Abstract:Objectives: Nursing home (NH) residents suffer from sleep disturbances which are associated with a low quality of life (QoL). The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of comparing acupressure on specific acupoints with acupressure on non-specific acupoints in older NH residents with sleep disturbances. Design: A randomized control trial with a pre- and post-test design. Setting: One NH in Taiwan. Participants: Sixty-two older NH residents were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 31) and a sham-controlled group (n = 31). Intervention: The experimental group received acupressure on the Tian-Zhu, Ju-Que, Yong-Quan, Bai-Hui, and Nei-Guan acupoints three times a week for 8 weeks, for 24 minutes each time, while the control group received a massage at locations with no acupoints, which were 10 mm from the true points, at the same frequency as the experimental group. Measurements: The primary outcome was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the secondary outcome was measured using the Short-form 36 (SF-36). Data were collected at baseline, the end of treatment, and 4 weeks after completion of treatment. Results: Compared to the control group, the experimental group had significantly better scores on the PSQI (t = -7.72, P < 0.001) and SF-36 (t = 1.34, P < 0.001) during the intervention period. The improvements in the PSQI and SF-36 scores were still significant (P < 0.001) after adjusting for confounding variables by generalized estimating equations. Conclusions: Results suggest that acupressure on the Tian-Zhu, Ju-Que, Yong-Quan, Bai-Hui, and Nei-Guan acupoints can improve the quality of sleep and life among NH residents. Acupressure is a promising intervention that may improve well-being for NH residents with sleep disturbances.
The Effects of Acupressure Training on Sleep Quality and Cognitive Function of Older Adults: A 1-Year Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:We explored the effects of acupressure training on older adults' sleep quality and cognitive function. Ninety older adults with impaired sleep quality were selected from screened volunteers and randomly divided into equal control and experimental groups; 82 completed the 1-year follow-up. Participants in the control group were given instructions on sleep health, while those in the experimental group received sleep health instructions plus individual and small group acupressure training sessions and support to practice the intervention on their own each day. All participants were assessed by trained assistants blind to study group allocation using Chinese versions of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the Mini-Mental State Examination, and four subscales from the revised Chinese version of the Wechsler Memory Scale, at baseline and at 3, 6, and 12 months. Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that acupressure training improved older adults' sleep quality and cognitive function, but the mediating effect of sleep on the relationship between acupressure training and cognitive function was not supported. Given the ease, simplicity, and safety of acupressure training observed with community-dwelling older adults in China, attempts should be made to replicate these preliminary positive findings with larger samples. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Factors contributing to cognitive improvement effects of acupuncture in patients with mild cognitive impairment: a pilot randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Abstract Background Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is generally regarded as the borderline between cognitive changes of aging and very early Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It is important to develop easily available interventions to delay the progression of MCI to AD. We investigated factors contributing to the cognitive improvement effects of acupuncture to obtain data for developing optimized acupuncture treatments for MCI. Methods This outcome assessor-blinded, randomized controlled trial included a full analysis for comparing the efficacy of different acupuncture methods. Thirty-two participants with MCI (i.e., fulfilling the Peterson diagnostic criteria for MCI, K-MMSE scores of 20–23, and MoCA-K scale scores of 0–22) were randomly assigned to basic acupuncture (BA; GV20, EX-HN1, GB20, and GV24 for 30 min), acupoint specificity (AS; adding KI3 to BA), needle duration (ND; BA for 20 min), or electroacupuncture (EA; electrical stimulation to BA) groups ( n =8/group) via 1:1:1:1 allocation and administered acupuncture once daily, three times a week for 8 weeks. The measured outcomes included scores on the Korean version of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-K-cog), Korean version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment scale (MoCA-K), Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, Korean Activities of Daily Living scale, Korean Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale, and European Quality of Life Five Dimension Five Level Scale. Outcome measurements were recorded at baseline (week 0), intervention endpoint (week 8), and 12 weeks after intervention completion (week 20). Results Twenty-five patients with MCI completed the trial (BA group, 8; AS group, 6; ND group, 5; EA group, 6). MoCA-K scores were significantly increased in the BA group compared with the ND ( p =0.008, week 8–week 0) and EA groups ( p =0.003, week 8–week 0; p =0.043, week 20–week 0). ADAS-K-cog scores were significantly decreased in the BA group compared with the ND group ( p =0.019, week 20–week 0). Conclusions The BA group showed significant improvement in cognitive function compared to the ND and EA groups. Electrical stimulation and needle duration may contribute to the cognitive improvement effects of acupuncture in patients with MCI. Abstract:The current study explored participants' experiences and perceptions of receiving acupressure within an Australian aged care context. Participants were older adults living in three residential aged care facilities who had received an acupressure intervention. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using a thematic approach. Twelve participants (10 females and two males) were interviewed. Four major themes emerged: Having Better Sleep , Feeling Calm and Relaxed , Promoting Well-Being and Functional Status , and Acceptability of Acupressure . Participants' perception of the acupressure was positive, as participants found acupressure to be beneficial for the improvement of sleep, mood, and general well-being. Participants' overall perception supports the acceptability of acupressure and suggests acupressure may be beneficial for improving sleep, relaxation, and well-being in older adults. Abstract:BACKGROUND Until May 2000, bivalent A/C meningococcal vaccine was the only available vaccine in Singapore for hajj travelers to Saudi Arabia. Recent worldwide reports of serogroup W-135 meningococcal meningitis associated with hajj returnees necessitated switching to quadrivalent A/C/Y/W-135 vaccine and crossover vaccination of travelers to Saudi Arabia. No safety data are available for quadrivalent vaccine following recent vaccination with bivalent vaccine. We assessed the safety and side effect profile of bivalent, quadrivalent, and quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine after recent vaccination with bivalent vaccine. METHODS A postvaccination telephone questionnaire survey was performed for all travelers who received either bivalent (B), quadrivalent (Q), or quadrivalent with recent (as defined by less than 6 months before) bivalent meningococcal vaccine (BQ) between 22 May and 8 June 2000 in preparation for the umrah (minor pilgrimage). Patients were asked about local reactions (pain, erythema, swelling at injection site graded in mild, moderate, and severe) and systemic reactions (fever, headache, graded in mild and severe). RESULTS Of 546 persons vaccinated, 323 were interviewed. Median time interval between interview and vaccination was 10 days. Of those interviewed, 64 patients received bivalent (B), 213 quadrivalent (Q), and 46 quadrivalent after recent bivalent vaccine (BQ). The median interval time between previous bivalent and quadrivalent vaccine was 5 weeks. There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of side effects between the three groups. Mild pain at injection site was recorded in B as 21.8%, Q as 23%, BQ as 21.7%; low grade fever in B as 7.8%, Q as 9.8%, and BQ as 15.2%. CONCLUSIONS Bivalent and quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine are well tolerated. Crossover vaccination of quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine after recent vaccination with bivalent vaccine does not increase the prevalence of adverse reactions and is therefore safe.
The influence of occlusal surface material on peak masticatory forces using osseointegrated implant-supported prostheses.

Abstract:Masticatory forces associated with porcelain and acrylic resin occlusal surfaces on osseointegrated implant-supported prostheses opposing natural teeth were studied in five healthy subjects. A three-channel electronic force transducer carrying a fixed prosthesis with either acrylic resin or porcelain occlusal surfaces and balanced articulation was used to record masticatory forces while the subjects chewed various foods. It was found that mean peak masticatory forces varied considerably from subject to subject but were consistent within each subject. No differences related to tooth material could be detected in the load rates. Forces directed away from the implants were noted in all subjects.

Abstract:Background: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is an important window of opportunity for early intervention and rehabilitation in dementia. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and effect of delivering transcutaneous electrical acupuncture stimulation (TEAS) intervention to elders with aMCI. Methods: A total of 61 aMCI patients were randomly allocated into the intervention group (receiving a 12-week TEAS) and control group (receiving health education). The feasibility outcomes included recruitment rate, retention rate, adherence rate, and an exploration of patients' views and suggestions on the research. The effective outcomes included cognitive function, sleep quality, and life quality, which were measured by the Montreal cognitive assessment scale (MoCA), auditory verbal learning test—Huashan version (AVLT-H), Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and quality of life short-term-12 (QoL SF-12). Results: The recruitment rate, retention rate, and adherence rate were 67.35%, 92.42%, and 85.29%, respectively. Most aspects of the research design and administration of the TEAS intervention were acceptable. The quantitative analysis suggests that compared with the control group, the scores of MoCA, AVLT-H, and SF-12 (mental component summary) were significantly better (p 0.05). Conclusions: The findings demonstrated that the study was feasible. TEAS awas possible for enhancing cognitive function and mental health in people with aMCI.

A Systematic Review and Evaluation of Non-Pharmacological Interventions for Elderly Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to comprehensively summarize and evaluate the impact of non-pharmacological interventions on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in elderly individuals through a systematic review of pertinent literature. The interventions include acupuncture, massage, ear point pressing, acupoint moxibustion, dietary modifications, and exercise interventions. Methods: A thorough literature search spanned 2017 to 2023 across databases like Zhichou, Wanfang, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. It covered pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, emphasising MCI in elderly patients. Independent screening, evaluation, and data extraction were conducted and assessed via the AMSTAR 2 scale and GRADE approach. Outcome measures (e.g., MMSE, MoCA, ADL, CDT, overall efficacy) were analyzed. Results: Three systematic evaluations were assessed using AMSTAR 2. Two were low quality, one moderate. Limited rigor in two studies led to considering only medium-quality papers for evidence grading. Key indicators in RCTs included MMSE (eight studies), MoCA (seven studies), ADL (two studies), CDT (two studies), and overall efficacy (12 studies). GRADE evaluation revealed moderate, high, and high evidence quality for intervention efficacy at one, two, and three months respectively. MMSE evidence was low, MoCA high, ADL very low, and CDT moderate. Adverse events were reported in one publication, suggesting acupuncture's potential pain and resistance. Conclusions: Non-pharmacological interventions, like acupuncture, cognitive exercises, and exercise, show promise in mild cognitive impairment among the elderly. They enhance cognitive function and daily living while maintaining safety. Acupuncture notably improves MoCA scores, supported by robust evidence.

Abstract:Aims: We conducted a multi-sectoral comprehensive intervention for elderly Alzheimer Disease patients and their caregivers to improve their quality of life. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: From June to June in 2019, 150 Alzheimer Disease patients were randomly selected from a nursing home in Zhejiang province of China, they were randomly divided into the intervention group and the control group. And they were given comprehensive and routine interventions respectively for six months. We used mixed models in our analyses to see how outcomes changed over time and how they were affected by the intervention, which could also solve the problems of missing values and data correlation. Results: After six months, compared with the control group, the communication ability, housework handling ability, self-care ability and life quality of the patients in the intervention group were improved, and the quality of life and caring ability of their caregivers were also significantly improved. Conclusion: The multi-sectoral collaborative care model proposed in this study integrated resources from several departments, effectively improved the quality of life of patients and their caregivers, and provided a way of care services for patients with Alzheimer Disease. Impact: Multi-sectoral comprehensive intervention would improve the life quality of elderly patients with Alzheimer Disease and their caregivers.
Effects of Tactile Massage in Improving Older Residents' Psychological Health in Long-Term Care Facilities: A Randomised Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: Loneliness, anxiety and depressive symptoms are common among older residents in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), which can negatively impact their quality of life and increase mortality rates. Addressing these psychological health issues is an important task for nursing staff. There is a need for easy and accessible interventions to improve older residents' negative emotions. Tactile massage (TM) is a form of touch therapy that induces oxytocin, which can help individuals feel relaxed, experience pleasure and reduce anxiety. TM can also provide a sense of security and care for individuals. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of TM in improving older residents' psychological health in LTCFs. Design: In this study, we applied a two-arm randomised controlled trial research design. Methods: We used convenience sampling to enrol 55 older residents in three long-term care facilities who were randomly assigned to an intervention group and a comparison group. The intervention group received TM by research assistants on both hands for 15 min per time, twice a week for 4 weeks and the comparison group received regular care. Data were collected before and after the intervention. Generalised estimating equations (GEEs) were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Results: There were no significant differences in loneliness, anxiety, depressive symptoms, happiness, ear temperature, heart rate or diastolic blood pressure between the two groups after the intervention. However, the intervention group had significant improvements in comfort (B = 0.86, p < 0.001), relaxation (B = 1.00, p < 0.001), respiratory rate (B = -0.16, p = 0.021) and systolic blood pressure (B = - 4.17, p = 0.002) compared to the control group. Conclusions: TM can help older residents who live in LTCFs feel relaxed and comfortable. Implications for practice: TM can be easily implemented as it requires no tools. We recommend that nursing staff and healthcare professionals incorporate TM as part of their care routines. They also can encourage family members to perform TM on residents during their visits to enhance residents' comfort and relaxation. Acupuncture-related treatments improve cognitive and physical functions in Alzheimer's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract:Objective To determine acupuncture-related treatments’ effects and duration on improving cognitive function, physical function, and quality of life in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Data sources Eight electronic databases were searched for eligible randomized controlled trials from database inception to January 2021, including Medline, PubMed, EBSCO, Embase, Cochrane, Airiti Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and China Journal Full-text Database. Review methods A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted on acupuncture types, cognitive function, activity of daily life, muscle strength and quality of life. Results Sixty-six studies in total with 4191 participants, the overall risk of bias was classified 60% as low and 24% as high. Acupuncture-related treatments for cognitive function and self-care ability revealed a moderate effect size, with a significant difference in noninvasive and invasive remedies ( p < 0.001). Cognitive function showed significant differences in 6, 8, 12, and 24 weeks while self-care ability in the latter two weeks ( p < 0.001). Meta-regression analysis showed cognitive function increased by 0.05 points ( p = 0.002) and self-care ability decreased by 0.02 points ( p = 0.04) after weekly treatment. There was a significant difference in muscle strength ( p = 0.0003). Conclusion Acupuncture-related treatments effectively improved cognitive function with the treatment lasted 6 weeks at least, but self-care ability started showing effects after 12 weeks of treatment. The improvement of muscle strength was also confirmed. Acupuncture-related treatments, particularly noninvasive ones, have few complications and high safety, perhaps providing patients and caregivers diversified choices and clinical care guidelines for reference.

Effects of Acupuncture on Vascular Cognitive Impairment with No Dementia: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: Acupuncture has been used for treating vascular cognitive impairment, but evidence for its effectiveness remains limited. Objective: This single-center, patient-accessor blinded, randomized controlled trial was designed to assess whether acupuncture could improve the cognitive function of patients with vascular cognitive impairment with no dementia (VCIND). Methods: 120 VCIND patients were randomly assigned to the electro-acupuncture (EA) or sham acupuncture (SA) group at a 1 : 1 ratio, with treatment conducted thrice weekly for 8 weeks. The primary outcome was the changes of cognitive function measured by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) from baseline to week 8. The secondary outcomes included the scores of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Modified Barthel Index (MBI) and the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS). Follow-up assessments were performed with MoCA and MMSE at week 16 and 32. Linear mixed-effects models were used for analysis and all statistical tests were two-sided. Results: The results showed that patients in the EA group had a significantly greater improvement in MoCA score (23.85 +/- 4.18) than those in the SA group (21.48 +/- 4.44) at week 8 (95% CI = 0.80, 3.92, p = 0.04), as well as higher MoCA scores over time (p < 0.001 for interaction). Patients who received EA showed a greater increase in MMSE scores (26.41 +/- 3.47) than those who received SA (24.40 +/- 3.85) along 8 weeks (95% CI = 0.69, 3.34, p = 0.004). However, results diminished over time. No serious adverse events occurred during the trial. Conclusion: EA is a safe and effective technique to improve cognition over the short term of 8 weeks in VCIND patients.
The effect of acupressure on constipation symptoms and quality of life among older people: a mixed-methods study

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the effect of acupressure on constipation symptoms and quality of life in older people. The study was a double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled, qualitative and quantitative mixed-method study. Individuals in the acupressure group received acupressure for 21 min per day for a total of 12 sessions. The other group received sham acupressure for the same duration. Constipation Assessment Scale (CAS), Constipation Quality of Life Scale (PAC-QOL), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and individual follow-up form were used to evaluate quantitative data, and semi-structured interview form was used to evaluate qualitative data. A total of 81 participants were randomized to acupressure (n = 41, mean age: 70.56 ± 4.76, 70.7% female) or sham acupressure (n = 40, mean age: 71.17 ± 5.19, 67.5% female). Repeated measurements of the participants showed that CAS scores differed significantly between acupressure applications (p < 0.001). There were also statistically significant differences between the two groups in PAC-QOL and VAS after the application, number of defecations and laxative use (p < 0.001). Compared to the placebo group, the acupressure group had significantly lower mean post-test scores in all constipation rating scales. Qualitative findings from the study also support the quantitative findings. For older people seeking evidence-based alternative therapy, acupressure may be a solution to reduce the constipation symptoms. Future studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm our study findings. ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05506397, 17 August 2022, retrospectively registered. This study aims to evaluate the effect of acupressure on constipation symptoms and quality of life in older people. It was observed that the constipation score of the acupressure group were significantly decreased and the difference between the two groups was significant. Acupressure is an effective non-pharmacological approach for the treatment of constipation.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: This integrative review aimed to synthesize studies that investigated the effects of acupressure on sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and agitation in older people, and to describe the acupressure procedures and techniques applied in the included studies.METHODS: A literature search was conducted using electronic databases including CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and MEDLINE. The inclusion criteria for the review were studies examining the effect of acupressure in older people aged 60 years and above, measured the outcomes for sleep quality, depression, anxiety or agitation, applied body acupressure, and published in English language. The exclusion criteria were studies using auricular acupoints only, and articles published in any language other than English. Methodological quality of studies was assessed using the critical appraised tools developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. The information about study design, findings, and description of acupressure intervention were extracted, summarized, and synthesized.RESULTS: A total of 255 articles were identified from the search and as well one article from cross-references. From there, a total of 19 studies were included in this review. Nine studies consistently showed positive effects of acupressure on sleep quality, and four studies consistently showed that acupressure reduced depression. The outcomes of acupressure on anxiety and agitation showed inconsistent findings, in which three studies measured anxiety and five studies measured agitation. There was also variation of acupressure techniques applied in the reviewed studies.CONCLUSION: This review found some emerging evidences that acupressure can be beneficial for older people who suffer from sleep problems and depression. Use of specific acupressure points, with standardized acupressure treatment protocols, may improve sleep quality and possibly psychological wellbeing of older people. Future research with well-designed mixed method studies are required to produce stronger evidence, as well as in-depth understanding of acupressure intervention in aged care context.

Abstract:The electric discharge of Torpedo M. can be considered as an index of the metabolic activity of the electric lobe of C.N.S. In groups of 10 Torpedoes the electric charge was measured: the mechanical stimulus was obtained by the falling of different weights from a determinate height. The experiment was then repeated in conditions of hypoxia: a fall of the electric discharge values was observed. The experiment was also carried out considering the time: after 14 hours the condition of anoxia occurred.
Effectiveness of acupoint pressure on older people with constipation in nursing homes: a double-blind quasi-experimental study

Abstract:Aims: To compare the differences between acupoint pressure, abdominal massage and laxatives in treatment of constipation for residents in two nursing homes.Background: There is lack of evidence on the utility of complementary therapies in the management of constipation among older adults.Design: Quasi-experimental.Methods: A total of 90 participants from two nursing homes in Taiwan were assigned to three groups: the control group (with laxatives only), group I (with laxatives and abdominal massage) and group II (with laxatives, acupoint pressure therapy [APT] and abdominal massage). The intervention was performed over 10 days. A double-blind technique was applied in both participants and the outcome assessors. Constipation as main outcome was evaluated and recorded for 10 days. Observation of the frequency of defecation and the consistency, particularly firmness of faeces over each 24 h' period was recorded. The Transparent Reporting of Evaluations with Nonrandomized Designs (TREND) checklist was utilised in reporting methods and findings.Results: Three variations were revealed as interface factors and showed significant differences in each group. The results showed a statistically significant decrease in constipation in the experimental groups I and II. The scores of defecation frequency, difficulty degree and time of defecation, stool quality and awareness of defecation were obviously improved after treatment.Conclusions: We concluded APT could be used in conjunction with laxatives and must be considered as a long-term intervention. The combination of APT, abdominal massage and laxatives is superior to both abdominal massage with laxatives and laxatives alone.Relevance to clinical practice: Acupoint pressure as an effective complementary therapy of constipation among older adults living in nursing home provides a non-pharmacological, independent nursing intervention that nurses could use. This is relevant to nursing home settings where nurses make autonomous decision on important clinical assessments and interventions.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Converging evidence indicates that subjective cognitive decline (SCD) could be an early indicator of dementia. The hippocampus is the earliest affected region during the progression of cognitive impairment. However, little is known about whether and how acupuncture change the hippocampal structure and function of SCD individuals.METHODS: Here, we used multi-modal MRI to reveal the mechanism of acupuncture in treating SCD. Seventy-two older participants were randomized into acupuncture or sham acupuncture group and treated for 12 weeks.RESULTS: At the end of the intervention, compared to sham acupuncture, participants with acupuncture treatment showed improvement in composite Z score from multi-domain neuropsychological tests, as well as increased hippocampal volume and functional connectivity. Moreover, the greater white matter integrity of the fornix, which is the major output tract of the hippocampus, was shown in the acupuncture group.CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that acupuncture may improve the cognitive function of SCD individuals, and increase hippocampal volume on the regional level and enhance the structural and functional connectivity of hippocampus on the connective level.

Abstract:Introduction: Psychological distress is prevalent among the primary family caregivers of patients with stroke. Objective: This study evaluated the effects of acupressure on anxiety, stress, and depression among the primary family caregivers of Patient With Stroke. Materials and Methods: In this sham-controlled randomized clinical trial, 96 family caregivers of Patient with Stroke were selected and allocated to the acupressure (n=40) and sham (n=42) groups. The study data were collected using demographic questionnaires for the patients and caregivers, the Barthel index (for assessing independence in daily living activities,) and the Persian version of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS). Participants in the acupressure group received training about acupressure on the Yin Tang and HT7 points, while participants in the sham group received training about acupressure on the CV24 and TB5 sham points. The acupressure intervention lasted for 30 consecutive days. Statistical tests, including the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the independent t test, the Chi-square test, the Fisher exact test, the Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney U test, and the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were applied to analyze the data. Results: The mean ages of the participants were 46.1±12.1 years in the acupressure group and 42.7±11.8 years in the sham group. The mean ages of the patients in these groups were 75.1±8.1 and 76.8±9.7 years; respectively. Regarding the demographic characteristics, no significant differences were observed between the acupressure and the sham groups. Regarding the pre-test mean scores of anxieties, stress, and depression, there were no significant differences between the acupressure and the sham groups. Anxiety and stress significantly reduced after the intervention only in the acupressure group (P<0.05). However, depression did not change substantially during the study.The ANCOVA indicated significant differences between the two groups after the intervention regarding anxiety and stress. In other words, in the acupressure group, anxiety and stress significantly improved compared to the sham group (P<0.05). Conclusion: It seems that the acupressure on the Yin Tang and HT7 points can help manage anxiety and stress among the primary family caregivers of Patient With Stroke.
The Long-Term Effects of Acupuncture on Hippocampal Functional Connectivity in aMCI with Hippocampal Atrophy: A Randomized Longitudinal fMRI Study

Abstract:Background . Acupuncture has been used to treat amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) for many years in China. However, the long-term effects of continuous acupuncture treatment remained unclear. Objective . We aimed to explore the long-term effects of continuous acupuncture treatment on hippocampal functional connectivity (FC) in aMCI. Methods . Fifty healthy control (HC) participants and 28 aMCI patients were recruited for resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at baseline. The 28 aMCI patients were then divided into the aMCI acupuncture group, which received acupuncture treatment for 6 months, and the aMCI control group, which received no intervention. All aMCI patients completed the second resting-state fMRI scanning after 6 months of acupuncture treatment. Analysis based on the region of interest and two-way analysis of covariance were both used to explore the long-term effects of acupuncture on cognition change and hippocampal FC in aMCI. Results . Compared to HC, aMCI showed decreased right hippocampal FC with the right inferior/middle temporal gyrus (ITG/MTG), left amygdala, and the right fusiform and increased FC with bilateral caudates at baseline. After acupuncture treatment, the right hippocampal FC with right ITG/MTG enhanced significantly in the aMCI acupuncture group, but continued to decrease in the aMCI control group. Whole brain FC analysis showed enhanced right hippocampal FC with the right ITG and the left MTG in the aMCI acupuncture group relative to the aMCI control group. Furthermore, FC strength of the right hippocampus with right ITG at baseline was negatively correlated with the changes in memory scores of aMCI acupuncture patients. Conclusion . Acupuncture treatment could alleviate the progression of cognitive decline and could enhance hippocampal FC with ITG and MTG in aMCI that may be associated with resilience to resistant against neurodegeneration. The findings provided a better understanding of the long-term effects of acupuncture treatment and confirmed the therapeutic role of acupuncture in aMCI.
