Abstract:Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemically and thermally stable due to the presence of carbon-fluorine (C-F) bond in their molecular structures, hence have been previously formulated as firefighting in-gredients. During the firefighting process, however, owing to the high temperature, PFAS can be potentially degraded, particularly for PFAS precursors that contain non-C-F bonds, which is studied herein by exposing PFAS-contaminated soil in a muffle furnace oven. Different temperatures and time intervals are applied to the real soil sample to mimic the firing process and to evaluate the degradation and conversion of PFAS. This thermal treatment can not only degrade precursors (e.g. 6:2 fluorotelomer sulphonate), but also degrade perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCA, e.g. perfluorooctanoic acid PFOA) and perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSA, e.g. perfluorooctane sulfonate PFOS). The concentration dependence of the PFAS on temperature and time is fitted using a 2D Gaussian surface to simulate the complex thermal kinetic, and to compare with the traditional approach such as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) (1D dependence on temperature only). The 2D simulation can directly visu-alise the thermal kinetic of individual or sum PFAS in the complex temperature-time plane, which depends on the sample background and particularly on the coexist PFAS precursors. Overall, this study provides a simple approach to monitor and optimise the thermal treatment of the PFAS-contaminated soil.

Abstract:Ultrasound (US) can degrade per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by the cavitation or pyrolysis effect. In this study, we find that the US equipment typically used in a common laboratory, such as 20 kHz and 43 kHz for cleaning or homogenisation, can degrade PFAS, although the process is slow (with approximately 14.6% and 20.1% defluorination after 6 h, respectively). To accelerate the degradation process, a dual-frequency US is combined with persulfate (PS) to synergistically degrade PFAS in water and soil. Typical PFAS including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (6:2 FTS) are used to evaluate the degradation performance of dual-frequency US/PS in water. After 6 h of degradation, the defluorination percentage is, from highest to lowest, PFOA (100 +/- 1.2%) > 6:2 FTS (86.9 +/- 0.9%) > PFOS (46.5 +/- 1.0%). Interestingly, the dual-frequency US/PS process can also efficiently degrade PFAS in the contaminated soil, with a 62-71% degradation of 14 PFAS (28 is the maximum number of PFAS that can be quantitatively monitored), representing an encouraging progress. Finally, the degradation pathways and kinetics of PFOA are studied by monitoring the degradation intermediates, and by indicating the combination of the dual-frequency US/PS is not simply addition with each other, but with a synergistic effect of degradation.
Burning questions: Current practices and critical gaps in evaluating removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) during pyrolysis treatments of biosolids

Abstract:Concerns surrounding potential health and environmental impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are growing at tremendous rates because adverse health impacts are expected with trace-level exposures. Extreme measures are required to mitigate potential PFAS contamination and minimize exposures. Extensive PFAS use results in the release of diverse PFAS species from domestic, industrial, and municipal effluents to wastewater, which partition to biosolids throughout secondary treatment. Biosolids generated during municipal wastewater treatment are a major environmental source of PFAS due to prevailing disposal practices as fertilizers. Pyrolysis is emerging as a viable, scalable technology for PFAS removal from biosolids while retaining nutrients and generating renewable, raw materials for energy generation. Despite early successes of pyrolysis in PFAS removal, significant unknowns remain about PFAS and transformation product fates in pyrolysis products and emissions. Applicable PFAS sampling methods, analytical workflows, and removal assessments are currently limited to a subset of high-interest analytes and matrices. Further, analysis of exhaust gases, particulate matter, fly ashes, and other pyrolysis end-products remain largely unreported or limited due to cost and sampling limitations. This paper identifies critical knowledge gaps on the pyrolysis of biosolids that must be addressed to assess the effectiveness of PFAS removal during pyrolysis treatment.
Emerging technologies for PFOS/PFOA degradation and removal: A review

Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are highly recalcitrant anthropogenic chemicals that are ubiquitously present in the environment and are harmful to humans. Typical water and wastewater treatment processes (coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration) are proven to be largely ineffective, while adsorption with granular activated carbon (GAC) has been the chief option to capture them from aqueous sources followed by incineration. However, this process is time-consuming, and produces additional solid waste and air pollution. Treatment methods for PFOS and PFOA generally follow two routes: (1) removal from source and reduce the risk; (2) degradation. Emerging technologies focusing on degradation are critically reviewed in this contribution. Various processes such as bioremediation, electrocoagulation, foam fractionation, sonolysis, photocatalysis, mechanochemical, electrochemical degradation, beams of electron and plasma have been developed and studied in the past decade to address PFAS crisis. The underlying mechanisms of these PFAS degradation methods have been categorized. Two main challenges have been identified, namely complexity in large scale operation and the release of toxic byproducts. Based on the literature survey, we have provided a strength-weakness-opportunity-threat (SWOT) analysis and quantitative rating on their efficiency, environmental impact and technology readiness.

Abstract:Perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of synthetic organic chemicals whose structures contain fully or partially fluorinated carbon chains with different chain lengths and functional groups, and have been widely used since they were first synthesized in the 1940 s. Their unique fluorine-carbon bonds provide exceptional thermal and chemical stability, rendering them highly persistent in the environment, often referred to as 'forever chemicals' in contemporary scientific literature. PFAS have been found to have adverse effects on human health and environmental quality. PFAS degradation hinges on the disruption of carbon-carbon and carbon-fluorine bonds. This review delineates the degradation technologies of PFAS, including chemical oxidation, chemical reduction, ultrasonication, photolysis, electrochemistry, thermal degradation, mechanochemistry and microbial degradation. It offers a comparative analysis of these eight technologies based on degradation efficiency, defluorination efficiency, and degradation rate. Among these technologies, mechanochemical transformation is emerging as a promising approach in detoxifying PFAS. Mechanochemical treatment can be achieved at ambient temperature and pressure by the high-energy milling of the polluted materials. Future work should focus on the scaleup and economics of the advanced treatment technologies to treat and remediate PFAS and other highly recalcitrant pollutants.

Abstract:Numerous studies have demonstrated the degradation of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by advanced oxidation or reduction processes. Howbeit, the current literature lacks a comprehensive and comparative overview of the various degradation pathways and mechanisms. This systematic review compiles and analyzes the mechanisms and degradation pathways of PFAS by persulfate activation, photocatalysis, UV/sulfite, electron beam, electrochemical oxidation, plasma, ozonation, and sonochemical oxidation. We found that the degradation pathways of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and Perfluoroalkanesulfonic acids (PFSAs) were investigated more than any other PFAS. This review implies that the defluorination and degradation pathways of PFAS are reliant on the type of dominant reactive oxidant or reductive species. For instance, holes usually oxidize PFAS to unstable perfluoroalkyl radicals accompanied by losing head groups, whereas hydroxyl and superoxide radicals cleave CC and C-F bonds. On the other hand, hydrated electrons directly eliminate the head group followed by releasing CF 2 units. Furthermore, the imposed crystal facets and functional groups of the introduced catalytic surfaces in the case of heterogeneous catalysis (e.g., photocatalysts) affected the degradation pathways and defluorination rates by anchoring PFAS molecules from the head groups (e.g., carboxylate and sulfonate group). This study lays the groundwork for future research to analyze and elucidate the transformation products and pathways of PFAS in various treatment systems.

Abstract:Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic organic chemicals extensively used in consumer and industrial applications over the past decades. The current literature lacks a comprehensive review of the mechanisms and degradation pathways of long- and short-chain PFASs. The overall concentration of perfluorobutanoic acid in aquatic systems ranged from 1.15 to 6280 ng/L, while perfluorobutane sulfonic acid varied from 0.01 to 4520 ng/L. Prior to 2015, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) concentrations in wastewater treatment facilities ranged from 92 to 66,000 ng/L, while levels decreased after 2015 (3–100 ng/L) as PFAS production decreased. This systematic literature review compiles the latest evidence of the mechanism and pathway degradation of emerging technologies, such as advanced oxidation processes, membrane separation, adsorption, and biological transformation of PFAS, which were reviewed comprehensively. Bibliometric assessment was performed using keyword-based search criteria, and network maps were created using VOS Viewer. Activated carbon showed >90 % elimination of long-chain PFAS. Nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes were observed to be effective for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid and PFOA removal, with rejection efficiencies of >99 % in aqueous matrices with different membrane materials. Pilot scale studies showed that granular activated carbon and biosolid-based biochar sorbed more than 80 % of long-chain PFAS and 19–27 % of short-chain PFAS. Short-chain precursors like fluorotelomers degrade 60–100 % more effectively with mixed microbial strain cultures. Two main challenges have been identified: (a) Operational complexity on a large scale and the transformation of toxic byproducts, and (b) Emerging technologies have certain removal effects on short-chain PFASs.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are Synthetic Organic Compounds (SOCs) which are of current concern as they are linked to a myriad of adverse health effects in mammals. They can be found in drinking water, rivers, groundwater, wastewater, household dust, and soils. In this review, the current challenge and status of bioremediation of PFAs in soils was examined. While several technologies to remove PFAS from soil have been developed, including adsorption, filtration, thermal treatment, chemical oxidation/reduction and soil washing, these methods are expensive, impractical for in situ treatment, use high pressures and temperatures, with most resulting in toxic waste. Biodegradation has the potential to form the basis of a cost-effective, large scale in situ remediation strategy for PFAS removal from soils. Both fungal and bacterial strains have been isolated that are capable of degrading PFAS; however, to date, information regarding the mechanisms of degradation of PFAS is limited. Through the application of new technologies in microbial ecology, such as stable isotope probing, metagenomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics there is the potential to examine and identify the biodegradation of PFAS, a process which will underpin the development of any robust PFAS bioremediation technology.

Abstract:<p>Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a class of artificial compounds comprised of a perfluoroalkyl main chain and a terminal functional group. With them being applied in a wide range of applications, PFASs have drawn increasing regulatory attention and research interests on their reductions and treatments due to their harmful effects on environment and human beings. Among numerous studies, chemical treatments (e.g., photochemical, electrochemical, and thermal technologies) have been proved to be important methods to degradation PFASs. However, the pathways and mechanisms for the degradation of PFASs through these chemical methods still have not been well documented. This article therefore provides a comprehensive review on the degradation mechanisms of two important PFASs (perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS)) with photochemical, electrochemical and thermal methods. Different decomposition mechanisms of PFOA and PFOS are reviewed and discussed. Overall, the degradation pathways of PFASs are associated closely with their head groups and chain lengths, and H/F exchange and chain shortening were found to be predominant degradation mechanisms. The clear study on the degradation mechanisms of PFOA and PFOS should be very useful for the complete degradation or mineralization of PFASs in the future.</p>

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been used in a variety of consumer and industrial products and are known to accumulate in sewage sludge due to sorption and their recalcitrant nature. Treatment processes ensure safe and high-quality biosolids by reducing the potential for adverse environmental impacts such as pathogen levels; however, they have yet to be evaluated for their impact on the fate of PFAS. The objective of this study was to compare PFAS concentrations in four commercially available biosolid-based products that received different types of treatments: heat treatment, composting, blending, and thermal hydrolysis. Seventeen perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) were quantified using liquid chromatography with tandem quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry followed by screening for 30 PFAA precursors. Treatment processes did not reduce PFAA loads except for blending, which served only to dilute concentrations. Several PFAA precursors were identified with 6:2 and 8:2 fluorotelomer phosphate diesters in all samples pre- and post-treatment. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Heat treatment and composting increased perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) concentrations. Only dilution from blending with non-PFAS material decreased PFAA concentrations. Thermal hydrolysis process had no apparent effect on PFAA concentrations. PFAS sources are a greater driver of PFAS loads in biosolid-based products than treatment processes.

Abstract:Aqueous film-forming foam, used in firefighting, and biowastes, including biosolids, animal and poultry manures, and composts, provide a major source of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) input to soil. Large amounts of biowastes are added to soil as a source of nutrients and carbon. They also are added as soil amendments to improve soil health and crop productivity. Plant uptake of PFAS through soil application of biowastes is a pathway for animal and human exposure to PFAS. The complexity of PFAS mixtures, and their chemical and thermal stability, make remediation of PFAS in both solid and aqueous matrices challenging. Remediation of PFAS in biowastes, as well as soils treated with these biowastes, can be achieved through preventing and decreasing the concentration of PFAS in biowaste sources (i.e., prevention through source control), mobilization of PFAS in contaminated soil and subsequent removal through leaching (i.e., soil washing) and plant uptake (i.e., phytoremediation), sorption of PFAS, thereby decreasing their mobility and bioavailability (i.e., immobilization), and complete removal through thermal and chemical oxidation (i.e., destruction). In this review, the distribution, bioavailability, and remediation of PFAS in soil receiving solid biowastes, which include biosolids, composts, and manure, are presented.

Understanding the impact of pre-digestion thermal hydrolysis process on PFAS in anaerobically digested biosolids

Abstract:Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) present in biosolids are influenced by their source, treatment processes, and the dynamics of water resource recovery facilities (WRRF). Understanding these effects is vital for informed decisions in treatment process selection, however, comprehensive studies are sparse. This study examined the impact of anaerobic digestion (AD) and the addition of a thermal hydrolysis process (THP) before AD on PFAS in the solids stream at a WRRF. Targeted analysis of 58 PFAS (linear and branched) and suspect screening of the solid stream before and after AD as well as THP, with the total PFAS (ΣPFAS) concentrations ranging between 244 and 566 μg/kgdw. Precursor and intermediate PFAS, mainly di-substituted polyfluoroalkyl phosphate esters (diPAPs) followed by fluorotelomer carboxylic acids (FTCAs), were the dominant contributors (62-96 mol % ΣPFAS) in all 5 sample types. AD impacts were observed both before and after deploying THP altering the relative contribution of different PFAS classes through biotransformation, with an increase in PFCAs and a decrease in diPAPs. However, we observed that THP reduced the % of precursor conversion as well as conversion of the FTCA intermediates in the AD process as evidenced by a substantial increase in FTCAs post-THP + AD and lower PFCA generation compared to AD only. Total PFAS organofluorine (∑FPFAS) decreased by 28% pre- and post-AD, which on total fluorine (TF) showed a larger reduction to 43%. Fluoride was <3% of the TF in all cases, thus, the greater reduction in TF vs ∑FPFAS could be volatile losses of PFAS and other non-PFAS F-containing molecules. After THP installation, a 32% decrease in (∑FPFAS) was observed in the combined THP-AD system whereas adjusted total organofluorine increased by ∼43%. Overall, achieving higher solids handling capacity and energy neutrality with the THP addition did not lead to a significant difference in quantifiable PFAS concentrations compared to AD-only.

The Science of The Total Environment

Abstract:A group of fluorinated organic molecules known as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been commonly produced and circulated in the environment. PFAS, owing to multiple strong C F bonds, exhibit exceptional stability and possess a high level of resistance against biological or chemical degradation . Recently, PFAS have been identified to cause numerous hazardous effects on the biotic ecosystem. As a result, extensive efforts have been made in recent years to develop effective methods to remove PFAS. Adsorption, filtration, heat treatment, chemical oxidation/reduction, and soil washing are a few of the physicochemical techniques that have shown their ability to remove PFAS from contaminated matrixes. However these methods also carry significant drawbacks, including the fact that they are expensive, energy-intensive, unsuitable for in-situ treatment, and requirement to be carried under dormant conditions. The metabolic products released upon PFAS degradation are largely unknown, despite the fact that thermal disintegration methods are widely used. In contrast to physical and chemical methods, biological degradation of PFAS has been regarded as efficient method. However, PFAS are difficult to instantly and completely metabolize through biological methods due to the limitations of biocatalytic mechanisms. Nevertheless, cost, easy-to-operate and environmentally safe are some of the advantages over its counterpart. The present review comprehensively discusses the occurrence of PFAS, the state-of-the science of remediation technologies and approaches applied, and the remediation challenges. The article also focuses on the future research directions toward the development of effective methods for PFAS-contaminated site in-situ treatment.

Abstract:Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals, which are introduced to the environment through anthropogenic activities. Aqueous film forming foam used in firefighting, wastewater effluent, landfill leachate, and biosolids are major sources of PFAS input to soil and groundwater. Remediation of PFAS contaminated solid and aqueous media is challenging, which is attributed to the chemical and thermal stability of PFAS and the complexity of PFAS mixtures. In this review, remediation of PFAS contaminated soils through manipulation of their bioavailability and destruction is presented. While the mobilizing amendments (e.g., surfactants) enhance the mobility and bioavailability of PFAS, the immobilizing amendments (e.g., activated carbon) decrease their bioavailability and mobility. Mobilizing amendments can be applied to facilitate the removal of PFAS though soil washing, phytoremediation, and complete destruction through thermal and chemical redox reactions. Immobilizing amendments are likely to reduce the transfer of PFAS to food chain through plant and biota (e.g., earthworm) uptake, and leaching to potable water sources. Future studies should focus on quantifying the potential leaching of the mobilized PFAS in the absence of removal by plant and biota uptake or soil washing, and regular monitoring of the long-term stability of the immobilized PFAS.

Abstract:Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals, which reach terrestrial and aquatic environments through anthropogenic activities. Major sources of PFAS in the environment include fire-fighting foams (aqueous film forming foam (AFFF)), wastewater sources, biosolids, and composts. Limited information is available about PFAS in wastewater, which is the focus of this review. PFAS wastewater sources include domestic effluents, industrial effluents, landfill leachates, stormwater, and agricultural effluents through their use in various applications. Land application of PFAS-contaminated wastewater can lead to the contamination of soil and groundwater, thereby reaching the food chain through plant uptake and consumption of potable water. Landfill leachates and industrial effluents contain the highest concentrations of PFAS, posing serious risks to surrounding waterways. Transformation of PFAS precursors can occur through abiotic and biotic processes within the treatment of wastewater, resulting in the formation of harmful PFAS compounds. Currently, there is limited data reported on novel short-chain and ultra-short chain PFAS and PFAS precursors. The strong thermal and chemical stability of PFAS and the complex nature of PFAS mixtures makes the remediation of PFAS in wastewater challenging. However, the review examines and compares current technologies which can treat and remove PFAS from wastewaters. In this review, the distribution, transformation, and remediation of PFAS and their substitutes in wastewater sources are covered.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of chemicals used in various commercial industries to include food packaging, non-stick repellent, and waterproof products. International environmental protection agencies are currently looking for ways to detect and safely remediate both solid and aqueous PFAS waste due to their harmful effects. Incineration is a technique that disposes of chemicals by breaking down the chemicals at high temperatures, upwards of 1400 °C. Incineration has been used on other related compounds, but PFAS presents a challenge during thermal degradation due to the molecular stability and reactivity of fluorine. Research on the efficacy of this method is currently limited, as the degradation byproducts of PFAS are not fully characterized. Current research is mostly focused on the development of benchtop methods for the safe remediation of solid PFAS waste. Aqueous fire fighting foams (AFFFs) have garnered significant attention due to extensive use since development in the 1960s. Numerous communities that are closely located near airports have been shown to have higher than average PFAS contamination from the repeated use. Detection and remediation of surface, subsurface, and wastewater have become a primary concern for environmental agencies. Use of electrochemical techniques to remove the PFAS contaminants has shown recent promise to help address this issue. Critical to the remediation efforts is development of standardized detection techniques and the implementation of local and international regulations to control the production and use of fluorinated products. No single solution has yet been developed, but much progress has been made in recent years in governmental regulation, detection, and remediation techniques.

Abstract:Per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are often considered the quintessential example of industrial chemical pollution – they are toxic and ubiquitous environmental contaminants that are extremely difficult to degrade. There has been a large research focus on the development of effective and renewable degradation technologies. In comparison to traditional pollutant degradation techniques, such as advanced oxidation processes and electrochemistry, degradation of PFAS using extracellular enzymes offers an eco‐friendly solution as enzymes are biodegradable, recyclable and have low energy and chemical requirements. This review outlines the current understanding of extracellular enzymatic degradation of PFAS with a focus on reported results and proposed degradation mechanisms. More importantly, this review highlights limitations that hinder the application of enzymes for PFAS degradation and proposes critical future research that is needed to improve the applicability of this promising remediation strategy.

Abstract:The recalcitrant behavior of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to most traditional water treatment processes is driving the development of new or modified treatment approaches for PFAS destruction. This paper evaluates and compares the strengths and limitations of available physico-chemical treatment techniques. A comparative assessment based on effectiveness (extent of degradation and defluorination) and efficiency (rate, cost, and energy use) revealed that electrochemical oxidation, advanced reduction processes (ARPs) and plasma-based technology exhibited the best potential towards overall process efficiency. Sonolysis and heat-activated persulfate had the highest energy demand while photochemical oxidation was the most ineffective method.

Abstract:Perfluorinated compounds such as perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) have recently drawn great attention due to their wide distribution in aquatic environments. The understanding of the physicochemical properties and fate and transport of PFAs in groundwater is still limited. Preliminary studies indicate that these compounds can readily bioaccumulate and pose human and animal health concerns. Due to their physicochemical properties, PFOS and PFOA are water soluble, nonvolatile and persistent in the environment, which is a cause of concern related to their treatment with conventional remediation technologies. Extraction with inefficient carbon adsorption is one of the most common treatment technologies for remediation of PFOS- or PFOA-impacted groundwater. Several other innovative and promising technologies, including sonochemistry, bioremediation and photolysis, have been tested for their effectiveness in removal of perfluorinated compounds. This paper provides a baseline for understanding research needs to better develop treatment technologies for PFOA and PFOS in groundwater. Frontiers for improving the state of practice for PFOA and PFOS treatment include the development of more cost-effective ex situ treatment methods and the development and demonstration of promising in situ treatment technologies at the pilot and full scale.
