Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of nitrate to ammonia is an appealing route to efficiently synthesizing ammonia at ambient conditions while reducing environmental nitrate pollutants. However, this approach is obstructed by the limited yield and selectivity of ammonia because the electrochemical nitrate-to-ammonia conversion involves multi-electron/proton transfer and faces competition from hydrogen evolution reaction. Here, we demonstrate a plasmon-assisted strategy to improve the performance of nitrate-to-ammonia electrochemical conversion by constructing plasmonic antenna-reactor catalysts, where Au and Pd nanoparticles/hydrogen substituted graphdiyne (Pd/HsGDY) work as light antenna and reaction site, respectively. Plasmonic excitation of Au-Pd/HsGDY catalysts can remarkably accelerate the nitrate reduction, with the yield rate, selectivity, and FE of ammonia respectively increased by 14.3, 2.1, and 1.8 times under optimal conditions. Mechanistic investigations unveil that Au plasmon-induced hot electrons facilitate nitrate-to-ammonia reaction by regulating the adsorption of reaction intermediates on Pd/HsGDY, wherein the rate-determining step was shifted from nitrate adsorption to *NH protonation and the overall apparent activation was reduced. Moreover, hot electrons suppress the competing hydrogen evolution by enlarging Gibbs free energy of hydrogen formation. These results open the avenue to develop a desirable catalyst for producing value-added ammonia from environmentally hazardous nitrate by a synergistic combination of electricity and light

Plasmonic Au nanoparticles anchored 2D WS 2 @RGO for high-performance photoelectrochemical nitrogen reduction to ammonia

Abstract:The photoelectrochemical reduction of nitrogen to ammonia (NH 3 ) is a sustainable and cost-effective process. The photoelectrocatalysts adsorb light, activate N 2 , and transport electrons efficiently to achieve high-yield NH 3 . In the present work, gold-tungsten sulfide-anchored reduced graphene oxides (Au-WS 2 @RGO) are developed as highly efficient photoelectrocatalysts for the N 2 reduction reaction (NRR) to synthesize NH 3 . The effect of Au nanoparticles loaded on WS 2 @RGO is optimized to achieve hierarchical 2D Au-WS 2 @RGO with excellent electrical conductivity, large active surface area, and unique porous network. Photoelectrocatalytic NRR of Au-WS 2 @RGO achieves remarkable NH 3 production rates with ultrahigh NH 3 yield of 34 μgh -1 mg cat -1 at −0.6 V, tremendous faradaic efficiency (FE) of 16.2 %, long durability for about 14 h, and prolonged lifetime of photo-carriers. DFT calculations support the experimental findings and demonstrate that Au-WS 2 @RGO as an effeient NRR catalyst with low overpotential. The Au-WS 2 @RGO shows the highest NRR performances even in atmospheric air (AirRR) and outperforms the state-of-the-art NRR catalysts. The high AirRR performance and durability of Au-WS 2 @RGO make it a promising alternative to Au-based NRR catalysts in photo electrolyzers. Further, an innovative methodology will be proposed for high-efficiency urea fertilizer production using Au-WS 2 @RGO-based NRR photocatalysts.

Abstract:Compared with the disordered arrangement, water molecules on the solid–liquid interface exhibit weakened hydrogen bonds accompanied by an ordered distribution under the LSPR effect excited by light illumination, which leads to an improved electron transfer efficiency and proton supply; therefore, enhancing the NH3 yield rate and Faradaic efficiency in NRR. The participation of high‐energy hot electrons generated from the non‐radiative decay of localized surface plasmons is an important mechanism for promoting catalytic processes. Herein, another vital mechanism associated with the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, significantly contributing to the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), is found. That is to say, the LSPR‐induced strong localized electric fields can weaken the intermolecular hydrogen bonds and regulate the arrangement of water molecules at the solid–liquid interface. The AuCu pentacle nanoparticles with excellent light absorption ability and the capability to generate strong localized electric fields are chosen to demonstrate this effect. The in situ Raman spectra and theoretical calculations are employed to verify the mechanism at the molecular scale in a nitrogen fixation process. Meanwhile, due to the promoted electron transfer at the interface by the well‐ordered interfacial water, as well as the participation of high‐energy hot electrons, the optimal catalyst exhibits excellent performance with an NH3 yield of 52.09 μg h−1 cm−2 and Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 45.82% at ─0.20 V versus RHE. The results are significant for understanding the LSPR effect in catalysis and provide a new approach for regulating the reaction process.

Abstract:Au nanocrystals modified holey PtTeAu metallene heteronanostructures (Au‐nanocrystals (NCs)/PtTeAu‐MLs) are designed through phase and interface engineering, achieving the high NH3 yield (3.499 mg h−1 mgcat−1) and Faradaic efficiency of 96.3% for nitrate (NO3−) reduction reaction (NO3RR) at −0.03 V. Furthermore, Au‐NCs exhibit particular localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) extinction in the visible spectral range, which enables Au‐NCs/PtTeAu‐MLs to generate plasma‐promoting activity for NO3RR. Ammonia (NH3) is an essential chemical for agricultural production and a promising next‐generation hydrogen‐rich fuel. The electrocatalytic nitrate (NO3−) reduction reaction (NO3RR) to NH3 provides a sustainable and low‐energy method to replace industrial NH3 synthesis. However, the NO3− to NH3 conversion is limited by the complex eight‐electron and nine‐proton reduction processes, thus it is highly desirable to develop efficient electrocatalytic materials to overcome the kinetic barrier of NO3RR. Herein, Au nanocrystals (Au‐NCs) modified holey PtTeAu metallene (PtTeAu‐ML) heteronanostructures (Au‐NCs/PtTeAu‐MLs) are designed through phase and interface engineering, which achieve the high NH3 yield (3.499 mg h−1 mgcat−1) and Faradaic efficiency of 96.3% for NO3RR at −0.03 V versus RHE. Detailed investigations reveal that the introduction of Te atoms significantly inhibits the high activity of Pt atoms for hydrogen evolution reaction that competes with NO3RR. Density functional theory results demonstrate that Au atoms further modulate the electronic structure of Pt in PtTe‐MLs, resulting in the upward shifted d band center of Pt and in turn the optimized NO3RR process on PtTeAu‐MLs. Furthermore, Au‐NCs allows the sustainable sunlight energy to accelerate the NO3RR kinetics at PtTeAu‐MLs because of the localized surface plasmon resonance of Au, inducing a higher NH3 yield of 4.684 mg h−1 mgcat−1 under light irradiation condition.

Abstract:Inspired by the enhancement effect of heterostructure, Au nanowires decorated ultrathin Co3O4 nanosheets (Co3O4‐NS/Au‐NWs) nanohybrids are proposed as electrocatalyst for nitrate electroreduction reaction. The Au nanowires not only promote the efficiency of nitrate reduction, but bring LSPR‐promotion effect for the Co3O4‐NS/Au‐NWs nanohybrids. Nitrate is a reasonable alternative instead of nitrogen for ammonia production due to the low bond energy, large water‐solubility, and high chemical polarity for good absorption. Nitrate electroreduction reaction (NO3RR) is an effective and green strategy for both nitrate treatment and ammonia production. As an electrochemical reaction, the NO3RR requires an efficient electrocatalyst for achieving high activity and selectivity. Inspired by the enhancement effect of heterostructure on electrocatalysis, Au nanowires decorated ultrathin Co3O4 nanosheets (Co3O4‐NS/Au‐NWs) nanohybrids are proposed for improving the efficiency of nitrate‐to‐ammonia electroreduction. Theoretical calculation reveals that Au heteroatoms can effectively adjust the electron structure of Co active centers and reduce the energy barrier of the determining step (*NO → *NOH) during NO3RR. As the result, the Co3O4‐NS/Au‐NWs nanohybrids achieve an outstanding catalytic performance with high yield rate (2.661 mg h−1 mgcat−1) toward nitrate‐to‐ammonia. Importantly, the Co3O4‐NS/Au‐NWs nanohybrids show an obviously plasmon‐promoted activity for NO3RR due to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) property of Au‐NWs, which can achieve an enhanced NH3 yield rate of 4.045 mg h−1 mgcat−1. This study reveals the structure–activity relationship of heterostructure and LSPR‐promotion effect toward NO3RR, which provide an efficient nitrate‐to‐ammonia reduction with high efficiency.

Abstract:Industrial NH 3 production mainly employs the well-known Haber-Bosch (H-B) process, which is associated with significant energy consumption and carbon emissions. Photoelectrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (PEC-NRR) under ambient conditions is considered a promising alternative to the H-B process and has been attracting increasing attention owing to its associated energy efficiency and environmentally friendly characteristics. The performance of a PEC-NRR system, such as the NH 3 yield, selectivity, and stability, is essentially determined by its key component, the photocathode. In this review, the latest progress in the development of photocathode materials employed in PEC-NRR is evaluated. The fundamental mechanisms and essential features required for the PEC-NRR are introduced, followed by a discussion of various types of photocathode materials, such as oxides, sulfides, selenides, black silicon, and black phosphorus. In particular, the PEC-NRR reaction mechanisms associated with these photocathode materials are reviewed in detail. Finally, the present challenges and future opportunities related to the further development of PEC-NRR are also discussed. This review aims to improve the understanding of PEC-NRR photocathode materials while also shedding light on the new concepts and significant innovations in this field. Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is considered as an attractive approach for ammonia synthesis under mild conditions. A bottleneck of NRR is the exploration of efficient catalysts for accelerating reaction kinetics, among which heterogeneous structures possessing distinct atomic arrangement could modify electronic structure, and therefore altering their NRR activity. Here, we report a facile strategy for fabricating hetero-phase metal oxides derived from metal organic framework that are further integrated with Au nanoparticles as NRR catalysts. The phase composition of zirconia can be easily adjusted by simply changing the reaction temperature, where the monoclinic and tetragonal phases with the roughly close proportions have a distinct interface, leading to a strong interaction between Au and ZrO2. The enhanced interaction renders Au to be more electropositive and facilitates stronger binding to N2. As a result, a remarkable ammonia yield of 22.32 μg h−1 mgcat. −1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 31.92% can be achieved at low overpotential. This work is expected to pave the way for the design of heterogeneous structures and the exploration of hetero-phase nanostructures in boosting the electrocatalytic NRR.

Abstract:Free‐standing plasmonic nanoarrays are designed for efficient and monolithic photoelectrochemical (PEC) nitrogen reduction toward ammonia (NH3) synthesis, especially under visible light irradiation. Intriguingly, the integration of both energetic hot electrons from plasmonic KxMoO3 nanoarrays and catalytically active sites of Au nanoparticles enables the Au/KxMoO3/Mo/KxMoO3/Au nanoarrays to exhibit a high‐performance plasmon‐driven PEC NH3 synthesis activity. Direct ammonia (NH3) synthesis from water and atmospheric nitrogen using sunlight provides an energy‐sustainable and carbon‐neutral alternative to the Haber–Bosch process. However, the development of such a route with high performance is impeded by the lack of effective charge transfer and abundant active sites to initiate the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Here, the authors report efficient plasmon‐induced photoelectrochemical (PEC) NH3 synthesis on the hierarchical free‐standing Au/KxMoO3/Mo/KxMoO3/Au nanoarrays. Endowed with energetically hot electrons and catalytically active sites, the plasmonic nanoarrays exhibit an efficient PEC NH3 synthesis rate of 9.6 μg cm−2 h−1 under visible light irradiation, which is among the highest PEC NRR systems. This work demonstrates the rationally designed plasmonic nanoarrays for highly efficient NH3 synthesis, which paves a new path for PEC catalytic reactions driven by surface plasmons and future monolithic PEC devices for direct artificial photosynthesis.

Highly Productive Electrosynthesis of Ammonia by Admolecule-Targeting Single Ag Sites.

Abstract:The ambient electrocatalytic N2 reduction reaction (NRR) is a promising alternative to the Haber-Bosch process for producing NH3. However, a guideless search for single-atom-based and other electrocatalysts cannot promote the NH3 yield rates by NRR efficiently. Herein, our first-principles calculations reveal that the successive emergence of vertical end-on *N2 and oblique end-on *NNH admolecules on single metal sites is key to high-performance NRR. By targeting the admolecules, single Ag sites with the Ag-N4 coordination are found and synthesized massively. They exhibit a record-high NH3 yield rate (270.9 μg h-1 mgcat.-1 or 69.4 mg h-1 mgAg-1) and a desirable Faradaic efficiency (21.9%) in HCl aqueous solution under ambient conditions. The generation rate of NH3 is stable during 20 consecutive reaction cycles, and the reduction current density is almost constant for 60 h. This work provides an effective targeting-design principle to purposefully synthesize active and durable single-atom-based NRR electrocatalysts.
Atomically Dispersed Zinc(I) Active Sites to Accelerate Nitrogen Reduction Kinetics for Ammonia Electrosynthesis

Abstract:Developing highly active and stable nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) catalysts for NH3 electrosynthesis remains challenging. Herein, an unusual NRR electrocatalyst is reported with a single Zn(I) site supported on hollow porous N-doped carbon nanofibers (Zn1 N-C). The Zn1 N-C nanofibers exhibit an outstanding NRR activity with a high NH3 yield rate of ≈16.1 µg NH3 h-1 mgcat -1 at -0.3 V and Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 11.8% in alkaline media, surpassing other previously reported carbon-based NRR electrocatalysts with transition metals atomically dispersed and nitrogen coordinated (TM-Nx ) sites. 15 N2 isotope labeling experiments confirm that the feeding nitrogen gas is the only nitrogen source in the production of NH3 . Structural characterization reveals that atomically dispersed Zn(I) sites with Zn-N4 moieties are likely the active sites, and the nearby graphitic N site synergistically facilitates the NRR process. In situ attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared measurement and theoretical calculation elucidate that the formation of initial *NNH intermediate is the rate-limiting step during the NH3 production. The graphitic N atoms adjacent to the tetracoordinate Zn-N4 moieties could significantly lower the energy barrier for this step to accelerate hydrogenation kinetics duing the NRR.

Abstract:Electrochemical NO3‐ reduction reaction (NO3RR) represents a green and sustainable way to produce valuable NH3 for both NH3 production and nitrate contaminant removal, and developing efficient, durable, highly selective catalyst is the key. Herein, we report a facile method to fabricate a catalyst composed of ultrafine Cu nanowires (Cu NWs) encapsulated by ZIF67, namely, CuNW@ZIF67, for efficient NH3 electrosynthesis from nitrate. The CuNW@ZIF67 catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance toward NO3RR in alkaline electrolyte, manifested by a large NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 93.7% at ‐0.5 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), a high energy efficiency over 30% at ‐0.7 V, and robust long‐term stability. Such intriguing catalytic properties are mainly ascribed to its structural merits and the strong electronic interaction between Cu NWs and ZIF67. DFT calculations revealed that, the Cu site can easily convert NO3‐ into NO2‐, while the Co site plays a critical role in catalyzing the NO2‐‐to‐NH3 process. The study can shed light on rational design of efficient, durable, and highly selective catalysts for NO3RR and beyond.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) in ambient condition provides a sustainable avenue for large-scale NH 3 production. However, the development of effective and durable NRR catalysts to promote NH 3 synthesis rate and Faraday efficiency (FE) remains a challenge due to the inertness of the N≡N bond. Herein, porous NiBi catalysts which provides abunant active sites were prepared by chemical dealloying of the precursor. Combining theoretical calculations and experimental verification, it is demonstrated that the synergistic effect of Ni and NiBi facilitates the adsorption of N 2 , inhibits the competition reaction, and reduces the free energy of intermediates (*NNH). Porous Ni 91.5 Bi 8.5 exhibits high catalytic activity for NH 3 formation with a yield of 18.35 μg h -1 mg -1 and a FE of 51.12% at -0.3V vs. RHE, outperforming most reported NRR electrocatalysts under ambient conditions. This strategy is an effective and universal technique for synthesizing catalysts that shows great potential in energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic N2 reduction reaction (eNRR) provides a promising carbon-neutral and sustainable ammonia-synthesizing alternative to the Haber-Bosch process. However, the nonpolar N2 has significant thermodynamic stability and requires ultrahigh energy to break down the N≡N bond. Here, we report the construction of local enhanced electric fields (LEEFs) by Ag nanoneedle arrays to promote N≡N fracture thus assisting the eNRR. The LEEFs could induce charge polarization on nitrogen atoms and reduce the energy barrier in the N2 first-protonation step. The detected N─N and N─H intermediates prove the cleavage of the N≡N bond and the hydrogenation of N2 by LEEFs. The increased LEEFs lead to logarithmic growth rates for the targeted eNRR and exponential growth rates for the unavoidable competitive hydrogen evolution reaction. Thus, regulation and tuning of LEEFs to ∼4 × 104 kV m-1 endows the raise of eNRR to the summit, achieving high ammonia selectivity with a Faradaic efficiency of 72.3 ± 4.0%.

Abstract:Photoelectrocatalysis or photoelectrochemistry (PEC) strategies to synthesize NH 3 by nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) have attracted considerable attention in recent years, but the PEC-NRR synthesis of NH 3 on photoanodes (vs commonly used photocathodes) is still a rather new topic worthy of in-depth study. Herein, the high-performance PEC-NRR synthesis of NH 3 is achieved on an oxygen-vacancy Bi 2 O 3 and then NiCe-layered double hydroxide modified fluorine-doped tin oxide photoanode biased at 0.4 V vs KCl-saturated calomel electrode, and the utilization of light source is improved by an Ag-mirror-film based light reflex. Under optimal conditions, the yield of NH 3 is 16.9 mmol h −1 m −2 , and it is increased to an apparent value of 27.8 mmol h −1 m −2 after counting the NRRs on both the photoanode and the Pt counter electrode, revealing that the photoanode strategy is promising for the green and sustainable synthesis of NH 3 under ambient conditions. The NH 3 -synthesis mechanism is discussed after various characterizations and theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrogen (N-2) reduction reaction (N2RR) under mild conditions is a promising and environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional Haber-Bosch process with high energy consumption and greenhouse emission for the synthesis of ammonia (NH3), but high-yielding production is rendered challenging by the strong nonpolar N equivalent to N bond in N-2 molecules, which hinders their dissociation or activation. In this study, disordered Au nanoclusters anchored on two-dimensional ultrathin Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets are explored as highly active and selective electrocatalysts for efficient N-2-to-NH3 conversion, exhibiting exceptional activity with an NH3 yield rate of 88.3 +/- 1.7 mu g h(-1) mg(cat.)(-1) and a faradaic efficiency of 9.3 +/- 0.4 %. A combination of in situ near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and operando X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy is employed to unveil the uniqueness of this catalyst for N2RR. The disordered structure is found to serve as the active site for N-2 chemisorption and activation during the N2RR process.

Abstract:Realizing nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to synthesis NH3 under mild conditions has gained extensive attention as a promising alternative way to the energy- and emission-intensive Haber–Bosch process. Among varieties of potential strategies, photoelectrochemical (PEC) NRR exhibits many advantages including utilization of solar energy, water (H2O) as the hydrogen source and ambient operation conditions. Herein, we have designed a solar-driven PEC-NRR system integrating high-efficiency Fe2O3-based photoanode and atomically dispersed cobalt (Co) cathode for ambient NH3 synthesis. Using such solar-driven PEC-NRR system, high-efficiency Fe2O3-based photoanode is responsible for H2O/OH− oxidation, and meanwhile the generated photoelectrons transfer to the single-atom Co cathode for the N2 reduction to NH3. As a result, this system can afford an NH3 yield rate of 1021.5 μg mgCo -1 h-1 and a faradic efficiency of 11.9% at an applied potential bias of 1.2 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode) on photoanode in 0.2 mol/L NaOH electrolyte under simulated sunlight irradiation.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic N 2 reduction reaction (NRR) is a promising approach for renewable NH 3 production but is constrained by poor activity and selectivity, owing to the sluggish hydrogenation kinetics. Herein, we prepare a nanoporous Ru-doped ReSe 2 (NP Ru-ReSe 2 ) with controllable selenium vacancies by regulating the amount of Ru dopants. The catalyst exhibits excellent the NRR performance, which affords a high Faradaic efficiency of 22.7% and NH 3 yield rate of 19.41 μg h −1 mg −1 at –0.4 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). In situ attenuated total reflectance–surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy studies combined with theoretical calculations unravel that a clear synergistic effect of Ru dopants and selenium vacancies on regulating the proton (H*) coverage on the ReSe 2 surface to accelerate the proton-coupled processes as NN → NNH. while N 2 dissociation becomes exothermic over the Ru active sites via Ru-to-N 2 π back-donation, lowering energy barriers of the rate-determining step, ultimately enhancing the overall NRR catalytic performance.

Abstract:Ammonia is a promising liquid-phase carrier for the storage, transport, and deployment of carbon-free energy. However, the realization of an ammonia economy is predicated on the availability of green methods for the production of ammonia powered by electricity from renewable sources or by solar energy. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of ammonium from nitrate powered by a synergistic combination of electricity and light. We use an electrocatalyst composed of gold nanoparticles, which have dual attributes of electrochemical nitrate reduction activity and visible-light-harvesting ability due to their localized surface plasmon resonances. Plasmonic excitation of the electrocatalyst induces ammonium synthesis with up to a 15× boost in activity relative to conventional electrocatalysis. We devise a strategy to account for the effect of photothermal heating of the electrode surface, which allows the observed enhancement to be attributed to non-thermal effects such as energetic carriers and charged interfaces induced by plasmonic excitation. The synergy between electrochemical activation and plasmonic activation is the most optimal at a potential close to the onset of nitrate reduction. Plasmon-assisted electrochemistry presents an opportunity for conventional limits of electrocatalytic conversion to be surpassed due to non-equilibrium conditions generated by plasmonic excitation.

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) provides a sustainable and alternative avenue to the Haber-Bosch process for ammonia (NH3) synthesis. Despite the great efforts made on catalysts and electrolytes, unfortunately, current NRR suffers from low selectivity due to the overwhelming competition with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we present an adjusted three-phase interface to enhance nitrogen (N2) coverage on a catalyst surface and achieve a record-high Faradic efficiency (FE) up to 97% in aqueous solution. The almost entirely suppressed HER process combined with the enhanced NRR activity, benefiting from the efficient three-interface contact line, is responsible for the excellent selectivity toward NH3, as evidenced by the theoretical and experimental results. Our strategy also demonstrates the applicability to other catalysts that feature strong H adsorption ability, to boost the FE for NH3 synthesis above 90% and to improve the NRR activity by engineering the catalysts.

Abstract:Utilizing hot carriers for efficient plasmonic-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs) to convert solar energy into secondary energy is one of the most feasible solutions to the global environmental and energy crisis. Finding a plasmonic heterogeneous nanostructure with a more efficient and reasonable hot carrier transport path without affecting the intrinsic plasmonic properties is still a major challenge that urgently needs to be solved in this field. Herein, the mechanism by which plasmonic-promoted interatomic hot electron redistribution on the surface of Au3Cu alloy nanoparticles promotes the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) is successfully clarified. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect can boost the transfer of plasmonic hot electrons from Au atoms to Cu atoms, trigger the interatomic electron regulation of Au3Cu alloy nanoparticles, enhance the desorption of ammonia molecules, and increase the ammonia yield by approximately 93.9%. This work provides an important reference for rationally designing and utilizing the LSPR effect to efficiently regulate the distribution and mechanism of plasmonic hot carriers on the surface of heterogeneous alloy nanostructures.
