Abstract:Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow-cover maps have been available since September 13, 2000. These products, at 500-m spatial resolution, are available through the National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center in Boulder, Colorado. By the 2001-02 winter, 5-km climate-modeling grid (CMG) products will be available for presentation of global views of snow cover and for use in climate models. All MODIS snow-cover products are produced from automated algorithms that map snow in an objective manner. In this paper, we describe the MODIS snow products, and show snow maps from the fall of 2000 in North America.
Wide-field choroidal thickness profile in healthy eyes

Abstract:AbstractThe introduction of wide field optical coherence tomography (WF-OCT) has provided newer insights in the imaging of peripheral choroid. We evaluated choroidal thickness (CT) and large choroidal vessel thickness (LCVT) of 20 eyes in horizontal and vertical meridians using WF-OCT. A high-definition line scan through the fovea in both horizontal and vertical meridian was captured in primary and extremes of gaze to obtain scans up to mid-equator. CT and LCVT measurements were done across predefined points in macular area and all quadrants. LCVT was calculated after identifying a large choroidal vessel near choroidoscleral interface. The main outcome measures were differences in CT and LCVT in macular and four quadrants. Mean CT (331.23 ± 76.34 µ) and LCVT (201.46 ± 54.31 µ) in vertical macular segment were significantly more than CT (245.79 ± 55.38 µ; p = 0.0002) and LCVT (150.48 ± 52.58 µ; p = 0.004) in horizontal macular segment. CT at peripheral points in all quadrants was significantly reduced as compared to subfoveal CT (all p values < 0.05) with maximum reduction in inferior quadrant (64.5%). Using linear regression, only quadrant had a significant effect on CT and LCVT (both p < 0.001). CT and LCVT are highest at the macular area with reduction towards the periphery. The contribution of LCVT to CT is less at the fovea compared to other peripheral points.

Choroidal vascularity index and choriocapillary changes in retinal vein occlusions

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the changes in the choroidal structure in the setting of retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Methods: Changes in the structure of the choroid were studied in sixty-four eyes with unilateral central or branch RVO using optical coherence tomography (OCT) with enhanced depth imaging and OCT-angiography (OCT-A). Choroidal vascularity index (CVI), Haller layer/choroidal thickness (H/C) ratio, and choriocapillaris flow density were used to compare the structural characteristics of the choroid with fellow eyes and the eyes of thirty-four age-, gender-, and systemic co-morbidity-matched controls. Results: Eyes with RVO had a higher H/C ratio but a lower choriocapillaris flow density compared to both fellow and control eyes (p < 0.001). CVI was significantly lower in both eyes of the patients with RVO compared with control eyes (p < 0.05) with a more robust decrease in the eye that had developed RVO (p < 0.001). The H/C ratio (r = 0.303 p < 0.001), CVI (r = - 0.268, p = 0.001), and choriocapillaris flow density (r = - 0.237, p = 0.003) were all correlated with logMAR visual acuity, and other clinical features. Conclusion: Retinal vein occlusions alter the hemodynamic properties of the choroid leading to structural changes. These changes may be secondary to a compensatory mechanism to supply oxygen to hypoxic retina.
Longitudinal Assessment of the Choroidal Vascularity Index in Eyes with Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion-Associated Cystoid Macular Edema

Abstract:IntroductionCystoid macular edema (CME) is the most common cause of central vision loss in eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO eyes). In recent literature, choroidal vascularity index (CVI) has been proposed to be an enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) metric that may help characterize choroidal vascular changes in the setting of retinal ischemia, and potentially prognose visual outcomes and treatment patterns for patients with BRVO-related CME. This study sought to further characterize choroidal vascular changes in BRVO by comparing the CVI, subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and central subfield thickness (CST) in BRVO eyes with CME compared to unaffected fellow eyes.MethodsThis was a retrospective cohort study. Subjects included treatment-naïve BRVO eyes with CME diagnosed within 3 months of onset of symptoms and unaffected fellow eyes. EDI-OCT images were collected at baseline and at the 12-month follow-up visit. CVI, SFCT, and CST were measured. Demographics, treatment patterns, and best-corrected visual acuity (VA) were abstracted. Median CVI, SFCT, CST, and VA were compared between the two cohorts. Longitudinal relationships between these variables were analyzed.ResultsA total of 52 treatment-naïve eyes with BRVO and CME and 48 unaffected fellow eyes were identified. Baseline CVI was lower in eyes with BRVO than in fellow eyes (64.7% vs. 66.4%, P = 0.003). At 12 months, there was no difference in CVI between BRVO eyes and fellow eyes (65.7% vs 65.8%, P = 0.536). In BRVO eyes, there was a strong correlation between reduced CST and improved VA over the 12-month study period (r = 0.671, P < 0.001).ConclusionThere are differences in CVI in treatment-naïve BRVO eyes with CME at presentation compared to fellow eyes, but these differences resolve over time. Anatomic changes in macular thickness in BRVO eyes with CME may be correlated with VA outcomes.

Abstract:Aims Studying the relationship between retinal vessel diameter (RVD) with (1) macular thickness and volume, (2) retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL), (3) ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) and (4) optic nerve head (ONH) in a population cohort of middle-aged Caucasians. Methods We collected data from 3070 individuals. We used a semiautomated computer-assisted programme to measure central retinal arteriolar equivalent and central retinal venular equivalent. Macular and ONH parameters were assessed by optical coherence tomography. Results Data from 2155 persons were analysed. A larger RVD was associated with a thicker macula and increased macular volume; each SD increase in average macular thickness and volume was associated with a 3.28 μm and a 3.19 μm increase in arteriolar diameter and a 5.10 μm and a 5.08 μm increase in venular diameter, respectively (p<0.001 for all). A larger rim area, greater GC-IPL and RNFL thicknesses were associated with larger RVD; each SD increase in rim area, GC-IPL thickness and RNFL thickness was associated with a 1.21 μm, 2.68 μm and a 3.29 μm increase in arteriolar diameter and a 2.13 μm, 4.02 μm and 5.04 μm increase in venular diameter, respectively (p<0.001 for all). Conclusions Increased macular thickness, macular volume, GC-IPL thickness, RNFL thickness and optic nerve rim area were associated with larger RVDs in all subjects. This study clarified the anatomical correlations between both macular and ONH parameters with RVD for middle-aged Caucasians; these can represent a basis for further studies investigating the vascular aetiology of eye diseases.

Depressive symptoms and mortality in patients with congestive heart failure: a six-year follow-up study.

Abstract:BACKGROUND To evaluate the possible long-term effect of symptoms of depression on mortality risk among patients with congestive heart failure. MATERIAL/METHODS Proportional hazard models were used to evaluate the effect of symptoms of depression on mortality among 119 clinically stable patients with symptomatic heart failure, recruited from an outpatient cardiology practice. Fifty-one deaths were registered during the six years of data collection, all from cardiac causes. RESULTS Symptom of depression were a significant predictor of mortality (relative risk per 1-point increase on the depression scale, 1.05, confidence interval, 1.00 to 1.08; p = 0.016), controlling for the confounding effects of the personality trait of neuroticism, heart failure severity (proANP), gender and age. CONCLUSIONS Given the long-term effect of depressive symptomatology on CHF mortality found in the present study, health care professionals should identify patients who are at risk of suffering from depression as early as possible, and should try to provide appropriate treatment. There is a need among CHF patients for studies that seek to examine whether treatment of depression reduces the risk of mortality.

Abstract:BackgroundTo identify thickness variations in the retinal nerve fiber layer around the optic disc and macula in patients with cerebral vein thrombosis (CVT) without papilledema.MethodsThis study included 28 patients with CVT diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Detailed ophthalmologic examination found bilateral vision 10/10, vision field test normal and fundus examination found no papilledema images. The patients had macular and optic retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFL) measured with spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) (Optovue, Fremont, CA). Patients had retinal nerve fiber thickness compared with a control group.ResultsWhen the effect on the macula and RNFL near the optic nerve disk is investigated, there was significant thinning identified in the macula inferior inner, temporal inner, superior inner and temporal outer quadrants (p = 0.009, 0.001, 0.026, 0.014, respectively) and in the inferior temporal quadrant of the optic nerve disk (p = 0.020) in CVT patients compared to normal individuals.ConclusionsEven after appropriate treatment of CVT patients, axonal loss was identified with OCT. As a result, it may be important to use OCT measurements to monitor CVT treatment.

Abstract:AbstractThe vascularity of the choroid has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various eye diseases. To date, no established quantifiable parameters to estimate vascular status of the choroid exists. Choroidal vascularity index (CVI) may potentially be used to assess vascular status of the choroid. We aimed to establish normative database for CVI and identify factors associated with CVI in healthy eyes. In this population-based study on 345 healthy eyes, choroidal enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography scans were segmented by modified image binarization technique. Total subfoveal choroidal area (TCA) was segmented into luminal (LA) and stromal (SA) area. CVI was calculated as the proportion of LA to TCA. Linear regression was used to identify ocular and systemic factors associated with CVI and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT). Subfoveal CVI ranged from 60.07 to 71.27% with a mean value of 65.61 ± 2.33%. CVI was less variable than SFCT (coefficient of variation for CVI was 3.55 vs 40.30 for SFCT). Higher CVI was associated with thicker SFCT, but not associated with most physiological variables. CVI was elucidated as a significant determinant of SFCT. While SFCT was affected by many factors, CVI remained unaffected suggesting CVI to be a more robust marker of choroidal diseases.

Abstract:Dear editor We read with great interest the article by Moleiro et al concerning peripapillary and subfoveal choroidal thickness (ChT) in case of retinal vein occlusions. We congratulate the authors because BRVO and CRVO are leading causes of visual loss in the world, especially in the elderly and research on this topic is always interesting. ChT measurements have been checked in several diseases but we have some concerns about the reliability of the measurements obtained in this paper. The reason is that, as shown in Figure 1, the foveal depression is not certainly identifiable because of retinal exudates, making the assessment of subfoveal ChT. In the case of small structures to be precise is very important because a few microns could significantly change the results as ChT varies greatly from the foveal to the perifoveal area. Even though it is known that the measurements should performed on images obtained in microns scale the authors evaluate ChT on images in pixels scale. In addition, several papers prove a relationship between ChT and axial length: eyes with a shorter axial length are related to thicker choroid and longer axial lengths to thinner one, but the authors did not consider the possible physiological difference between the axial length of both eyes. We are aware that axial length measurements are not very precise and some corrections are needed, but they should be precise enough for checking relationships.

Choroidal Morphologic and Vascular Features in Patients With Myopic Choroidal Neovascularization and Different Levels of Myopia Based on Image Binarization of Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract:Purpose: To characterize the choroidal morphologic and vascular features in different levels of myopes and patients with myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV).Methods: A total of 148 subjects were enrolled in this cross-sectional study, including 78 low-to-moderate myopes (LMM), 53 high myopes (HM), and 17 high myopic patients with mCNV. Ocular biometrics were measured using an optical low-coherence reflectometry device. Retinal and choroidal imaging was performed using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). Retinal parameters including retinal thickness and retinal volume were obtained from a built-in software. Binarization technique was adopted to investigate choroidal parameters including choroidal thickness (CT), vascular area, stromal area, and choroidal vascularity index (CVI). Choroidal parameters were measured at five locations to cover as much area of choroid as possible, and their patterns of distribution were further analyzed.Results: Patients with mCNV had an atrophic retina of comparable thickness to HM (273.65 +/- 17.28 vs. 276.49 +/- 13.29 mu m, p = 0.47), but the choroid was thinner than that of HM (153.94 +/- 15.12 vs. 236.09 +/- 38.51 mu m, p < 0.001). Subfoveal CVI was greatest in the mCNV eyes (0.651 +/- 0.009), followed by HM (0.645 +/- 0.012) and LMM eyes (0.636 +/- 0.012). Similar to CT, CVI was also found significantly different among these three groups at all five locations (p for trend < 0.001 for all locations). Axial length (AL) was negatively correlated with retinal volume (r = -0.236, p = 0.009), which is the only significant finding in associations between ocular factors and retinal parameters. Strong, negative correlations were identified between AL and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT, r = -0.820, p < 0.001). However, AL was positively correlated with subfoveal CVI (r = 0.668, p < 0.001). CVI was greater in myopic eyes with thinner choroid (r = -0.578, p < 0.001). BCVA exhibited no significant association with CVI (r = 0.139, p = 0.092), but was negatively correlated with SFCT (r = -0.386, p < 0.001) and positively correlated with AL (r = 0.351, p < 0.001).Conclusion: Choroid in patients with mCNV was thinner yet more vascularized than that in HM and LMM subjects. CVI increased with a longer AL which was associated with a smaller SFCT, choroidal vascular area (VA), and total choroidal area (TCA). Better BCVA was achieved in subjects with thicker SFCT and shorter AL.

Abstract:Background: Myopia is a condition in which the visual images come to a focus in front of the retina of the eye. This disease is a major cause of visual disability, which presents in 108 million persons globally. Purpose: This study aims to determine the relationship between the degree of myopia, the axial length, and the choroidal thickness (CT). Methods: This is an observational analytical study that made use of a cross-sectional design. A total of 59 participants with refractive errors underwent treatment at Hasanuddin University Hospital and 116 eyes were measured and analyzed. The choroidal thickness was measured using the Enhance Depth Imaging OCT (EDI-OCT) tool, which is divided into nine observational areas. Furthermore, all data obtained were compared using statistical analysis, such as the one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation test (p < 0.05). Results: There was a significant relationship between the choroidal thickness with axial length (p < 0.05) and myopia degrees (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The thickness of the choroid decreases with an increase in the axial length and degree of myopia, which further indicates that the higher the myopia degree, the thinner the choroidal vasculature.

Abstract:Purpose: To distinguish between central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) with and without thick choroid and to elucidate their characteristics of choroidal vasculature. Methods: This prospective observational study enrolled 76 eyes with treatment-naive CSC and 76 normal eyes. Mean + 2 times SD of subfoveal choroidal thickness of healthy individuals was set as the upper limit of normal choroidal thickness to divide patients with CSC into two groups: the thick-choroid and non-thick-choroid groups. Their choroid blood flow was compared using widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography. Results: According to the discrimination value of subfoveal choroidal thickness as 326.8 mu m, 76 eyes with CSC were divided into the thick-choroid (55, 72.4%) and non-thick-choroid (21, 27.6%) groups. Higher proportions of vortex vein anastomosis were found in the thick-choroid group (81.8% vs. 33.3%, P < 0.001). Choroid thickness, three-dimensional choroidal vascularity index, and mean choroidal stroma volume per 1 mm2 were higher in the thick-choroid group. In multivariate analysis, younger age, higher percentages of vortex vein anastomosis, and double layer sign were the independent predictors of choroid thickening in CSC. Conclusion: There are discrepancies in the degree of choroidal congestion and distribution of vortex veins in the CSC with different choroidal thicknesses.

Abstract:Named Data Networks (NDNs) offer a promising paradigm for the future Internet to cope with the growing demand for data. One of the main challenges in NDNs is how to support a seamless operation during mobility. In this paper, we investigate optimal caching for Producer mobility support and propose a scheme (named OpCacheMob) that exploits location predictors and data requests' patterns to cache the data proactively before handover occurs. In essence, OpCacheMob adopts the predicted future Interests, that will be sent to the mobile producers, and caches their data contents ahead. Thus, avoids Interest retransmission or redirection that increase the consumer's delay and decreases the network efficiency during producer's mobility. We provide a mathematical formulation for such caching problem that bounds both the cache update cost and the consumer delay while minimizing the total network overhead due to the change of content availability. OpCacheMob is then implemented in ndnSIM and evaluated against mainstream NDN mobility solutions. We demonstrate how the scheme can be used as a benchmark to measure the performance of other mobility schemes. In addition, a sensitivity analysis is presented to measure the impact of errors on the prediction gain of such solution.
Scleral thickness in simple versus complex central serous chorioretinopathy

Abstract:A bstract Purpose : To evaluate the association between scleral thickness and a newly developed multimodal imaging-based classification of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Design Retrospective, cross-sectional study. Methods : This study included 217 eyes of 217 patients classified as simple or complex CSC based on the established protocols. Clinical and anatomical factors were compared between the two types. The scleral thickness was measured at four locations using anterior-segment optical coherence tomography. Results : Of the 217 eyes, 167 were classified as simple CSC and 50 as complex CSC. The complex CSC group showed older age (P = .011), higher male ratio (P = .001), more bilateral involvement (P < .001), greater subfoveal choroidal thickness (P = .025), and higher frequency of loculation of fluid (P < .001) and ciliochoroidal effusion (P < .001) than the simple CSC group. The complex CSC group had significantly greater scleral thicknesses in the superior, temporal, inferior, and nasal directions (all P < .001) than the simple CSC group. Multivariable analysis revealed that older age (odds ratio [OR] 1.054, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.013–1.097, P < .001), male sex (OR 10.445, 95% CI 1.151–94.778, P < .001), bilateral involvement (OR 7.641, 95% CI 3.316–17.607, P < .001), and the mean value of scleral thicknesses in four directions (OR 1.022, 95% CI 1.012–1.032, P < .001) were significantly associated with the complex CSC. Conclusions : Older age, male sex, bilateral involvement, and thick sclera were associated with the complex CSC. Scleral thickness seemed to determine the clinical manifestations of CSC.

PurposeTo compare the central corneal thickness (CCT), the structural properties of the anterior chamber and optic disc in patients with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), and controls.Material and MethodsIn this prospective study, 31 eyes of 31 CRVO patients (group 1) (mean age: 65.7 ± 10.2 male/female:16/15), 42 eyes of 42 BRVO patients (group 2) (mean age: 61.5 ± 9.9, male/female: 21/21), and 41 controls (mean age: 61.2 ± 15.3, male/female:15/26) were enrolled. Intraocular pressure (IOP), corrected IOP (IOPcorr), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth & volume (ACD & ACV), iridocorneal angle (ICA), axial length (AL), retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness, cup to disc ratio (C/D), cup & rim volume, the scleral canal diameter (SCD), and mean & pattern deviation in visual field of the eyes with CRVO/BRVO, their fellow eyes and control eyes were evaluated.ResultsThere was no significant difference in IOP among groups (p:0.239), while IOPcorr was significantly higher in eyes with CRVO compared with eyes with BRVO (p:0.003). Central corneal thickness was significantly thinner in CRVO than both BRVO and controls (p:0.005, p:0.002 respectively). The difference in the RNFL thickness was significant among groups (p:0.019), and it was detected significant between CRVO eyes and controls (p:0.05). Anterior chamber volume was lower in eyes with BRVO than in normal eyes (p:0.009). There was no significant difference in AL, ACD, rim volume, cup volume, GCL thickness, C/D ratio, ICA, and PSD among groups.ConclusionThe patients with CRVO tend to have thinner corneas, and the evaluation of IOP and CCT can be overlooked during retinal follow-up. Intraocular pressure values corrected with CCT should always be take into account to prevent possible optic nerve damage.

Three-dimensional choroidal vascularity index in central serous chorioretinopathy using ultra-widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography

Abstract:BackgroundTo map and compare the three-dimensional choroidal vascularity index (3D-CVI) in eyes with unilateral central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), fellow eyes and control eyes using ultra-widefield swept source optical coherence tomography (UWF SS-OCTA). MethodsIn this prospective observational study, the 3D-CVIs were measured in 9 subfields or 1 x 1 mm grids by the UWF SS-OCTA with a viewing angle of horizontal 24 x vertical 20 mm. The proportions of vortex vein anastomoses and their corresponding CVI in the central regions were compared among the CSC, fellow and control eyes. Correlations of CVI and vascular density of the large choroidal vessel layer/choriocapillaris layer/choroidal thickness (CT) were also assessed. ResultsThirty-two eyes in 32 patients with unilateral CSC and 32 normal eyes were included in the study. The mean CVI in the eyes with CSC was significantly greater than that in the fellow eyes of CSC and control eyes (41.99 +/- 3.56% vs. 40.38 +/- 3.855%, P = 0.003; 41.99 +/- 3.56% vs. 38.93 +/- 4.067%, P = 0.004, respectively). The CVIs in superotemporal, inferotemporal and inferonasal regions were significantly higher in CSC eyes than control eyes (P = 0.03, P = 0.02, P = 0.008). In CSC eyes, there was a linear positive correlation between 3D-CVI and vascular density of the large choroidal vessel layer and CT in all subfields. The proportion of vortex vein anastomoses in CSC was 25/32 (78.1%), and significantly higher in fellow and control eyes (P < 0.001). The average central CVI was significantly higher in CSC eyes with anastomoses than in CSC eyes without anastomoses (42.8 +/- 5.1% vs. 38.4 +/- 2.7%, P = 0.039). CVIs in superior, central, inferior, superonasal, nasal and inferonasal regions were significantly correlated with vortex vein anastomoses (P < 0.05), regardless of CSC, fellow or healthy eyes. In addition, whether there were vortex vein anastomoses, CVI in superotemporal region was significantly higher in eyes with CSC (P = 0.002) and fellow eyes (P = 0.014), compared to control eyes. No significant correlation was found between hypertension and CVIs in the three groups. ConclusionRemodeling of choroidal drainage routes by venous anastomosis between superior and inferior vortex veins may be common in CSC. The 3D-CVI could be a comprehensive parameter to evaluate the choroid vasculature and help understand the pathogenesis of pachychoroid spectrum disease.
Microbiological safety of household membrane water filter.

Abstract:Waterborne pathogens outbreaks are major reasons of diarrhea disease worldwide. Detecting and monitoring emerging waterborne pathogens (EWPs) is important for drinking water microbiological safety. The microbiological safety of household water hollow fiber membrane filter which is the end of drinking water treatment process was studied with heterotrophic plate count (HPC) and real-time PCR method. The effect of the flow rate, idle time and washing fashion were investigated. Among the selected filters from three manufacturers, only the PVDF membrane water filter (Brand B) could achieve a good water purification criteria. Brand A was found a certain degree of EWPs in its effluent. The lowest bacteria-removing efficiency of the PVC membrane water filter was found Brand C. Our study showed that the microorganisms could reach up to 10(6) CFU ml(-1) and the 16s rDNA could reach up to 10(6) copies ml(-1) in the initial filtrate of Brand C. More species and amounts of EWPs were detected in the washing water. These results suggested that the popular household membrane filters might cause microbiological risks at certain circumstances such as the shock load of EWPs and leakage of the membranes in the case of abnormal source water or poor membrane filter quality.
Clinical, ultrasonographic and histological findings in varicose vein surgery

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to correlate the demographic data, different clinical degrees of chronic venous insufficiency (CEAP), ultrasound findings of saphenofemoral junction (SFJ) reflux, and anatomopathological findings of the proximal segment of the great saphenous vein (GSV) extracted from patients with primary chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) submitted to stripping of the great saphenous vein for the treatment of lower limb varicose. Method: This is a prospective study of 84 patients (110 limbs) who were submitted to the stripping of the great saphenous vein for the treatment of varicose veins of the lower limbs, who were evaluated for CEAP clinical classification, the presence of reflux at the SFJ with Doppler ultrasonography, and histopathological changes. We study the relationship between the histopathological findings of the proximal GSV withdrawal of patients with CVI with a normal GSV control group from cadavers. Results: The mean age of the patients was higher in the advanced CEAPS categories when comparing C2 (46,1 years) with C4 (55,7 years) and C5-6(66 years), as well as C3 patients (50,6 years) with C5-6 patients. The normal GSV wall thickness (mean 839,7 micrometers) was significantly lower than in the saphenous varicose vein (mean 1609,7 micrometers). The correlational analysis of reflux in SFJ with clinical classification or histopathological finding did not show statistically significant findings. Conclusions: The greater the age, the greater the clinical severity of the patients. The GSV wall is thicker in patients with lower limb varicose veins, but those histopathological changes are not correlated with the disease's clinical severity or reflux in the SFJ on a Doppler ultrasound.
Choroidal vascular analysis in myopic eyes: evidence of foveal medium vessel layer thinning

Abstract:PurposeTo analyse morphologic features of the choroid in Non-pathological myopic eyes using spectral-domain (SD) optical coherence tomography (OCT).MethodsRetrospective analysis of enhanced depth SD-OCT images of Non-pathological myopic eyes in comparison with age-matched healthy controls was performed. Choroidal thickness (CT) and large choroidal vessel thickness (LCVT) were measured at the fovea, 750 µm nasally from fovea (N750) and 750 µm temporally (T750) from fovea. Medium choroidal vessel thickness (MCVT) was calculated by subtracting LCVT from CT. Choriocapillaris was encompassed by MCVT, given its reduced thickness. Linear regression analysis evaluated the relationship between age and axial with CT, LCVT and MCVT.ResultsThe study group comprised 42 eyes of 31 patients (mean age 46.13 ± 15.63; 15 females). Control group included 57 eyes of 34 patients (mean age of 42.3 ± 15.29; 24 females). Mean axial length in myopic eyes and control group was 26.57 ± 1.27 and 23.59 ± 0.99 mm respectively. Myopic eyes showed significant thinning of MCVT and CT at all locations (p < 0.0001) compared to controls, unlike LCVT (p > 0.05). With each decade, thinning of up to 37 µm in CT was noted along with thinning of LCVT (up to 22.6 µm) and MCVT (up to 25 µm). Each mm increase in axial length caused 38.2 µm thinning of choroid along with LCVT (<10 µm), however, MCVT showed more notable thinning (>30 µm).ConclusionSignificant thinning of MCVT was noted in non-pathological myopic eyes in comparison to healthy subjects. It appears that MCVT has stronger relationship with age and axial length.
