Abstract:Electrospinning is a cost-effective technique for nanofiber fabrication with the most control over the parameters of nanofibers varying in size, shape, and doping. The as-prepared electrospun nanofiber membranes (ENMs) benefitting from characteristics such as interconnected porous structure, high porosity, large specific surface area, and flexible chemical/physical functionlization, has allowed it to possess unique advantage over conventional membranes in expense and efficiency, and evolve into a promising candidate in water desalination and water purification. Here, the progress of nanofiber-based composite membranes in two representative thermal-driven water treatment process, membrane distillation (MD) and pervaporation (PV), are mainly introduced. For the application of electrospun nanofibrous in membrane distillation, this chapter presents the facile approaches including spraying and dip-coating to fabricate advanced ENMs materials with super- and intrinsic-hydrophobicity. Fabricating parameters and adjusting measures such as such as spray density, coating amount, and the control of nanoparticle and polymer distribution are demonstrated in detail, as well as their influence on surface morphology and hydrophobicity. It is crucial to have a thin ENMs only with super- or intrinsic-hydrophobicity acting well in continuous vacuum membrane distillation. The micro-mechanism underlying membrane wetting behavior is put forward lastly in this part. For the application of electrospun nanofibrous in pervaporation, the main challenges in this field concerning the preparation of thin-film composite electrospun nanofiber membranes for pervaporation are discussed. The status and future perspectives for the strategies to fabricate a thin and dense selective layer on electrospun nanofiltration supports are reviewed. It is expected that the progress of ENMs technology will promote the prosperity and utilization in water treatment and will be the cost-effective and energy-saving avenue in addressing global water scarcity.
Preparation and Characterization of PVDF/nonwoven Fabric Flat-Sheet Composite Membranes for Desalination Through Direct Contact Membrane Distillation

Abstract:The polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) flat-sheet composite membranes were prepared for membrane distillation using hydrophilic polyester nonwoven fabric as a support through coating and wet phase inversion process. The influence of non-solvent additive on membrane morphology, porosity, pore size and pore size distribution, hydrophobicity and permeability were evaluated. It was found that the membrane with a mixture of acetone and H3PO4 as non-solvent additive had a thinner top skin and a more porous network sponge-like layer from the morphology study. This membrane also exhibited a narrow pore size distribution and its mean pore size was about 0.22 mu m in diameter. The rough membrane surface with smaller nodules produced a higher contact angle of 82.6 +/- 0.7 degrees with water according to atomic force microscope images analysis. During the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process of 35 g/L sodium chloride solution, the maximum transmembrane permeate flux about 47.6 kg/m(2) h was obtained with the feed solution at 80.5 degrees C and the cold distillate water at 20.0 degrees C. Furthermore, the membrane showed satisfying performance stability in the 240 h continuous desalination experiment, indicating that the prepared PVDF/nonwoven fabric flat-sheet composite membrane may be of great potential to be utilized in DCMD process for desalination. Abstract:This study focused on the water vapor removal efficiency by the surface-modified poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVA/PVDF) hollow fiber composite membranes with poly(dopamine) (PDA) in the dehumidification process. Two different ways of PDA modification were experimentally investigated and examined in terms of the separation performance of water vapor. A laboratory-scale testing device was set up to measure the water vapor permeance and the water vapor/H2 selectivity. Compared with the pristine PVA/PVDF membrane, the membrane modified using PVA/PDA mixture formed a dense and thin layer with high nitrogen solubility, which was not conducive to improve the water vapor removal efficiency. In contrast, the three-layer PDA–PVA/PVDF-modified membrane with PDA significantly enhanced the dehumidification performance. The influences of modification conditions (PDA concentration and PDA modification time) on the water vapor permeance and water vapor/H2 selectivity of PDA–PVA/PVDF-modified membrane were further studied. The highest water vapor permeance of 2898 GPU was obtained at certain conditions (0.1 g L−1 PDA solution and modification time of 30 min). It was demonstrated that the surface modification with PDA could play an important role in enhancing the hydrophilicity and water vapor/H2 separation performance for PVA/PVDF composite membranes.

Abstract:Abstract Membrane-based technology for gas separation has great potential in HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning) industry. In this research, the nanoparticle filled poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVA/PVDF) hollow fiber membrane was fabricated for indoor air dehumidification. The Poly(vinyl alcohol) thin film incorporated with nanoparticles was coated in the cavity of the Poly(vinylidene fluoride) substrate membranes. The enhanced performance of three types of nanoparticles [Zeolite, Titanium Dioxide (TiO 2 ) and Graphene Oxide (GO)] was investigated experimentally for evaluating the water vapor permeability. The effects of nanoparticle types and nanoparticle loading concentration on the permeability enhancement of the nanoparticles filled PVA/PVDF membrane were compared and analyzed. The results indicate that the nanoparticles additives of great benefit to the performance improvement of water vapor permeability. The enhancement performance of three nanoparticles is as follows: Zeolite > GO > TiO 2 . The addition of 0.05 wt% Zeolite nanoparticles lead to twice enhancement on the water vapor permeance than the original PVA/PVDF membranes. The GO nanoparticle additive enhances the water vapor permeance to around 1500 GPU (gas permeation unit) with the nanoparticle concentration from 0.1 wt% to 0.2 wt%. However, the addition of TiO 2 nanoparticle has no obvious enhancement due to its large particle size. This work provides a new perspective for strengthening the air dehumidification performance of composite membrane.

Abstract:The main challenges for membranes used in membrane distillation (MD) are well-designed porous structure and hydrophobic surface property. Hydrophobic nanofiber membranes possess high hydrophobicity, high surface porosity and adjustable pore sizes and membrane thickness, which make them an attractive candidate as MD membrane. The current study aims to fabricate and optimize polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber membranes for MD application. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), capillary flow porometer, geniometer, a homemade setup for liquid entry pressure (LEP) measurement and direct contact MD (DCMD) setup were used to characterize the resultant nanofiber PVDF membranes. Polymer dope compositions, spinning parameters such as sprayer moving speed and chamber moisture were optimized to examine their effects on pore size distribution of the membranes. Inorganic additives were also added into the dope to improve the electro-spinability of diluted polymer dopes in order to further decrease membrane pore size. Meanwhile, a heat-press post-treatment was considered as a necessary step to improve fresh nanofiber membrane integrity, enhance water permeation flux and help prevent membrane pores from wetting in DCMD operation. The experiment confirmed that all the electrospun membranes exhibit a rough surface with high hydrophobicity (>135° water contact angle). The post-treated PVDF nanofiber membranes were able to present a steady water permeation flux of about 21kgm−2h−1 throughout the entire testing period of 15h, using a 3.5wt% NaCl solution as the feed under the feed and permeate inlet temperatures of 323K and 293K, respectively. This result was better than these of commercial PVDF membranes and the nanofiber PVDF-clay membrane reported in literature, suggesting the competency of PVDF nanofiber membranes for DCMD applications.

Abstract:Membrane separation is a promising technology relative to the mature distillation technique due to its high energy efficiency. Incorporating nanoparticle to polymer matrix to fabricate mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) is one of effective ways to overcome the typical trade-off relationship between gas permeability and selectivity. Although silica based MMMs were studied for natural gas dehydration and desalination, it is rarely been investigated for air dehumidification. Herein, membrane material with high water vapor affinity of Pebax 1074 was applied as polymer matrix and silica was incorporated as filler to fabricate MMMs. The embedded silica filler can simultaneously enhance water vapor permeability (13–33% up) and H 2 O/N 2 selectivity (40–60% up) at an optimal loading of 1 wt%. The relatively hydrophobic form improved water vapor permeability due to the pronounced enlarged d-spacing and the resultantly enhanced diffusivity coefficient. The more hydrophilic filler enhanced more H 2 O/N 2 selectivity than that of the counterpart because of the largely improved water vapor solubility coefficient. The concomitant improvement of both water vapor permeability and its selectivity makes it stand out from the various previously reported membranes, demonstrating its potential for scale-up application.

Abstract:Electrospun nanofiber membranes show significant advantages and potential in membrane distillation (MD) technology due to their high water flux and low mass transfer resistance. However, their further development is limited by the unsatisfactory pore size distribution and insufficient hydrophobicity that makes them prone to wetting. Hence, we prepared TNPs/PDMS colloidal particles by combining titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TNPs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by a simple method with electrospun nanofiber membranes as the support layer, and prepared nanofiber membranes with dense superhydrophobic skin layer by depositing them on the membrane surface by vacuum filtration. The membrane obtained under optimal conditions had a reduced average pore size of 0.37 μm from 0.84 μm in the original membrane and had a water contact angle higher than 160° and a sliding angle less than 20°, which gave it a liquid entry pressure (LEP) of 1.58 bar. It has shown impressive resistance to wetting when treating 3.5 wt% NaCl solution containing 0.1-0.4 mM SDS and natural seawater. In addition, it has a durability of up to 60 h, a high water flux of 38.7 kg·m −2 ·h −1 , and a retention rate of more than 99.99%.

Abstract:Directional water transport (DWT) textiles, possessing moisture-wicking and evaporative fast-drying capabilities, help in creating a comfortable microenvironment for the human body. However, fabricating synthetic materials that follow Murray's law and replicate the pore gradient of vascular plants remains challenging, thereby impeding the achievement of a good combination of moisture conduction, fast drying, and osmosis resistance. In this study, DWT membranes comprising three layers of pore/wetting gradients were constructed using a straightforward electrospinning/netting technique. The inner and intermediate layers, comprising hydrophobic polyurethane (PU) and hydrophilic PU-hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (PU-HPAN) nanofibers with average diameters of 1.83 μm and 255 nm, respectively, were prepared via electrospinning. Furthermore, the superhydrophilic outer layer (HPAM) comprised HPAN and a blend of acrylic acid/acrylamide with an average diameter of 76 nm. This layer was prepared via the electro-netting of dilute solution with high electrical conductivity, resulting in a spontaneous and continuous water transport, coupled with rapid drying. The DWT membranes exhibited an ultrahigh one-way transport capability (R) of 1270%, achieving an evaporation rate of 0.86 g h −1 . Additionally, they demonstrated rapid drying within 16 min, effectively preventing reverse osmosis under pressure. Therefore, these membranes can be applied for moisture wicking, water extraction, and micro fluidic control. Super hygroscopic nanofibrous membrane-based moisture pump for solar-driven indoor dehumidification

Abstract:Desiccants play vital roles in dehumidification and atmospheric water harvesting; however, current desiccants have mediocre hygroscopicity, limited recyclability, and high energy consumption. Herein, we report a wood-inspired moisture pump based on electrospun nanofibrous membrane for solar-driven continuous indoor dehumidification. The developed moisture pump with multilayer wood-like cellular networks and interconnected open channels is composed of a desiccant layer and a photothermal layer. The desiccant layer exhibits an unprecedented moisture absorption capacity of 3.01 g g-1 at 90% relative humidity (RH), fast moisture absorption and transport rates, enabling atmospheric water harvesting. The photothermal layer shows a high solar absorption of 93%, efficient solar thermal conversion, and good moisture permeability, thus promoting water evaporation. The moisture pump efficiently reduces the indoor relative humidity to a comfort level (40‒60% RH) under one-sun illumination. This work opens the way to develop new-generation, high-performance nanofibrous membrane-based desiccants for energy-efficient humidity control and atmospheric water harvesting.
Low surface energy nanofibrous membrane for enhanced wetting resistance in membrane distillation process

Abstract:Membranes with hierarchical structure have higher water contact angle due to affording more air pockets in its nano-micro regions, and then have been known as more hydrophobic. However, the hydrophobicity could be vanished after air in pockets has been exhausted such as in the vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) process. Here, an intrinsically hydrophobic electrospun nanofiber membrane (ENM), whose hydrophobicity is entirely depended on these materials surface energy, was proposed to promote the wetting resistance without the aid of any hierarchical structure. The novel composite ENMs were fabricated using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as matrix material, and then covered it with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) of much lower surface energy via a facile dip-coating. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of nanofibers in composite ENMs showed almost no hierarchical structure was existed, while the hierarchical structure was supposed to lower water contact angle in theory. However, the composite ENMs exhibited a higher water-repellency as the surface energy of nanofibers became lower. Therefore, the composite ENMs cannot be wetted by condensed vapor throughout the MD process, and a thinner membrane exhibited an excellent durability in the continuous vacuum MD tests. The result indicated that for the ENMs material of intrinsic hydrophobicity, the low surface energy is the essential quality to exhibit the strong and durable wetting resistance in VMD process, what is difficult to achieve by conventionally hierarchical architecture constructing on membrane surface.
Superhydrophobic nanofiber membranes with 3D-network reinforced pore structure for membrane distillation

Abstract:Electrospun nanofiber membranes (ENMs) have garnered significant attention among researchers for membrane distillation (MD) in treating high-salinity wastewater due to their high water flux and low mass transfer resistance. However, a significant challenge in using ENMs for MD is membrane wetting, which results from the deformation of their weakly randomly overlaid nanofibers structure due to water flow shear forces. Herein, we focused on the membrane's structure and successfully prepared superhydrophobic nanofiber membranes with 3D-network reinforced pore structure by immersing PVDF ENMs in a mixed solution of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TNPs) after a hot-pressing treatment for impregnation and coating. The resulting membrane exhibits exceptional properties, including a high water contact angle (WCA) of 160.3°, a high liquid entry pressure (LEP) of 1.57 bar, and sustained structural integrity with an unchanged pore size distribution even after 5 h of water scouring. These characteristics contribute to a water flux of 39.3 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and an unexpectedly long durability of up to 102 h, along with an outstanding salt rejection exceeding 99.99 %. Moreover, the membrane demonstrates stable water flux and resistance to wetting when processing a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution containing 0.1 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), underscoring its significant potential for MD applications.

Abstract:Waterproof and breathable (W&B) membranes, resisting the intrusion of liquid water while allowing transmission of vapor, have been widely applied in various applications. However, there are still great challenges to construct superhydrophobic and mechanically robust W&B membranes. Here, we present a facile strategy to prepare superhydrophobic nanofibrous membranes by combining humidity-induced electrospinning with thermal-pressing treatment. The hierarchical rough structures generated by humidity-induced phase separation of polyvinylidene fluoride jets endow the fiber with superhydrophobicity. Meanwhile, the thermal-pressing manipulation ensures that strong physical bonding exists between nanofibers, which greatly improves the membrane's mechanical and waterproof performances. Significantly, the resulted membranes exhibited desirable superhydrophobicity with water contact angle of 151°, remarkable water and oil intrusion pressures of 81.8 and 36.2 kPa, respectively, high water vapor transmission rate of 7948 g m −2 d −1 , and satisfactory tensile strength of 8.1 MPa. The successful development of such membranes provides a new inspiration for the manufacture of superhydrophobic protective membranes.

Abstract:The further advance of membrane distillation (MD) is hampered due to inadequate membrane durability challenged by wetting-induced performance deterioration. The current study presents a novel approach to fabrication of superhydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes via construction of hierarchical textures on membrane surfaces based on a nanocasting strategy. Two types of PVDF membranes with different surface textures were prepared, separately using a stainless-steel mesh (SSM) or its negative polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) template as a fabrication substrate. The obtained membranes were systematically characterized in terms of membrane morphology, wetting behavior, MD performance, and antifouling performance. Consequently, the PDMS-based membrane obtained a plaited surface texture, resulting in a high static contact angle of ~153° and a high sliding angle of >90°. The resultant parahydrophobic membrane surface resembled a petal surface. The SSM-based membrane obtained a wave-like pattern, resulting in a high static contact angle of ~164° and a low sliding angle of ~6.8°. The resultant superhydrophobic membrane surface resembled a lotus leave surface. Moreover, both membranes achieved higher water flux and enhanced antifouling performance with no significant compromise in salt rejection. Particularly, the SSM-based membrane achieved the highest flux and best antifouling performance, suggesting promising applications in various fields.

Abstract:A new class of PVDF-based membranes suitable for membrane distillation were prepared via electrospinning. The classical fiber morphology of PVDF electrospun membranes was changed to generate a beaded structure by tuning the solvent ratio and operating parameters during membrane fabrication. Results showed that by increasing the N, N-Dimethylacetamide (DMAC) to acetone ratio used to prepare the PVDF solution, PVDF micron-sized beads can be created within the fiber structure of the electrospun membrane. This is mainly ascribed to the lower saturated vapor pressure of the DMAC, which is slowing the polymer solidification rate, resulting in a fiber-to-bead morphology. An increase in the bead density induces an increase of the WCA of the resulting membrane (from 134° to 148°), with a concomitant reduction of the membrane thickness. Large bead-to-fiber ratios may be obtained by working with low PVDF concentration (17 wt%) but at the expense of membrane mechanical stability. The latter can be enhanced by increasing the PVDF solution concentration. The results show that simultaneous deployment of 17 and 25 wt% of PVDF solutions in a double-needle electrospinning device enables the fabrication of electrospun PVDF-beaded membranes with high hydrophobicity, low thickness and good mechanical stability for membrane distillation. The best membrane showed a 34% increase in membrane permeability and maintained a more stable water flux compared to a commercial PVDF membrane when filtering hypersaline solution in high-recovery direct contact membrane distillation. Thus beaded PVDF structured electrospun structures may represent a facile method to improve PVDF membrane performance in MD applications.

Abstract:In this work, a waterproof and breathable nanofibrous membrane with thermal‐regulated performance and exhibits excellent mechanical property is fabricated by coaxial electrospinning. The fiber shell is consisted of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinyl butyral (PVB), and the core is octadecane. First, well‐performed waterproof and breathable membranes are obtained by optimizing its morphology and pore structure. Then octadecane is loaded into the fibers in the form of core by coaxial electrospinning, though it gives the membranes a thermal regulating function, but the drawback is the sacrifice of overall properties. Thus, carbon nanotubes are loaded into the shell and studied, finally, the best membrane has a comprehensive performance with hydrostatic pressure of 59.2 kPa, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 7.846 kg m−2 d−1, latent heat of 50.1 J g−1, as well as excellent tensile strength of 20.2 MPa, which shows its certain reference significance to the synthesis of multifunctional membrane.

Abstract:Liquid desiccant air‐conditioning system has received increasing attention due to the urgent demand for humidity control and antibacterial in today's medical environment. In this system, the main parameters affecting the dehumidification performance are the specific surface area, hydrophilicity and wettability of the packing material, and the nanofiber membrane has those characteristics. Here, polyacrylonitrile/lithium chloride nanofiber membrane was fabricated by electrospinning with island nozzle. The nanofiber membrane had the dehumidification capacity with moisture absorption of 3.72 g/g. Simultaneously, the antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was higher than 99%, which satisfied the specifications for air purification antibacterial materials in the medical and health sectors (GB/T 18801‐2015). More importantly, the weight per unit time and the thickness per unit area of the nanofiber membrane fabricated with island nozzle were 2.4 times and 3.4 times of those fabricated with single nozzle, respectively, indicating that the preparation efficiency was significantly improved, which provided a scheme for the rapid formation of nanofiber membranes.

Abstract:To improve the air humidification capacity of polyvinylidene fluoride hollow fiber membranes, surface coating method is applied to superhydrophobicly modify the hollow fiber membranes to achieve high performance. Chemical bonds were used as a bridge to connect the membrane and the coating. Silica is loaded on the membrane surface firstly, and then, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and polydimethylsiloxane containing mercapto groups (PDMS) were introduced on the surface of the membrane through the click reaction to build a superhydrophobic surface with a reentrant structure. Then the effect of the content of POSS and PDMS on the humidification performance was explored. The superhydrophobic membrane coated with SiO 2 -PDMS-POSS was obtained, and the surface contact angle was 156.2°. The modification process occurs only on the outer surface of the hollow fiber membrane and not in the cross-sectional pores of the fiber. Besides, the coating of the modified superhydrophobic membrane exhibited excellent mechanical stability. The reentrant structure produced by nano-SiO 2 , POSS and the low surface energy of PDMS together gives the composite membrane superhydrophobic characteristics. The results of the humidification experiment shows that the humidification efficiency increased from 48.26 to 58.21%.

Biomimetic Aligned Micro-/Nanofibrous Composite Membranes with Ultrafast Water Transport and Evaporation for Efficient Indoor Humidification

Abstract:Humidifying membranes with ultrafast water transport and evaporation play a vital role in indoor humidification that improves personal comfort and industrial productivity in daily life. However, commercial nonwoven (NW) humidifying membranes show mediocre humidification capability owing to limited wicking capacity, low water absorption, and relatively less water evaporation. Herein, we report a biomimetic micro-/nanofibrous composite membrane with a highly aligned fibrous structure using a humidity-induced electrospinning technique for high-efficiency indoor humidification. Surface wettability and roughness are also tailored to achieve a high degree of superhydrophilicity by embedding hydrophilic silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) into the fiber matrix. The synergistic effect of the highly aligned fibrous structure and surface wettability endows composite membranes with ultrafast water transport and evaporation. Strikingly, the composite membrane exhibits an outstanding wicking height of 19.5 cm, a superior water absorption of 497.7%, a fast evaporation rate of 0.34 mL h-1, and a relatively low air pressure drop of 14.4 Pa, thereby achieving a remarkable humidification capacity of 514 mL h-1 (57% higher than the commercial NW humidifying membrane). The successful synthesis of this biomimetic micro-/nanofibrous composite membrane provides new insights into the development of micro-/nanofibrous humidifying membranes for personal health and comfort as well as industrial production.

Abstract:An efficient and powerful strategy is reported to create durable superhydrophobic nanofibrous membranes with micro/nano hierarchical rough structures and low‐energy surfaces via combining humidity‐induced electrospinning with coat‐crosslinking technology. The resultant membranes present superhydrophobicity with water contact angle of ≈154°, good self‐cleaning and anti‐icing properties, robust waterproofness of 83.4 kPa, and high breathability of 3.71 kg m−2 d−1. Man‐made superhydrophobic membranes are of interest for various applications in energy, environment, and medical fields. However, simultaneously achieving durable superhydrophobicity, robust waterproofness, and high breathability of the membranes is still challenging. Herein, an efficient and powerful strategy is reported to create superhydrophobic membranes with perdurable liquid repellency and robust breathability via combining humidity‐induced electrospinning with coat‐crosslinking technology. The micro/nano rough structure is in situ constructed based on manipulating the phase separation of electrospun jets; meanwhile, the waterborne acrylic resins are bridged to the surface of nanofiber to endow the membranes with stable low surface energy via coating and crosslinking treatment. Eventually, the resultant membranes present superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of ≈154°, good self‐cleaning and anti‐icing properties, robust waterproofness of 83.4 kPa, and high breathability of 3.71 kg m−2 d−1. More interestingly, the nanomaterials can maintain durable superhydrophobicity even after exposure to various severe conditions. The successful creation of high‐performance superhydrophobic membranes opens a new avenue for synthesizing advanced functional materials for application in a variety of fields.

Abstract:Due to water shortages, people have to use wastewater, seawater and brackish groundwater. People prefer to use membrane-based technologies to produce high-quality water, because they are environmentally friendly and have higher energy efficiencies than traditional thermal methods. The desalination nanofiltration (NF) membranes developed demonstrate a trade-off between water permeabilities and selectivities. Researchers are devoted to develop desalination NF membranes with both high water permeabilities and high selectivities. Using novel strategies, we successfully constructed double-high-performance NF membranes with a polyamidepolyester composite layer and a surface layer via a facile additional two-step approach. We used both triethanolamine (TEOA) and piperazine (PIP) to react with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) to form a composite active layer and coated the self-assembled polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of the composite active layer. To our knowledge, their performances are among the topmost of developed NF membranes for desalination and dye pollutant removal. We used scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and water contact angle gauge (WCA) to investigate the membrane surface characteristics. The membrane obtained via the two-step approach has a water permeability of up to 21.3 LMH/bar, while that of the control polyamide NF membrane is as low as 8.2 LMH/bar. The developed membrane owes apparently improved water permeability in addition to maintaining high selectivities. Furthermore, the coating of the self-assembled PDA can alleviate membrane fouling. We also performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study why the use of TEOA in addition to PIP to react with TMC improves membrane performances and give guidances and inspirations to future researches.
