Abstract:Background: Short videos play a key role in the process of tourism destination promotion, and attractive short videos can bring tourist flow and economic income growth to tourist attractions. Many tourist attractions in China have achieved remarkable success through short video promotion. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the behavioral characteristics of short video users browsing short tourism videos and explore what factors of short video affected users' tourism intention. This study also compared which factors were most important in triggering users' tourism intention in marketing communication via short tourism videos in order to shed light on tourism destination strategy and facilitate adaptation to market development trends. Methods: This study developed a conceptual model by extending the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) model with technology acceptance factors (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use) and short video factors (perceived enjoyment, perceived professionalism, perceived interactivity) to examine users' tourism intention. A convenience random sampling technique was used to distribute the questionnaire in Chinese city of Nanjing. Four hundred twenty-one respondents participated in the questionnaire, with 395 providing valid data. Results: The results of the SEM analysis show that all posed hypotheses (Perceived professionalism - > Telepresence, Perceived interactivity - > Telepresence, Perceived enjoyment - > Telepresence, Perceived ease of use - > Telepresence, Perceived enjoyment - > Flow experience, Perceived ease of use - > Flow experience, Telepresence - > Flow experience, Telepresence - > Tourism intention, Flow experience - > Tourism intention) are confirmed except for (Perceived usefulness - > Tourism intention), which is not confirmed. Conclusion: The findings of this study will help fill the gap in previous research on the relationship between short video influencing factors and users' tourism intention, thus contributing to the academic research on emerging short videos and the endorsement of destinations promoted by technological innovation.

Abstract:Social media short videos represent a powerful tool for tourism destination promotion. However, little research has investigated their effect on tourist travel intentions. Drawing on the construal level theory and the elaboration likelihood model, this study investigates the interactive effects between visual and verbal framing of promotional tourism short video on travel intention through two scenario-based experiments. Study 1 examined the interaction effect between visual perspective and visual content. The results indicated that the match between first-person ( versus third-person) perspective and activity-centric ( versus site-centric) content fosters higher travel intention through enhancing imagery fluency. Study 2 further examined the moderating role of narration message appeal and revealed that first-person perspective with activity-centric content leads to higher travel intention when paired with rational ( versus emotional) narration messages, with affect intensity playing a significant mediating role. These findings contribute to knowledge on short video marketing and provide valuable insights for tourism marketers.

Abstract:<p>Short videos have been increasingly in demand recently while also holding promise for tourism marketing. Many destination management organizations have tried to make short videos by shooting the grand landscapes of a destination. However, the effective video characteristics and internal processes of potential tourists while watching such short videos remain unclear. We propose that a short video's narrative aspect can influence destination brand attitude. Accordingly, we developed this study around narrative transportation theory, and extended the antecedent and consequence variables of narrative transportation. We investigated two main questions, as follows: 1) Can narrative short videos have a positive effect in tourism marketing? and 2) What is the mechanism underlying the development of narrative transportation? The effect of narrative transportation, sense of presence, and psychological reactance in short narrative videos on destination brand attitude were investigated. We analyzed data from 408 participants using structural equation modeling analysis. The results indicated that the narrative of short videos promotes brand attitude, and that this effect is achieved by lessening individuals' psychological reactance to official advertisements and providing them with an immersive experience that delivers the sense of presence. These results not only add to the research on the use of narrative in short videos, but also indicate that short videos could be an effective marketing strategy for destinations.</p>

Abstract:Tourism short video has a huge impact on the development of the tourism industry. More and more individual tourism industry, enterprises and institutions have entered the short video platform and use short video to carry out marketing and publicity. Based on the heart flow theory, this study studied the influence of short video on tourism behavior intention by questionnaire survey. The results show that the information and entertainment of short tourism video positively influence the intention of tourism behavior through the mediation effect of happiness, and the interactivity and customization have a direct positive influence on the influence of tourism behavior. Finally, this study proposes corresponding countermeasures based on the results.

Abstract:Journal of Vacation Marketing, Ahead of Print. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the effects of "user-generated travel short videos" (UGTSV; visual effect, musical effect, culture and activity effect, pop effect) on familiarity and involvement with destinations, in relation to any further intention to visit a destination. Drawing on stimulus organism response theory, this research used an online survey design to evaluate tourists' perception of three targeted travel short videos. The data from 646 respondents were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and regression analysis. The results demonstrate that, except for the musical effect, all other short video effects significantly affect the level of familiarity, as well as behavioral involvement with a UGTSV destination. In addition, both tourist familiarity and behavioral involvement significantly affect their visit intentions. These findings enrich our understanding of UGTSV-induced tourism and help destination managers to develop marketing strategies utilizing short videos to attract potential tourists.

Abstract:The rise of short videos and the development of self-media in recent years have complemented each other. Through the recording and sharing of self-media creators, colorful short videos have provided new opportunities for promoting tourism destinations. However, the current academic research on tourism destinations from the perspective of short video communication is relatively fragmented, and the impact of short videos as a communication medium on the main body of tourism consumption remains unclear. Therefore, this paper focuses on young people, who are the primary audience of short videos, and investigates the influence of short videos on their travel intentions within the context of self-media, employing the "S-O-R" theory. The research methodology involves conducting a questionnaire survey, and the collected data is analyzed and processed using multivariate statistical methods such as SPSS and AMOS. The findings reveal that traveler perception serves as a mediating factor between self-media short videos and travel intentions. Moreover, the openness, interactivity, and vividness of self-media short videos not only enhance youth travel intentions but also have a positive impact on traveler perception. In light of these results, tourism destinations should capitalize on current trends, leverage short videos as a powerful promotional tool, innovate promotional methods, explore tourism resources in depth, showcase the unique features of tourist destinations, expand their influence, and maximize the promotion of travel intentions among tourists.

Abstract:Tourist-generated short videos (TGSVs) have increasingly contributed to the popularity of destinations among Chinese people with rapidly rising numbers of them making and watching short videos. The core characteristics of TGSVs include being short in time extent and amusement-oriented. Watching TGSVs makes audiences feel that the place and travel style in the videos are close to their life. Therefore, it is hypothesised that the videos are perceived to be trustworthy and to prompt aspirations to travel. The present research explored the capacity of TGSVs to improve travel intentions through studying authenticity perceptions and multi-dimensional travel motivations. Mixed methods were employed. Firstly, three authenticity-relevant themes, including authentic video content, authentic producer, and authentic self, emerged from a content analysis of 186 reviews of TGSVs. Secondly, a scale measuring the perceived authenticity among video audiences was developed as the tool for further study, based on 155 valid online surveys. Thirdly, quasi-experiments involving 32 participants were conducted to verify the impacts of short videos. Higher levels of authenticity perception, travel motivations, and intention to visit Iceland were manifested among participants watching a TGSV, compared with those watching an official destination marketing video of the same temporal length. The findings facilitate a better understanding of the ways in which convenient channels available on mobile phone are influencing Chinese tourist behaviours. The present research is significant for the online marketing strategies of destination management organisations.

Abstract:Purpose Short-form videos have gradually become important marketing tools for tourist destinations. However, chaotic sources and homogenized content have led to poor user experiences. Taking Kulangsu and Xi'an City Wall in China as examples, this study explored the influence of matching short-form video sources with destination types on user engagement and visit intention. Design/methodology/approach This study selected three short-form videos from different sources for each destination on TikTok and conducted an empirical research using a 3 × 2 experimental design to examine the proposed research model. Findings The results showed that the matching effect between short-form video sources and destination types will positively affect user engagement and visit intention. (1) the short-form videos with user-generated content (UGC) or professional user-generated content (PUGC) in hedonic destinations can obtain higher user engagement and visit intention; (2) the short-form videos with professionally generated content (PGC) or PUGC in utilitarian destinations can obtain higher user engagement and visit intention and (3) perceived credibility and perceived usefulness played mediating roles in these interactions. Originality/value This study considers short-form video sources as antecedent variables influencing user engagement and visit intention and confirms the matching effect between short-form video sources and tourism destination types. The findings will help researchers and marketers better understand the impact of short-form video on destination marketing.

Abstract:ABSTRACT More and more destinations are using short videos with Internet celebrities to attract tourists through social media. Building upon the attention-interest-desire-action model (AIDA), this study investigates the influence of the content (creativity and authenticity) of destination short videos on audiences’ emotions (awe and enjoyment), and awe and enjoyment further influence audiences’ attitudes toward videos and destinations, considering the moderating effect of parasocial interaction. Data were collected by systematic sampling and analyzed by PLS-SEM. The results indicated that creativity and authenticity have a positive influence on awe and enjoyment, and authenticity has a greater influence on emotions than creativity. Awe and enjoyment have a positive influence on the attitude toward the short video, which further influences the attitude toward travel to the destination. In addition, parasocial positively moderates the relationship between awe and attitude toward the video and negatively moderates the relationship between enjoyment and attitude toward the video. The study contributes to destination marketing literature by revealing the underlying mechanism of how the content of destination short videos shapes audiences’ attitudes. In addition, suggestions are provided on how destinations can develop effective destination short videos to attract potential tourists.

Abstract:Journal of Travel Research, Ahead of Print. How destinations use tourism short videos to stand out in the fierce digital market is crucial. Based on the "cognitive-affective-conative" theoretical model, this study investigates the differential effects and mechanisms of tourism short video message appeal on users' travel intention by conducting three experiments. The findings show that: emotional appeal (vs. rational appeal) is more likely to stimulate users' travel intention, and telepresence, interest arousal and attitude toward the destination play the mediating roles. Moreover, high-narrative tourism short videos have stronger emotional appeal effects on users' telepresence and travel intention. However, there was no significant difference in the effect of the two message appeals in low-narrative tourism short videos. This study reveals the differential influences of various message appeals, highlights the synergistic and complementary effects of interest arousal and attitude toward the destination, and provides practical insights to design attractive tourism videos.

Abstract:This research discusses the impact of the perception of video images and online word of mouth on tourists’ travel intentions. A survey of 390 users who watched travel videos on short-video platforms was conducted using structural equation modeling. The results are as follows. First, the perception of video images can significantly affect tourists’ intention to visit the destinations. Second, as a mediating variable, online word of mouth can enhance the positive effects of the perception of video images on tourists’ travel intentions. Third, gender had a positive moderating effect, which was particularly obvious in the relationship between the perception of video images and online word of mouth. This research provides a theoretical basis for the utility of tourism-related short videos, which can help stimulate tourists’ intention to visit promoted destinations.

Abstract:The advent of short video apps like Douyin has greatly popularized the practice of sharing travel experiences in the form of live-streaming or prerecorded videos. With the breakout of COVID-19, the feasibility and appeal of physical travel were substantially undermined such that people now become increasingly dependent on watching short videos as a means of consuming travel-related content. This revolutionary change in the landscape of destination marketing is reshaping the tourism industry, which calls for research efforts of both scholars and practitioners. Our study aimed to investigate how two major characteristics of tourism-themed short videos, namely, level of novelty and camera angle, influence viewers' behavioral intentions toward actually visiting the places, with the incorporation of several relevant psychological mediators, including immersion, positive surprise, spatial presence, and perceptual realism. A 2 (low- vs. high-level novelty) × 2 (first- vs. third-person view) factorial experiment was designed and conducted. Statistical analysis based on a sample of 480 participants suggested that the perception of positive surprise increased with the level of novelty contained in the videos, which was positively associated with viewers' visit intentions in an indirect manner. Moreover, compared to the third-person view, employing the first-person view to film sites and scenes produced a greater sense of immersion, which in turn stimulated interest in taking a tour. This study contributes to the growing body of research in digital travel and telepresence.

Abstract:Despite the increasing popularity of short video platforms (SVPs) in tourism, there has been a lack of integrated theoretical understanding regarding the mechanism of how SVP users' perceptions of social media influencers (SMIs) and quality of SVPs influence their intention to visit the destination. By combining social learning theory and the technology acceptance model (TAM), this study investigated the effectiveness of SVPs in terms of source credibility of SMIs and the quality of SVPs in inducing travel intention via attitude. Analyses with a sample of 454 respondents revealed that perceived expertise of SMIs in SVPs positively influenced attitude toward the destination. Additionally, perceived usefulness and enjoyment of short travel videos positively influenced attitude toward SVPs. Attitude toward SVPs was positively linked to attitude toward destination. Both attitudes, in turn, led to travel intention. The study also revealed that parasocial interaction moderated the relationships between perceived attractiveness and expertise and attitude toward the destination. Destination marketing organizations (DMOs) and tourism marketers are advised to focus on utilizing SMIs who show expertise and featuring informative and enjoyable videos on SVPs for their destination promotion.

Abstract:This study found that the impact of domestic urban short video on college students tourism behavior is mainly concentrated in four aspects: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, tourism attitude and tourism behavior. In order to study this influence relationship more accurately, the author proposes a model based on the influence mechanism of urban short video, which includes the above four independent variables, in order to obtain better research results. By combining network research and questionnaire survey, it is found that urban short video has a significant impact on college students tourism behavior, especially in improving college students tourism decision-making effect and stimulating tourism interest. In order to better promote the development of urban short video and college students tourism industry, this paper puts forward some countermeasures and suggestions. It is hoped that this study can provide new perspectives and inspirations for urban short video producers and college students tourism industry, and provide some suggestions for promoting sustainable development and innovation in related fields.

Abstract:Short-form travel videos are popular, but the process of audience involvement while watching remains unclear. This study explores audience involvement along with expressions of travel intention and introduces the concepts of destination image and psychological distance to construct a structural model. A total of 487 questionnaires were used for structural equation model testing. Results show that audience involvement has a positive impact on the destination’s cognitive and affective image, ultimately leading to travel intention. Meanwhile, the destination’s cognitive and affective image play a partial mediating role between the influencing mechanisms. Moreover, psychological distance has a negative moderating effect between audience involvement and travel intention, and on audience involvement and cognitive image. However, it has no significant moderating effect on both audience involvement and affective image. The results provide a broader research perspective for the development of short-form travel videos and provide important implications for destination marketing.

Abstract:Drawn upon Telepresence theory, this study aims to identify the relationships between existential authenticity, celebrity attachment, telepresence, and travel intention in the short video experience. Survey results show that existential authenticity fosters user attachment to celebrity and then travel intention, but has no impact on telepresence which is also not related to travel intention; Furthermore, celebrity attachment enhances travel intention. Although existential authenticity has no effect on telepresence, celebrity attachment mediates the relationship between existential authenticity and telepresence. This study offers insights to both scholars and practitioners, informing strategies for enhancing destination competitiveness through TikTok marketing campaigns.

Abstract:Short tourism videos (STVs) can significantly boost the visibility and appeal of tourist destinations, increase tourism revenue, and yield positive social responsibility effects such as poverty alleviation. One notable achievement is that of Liu Hong, the Director of the Culture and Tourism Bureau in Garzê , who has become an Internet celebrity by successfully promoting Garzê 's cultural and tourism resources via his TikTok account with 156 STVs. This study aims to analyze and uncover the characteristics of effective STVs in promoting sustainable tourism and conservation. The STVs were classified into four narrative categories: recommendation-based, introduction-based, display-based, and activity-based. The findings revealed that among the 25 highly engaged STVs, display-based STVs were dominant, accounting for 68%. Comparing short video length, number of scenes, subtitles, background music, and number of characters in association with engagement metrics, revealed that display-based STVs are usually less expensive and require fewer resources to produce. This suggests that destination management organizations can leverage display-based STVs to engage netizens and promote tourist destinations. These findings help promote remote tourism destinations with smaller marketing budgets, fostering sustainable tourism practices, and conserving natural and cultural heritage. The study helps DMOs aiming to use STVs for effective and sustainable destination marketing.

Abstract:As the tourism industry recovers post-COVID-19, tourism short videos have emerged as a vital marketing tool. This study explores their impact on online customer citizenship behavior, providing valuable insights for marketers and destination managers to attract tourists and promote sustainable tourism. A survey method was employed, yielding 280 valid responses. Data were analyzed using SPSS Process and AMOS, with CFA for measurement validation and SEM to examine causal relationships. Consequently, by analyzing the effects of talents (emotional and informational support) and good looks (appearance charm), We found that informational and emotional support, along with vlogger appearance charm, significantly boost perceived value and online customer citizenship behavior. Perceived value mediates the relationship between these factors and customer behavior, showing that well-crafted tourism short videos can promote online civic engagement. This study enriches theoretical research on tourism marketing and offers practical insights for enhancing customer citizenship behavior through compelling video content.

Abstract:Abstract Although celebrity endorsements and promotional videos dominated by destination marketing organizations (DMOs) are critical in travel decision-making and destination marketing, as a new type of endorsement, the impact of internet celebrities’ short travel videos on social platforms remains not well understood. To bridge this gap, the current study applied source credibility theory and the match-up hypothesis to construct a conceptual model for examining the impact of internet celebrity endorsements on audiences’ visit intentions. FangQi Kiki, a typical producer of short travel videos on TikTok, was used as a case study. 649 valid samples were taken from respondents who were asked to complete a questionnaire after watching a short video. The results showed that internet celebrities’ trustworthiness and expertise significantly affect audiences’ visit intentions. However, attractiveness in terms of the physical characteristics of internet celebrities and internet celebrity–destination congruence had no significant effect on audiences’ visit intentions. The implications show that “Appearance Fallacy” exists in online influencers’ marketing, and physical appearance may affect the popularity of short travel videos online, but it has no significant effect on promoting destination marketing. Unlike the celebrity effect in conventional endorsements, internet celebrities’ short videos belong to content marketing, where popular content is more important than an internet celebrity’s personality. This research adds to the body of knowledge concerned with internet celebrity endorsements in tourism, providing valuable insights for DMOs to project short video marketing.
