Abstract:Studies were conducted on the dynamic processes of hydrocarbon migration and accumulation in the west part of the northern margin of the Qaidam Basin, based on previous studies on basin evolution and hydrocarbon system. Based on the dynamics of petroleum accumulation, basin analysis and the numerical stimulation method were applied to reconstruct the basin evolution. Simulation analysis of petroleum accumulation in the main reservoir-forming stages were conducted in the light of source rock properties in different stages, fluid potential field and seepage property distribution of carrier beds. Controlling factors of reservoir formation in the northern margin of the Qaidam Basin were summarized. Studies showed that the Miocene is the main period of oil generation for the Jurassic source rocks in the studied area. The oil generation and migration volume were large. However, Saishiteng Sag was just on the slope in the northern part of Yiliping Sag. Structural traps were distributed at the margin of the basin. There was abundant oil migration to the north margin and a dissipation of the oil there during the later strong tectonic activities. During the late reservoir formation stage after the Pliocene, the source rocks generated mainly gas and not oil, and structural traps were well developed and provided good conditions for the natural gas reservoir formation. Deep structural traps in the basins were conducive to the formation of a large-scale low-permeability gas reservoir.
Deep Hydrocarbons in the Northwestern Junggar Basin (NW China): Geochemistry, Origin, and Implications for the Oil Vs. Gas Generation Potential of Post-Mature Saline Lacustrine Source Rocks

Abstract:Deep ( > 4500 m) sedimentary units in petroliferous basins are a frontier field for petroleum exploration and exploitation worldwide. This study focuses on the northwestern Junggar Basin of NW China and presents the results of a comprehensive geochemical analysis of the source rocks and hydrocarbons hosted by deep reservoirs in this region, including data obtained from Rock-Eval pyrolysis, carbon isotope, biomarker, and light hydrocarbon analyses. These data provide insights into the exploration potential of deep hydrocarbons in the study area and in other areas with similar geologic settings (i.e., saline lacustrine petroleum systems). Results indicate that the deep hydrocarbons in the northwestern Junggar Basin are dominated by oil, with both the oil and natural gas being derived mainly from the lower Permian Fengcheng Formation. This formation was deposited in a heterogeneous saline lacustrine environment, which led to the generation of geochemically diverse oil compositions. Consequently, Fengcheng-derived oils can be divided into subcategories based on source rock lithology; i.e., hypersaline alkaline muddy dolomites, saline (dolomitic) mudstones, and brackish mudstones. A small number of deep oils in the study area were derived from the Carboniferous-lower Permian Jiamuhe Formation. The deep hydrocarbons in the study area generally accumulated in near-source environments, indicating that prospective areas are present in the form of Fengcheng-derived oils in the depocenter of the Mahu sag, especially oils derived from hypersaline alkaline muddy dolomites and saline (dolomitic) mudstones. These source rocks are likely to have generated oil even under the highly mature conditions associated with deep burial. This might explain why discoveries within saline lacustrine basins are generally dominated by oil, implying that these conditions might also exist within the deeper parts of saline lacustrine basins worldwide.

Abstract:Lacustrine hydrocarbon source rocks with high quantity and quality of organic matter (OM) are developed within the third member of the Eocene Shahejie formation (Es3) in the Qikou Sag of the Huanghua Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, Eastern China. However, the paleolake environments associated with deposition of these rocks remain relatively undescribed, restricting our understanding of the biogeochemical processes which contributed to the development of excellent source rocks and inhibiting efforts for exploration of lacustrine hydrocarbon deposits. In this study, 18 core samples from the Es3 interval of Well Gangshen 4 in Qikou Sag were subject to a detailed analysis of bulk OM, biomarkers, molecular carbon isotopes, trace elements, and phosphorus (P) to investigate the environment and ecosystem of the ancient lake in which the rocks were deposited. High values of gammacerane index (av. 0.35) recorded in the samples reveals the oxic-anoxic stratification in the water column that persisted for the majority of the year due to the hot climate and great depth of the lake during this period. Meanwhile 13C-depleted hopanes (lower than −63.2‰) indicate an input of OM from chemoautotrophic and methanotrophic bacteria, supported by the production of CO2 and CH4 due to the anaerobic respiration of OM in the hypolimnion or sediments. The abundances of total organic carbon (TOC) relative to total P (TOC/P, mole ratio, av. 289.9) indicates the preferential release of P from sediments in an anoxic environment. However, the low (<2.0) Ni/Co and V/Cr ratios and moderate (av. 1.48) pristane/phytane (Pr/Ph) ratios suggest periodic oxidation of the hypolimnion, which may be a result of replenishment of oxygen during the short-term mixing of the water column driven by seasonal cooling and wind disturbance. Excess P was introduced into the epilimnion via mixing, which initiated high algal productivity after further stratification of the water column. Algal OM produced in this early stratification phase was crucial for the formation of excellent source rocks. The large variation of δ13C in TOC, n-alkanes, and isoprenoids reflects changes in CO2 concentrations or carbon isotopes in the photic zone, which may be attributable to increased inputs of terrestrial OM in response to a changing climate.

Abstract:Energy Exploration &Exploitation, Ahead of Print. The hydrocarbon potential of the Bodong Sag remains unclear. Investigation and comprehensive evaluation of Paleogene lacustrine source rocks is essential to determine the exploration potential and direction. This study examined the Paleogene source rocks using organic geochemical methods, including total organic carbon (TOC), Rock-Eval pyrolysis, maceral composition, vitrinite reflectance (Ro), and kinetic analysis. For the first time in this study area, a three-dimensional (3D) kinetics-based petroleum system modeling approach was employed to reconstruct the burial history, thermal maturity, and hydrocarbon generation history of the source rocks. The resource mass was evaluated based on the calculated generation mass. Results indicate that the third member (E2s3) and first member (E3s1) of the Shahejie Formation are mainly Type II1 organic matter, exhibiting high generation potential. The third member of the Dongying Formation (E3d3) contains mixed Type II1 and II2 organic matter, with moderate potential. The E2s3 and E3s1 source rocks matured early, entering the oil window in the Early Oligocene (∼30.3 Ma) and Middle Oligocene (∼28 Ma), respectively, and are currently in the wet gas to dry gas stage. The E3d3 source rocks matured later, entering the oil window at the end of the Oligocene (∼24.6 Ma) and are currently in the late oil to the wet gas stage. Subsidence and burial have resulted in higher maturity in the southern subsag compared to the northern subsag, with the margins remaining in low maturity to immature stages. Resource estimates for the Bodong Sag source rocks are quantified at 8.33 × 108 t of oil and 1.68 × 1011 m3 of gas. E2s3, E3s1, and E3d3 contribute 41.62%, 33.95%, and 24.43% respectively, with E2s3 source rocks being the major contributor. The southern subsag, accounting for 76.92%, is the primary hydrocarbon generation kitchen. The significant increase in natural gas resources highlights the prospects for natural gas exploration in the Bodong area.

Abstract:Recently, significant oil discoveries have been made in the shallower pay zones of the Jurassic Badaowan Formation (J 1 b ) in the Mahu Sag, Junggar Basin, Northwest China. However, little work has been done on the geochemical characteristics and origins of the oil in the J 1 b reservoir. This study analyzes 44 oil and 14 source rock samples from the area in order to reveal their organic geochemical characteristics and the origins of the oils. The J 1 b oils are characterized by a low Pr/Ph ratio and high β-carotene and gammacerane indices, which indicate that they were mainly generated from source rocks deposited in a hypersaline environment. The oils are also extremely enhanced in C 29 regular steranes, possibly derived from halophilic algae. Oil-source correlation shows that the oils were derived from the Lower Permian Fengcheng Formation (P 1 f ) source rocks, which were deposited in a strongly stratified and highly saline water column with a predominance of algal/bacterial input in the organic matter. The source rocks of the Middle Permian lower-Wuerhe Formation (P 2 w ), which were deposited in fresh to slightly saline water conditions with a greater input of terrigenous organic matter, make only a minor contribution to the J 1 b oils. The reconstruction of the oil accumulation process shows that the J 1 b oil reservoir may have been twice charged during Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous and the Paleogene–Neogene, respectively. A large amount volume of hydrocarbons generated in the P 1 f source rock and leaked from T 1 b oil reservoirs migrated along faults connecting source beds and shallow-buried secondary faults into Jurassic traps, resulting in large-scale accumulations in J 1 b . These results are crucial for understanding the petroleum system of the Mahu Sag and will provide valuable guidance for petroleum exploration in the shallower formations in the slope area of the sag.

Abstract:Alkaline lacustrine deposits are known for their high primary productivity, unique aquatic environments, and sedimentary patterns, which are conducive to the formation and preservation of organic matter. Consequently, related source rocks have significant hydrocarbon generation potential. The study of hydrocarbon source rocks in the Fengcheng Formation of the Mahu Sag in the Junggar Basin serves as a good example for understanding organic matter enrichment and hydrocarbon generation characteristics of such alkaline lacustrine deposits source rocks. However, the characteristics of organic matter and hydrocarbon generation model in the source rocks of Fengcheng Formation lack systematic research, thus hindering exploration planning and favorable area selection. In this study, analysis of mineral content based on X-ray diffraction and organic geochemical analysis were employed, along with systematic observations of bio-precursor types under fluorescence microscopy. Based on mineral identification and quantitative statistics, the Fengcheng Formation was classified into three zones according to different alkaline mineral assemblages: an inner zone dominated by sodium carbonate minerals, a transitional zone with higher borosilicate mineral content, and a marginal zone characterized by abundant calcite deposition. The inner zone is characterized by the presence of lamalginite and telalginite, which are influenced by high pH values and changes in water depth, and exhibit high maturity characteristics. The transitional zone exhibits high total organic carbon (TOC) values, with predominantly type I and type II1 kerogen. Under fluorescence, the main components were observed to be lamalginite and telalginite, with their distribution being influenced by high salinity and ash supply. The marginal zone has relatively lower TOC than the previous two zones, which is dominated by type II2 kerogens, and contains a certain quantity of terrigenous inertinite supply. The hydrocarbon generation patterns of lamalginite and telalginite are consistent with the bimodal efficient hydrocarbon generation model observed in the source rocks of Fengcheng Formation, revealing the unique hydrocarbon generation model of organic matter in alkaline lacustrine source rocks. This research has significant implications for the exploration strategy of the alkaline lacustrine deposits in the Fengcheng Formation and similar oil- and gas-bearing basins.

Abstract:Basins containing Paleogene organic-rich shales formed in a saline lacustrine environment are widespread in eastern China, and they provide sources of hydrocarbons in numerous petroleum fields. However, research on these basins has been patchy, which limits our understanding of the hydrocarbon source rocks. To address this problem, we selected the relatively understudied Nanxiang Basin as the study area and, more specifically, the third member of the Paleogene Hetaoyuan Formation (Eh(3)), which is the main hydrocarbon-generating layer in the Biyang Sag of this basin. In this paper, we report on the organic petrology and geochemistry of Eh(3), and further analyze both its conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon potential. Our results show that the organic matter (OM) within the shales of Eh(3) had bioprecursors that were mainly phytoplankton, bacteria, and benthic algae, with relatively small contributions from animal and higher plant materials. The shales have an average OM abundance (total organic carbon, or TOC) of 2.96 wt%, thus meeting the criterion of a good-quality source rock. Their organic-matter is mainly type I to type II, and in terms of thermal maturity they range from low maturity to mature, thus displaying the characteristics required to generate oil. The results of our molecular geochemical analyses show that the sediments of Eh(3) in the Biyang Sag belong predominantly to deep or semi-deep lake facies, and they were deposited in a reducing environment and may have been affected by a marine incursion. The evidence for this includes Pr/Ph values of < 1.0, samples falling in the marine and salt lacustrine regions on the Pr/nC(17)-Ph/nC(18) diagram and values of C-26/C-25 for the tricyclic terpanes that are < 1.3, thereby indicating the influence of sea water. Eh(3) in the Biyang Sag has good potential to be a conventional and unconventional petroleum resource, particularly at the depocenter of the sag. Vertically, the third submember of Eh(3) (Eh(3)(3)) is proven to be the most favorable conventional petroleum resource, whereas the second submember (Eh(3)(2)) is the most favorable unconventional petroleum resource. Therefore, the saline lacustrine sequences are good for both conventional and unconventional petroleum resources.
Geochemical Characteristics and Source Rock Age Identification of Crude Oils in the Qaidam Basin, Northwest China

Abstract:Based on the systematic analyses of light hydrocarbon, saturated and aromatic fractions of over 60 oil samples collected from oil fields in the northern and western Qaidam basin, the geochemical characteristics of the oils in the two regions were studied. Based on the calibrating of analytical data of source rocks, identification parameters on age-specific biomarkers for oil source rock age were put forward. The research results show that the oils in northern margin have K 1 (Mango's light hydrocarbon parameter) values of around 1.1, abundant methylcyclohexane and toluene, odd over even n-alkane preference, high Pr/Ph ratios, reflecting the feature of organic matter deposited in Jurassic freshwater lacustrine facies. Whereas, the oils in the western region arc characterized by K 1 values of almost over 1.2, high abundance of isoalkanes in light hydrocarbons, bimodal n-alkane distribution with odd-to-even (C 11∼C 17) and even-to-odd (C 18∼C 28) predominance, low Pr/Ph, high relative concentration (>30%) Of C 28 sterane, abundant alkyl-chromans (MTTC) with 5, 7, 8-trimethyl-/8-methyl-MTTC ratios<10, indicating the signature of Tertiary saline lacustrine organic matter. Oleanane and norcholestane are believed to be useful age-specific biomarkers for differentiating the oils derived from Jurassic and Tertiary source rocks. Tertiary oils are confirmed by the appearance of oleanane and high 24-/24-+27-norcholestane ratios>0.6. Jurassic oils lack oleanane and have low 24-/24-+27- norcholestane ratios (<0. 25).

Abstract:Based on the geological and geochemical analysis of potential source rocks in different formations and the classification of crude oil types, combined with the hydrocarbon generation thermal simulation experiments, the source, genesis, and distribution of different types of oils in the Mahu large oil province of the Junggar Basin are investigated. Four sets of potential source rocks are developed in the Mahu Sag. Specifically, the source rocks of the Permian Fengcheng Formation have the highest hydrocarbon generation potential and contain mainly Types II and I organic matters, with a high oil generation capacity. In contrast, the source rocks in other formations exhibit lower hydrocarbon generation potential and contain mainly Type III organic matter, with dominant gas generation. Oils in the Mahu Sag can be classified as three types: A, B and C, which display ascending, mountainous and descending C 20 -C 21 -C 23 tricyclic terpenes abundance patterns in sequence, and gradually increasing relative content of tricyclic terpenes and sterane isomerization parameters, indicating an increasing oil maturity. Different types of oils are distributed spatially in an obviously orderly manner: Type A oil is close to the edge of the sag, Type C oil is concentrated in the center of the sag, and Type B oil lies in the slope area between Type A and Type C. The results of oil-source correlation and thermal simulation experiments show that the three types of oils come from the source rocks of the Fengcheng Formation at different thermal evolution stages. This new understanding of the differential genesis of oils in the Mahu Sag reasonably explains the source, distribution, and genetic mechanism of the three types of oils. The study results are of important guidance for the comprehensive and three-dimensional oil exploration, the identification of oil distribution in the total petroleum system, and the prediction of favorable exploration areas in the Mahu Sag.

Revealing Continuous Hydrocarbon Generation and Shale Oil Accumulation of Saline Lacustrine Source Rocks by Sequential Extraction

Abstract:Saline lacustrine fine-grained rocks are important hydrocarbon source rocks and host large shale oil accumulations worldwide. However, the specific process and mechanism of hydrocarbon generation and accumulation in such rocks are not clear. Sequential extraction is a method to chemically separate different hydrocarbon fractions in sedimentary rocks, commonly as free, adsorbed and retained hydrocarbons, and thus can theoretically record the entire process of hydrocarbon generation and accumulation. To test this hypothesis, here sequential extraction was carried out on source rock samples with varying maturities from the alkaline lacustrine strata of the Lower Permian Fengcheng Formation, Mahu Sag, Junggar Basin, northwest China. The 17 & beta;-ethylandrostane/ C29-sterane & alpha;& alpha;& alpha;20R and tricyclic terpane/pentacyclic triterpane ratios vary with maturity. In contrast, some biomarker parameters are not significantly affected by thermal maturity, including pristane/phytane, & beta;-carotane index (& beta;-carotane/main peak n-alkane), sterane/hopane, 7-+8-methyl index (7-+8-monomethyl heptadecane/ main peak n-alkane), and C28/C29 regular sterane values, and can thus be used for oil-source rock correlations. The low-maturity source rocks have undergone one stage of hydrocarbon generation and associated shale oil accumulation, whereas source rocks with relatively high maturity have experienced multi-stage hydrocarbon generation and associated shale oil accumulation. In the early stages, cyanobacteria were the main bioprecursor to hydrocarbons and, with increasing maturity, Dunaliella gradually became the more important bioprecursor. Hydrocarbon generation by these alkaline lacustrine source rocks involved multiple sources and stages, which accounts for the abundant shale oil resources in the Mahu Sag with one-billion-ton reserves. This might be general for saline lacustrine source rocks worldwide, which can generate both conventional and unconventional hydrocarbons in large scales. Compared with conventional thermal modeling to constrain the generation history of hydrocarbon source rocks, a unique advantage of sequential extraction is its ability to characterize the entire history of hydrocarbon generation under geological conditions.
Cretaceous and Paleogene Saline Lacustrine Source Rocks Discovered in the Southern Junggar Basin, NW China

Abstract:Saline lacustrine source rocks in China provide the resource basis for many giant oil fields. Here, we report the first discovery of such source rocks in the piedmont area of the northern Tianshan Mountains in the southern Junggar Basin of NW China. These source rocks are Cretaceous and Paleogene in age. Organic geochemistry and trace-element data suggest that these mudstones were formed in a brackish-saline lacustrine environment, characterized by deep-water and reducing conditions, and in a warm and dry paleoclimate. Evidence for this environment includes mudstone Pr/Ph values of < 1.0, high gammacerane index ratios of > 0.4, and negative Ce and Eu anomalies. The total organic carbon (TOC) contents of these Cretaceous and Paleogene mudstones are typically > 0.5%, with maximum values of 1.45% and 2.22%, respectively, signifying moderate to high organic matter abundance. Rock-Eval and kerogen analyses suggest that the organic matter was dominated by type II kerogen. The mudstones are generally thermally mature, suggesting favorable conditions for hydrocarbon (particularly oil) generation. Oil-source correlation confirms the oil generation of these two sets of source rocks, whose development are controlled mainly by reducing environments. These Cretaceous and Paleogene mudstones should therefore be a target for regional exploration in the southern Junggar Basin in addition to the known gas-producing Jurassic rocks. This oil-bearing potential is unique amongst the Early Cretaceous-and Eocene-Oligocene central Asian petroliferous basins, as the eastern portion of this realm is considered to host predominantly Jurassic coal-based source rocks, giving rise to numerous large gas fields rather than oil resources.

Abstract:The geochemical analysis and experimental simulation are comprehensively used to systematically study the hydrocarbon generation material, organic matter enrichment and hydrocarbon generation model of Paleogene source rock in the Western Qaidam Depression, Qaidam Basin, NW China. Three main factors result in low TOC values of saline lacustrine source rock of the Qaidam Basin: relatively poor nutrient supply inhibits the algal bloom, too fast deposition rate causes the dilution of organic matter, and high organic matter conversion efficiency causes the low residual organic carbon. For this type of hydrogen-rich organic matter, due to the reduction of organic carbon during hydrocarbon generation, TOC needs to be restored based on maturity before evaluating organic matter abundance. The hydrocarbon generation of saline lacustrine source rocks of the Qaidam Basin is from two parts: soluble organic matter and insoluble organic matter. The soluble organic matter is inherited from organisms and preserved in saline lacustrine basins. It generates hydrocarbons during low-maturity stage, and the formed hydrocarbons are rich in complex compounds such as NOS, and undergo secondary cracking to form light components in the later stage; the hydrocarbon generation model of insoluble organic matter conforms to the traditional "Tissot" model, with an oil generation peak corresponding to R o of 1.0%.

Abstract:Saline lake basins are important Cainozoic petroliferous basins in China. There are significant differences in the palaeoenvironments of these basins. Different biological assemblages resulted in varying hydrocarbon generation characteristics and potential. Therefore, the bio-environmental interactions are key to understanding the oil generation from terrestrial organic matter. In this study, we investigated the organic petrology and geochemistry of the Palaeogene Shahejie Formation in the Dongpu Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China. The depositional palaeoenvironment varied from saline to freshwater. Cyanobacteria and coccolithophores were deposited in the saline environment, and green algae and higher plant debris were deposited in the freshwater to brackish water environments. The algal biomass in the sediments increased with salinity. Thermal and pyrolysis experiments revealed differences in the hydrocarbon generation potential of the source rocks deposited in different sedimentary environments. The source rocks deposited in the saline water environment have a high hydrocarbon generation potential. Two immature to low-mature oil generation peaks were observed, which are mainly due to the pyrolysis of coccolithophores, cyanobacteria, and dinoflagellates. Only one oil generation peak was observed for source rocks deposited in the freshwater environment, which is mainly due to the pyrolysis of dinoflagellates and green algae. The hydrocarbon generation potential and two stages of oil generation of the source rocks deposited in the saline environment may be due to the type of hydrocarbon-generating organisms and the catalytic effect of the high-salinity diagenetic environment. The results show that the sedimentary environment of saline lake basins affects the hydrocarbon-generating organisms and hydrocarbon generation process.

Abstract:Lacustrine sedimentary formations potentially contain hydrocarbons. The lacustrine sedimentary rocks of the Ziliujung and Xintiangou Formations have been investigated for their hydrocarbon potential using low-pressure nitrogen adsorption (LP-N2A), low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), total organic carbon (TOC), rock-eval pyrolysis (Rock-Eval), gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results show that the normalized difference of the pore parameters between the two formations is less than 10%, and the pores are mainly slit-like mesopores with high porosity. Macropores and micropores are often developed in the quartz skeleton, while mesopores often occur among organic matter, clay minerals, carbonate minerals, and pyrite particles. The organic matter abundance of the Ziliujing Formation is relatively high. Additionally, the organic matter types of the two formations are mainly type II and type III, and the sources of the organic matter are plankton and bacteria which have reached the mature gas production stage. The palaeoenvironmental differences between the depositional periods of the two formations lie within 10% of each other. The warm and humid climate promotes the development of quartz minerals to further enhance the proportion of both micropores and macropores, and the clay minerals, carbonate minerals, and pyrite carried in the terrigenous detritus are closely associated with the total organic carbon (TOC), which promotes the development of mesopores to enhance the porosity. The reservoir, organic matter, and palaeoenvironmental characteristics of fine-grained sedimentary rocks in the two formations are similar, and both of them have good potential for development. The above results provide a basic geological theoretical basis for unconventional oil and gas exploration in the northeastern margin of the Sichuan Basin.

Abstract:During the deposition of the Chang 7 Member of the Yanchang Formation, pronounced lake invasion occurred, resulting in the formation of the largest lake in the Ordos Basin. This change has caused ambiguity in the source rock characteristics among the different sedimentary environments represented, thereby restricting the exploration of oil–source correlations and hydrocarbon migration pathways corresponding to oil and gas in this formation. In this study, we comprehensively assessed the characteristics of source rocks from different sedimentary environments and selected effective biomarker parameters to allow for a detailed exploration of oil formation and hydrocarbon migration. The source rock biomarkers differed notably among the different sedimentary environment, with source rocks from semi-deep to deep lakes having high ratios of pristane to phytane and ∑C21-/∑C22+ n-alkanes, relatively high C27 regular sterane contents, and low (C19+C20)/C21 and C30-rearranged hopane contents. Source rocks from these facies developed in reductive environments and had high V/Cr, Ni/Co, V/(V+Ni), and U/Th values, while those from the delta facies developed in a semi-oxidative to oxidative environment and thus showed the opposite characteristics. The Chang 6 tight oil in the Dingbian-Wuqi area primarily migrated vertically near its source; the western block originated from semi-deep to deep lake source rocks, while the eastern block formed from delta front source rocks. These findings should guide future research in this reservoir, especially with respect to high-resolution oil–source correlations across different sedimentary environments.

Abstract:The organic geochemical traits of Carboniferous to Permian hydrocarbon source rocks (SRs) from the Mahu Sag, Junggar basin, have been investigated in terms of thermal maturity (TM), hydrocarbon potential (HP), organic matter (OM) source input and paleoenvironment. A total of forty-seven (47) core samples from five (5) wells have been surveyed through standard organic geochemical approaches, including the total organic carbon (TOC) and the rock pyrolysis (RP) measurement. Fifteen (15) of the samples were bitumen extraction and fractionation, and their aliphatic hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons were carried out for the gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The results indicate that the studied samples came from the C and the P1f are the moderate or good SRs, but samples from the P2w and P1j are not good enough, most of them are poor or moderate SRs. The TM was indicated by the temperature of maximum pyrolysis yield (Tmax), the Carbon Preference Index (CPI) and Odd to Even Preference (OEP) values, the C30 M/H versus Tm/Ts, the C29 ββ/(ββ+αα) versus C29 20S/(20S + 20R), and the alkyl naphthalene ratios. Result shows that almost all the samples from the P1f are in the mature stage at present; some samples of P1j and C are in the premature or mature stage, others are completely immature; all P2w samples are in the immature stage at present. The OM source was indicated by the n-Alkane distribution, the relative quantity of C27–C28–C29 steranes, the (C19+C20)/C23 tricyclic terpane (TT), and the Terrigenous/aquatic ratio (TAR). The deposition environment was inferred by the pristane/phytane (Pr/Ph), the Gammacerane index, and the relative quantity of fluorene compounds (Fls), dibenzothiophen compounds (DBTs) and dibenzofuran compounds (DBFs). Result shows that the mainly OM source of the P2w, P1f, P1j, and C were the saline lacustrine algal, but some samples of the P1j were mixed with the higher plants; most samples deposited in the strong reduction environment except the samples came from the P2w and some samples came from the P1j. Considering the OMs' content, type, origination, deposited paleo-environment and TM, the SRs of the P1f are considered the best sources rocks with the best conditions of the oil and gas generation.

Abstract:After several years of extensive exploration, a series of oil and gas reservoirs or structures have been discovered in the Dongdaohaizi sag, situated in the hinterland of the Junggar Basin. However, in recent years, some wells around the sag have failed. Herein, sedimentary facies, the plane distribution of dark mudstone, geochemical characteristics of source rocks, and the control of sedimentary facies on the distribution and development of source rocks in the Permian Pingdiquan Formation in the Dongdaohaizi sag were systematically investigated. A combined geological and geochemical method was used to fully understand the distribution law and resource potential of the source rocks in this area. Investigation results indicate that the Pingdiquan Formation primarily inherited continuous deposition, and the sedimentary facies of the sag, such as semideep lake, shore-shallow lake, prefan delta, fan delta front, and fan delta plain, were developed from the center sag to the outside. The fan delta facies, predominantly distributed in the northern margin of the sag, are characterized by lithology mainly composed of sandy conglomerate and coarse sandstone. The sandstone has a coarse particle size and poor sorting ability, while lacustrine mudstone is widely developed in the sag with a large sedimentary thickness, which is the primary source rock of the Dongdaohaizi sag. The source rocks in the Pingdiquan Formation exhibit medium-to-good quality. The organic matter is categorized as types II1-III, and the thermal evolution maturity is in the mature-high mature stage, indicating a high resource potential. The development of the source rock in the Dongdaohaizi sag is closely related to the sedimentary environment. The sedimentation rate of fan delta facies is high and burial is fast, bringing a large amount of terrestrial organic matter to the lake, thereby increasing the nutrition and organic matter quantity of the lake. Due to the stable water of the lake, low energy at the bottom, and medium conditions of strong reduction, a large amount of organic matter accumulated in the deep to semideep lake facies of the study area, resulting in the development of thick dark mudstone with a thickness of over 400 m. The abundance of organic matter has reached a good level, and the maturity and content of organic matter are high, signifying a high hydrocarbon-generation potential.

Abstract:Source rocks in lacustrine rifting basins have great heterogeneity, which leads to imprecise assessments of hydrocarbon resources. Previous studies evaluated the source rocks of different sedimentary environments in lacustrine basins or depressions using the same lower limit of effective source rocks (i.e., the minimum total organic carbon (TOC) at which the source rocks are capable of expelling hydrocarbons). In this study, the source rock samples were selected from five formations in the Dongpu Depression for organic geochemical experiments and quantitative simulations of hydrocarbon expulsion. According to salinity differences, every formation was divided into a saline area, transition area and freshwater area. The results show that the maximum thickness of source rocks developed in the saline and transition areas is 700 m. Additionally, source rocks with a higher TOC and oil-prone organic matter types (II1 and II2) also develop in the saline and transition areas, and most have entered the mature stage. The TOC values corresponding to the lower limit of effective source rocks in the saline, transition, and freshwater areas are 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5%, respectively. Furthermore, the hydrocarbon expulsion ratio (amount of hydrocarbon discharged per unit of TOC from the source rocks) for the freshwater area is 253.1 mg/g, while the ratios in the saline and transition areas are relatively higher at 439.4 mg/g and 369.3 mg/g, respectively. The hydrocarbon expulsion rate (change in the expulsion ratio per unit thermal evolution degree) and hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency (ratio of cumulative hydrocarbon expulsion amount to generation amount) in the saline, transition and freshwater areas present maxima when the Ro (vitrinite reflectance) values are 0.95%, 0.85% and 0.82%, respectively. The hydrocarbon expulsion quantities in the saline, transition and freshwater areas account for 24%, 49% and 27% of the total, respectively. Therefore, the main hydrocarbon expulsion area is the transition area of the Dongpu Depression associated with the thickest source rocks. Es3M and Es3L source rocks in the transition area with high organic matter abundant and type II kerogen are more promising than the other formations. This study is the first to report on effective source rocks in different sedimentary environments in lacustrine basins and can provide guidance for future exploration in the Dongpu Depression and a reference for future research on source rocks in other lacustrine basins.

Abstract:The comprehensive geochemical evaluation concludes that the favourable supply of lower organisms and stable clay‐rich depositional environment in the E3d3 interval of the Dongying Formation are potential explanations for the formation of lacustrine source rocks with high organic matter abundance, intermediate thermal evolution and excellent hydrocarbon generation potential and could have good prospects for the exploration and development of hydrocarbons. The unclear understanding of the source rock characteristics for the Paleogene Dongying Formation in the Bozhong Sag leads to the lack of cognition in oil and gas exploration. This research systematically evaluated the discrepancy in geochemical characteristics of source rock intervals in the Dongying Formation based on detailed analysis using Rock‐Eval pyrolysis, total organic carbon (TOC), vitrinite reflectance (Ro), maceral components, stable carbon isotopes and biomarker parameters. It discusses the organic matter sources, depositional environment, thermal maturity and hydrocarbon generation potential in the source rock intervals of the Dongying Formation. The organic matter abundance in the third member (E3d3) and lower sub‐member of the second member (E3d2L) of the Dongying Formation is higher, with an average TOC of 2.08% and 1.03%, respectively, indicating that these source rock intervals could have good and excellent quality. The source rocks of the Dongying Formation predominately contain exinite maceral group and type II1 and II2 kerogen. The thermal evolution is mainly in the low‐mature and mature stages. The organic matter sources in the Dongying Formation are mainly dominated by mixed origin (the carbon isotope reversal of aromatics also provides a potential explanation). However, the values of 1,2,5−/1,3,6‐trimethylnaphthalene, (1,2,5,6 + 1,2,3,5)‐tetramethylnaphthalene/tetramethylnaphthalenes, methyldibenzofuran/methylphenanthrene (MDBF/MP) and dibenzofuran/phenanthrene (DBF/PHEN) parameters in the E3d3 and some samples in E3d2L decipher relatively smaller values than other source rock intervals, proving the enhancement of the contribution of lower organisms. Moreover, the terrestrial input in the bottom‐up deposition process of the Dongying Formation gradually increases. The depositional environment reveals the Dongying Formation source rocks mainly developed freshwater sulphur‐poor lacustrine facies and shallow lake‐fluvial delta facies in an open clay‐rich sedimentary environment with poor water column stratification, belonging to the typical weak oxidation–reduction depositional conditions. The comprehensive geochemical evaluation concludes that the favourable supply of lower organisms and stable clay‐rich depositional environment in the E3d3 interval of the Dongying Formation are potential explanations for the formation of lacustrine source rocks with high organic matter abundance, intermediate thermal evolution and excellent hydrocarbon generation potential, providing a good foundation for the exploration and development prospects of hydrocarbons.

Abstract:The Heshui area within the Ordos Basin holds significant strategic importance for the extraction and development of tight oil resources in the Changqing Oilfield. This study extensively explored the geochemical features and distribution tendencies of source rocks in the Chang 7 member, utilizing core samples and logging data for a comprehensive analysis. A more advanced model was utilized to predict the dispersion of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) in the Chang 7 member source rock. The properties and hydrocarbon generation potential of source rocks were thoroughly assessed through a comprehensive analysis that involved evaluating their total organic carbon content, pyrolysis parameters, and reflectance (Ro) values. The research concluded that the source rocks boast substantial organic matter, predominantly categorized as type II-I organic material. The thermal maturation levels span from low maturity to maturity, signifying significant potential for oil generation. Generally, the source rock quality falls within the range of good to excellent. Sedimentary patterns notably influence the distribution of hydrocarbon-source rocks. The northeastern sector of the study area is situated in an area characterized by deep to semi-deep lake sedimentation, making it the primary location for the presence of Chang 7 member hydrocarbon source rocks. With a thickness ranging from 40 to 70 m, this zone becomes a pivotal focus for the potential exploration of tight oil resources in the future. The results of this study offer crucial insights for understanding the geochemical characteristics of hydrocarbon source rocks, evaluating their potential for hydrocarbon generation, and forecasting favorable zones for oil and gas exploration in similar regions.
