Abstract:As a conflict between two major agricultural powers, the Russia–Ukraine war has various negative socioeconomic impacts that are now being felt internationally and might worsen, notably, for global food security. If the war deepens, the food crisis will worsen, posing a challenge to many countries, especially those that rely on food imports, such as those in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Simultaneously, the war came at a bad time for global food markets because food prices were already high due to disruptions in the supply chain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, strong global demand, and poor harvests in some countries. Understanding how conflict-related disruptions in global food and fertilizer markets might affect price and availability is critical for understanding the overall impact on global food security. Further, four months into the war, its implications for food security suggest that this review is timely, urgent, and highly needed. Accordingly, this paper aims to investigate the Russia–Ukraine war's direct and indirect impact on global food security. The paper highlights that the war resulted in immediate and far-reaching cascading consequences on global food security: Ukrainian exports have stopped, conscription and population displacement have caused labor shortages, access to fertilizers is restricted, and future harvests are uncertain. First, Ukraine's export capacity has been hampered. Secondly, conscription and population displacement caused labor shortages. Thirdly, access to vital agricultural products such as fertilizers is also constrained. The war may delay spring planting and winter crop harvesting. Further, the war has indirect and cascading effects. Indeed, rising fertilizer costs may reduce their use and crop yields. Moreover, as seen during the 2007–2008 food crisis, export restrictions and speculation are driving up international prices and worsening the situation. Furthermore, the war triggered a panic buying movement at country and individual levels. Finally, the war may jeopardize the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), notably SDG 1 (No poverty), SDG 2 (Zero hunger), and DG 12 (Responsible consumption and production). However, the consequences of the war on food security are being exacerbated by a variety of underlying rigidities, vulnerabilities, and inefficiencies in global food systems. Accordingly, the transition toward healthy, equitable, and ecologically sustainable food systems must be strengthened by adopting urgent and long-term reforms and policies.

Abstract:On February 24, 2022, the Russian invasion of Ukraine or “special military operation” in Ukraine caused a shock around the world. The article examines the impact of the war between Ukraine and Russia on the world food and energy sector. Global resource markets suffer from the effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine; the two countries are major suppliers of energy, food and fertilizers. Supply disruptions and the sudden introduction of unprecedented economic sanctions, trade restrictions and political interventions in response to the crisis have led to a sharp rise in commodity prices. Prior to the conflict, demand for global resources already exceeded supply and raised prices as the economy recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led to a global cost of living crisis characterized by rising levels of energy and food poverty. This situation is likely to worsen significantly as a result of the war in Ukraine and pose a threat to human security, especially among the poor and vulnerable. The extremely negative consequences of the war require more detailed study and analysis, which will allow us to form an objective understanding of the world economy during the war. Mitigating the effects of war on the population is a top priority for politicians, so understanding the economic situation is essential. The Russian-Ukrainian crisis poses new challenges to the international community, exacerbating supply chain disruptions, market instability, resource instability, displacement and significant geopolitical change. Governments must build the longterm resilience of societies and economies to global shocks. There is an urgent need for aggressive external intervention to avoid a food crisis. The exchange of information between countries on their food status, as well as the preservation of borders for agricultural exports, proposed by the G7 agriculture ministers, is an important response to the looming food crisis. It has been found out that close links with trade and the payment system will limit trade, remittances, investment and tourism, negatively affecting economic growth, inflation and external and fiscal accounts. Although raw material exporters should benefit from higher international prices, they run the risk of declining energy exports if sanctions apply to pipelines through Russia.The main consequences of the war will lead to higher food and energy prices and a tougher global financial situation. Socio-economic pressures in many countries will increase, as well as the vulnerability of public debt and the effects of the pandemic, which has already plagued millions of households and businesses.

Abstract:Introduction. As the attack on Ukraine intensified, the United States and other Western countries imposed unprecedented economic sanctions on Russia and declared their support for Ukraine. Problem. Consideringthe far-reaching impact of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine on international development in the long run, it is extremely important for the international community to implement comprehensive solutions focused on development priorities. The aim of the article is to study the impact of the war in Ukraine on inflation risks and challenges for the world economy. Methods. The information base of the study was the study of official information and periodicals. Methodological basis of the research: analysis, synthesis, systems approach, statistical methods and abstract-logical methods. Results. The new sanctions regime and the cost of the war are likely to push the Russian economy into a recession worse than the 1998 recession and the Russian financial crisis, accompanied by significant increases in inflation and the cost of living of Russian households. According to our preliminary estimates, Russia’s real GDP will fall by 4–9 % in 2022, while growth will range from –1 % to 2.5 % in 2023. Inflation may rise to 11–17 % in 2022, fall to 6–12.03 % in 2022. A key factor in these projections is that Russia’s oil and gas exports, especially to Europe, are largely continuing, but this may change if sanctions are tightened. In 2021, Russia’s exports of mineral fuels, oils and distillation products amounted to 199 USDbillion. USA, which accounts for 40.5 % of Russia’s total exports and 11.4 % of its GDP. Depending on the duration of sanctions and the possibility of their strengthening, the world economy may be significantly affected during 2022–2023. Conclusions. It is expected that the war in Ukraine will have a significant impact on the economy and consumers in terms of such actions: expanding the supply chain, increasing inflationary pressures, deteriorating economic prospects.

Abstract:Posttranslational modification with the geranygeranyl moiety is essential for the ability of Rab GTPases to control processes of membrane docking and fusion. This modification is conferred by Rab geranylgeranyltransferase (RabGGTase), which catalyzes the transfer of two 20-carbon geranylgeranyl groups from geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate onto C-terminal cysteine residues of Rab proteins. The enzyme consists of a catalytic alpha/beta heterodimer and an accessory protein termed Rab escort protein (REP-1) that delivers the newly prenylated Rab proteins to their target membrane. In order to understand the structural basis of Rab prenylation, we have investigated in vitro assembly and crystallization of the RabGGTase:REP-1:Rab complex. In order to ensure maximal stability of the ternary complex, we generated its monoprenylated form, which corresponds to a reaction intermediate and displays the highest affinity between the components. This was achieved by expressing the individual components in baculovirus and Escherichia coli systems with subsequent purification followed by in vitro monoprenylation of Rab7 with immobilized recombinant RabGGTase. Purified monoprenylated REP-1:Rab7 was complexed with recombinant RabGGTase and crystallized in hanging drops. The crystals obtained initially diffract to 8 A on an in-house X-ray source.

Abstract:The global war has disrupted trade, production, and consumption, leading to increased commodity prices and a threat to global food security. The article examines the long-term consequences of the war on global food and environmental security, focusing on disruptions in food markets and infrastructure destruction. The study utilizes the FAOSTAT database and food security indicators to assess the state of food security in Russia and Ukraine from 2010 to 2021. The results reveal numerous negative direct and indirect effects on food and environmental security, with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) being among the most affected regions. Prior to the Russian invasion in February 2022, Ukraine was a major grain exporter to the MENA region. However, the war caused extreme volatility in food insecurity. Among the key consequences of the war, it should be mentioned about the decrease in the volume of production of agricultural products in Ukraine due to the reduction of cultivated areas as a result of blockades and destruction, which led to export restrictions, and loss of producers’ income. The countries of the Global South are most vulnerable to the food crisis (Turkey, Egypt, Georgia, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya), given the significant import dependence on Ukraine and the significant increase in product prices. The war has also resulted in pollution of water and land resources, air contamination, supply and sewage problems, and deteriorating sanitary conditions.

Abstract:The war in Ukraine has caused severe disruption to national and worldwide food supplies. Ukraine is a major exporter of wheat, maize, and oilseeds, staples that are now suffering a war-triggered supply risk. This paper describes the background of the problem and illustrates current trends by outlining some of the measures that may be deployed to mitigate the conflict's impacts on achieving SDG 2 (Zero hunger), especially focusing on ending hunger, achieving food security, improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture. In order to understand the main research strands in the literature that are related to food security in the context of wars, the authors adopted a bibliometric literature review based on the co-occurrence of terms technique, conducted with 631 peer-reviewed documents extracted from the Scopus database. To complement the bibliometric assessment, ten case studies were selected to narrow down the food insecurity aspects caused by the war in Ukraine. The co-occurrence analysis indicated four different thematic clusters. In the next stage, an assessment of the current situation on how war affects food security was carried out for each one of the clusters, and the reasons and possible solutions to food security were identified. Policy recommendations and theoretical implications for food security in the conflict context in Ukraine were also addressed.

Abstract:Ukraine and Russia are two important grain producers and exporters in the world, accounting for 12% and 17% of the world's wheat exports, respectively. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine may greatly impact Ukraine's wheat production and export as well as Russia's wheat export. Satellite observations have showed signs of wheat production reduction in Ukraine in the season 2021–2022. Considering the uncertainty of the conflict duration, we have designed three scenarios (i.e., slight, medium, and severe) depending on how the war would significantly impact the wheat harvest and trade disruption. From analysis of potential impacts of the conflict on global wheat market under the general equilibrium trade model, we have found that the conflict would lead to a trade drop (60%), soaring wheat prices (50%), and severe food insecurity with decreased purchasing power for wheat (above 30%) in the most severe scenario, especially for countries that heavily rely on wheat imports from Ukraine, such as Egypt, Turkey, Mongolia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. Considering the role of Russia and Ukraine in agricultural input sectors including oil, natural gas, and fertilizers, especially Russia, the trade blockade caused by the conflict will give rise to price increase by 10%–30% and welfare decline by 15–25% for most affected countries. The conflict would put as many as 1.7 billion people in hunger and 276 million people in severe food insecurity. Food shortages, energy shortages and inflation have spread to many countries like dominoes which have fallen into trouble one after another with social unrest day after day. Our analysis also shows that countries including the United States, China, India, Canada, Australia, France, Argentina, and Germany would increase their wheat production and exports for the reconstruction of the global wheat supply pattern. The modeled results indicate that the conflict-induced global wheat crisis and food insecurity can be notably alleviated if these countries increase their production by 2%–3% in 2022–2023 and unnecessary trade restrictions are exempted.

Abstract:The Ukraine war has led to a severe global food crisis due to complex supply disruptions and price increases of agricultural inputs. Countries of the Middle East have been directly affected because of their high dependence on food imports from Russia and Ukraine. Furthermore, this food crisis comes at times of high baseline vulnerability due to the compound impacts of COVID-19, repeated food shocks, and weakened states due to political-economic difficulties. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the food-related vulnerability of Middle Eastern countries in the wake of the Ukraine war. It contextualizes the varying impacts of this crisis in the region, and highlights country-level response strategies. The analysis shows a concerning and deepened crisis in the case of highly exposed and politically fragile countries with weakened food sectors; e.g., Lebanon, Sudan, and Yemen. Political economic instabilities, limited domestic agriculture, and the lack of reliable grain reserves have aggravated the current food crisis in some countries. At the same time, indigenous short-term responses related to regional aid and cooperation have emerged, particularly in the Gulf countries, which have witnessed soaring revenues from higher energy prices. Alongside more regional frameworks for collaboration on food security, future action to mitigate such food crises should include the strengthening of local sustainable agriculture, storage capacities, and grain procurement strategies from international suppliers.

Abstract:The fight against hunger has been confirmed as a global goal by the UN Agenda 2030 but the war between Russia and Ukraine is expected to create millions of new undernourished due, among others, to its impact on international trade in cereals, especially in wheat and maize. The present note represents a first effort to quantify such impact and its consequences on hunger in developing countries. This is done by (1) identifying the changes in trade flows of wheat and maize caused by the war; (2) computing the resulting variation in each developing country's cereals import openness; and (3) applying the most recent estimates of the relation between cereals import openness and the prevalence of undernourishment provided by the recent literature to obtain the corresponding change in the number of undernourished because of the war. Results show a huge impact on the number of new undernourished, which, however, becomes less dramatic when the analysis is limited to countries where maize or wheat are staples. Along with the Black Sea blockade, the main impact on hunger comes from the bans issued by Ukraine and other economies reacting to the crisis and it particularly hurts people in countries depending on few trading partners.

Abstract:Interstellar molecules preferentially reside in denser, cooler, optically shielded portions of the interstellar medium, but a weak residue of H2 will form via purely gas-phase processes involving H(-) even in rather bare atomic gas, the so-called warm interstellar medium where the temperature (>1000 K) and electron fraction (0.01 to 0.1) are relatively high. Along with H2, a few trace molecules will also form in this gas, partially because strongly endothermic reactions such as C(+) + H2 → CH(+) + H are energetically allowed. The observed abundance patterns of SH(+), CH(+) and OH(+) are reproduced by the warm gas chemistry, but not their overall abundances with respect to hydrogen. Even the very smallest molecular hydrogen fractions observed in the Milky Way along sightlines of low mean density are well above those that can readily be produced in the warm interstellar medium by gas-phase or grain-surface H2 formation processes. This suggests that density inhomogeneities may obscure the molecular contribution of warmer gas.

Abstract:Purpose Considering the importance of Russia and Ukraine in agriculture, the authors quantify the potential impact of the Russia–Ukraine conflict on food output, trade, prices and food security for the world. Design/methodology/approach The authors mainly use the quantitative and structural multi-country and multi-sector general equilibrium trade model to analyze the potential impacts of the conflict on the global food trade pattern and security. Findings First, the authors found that the conflict would lead to soaring agricultural prices, decreasing trade volume and severe food insecurity especially for countries that rely heavily on grain imports from Ukraine and Russia, such as Egypt and Turkey. Second, major production countries such as the United States and Canada may even benefit from the conflict. Third, restrictions on upstream energy and fertilizer will amplify the negative effects of food insecurity. Originality/value This study analyzed the effect of Russia–Ukraine conflict on global food security based on sector linkages and the quantitative general equilibrium trade framework. With a clearer demonstration of the influence about the inherent mechanism based on fewer parameters compared with traditional Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) models, the authors showed integrated impacts of the conflict on food output, trade, prices and welfare across sectors and countries.

Abstract:Purpose - In 2021, Ukraine and Russia exported 12% and 17% of global wheat, being significant grain producers and exporters. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine greatly impacts Ukraine’s wheat production and trade. In this regard, this study examines the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on global food security using the computable general equilibrium approach. Design/Methodology/Approach - We utilized the global multi-sector standard GTAP model, specifically the GTAP Database Version 11, with a base year of 2017. For this research purpose, the original 160 regions and 65 sectors of the GTAP database were aggregated into 23 regions and 24 sectors. Due to the uncertain nature of the conflict duration between Russia and Ukraine, we designed three scenarios: Slight, Medium, and Severe. Each scenario represents varying degrees of wheat production, trade disruption, and an increase in wheat production by third producers for shocks. Findings - The study reveals several effects: real GDP decreases for Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, India, and Georgia, while countries like Egypt, Turkey, Azerbaijan, India, Korea, and Japan experience diminished economic welfare. Russia’s invasion can affect wheat imports of countries like Turkey, India, Mongolia, and Egypt. Ukraine, Egypt, Turkey, and India registered trade surpluses, while others recorded deficits Research Implications - The ongoing conflict complicates assessing long-term consequences on global food security. Policymakers are advised to monitor closely, implement strategies to mitigate disruptions, and foster international collaboration to alleviate adverse effects on trade, economies, and food security, particularly of nations heavily reliant on Ukraine’s wheat exports, like Egypt, Turkey, Mongolia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan.

Abstract:Russia's invasion of Ukraine has threatened global grain supplies as it reduces production and exports while increasing trade costs. While the overall share of Africa's trade with Ukraine and Russia is small, the concentration of imports in products such as wheat, other grains, and fertilizer is critical to food security. This paper investigates the long‐term impacts of the conflict on grain imports and prices in Africa. We use a long‐run general equilibrium trade model to study three scenarios that may evolve as a consequence of the conflict: (1) a heavily reduced Ukrainian production of wheat and other grains; (2) rising trade costs with Ukraine and Russia due to disrupted trade routes in the Black Sea and the sanctions against trading with Russia; and (3) an outright ban on Russian grain export. The model simulations show that the conflict severely affects grain imports, raising local prices for wheat and other grains, with especially strong effects in high import‐dependent countries. That creates risks for food security in some African countries.

Abstract:Under fictitious pretexts, Russia has unleashed an unprovoked war against Ukraine that is spreading beyond our country. One of the most tragic consequences of this war is the intensification of the global problem of hunger. Ukraine and Russia are among the leading suppliers of food to the global market – they account for 25.4% of world wheat exports and 17.6% of coarse grain. Forecasts of declining exports of their grain products have provoked an unprecedented rise in global food prices. The critical dependence of the global food market on Ukrainian agri-food exports has formed in the segment of sunflower oil – Ukraine accounts for almost 50% of the relevant market. As Ukraine’s share in the structure of global sunflower oil production is 30.6%, it is impossible to find a replacement in the short term. Together with the risks of sanctions restrictions on Russian exports, this led to an increase in world prices for sunflower oil from 1,700 to 2,250 dollars for 1 t. Many poor countries that are currently facing a catastrophic food shortage are buyers of Ukrainian grain products – until recently, Ukraine was the main supplier of wheat grain to Ethiopia, Lebanon and Pakistan. Ukraine has been a major supplier of corn grain to China – in 2021 it accounted for 78.3% of Chinese imports of these products. Blocking the export of Ukrainian corn threatens to reduce the number of pigs in China and reduce the production of relevant products. The resumption of Ukrainian agri-food exports in the previous volumes is possible only if the cessation of hostilities, the return of control over all ports and the unblocking of Azov and Black Sea civilian shipping. Because the possibilities of logistics of transport communications on land do not exceed 1 million tons of grain per month. There are grounds for restrained optimism about Ukraine’s domestic food security on the following basis: – the country has stocks of wheat, corn, sunflower oil, basic products for 3-5 years; – according to various forecasts in Ukraine this year is expected to produce cereals and legumes, technical and other crops in sufficient quantities for domestic food supply; – the forced sharp reduction in exports of Ukrainian grain products may lead to its redirection to the feeding of farm animals and increase meat production in areas where there is no fighting.

Abstract:Using global wheat trade data and a network model for shock propagation, we study the impact of the Ukrainian crisis on food security. Depending on the level of reduction in Ukrainian wheat exports, the number of additional individuals falling under the minimum dietary energy requirement varies from 1 to 9 millions, and reaches about 4.8 millions for a $50\%$ reduction in exports. In the most affected countries, supply reductions are mainly related to indirect trade restrictions.

Abstract:The Russian–Ukrainian conflict has been proven to cause significant losses of life and goods on both sides. This may have potentially impacted the agricultural sector. This study examines the impact of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine on the global food situation. We performed a descriptive analysis and literature review to answer this objective. Russia and Ukraine play essential roles in world food production and trade. However, the war has disrupted food production in Ukraine. Estimated Ukrainian wheat, soybean, and maize production in 2022–2023 fell precipitously. On the other hand, Russian production of these three food products shows positive growth during the same period. Furthermore, the global supply chain and food trade are hampered, causing an increase in the world's food prices. From March to May 2022, the average global price of wheat, soybeans, and maize increased dramatically compared to during and before the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, this poses a danger to global food security, particularly for low-income countries that depend heavily on food imports from both countries. Therefore, all countries must be prepared for the possibility that the Sustainable Development Goals cannot be achieved.

Abstract:The study investigates the effects of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the COVID-19 pandemic, and exchange rate fluctuations on the average return, contagion dynamics, and persistence of risks associated with three staples in Türkiye: wheat, sunflower oil, and corn. The pandemic and the war disrupted the grain, oil seed, and fertilizer supply from Russia and Ukraine to Türkiye and several Middle Eastern and African countries, risking food insecurity. The specified VECM-Asymmetric BEKK-MGARCH model estimation uses data from January 2010 to May 2023. Results show that over time, short-term deviations move towards long-term equilibrium. The presence of reciprocal causality among wheat, corn, and sunflower oil prices underscores their mutual influence. The volatility pass-through between wheat, sunflower oil, and corn shows asymmetric transmission. Long-term uncertainty stemming from one market exacerbates that market's uncertainty but mitigates risks affecting other markets. The volatility can be reduced through domestic production expansion through comprehensive policies enhancing rural area development, assuring farmer access to inputs, and implementing market risk mitigating measures. Results also show that the effects of the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war have been amplified by exchange rate fluctuations. Market risk mitigation could involve the agricultural exchange to support an expanded number of licensed grain warehouses. In a broader scholarly context, this study stresses the interaction between global shocks, market uncertainty, and safeguarding the nation's food security.

Oil Price Shochs'S Asymmetric Responses on Food Inflation in Middle East and North Africa Countries in the time of Ukraine-Russia Crisis

Abstract:The war between Russia and Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, and it has lasted for more than a year. The world economy has been negatively influenced by the war and the series of events that followed it in a number of ways, including the stock market, and trade. The energy market and food prices have seen a significant decline. This empirical study examined the unequal effects of oil price shocks on food inflation in MENA countries during the Russian aggression using a Panel Asymmetric Granger Causality Test and a Non-linear Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model. Empirical evidence demonstrated the asymmetry between the inflation of food and oil, with the majority of the effects of oil price shocks being positive on food inflation. The empirical data supporting the short- and long-term asymmetries in food and oil prices was revealed, with the majority of the evidence pointing to the beneficial impacts of oil price shocks on food inflation. Additionally, the estimations indicated that the food prices rose in both eras (after the war between Russia and Ukraine and when the complete sample was chosen) in response to increases in the price of oil.
Predicting the Potential Impact of Emergency on Global Grain Security: A Case of the Russia–Ukraine Conflict

Abstract:Global emergencies have a profound impact on exacerbating food insecurity, and the protracted Russia–Ukraine conflict has emerged as a significant driver of a global food crisis. Accurately quantifying the impact of this conflict is crucial for achieving sustainable development goals. The multi-indicator comprehensive evaluation approach was used to construct a grain security composite index (GSCI). Moreover, econometric model was used to predict the potential impacts of the conflict on global grain security in 2030 under two scenarios: with and without the "Russia-Ukraine conflict". The results conclude that global food prices reached unprecedented levels as a consequence of the conflict, leading to notable fluctuations in food prices, especially with a significant surge in wheat prices. The conflict had a negative impact on global grain security, resulting in a decline in grain security from 0.538 to 0.419. Predictions indicate that the influence of the conflict on global grain security will be substantially greater compared to the scenario without the conflict in 2023–2030, ranging from 0.033 to 0.13. Furthermore, grain security will first decrease and then increase under the sustained consequences of the conflict. The achievement of the 2030 sustainable development goals will encounter significant challenges in light of these circumstances.
