma akashiwo and Alexandrium tamarense . Discussion: Our findings shed light on the changes in bacterial community structure and the algicidal behavior of bacteria towards algae during a K. longicanalis bloom, providing a research basis for a better understanding of HAB management.

Abstract:Water blooms caused by Microcystis aeruginosa broke out frequently all over the world,which caused serious environmental problems.In this study,an algae-lysing bacterium CA with a strong algicidal effect to M.aeruginosa was isolated from the Taihu Lake,China.Then CA was identified as Aquimonas sp.by morphological features,physiological and biochemical characteristics,as well as phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA sequences.The degradation rate of CA against M.aeruginosa cells and chlorophyll a were 100% and 83.9% within ten days,respectively.Algicidal effect of CA was positively correlated with the concentration of bacterial suspensions,while negatively correlated with algal concentration.The bacterial cell of CA had no algicidal effect,but their sterile filtrate could lyse M.aeruginosa significantly,indicating that CA lyse M.aeruginosa by an indirect way of excreting algae-lysing substance.The CA cell displayed algicidal effect when adding a small amount of beef extract,glucose or urea to liquid culture.These results indicated that strain CA had potential for controlling the bloom-forming cyanobacteria in freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract:Algal blooms that occur periodically in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs are associated with the cumulative effects of excess nutrients from industrial and agricultural development. Algicidal bacteria can be used as environmentally friendly biocontrol agents to manage harmful algal blooms in eutrophic water. However, there is still a dearth of studies on the effects of mixed algicidal agents, the persistence of algae removal efficiency, and the impacts on native aquatic microbial communities. Two strains of algicidal bacteria, Cellvibrio sp. G1 and Chitinimonas sp. G2, were previously isolated and purified from reservoir sediment. Herein, G1 and G2 broth cultures, alone and in combination (1:1, V/V), were added to eutrophic water collected from a park at the volume ratio of 5 %. Eutrophic water remediation efficiency under different treatments was monitored for 30 days, and microbial community dynamics in water were analyzed by full-length sequencing of the 16S rRNA genes. The best algae removal efficiency was observed in the water treated with G1 alone, as indicated by the highest algae removal rate of 41.3 %. The total nitrogen removal rates of G1, G2, and their combination were 33.47 %, 23.65 %, and 28.88 %, respectively; ammonia‐nitrogen removal rates were 24.11 %, 25.02 %, and 19.63 %, respectively; total phosphorus removal rates were 24.11 %, 25.02 %, and 19.63 %, respectively; and orthophosphate removal rates were 46.11 %, 44.37 %, and 27.92 %, respectively. In the water treated with G1 and/or G2, the major genera with algicidal capacity (i.e., Cellvibrio and Chitinimonas) were outcompeted by the well adapted genera (e.g., Pseudomonas). At the late stages of treatment, the algicidal genera decreased in relative abundance, leading to decline in algae removal efficiency and increase in chlorophyll concentration. Based on both eutrophic water remediation efficiency and environmental adaptability, G1 alone was superior to G2 alone or in combination with G1, thus having potential practical implications.

Abstract:The harmful algal blooms (HABs) can damage the ecological equilibrium of aquatic ecosystems and threaten human health. The bio-degradation of algal by algicidal bacteria is an environmentally friendly and economical approach to control HABs. This study applied an aerobic denitrification synchronization algicidal strain Streptomyces sp. LJH-12–1 (L1) to control HABs The cell-free filtrate of the strain L1 showed a great algolytic effect on bloom-forming cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ). The optimal algicidal property of strain L1 was indirect light-dependent algicidal with an algicidal rate of 85.0%. The functional metabolism, light-trapping, light-transfer efficiency, the content of pigments, and inhibition of photosynthesis of M. aeruginosa decreased after the addition of the supernatant of the strain L1 due to oxidative stress. Moreover, 96.05% nitrate removal rate synchronized with algicidal activity was achieved with the strain L1. The relative abundance of N cycling functional genes significantly increased during the strain L1 effect on M. aeruginosa . The algicidal efficiency of the strain L1 in the raw water was 76.70% with nitrate removal efficiency of 81.4%. Overall, this study provides a novel route to apply bacterial strain with the property of denitrification coupled with algicidal activity in treating micro-polluted water bodies.

Abstract:Harmful algal blooms (HABs) impacted negatively the water ecosystem, and produced toxic microcystins that poses toxic effect on liver, nervous, and genital system. The introduction of useful and adaptive algae-degrading microbes or bio-augmentation can be regarded as an efficient way to inhibit the outbreak of HABs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the application potential of algicidal bacteria named XMC, which is isolated from native snails. Response surface methodology (RSM) experiments showed that self-characteristic and various external conditions affected the actual algae inhibition ability of XMC. In particular, actual algicidal efficiency was strongly depend on the temperature and growth stage of XMC, and the maximum algicidal rate could reach 93.95% within 7 days. The degradation curve of Microcystis aeruginosa was compliant with the first-order kinetic model, which could be used to predict the degradation effect of Microcystis aeruginosa in engineering applications. The analysis results of algae dissolution products showed that algicidal bacteria XMC had both direct and indirect algicidal capacity. In addition, XMC had strong algicidal ability and greater environmental adaptability, and its algae dissolution products were environmentally friendly. All results indicated that XMC had the potential to be used in the bio-degradation of cyanobacteria bloom.

Abstract:Abstract A study was conducted to elucidate the mechanism of donor‐pecific Mixed Lymphocyte Reaction (MLR and Cell Mediated Lymphotoxicity (CML) unresponsiveness in a renal transplant recipient with a long‐term well‐functioning kidney. The peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of the recipient, who had not shown rejection since his transplantation 5 years previously, and those of his mother (donor), his father and two healthy third parties were examined. MLR, CML, semimicro MLR in a double chamber, interleukin‐2 (IL‐2) synthesis assay and limiting dilution assay were performed. This recipient showed donor‐pecific MLR and CML unresponsiveness. IL‐2 assay showed that the PBL of the recipient produced less IL‐2 against the donor than against the father and the third parties. The addition of exogenous recombinant IL‐2 (rIL‐2; Takeda Co.) to the priming MLR caused a recovery of CML against the donor. A limiting dilution assay indicated that cytotoxic T cell precursor (CTLp) frequencies against the donor and father did not differ. The suppressor assay in a double chamber indicated that the PBL of the recipient stimulated by the donor PBL had a non‐pecific suppressive effect on MLR, CML and IL‐2 synthesis of the PBL across the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) barrier. This suppressive effect was abolished by OKT3 or OKT8 monoclonal antibody and complement. Thus, the recipient had donor‐pecific suppressor T cells that produced a humoral non‐pecific suppressive factor only when stimulated by the donor PBL, and this factor suppressed PLR and CML by inhibiting IL‐2 synthesis of the PBL.

Abstract:The dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans is a harmful algal species that is globally distributed and poses a certain threat to marine ecosystems. Recent research has shown that the application of algicidal bacteria is a promising method to prevent and control such harmful algal blooms (HABs), given its advantages of safety and efficiency. In this study, a strain of algicidal bacterium LD-B6 with high efficiency against N. scintillans was isolated from the coastal waters of Lianyungang, China. 16S rDNA sequence analysis showed that the strain LD-B6 belongs to the genus Pseudoalteromonas . Furthermore, the algicidal effect of LD-B6 on N. scintillans was investigated. The results showed that strain LD-B6 exerted strong algicidal activity against N. scintillans . After 12 h of bacterial culture addition to algal cultures at a 2% final volume rate, the algicidal activity reached 90.5%, and the algicidal activity of LD-B6 was influenced by the density of N. scintillans . In addition, the algicidal bacterium LD-B6 was found to indirectly lyse algal cells by secreting extracellular compounds. These algicidal compounds were stable, indicating that they are not proteins. Importantly, strain LD-B6 was broadly general, showing varying degrees of lysing effects against five of the six algal species tested. On the basis of the described studies above, the algicidal powder was also initially developed. In summary, the isolated bacterial strain LD-B6 shows the potent algicidal capability to serve as a candidate algicidal bacterium against N. scintillans blooms.

Abstract:Water blooms have become a worldwide environmental problem. Recently, algicidal bacteria have attracted wide attention as possible agents for inhibiting algal water blooms. In this study, one strain of algicidal bacterium B5 was isolated from activated sludge. On the basis of analysis of its physiological characteristics and 16S rDNA gene sequence, it was identified as Bacillus fusiformis. Its algaelysing characteristics on Microcystis aeruginosa, Chlorella and Scenedesmus were tested. The results showed that: (1) the algicidal bacterium B5 is a Gram-negative bacterium. The 16S rDNA nucleotide sequence homology of strain B5 with 2 strains of B. fusiformis reached 99.86%, so B5 was identified as B. fusiformis; (2) the algal-lysing effects of the algicidal bacterium B5 on M. aeruginosa, Chlorella and Scenedesmus were pronounced. The initial bacterial and algal cell densities strongly influence the removal rates of chlorophyll-a. The greater the initial bacterial cell density, the faster the degradation of chlorophyll-a. The greater the initial algal cell density, the slower the degradation of chlorophyll-a. When the bacterial cell density was 3.6 fi 107 cells/ml, nearly 90% of chlorophyll-a was removed. When the chlorophyll-a concentration was less than 550 μg/L, about 70% was removed; (3) the strain B5 lysed algae by secreting metabolites and these metabolites could bear heat treatment.

Abstract:The expanding impact of algal blooms on marine areas poses a severe threat to the sustainable development of aquaculture, human health, and the ecological safety of coastal areas. To address this issue, the exploration of natural algicidal compounds with high efficiency, selectivity, and environmental friendliness has gained attention as potential substances for algae removal. However, the integration of related work still needs to be improved. Therefore, an in-depth study of algicidal strategies and applications of algicidal compounds for biodiversity has become crucial. Here, we aim to consolidate the current advancements in research on the sources and types of algicidal compounds. We also delve into various algicidal strategies, including the damage inflicted on algal structures, inhibition of photosynthesis, effects on oxidative damage, and impacts on gene expression. Additionally, we highlight practical applications of algicidal compounds, taking into account their specificities and limitations. This review contributes to the protection of marine biodiversity and the promotion of sustainable environmental development. Furthermore, we provide recommendations for future research on algicidal compounds to overcome existing barriers. By doing so, we hope to offer valuable references for researchers engaged in further studies on managing algal outbreaks.

Abstract:Hazardous impacts caused by harmful algal blooms (HABs) have facilitated the development of novel effective approaches for controlling the frequent HABs. Recently, bacteria with algicidal effects, as a promising alternative tool for eliminating the HABs-forming species have received wide concerns. In the present study, a marine bacterial strain 6A1 with potent algicidal activity was successfully isolated from a bloom of Akashiwo sanguinea , and the characteristics related to its algicidal action were systematically investigated. Sequencing results of 16S rDNA suggested that this bacterium belongs to the genus Arenibacter in the family Flavobacteriaceae, while the phylogenetic analysis revealed that Arenibacter sp. strain 6A1 was the only algicidal bacterium in Arenibacter to date, according to the best of our knowledge. Arenibacter sp. strain 6A1 had an extraordinarily high algicidal performance when it was added to A. sanguinea culture with a volume fraction of 1.5% for 2 h. The algicidal performance of strain 6A1 was concentration-dependent and time-dependent. The best algicidal efficacy of strain 6A1 was seen during the stationary phase, while the resistance of A. sanguinea to strain 6A1 declined as the growth cycle progressed. Subsequently, the indirect algicidal mode of Arenibacter sp. strain 6A1 was verified and the algicidal compounds produced by strain 6A1 were proved to be heat-resistant. Further research showed that strain 6A1 caused a severe damage in photosynthesis, oxidative stress, and also damage in three HABs-forming algae to varying degrees. The greatest algicidal performance was found on unarmored dinoflagellate A. sanguinea , followed by raphidophyte Chattonella antiqua and armored dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense . The Arenibacter sp. strain 6A1 exhibited selective algicidal activity on a wide range of algal species, primarily targeting Pyrrophyta and Ochrophyta. The proposed bacteria (strain 6A1) can be a powerful and eco-friendly tool for emergency treatment of HABs caused by certain algal species in coastal water bodies.

Algicidal interaction between Paenibacillus polymyxa MEZ6 and microalgae

Abstract:Aims: Algicidal bacteria can be used for control of harmful algal bloom and extraction of algal bioproducts based on their algae-lysing activities. This work investigated the algae-lysing activity of a newly isolated algicidal bacterium, Paenibacillus polymyxa strain MEZ6 and its possible mechanisms. Methods and results: Algicidal bacteria were isolated from soil samples collected at the university campus. Co-inoculation tests identified that one isolate, MEZ6, can rapidly kill eukaryotic algae including Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Tribonema minus, Haematococcus pluvialis, and Chlorella ellipsoidea. The strain was determined as Paenibacillus polymyxa MEZ6 based on 16S rRNA gene sequence and genome comparisons. The algicidal activity was detected in both living cells and cell-free supernatant of spent culture medium, suggesting cell-cell contact is not required for algicidal activity. Strain MEZ6 was less active towards cyanobacterial strains compared to algae. Genomic sequence and comparative proteomic analyses were performed to explore the possible algicidal mechanisms of the strain. Differentially expressed protein analysis identified a number of proteins related to polysaccharides degradation and antimicrobial secondary metabolite biosynthesis that may be involved in the algicidal activity of MEZ6. Conclusion: Paenibacillus polymyxa MEZ6 is a newly discovered gram-positive algicidal bacterial strain with high lytic activity towards several algal species. Significance and impact of the study: Our study extends the understanding of the versatile characters of Paenibacillus polymyxa and sheds new insights into its application in algae biotechnology.
The potential use of bacterium strain R219 for controlling of the bloom-forming cyanobacteria in freshwater lake

Abstract:Cyanobacterial blooms become a serious environmental threat to the freshwater ecosystem, and several physical and chemical methods have been developed for controlling the blooms. In order to develop a biocontrol agent for controlling the blooms, we isolated a bacterial strain R219 that exhibited strong algicidal activity against the dominant bloom-forming species of Microcystis aeruginosa from Lake Tai in China. Based on 16S rDNA sequence analysis we determined the strain R219 to be Pseudomonas aeruginosa by the virtue of its sharing about 99.8% similarity with reference strains in the DNA databases. Biochemical and morphological tests were used to support the accurate identification as that of the bacterium P. aeruginosa . We also tested culture filtrate and ethyl acetate extract of strain R219 and showed both of them exhibited strong algicidal effect on the growth of M. aeruginosa at mid-exponential phase when the R219 filtrate and ethyl acetate extract were applied at various cell densities. Moreover, the P. aeruginosa filtrate showed high potency in removal of the mixed species bloom-forming cyanobacteria collected directly from the Lake Tai. When adding the filtrate of the strain R219 to the mixed-species cyanobacteria, the content of chlorophyll- a of the algae were reduced by as much as 80–90%. Oral acute toxicity assessment for strain R219 demonstrated that all the mice that received the broth or filtrate in doses of 0.5 or 2.0 g kg −1 were alive without any immediate behavioral changes within 14 days of administration of either broth or filtrate. These results indicate that the strain R219 may have potential for a use in controlling the bloom-forming cyanobacteria in freshwater ecosystems.
Microbial succession and enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes during algal-bacterial biofilm purification of aquaculture wastewater

Abstract:This study involved the establishment of algal-bacterial biofilms on the surface of carbon fiber-based artificial aquatic plants, utilizing algal-bacterial symbiosis for the purification of aquaculture wastewater. The algae-bacteria consortium exhibited strong photosynthetic activity, as indicated by the chlorophyll a + b content (0.918 ± 0.029 mg/g carbon fiber (CF)). Particularly, during the initial 7 days, algal-bacterial biofilm displayed robust water purification activity and capacity, with a significant reduction in total phosphorus (TP) of 39.44 % ± 2.43 % observed. The microbial community of the biofilm was diverse, primarily dominated by Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Actinomycetota, and Planctomycetota. Among these, Proteobacteria were in the highest abundance ranging from 39.18 % to 40.61 %. Changes in Cyanobacteria, driven by nutrient level alterations, not only impacted species abundance but also posed a risk of promoting the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Through the complex interactions among biological communities, 15 types of ARGs have been enriched on the algal-bacterial biofilm, among which Multidrug, Bacitracin, Aminoglycoside, and Glycopeptid have a higher abundance. Contigs and network analysis indicate that Nannocystis, Sphingorhabdus, and Polynucleobacter are the key hosts and it is found that their abundance will increase during the purification of water quality by the algal-bacterial biofilm. This study highlighted the risk of ARG transmission in aquaculture effluent treatment with algal-bacterial biofilms.

Abstract:Identifying potent bacterial algicidal agents is essential for the development of effective, safe, and economically viable algaecides. Challenges in isolating and purifying these substances from complex secretions have impeded progress in this field. Metabolomics profiling, an efficient strategy for identifying metabolites, was pioneered in identifying bacterial algicidal substances in this study. Extracellular secretions from different generations of the algicidal bacterium Brevibacillus sp. were isolated for comprehensive analysis. Specifically, a higher algicidal efficacy was observed in the secretion from Generation 3 (G3) of Brevibacillus sp. compared to Generation 1 (G1). Subsequent metabolomics profiling comparing G3 and 1 revealed 83 significantly up-regulated metabolites, of which 9 were identified as potential algicidal candidates. Back-validation highlighted the potency of 4-acetamidobutanoic acid (4-ABC) and 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQL), which exhibited robust algicidal activity with 3d-EC 50 values of 6.40 mg/L and 92.90 μg/L, respectively. These substances disrupted photosynthetic activity in M. aeruginosa by ceasing electron transfer in PSII, like the impact exerted by Brevibacillus sp. secretion. These findings confirmed that 4-ABC and 8-HQL were the main algicidal components derived from Brevibacillus sp.. Thus, this study presents a streamlined strategy for identifying bacterial algicidal substances and unveils two novel and highly active algicidal substances. Environmental Implication Harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) pose significant environmental problems and health effects to humans and other organisms. The increasing frequency of HCBs has emerged as a pressing global concern. Bacterial-derived algicidal substances are expected to serve as effective, safe, and economically viable algaecides against HCBs. This study presents a streamlined strategy for identifying bacterial algicidal substances and unveils two novel substances (4-ABC and 8-HQL). These two substances demonstrate remarkable algicidal activity and disrupt the photosynthetic system in M. aeruginosa . They hold potential as prospective algaecides for addressing HCBs.

Abstract:The use of algicidal bacteria has gained prominence as natural solution to control the worrying increase of harmful algal blooms worldwide. However, although cyanobacterial blooms (cyanoHABs) often dominate freshwater bodies, recent reviews on the subject have addressed cyanobacteria in the second place and focused more on bacteria-algae interactions. This article provides a critical review of the fundamental aspects of searching for, isolating and assaying candidate algicidal bacteria targeting cyanobacteria. Possible species-specific interactions and the different modes of action of bacteria against different species of cyanobacteria are also discussed. It has been observed that there is a clear bias in the literature toward the genus Microcystis, being by far the most studied and reviewed to date. This contrasts with the numerous studies showing cyanobacterial blooms dominated by other harmful species, such as the genera Planktothrix, Aphanizomenon or Raphidiopsis. To add new knowledge to the lack of current studies on these genera, a separate experimental section has been included in this review with research results on the sensitivity of nine harmful freshwater cyanobacteria and two green algae to different bacteria and algicidal compounds. Finally, certain ecological and biosafety risks that must be taken into account when applying algicidal bacteria as a bioaugmentation strategy are also highlighted. Overall, this review is presented as an attempt to outline the knowledge gathered over the last thirty years of research, while raising new questions and debates on key issues that remain poorly understood.

Wheat Bran Enhances The Cytotoxicity Of Immobilized Alcaligenes Aquatilis F8 Against Microcystis Aeruginosa

Abstract:Algicidal bacteria offer a promising option for killing cyanobacteria. Therefore, a new Alcaligenes aquatilis strain F8 was isolated to control Microcystis aeruginosa in this study. The algicidal activity of strain F8 was dependent on the cell density of M. aeruginosa, and the maximal algicidal rate of the free bacterium reached 88.45% within 72 h. With a view to its application to the control of M. aeruginosa in the natural environment, strain F8 was immobilized in sodium alginate beads, but immobilization of the strain decreased its algicidal rate compared to that of the free bacterium. However, addition of wheat bran to the sodium alginate matrix used to immobilize strain F8 not only eliminated the adverse effects of immobilization on the bacteria but also resulted in an 8.83% higher algicidal rate of the immobilized than free bacteria. Exclusion and recovery methods were used to identify key ingredients of wheat bran and gain insight into the mechanism underlying the observed enhancement of algicidal activity. This analysis indicated that certain factors in wheat bran, including vitamins B-1, B-2, B-9, and E were responsible for promoting bacterial growth and thereby improving the algicidal rate of immobilized strain F8. Our findings indicate that wheat bran is able to improve the algicidal efficiency of A. aquatilis strain F8 for killing M. aeruginosa and is a good source of not only carbon and nitrogen but also vitamins for bacteria.
